Battling against addiction
CHRISTMAS AT THE CLARKE
District to host forum in new year Kevin Mills Mission Record
Mission wants to take a leadership role in the fight against addiction, and the first battleground is education. The District of Mission will host a forum on the treatment of addictions in the new year, which will include all models of treatment, including harm reduction, needle exchange, abstinence and more. The all-day event is scheduled for Feb. 4 and will take place at the Clarke Theatre. The city has budgeted $5,500 to host the forum, and will partner with the Mission school district to present the event. “Part of that forum is going to provide an education piece for parents on what to look for with their children,” explained Coun. Carol Hamilton at a recent council meeting. She said parents often say they had no idea, or there were no signs, that their child was experimenting with drugs. “I can tell you from my own experience, when you don’t recognize the signs, it can lead to problems with your kids,” said Mayor Randy Hawes. “Addiction visited my home,” he said. Hawes’ son battled an addiction problem, but has now recovered. Hawes said his son will be in recovery for his whole life. “Now I do know what to look for. I do know what the signs are. I do know what to do and I just wish all parents did.” He feels all parents should attend the three-part forum. The morning session will be for service providers, examining what opportunities exist and what is new and innovative, as well as identifying gaps and service challenges and exploring partnership opportunities. The afternoon session will be held for mayor and council members, to explore promising community initiatives and continuing challenges. The evening portion is for parents and includes addiction prevention, warning signs and how to access services. Continued on A3
Singers Crystal Hicks, Chantelle Davidson and Dana Wright – all from the group Horizon – closed out the 2015 Christmas at the Clarke fundraising concert on Wednesday night with a selection of songs. The annual event raises money for the Mission Christmas Bureau and the Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley. The amount raised was not available at press time, but organizers were pleased with the large turnout. BOB FRIESEN PHOTO

School district pay increases slightly Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News
Former Missionite Rob Hess (right) blended his strong voice with the harmonies of Rosslyn Delmonico on several Christmas standards during the annual Christmas at the Clarke fundraising event held on Wednesday night.
Despite teachers’ new contract, Mission Public Schools paid out only slightly more to employees in 2014-15 than the previous year, according to the district’s Statement of Financial Information released Tuesday. The district paid its employees – which include teachers, administrators and support staff – just under $40 million in 2014-15. That’s up only 0.75 per cent over the previous year, when the district paid employees a total of $39.7 million. Of that $40 million spent last year, $12.8 million went to the 148 employees making more than $75,000 a year, while $27 million went to those making less than that level. In the the previous year, 144 employees made more than that amount. Of that, 29 administrators made in excess of $100,000
last year. That’s up from 22 the previous year. Superintendent Bill Fletcher was the highest-paid district employee, making $163,839 in 20142015. Secretary-treasurer Wayne Jefferson was the second highest, collecting $153,687. Assistant superintendent Randy Huth made $148,644. The total pay for Mission’s elected school trustees rose slightly last year to $92,197 compared to the previous year, when the trustees made a combined $90,641. The election of a new board in November 2014 meant last year’s figure was split among seven trustees, with Jim Taylor – who served as chair prior to the election – earning $18,445. He was followed by Shelley Carter and Randy Cairns, who made $17,760 and $17,633, respectively.

Waste plan given go-ahead The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) has received approval of its new solid waste management plan by B.C.’s Minister of Environment. All regional districts are required to prepare and submit a solid waste management plan to the ministry to ensure it meets provincial rules and expectations for waste management. The FVRD’s updated solid waste management plan will guide the efforts of the FVRD and its member municipalities, including Mission, to reduce and manage the region’s garbage over the next 10 years. The plan includes the estab-
lishment of a mixed waste materials recovery facility, also known as an MRF. MRFs use a combination of mechanical, optical, and manual sorting to remove leftover recyclable or compostable material from the waste stream. The facility aims to complement continued growth in the FVRD’s traditional recycling efforts. The FVRD contrasted its plan to build an MRF with Metro Vancouver’s controversial proposal to burn its garbage, which it put on hold last week. “Compared to garbage incineration, MRFs are more cost-effective and have no negative impact on air qual-
ity, the FVRD said in a release. “Combined with job creation opportunities and higher waste diversion, an MRF will be a strategic part of the FVRD’s new approach to solid waste management. “The FVRD is seeking partnerships with other regional districts and municipalities who also plan to maximize materials recovery from waste before disposal. By working together with the private sector, and taking advantage of economies of scale, the FVRD hopes to lead by example and implement a true Zero Waste management system in British Columbia.
All treatments to be explored From A1
While Fraser Health will play a big role in the event, Hawes doesn’t want it to “dominate the discussions. He wants to ensure the event “actually focuses on all of the facets of
drug recovery and treatment. What works for one doesn’t work for others. A full array of recovery methods should be available. While this is the only forum being planned at present,
Hawes said if it is successful, more could be held. “I think we have a problem that we have to come to grips with as a community, said Hawes. For updates on the addiction forum, visit mission.ca.

