Ice climber notches golden repeat
Gord McArthur defends North American Championship title T R E VO R C R AW L E Y
When you’re on the top, everyone is gunning for you. However, Gord McArthur was able to brush off the competition and climb his way to a second consecutive title at the North American Championships last weekend in Bozeman. “It went really well,” McArthur said. “You have a different per-
spective when everybody from North America is gunning to beat you. All of the sudden, that kind of adds a bit more to your plate. “It’s not you just going to try to win, it’s you now trying to stay the winner, if that makes sense. “It definitely adds spice to the event.” The Bozeman Ice Festival doubles as both
McArthur working on climbing centre TRE VOR CR AWLEY
On Thursday, McArthur made it official. Arq Mountain Centre has become a reality and will likely be opening between April and June in 2016 next year. The Arq Mountain Centre, a longtime vision of McArthur and business partner Fraser Bowden, is currently under renovation inside a building in Cranbrook’s industrial park. “This has been on the go for quite a long time and we’ve finally come to a place where we’re ready to move forward. We have a building that we’re working with and we’re working with the architects right now to finalize the renovations inside,” McArthur said. “We have wall designs already done up, so we have 3D renderings of the building, which is great.” Though the vision is to have a climbing gym, McArthur says the centre will be so much more. “It’s multi-faceted. Obviously, the main aspect of the building is going to be the climbing—the gym—but we’re also going to have a huge emphasis on youth. By that I mean kids from two years old up to 10 years old,” he said. “So we’re going to have a huge dedicated area for that age range. “Beyond that, we’re going to have a fitness area, we’re going to have a studio for yoga or spin class or cross-fit stuff. We’re going to have a really focused social area, and of course, some retail space and food and beverage.” For more information on the facility, search for the Arq Mountain Centre on Facebook.
the North American Championship and a World Cup event on the UIAA circuit. There was a little bit of drama before the competition as a sudden windstorm blew over the climbing structure three weeks beforehand, which led to an initial cancellation of the event. “[It] basically destroyed the tower; the tower was huge, massive and they went super-big with it this year, and essentially the storm totally crushed it,” said McArthur. “…the organizers of the event and the town, they rallied and they rebuilt and although it wasn’t quite as big, they totally pulled it off.” Alongside McArthur
at the competition were fellow Cranbrook athletes and climbers— Noah Beek, Karlee Hall and Ineke Rhebergen. Beek placed third, Hall placed second and Rhebergen finished sixth in the North American Championship. “They did amazing, for them to work as hard as they—all three of them have worked really hard. They’ve been training for months now and to see them perform as well as they did, it was absolutely a treat to watch.

FOR THE TOWNSMAN
Cranbrook pianist Jani Parsons is returning home for a concert with violinist Timothy Steeves, set for Sunday, Dec. 20 at Knox Presbyterian Church. Parsons and Steeves both perform and record with the Chicagobased mixed-chamber ensemble Latitude 49. See more, Page 4.
It will be a white Christmas, with cooler weather sticking around for the holidays, according to weather experts. In terms of weather, Lisa Caldwell, Environment Canada meteorologist, said November was not truly a remarkable month. The mean temperature for that month was -2.4 degrees celsius, which is not far off the normal of -1.28 degrees celsius. “So slightly below normal,” she said. “It didn’t rank in really any rankings.” Precipitation for the month came out to 34.9 mm. Normal is 35.3 mm. “So almost bang on normal for precipitation,” she said.

Christmas in Cranbrook, 50 years ago
JANUS:
Then & Now
Jim Cameron
In
D e c e m b e r, half a century ago, Cranbrook was poised for a number of changes that would result by the early 1970s in a city that looks much more like it does today than that of days gone by. For the moment, however, the Cranbrook Mall had not yet dropped its fat foundation directly across Baker Street, rubbing out a city park in the process. The charming old Royal Bank had not yet been replaced by the new, the YMCA/Armoury still stood sentinel at the west end of Baker Street and the highway still came through the business district past a clock tower that was still attached to a Post Office. Crestbrook lumber mill and the old airport took up much of the area to the east side of what would soon become “The Strip,” and the St. Eugene Hospital was still the hub of medicine in the district. The population stood at around 7,000 and would continue to grow, forcing the city to expand its borders to the east and south in addition to the construction of apartment blocks throughout the residential area. The weather for the first half of December, 1965, was, on average, 1.3 degrees F. warmer during the day and 3.1 degrees F. cooler during the night than 2015. There was snow on the ground from a heavy snowfall in late November and there would be a great deal more snow arrive in late December — 28 inches of the wet and heavy stuff — cancelling flights, closing the sixteen month-old Skyway (Salmo-Cres-

