Northern Health Connections bus holiday schedule

Northern Health’s Connections program, providing transportation for clients travelling to non-emergent health services outside their home communities, will run its annual modified schedule over the holiday season. The Northern Health Connections

program runs on a modified schedule during the holidays due to a reduction in demand and to perform necessary maintenance on the buses. As of Dec. 17 the Northern Health Connections buses will begin their last routes for 2015.

All routes will be operational as of Jan. 7, 2016. The call centre will close at noon on Thursday, Dec. 24 and reopen on Monday Dec. 28; and then will be closed Jan. 1, 2016 and reopen on Jan. 2, 2016. Last routes for The Gold Pan City for

2015 are: Quesnel to Prince George – Dec. 22, 2015 Regular schedule begins: Jan. 6, 2016 Prince George to Quesnel – Jan. 5, 2016 Full details on the Northern Health Connections holiday schedule and more information on the

CRD chair reflects on 2015

The following is the year-end address delivered by Cairboo Regional District Chair Al Richmond. “Today, I have the distinct pleasure of reviewing the Cariboo Regional District’s key accomplishments and successes for 2015. Looking back over the past year, our region can be proud of its achievements. The CRD experienced many successes in 2015. The year started with three subregional budget consultation meetings taking place in 100 Mile House, Quesnel and Williams Lake. During these meetings we presented the proposed 2015 budget to our residents to seek feedback from them before adopting the budget at the end of March. “In February, the North Cariboo Joint Planning Committee unanimously endorsed a resolution to proceed with the Arena Replacement Project on the site of the former Cariboo Regional District Library, as proposed during the public consultation process prior to the referendum in June 2014. Construction of the new West Fraser Centre is scheduled to commence in the early spring of 2016. “On the heels of the Cariboo Regional District’s successful display during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, the Regional District once again partnered with our member municipalities, the Northern Shuswap Tribal Council, the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism Association and Pioneer Log Homes of B.C. Timber Kings to promote the Cariboo Chilcotin to the nation and the world at the 2015 Canada Winter Games. The display, which was located within the Northern B.C. Tourism pavilion, featured an

indoor display area including a photo booth for visitors to have their picture taken with a beautiful Cariboo Chilcotin backdrop and some fun props such as gold pans, cowboy hats, fishing gear and more items which can be found in and around our region. Over 25,000 visitors passed through the trademark Cariboo Chilcotin entranceway during the two weeks of the Games. “Following a yes vote for the Sam Ketcham Pool Referendum which was held in November, the newly formed working group which was formed from elected officials and staff of the Cariboo Regional District and the City of Williams Lake got to work on the major renovations project. The Project Management firm was selected in March. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2016 with and estimated completed in the fall of 2017. “In May of 2015, the CRD attended the North Central Local Government Association Conference which was held in Prince George. Delegates and their partners were able to attend some great workshops, business sessions and of course some spectacular entertainment and social events. I would also like to take this opportunity to again thank the many volunteers who dedicated their time and efforts to put on this conference. The hospitality which was offered to delegates and their partners was second to none. “In June, the CRD Board of Directors and staff travelled to Esler Sports Fields for the first of two 2015 Board on the Road events. The traditional Board on the Road BBQ was put on in support of the Williams

Lake Youth Soccer Association to raise funds for its teams representing our region at tournaments across the province. “In July, our Emergency Operations Centre was opened again, this year as a result of the Puntzi Lake Interface Wildfire. The EOC provided assistance to residents and co-ordinated efforts to ensure public safety. Our EOC web site and Facebook page became the go-to place for news media, agencies, and the public for up to date information during the fire season. Our staff and many volunteers worked tirelessly side by side to meet the needs of the people directly affected by the fires, evacuations and alerts for the duration of the Puntzi Lake fire. We worked closely with our friends from the Redstone Indian Band under the leadership of their Chief, Percy Guichon. Chief Percy’s staff worked closely with CRD Emergency Operations staff to help keep local residents up to date on the fire activity and evacuation