Landlord inappropriately kissed and touched tenant Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
A Mission man has been convicted of sexual assault for kissing his tenant and touching her breast without her consent in 2013. Dilbagh Singh Cheema, 52, was also found guilty of assault for a second incident in which he kissed the woman. The ruling was made Nov. 30 in Abbotsford provincial court. Cheema’s sentencing hearing has been scheduled for March 16. The court heard that the complainant met Cheema in September 2013 when she began renting a property of his. She testified that shortly after she moved in, Cheema phoned her and wanted to see her suite, which she believed was for a “move-in report.” The woman said that as she was telling him about a closet door that needed repairing, Cheema unexpectedly kissed her and told her she was pretty.
Lockdown rumours unfounded
She said she “backed off and froze,” and Cheema then grabbed her and touched her breast. The woman testified that she was not romantically interested in Cheema and had never been flirtatious with him. A second incident of inappropriate conduct took place about two weeks later. On this occasion, the tenant saw Cheema outside looking at something on the property before he knocked on her door. She said she brought Cheema into the bedroom to look at the closet that was broken, and he closed the door and kissed her on the lips. The woman quickly left the room and, after Cheema left, told her visiting niece what had happened. Her niece suggested she report the circumstances to police, but the woman said she was worried she would be evicted if she did. “But she was convinced to report the incidents and she did in fact receive an eviction
Facebook was buzzing about a suspected lockdown at West Heights Elementary, but fears were soon put to rest. The Mission RCMP were in the area of the school on Monday after-
notice two days after she gave a statement to police about these incidents,” Judge Kenneth Skilnick stated in his written ruling. Cheema’s lawyer suggested in court that the woman and Cheema had an intimate relationship, but the complainant adamantly denied this, and Skilnick said there was no evidence to back up the assertion. Skilnick said he found the woman to be a credible witness. “Time and time again in her evidence, she did not waver from the fact that she had no romantic interest in the accused, she never flirted with him and she never consented to the accused taking the liberties with her that he did,” the judge stated. Skilnick said that Cheema, as a landlord, had been in a position of power over the tenant, and that his behaviour had violated her “sexual integrity.” “She was entitled to trust him not to make her living space unsafe for her,” Skilnick said.
noon; however, there was never a lockdown. Police were serving an arrest warrant for a suspect that lives in the area. The suspect was not at home at the time.

OPINION
Published & printed by Black Press Ltd. at 33047 First Avenue, Mission V2V 1G2
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Addiction: It’s a community issue Drug addiction impacts more than just users. It hurts friends, family and even the community itself. Frequent complaints about the homeless in Mission are an example of that. And while not every homeless person is an addict, evidence shows that many are. So if addiction is a personal, family and community problem, it only makes sense that the community as a whole needs to get involved in finding solutions. With that idea in mind, the District of Mission is planning to host a forum on addiction in February and will invite politicians, service groups and the public to come together and share
Do you think the community of Mission has a growing addiction problem?
their stories, ideas, solutions and treatments. All ideas are welcome. The forum will not stop addiction, nor is it meant to, but it is a first step to try and get all parties to work together on a problem that has grown out of hand in communities everywhere. While treatment is out there, many have no idea how to access it, or what form of treatment will help. The city should be applauded for taking this step. Opening the door to educational opportunities is key in what will be a long, long fight. Addiction will always be with us. The least we can do is be knowledgeable of what to look for, and ready and able to help.

Clark on carbon tax, government ads Tom Fletcher
B.C. Views Premier Christy Clark sat down with Tom Fletcher for a year-end interview at her Victoria office Dec. 9. Here are excerpts. For the full version, see the Opinion tab at missioncityrecord. com TF: At the UN climate conference in Paris, did you speak about natural gas as a transition fuel, and did you find support for that idea? PCC: Yes and yes. The new government in Ottawa is a big supporter of our LNG plan, and part of the reason for that is that they also see it as a way forward for Canada to make a huge contribution to fighting global climate change. There are 150 coal plants on the books in China today. The only way that those plants and the ones that come after will be stopped is if they have a transitional fuel to move to.
TF: B.C.’s 2020 greenhouse gas target, reduction of emissions by a third, is another target that isn’t going to be met. Why? PCC: When the government brought in the carbon tax, it was based on the assumption that other jurisdictions around us were going to eventually catch up. And none of them have. There comes a point where the carbon tax can only get so high before we start chasing all those jobs out of the province. TF: Your advisory committee says the carbon tax needs to go higher starting in 2018 if it’s going to have an effect. Do you have any other choice? PCC: Let’s figure out what the national goal is going to be, which we don’t know yet. TF: On a related topic, transit spending. Your new minister Peter Fassbender has talked about a “new day” in Ottawa and he’s downplaying the idea of another referendum for new funding sources. Is that off the table now? PCC: It may be possible that the federal government wants to invest more in transit, and take up some of the slack from the local government level.
TF: On LNG, oil and natural gas prices continue to go down, and supply continues to go up around the world. Did you see any positive signs this year? PCC: What I saw this year was developing countries, especially China, making a firm commitment to reduce their emissions.
When the government brought in the carbon tax, it was based on the assumption that other jurisdictions around us were going to eventually catch up. The only way for them to do that is to move to a greater degree to natural gas, and the bulk of their industry is still located on the east coast of their country, a long way from Russia and close to B.C. TF: Are we going to see some policy action on high housing costs in 2016, and will there be some relief from the prop-
erty transfer tax? PCC: You’ll see in the February budget, but we are looking for ways to provide some relief for home buyers. TF: We’re starting to see government advertising ramp up. We saw a lot of Jobs Plan advertising before the 2013 election, we saw the federal government do it with their Economic Action Plan, which was very expensive, and to most people’s eye self-serving or political in nature at taxpayers’ expense. Is that what we’re going to see in the next year and a half? PCC: It won’t be political. I think some of that was, really, political. You will see more information-based advertising out there, talking to people about for example, the Registered Education Savings Plan. TF: Not Jobs Plan 2.0? PCC: I don’t think that’s in the plan. I wish I could say to you no, never, but I, you know….