Still, by 1965, many homes had televisions to help pass the long winter nights. TV shows premiering that year included Lost in Space, Hogan’s Heroes, Get Smart, I Dream of Jeannie, The Wild Wild West, Green Acres, I Spy, Days of Our Lives, F Troop and The FBI. Top music hits of December included: We Can Work it Out by the Beatles, Turn, Turn! Turn! Turn! by the Byrds, I Hear A Symphony by the Supremes, and Sounds of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel while the top box office releases were Thunderball and Dr. Zhivago, The final week of November saw the deaths of three people in three
separate automobile accidents, two from out of town and Gilbert “Gib” Parker of Cranbrook, age 18, who was a passenger in a two-car collision on the corner of 5th Avenue and 3rd Street, the first vehicle fatality in the city in four years. Safe-driving week began a few days afterwards. The Senior Citizens Club, boasting over 200 members, enjoyed their annual turkey banquet, the Courier stating that “members range from 92 and up and members as young as 12 years… with Mrs. McBurney the oldest at age 88.” The yearly municipal election, held on December 11, saw Mayor George Haddad (returned to a third term by acclamation) head up a city council consisting of
Ed Delamont, Eddie Leonard, J.S. “Bus” Johnston, Dave Bjerstedt, Don Sherling and Sam McLeary. 1,032 ballots were cast in the election, the 35.7 percent voting turnout among the lowest in the history of the city. Aside from the upcoming issues of a new hospital, airport, post office, industrial park (a priority for the Chamber of Commerce) and a downtown mall. A major concern was the local water supply. Chamber of Commerce civic affairs committee chairman Don DeBuysscher bluntly declared, “The water tastes like hell and smells worse.” Joe Sherbo, proprietor of the Stop & Go Inn, began importing “professional nightclub
acts” — singers, dancers, musicians, comedians — to perform in the restaurant, at times backed by local musicians Bud Dunlop, Stewart Taylor, Maurice Mackay and Doug Kerr as “The Blue Notes.” The annual Festival of Christmas Music took place in the Mt. Baker High School Gymnasium, now (more or less) the lobby of the Key City Theatre. Sponsored by the Cranbrook Teacher’s Association and Cranbrook Rotary, the festival featured over 500 voices from eleven local choirs. Boy Scouts sold Christmas trees for $1.00 each in the empty lot next to the old Post Office, the Scandinavian Sisters planned holiday dances and banquets at
the Blue Bird Inn, Swanson’s Men’s Wear actually sold wear for men while a Lyon’s Shoe Store advertisement read: Christmas Booty for All Ages. On the afternoon of Saturday, December 18, Santa Claus once again hitched a ride on the fire truck for a tour of the town. Sponsored by the Kinsmen Club he ended the journey at 1:30 p.m. outside Mt. Baker School where he handed out goodies to Cranbrook youngsters. There were a number of letters to Santa in the newspaper that year. One young lad wrote, “Dear Santa: I would like these toys: Trik Trak, 8 games in one, Martian Magic, Monopoly, Strategy, Football. I would also like Jet Putt Golf,
Rock’em Sock’em and Popeye’s Punch Me. My sister would like a long toque for skiing. My mother wants jewelry. My other brother wants some tie tacks. My dad wants a garage door shutter which is approximately $149.49. I don’t think he will get it. Good luck at Christmas. Please may I have these toys Yours Truly, Ron Webb.” Did Santa come through? Did young Ron receive all that he sought? Like much of Cranbrook’s history the answers are shrouded in the mists of time. But that was Cranbrook then and this is Cranbrook now and Janus sincerely wishes the best for you and yours over the holidays. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Cooler weather coming for Christmas Continued from page 1 “One thing about November, is if you remember at the end of the month we had that period of really cold and dry and sunny,” she said, adding it was a kind of pre-winter tem-
perature dip. The coldest temperature happened on Nov. 27, when it dropped to -22.2 degrees celsius. “Then December comes along, and the whole weather pattern
switched around once again, and we had two and a half weeks of mainly South Westerly (from the south west) flow off the Pacific — storm after storm — lots of warm air flooding into the Interi-
or and all the way across to the Alberta/B.C. Border.” Temperatures were relatively warm and there was some precipitation, she noted. Notably, on Dec. 9 there was 14 mm of rain
that fell. “Which is, in December, a lot of rain,” she said. For the last little while, the South Westerly flow has switched to a North Westerly flow.
“That is sort of a more normal direction for this time of the year and generally there’s a slow cool down and we’re seeing more snow,” she said. “Temperatures are cooler now and it’s looking like