orders, provided a meeting spot for fire information meetings and helped in any way possible. We thank Chief Percy and his staff for their support and teamwork during this event. We are also most appreciative to Emergency Management B.C. for continuing to support our staff during emergencies. As with the Mount Polley Tailing Pond Breach of 2014 and the firestorms of 2010, our staff is to be commended for their dedication to helping those in need and finding solutions to daily challenges as they presented themselves. “Throughout 2015, the CRD continued to monitor the Mount Polley situation and attended many sessions discussing the temporary discharge permits. The CRD met with Chief Donna Dixon of the Soda Creek First Nation to hear the Bands concerns about the discharge permits and continue to meet with Chief Anne Louie of the Williams Lake Indian Band to discover ways in which we can all collectively

move forward in the aftermath of Mount Polley. Mount Polley will be a major project that we will continue to work on and monitor with all of our First Nations and Non First Nations communities to create a better tomorrow for all residents. “On August 29, the Cariboo Regional District’s Chief Election Officer declared the results as official for the South Cariboo Highway Rescue and the Deka Lake Fire Service expansion referendums. Just under 700 south Cariboo residents participated in the two referendums through advance polls, mail ballots and general voting day. The second Board on the Road event took place from Sept. 10 – 11. The first day featured a Community to Community forum with the Canim Lake Indian Band. This event was the first step in strengthening our relationship, exploring shared services and developing an MOU with the Canim Lake First Nation. See PAGE A7

Elizabeth Louise Nelson (nee) Merry, (Betty, Sis) Betty was born January 17, 1922 in New Denver and died December 9, 2015. She is survived by her sons Doug (Holly) of Quesnel, Blair of Trail, Stuart (Diana) of Silverton, daughters Cindy (Walt) of Quesnel, Penny (Mike) of Nanaimo, 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her one remaining sibling, Mildred (Millie) Spence of Minto House in Nakusp. Millie will be turning 100 years young in March. Betty was born in New Denver and raised in Annabelle. After she became a registered nurse at St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in 1942. After graduation she nursed in Penticton then returned to Slocan and worked in the Japanese hospital. She met and married Gord Nelson in 1948. They spent the rest of their lives in Silverton raising their 5 children. Betty was a true care giver and loved helping those in need. She was a shy, quiet lady who often kept to herself (in contrast to husband Gord). She was a good friend to those special few. She could be counted on to help and support her community when asked. She loved cross country skiing with her close friends and could throw a good lead curling rock. She loved the beach in the summer and enjoyed talking with her grandchildren of her days of swimming across Slocan Lake. She would recite her old time songs and rhymes which the older grandkids still remember today. Betty was well known for her homemade bread, biscuits and baked beans. We will miss Mom. Knowing she is now at peace with Dad makes our loss a little easier. Our sincere thanks and appreciation go to the staff at Minto House for all the loving care given to our Mom. There will not be a memorial service. Donations may be made to the B.C. Children’s Hospital in her memory. Mom and Dad were lifelong supporters of this institution. www.bcchildrens.ca

Priorities Gee, what a surprise that a former deputy minister recommends that they get rid of the pesky whistle-blower and move all the jobs under the government muzzle. It’s really tough not to be cynical about the goings-on at the Ministry of Children and Family Development. Everyone seems to agree that it is drastically understaffed and underfunded. How did we get to this state of emergency, without someone stopping the avalanche along the way? It took the B.C. government turning a blind eye and a deaf ear deliberately and repeatedly to the needs of the young people in care and the social workers who try to do a halfway decent job of looking out for them, though their caseloads make it all but impossible. While it’s nice that Children and Family Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux has said that her government does plan to increase resources for the ministry, we doubt it will be the $100 million Representative for Children and Youth Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond says is needed to keep up with the caseload. One can only imagine how much would ever get out to the public should Bob Plecas, that former deputy minister, have the recommendations in his recent report adopted. Plecas is a highly respected, long serving, former civil servant, but perhaps it’s a problem that he’s too familiar with the backrooms and closed-door meetings of the legislature. His suggestions would lead to the public being granted somewhere between scant and no information. His suggestion that an internal “contrarian” and a ministry spokesperson could do the same job that Turpel-Lafond is doing is dangerous nonsense that will see the responsibility for terrible mistakes buried along with the bodies. The idea that an all-party committee of MLAs could be briefed on child death and serious injury cases and that opposition MLAs would then take up the oversight and criticism role is a total non-starter. Let’s be honest here, when have the majority Liberals ever taken anything the minority opposition MLAs have to say seriously, let alone seriously enough to make changes? While some of these recommendations may be good for the ruling government, we don’t think they’re good news for those who are caught in this broken system. And they’re the ones who are most important, aren’t they? –BP

