Community steps up following food bank robberies Response to news of multiple thefts was ‘overwhelming,’ food bank director says DA N F E R G US ON Time s Re po rte r

IN THE MARKET: Beth Brew (foreground) tries on some knitted headwear from Custom Caps and More of Langley earlier this month at a busy Murrayville Holiday Market in the Murrayville Hall.
On Wednesday morning, Sources Langley Food Bank manager Bruce Strom was preparing a group of volunteers for the weekly distribution of food and other supplies to people in need at their 200 Street location. “We have a full selection of diapers today,” Strom said, surveying the well-packed shelves. “But we’re short on potatoes.” It was the first distribution by Sources since the cube van the food bank uses to pick up donations and purchases was stolen. That happened shortly after gift cards valued at $1,000 were stolen during a break-in — cards that are used instead of cash to purchase perishable B R UCE food. STR OM The van was recovered, but it suffered mechanical damage that left it un-drivable. Whoever stole it used the food bank gas card to buy $1,300 worth of diesel gas at a Clearbrook Petro-Canada. About the same time, the food bank’s other, smaller van broke down and was declared too old to fix. It was looking like a bleak Christmas until word of the thefts got out. The response from the community was immediate and overwhelming, said Sources community services director Denise Darrell. “People walked in with $20 bills,” Darrell said. Continued Page 3

Foundations for outdoor pool roof approved Council decision comes after some residents complained about outdoor facility planned for Aldergrove recreation complex D AN F ERGUSO N Ti me s Re po r t e r
Township council has approved changes to the new Aldergrove pool that will allow construction of a canopy cover in the future. The Monday vote approved spending an extra $280,000 to install “footings and structural enhancements” that would serve as the foundation for a canopy roof over the pool. Council postponed a decision on actually building the canopy, which would cost another $1.6 million. Coun. Bob Long proposed proceeding with the preliminary foundation work immediately, calling it a “prudent” move that
makes it easier to add a roof in the future. Coun. Charlie Fox was the only member present who voted against the proposal, saying it was because he would have preferred to see the canopy approved “right now.” To completely enclose the pool would add more than $7 million to the $26 million estimated cost of construction, a staff report to council estimates. The decision comes after Joanne Nicolato of the Aldergrove Recreation and Pool Society told a November council meeting that supporters of an indoor pool are so disappointed with the decision to build an outdoor pool that they were unwilling to fundraise to support the project.
“If it’s not going to be indoors, people are not going to help at all,” Nicolato said. There was concern the Township could just put a roof over the pool and leave it open to the elements, Nicolato said. “Covered is not indoor.” Nicolato called on council to make the final building and pool design public, “so the public can see exactly what facilities, or lack of, is being provided to the community.” The Township trimmed the estimated cost of the new recreation centre from $55 million to $26 million by opting for an outdoor pool and demolishing the Aldergrove Elementary School. The new Township facility will feature a
550-seat hockey arena and events space, fitness centre, walking surface, multi-purpose rooms, and an outdoor aquatic facility with a six-lane, 25-metre pool, waterslides, tidal pool, current channel, children’s aqua structure, picnic areas and playground. The reduced cost means the Township will not have to hike taxes or seek approval for any more potentially-controversial sales of surplus land to raise the necessary money. The pool and water park are scheduled to open in May, 2018, followed a few months later by the arena. — with files from Black Press
Stolen van replaced, more than $15,000 donated From Page 1

The gift was welcome news for (from left) Sources community services director Denise Darrell, volunteer driver Matt Offer and Sources CEO David Young.
Two professional development days added to current school year
M ONIQUE TAMMINGA Times Reporter
Two more professional development days are being added to this school year, much to the dismay of some parents and students. Langley school trustees shared parents’ concerns at the most recent board of education meeting Dec. 8. The two dates, Jan. 15 and April 18, 2016 were passed by the board of education, with trustee Shelly Coburn opposed. The two extra days are for teachers to
Three credit unions — Aldergrove, Envision and Westminster Savings — each donated $5,000. Nufloors Langley has also pledged a $1,000 donation, which they planned to deliver Thursday. The Purolator Courier company loaned Sources a delivery van, with a driver. The Vancouver Mercedes dealership loaned the food bank a panel van as well, going so far as to apply food bank decals to the sides. And four companies got together to replace the stolen cube van. Led by Langley real estate developer Newmark Group, along with Canadian Truck and Car Rental in Langley, Mr. Lube in Langley and Dawn Construction in Surrey, the firms purchased a one-tonne cube van, which arrived at Sources on Tuesday afternoon. “I was close to tears,” Darrell said of the gift. Newmark Group President Mark Chandler said the companies were “grateful” to be of assistance. “I know that I speak for everyone at the companies that contributed when I say that it is an honour to be able to help Sources Langley Food Bank in this small way,” Chandler said. Sources CEO David Young said the response was “incredible.” “The donation of a new truck is what we wished for, and the community came together and helped make our wish come true,” Young said.
learn the new B.C. curriculum, now being rolled out. “I’ve received some calls from parents of Grade 12 students concerned that another two days is too much loss at such an important time,” said trustee Meghan Dykeman. Trustees Coburn and Alison McVeigh also received calls of concern. For some parents the problem is the timing of the April day, which falls right around exam time for Grade 10s. A B.C.-wide Pro D day is set for Feb.
19, during which teachers are to learn how to incorporate Aboriginal history into the curriculum. For this school year, there are five district-wide Pro D days. Assistant superintendent Gordon Stewart said they weighed what days would be best and came up with the January and April dates. “No one is happy about losing two days of instruction, but this is province-wide,” said Stewart, in response to Coburn’s suggestion that the time should be made up somewhere.