Motorized/Non-Motorized
Marysville man fed up with quads on trails C AROLYN GR ANT
Motorized use of non-motorized trails has been an issue in British Columbia for many years, but Marysville resident Randy Wallach says that it is getting worse with every passing year. Wallach says he has major concerns with two lakes in the Matthew Creek area, Haystack and Cooper, that he has been walking to for years. But now, he says, quads have been over the trails again and again, widening them and causing damage. “These trails are posted as non-motorized,” he said. “I’ve been walking the one to
Cooper Lake since 1960 but I started to notice a lot more quads over this year. “I was up berry picking this summer and saw at least a dozen quads. I even saw a Jeep pulling a boat trailer.” Wallach says the quads ruin the trails, not to mention that the areas around Cooper and Haystack Lake are grizzly and caribou habitat. “Quads are bigger and heavier than they used to be and they disturb the ground. Haystack Lake is being totally run over. They ignore the signs, run them over or drive around them, even take them down.”
Wallach says there are thousands of kilometres of forest service roads, that quads can legally run on — he doesn’t see why they need to go where it is clearly posted for non-motorized traffic only. Since November of this year, off road vehicles like quads have to be licensed and carry insurance. Wallach hopes this may aid in reporting violators. There is a hotline you can call to report 1-844-676-8477. He has been in contact with the Ministry of Forests, who admit that it is a problem but have difficulty dealing with it.
“A wide variety of efforts have been made to prevent the escalating motorized use of the trail, including physical barriers, signage, surveillance cameras, compliance and enforcement patrols, and violation tickets,” wrote Garth Wiggill, Regional Executive Director, Kootenay Boundary Region to Wallach. “Physical barriers and signs prohibiting motorized use have been continually removed by non-compliant motorized users and re-established by the Ministry. Surveillance cameras and C&E patrols are only effective if violators can be caught in
the act of an infraction. This is a difficult task to accomplish in an area as vast and remote as B.C.’s backcountry, particularly due to existing limitations in available resources and capacity. “We will continue C&E actions with Natural Resources Officers and the Conservation Officer Service, as well as maintaining appropriate signage at the trailhead and along the trail route. “Members of the public can assist us in our efforts by reporting witnessed infractions to the NRO tip line.” Wiggill also said that reporting license plate numbers would help.
it’s going to stay that way, all the way through until the end of the year.” So that mean the snow that is on the ground won’t melt away, making this a white Christmas, she added. The weather systems from the north west originate in the Gulf of Alaska on the Pacific ocean and then travels down the coast, through the Central Interior and towards the south eastern portion of the province. “When they are coming in that direction, the systems are colder and they don’t have as much moisture,” she said. Caldwell noted the surface wind that we feel on the ground may not be from the north west. “Especially in Cranbrook, because of the way your valley is oriented — you’re either going to get a north wind or a south wind, you’re not really going to get any other direction,” she said. “So you may not see any wind.” Caldwell also provided an update on the big blob of warm water off the coast of B.C. that was causing the hot weather systems to stay over the region in the summer, and limiting the cold weather in the winter — it’s gone. “The Pacific blob broke up and it’s not a player anymore,” she said. “That was expected. It broke up because of all the systems that were moving in starting in September. Every Pacific system that came in stirred up the water.” She added it was all stirred up like when you’re stirring up a cup of coffee. On the other hand, El Niño is still a player. “It’s still a major oceanographic feature right along the equator,” she said, but noted it doesn’t usually take effect in Western Canada until later into the winter. They aren’t expecting to see effects of El Niño until later in January or February. “We are expecting things to become warmer than normal over the winter,” she said. “So far winter’s been pretty normal.”