In the interim, should Randy Hawes not think that he has drastically devalued my property, I suggest that he buy it and try to sell it for a fair amount and see how well he does. Randy Hawes has stated in the article that it would cost about four million dollars to expropriate my and my neighbour’s house. If our properties were worth four million, we would be ecstatic! The reality of our property values is far from that. In any case, after the District of Mission expropriates our properties, much of that cost could be recovered by the city by re-selling the properties after the city rezones the properties as commercial. The expropriated properties are only a small portion of the cost of the intersection im-

This is a comment on Randy Hawes’ latest comment on the search for a solution to the Cedar Street and 7th Avenue intersection issues. I am a homeowner who was previously informed by the District of Mission that my property was to be expropriated. Now, with no consultation with me or any provision of information to me, Randy Hawes has informed the Mission City Record that a temporary solution to the intersection’s issues is being considered. One blanket can make a huge difference Kevin Mills Mission Record
When Gregory Ould offered a blanket to a
homeless man back in 1995, he didn’t realize he was about to change his life’s focus.
Ould is the co-founder, along with his son Ben, of Blanket BC Society, an organiza-

Ould recalled that in October of 2005, he came out of a movie theatre in Vancouver and noticed a man sitting in an alcove. He approached the stranger and asked if there was anything he could do to help him. “He said, ‘I could use a blanket to survive the night.’ ” It was the “survive the night” comment that “floored” Ould. “I never thought about it like that before,” he said. Ould went to a local store and purchased the warmest blanket he could find. “It made me feel good,” he explained. When Ould got home, his 22-monthold son Ben was still awake. While he knows he was really just talking out loud to himself, Ould reiterated the story to Ben. “But he acknowledged me,” said Ould, who then realized he and his son could do something more to help. He began to collect blankets to give away to shelters. In the first year he managed to acquire a modest amount, 67 blankets in all. But word spread and support grew. By the third year, in a three-month period, they collected 15,000 blankets. Now the society
Gregory Ould and his son Ben, both from Mission, are co-founders of the Blanket BC Society. KEVIN MILLS PHOTO has blossomed into a year-round initiative composed of between 100 and 200 volunteers (blanketeers, he calls them) working throughout the year. When he was five, Ould’s son Ben began to lend a hand. “That’s when I really started to help,” he said. “I’d go out and help deliver blankets.” The father/son team helped take the society to the next level. To date, the Blanket BC Society has collected more than 200,000 blankets, which they donate to more than 75 shelters across the province. “A lot of people in Mission don’t realize that we are headquartered here,” said Ould. Now he needs to find a storage space in
Mission or Abbotsford to house the blankets before they get distributed. Recently, Ben and Gregory were honoured by the BC C o u n t ry Music Association. On Oct. 25, the father/son duo received the group’s Humanitarian of the Year award for their work with Blanket BC. While both Gregory and Ben enjoyed the recognition, they say awards are not why they volunteer their time. “I just want to help them survive the night because that one day could change their lives,” said Gregory. Santa was kept busy last week as he spent some time in Mission to meet with some four-legged friends. The annual Me and My Pet Pictures with Santa took place to benefit the Fraser Valley Humane Society. In all, 41 families attended and brought a variety of pets including all types of dogs from tiny Pomeranians to bull mastiffs. There were also six cats and two ferrets. The event raised $900. Kevin Smith was at the event “helping” Santa. He has been involved for the past 10 years. Smith’s mother was one of the founding members of the Fraser Valley Humane Society and his father used to assist Santa, until Smith took over. “I’ve always helped the animals. It’s a family thing. All of our family has been involved, one way are another. It’s just been part of my life since I can remember,” said Smith. Auxiliary pledges $300,000 for ultrasound unit The Mission Health Care Auxiliary Society has pledged $300,000 for a new ultrasound unit for Mission Memorial Hospital (MMH). It is the second such pledge from the auxiliary, whose mandate is to support MMH through their volunteer efforts and fundraising. Three years ago, they pledged $300,000 to support the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation’s fundraising campaign for The Residence in Mission, the new residential facility adjacent to the hospital. That pledge was fulfilled ahead of schedule, so the auxiliary went in search of the next big need at the hospital. “The Mission Health Care Auxiliary has a long history of partnering with us in the
provision of patient-centered care, said Laurel Scheffler, director of clinical operations for MMH. “This is another example of the incredible work that occurs daily by these dedicated individuals. The go-ahead has already been given by the foundation to order the ultrasound. Fraser Health and the foundation have the ability to enter into long-term arrangements to fund larger pieces of equipment. “The people of Mission who support the auxiliary either at The Cottage by donating items or by purchasing them, as well as supporting our hospital gift shop, can be very proud to have made possible the addition of a third ultrasound, said Wendy Matus, president of
the auxiliary. Dave Bissoondatt, site co-ordinator for medical imaging, looks forward to increasing the capacity of his department. The department now runs seven days a week and sees approximately 156 patients. Even with the recent addition of patients from surrounding communities, Mission still has a lower wait time than other hospitals. “A third ultrasound room will help us add 60 to 84 tests per week. This will decrease the wait times and allow MMH to be a great partner in assisting Chilliwack and Abbotsford hospitals deliver better patient care. A shorter wait time means a quicker diagnosis and faster treatment for the patient, he said.