City wants feds to pick up larger share of tab for future mega-projects MIRAN D A G AT H E R C O L E Ti m e s Re po r t e r
The City of Langley is asking the federal government to provide more funding for national infrastructure projects that benefit more than just Langley residents. Currently, the Build Canada grant program shares the cost of projects equally between the province, the municipality and the federal government at one third each. But for projects of national significance, such as the Roberts Bank Railway Corridor upgrade, where the increased trade benefits the entire country, council feels the federal government should absorb a minimum of 50 per cent of the cost. With a population of only 26,000 people, they fear the City cannot afford any more mega-projects. “The funding formula is inequitable, especially in a community like ours,” said Coun. Paul Albrecht during the Dec. 14 council meeting. “We have some significant transportation systems and networks that go through our community. The cost of overpasses or under-
passes or interchanges is substantial for a community of 26,000 people. If we were out in a remote rural area, then we wouldn’t have these same kinds of dynamics playing out. “So I think it is something that is overdue to be reviewed and updated.” For the Roberts Bank corridor project, the City of Langley paid $307 per capita — far more than the other two municipalities involved. The Township of Langley, by comparison, paid $129 per capita and the City of Surrey, $47. The City does not want to end up in the same situation with future proposals, like the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 expansion project, which may include an overpass on 200 Street. “Considering we’re a small community with very limited resources, I think this is very timely,” said Coun. Rudy Storteboom. Council will make this motion to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities at the 2016 annual FCM conference in June.

The downtown Langley core is about to receive a timely addition. A post clock, made in memory of Reginald (Reg) and Kathleen (Kay) Easingwood, will be installed at the corner of 204 Street and Fraser Highway as early as February. Crafted by It’s About Time owner Vahid Yazdanmehr, the $20,000 clock and memorial plaque is being funded by the Rotary Club of Langley, with the City contributing an additional $10,000 for the base and electrical power. Reg, who passed away in 2009, had been a member of Rotary since 1966. He was Mayor of the City of Langley from 1983 to 1988 and was awarded the Freedom of the City in 1995. His wife, Kay, was also a member of Rotary and a longtime volunteer with Meals on Wheels and many other organizations.
Who says
She passed away in 2014. Since her passing, the Rotary Club of Langley has wanted to make a lasting donation to the City in the couple’s honour. “They were both just outstanding members of the community,” said David Truman, treasurer of the Rotary Club of Langley. Post clocks are also a traditional donation that Rotary clubs in many cities have contributed, he said. Just last year, he saw one while travelling in Hamilton, Bermuda. “Many places around the world you’ll see there’s a Rotary clock in the downtown area, often near the city hall, showing Rotary’s ongoing support of the community,” Truman said. The clock designed for Langley is a Main Street style, similar to the one outside It’s About Time on Fraser Highway, Yazdanmehr said. It is made of cast aluminum, stands 12-feet-tall, plays differ-

ent chimes and melodies and has a 24-inch dial and the Rotary symbol on all four faces. It is also maintenance-free, besides needing a good wash every once in a while. The battery inside will last five years, its LED light will last 10 years, and its GPS satellite control will automatically reset the time during daylight savings. Even vandals will have a difficult time stopping the clock, as its powdered coating paint makes for easy removal of graffiti without causing damage. “This is a landmark and it will last for generations,” Yazdanmehr said. “Most of the time people say ‘meet me under the clock,’ this is a phrase that lots of people use. So it’s good to have a landmark like this in every town. It puts us on the map again, and we can promote the clock in the downtown core. “It will be a great addition to the City.”

Langley dad looking for a Christmas Eve miracle Cam Penner is asking people to sign an online petition urging approval of a drug that treats symptoms of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy MO N I Q U E TA M M I N G A Ti m e s Re po r t e r
All Cam Penner wants for Christmas is a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. It would be the best gift imaginable for his 13-year-old son, Doug, so Penner is working tirelessly this holiday season to get people to sign an online petition before Christmas Eve. Dec. 24, of all dates, is when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is expected to decide whether to approve a drug called Drisapersen. It’s the only one out there, Penner says, that dramatically slows the progression of DMD, and it has helped Doug tremendously. Many people in Langley know about Doug through the Ride for Doug fundraiser. For the past eight years, Penner has organized the motorcycle ride through the Fraser Valley, in that time raising $33,000 for research into a cure for DMD. Now, he’s organizing the most important event. “Doug joined the study in the summer of 2011. For the next three years he made weekly trips into Children’s Hospital for drug injections and testing,” said Cam. “It was a painful ordeal – each injection hurt, and the battery of blood draws, MRIs, EKGs, muscle biopsies, and other treatments were exhausting. But there was promise; where decline was expected, we found sta-

13. “Then, the drug changed ownership. During that period, the study was halted, and in the 18 months it took to get re-started, we watched our son decline. We weren’t doing long walks anymore — a couple of blocks was Doug’s limit. He began to need to crawl up the stairs instead of walk. Our hearts broke.”

But just after Doug’s 13th birthday, the study resumed and he quickly regained movement. The family met with other boys who have seen huge gains from the drug. One in 3,500 boys in Canada are born with DMD. This is the first and only treatment for DMD. Currently, most males with DMD live only to around 25. Cam is pleading with people to sign the petition. “Your voice makes a difference,” he said. “I can’t think of a better Christmas gift for Doug, Gavin (the boy in the petition) and all the other DMD boys,” he said. Just as we expected Normally, we don’t like to say “we told you so,” but in this case, we’ll admit it feels good to be right. After being robbed twice within a 72-hour period last week, the operators of Sources Langley Food Bank have far more to smile about today. On Wednesday, we reported that the food bank that operates out of the former United church on 200 Street, was robbed of $1,000 in gift cards, and that the large cube van, on which it depended to pick up donations and groceries, was taken soon after. Then, to add insult to injury, the truck thieves racked up $1,300 in charges on the charity’s gas card. As frustrating as it is to know there are people out there who obviously have no qualms about stealing from an agency that exists for the sole purpose of helping others, we were fairly certain that wouldn’t be the end of the story. Turns out, it was just the beginning. The community — businesses and regular citizens alike — mobilized, and by Wednesday afternoon, the food bank had received more than $15,000 in donations as well as a new cube van. In addition, they were gifted with the use of three more vans and replacement gift cards to help them purchase perishable food items for distribution. None of this excuses the thefts that led to this outpouring of generosity. As moved as we are by the response, we’re hardly surprised, because time and again, Langley has proved itself to be a very generous community. That’s never more true than during the Christmas season. So, even as we reported on the loss, we were confident we’d be following up with a much happier story. If we were surprised by any aspect of this tale, it’s how quickly we get to do just that.