Happy hump day greetings A

bout 25 years ago when I was working in the classified advertising department of a large Vancouver newspaper company, my beautiful friend walked in with a giant box of Twizzlers. It was a grim day, rainy and cold outside, cranky and glum inside. There were about 30 of us in the phone room and it was a slow afternoon for calls, which got me clock watching. As I counted down the time to my next coffee break, in walked Sharon Hicks, like a ray of sunshine through the fog. “Happy hump day!” she exclaimed with her megawatt smile. Happy what? I thought to myself. Sharon was squeaky clean and never said anything the least bit offside or risqué that I’d ever heard, so I was surprised. “A little something to help us get over this week’s hump,” she said handing out the strawberry licorice to her delighted co-workers. Okay, so that made more sense. She was referring to

On A Brighter Note it being Wednesday and getting over that hump in the middle of the week, bringing us that much closer to the weekend. I’d never heard that expression before, but I liked it. I actually thought she made it up. As she walked around the office full of women, they suddenly seemed like girls. I marvelled at how easy and inexpensive that was for her to break up the monotony and spread cheer among us grumps who had been experiencing some extra stress and tension within the department. For the rest of the day everyone chattered between calls with spirits brightened from our cheery messenger. For some reason that memory has always stuck

stomped away muttering obsenities. I wondered if I should follow her and try to make it clear no disrepect was intended, but I didn’t. A man in close proximity who’d seen and heard the whole thing started to laugh. “Don’t worry,” he said. “I think she just comes here to mess with people. I’ve seen her do that before.” As our shock wore off, we laughed as well. I purposely visited the candy aisle after that, determined to take Twizzlers home to the kids and tell them about the interesting encounter, and the decades old recollection I’d never shared. I suspect my happy hump days won’t just have memories of Sharon and Twizzlers anymore. They’ll also include the senior with the unexpected trucker talk. Either way, they both make me smile. with me. Most Wednesdays since then I’ve thought about Sharon and her sweet offering - it’s a gift I’ll never forget. I’ve greeted people with “Happy Humpday” ever since and I’ve noticed it’s become more well known than it used to be. The majority of people seem to understand it’s midweek meaning now, and people still giggle at it. Not everyone finds it funny though. Last week an elderly lady chastised a bubbly clerk I like for saying it to me in the grocery store. “Excuse me?” she asked angrily. “That is highly inappropriate!” Jumping to the employees’s defence I tried to explain it’s reference to Wednesdays but she cut me off and told me to mind my own fuzzy business. Except the word she used wasn’t fuzzy. The younger woman and I looked at each other with stunned expresions, as though we were little kids being scolded by a scary stranger. We fell silent as she

Slow down, look up and be blessed

I would like to share one of my favourite Christmas scriptures with you. It is found in Matthew 2:9-12 And having heard the king, they went their way; and lo, the star, which Rawlin Falk they had seen in the east, Maple Park Alliance Church went on before them, until it came and stood over where the Child was. And when they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And they came into the house and saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell down and worshiped Him; and opening their treasures they presented to Him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh. And having been warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their own country by another way. This story has so many wonderful Christmas sentiments. There’s the miracle of the star speaking of the guidance of God for those looking for it. Then there’s joy at finding the Saviour. Of course there’s a baby Jesus and then abandoned, heart-felt worship. Presents were a part of the first Noel and then dreams that directed the group on their way. We pray that all these elements would be part of your Christmas season this year. May God help light the way in an increasingly dark time. May the Saviour become more real in your life as you worship Him. May you find pleasure in giving and receiving as you give as unto the Lord. ne of the most striking features of the Christmas story is the almost universal presence of angels. They are everywhere. Almost every major character in the Christmas story has an encounter with an angel: Joseph, Zechariah, Mary, the shepherds . . . these supernatural figures announce the coming of the promised king, even though this king would be born into poverty. In many ways, the presence of these heavenly angels contrast the lowliness of the way in which Jesus enters the world. Our culture, however, has skewed our image of angels. The angels we see in popular culture – and even in ancient Christian art and modern Christian publications – look like pudgy cupids, cute babies or beautiful young girls clothed in flowing gowns, their faces serene and innocent.