The Mission Christmas Bureau would like to thank all those who have brought in or sent donations so far this season. The organization has now received approximately $60,000, or 50 per cent of the finances needed to have a successful season. The bureau is still accepting registrations, so if you know someone who needs assistance, please let them know that help is available. The Festival of Trees brought in more than $1,300, 300 pounds of food, some great gifts and some beautiful trees. The second West Coast Express Santa Train had about 1,200 passengers from Mission and many helpful gifts were donated. As Christmas approaches, the bureau’s biggest need is still financial donations. The largest need for gift items is still teen gifts.

Boxing win a great birthday gift Mission junior boxer scores a victory in his amateur debut Ben LYPKA
New Patients Welcome!
Abbotsford News
Mission’s Markus Heikkila will never forget his 15th birthday. In front of over 250 people at Durieu Elementary on Dec. 5, Heikkila battled for three rounds in the squared circle and picked up the first amateur boxing win of his career. “It was a great birthday present,” he said. “I had a whole bunch of friends and family there and I didn’t want to let them down. There was lots of pressure, but it was super exciting and we had an awesome celebration after.” Heikkila’s fight went to the judges, and he said his endurance helped him earn the bout win. “My opponent came out really strong; he was a very aggressive fighter,” he said. “But he seemed to tire himself out after his big assault at the start. I started getting him back, and I had a little bit better cardio than he did and I outlasted him.” He said months of training prepared him for the first time he got hit in a competitive match. “When you’re up there and you’re excited and nervous, you barely notice it,” he said. The Grade 10 Mission Secondary student has only been involved with boxing since the summer, and said it’s been a great experience training with the Mission City Boxing Club (MCBC). “My mom was kind of opposed to it at first but it’s a sport that I was really interested in,” he said. “I like the athletic part of it, and it keeps you in great shape.” Heikkila’s fight was one of 11 bouts put on by the MCBC to mark its 10th anniversary. He said he trains about three times a week for about 90 minutes at the club, working on sparring, cardio, pad work and bag work. Heikkila said the work at the MCBC has ignited his passion for boxing. “They’re excellent trainers,” he said. “They watch over all that we’re doing and give us tips on technique and training.” All the hard work paid off with the victory, but Heikkila was also awarded the club’s best young boxer trophy for 2015. Mission City boxers Seth Granger, Ivan Boyd, Daniel Fulton, Harfi Bhullar and Kabeer Poonia also had bouts at the event. In the 10 years of the MCBC’s existence, there have been six national champions, as well as a gold medalist and bronze medalist in the Canada Winter Games. There have also been several provincial champions that have come out of the club. For more information on the MCBC, visit missionboxing.com.

Outlaws drop third straight Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News
For the first time this season, the Mission City Outlaws are hitting a rough patch. The Outlaws have now lost three in a row, after falling 4-3 to the Aldergrove Kodiaks at the Mission Leisure Centre on Saturday. Mission opened the scoring at 5:35, when Sammy Zeinab lit the lamp, but that would be the Outlaws’ only lead of the game. Aldergrove scored a power play goal mid-way through the first period, then added two more goals with the

Brock Padgham got the Outlaws within a goal just 20 seconds into the third period, but the Kodiaks made it a two-goal lead again just 76 seconds later. Mission’s Nicholas Thompson scored with 49 seconds left to draw the Outlaws within one, but it wouldn’t be enough. Padgham recorded three points on the night, and was named the third star. Outlaws goalie Jeffrey Veitch made 24 saves in a losing cause. Mission only managed 20 shots on goal, including only two in the first period. The Outlaws took on Richmond on Thursday, but results were not available at press time. They travel to North Vancouver to battle the Wolf Pack on Saturday, which is the club’s final game of 2015. Every year for the past nine years, Mission’s Opening Nite Theatre Society has presented a Christmas pantomime. This year it’s The Good, The Bad, and The Showdown at the Panto Corral, and it’s a silly, hilarious, music-filled romp through the town of Sanoosha Gulch, where Fairy Nice and Fairy Naughty battle it out via Young McCoy and Big Bad Barry the Brutish. With opening weekend behind them, there are three more weekends of fun left. Tickets to the show can be purchased at openingnitetheatre.com, ontstickets@hotmail.com, 604-826ONTS, or by showing up at the door. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 p.m., Sunday shows are at 2 p.m. The production runs Dec. 18-20 and Jan. 1-10. Auditions for ONTS’s next show, Happy Birthday by Marc Camoletti, take place Jan. 4 and 5 at 7 p.m. For details, go to the upcoming events page at openingnitetheatre.com.