Surrey team joined us with funny stories and revelry. Our quiet time in the hot tub was disturbed by six burley Okanagan curlers entertaining us with witty songs and jokes. We had knocks on our room door after midnight inviting us to parties. The drive home Sunday afternoon was quiet and subdued. I thought I had purchased the perfect gift, but by not asking if there was something going on at the hotel that weekend, I had blown it. Do the research. A couple had become separated in the mall. She phoned him to see where he was. He answered, “Honey you know that jewelry store we were in last year and saw that diamond pendant and earrings that we thought we could maybe afford another year?” “Yes!” she shouted excitedly. “Well,” he replied, “I’m in the pub across from that jewelry store.” I usually try to finish my column with a solution to a problem. On this topic men, you are on your own. Like the North Shore hiker, before you enter the mall plan your day, know where the pitfalls are and be prepared to spend the night. Many reasons for Langley residents to care about Surrey truck park plan Editor: Why should Township residents care if Surrey’s 77-acre truck stop goes ahead? “What truck stop?” You know, the one at 16 Avenue and 194 Street; next to the Little Campbell River and Fish Hatchery. To many residents, it’s “the llama farm,” right on top of the Brookswood aquifer. That aquifer provides drinking water for many residents in Township. And it won’t be just anywhere on the aquifer, but right over a recharge area, so that any spills have a high risk of contaminating both the salmon stream and your drinking water. How likely is it that contaminants will be present? The proposed plan includes truck washing and maintenance facilities, including oil fluid changes. The developers are proposing a strata style of ownership so managing the facility becomes very difficult. Imagine up to 600 owners all denying responsibility for a spill. Surrey Coun. Tom Gill, the councillor pushing for this facility at this location has stated that Surrey will not be responsible for spill cleanup. He says that is the job of the province. We are still waiting to hear what the province has to say about that. If Surrey goes ahead with this truck facility in that location the pressure on the Township to accept transforming 16 Avenue into a four-lane highway, carrying more than its share of truck traffic, including over-height trucks and trucks transporting dangerous goods, becomes very hard to resist.
Syria’s Assad a tyrant and a despot Editor: Bob Fearn writes (The Times, Nov. 11) that Syrian president Bashar al Assad killed thousands of his own people, but must have had a good reason to do so. Thousands of his citizens are refugees and are streaming out of Syria into the world. The rebels trying to oust Assad are Syrians. Just who are the Syrian citizens that are left? He is a tyrant and a despot who wants to remain in power at any cost, his citizens be damned. CHERRYL KATNICH, MAPLE RIDGE

Heavy traffic along 16 Avenue through Langley. If a proposed parking area for large trucks in Surrey is permitted to go ahead, it will affect this community by adding to large vehicles the already busy road and pose a threat to Langley’s groundwater, says writer. If you think that having 16 Avenue as a four-lane highway is going to make your commute faster and easier, think again. It will mean more and bigger trucks, at an increased maximum speed limit of 70 or 80 km/h. This is just the beginning of the story as to why Township residents should care if Surrey’s truck stop goes ahead. Check out the following websites for

Editor: Given the frequency of accidents along 16 Avenue, the Township’s planning for the future of 16 Avenue, and the city of Surrey’s move to rezone 77 acres of farmland for truck parking, maintenance and washing, next door to Langley, I think the accident reported in the Peace Arch News on Oct. 29 (Two dump trucks and minivan collide) is relevant to the people of Langley. Thanks to Langley Memorial emergency room staff Editor: I want to express my gratitude to the Emergency Room staff at Langley Memorial Hospital. On Oct. 29, I suffered a heart attack. Arriving at the Emergency Room I dropped into a chair and things began. Within minutes the blood pressure cuff was attached and my pulse rate being taken. Before I knew it I was on a bed surrounded by people.
Their calmness and professionalism reduced my fear; a difficult yet vital piece of the event. It was determined that I would be transported to the Royal Columbian Hospital. The paramedics and accompanying Langley emergency staff kept things on an even keel for me as we made our way to New Westminster. Once again the professionalism of the people in the ambulance kept panic at bay. Arriving at RCH, I was whisked
into the Cardiac Care Centre, a stent was placed in my heart and from that moment my recovery was set to begin. I could not believe how quickly and smoothly the team of cardiac doctors and nurses went about their work. I was returned to Langley Memorial and taken to the Critical Care Unit. Once again I was cared for with professionalism and competence. My questions and concerns were
handled with a care level which belied the myriad of tasks the staff were undertaking. At no time did I feel they didn’t have time for my questions, some of which, I am sure, had more basis in nervousness than medical concerns. I am at home now, armed with resource literature, family and neighbours to aid my recovery. I have found that there are numerous programs for people to structure their recovery from heart
problems. I keep thinking that as we move through our daily lives others are experiencing the same life-saving procedures as me; something we need to treasure. My great thanks to these professionals who have ensured that I am here to recover and look forward with joy to a very special Christmas with treasured family and friends. PAT MACDONALD, LANGLEY