Parsons, Steeves to perform Cranbrook concert

A
top flight pianist from Cranbrook is coming back to town for a special concert this weekend, along with her friend, bandmate and musical colleague. Jani Parsons, from Cranbrook, and violinist Timothy Steeves from Strathmore, are performing at Knox Presbyterian Church in Cranbrook on Sunday, Dec. 20. Showtime at 7:30 p.m. Parsons and Steeves are members the Chicago-based new music mixed-chamber group Latitude 49, but are looking forward to performing as a duo, taking advantage of their Christmas sojourn back home to perform a series of shows — in Lethbridge, Calgary, Cranbrook, and Strathmore. “It’s been something we’ve wanted to do for a very long time,” said Steeves. “We already play together in Latitude 49, but we’ve always wanted to do some duo projects by ourselves. This is an opportunity to explore these collaborative projects with each other, but also recon-
nect with our roots.” “We’re very excited to be in the Kootenays, presenting a beautiful concert of music that includes a mix of old and new,” Parsons said. “This is a very special concert experience for both of us, as we grew up in Western Canada.” The concert program includes Johannes Brahms sonata for violin and piano in G major, “a beautiful and deeply touching work that deals with aspects of love and loss,” Parsons said. “We will also be presenting a few flashy show pieces by famous violinist and composer Fritz Kreisler, as well as the Canadian premiere of a new work by the award-winning American composer, Christopher Ceronne, and short works by the French composers Gabriel Faure and Maurice Ravel.” Parsons and Steeves met at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbour. There, they founded a new music mixed-chamber group — Latitude 49. “It was a really powerful experience for us to meet,” Parsons said. “The group Latitude 49
has been really exciting for us, to see how it’s grown.” The name of the group, of course, is inspired by the 49th Parallel. At the time, when it formed, there were three Americans and three Canadians. Latitude 49, a mixed-chamber ensemble is made of wind players, string players, piano and percussion. “We focus primarily on commissioning, premiering and presenting works by living composers,” said Parsons. “It’s something that we’re really passionate about, supporting composers of our time, and getting these works heard.” Latitude 49 is in the process of finishing their first record, and their touring season has taken them around the U.S. Ohio and New York City coming up in the spring. Parsons is currently a freelance pianist and teacher in the Chicago area, and Steeves is completing his doctorate of musical arts at Rice University in Houston. But the group is in residence at the University of Illinois in