GOD WAS ONCE LIKE US
A central tenet of Christianity is that God became man in the embodied form of Jesus, in order that we might know how to live a godly life. Christians don’t expect to become gods, but we do hope to become more godlike by following the example of Jesus. There were a host of heresies in the early Church concerning Christ’s divinity. The Arian heresy claimed that Christ was divine but created, and thus not con substantial (of the same substance) with God the father. Others believed that Christ was divine but not human, arguing that his suffering on the cross, and any other suffering which he underwent, were mere illusions. These issues were largely settled at the first council of Nicaea in 325 AD, which asserted in the Nicene Creed that Christ was “God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in being with the Father.” But, in what sense was Christ fully human? Christ’s humanity is, ironically, more of a mystery than his divinity. How could God become man? The Gospels are essentially an attempt to answer that question, or at least for God, in the form of a man, to show us how to live a fully human life. “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” Philippians 2:5-7

’Tis the season for gifts, lights, trees and delicious dinners. Whether you’re celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Festivus this holiday season, the Recycling Council of BC (RCBC) has come up with ideas to help you celebrate your holiday in ways that also reduce your environmental footprint. Brock Macdonald, RCBC’s chief executive officer, says, “We’re asking British Columbians to rethink how they celebrate, and explore some new, greener traditions” Among Macdonald’s suggestions: Opt for a live potted Christmas tree. He also suggests switching to LED light strings, which use 90 per cent less energy than incandescent lights, without the fire risk. As well, giving experiences as gifts is another great option. Instead of a cookbook, give a certificate for a cooking class or a foodie tour. To avoid disposable plastics, decorate by bringing nature inside. Cedar and pine tree branches, acorns and potted plants can bring colour and life into a room. They can also be composted at the end of their use, so no branch or leaf has to go to waste. As Macdonald pointed out, “Canadians already understand the importance of a healthy environment, but sometimes we forget that our everyday ac-

Some of the matched “Littles” in the Fraser Valley recently came together for a photo shoot to promote the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and help other kids find mentors. SUBMITTED PHOTO
Always looking for more Bigs Nine boys and eight girls still waiting for a mentor With January fast approaching, many Mission residents are considering New Year’s resolutions to eat better, exercise more, or make other positive lifestyle changes. Mentoring co-ordinator Cassie Silva of the local Big Brothers Big Sisters office is encouraging people to consider a resolution that will positively impact their lives as well as the life of a child in need. “We currently have nine boys and eight girls on the wait list for a Big Brother or a Big Sister in Mission, and some have been waiting up to two years. I would love to hear from any potential volunteers to discuss our waiting kids and how the program can work around your schedule,” said Silva. She explained the kids on the
wait list are often from single-parent homes, and all of them would benefit from another supportive adult in their life to spend time with. “We have lots of little boys who live with their mom and sisters who are dying for some guy time – to get away from the girls and just go kick a ball around or watch a movie with a man. Some of these boys have witnessed domestic violence and really would benefit from the opportunity to see what a healthy relationship with a man can look like. We also have girls on our wait list who live with single dads and don’t have much family around, who are yearning for a woman to spend time with and talk to.” Being a Big Brother or Big
Sister can provide you the opportunity to get in touch with your inner child by playing at a playground, doing a science experiment, crafting a gingerbread house, or having someone to go see Disney movies with. Big Brothers and Big Sisters can be any age (19-plus), and opportunities exist for Grade 10-12 students as well. Lots of Mission kids have asked for a Big Brother or a Big Sister for Christmas, but Santa needs some help. Visit mentoringworks.ca to explore the different volunteer programs available in Mission or get in touch with mentoring co-ordinator Cassie Silva at 604-820-3337 or cassie.silva@bigbrothersbigsisters.ca.