At its peak, the street cars and interurban trains of the British Columbia Electric Railway (BCER) connected most of the Lower Mainland through five lines that provided passenger service all the way from Vancouver to Chilliwack. One of the lines ran through Langley. The system needed electricity — a lot of it — and some was provided by a substation near the tracks at 6835 256 St. The BCER Langley Substation was built in 1910 to supply 600 volts of direct current to the interurban trains traveling between New Westminster and Chilliwack. The four-storey Classical Revival building was designed by architect Henry B. Watson. “It is a unique and imposing structure and many questions have been posed by curious citizens, railway enthusiasts, and tourists who have come across it,” said Township of Langley Heritage Planner Elaine Horricks. In 1987, it was purchased by Bryant Ross and two other artists for studio space. Many well-known artists, including painters Norval Morrisseau, Issac Bignel, and Gerry Meeches, and Northwest Coast carvers Gene Brabant and the Hunt Family have worked there. It is now a gallery, which features contemporary Native wood carvings, paintings, and prints from the Pacific Northwest Coast. The new owners have also spent a lot of time explaining the substation’s history to hundreds of curious visitors. Now, there’s a sign to answer some of those questions. The new Langley substation signage was unveiled by members of Township of Langley Council, the Heritage Advisory Committee, and Ross on Nov. 24. It was developed by the Township of Langley, Ross, and

that remain. The other, the Sumas substation in Abbotsford, has been converted into a private residence. The interurban system closed down in 1958 after nearly 60 years, largely because of the growing popularity of transit buses. Less than 30 years later, the first leg of the new SkyTrain system started running along one of the old interurban lines. The new system has yet to reach Langley.
Wishing everyone a safe & happy holiday.

W.C. Blair Recreation Centre Annual Swimming Pool and Facility Maintenance Schedule Each year, aquatic facilities at the W.C. Blair Recreation Centre are temporarily shut down for maintenance. This year, the fitness centre and the entire facility will undergo temporary closures for maintenance as well.
Working together, we can all make a difference to improve safety during winter snowfalls and storms. • Always check weather and travel conditions before heading out on the road; if they are bad, avoid travelling. • Plan your route ahead of time. Avoid any roads that may become dangerous during bad weather. • Reduce your speed to match road conditions. In winter, it’s safer to drive below the posted speed limit. • Keep at least four seconds distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. This allows plenty of room in situations where you need to brake suddenly on a slippery surface. • Watch for black ice. Slow down when approaching shaded areas, bridges and overpasses as these freeze sooner than others in cold weather. For more information on our winter program, visit tol.ca/stormresponse. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter (@LangleyTownship) for regular updates from the Township. And, to learn more about the Snow and Ice program, visit our YouTube channel for video demonstrations. Engineering Division 604.532.7300 opsinfo@tol.ca

Premier Christy Clark talks carbon tax, government ads Premier Christy Clark sat down with Tom Fletcher for a year-end interview at her Victoria office Dec. 9. Here are excerpts. For the full version, see the Opinion tab at langleytimes.com. TF: At the UN climate conference in Paris, did you speak about natural gas as a transition fuel, and did you find support for that idea? PCC: Yes and yes. The new government in Ottawa is a big supporter of our LNG plan, and part of the reason for that is that they also see it as a way forward for Canada to make a huge contribution to fighting global climate change. There are 150 coal plants on the books in China today. The only way that those plants and the ones that come after will be stopped is if they have a transitional fuel to move to. TF: B.C.’s 2020 greenhouse gas target, reduction of emissions by a third, is another target that isn’t going to be met. Why? PCC: When the government brought in the carbon tax, it was based on the assumption that other jurisdictions around us were going to eventually catch up. And none of them have. There comes a point where the carbon tax can only get so high before we start chasing all those jobs out of the province. TF: Your advisory committee says the carbon tax needs to go higher starting in 2018 if it’s going to have an effect. Do you have any other choice? PCC: Let’s figure out what the national goal is going to be, which

TF: On LNG, oil and natural gas prices continue to go down, and supply continues to go up around the world. Did you see any positive signs this year? PCC: What I saw this year was developing countries, especially China, making a firm commitment to reduce their emissions. The only way for them to do that is to move to a greater degree to natural gas, and the bulk of their industry is still located on the east coast of their country, a long way from Russia and close to B.C.

Finding a relief for the discomfort experienced following a meal is common for many people. Taking plant enzymes with meals will ensure food is digested adequately. When the food is sufficiently broken down and the nutrients effectively supplied, the overall function of the digestive system, and more importantly – the digestive experience is improved. I would recommend the DigestMORE ULTRA Enzymes as they are therapeutic-strength plant enzymes and aide in relief of chronic digestive issues.

neuroplasticity (neuro=brain, plasticity=changeability). Autism is a neurological (brain) disorder. Although it is as unique as every person with it, science has identified many areas in the brain that are especially weak in people with autism. Most of these areas can be strengthened with specialized brain training. When the brain is improved, changes are seen in learning, behaviour, attention, receptive and expressive language, social skills, physical sensitivities, and even affection. Some tips on New Year’s financial resolutions: Review 2015’s finances: Did you take on more debt? Overspend or save? Note what worked and what didn’t. Organize spending: Plan incoming & outgoing funds. Tidy up your budget, set clear monetary goals. Boost savings: Pay yourself first by setting up automatic withdrawals into a savings or investment account. Think long-term: Consider kids going to post-secondary, purchasing a home, retirement etc. Consult a professional financial planner if you need help. Reduce debts: Aim to lower your debt in 2016. If the time and income needed to pay back your debt is overwhelming, seek professional debt management assistance. Become debt-free in 2016. sands-trustee.com

Should I list my house before the end of the year or early in the New Year? Housing Inventory is Lower- Currently there is a significant shortage of single family residential homes and a strong demand for town homes and apartments. This is resulting in competitive offers for properties and Seller’s are receiving excellent prices for their properties. Your odds of selling at a great price could actually go UP during this time of year. Longer occupancy’s are common during this time - Some buyers that need to buy now don’t have to occupy the home right away, allowing you a real win-win. They win with lower interest rates now, and you could negotiate your move for later. Only the SERIOUS buyers are out buying now - Fewer may be looking but you are more likely to get a contract from those that do come through! Home May Show Better While Decorated - Your home may look better now than any other time of year! Why not have potential buyers see it at it’s best? Fireplaces, evergreens, scented candles… Decreased Demand - On lenders, appraisers, home inspectors, movers and other vendors during this time can cause your selling processing time to be smoother and easier than during busier times.