B.C. joins clean vehicle club in Paris TOM FLETCHER Black Press With 2,000 electric vehicles and charging stations in place and a program to keep subsidizing their purchase and use, B.C. has joined an elite club of countries and U.S. states. Capping her second week at the United Nations climate change conference in Paris, Environment Minister Mary Polak announced Thursday that B.C. has joined the International Zero-Emission Vehicle Alliance. The alliance hopes to reduce vehicle emissions 40 per cent by 2050, promoting use of battery-electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Its members include Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, the U.K., California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Quebec. In 2011, B.C. replaced its earlier $2,000 subsidy for hybrid cars with a clean energy vehicle program that pays between $2,500 and $5,000 in point-ofsale rebates for new battery electric, plugin hybrid, fuel cell or natural gas vehicles. It also offered a $500 subsidy for installing a dedicated vehicle charging station at home through LiveSmart BC, a program that ended in 2014. With sufficient home service, modern electric cars can be plugged into a standard outlet. Natural gas power has mainly been limited to short-haul truck fleets based around a central fuelling station. B.C. ran pilot projects with hydrogen fuelcell transit buses in Victoria and Whistler, but they were wound up after the 2010 Olympics. Energy Minister Bill Bennett acknowledged that electric vehicles are

mainly confined to urban areas in the Lower Mainland and southern Vancouver

Island. Asked how the program appears from rural areas,

where taxpayers with muddy pickups subsidize sleek electric cars driven

by wealthy West Coasters, Bennett said the program is funded out of natural gas

royalties, not general taxation. He noted that B.C. is better suited to

electric vehicles than many places that burn coal or natural gas to generate electricity.

Santa receives the best gift ever from Mrs. Claus EMILY NELSON Grade 7 – Voyageur It was Christmas Eve and Santa was taking his 2 – 3 hour nap. Mrs. Claus had a little job for two of Santa’s elves to do. She called Mace and Dant to the sleigh room. The sleigh room was where Santa’s sleighs from past years are kept. “Can we help you, Mrs. Claus?” Dant asked as he and Mace walked in. “Yes, I have a mission for you tow,” replied Mrs. Claus. “Really?” Mac said getting excited. “I would love for you two to use last year’s sleigh and go to the South Pole.” “Why?” Dant asked. “I need you to find a baby penguin for Santa. He’s lost

and lonely with no one to care for him and I want him to come up here and experience magic with us.” “Okay” the elves chorused together.They ran over to last year’s sleigh and prepared it. They hooked up Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen to the sleigh. Rudolph was sad that he couldn’t go but to make it up to him the elves gave him two helpings of oats. Off they left for the South Pole. They used the super boosters for speed and made it to the Pole by 2:30. Then they walked to Penguinville which was the most popular place to find penguins. They found one little baby penguin all alone. “Do you have parents?” Dant asked. The penguin shook his

head from side to side. “This is the one?” asked Mace. “I guess it is. Would you like to be Santa’s pet?” asked Dant. “But aren’t the reindeer Santa’s pets?” Mace asked. “Santa has lots of room for new pets Mace. This new penguin will get along so well with Ices the snow dog.” “Oh, than ya. What do you say little buddy?” The penguin shook his head excitedly up and down. “Then let’s fly home.” Mace said, getting extremely giddy. “They all ran to the sleigh…well except for the penguin…he waddled. They climbed into the sleigh and got home just in time. Mrs. Claus quickly put

the penguin in the box with holes in it, put a bow on top and wrote: To Santa, Love Mrs. Claus. Quietly putting it on Sant’as desk they all waited for 3 p.m. to strike so Santa could greet the new member of the household – tick tick tick – the clock finally struck three. Santa woke up and opened the present. Reaching slowly into the box Santa gently pulled out the baby penguin and gave him a big cuddle. “Thanks for the gift Mrs. Claus, I really appreciate it when you give me my present on Christmas Eve. It helps me with the deliveries knowing that I get to see all the elves and you open the presents when I get back at dawn on Christmas Day. “Now let’s get this show on the road.”www.cariboord.bc.ca

Wayne said, “we need lights.” They looked around and saw a house with Christmas lights on it. Wayne said “grab some lights.” Lenny grabbed all of the lights. Wayne said, “I said grab some lights, but good

job.” They nailed the lights to the roof. Lenny slipped because it was icy. They saw Santa coming and Lenny shot a grapple hook to the other side on the ground to Wayne. Wayne picked it up and Santa lowered the sled to the roof. The sleigh’s skis were slipping. It crashed into the hook but the sleigh hit the hook but they didn’t fall. Santa delivered the presents safely.

