Mentoring key to children’s formative years MOUSH SARA JOHN WEEKENDER REPORTER It was one morning while going through the local newspaper that Merle Hutchinson came across an advertisement appealing for mentors, which prompted him to visit Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) at Heartland Youth Centre (HYC) in Stettler. Since then, Hutchinson has never looked back. Matched with a mentee, Dominic, Hutchinson has been a big brother to Dominic for two years now. “It is important to give back to the community, and since HYC had been pivotal in helping me out with my grandson Dalton some 10 years back, I wanted to help out, be a guiding force for someone,” said Hutchinson. “I remember often my wife and I had no respite, trying to take care of Dalton as best as we could, but once we started dropping him off at HYC, things started looking better.” Hutchinson’s daughter had given him the responsibility of taking care of Dalton, who at the time had been struggling on various fronts. “He needed the presence of a male figure and someone to guide him, and in our formative years, we don’t realize how important that is,” said Hutchinson, who had had a few excellent male mentors in his life – his father, grandfather and great grandfather. “I am quite pleased to see the change that a little bit of my time over the past few months has done to Dominic,” added Hutchinson.

Meeting Dominic for two hours, every week, consistently has forged a relationship, which Dominic can rely on, and can often make the difference. “Merle helps me learn things, and also with my homework,” said Dominic. “He has taught me to use a voltmeter, you know batteries have voltage, its the device that helps measure that.” With a degree in technical and vocational education, Hutchinson had to study psychology and behavioural sciences, which has helped him in his relationship with Dalton, and now Dominic. “Dominic is good with his hands and since I have a background in automotive and am pretty old school in fixing things, I have been able to teach him some of those,” said Hutchinson. “In today’s world of video games and technology, we are required to give this generation a glimpse into how things were done earlier, and that has been my objective with Dominic.” Although his favourite time is playing air hickey with his mentor, Dominic enjoys working in electronic projects. “We built a robot together, and there was this one time, I think last summer when we started a program to fix bikes,” said Dominic. “We were trying to raise some money for HYC.” His summer was spent exploring more electrical projects that Merle had taught him, besides watching his favourite show, StarWars. “I also like watching documentaries on science fiction, planets, telescopes, how things work,” continued Dominic. On why he wants to be an

have a responsibility towards society and therefore I encourage more people to become mentors, and especially because BBBS is so thorough in what they do. The application process might seem detailed, but once you get into it, its easy.” Holding this together, behind the scene is the mentoring coordinator Christel Shuckburgh, who says one of the most rewarding moments of her job is when a match between a mentor and mentee is made and the relationship grows. “Seeing a child grow into a better version of themselves be-

cause they are learning something new and exciting from a person who thinks they are so special and making them into confident kids,” said Shuckburgh. Over the past three years she has been at BBBS, Shuckburgh has had the responsibility of recruiting and matching. “As a mentoring coordinator I recruit, intake and maintain the volunteers for BBBS, and I also do the intake for families that will utilize BBBS and then make a meaningful match that is beneficial to both the mentor and the child,” said Shuckburgh. continued on page 5

A good winter project for farm and business families With the crop in the bins, fall work completed and the fall run of cattle leveling off, this winter might be the time to start the conversation with your family about sale or succession planning. This is something that is applicable to both farm and small business families. Many of our farm and small business owners are getting up in years, so talking about these issues with family members is a good place to start. As a British farm boy myself who spent my first 27 years working with farm families, including eight years as a partner in a farm equipment dealership, I like to think that I have a deep understand of farming. I have touched on the urgent need to plan ahead in several articles over the years. It’s too late if time

runs out due to sickness, disability or premature death. It takes time for the ownership generation to acknowledge the need to start into the planning process, then it takes time to develop and then implement a plan. Most of us are guilty of procrastinating on issues that require talking to family members about money, plus many are reluctant to give up control of something they spent a lifetime building. Another factor is fear of change, something my farmer fa-

ther-in-law summed up well when he said, “There’s only one difference between a rut and a grave; a grave has ends.” It’s common for many of us to get into a rut in life. There are plenty of examples of the issues that arise when farm and small business families delay starting some level of succession planning, whether for transition to the next generation or sale to a third party. Today, with so much of a family’s net worth tied up in land or business assets, just the potential tax liability should be enough to shock people into action. Considering that some farmland in our area is selling for $4,000 or more an acre, there’s often very significant embedded capital gains and a big tax liability on sale or rollover that can be reduced or eliminated with proper planning. The tax-free

rollover provisions for farm and small business owner families, like all things that CRA allows, comes with some very specific rules and requirements in order to qualify. If given sufficient lead time, a financial advisor working as a team with accountants, lawyers, tax specialists and other professionals, can develop options tailored to a family’s specific needs. This process seems like the old saying “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” And one might add, over a long period of time. It all starts with a thorough review of a host of financial information, often some tough discussions as to what each family member’s hopes and dreams are, then developing a custom process to start implementing your plan. It’s often too late once the farm or business sale has happened and the machinery and other assets are sold. It all starts with a visit with a trusted financial advisor for a review, who can help kick-start and quarterback the process with other professionals to develop the right plan for your family.