How can I reduce my household waste during the holidays? Take reusable cloth bags on shopping trips Thousands of bags end up in our landfills during the holidays. Reduce the number of bags by bringing reusable shopping bags for holiday gift shopping. Use rechargeable batteries. About 40 percent of all battery sales occur during the holiday season. Rechargeable batteries reduce the amount of potentially harmful materials thrown away, and can save money in the long run. Use earth-friendly gift wrapping alternatives, such as • Scarves, handkerchiefs and bandannas • Newspapers (the comic sections works great) • A present in a present. Place gifts inside reusable containers like cookie tins, flower pots, and baskets or wrap gift in cloth napkins or kitchen towels. • Give a “treasure map” to find an unwrapped gift hidden elsewhere in the house • Use re-useable or re-used gift bags • Replace ribbons and bows with natural evergreens, berries, dried flowers. Keep them as decorations or compost them after the gifts are unwrapped. • Wrapping paper made from recycled paper

A very British opening New Jaguar/ Land Rover dealership in Langley City launches with a look back D AN F ERGUSO N Ti me s Re po r t e r
Shortly before the grand opening of the new Jaguar/ Land Rover dealership in Langley City on Saturday afternoon, Daniel Russman, the general manager of the Collection Drive location, was placing a sign next to a classic Jaguar E-type in the front showroom that politely asked people not to touch the decades-old sleek black coupe. The car was not for sale, Russman explained. It was on loan from the president of the Vancouver Jaguar Club, Jim McLagan, who was willing to let the brand-new dealership show off some of the ancestral DNA of the classic British line of sports cars by displaying the E-Type next to the current F-Type coupe, a state-of-the-art evolution of the older vehicle. “It’s stunning,” Russman said of the E-type. “You look at the lines on it, it’s beautiful.” So beautiful that normally sensible people might just forget their manners and make contact with the carefully restored body, hence the sign. On the other side of the 33,271 square foot building, another classic was loitering in the Land Rover showroom. A hulking square-shaped Defender fourwheel-drive, in appropriate khaki colours, was positioned next to the latest generation of the legendary British off-road vehicles, which sported rounder shapes and more modern technology.

A very British “Beefeater” greeted guests at the grand opening of the new OpenRoad Jaguar Land Rover dealership in Langley City on Saturday afternoon. Just to underline the very long and very British history of both the Jaguar and Land Rover, people attending the opening were greeted at the entrance by a man dressed as a “Yeomen Warder of Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London” otherwise known as a Beefeater. The Jaguar/ Land Rover dealership at 5978 Collection Drive, off the Langley Bypass, is part of OpenRoad Auto Group’s luxury auto retail complex, known as “The Collection.” It is the third Jaguar/ Land Rover dealer-
ship in the Lower Mainland, and the first south of the Fraser, senior marketing manager Andrew Ling explained. And unlike the sold-out Richmond and Vancouver outlets, where buyers can face six-month waits, the new Langley facility has vehicles in stock. “We actually have inventory,” Ling said. And if, as seems likely, that situation changes, patient buyers will be treated to a literal unveiling when their new ride finally arrives in the Langley facility’s “delivery
centre,” a dramatically lit room where a silver silk cloth will be whisked off the Jaguar or Land Rover before the new owner gets in and drives away. Out back, the area where vehicles are serviced features state-of-the-art gear like laser-guided wheel alignment devices. The work takes place in a high-ceilinged area with a gleaming white tile floor that gets cleaned by a miniature ride-em scrubbing device that strongly resembles a miniature zamboni.

Sears wraps up their 12 Days of Giving campaign On the 12th day of Christmas, Sears Canada gave back to the community with a holiday day of giving. The Sears Langley location at Willowbrook Shopping Centre held a holiday party on Saturday, which featured festive treats, carolers, free gift wrapping, gingerbread house building and giveaways. This was done at all Sears locations across the country. The celebration was part of Sears Canada’s 12 Days of Giving, which began Dec. 1 and wrapped up on Dec. 12. “Sears Canada has a long history of giving back to the communities in which we live and work,” said Carrie Kirkman, the president and chief merchant for Sears Canada. “It’s such a magical time of year and the holiday spirit of giving is alive and well at Sears. “From our 20,000 associates in stores

Smaller versions of the bears were being sold by Sears to help raise money for the Langley Boys and Girls Club. across the nation to the contributions of our community partners, we are coming together to make everyday a celebration of the true spirit of the holiday season.”
And the staff of the Langley Sears location also made a surprise visit to Langley Memorial Hospital last week (Dec. 8). The employees went over to the hospital
with a Christmas tree and decorations and with the help of some patients, set up the tree. For more, go to www.Sears12DaysofGiving.ca.