FRONT STREET BARBER & STYLING ALEENA KLOTZ Grade 4 - Ecole Baker This is a story about my first Christmas in Minecraft. It happened on the first snowfall of the season. I started decorating my tree. The tree was small and wide but the perfect fit in my Minecraft living room. I asked Santa for a pet dragon and I hoped it would fit under the tree. I was late getting my Christmas decorations up but I was determined to get it done before Santa Arrived. Getting the house decorated was a huge job but I finished on time. Milk and cookies were put on the table for Santa and carrots for the reindeer. I slept soundly not hearing Santa enter the room. I woke in the morning going to look under the tree. There was a dragon egg with a pink bow and had my name written all over it. Soon the egg hatched and I called her Angel. This was the best Christmas ever.

Ingredients for a perfect Christmas JACOB WIGHT Grade 6 – Riverview Here are the ingredients for a perfect Christmas: - one bucket of love - two cups of family - one pinch of tree - three tablespoons of light - one teaspoon of turkey - two sprinkles of decorations - three dashes of faith - one gallon of laughter Pour one bucket of love into a bowl and then add two cups of family and stir it together. Add three tablespoons of light and put it in the oven for five minutes. After that’s done lay it on the cutting board and sprinkle on some decorations. Flip it over and sprinkle some more decorations on and let it sit for an hour. Add one pinch of tree, combined with three dashes of faith and one gallon of laughter. That is all the stuff you need for a perfect Christmas.

I walked over to her and tapped her tail. She jumped and ran out of my room. “HaHa.” Just then I noticed the time, it was 8:27. “Man is it ever early.” I said to myself as I walked out of my room and stopped for a second. I picked up a smell – cookies! “I think it’s a little too early for cookies, mum,” I said to her. When she turned her back BAM I got a cookie and ran back to my room. I got the chocolate out of my calendar. Pretty soon I went for a nap. I woke up at 12:34.

I stayed up for a while and then I went to sleep it was just too hard to stay up. (How kitty sees it) Finally everyone’s asleep. I sat on the living room chair and THUMP! I jumped up and hissed. A big fat guy fell down the chimney. He placed colourful boxes under the tree. He gave me six cat treats. Then he ate the cookies and drank the milk. Man I wanted to drink that. Then he flew up the chimney. I rushed to the window, the fat guy was in a box with dog-like things with sticks on their heads. “Man what a weird day!” I put my paws on my mouth. with my dad this is what I would do. On Christmas morning I would wake up my brother and run into my parents room and jump on them to wake them up. Then, I would have a baconeating contest, we would open presents and my dad would be super jealous if I got something like a laptop. The best Christmas ever when my black and white retriever was under the tree IVORY SHELMERDINE Grade 6 – Riverview “Oh my gosh!” I said as I looked at my living room. I saw a box moving around. My dad yelled at me to get in my room. I walked to my bedroom and waited. I heard low voices; I couldn’t make out the words. I fiddled with my hair and then I put a golden silk bow to match the messy bun in my hair. Then I heard a box being tapped. I then heard my dad holler, “ok sweetie come out and open your presents.” I ran out excited as I had even been. I first opened my stocking, which had a lot of hair accessories and rings. I finished opening all my presents

then my dad pulled out a box that said, “for my sweet little angel.” I opened the box slowly and then felt rattling. I closed my eyes and gasped, “This is the best thing ever.” A black and white retriever! Its eyes were like sapphires and his tongue was like silk touching my skin. His nose was rough and its eyes gleamed in the sunlight. Its fur was like a new kitten. I had tears coming to my eyes and said this is the best thing ever! I set him down and he dashed around the house. When he ran his floppy ears flew in the wind like a horse’s mane. When he got tired he lay on my lap and took a nap. I stroked his silky fur and gave him a kiss goodnight and one last pet before letting him nap.

We just finished decorating our Christimas tree with colourful balls and a mini Santa Claus, when all of a sudden we heard a loud squeak. A huge brown squirrel with a lightning shaped tail ran around and around the tree like a typhoon. It was trying to eat the peanuts we strung around the tree. We didn’t want to touch the squirrel because its teeth were full of germs and we didn’t want to get rabies. It’s good thing Santa Claus had not come yet because the squirrel would have ripped the presents with its sharp teeth. Luckily, my mom was sleeping because she is scared of squirrels. I had an idea to open the door and let the squirrel run wild outside.