A monthly guide to events, resources and services for Mission Seniors
BOB FRIESEN PHOTO
When you think about it, Santa Claus is the ultimate senior volunteer. He’s old enough to be retired, works for free and seems to have an endless supply of energy and good will. But, Santa has to have helpers. In Mission, Doug Pearson has been “helping” Santa bring joy to young ones for the past 30 years. When you see Santa at the Candlelight Parade or other events, Pearson is always around, although you never seen the two together. For more on Pearson see page 26

Santa: The ultimate senior volunteer Kevin MILLS MISSION RECORD
Anyone who has kids or grandkids knows that the arrival of Santa is cause for huge excitement. But whenever Santa comes to Mission, he usually needs a little help staying organized. That’s where Doug Pearson comes in. Pearson has been “helping” Santa for more than 30 years. He has done it so often, it almost feels like he’s wearing the red suit himself. “I probably do more of these events in Mission than anybody else,” he said. He began his association with Santa when he was with the Kinsmen. He would visit schools all across Mission. He finds himself in more and more demand as Santa’s schedule is pretty busy. He’s heading to Langley twice next week for some private events and has attended the Breakfast with Santa event at Mission Springs. But perhaps the biggest thrill is “helping” Santa at the Candlelight Parade, a job he has exuberantly done for the past 15 years. “The parade is unbelievable, because of the kids. The enthusiasm
of the kids just gives me a great feeling. It’s hard to explain. When you see the kids cheering and hollering, it’s great, awesome.” He said this year’s parade was something special. “The turn out this year was unbelievable, so many kids. I didn’t think we had that many kids in Mission.” Spending so much time with Santa, Pearson said you hear a lot of funny tales. “There are so odd requests and funny moments,’ he said. But for the most part, children are just thrilled to see him. He said being at the mall in Abbotsford was “kind of crazy” but he doesn’t do that anymore because Mission keeps him busy. “I’ve got 26 0r 27 events to do this year.” When not “assisting” Santa, Pearson is the president of the drop-in activities at Mission’s Seniors Centre. “I’m retired but I’m pretty busy.” While he will turn 70 early next year, Pearson said he plans to continue what he’s doing for as long as he can. “I’m just taking it year by year.”
Funding helps Mission seniors Mission Community Services Society (MCSS) is receiving funding to stock up the shelves at their food bank, thanks to a $48,000 grant from the B.C. government. Funding will also go towards their Meals on Wheels program and Seniors Connection program. “Without this valuable support from the B.C. government we would be challenged to provide these valuable programs that assist so many of Mission’s most vulnerable citizens,” explained MCSS executive director Sanjay Gulati. “Thanks to this funding, valuable services will continue to be provided to members of our community,” Abbotsford-Mission MLA Simon Gibson said. This grant was awarded under the Human and Social Services category of the Community Gaming Grant program which help support the work of local agencies and clubs that deliver important social services to British Columbians facing challenging and difficult situations.

asweage age∙ Symonds will be missed
Mission recently lost a good friend when longtime volunteer Graham Symonds passed away.
The Mission Hospice Society and the community of Mission itself recently lost a good friend when long-time volunteer Graham Symonds passed away. He passed away peacefully in Mission Memorial Hospital surrounded by family and friends. On Nov. 26, the hospice society held a celebration of life for Symonds and more than 80 people came out to honor the volunteer, father, friend
and just amazing man. Symonds immigrated to Canada from England in 1955 along with his two young daughters and the family dog. He was a Cloverdale volunteer firefighter for many years and was chief for at least one of those years. Prior to joining the Surrey Fire Department full time, Symonds worked for the Municipality of Surrey (from 1958 to 1964 approximately). By the 1960s, Surrey began manufacturing its own fire pumpers at the municipal work yard. Eleven of these trucks were manufactured and the last one produced is housed at the Surrey Museum. Symonds was instrumental in building these fire SUBMITTED PHOTO trucks. He worked for the Surrey Fire Department for 23 years (1964 to 1987) before retiring as a captain. After retiring, he moved to Mission in 1989. He was the President of the Surrey Professional Fire Fighters Pioneer Association for 15 years and has been a member since its formation in 1992. Symonds and his wife volunteered at Pleasantview for several years

before his wife became ill and was in Hospice at Christine Morrison. After his wife passed away in 2007, and Symonds saw first hand the good works done at Christine Morrison, he knew that he wanted to volunteer there.
Hospice made life bearable for him after his wife’s passing. He was able to help people and be sociable at the same time. He was a member of the Brits Club and enjoyed the company of fellow Brits at lunch each Wednesday.

Dental Implants This couple has something to smile about. They used to wear dentures, which caused discomfort, an inability to eat many foods and a lack of conÀdence when it came to smiling and talking. Now they enjoy the freedom of NobelSmile dental implants, which are as close to natural teeth as you can get. People who lose a tooth want to replace it with something permanent, says Dr. Lui, instead of something they have to remove. “Once you give someone new, permanent teeth, you can see their personality shine through again.”

SAYS Gordon Dainard
If you are not capable of answering their questions someone else must make decisions for you? This requires careful thought and planning and we think about this more as we age. We start to think about what life vs quality of life means to us and what our beliefs on end of life care means. The first step is deciding what’s important to you should the situation arise. Planning means finding ways to express your wishes in advance so that if you become incapable, your wishes will be respected and followed. This provides information to decision makers to make informed decisions on your behalf. In BC, legislation was amended on September, 1, 2011 to address this. There are forms and information guides and free workshops that explain the various decision maker requirements and the forms.
Have you ever wondered what decisions you may have to make when faced with a medical emergency? We all know to call 911 but then what? It doesn’t matter if you are a 19-yearold adult or a 91-year-old senior, someone – such as emergency medical and hospital personnel or health care providers responsible for your care – will have questions for you.
The main areas covered are: • Temporary Substitute Decision Maker – A list of eligible people that can be appointed including family members as well as close friend. • Representation Agreement – Someone you appoint to act on your behalf. • Advanced Directive – Provides

consent or refusal to health care in advance. • Personal Guardian – Appointed by the court. There are two free Cosco Health and Wellness Society workshops on Advanced Care Planning and Personal Planning available for groups of 10 or more. Please contact Gordon Dainard