Township adds to its fleet Fully electric car will save $10,000 in fuel A lean, mean, greenhouse gas fighting machine has been added to the Township of Langley’s fleet of corporate vehicles. A Nissan Leaf, the Township’s first fully electric car, was purchased in October and is being used by staff to deliver mail between municipal facilities. “It is important that we all take action now to protect our air quality and ensure we have a healthy environment for future generations,” said Mayor Jack Froese. “The Township of Langley prides itself on being an environmental leader, and the addition of this electric vehicle will help by reducing harmful emissions and our carbon footprint.” “Every action that we take to protect our environment makes a difference, and we hope residents will notice the car out and about in the community and give some thought to getting an electric vehicle themselves,” Froese said. “Over its lifetime, the new electric vehicle will reduce car-
bon emissions by 30 tonnes,” said Farzad Ardestani, the Township’s corporate energy manager. “It will also save the Township over $10,000 in fuel costs compared to its gasoline counterpart with a 35 MPG fuel consumption rating, and there will be significant maintenance cost savings.” The new Nissan Leaf complements the Township’s environmentally friendly and efficient corporate fleet, which is one of only six in Canada to have achieved gold status in the E3 Green Fleet program. A national initiative dedicated to green performance, E3 (Energy Environment Excellence) encourages fuel efficiency and the reduction of emissions through new fuels and technologies. As part of the Township’s Fleet Action Plan, the eco-friendly fuel Biodiesel has been introduced, and some large vehicles have been replaced with smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles such as hybrids. GPS tracking systems have also been installed to help with route planning and fuel management. Two electric vehicle charging stations have been installed for
use by the Township fleet. As well, the Township has installed electric vehicle chargers for public use at a number of convenient locations throughout the community to encourage residents wanting to make the switch from gas to electric vehicles. They can be found at: • Township Civic Facility (20338 65 Ave.), upper level parking lot. Available 24/7, two-hour maximum. Level 2 EV charger; free. • Langley Events Centre (7888 200 St.) Available 6 a.m. to midnight daily. Level 2 EV charger; free. DC Fast Charger; charge for electricity used (at cost). • Walnut Grove Community Centre (8889 Walnut Grove Dr.) Available 4:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, two-hour maximum. Level 2 EV charger; free. • W.C. Blair Recreation Centre (22200 Fraser Hwy.) Available 24/7, two-hour maximum. Level 2 EV charger; free. “Transportation-related emissions are the highest out of any source in the Township — 600,000 tons of carbon dioxide in a year,” said Ardestani. “We are doing our part to reduce those numbers and hope others will as well.”

Will a winner of Generation Next Award Mike Will has come a long way, from pumping gas part time to being announced as one of the 10 Generation Next award winners. In 2000, Will worked at Otter Co-op part-time, filling up vehicles.
But these days, Will has much more on his plate. Since 2014, Will has overseen all food operations, the gas bar and convenience stores for Otter Co-op, leading a team of 200 employees. He has also helped open five new stores in
the past two years. And last month, Will was one of 10 rising stars of the grocery trade recognized with Canadian Grocer’s Generation Next Awards. The awards were presented at the Golden Pencil ceremony
at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto on Nov. 23. This was one of two recent honours for Will, who was also a nominee for the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce’s U40 business person of the year award.

Get a charge at TD Canada Trust The TD Canada Trust branch in Langley (19711 Willowbrook Dr.) is one of seven branch locations in B.C. which will now provide courtesy charging stations for use by electric vehicle-driving customers to use while they bank. “We are constantly looking for ways to improve our environmental commitment while also looking for opportunities to raise the bar in customer service,” said Mauro Manzi, senior vice-president, TD Canada Trust – Pacific Region. “From more sustainable branches to longer hours to Sunday banking, the installation of convenient electric vehicle charging stations is our latest way to deliver on this promise.” Electric vehicles use little or no gasoline and often require less maintenance. TD’s electric vehicle charging stations are installed in parking areas at designated locations and are a free service provided to branch customers with electric vehicles. •••

Roster set, Stealth ready for take-off
GARY AH U J A Ti me s Spo r t s
A pair of local players — one who was a lock and the other somewhat of a surprise — have cracked the season-opening lineup for the 2016 edition of the Vancouver Stealth. Garrett Billings — born and raised in Langley — was acquired in the off-season trade by the Stealth, who brought home the first player in National Lacrosse League history to post three straight 100-point seasons. But the surprise comes in the form of Chris Levis, who landed the back-up goalie position. Levis owns and operates Levy’s Source for Sports in Langley but has been out of the league since 2013. This will be his 13th NLL season. The Stealth released their final 24-player roster — 20 on the active roster and another four on the practice roster — on Thursday morning, ahead of the NLL deadline today (Friday). The roster features 16 players who were on last year’s squad. That team went 5-13 and missed the post-season by one game. Vancouver brought in close to 40 players for training camp. “We were in no different position than anyone else,” said Stealth general manager Doug Locker. “Every team had some pretty tough decisions. “It’s a difficult process every season but this year seemed especially hard with the strong group of free agents we signed in the off-season. “We had to release some very good lacrosse players, but that process is now complete and we are extremely happy with the guys who we selected.” “Our staff did a tremendous job balancing the overall roster to add depth and versatility at every position,” he added. The biggest changes to the team come in the Stealth’s own zone. Free agent Travis Cornwall joins returnees Brandon Clelland, Tyler Garrison, Mitch McMichael and Justin Salt as transition players. McMichael was the team’s primary face-off man while Garri-
son is fully healthy after missing more than half of 2015. On defence, Matt Beers returns to Vancouver after a year off, while the team signed Ian Hawksbee, Jeff Moleski and Brier Jonathan in free agency. They join returnees captain Curtis Hodgson and Chris O’Dougherty. “Those guys right away add some punch for us,” Locker said. “I felt like last year we had a lot of transition oriented players and because of injuries, we just ran out of defensive guys, straight up checkers. “I never want to be in that spot again.” Six of the 11 are strong checkers, while the other five will concentrate on transition. “I think the balance is really strong out of the back end. Once we decided who the core defenders were, it was balancing off the pieces to make sure we had that mix that we think will be successful,” Locker said. In goal, Levis will back-up Eric Penney, who has had a great 12 months, the GM said. A rookie last year, Penney got into five games last year after Tyler Richards — the all-time Stealth goaltending leader — had to miss time because of injury. Richards wound up retiring because of concussion issues in the off-season. “We have always been excited about Eric and have had confidence in him,” Locker said about his clear-cut No. 1 goalie in 2016. Penney filled in admirably in 2015 and continued into the summer, winning the top goaltender award in the Western Lacrosse Association with New Westminster. Up front, the Stealth added Billings on the right-side while the team’s top draft pick, second round selection Jordan Durston cracked the line-up on the leftside. “I think anytime a rookie breaks into the league, it is a surprise. He had to come in and demonstrate that he could play at this level, and he did,” Locker said. “We think he brings a ton in terms of what we need in order

Vancouver Stealth’s Mitch McMichael (black jersey, front) is back for another season after making the final roster cut. Langley’s Kyle Belton (white jersey) was not as fortunate, failing to land one of the 24 roster spots. Ryan Wagner (back) was placed on the team’s practice roster.
GA RRETT BILLIN GS to complement the rest of the offensive group.” They join the Stealth’s all-time leading scorer Rhys Duch and 2014 NLL rookie of the year Lo-
gan Schuss as the core of the attack. Duch led the team with 41 goals and 103 points last season, while Corey Small (32 goals) and Joel McCready (30 goals) also cracked the 30-goal plateau. Rounding out the forward group is C H RIS versatile forward LEVIS Cliff Smith. Vancouver begins the season with two players on the injured reserve list with transition player Tyler Hass and defender Rory Smith.