Jesus Came to Live … Abundantly
I
very much appreciate the columns by Anastasia Bartlett in the Townsman. Many of us don’t know enough about Eastern Orthodox traditions, and her writing about those ancient traditions is a very welcome thing. I am grateful for her insights and deep spirituality. However, I must disagree with a comment in a recent column. She was writing about the incarnation, which comes from two Latin words meaning “in the flesh”. It is the theological word for our Christmas celebrations when we celebrate God enfleshed in Jesus. In that column, she wrote, “Jesus was born to die.” I’ve seen and heard that kind of thinking many times. Last week, I saw a church sign online which read, “Christmas is the story of a baby born to die.” On another website, I saw an animated Christmas display which showed — yes, get this — Jesus carrying his cross and being flogged, presumably by a Roman soldier. And Merry Christmas to you too! What a macabre thing to do! I disagree. Jesus was not born to die. Jesus was born to live. Like any other baby, like any other human being, like any other of God’s creatures, Jesus was born to live. There are too many Christians who look at Jesus and see only the cross. As if the cross was the only thing of value about Jesus. As if God’s only purpose for Jesus was for him to die. As if the whole of Jesus’ work and ministry in the world counts for nothing. As if none of his teachings really mattered because the only thing that really matters is that “Jesus died for my sins.”
None of that is true, of course. Like any of us, Jesus’ life counts. How he lived, what he taught, how he showed compassion and grace in the world — all of these are equally important as his death. Jesus was born to live. The gospels testify to this over and over again. “Let us go on to the neighbouring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do.” (Mark 1: 38). “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10). In response to Pilate’s question about whether Jesus was a king, Rev. Yme Jesus responds, “For this I came into the world, to testify Woensdregt to the truth.” (John 18: 37). His whole life long, Jesus showed us how people can experience God’s love in this world. Jesus’ life was dedicated to embracing, healing, loving people and treating all of God’s people with grace and compassion. It makes me sad to think that anyone can look at the infant Jesus and see only his death. It makes me sad that anyone can read the radical story of a baby in a manger and think only of a cross. It makes me sad to imagine that for so many people, Christian faith is only about Jesus dying so that we can go to heaven. It makes me sad that anyone can reduce the mystery of incarnation to the tragedy of crucifixion. So let me repeat what I’ve said so often in these columns. It wasn’t Jesus’ death and crucifixion that set things right in the world. Rather, it was Jesus’ whole life that shows what a world set right might look like.
And Jesus showed us that abundant life looks like the kingdom of God: the hungry are fed; the wealthy and the powerful who are doing violence for their own sake are toppled with nonviolence and solidarity; the oppressed are raised up; outsiders, including refugees, are welcomed with open arms and open hearts; broken people are being made whole; lonely people are being welcomed into community; all people are learning to live together in peace for the welfare of all. Abundant life looks like what we have seen in people like Jean Vanier, who gave up the perks and privileges of his life to live with developmentally handicapped men in community. Like Mahatma Gandhi, who led his people in nonviolent protest against the British Empire. Like Martin Luther King, Jr., who led the fight for civil rights for all people in the US, regardless of colour or status. Like Nelson Mandela, who fought against apartheid, was imprisoned for it, and upon his release refused to give in to violence against his former oppressors. And Jesus proclaims that this eternal, abundant life begins now, not when we die. Jesus shows us that heaven is found on earth, if only we have eyes to see it and the courage to live it. The point of Jesus’ life is not the crucifixion. It is the incarnation. Jesus wasn’t born to die. Jesus was born to live—abundantly. Death is inevitable, but the hope of incarnation is that life happens, that eternal life happens, and that it happens right now. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Not a Peace, But Maybe a Ceasefire
A
bu Muhammad al-Golani is an Islamist fanatic, a head-chopper (although only in moderation), and the leader of the Nusra Front, an al-Qaeda affiliate that is classified by the United States as “terrorist”. He spent almost a decade killing American occupation troops and Shia civilians in Iraq as a loyal member of the Sunni extremist organisation that is now called Islamic State before going home to Syria in 2011. He was sent home to create a Syrian clone of what was then called ‘Islamic State in Iraq’, on the orders of Abu Baqr al-Baghdadi, the leader of Islamic State and now the self-proclaimed “Caliph” of all the Muslims. Golani named the Syrian branch the Nusra Front, and it did so well that he broke with Islamic State and went out on his own in 2013. There was a three-month turf war between Islamic State and the Nusra Front in Syria in early 2014 that killed an estimated 3,000 jihadis. Islamic State won it and now controls most of eastern Syria (and all of western Iraq). Golani managed to hang on to northwestern Syria, where the Nusra Front and another extreme Islamist organisation, Ahrar al-Sham, now completely dominate a rebel alliance that also includes several smaller “moderate” outfits. So you would not expect Golani to favour a peace deal that left the brutal Assad regime, secular in form but Shia-dominated, in power in Damascus. And indeed he does not: in a rare interview recently, he condemned the peace deal being cooked up by the US and Russia as “unacceptable”. It was, he said, a plot to merge more moderate rebel fighters with Assad’s forces in order to fight extremist groups like