Maintaining a relationship with aging parents The sandwich generation is one to be admired. The juggling act between being a parent of young children and being a dutiful child to their own parents, all while keeping a full time job is something that many people are facing today and are quickly burning out. The most difficult aspect of this juggling act is honoring your roles. As so many parents will say, no matter how old a child gets, they are still children. This is where the biggest dilemma stems from.
As a parent ages, they require more support. As they require more support, a child is the first one to volunteer. After all, they raised you right? So as children of aging parents begin to support their aging parents, emotions run high. The aging parents either feel as though they are a burden, or their pride won’t allow their children to help. The “I am your parent, you are my child” sentence continuously arises as children ask their parents to take their medications, or eat proper meals. So how do children of aging
parents maintain the relationship while still ensuring the best care? Caregiving children are the ones that know their parents the best. Their likes, their dislikes, how they feel most comfortable, and what will make them happy. Handing over the reins to someone outside the family is often a struggle, but the majority of those who have asked for outside support have seen improvements all around. For example here is a short scenario about Darryl and Darla. Darryl was always the pro-

tective father, saving his little girl from monsters under the bed and building her that treehouse in the backyard. As he aged, he felt less strong, less confident and having Darla constantly taking care of him, made him feel like a burden. Darla decided to get home care and once Chloe, the caregiver came into the picture, Darryl started to gain confidence. Chloe was taking him out for walks to get his legs moving and strong again, she was feeding him hearty meals to put more meat on his bones and his relationship with Darla improved, because she was again, just his daughter. Her visits were to spend time with Darryl, not to care for him. Ethel and Christina had an amazing mother daughter relationship. They were the best of
friends. They used to go shopping all the time, they went for manicures and even went to the theatre together to watch the newest play that had come to town. A year ago, Ethel was admitted to the hospital and things changed in an instant. Ethel wasn’t getting invited to shopping trips or the theatre anymore. Ethel was feeling depressed and wanted to go home. It was then that Christina and Ethel decided to hire a caregiver to bring her back home. The caregiver was the best decision for the pair because now, as mother and daughter they have the freedom again to go on shopping trips, do family dinners and see shows once in a while, and have a caregiver there to help Ethel if she needs it. Few families are
aware that medical and non-medical care exists beyond the four walls of the hospital. It’s important for family caregivers to utilize available resources in the community, like private home care, to lessen the burdens of care. Unfortunately, it’s often not until there is a medical emergency that the topic of enhanced care is first discussed. It can be challenging to broach the topic of increased care with parents. In fact, the number one fear of seniors is lost independence, which is why seeking help from experts at initiating happy aging talks is so important. The Mission A1 Stars bantam hockey team collected items for the food bank and for Hope Central during their home game on Dec. 5. The team challenged its opponent, the North Shore Winter Club, to bring a box of donations as well. The visitors exceeded that request by bringing three boxes. The players’ friends and family arrived at the game bringing bags and boxes of items. Organizers managed to fill a pickup truck full of donations. The next day, the Mission squad donated their time packing and delivering groceries for customers at Save-On-Foods, collecting more Members of the Mission A1 Stars bantam hockey team helped raise than $600 in cash donations for SUBMITTED PHOTO money and donations for those in need. the local food bank.
Team proud of new defence minister On the Spot
The members of Cycling4Diversity are extremely proud of Harjit Sajjan, who has been cycling with us for the past two years and has been appointed Canada’s new defence minister. This is what he shared with me before he got involved with C4D off one of our Facebook chats a few years ago, and speaks volumes of his character. Sajjan said, “I am very impressed with your efforts and unique approach. I command one of the most diverse regiments in Canada, and I am passionate about positively changing people’s perception of diversity.” I couldn’t think of a better response from someone in his position to lead our nation with the strife we currently face around the globe. In the two years Harjit was involved with C4D, he not only changed people’s perceptions, he left a