Neither are eligible to return to the active roster until February. And Keegan Bal (forward), Cody Hagedorn (goalie), Jarrett Toll (transition) and Ryan Wagner (defence) were named to the Stealth’s practice roster. Locker was particularly excited about Wagner, a fifth-round draft pick in 2015. “It is not that common that a fifth round pick makes it onto the roster. Ryan was exceptional at camp and has a real strong upside moving into the coming years,” he said. While the rest of the NLL gets underway next weekend, Vancouver will have to wait an extra week as they host the New England Black Wolves at the Langley Events Centre on Jan. 9 in their season opener.

A trio of Langley cross-country runners were honoured at the B.C. Athletics year-end athletics banquet. The banquet was Dec. 5 at Richmond’s Hilton Airport Hotel. Brooke Mussche (midget female), Jordan Schmidt (midget male) and Nickolas Colyn (junior male) were named the cross-country runners of the year for their respective age group. The trio are all members of the Langley Mustangs Track and Field Club. Colyn was a joint winner along side John Gay of the Okanagan Athletics Club. Two other Mustangs members — javelin thrower Rori Denness (midget female) and 800m and 1500m run-
ner Fiona Benson (senior female) — were track and field athlete of the year nominees for their age groups. Benson was also one of nine Mustangs recognized at the banquet for representing Canada on the world stage in 2015. She competed at the world track and field championships. Others earning recognition were: Georgia Ellenwood (FISU Games), Dean Ellenwood and Megan Champoux (world youth championships), Teagan Rasche and Brent Reston (Panamerican junior championships), Braedon Dolfo (Parapan American Games), and Dylan Williamson and Dustin Walsh (Parapan American Games, world championships).

Goaltender Matthew Reeves earned game MVP honours — making several key stops early while Nick Cormack, the team’s heart and hustle award winner, dished out three assists. Owen Kredba played a solid game on defence. Game two required no rally as Langley beat the Kelowna Bruins 7-1.

The local Kelowna bantam hockey teams are surely glad to see the Langley Eagles have left town. The bantam C3 hockey team was in Kelowna for a 16-team tournament from Dec. 11 to 13 with Langley going unbeaten (40-1) against five Kelowna squads in a span of less than 48 hours to claim the gold medal. And the Eagles won in dramatic fashion, as tournament MVP Greg Song one-timed a pass in the slot from Trevor Young to bury the game-winner with less than two minutes to play in a 3-2 victory over West Kelowna. Joshua Laird also had a goal, converting a bullet cross-ice pass from Carson Yee. “Placing first out of 16 teams is a true testament of this team’s
sen for the past five years and learned a lot from him. I am going to be a coach that demands hard work and accountability from every single player in hopes of getting the best out of them,” Rhodes said. Continued Page 33

Former Rams great returns Honoured as one of the B.C. Football Conference’s greatest players of all-time back in 2007, Shawn Olson is returning to the Langley Rams as the junior football team’s new offensive co-ordinator. Olson quarterbacked the Rams organization from 1992 to 1995 and won three Cullen Cups and a Western Canadian championship. He threw for 5,758 yards and 62 touchdowns in four seasons.
Olson followed that up with a stellar five-year run as quarterback of the UBC Thunderbirds, earning a Canada West all-star award three times and leading the team to the Vanier Cup — the Canadian national university title — in 1997. Olson finished with a career 9,953 yards passing (second all-time in UBC history), 1,276 yards rushing and 65 total touchdowns (55 passing and 10 rushing) to rank among the

It’s the season of giving, and organizers of the Women’s World Softball Championships are giving local sports-minded residents the opportunity to do exactly that. Organizers of the prestigious tournament — set for July 15-24 next year — are currently offering discounts for anyone wishing to beat the rush and leave game tickets under the Christmas tree next week. In addition, organizers are accepting donations to help some international teams offset travel costs so they are able to participate in next summer’s event. Donations “will support the fulfillment of a tremendous journey for these young women, as well as support the many programs and activities organizers have planned to inspire youth to engage in sport,” according to a news release. “The foundation of softball itself is based on co-operation and teamwork, which is exactly what is required to successfully execute an event of this size.” Greg Timm, chair of the tournament’s organizing committee, is confident that the fundraising efforts will be well-received. “We’re confident our community will assist us to create an exceptional and welcoming softball tournament,” he said. Dash cams at top of motorist gift lists filled with techno gadgets Santa will doubtless be dashing about delivering dash cams by the dozen, as they are top of many gift wish lists this year. Most people see the onboard cameras, which continuously record the driver’s view of the road through the windshield, as a great way of gathering video evidence in the event of a collision. Internet websites featuring often hair-raising video of dramatic crashes are drawing viewers in their millions. Thousands of eyewitness videos featuring car crashes, narrow escapes, and even staged crashes designed to commit insurance fraud have been uploaded to YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and dash cam dedicated websites. The cheapest units start from as little as $30 but as is always the case with technology, you only get what you pay for. Testing by the Driveway team shows that for less than $100, you can get a serviceable camera for your car. However, if you want to install a more sophisticated version that records such information as date/time, speed, G-forces and location then get ready to spend more than $200. Yours truly bought a BlackVue DR3500-Full HD system, which retails for more than $400. I would recommend it for commercial fleets and people like me who want to record trips for