his own and Islamic State. Golani was right to be suspicious, and yet he may go along with the deal in the end, because it isn’t really a permanent peace settlement that is being discussed. It’s actually just a ceasefire that will leave all the players in Syria in control of the territory they now hold — except for Islamic State, which they can then all concentrate on destroying. This is the sort of Machiavellian thinking that caused Russian President Putin to accuse Gwynne Vladimir Washington recently of “dividing terrorists into good Dyer and bad ones,” but it’s just as much a part of Russian thinking. When Moscow started bombing the rebels in Syria in September to save the Assad regime from collapse, it bombed them all indiscriminately: the Nusra Front, Islamic State, even the “moderates”, if it could find them. But it quickly became clear that what Russia had in mind, after stabilising the battlefronts, was precisely what Golani was condemning: a ceasefire that would effectively partition Syria between the Assad regime and the various rebel groups, and enable them all to turn on Islamic State. You can’t admit that that’s what you are doing, of course, so you talk in terms of a peace settlement. That’s what Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Foreign Secretary John Kerry were doing in Moscow on Tuesday, and the result is that a United Nations Security Council resolution endorsing the Syrian peace process will probably be passed on Friday. The current round of “peace talks” began in Vienna on 23 October, with no Syrians present, just Russia, the United
States, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. It subsequently expanded to include about twenty countries, and the organisers are now deciding which Syrians can attend the next round of talks, probably early in the new year. On one side, obviously, will be the the representatives of the Assad regime. On the other side will be some of the leaders of the armed opposition, but not all of them. Islamic State won’t be there, of course, and at the moment the Nusra Front says it won’t be either. Since those are the two most powerful groups fighting the Assad regime, what’s the point of talks? But the Nusra Front’s close ally, Ahrar al-Sham, did show up at last week’s meeting in Riyadh where decisions were being made on which groups could attend the peace talks. At one point it walked out — and then, after some further thought, it added its signature to the joint declaration. The Islamists of the Nusra Front and Ahrar al-Sham are clearly in two minds about a ceasefire (disguised as a peace agreement). On one hand, it would leave the Assad regime in power. On the other, it would give them time to consolidate their control over the territory they now hold, and maybe to eliminate their most dangerous rival, Islamic State. So in the end, they may go along with the idea. It wouldn’t be perfect, and it wouldn’t necessarily be permanent either. But it would stop most of the killing, it would at least contain if not eliminate Islamic State, and it might even let some of the refugees go home. It’s basically a Russian initiative, but Moscow is wisely letting the US take the lead now. If anybody has a better idea, please let us all know. Gray fitting in nicely with Ice
Newcomer Austin Gray working himself into a regular role with the Kootenay Ice Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
For as long as he can remember, Austin Gray has been a goal scorer. And that’s what he wants to develop into at the Western Hockey League level now that he has a fresh start with the Kootenay Ice. “I haven’t been able to get on the scoresheet yet, but I know I’ll break through,” Gray said prior to practice at Western Financial Place Thursday afternoon. “That’s kind of the role I’d like to play, but whatever I can do to help the team win, that’s what I want to do. “Obviously, I’d like to get a win. I haven’t had a win. Haven’t won in the jersey yet, but so far I’ve been enjoying it. I think we’re getting better… and there are good things to come.” The Ice acquired Gray from the Portland Winterhawks in a multi-player deal back on Nov. 29, in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft. “I think he fits in real well with our group,” said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Kootenay Ice, Thursday afternoon prior to practice at Western Financial Place. “He seems to get along with the guys and he’s eager to get better and improve his game. He’s got lots of questions, which is great. “Everyone has to keep in mind, he’s essentially another firstyear player for us… Considering all that, he’s fit in admirably.” With only 14 WHL games to his credit through parts of three seasons with the Winterhawks and now the Ice, Gray has plenty of learning and growing left to do, but his eagerness is an encouraging sign as far as coach Pierce is concerned. “He’s got to add some strength,” Pierce said. “He’s a pretty slight kid and that makes it tough in this league to be ultra-effective. But he’s able to do it by using his brain and that’s an asset. As he gets stronger and quick-
er, I think he’ll be a real good player for us. “So far, it’s just being sharp every shift and making sure he’s in the right spots and keeping the game simple, no different than what we’re asking from a lot of guys.” There’s no question the Ice could use a breakthrough from the 18-year-old Gray, who put up 25 goals and 64 points in 37 games with the Cariboo Cougars of the B.C. Major Midget League last season. Having scored 64 goals through 34 games, the Ice own the most anemic offense in the Western Hockey League, though it begs to be reminded the team has suffered a mind-numbing run of injuries.
“I was just sick of getting pushed around in my hometown. I finally had enough of it. I couldn’t score a goal, so I thought I’d get beat up in front of my friends and family.” Austin Gray Kootenay Ice Elite scorer Jaedon Descheneau (shoulder surgery) has missed 32 games and is expected to miss the duration of the 2015-16 campaign. Captain and leading scorer Luke Philp (ankle surgery, head) has missed 12 games and counting and second-leading scorer Zak Zborosky (lower body) missed 13 games. With five other forwards missing varying amounts of time due to injury, there was plenty of opportunity for Gray to step right in. The fresh start was a welcome one for the na-