It worked and the squirrel ran out and I closed the door tightly. The Christmas tree was ok except for the peanuts. Lot of peanuts had been opened and eaten. My mom woke up and said “what did I miss?” I then said a squirrel came in and ate all the peanuts. “A squirrel?” mom exclaimed. Nice one kiddo,” Dad frowned. My mom was terrified and flopped on the couch. When I looked out the window I saw the same squirrel struggling to get in. “Oh no!”

ALICIA BALWIN Grade 6 – Ecole Baker

This was the Christmas that was so cold that you could not go outside. The wind went right through your body, no matter how many layers of clothes you had on. I had asked for a Bart the Cowboy toy, it was so cool that you could make him do a backflip, he also had a horse that was his best friend and they did everything together. The horse’s name was Troy. I had dreamed of having this toy for months and could hardly wait for Christmas day to arrive. I had made sure there were cookies and milk out for Santa that

night and carrots for the reindeer. Mom kept saying not to be disappointed if I didn’t get my wish for Christmas. On Christmas morning I woke up early to go downstairs to open presents but I didn’t find the one that I had waited for, for so long. It wasn’t under the tree as I had wished for. Mom had said not to be disappointed if I didn’t get my wish but it was darn hard not to cry. Mom gave me a big hug and told me that sometimes we don’t always get our wish but she loved me no matter what. I dried my tears and played with the toys that were under the tree and thought that maybe next Christmas would be better.

From Santa’s workshop to my chimney KAELEN SWANSON Grade 2 – Parkland One day I decided to try and go see Santa, so I set off to go see him. I knew he lived at the North Pole. I then saw a sign which said Santa’s Workshop ahead. I ran towards it but there seemed to be a force field. Then I saw a switch and pulled it and the force field switched off. I went by the sign and snuck up to his shop and saw him working on a toy. Then I realized it was my toy he was working on. I ran down to see him and I ran down yelling Santa! He looked at me and I told him that we should make a present for my parents and Santa agreed. I told him my mom and dad wanted a coffee maker and Santa said sure. Santa’s elves made a coffee maker and

he said we have to go and that I could ride on his sleigh. I asked him if I could sit next to him and he said yes. I got to see the whole world. Suddenly, we went

straight down and I saw my house. I then opened the door and Santa went down the chimney. I then said good night to Santa and went to bed.

Happy Holidays

I awake early to an amazing heart warming smell. I drifted downstairs and looked at the tree with all of the lights lit up with the bulbs all different colours shinning in the early morning sun. All the presents were wrapped and shinning brightly. “What is that heavenly aroma coming from the kitchen?” In the kitchen I saw my nana and she said “good morning Mary Jane, how are you this morning.” Nana loved it when I came down early to help her cook. I told nana I am very well and she told me to go wash my hands, so I could help cook. I went and washed my hands and started to rip the bread so we could stuff the turkey. I put spices into the homemade stuffing and mixed it with my hands. Nana started to cook the yams and potatoes and mixed them together. Meanwhile, I was stuffing the turkey. When I had finished stuffing the turkey, nana put it in the oven. I then started to decorate the cake while nana cooked the veggies. First, I put on the fake candy cane Christmas tree and I put everything else on. Like the candy reindeer and marshmallow on top with cream cheese icing and mini wafer gifts too. As I looked out the window I noticed it was dark. “Wow, what time is it” nana said. I gasped in astonishment. Suddenly my cousin burst through the door and said “it’s dinner time.” Everyone ran downstairs, tumbling over each other. We then dished out and grabbed some of that golden turkey and it was the best dinner ever.

BRIANNA BLOIS Grade 3/4/5 - Barlow Creek One of my best Christmas memories is from when I lived in Fort St. John. My golden retriever puppy, Cloe, ate a white and red glass ornament and she started puking up blood. We took her to the vet and they did something to her. Three days later she came home and she slept with me that night. On Christmas day, she had to go to the vet for a checkup and the veterinarian replied she was fine. When we got home she raced to my other doug Missy and she snuggled up close to her like she hadn’t seen her for two years. We thought she was going to be a goner, but it was a Christmas miracle and she lived.