lasting impression with everyone he touched building on our message of inclusion. I had the opportunity to meet my good friend Jaspreet Anand, who owns SippChai on Townline in Abbotsford. He started his first annual SippChai Charity Calendar that will benefit many local organizations, and was kind enough to put members of our Cycling4Diversity team in May 2016, along with many other organizations such as Abbotsford Youth Commission, Cyrus Centre, the Salvation Army and Abbotsford Arts Council, to name a few. The calendars are selling for $10 and he is hoping to sell 10,000 calendars. and fries. He’s an avid reader and world-class gardener, along with his late wife Hilda, who passed away a few years back. I had the opportunity to sit down with Warkentin at McDonald’s a few months back and he shared an interesting story about his childhood. The kitchen table is where we learn to care about people who may be different than us. Growing up in Abbotsford, he spoke about being a young child and his mother asking him to deliver a pie and bread to the Mitchells, who lived across the street. He puts it simply, “Nobody trusted them and they trusted no one.” As he approached the door that evening, and he remembers it fondly, Mr. Mitchell would take his gun off the wall and yell, “Who is it?!” As he would open the door slowly, Mitchell would see little Donny with food and would welcome him inside. He describes this valuable lesson from his mother as, “We have to learn to care.”
PAIN AND SUFFERING COMPENSATION FOR A BRAIN INJURY Fiery car crashes – where the hero walks away unscathed – are a Hollywood staple. In real life, unfortunately, the outcome of such a car crash can be very different, inflicting severe and sometimes permanent brain and other injuries on innocent victims. The BC Supreme Court dealt with such a case recently.
pharmacy technician or get another paying job. Pre-accident, she’d been happy, confident, energetic and youthful for her age. Now she had ongoing physical problems and was emotionally up-and-down, fearful, anxious and distressed. The court decided Martin was at fault for the crash and Marian was entitled to compensation.
One disputed item was how much Martin (all names changed) was Stanley T. Cope money Marian should get specifidriving north in an SUV on the Sunshine Coast. He wanted to pass a slower cally for her pain, suffering and loss of enjoypick-up truck ahead. Impatient, and with a ment of life. He struck an older Toyota Corolla, head-on, so it ended up 20 to 30 metres away. The accident scene afterwards was one of mayhem and mangled steel. Marian, 59 at the time, had to be extracted from her Corolla with difficulty. She seemed almost lifeless, but was rushed by ambulance and air-lifted to Vancouver General Hospital. She survived – but only barely. As a result of the crash, she suffered a severe traumatic brain injury and also multiple fractures needing many surgeries. She was in a coma for a month and spent five months in various hospital facilities, starting with the intensive care unit of VGH and later progressing to the G. F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre. Two years later, Marian had made a remarkable recovery. She had regained basic functions and considerable independence, so she could dress, cook, drive, shop and go to the library by herself. But her recovery had reached a plateau. Her mental processing speed and ability to focus and keep appointments had been affected. She couldn’t resume her job as a
Unlike some other cases where the maximum has been given, Marian didn’t need constant supervision, and her behaviour wasn’t a potential threat to herself or others. But she had endured a great deal of injury and pain, both physical and mental, as a result of the crash, and was facing more of both indefinitely. In the circumstances, the court decided $300,000 was appropriate for this aspect of compensation. Determining the right amount of money to compensate victims of brain injuries (to the extent money can do that) is complex. There’s usually a lot of money at stake – to compensate for lost past and future earnings and future care costs, as well as for pain, suffering and loss of enjoyment of life. You should consult a lawyer experienced in brain injury claims. Written by Janice and George Mucalov, LL.B.s with contribution by STANLEY COPE. Dash cams at top of motorist gift lists filled with techno gadgets Santa will doubtless be dashing about delivering dash cams by the dozen, as they are top of many gift wish lists this year. Most people see the onboard cameras, which continuously record the driver’s view of the road through the windshield, as a great way of gathering video evidence in the event of a collision. Internet websites featuring often hair-raising video of dramatic crashes are drawing viewers in their millions. Thousands of eyewitness videos featuring car crashes, narrow escapes, and even staged crashes designed to commit insurance fraud have been uploaded to YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and dash cam dedicated websites. The cheapest units start from as little as $30 but as is always the case with technology, you only get what you pay for. Testing by the Driveway team shows that for less than $100, you can get a serviceable camera for your car. However, if you want to install a more sophisticated version that records such information as date/time, speed, G-forces and location then get ready to spend more than $200. Yours truly bought a BlackVue DR3500-Full HD system, which retails for more than $400. I would recommend it for commercial fleets and people like me who want to record trips for

HEIN
Florence Exilda (nee Chartrand) July 04, 1928 - December 12, 2015 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mom Florence. She was a wife, mother, grandma, sister and friend. She was predeceased by her parents, Solomon and Esther, sisters Lizzy, Eva, Mary, Bertha, Annie, Dorothy and Frances as well as two brothers, Harvey and Frank. She leaves behind her husband Edwin, son Jeffrey (Hanna), daughter Allison (Max), and her grandchildren Nicole, Shantelle, Connor and Carson. There are also numerous nieces and nephews. Florence spent her early years at the family home in Camperville, Manitoba. She moved to Vancouver in 1954, where she met her husband of 59 years, Edwin. They relocated to Richmond, White Rock and finally settled in Abbotsford in 1975. She “lived” until she died and was fortunate to be in her own home still caring for herself and Edwin. At the age of 87 she passed away peacefully in the Abbotsford Regional Hospital. She will be greatly missed. We are grateful for the staff in the Emergency Department and on the ACE unit for their care and kindness shown to our mom and her family. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice. A remembrance was held Thursday, December 17, 2015 at 11am at Peace Lutheran Church, 2029 Ware Street, Abbotsford, B.C.