I was happy when I got the phone call.” With a few weeks under his belt to acquaint himself with new systems, new teammates and a new coaching staff, Gray is looking forward to finding the scoresheet and getting a win. Though he hasn’t found the back of the net yet, Gray is certainly willing to do whatever it takes to help his team, as evidenced by the fact he dropped the gloves with 20-year-old WHL veteran Luke Harrison back on Dec. 8 in Prince George.’ “To be honest, I was just sick of getting pushed around in my hometown,” Gray said with a chuckle. “I finally had enough of it. I couldn’t score a goal, so I thought I’d get beat up in front of my friends and family.” While the physical side of the game might not be top priority for the 6-foot, 162-pound Gray, he isn’t shy when it comes down to it. “When it’s there, I’ll take it,” Gray said. “I’m

not afraid to go into the corner with someone bigger than myself. I don’t go out of my way to make big hits, but if the hit’s there I don’t shy away from it.” The next opportunity for Gray to perhaps find the scoresheet and help his new club get a win comes Friday as the Ice (6-26-2-0) travel to Red Deer for a rematch with the Rebels (22-11-0-0). Tuesday at Western Financial Place, the Ice battled the Rebels hard in a 4-2 loss, with plenty of positives to build upon heading into the final weekend before the holiday break. “We’ve got to make sure that we try to find ways to capitalize offensively a little more with the zone time that we do create,” Pierce said looking to Friday night. “We’ve got to be a little cleaner coming out of our end with possession
and we’re going to need our special teams to contribute. “Our penalty kill was really good [Tuesday] and you may not get a lot of power-play opportunities, but we’ve got to find a way to capitalize.” Puck drop between the Ice and Rebels is set for 8 p.m. (Rogers Sportsnet) from the Enmax Centrium in Red Deer. After Friday’s tilt, the Ice continue north to visit the Edmonton Oil Kings (13-18-3-0) Saturday at Rexall Place before taking a holiday breather. The Ice return to action Sunday, Dec. 27 at 4 p.m. when they host the Calgary Hitmen (21-121-1) at Western Financial Place. Notes: Ice D Tanner Lishchynsky, who suffered a lower-body injury Tuesday, is expected to miss approximately two to four weeks...
Local swimmer Jennifer Depippo’s quest to represent Canada at the Paralympic Games continues, with recent competition at the Can-Am Games in Bismarck, North Dakota. The 2015 Can-Am Open was held from Dec. 10-12. It also served as the U.S. Paralympics Swimming Open, giving American swimmers to earn qualification slots for their country in preparation for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Depippo said that despite the “Can-Am” moniker, the event had a real global flavour, with swimmers from Russia, China, Japan, Australia, Cuba, Puerto Rico and St. Croix also competing. “The level of competition was really good,” Depippo said upon her return. “It was a real eyeopener for me.” Depippo said that for the North Dakota meet, her international classication was bumped up from a Level 8 to a Level 9. “That’s a tougher, more competitive level — a bigger test,” she said. “But I’m prepared to take that on. “I knew that I could do it, and I proved that I could do it.” Depippo’s results were as follows: • 400 metre freestyle — 6min. 30sec. • 100 metre backstroke — 1min., 50.6 sec. • 50 metre freestyle — 39.05sec • 100 freestyle —

1min. 23.46 sec. • 100 breaststroke — 2 min. 0.41 sec. “Overall, these were my best times at any meet,” Depippo said. “I am really happy with my results. “I knocked two seconds off my backstroke time, another second off my 100-metre free, almost 15 seconds off my 400-metre free, and eight seconds off my breaststroke.” Next up for Depippo is the BC Provincials, to be held in Victoria in March, 2016. After that, she’s likely heading to Toronto for Team Canada Paralympic qualifying. Depippo would like to thank her local sponsors: Frank Sandor from Sandor Rental, Geoff Berry from Geoff’s Contracting, Jim Fiorentino from the Fiorentino Brothers, New Dawn Developments, Chris Thom at Rocky Montain Diesel, Derick Spring at Northstar GM, Ben Coles from Promotory Press, AM music, and the Cranbrook Colonels Oldtimers Hockey Club.

After Hamhuis injury, are full face shields in NHL’s distant future? Stephen Whyno Canadian Press
TORONTO - The gruesome sight of Dan Hamhuis on the ice with his legs flailing made fellow NHL players cringe.
A shot like the one that cracked the Vancouver Canucks defenceman in the face could happen to anyone. Hamhuis is out two months after surgery to
hit him squarely in the jaw from close range. Only a full-face shield or cage could have prevented that injury. The league and Players’ Association only two years
repair facial fractures. Even though he wears a visor like a vast majority of the league now, it couldn’t save him when a slap shot from the New York Rangers’ Dan Boyle
ago mandated visors for incoming players, but there could be a day in the distant future when full facial protection like in youth, college and women’s hockey, is

coming in and they did, and then no one thought visors were coming in and they did. I’m sure there will be a day down the road one day here where it is (normal). I think it’s a ways off. It’ll get here one day.” One Eastern Conference executive said no matter the rules on visors there will always be an outlier injury that occurs and doesn’t think it’s an immediate problem that needs to be addressed. Current players are conflicted on the subject but are in agreement that full face shields aren’t coming any time soon. Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Matt Hunwick called the Hamhuis injury a “freak accident,” even if similar plays happen often. Go into any locker-room and there are a handful of players who remember losing teeth or breaking bones from an errant stick or a puck. It’s basically the only way anyone in the NHL now puts on a full face shield. Philadelphia Flyers forward Sam Gagner, who recently suffered a concussion when his head hit the ice, remembers breaking his jaw in 2013 and was no fan of wearing the full shield. “It hinders you,” Gagner said. “Your vision of the puck, it throws that off a bit.” At the world junior hockey championship, any player under the age of 18 has to wear a full face shield. That included Connor McDavid at the 2014 tournament. Sharks centre Joe Thornton is one of the remaining players to go without a visor and said when he was 14 he couldn’t wait to take it off once he was allowed to. Leafs forward Shawn Matthias hasn’t worn one in 12 years and can’t imagine face shields ever becoming mandatory, though he wonders about alterations. “You never know, maybe they’ll change the rule on how low the visors go or something,” said Matthias, who wore a full shield in junior because of a facial injury. “I’m sure back then they didn’t think everyone would be wearing visors nowadays. I just can’t see the whole league - or anyone - wearing a face mask.”