Santa is here we get presents” One was a dog. “We got a dog!” The kids were very happy and the other present was a cat. “We got a cat.” The dog and cat’s name’s were Sat and Fat. The kids loved their presents and played with their pets. One day the kids went for a walk with their pets and then went to bed when they came home. Once they got up the next day they realized the dog and cat were gone. They looked but could not find them, but at last after looking for their pets they finally found them. They then took the pets for a walk in the park and played and after they got home they said good night.

Christmas memories MATTHEW REIMER Grade 3/4/5 - Barlow Creek I wish my mom could spend Christmas with me instead of working at a ranch all day. That would make me very happy. One year my dad ran into a snowman, and he broke the sled. I laughed at him. Then last year I rode my bike down a snowy hill, my front tire dug in and I face planted. I was not hurt when I face planted on the ice. My dad got to laugh at me, like I laughed at him. Then we jumped off our roof, I cannon-galled off the roof and made a big poof. We laughed hard.

I live in a bag with many other balls of beautiful colored wool. I’ve been here for a long, long time. One day I feel my bag being pulled out of the closet. I’m so excited because I can finally see a face looking down at me. The Gramma smiles as she squeezes my

softness and I know she loves my beautiful purple color. She says to me, “I know just what Caden will like.” So I spend the next few months being held by soft quick hands as she mixes me with many other colors to make a blanket. I feel myself being folded carefully and put into a Christmas bag with a beautiful bow then put under the Christmas tree.

It is Christmas morning and I wait anxiously for Caden’s excited hands. Finally, I am pulled close to his face and snuggled. I know Caden loves me as he smiles and laughs at my beautiful rainbow colors, I even smell like Gramma which he loves best of all. I now live on Caden’s bed where I am snuggled every night.

The special Christmas visitor AUDREY RAUSE Grade 6– Riverview Most people think that Christmas is about Santa or giving and receiving gifts, but I have a different story. It all started on Christmas Eve, as we started to decorate the tree. A homeless man with a twinkle in his eye an a big brown beard came knocking on the door. “Can a poor man have a place to lay his head,” he asked in a shaky voice. Of course mom replied, we have a guest bedroom upstairs. I’ll give you a tour after we decorate the tree. The poor man handed her a glass tree topper with Jesus on a cross. She replied saying how beautiful the ornament was and that she could not accept it because it was the man’s. The homeless man then responded saying this is why I am giving it to you. They then put the ornament on top of the tree. A day passes and Christmas came, as the family opened their presents and the homeless man started glowing and there he stood, in a white robe, scars on his hands and sandals on his feet with angels surrounding him. A voice said this is my son and then the man disappeared. My mom then exclaimed “It’s Jesus Christ!”

A Christmas gift HUNTER ANTONICK Grade 7 - Voyageur It was christmas morning and everybody was awake and everyone was opening presents and checking our stockings. Then I saw a small present. It was for me. It had red ribbons and blue wrapping paper, so I opened it slowly and it was a snow globe; the most precious, special snow globe of me and my family. I kept it hidden for years because it was a Christmas gift that was valuable.

Grade 6 – Ecole Baker “Ohh... WOW! 10 days left till Christmas” I just can’t wait. The snow is still falling; the beautiful cold season is here… “I wonder who my owner is gonna be?” When three days passed by I was told my new owner is getting me in the afternoon which made me feel fantastic. “I’ve waited for this moment! I’m a one-month old Shih Tzu with multi-coloured fur and brown eyes.” The day has passed by and I saw the owner. Her name was Rosy. When she looked at all the dogs she thought I was the cutest so I got picked and went home with her. I was so thrilled by seeing how much love I will get in this house. When she told me that I’m gonna be wrapped in a box, I was curious why. Then I found out that she is gonna give me to her daughter named Lily. That made me feel way better because I love getting petted by kids. When Lily arrived, she saw a present under the tree which said her name and she saw it moving. When she opened it, she found me and named me Princess. On Christmas Eve, I thought she left me and I ended up staying home with the cat because they thought I was in the car. I got frightened but the cat was friendly as well and we became friends. When Lily arrived, she started crying though I told her I wasn’t lonely because I had my best friend Cat, so don’t feel guilty. It wasn’t your fault. Next day, it was Christmas and we had this huge family dinner and I was just living this moment.