THE WEEKENDER 3

Half of Canadian parents willing to postpone retirement to support adult children financially - One third of parents with children aged 18-34 would save less for retirement than planned to support their children - Forty-one per cent are concerned their adult children have or will have financial problems caused by debt - Half said their own parents provided them with little or no financial support when they were young adults themselves MARKETWIRED BMO We a l t h Management released a report titled “The Family Bank - a source of comfort for everyone,” which examines the financial support that Canadian parents provide their children aged 18-34 and how this support is impacting their own financial well-being. The report also compares the financial support parents received when they were young adults themselves with the support today’s young adults currently receive. According to the report, Canadian parents with children aged 18-34 are willing to make the fol-

lowing sacrifices in order to provide financial support for them, if required: • Retire later than planned (50 per cent) • Save less for retirement (33 per cent) • Have a less comfortable retirement (32 per cent) • Take on debt (22 per cent) • Withdraw from their retirement savings (19 per cent) The willingness of Canadian parents to make these sacrifices reflects the anxiety they have about their adult children’s future well-being. They are most concerned that their children may have: • Financial problems

caused by debt (41 per cent) • Difficulties achieving financial independence (34 per cent) • Insufficient or lack of employment (31 per cent) “It’s no surprise that so many parents want to ensure their children succeed and live comfortably in adulthood,” said Chris Buttigieg, Senior Manager, Wealth Planning Strategy, BMO Wealth Management. “However, when parents make their adult children’s needs a priority, it may have a significant impact on their own financial situation and plans for the future, including retirement. A financial pro-

fessional can help parents understand the long-term cost of the support they provide their children and ensure it is considered in a comprehensive financial plan.” New generation, new financial plan The report also found that almost half (48 per cent) of parents with children who are aged 18-34 said that they themselves as young adults received little to no financial support from their parents. This compares with just 20 per cent of adults aged 18-34 today who report the same thing. “Times have changed and the way each gen-

eration reaches financial independence differs. Parents should assume that they will be providing more help to their children than they received themselves when they were transitioning into adulthood,” said Mr. Buttigieg. “It’s important for parents and their adult children to have open communication with each other about their expectations for financial support to avoid any misunderstandings. These conversations will also give children an understanding of the limits to their parents’ resources so that they can account for this as they begin to take responsibility for

their own finances.” Important financial planning tips to parents Teach children about money from an early age: Children may rely on financial support from their parents simply because they have not learned enough about money. An understanding of personal finances involves learning how to budget and establishing saving and investing before spending habits. This will help children learn to live within their means, rather than looking for a financial top-up to support an extravagant lifestyle. continued on page 4

Half of Canadian parents willing to postpone retirement to support adult children financially continued from page 3

Sale starts Dec. 18/15

Invest in a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA): A TFSA can make savings more tax efficient and extend a parent’s ability to use their resources to meet financial goals. Although the amount that can be contributed annually to a TFSA is limited, income earned in the account is generally not subject to any Canadian

taxation. Consider income-splitting opportunities: Incomesplitting strategies can help to increase the benefit available for children and dependent parents. Through the use of a family trust or a carefully documented prescribed-rate loan strategy, the tax cost on income can be legitimately allocated to family members in a lower income tax bracket.

Leave a legacy of financial comfort: Parents can ensure that their wills provide for their children adequately. A joint insurance policy on both spouses that pays out a lump sum tax-free to the surviving spouse to supplement income or to support children who may be struggling financially is a good option. Mentoring key to children’s formative years continued from front page With a wait list of 10 boys, BBBS is looking into recruiting male mentors. “I would like men to feel more comfortable in the role of a mentor, we need male mentors badly, with 10 boys on the wait list,

and some waiting for more than two years to get a mentor,” said Shuckburgh. “My wish is that men would find it within themselves to step up and be what these boys need in such a formative part of their lives, a role model and friend.” According to Shuckburgh,

no professional expertise is needed to be a mentor. “When a match is made and mentors come on board with BBBS, you will get the necessary training, but most of all you just need to care and want to make someone’s life a little better,” concluded Shuckburgh.

A snazzy red sports car just wouldn’t do it. A torrid love affair was also out of the question, as was a wild roadtrip via convertible. No, when you reached That Certain Age, there was no crisis – just a dream that called to you, and you had to find it. Then, as Lauren Kessler describes in her new book “Raising the Barre,” you had to do a grande jeté into it.

TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER When her husband said he was taking a business trip to Paris and didn’t invite her along, Lauren Kessler decided that was okay. Instead, because three weeks solo was too delicious to waste, she devised a plan. Kessler boarded a plane, too, and flew criss-crosscountry to catch The Nutcracker in as many cities as she could. She’d loved that ballet since she was five years old; it made her want to take lessons then, and become a ballerina. She’d seen more than twenty productions of it, and she wanted to binge on more. But then the unexpected happened: two days after arriving home from her mission, Kessler claims that a voice “whispers in my ear: Dance The Nutcracker, it says…. Take a chance.” But even for a middle-aged woman in excellent physical shape, that was easier said than done. Kessler first had to decide why she felt a strong “restlessness” to dance a role in the nearly-century-old ballet. She hadn’t been at a barre since she was twelve years old. And then, “who would allow me to dance in The Nutcracker even if

I could?” But someone agreed to at least think about it, and Kessler had nine months to get herself in shape before official rehearsals – a sort of “prep for the prep for the real work.” She signed up for classes meant to get her physically ready; traveled to Utah for a fitness boot camp; and learned what to wear, where to stand, and how to dance again. And through it all, she says, “It occurs to me that I could fail at this. It also occurs to me that not trying would be the bigger failure.” Throughout this slice-oflife story, author Lauren Kessler makes it clear that she’s tackled other challenges so that she can write books about them. Even so, knowing that this was not just a lark, “Raising the Barre” is a nice surprise.

In taking readers through a grueling, painful trip that may (again: may) garner a spot in a ballet she adored, Kessler proves that ballet – and, really, seizing any dream worth having – isn’t as easy as it looks. You may even see yourself in what she endures: the doubts, aggravations, and triumphs, especially, but also in the journey itself. And for sure, you’ll laugh, too, because Kessler keeps readers on their toes with plenty of self-depreciating humor. You don’t need to be an aspiring ballerina to love this book. You don’t need a dream, either, but you’ll understand it better if you do. And, of course, because you do, “Raising the Barre” is a book to leap for. “Raising the Barre” by Lauren Kessler c.2015, Da Capo Press $24.99 / $31.50 Canada 254 pages

Holiday menu planning for first-time hosts Novice holiday hosts often have a lot on their plates. Whether hosting family or friends or a combination of both, first-time hosts typically want to impress their guests while ensuring they get enough to eat and have an enjoyable evening. Since dinner is such a big part of holiday gatherings, hosts often place extra emphasis on what to serve, and that can be tricky when this is the first time they are hosting. When planning the menu for your holiday soiree, consider the following tips. * Get a head count. Though other factors will influence what to serve, the size of your guest list may ultimately dictate what to serve. For example, a small gathering of four to five people will likely rule out turkey, as even a small turkey will prove too much effort and produce too much extra food. On the same note, a small dish like lasagna might not be doable for a larger crowd, as it will force you to prepare multiple entrees, which means more time in the kitchen juggling the various cooking duties and less time with your guests. Once you have confirmed just how many guests you will be hosting, you can then choose a main course that suits the size of your guest list. * Decide which type of party you want to host. The type of party you want to host also will influence what you serve. A formal gathering should include an appetizer, a main course and a dessert, including both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffees. A less formal gathering gives hosts more leeway. For example, whereas a formal gathering may include soup as an appetizer, hosting a less formal gathering allows hosts to put out some snacks or bread for guests to whet their appetites before everyone sits down for the meal. The more formal the gathering, the more formal the menu. Hosts of less formal gatherings may even want to host a

Upon being invited to a holiday dinner, some invitees may let hosts know if they have any food allergies or medical conditions that restrict which foods they can eat. Solicit such information from all of your guests, and do your best to cater to each of your guests’ needs. Some guests might be on a gluten-free diet while others may need to limit their sodium intake. You might not be able to meet everyone’s demands. Let guests know if they should bring an

appropriate snack if you cannot provide one for them. * Include traditional holiday fare. People have grown to expect certain things from holiday meals, be it sweet potatoes on Thanksgiving, brisket for Chanukah or holiday cookies or even eggnog at Christmas parties. When planning the menu, be sure to include at least one of these traditional items, even asking guests for suggestions. Such fare will give the party a genuine holiday feel, and guests will appreciate seeing some items on your dinner table they have enjoyed at their own holiday celebrations over the years. * Don’t overdo it. to ensure everyone gets enough to eat, so it’s easy to overdo things and prepare too much food. This can be expensive, and guests may feel obligated to overeat so hosts don’t have to discard any of the food they worked so hard to prepare. Though it might once have been a holiday tradition to overeat, many men and women now prefer moderation, and hosts should keep that in mind when preparing their holiday meals. Hosting a holiday dinner for the first time can be nerve-wracking. But there are a variety of steps first-timers can take when preparing their menus to come off looking like old pros.