Nissan has launched a Spotify playlist specially curated by LEAF fans around the world in celebration of the fifth anniversary of the delivery of the world’s first all-electric Nissan LEAF. “Nissan LEAF owners are among our most enthusiastic customers, and we wanted to get them involved in a unique way as we celebrate LEAF’s anniversary, so we asked followers on Facebook and Twitter which songs they would choose to honour the all-electric vehicle’s five years on the road,” said Andrew Speaker, director, Electric Vehicle Sales & Marketing, Nissan. “With suggestions ranging from No. 1 hits to obscure B-side tracks, LEAF fans helped us cultivate the perfect soundtrack for this occasion.” Users can search for the

Key Nissan models recognized for safety. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has recognized four Nissan vehicles with Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+) or Top Safety Pick (TSP) designations for 2016. The U.S.-based IIHS awarded the all-new 2016 Nissan Maxima a “Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+) safety rating, which is the group’s highest designation. The 2016 Nissan Maxima joins the previously announced 2016 Murano with the TSP+ rating. The Maxima scored “Good in all five TSP categories and earned TSP+ status with a “Superior rating for front crash prevention for those models equipped with Forward Emergency Braking. The 2016 Nissan Sentra joins the 2016 Rogue in earning an IIHS “Top Safety Pick rating.
The 2016 Sentra, which goes on sale in January, will offer Forward Emergency Braking. Once that system is tested by IIHS the Sentra has the potential to be upgraded to a TSP+ rating. Nissan’s top selling 2016 Altima will undergo IIHS testing next month with the possibility of achieving a TSP+ rating as well. For this year, IIHS has tightened its standards by requiring a “Good or better rating in all five of the crashworthiness categories to earn a “Top Safety Pick and making an available front crash prevention system mandatory for all awards. To earn the IIHS “Top Safety Pick Plus designation, a vehicle must earn a “Good or better on all five crashworthiness categories and also receive an “Advanced or “Superior rating for front crash prevention.
The 2016 Nissan Maxima (shown) and Murano have been awarded IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus status while the 2016 Rogue and Sentra have been recognized as IIHS Top Safety Picks when equipped with Forward Emergency Braking.

U.S.-based WardsAuto has named the 2016 Nissan Maxima’s new 3.5-litre VQ-series V6 engine to its annual “Wards 10 Best Engines” list for 2016. It marks Nissan’s 17th Wards 10 Best Engines trophy and the auto company’s 15th for the VQ-series V6, the most awarded engine in 10 Best Engines history. The Maxima’s 300-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 engine will be honored at the Wards 10 Best Engines banquet on Wednesday, January 13, in Detroit. In selecting this year’s winners, WardsAuto editors spent October and November evaluating 31 all-new or improved powertrains. No instrumented testing was involved –
simply driving to and from home, work, school, and everyday activities. Factors considered include horsepower, torque, comparative specs, noise attenuation, fuel economy and the application of new technology. The 3.5-litre VQ-series V6’s 61 percent new parts, reduced friction and weight, and new intake manifold (versus the previous generation design) among key factors in the Maxima’s inclusion on this year’s list. The engine applies lessons learned from the legendary GT-R, such as sodium-filled valves, to meet the needs of the higher compression ratio and combustion temperatures.

Mazda has announced that three of its vehicles have been named as “2016 Top Safety Pick+” recipients by the nonprofit U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The 2016 Mazda CX-5 compact crossover, Mazda3 compact sedan and five-door and Mazda6 midsize sedan each provide class-leading safety protection, according to the IIHS. In IIHS testing, vehicles are subjected to a gauntlet of rollover and collision tests—the small-overlap front crash test being one of the latest and one of the most stringent. The IIHS notes that approximately 25 per cent of traffic fatalities occur in small-overlap crashes, which put more force onto a smaller piece of the car’s structure than other current frontal-collision tests. To attain Top Safety Pick+ honors, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of “Good” for 2016 in five body-structure categories, including small-overlap crash-testing, and have an advanced rating in available collision-prevention technologies like automatic braking—a new requirement in this year’s evaluations. CX-5, Mazda3 and Mazda6 are available with advanced safety technologies as part of a full suite called i-ACTIVSENSE. i-ACTIVSENSE includes Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC), Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) for low-speed braking, Smart Brake Support for highway-speed braking, and, in select vehicles, Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, among other features.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ilene Hart (92 yrs), on November 26th, 2015. She is predeceased by her husband of 38 years, Gordon. Her brothers Wally, Bob and her younger sister Sylvia also passed away previous to Ilene. She is survived by her brothers, Lorne, Dennis (Sharon) and Myron (Doreen), her children, Susan (Ron), George (Leslie), Peter (Sharon), as well as her 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She was born at home on April 11, 1923, in Leroy, Saskatchewan to Anton and Alma Johnson. At 18, she left the family farm to go to college and take her teachers training which led to her first teaching position in a one room school house on the prairie. She loved teaching children of all ages, excelling at math and literature. She met Gordon in Melville, Sk. He had just returned from serving overseas in WW2 and had started his own Jewelry store. They were married in 1952, and in the late 50’s, the family moved to BC, living in Burnaby, Port Coquitlam, and later retiring in Pitt Meadows. They enjoyed square-dancing, road trips and spending time with others. At 80 yrs, she moved to Langley to be closer to her family. Throughout her life she could be described as a smart, witty and giving person, and proud of her Norwegian heritage. She was a great cook who was famous for her homemade cookies and buns. She loved flowers, reading and playing cribbage when ever she could. Special thanks to all the staff at Langley Lodge who cared for her. You all went the extra mile! A Celebration of Life Tea will be held on Saturday, April 16th in Langley, BC. Please contact Susan Mackinnon (nicaraguasue@ gmail.com) for further details. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory will be accepted at Langley Lodge, or a charity of your choice. She will be deeply missed.