I walked the Juyong Pass – 3500 steps up, to a height of 7.8m, on a 5m wide path, to a viewing garrison, then 3500 steps down! It took about one hour up, half hour down. There was snow at the top and thick smog the entire way! I couldn’t see much, but I had to do it, it was on the ‘bucket list’! But I may have to return, as I really want to gaze out along the Wall on a clear day and see the vast expanse of history that others have seen. Regardless, it was one of those ‘pinch me’ experiences! Next time: Yangtze River and the Three Gorges. For more information, contact Carla Nelson, Branch Manager, Maritime Travel 250.489.4788.

tion, or erosion from mud slides or sandstorms. During the Ming Dynasty, once China was unified, reconstruction of the wall began in earnest. This was around 1474. Strategic planning began with inner and outer walls and fortresses with garrisons and gates. The wall was considered vital to the defense of China during this time. Between the 18th and 20th centuries, the Great Wall emerged as the most common emblem of China for the Western World, viewed as a show of strength and also a barrier from the rest of the world. In 1987, Unesco designated the Great Wall as a World Heritage Site, recognizing it as one of the most impressive architectural feats in history. And no, you cannot see the Great Wall from the moon! This is just a myth. These are the most common places to walk the Great Wall:

he Great Wall is over 6,000 km long, we think. No one really knows for sure. It was built over three Dynasties — Qin, Ming, Qing — and took 2,000 years to build. In Chinese, Great Wall is Chang Cheng, meaning ‘Long Wall’. Emperor Qin began construction of the wall in the 3rd century BC, as a means of preventing incursions from the barbarian nomads into the Chinese empire. It didn’t really work. Many fortifications were in place prior to the Qin Dynasty, but it was Qin who ordered that they all be joined to form a continuous wall. During this time, it was reported that over 400,000 labourers died, many buried within the walls themselves. As late as 2009, 180 km of the wall was discovered by GPS devices, and in 2015 another 10km was uncovered. About 2,000 km of the original wall has vanished over time, due to new road construc-

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You will feel better and better as the day goes on. Your energy starts to increase, no matter how you are dealing with a situation. Extremes are likely to play a role in your decisions. By the late afternoon, you will feel as if the Force is with you. Tonight: All smiles. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Meetings play a significant role in your decision-making process. You hear many different opinions, but you’ll lean toward the most positive one. You might want to zero in on what you want without any fuss. Know when you’re too tired to go on. Tonight: Take your leave with grace. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You’ll give your time and attention to a higher-up who will have something for you to do at the last minute. You come from a secure point of view, but you’ll still experience a lot of pressure from your personal life. You cannot be stopped. Tonight: The spotlight is on you!
CANCER (June 21-July 22) Take an overview, and don’t feel intimidated by someone else’s efforts. You could be too focused on what others are doing. Stop comparing yourself to them. You will accomplish what you want even more quickly and far better than you had imagined. Tonight: In the limelight. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) A partner’s emotional response will encourage you to back off some. You could be tired of always having to maintain a positive outlook. Next time you want to tell it like it is, do. You might need to indulge yourself more. Tonight: Make sure there is great music around you. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You might find that you spend most of the day responding and/ or reacting to others. You have a lot of energy, but you still could feel overwhelmed by everything that is happening. A domestic issue lurks in the background. Tonight: Express your caring in a meaningful way. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You might feel as if you’re being
Tundra
weighed down by everything you have to do. Rather than let yourself be stressed, relax and just focus on one task at a time. You will be surprised and delighted when a loved one offers to pitch in. Tonight: Have fun with a favorite person. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Your emotional responses will point you in the right direction. You might not be aware of how many supporters you have, especially in your group of friends. You could go overboard without trying. Settle down by the late afternoon. Tonight: Beam in what you want. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You will need to tackle some work or responsibilities in the morning, as tension builds to new level. Your creativity soars, as does your desirability. You might be holding back because of feelings for someone else. Are you sure this behavior serves you? Tonight: Be naughty and nice. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Make calls and schedule a meeting. The sooner you get this ap-
pointment arranged, the better off you will be. You’ll cover so much ground, you might want to head home early. You likely will need to make some important calls after you leave. Tonight: Run an errand or two. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Money, gift-giving and considering more of an experience-oriented present will fill your mind with ideas. Brainstorm with a partner or dear friend, though the topic could drift to dinner plans and perhaps a little gossip. Tonight: Welcome the weekend with friends. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You know exactly what you want, and you’ll manage to get past any hassles in the morning. Others keep distracting you from your errands and from accomplishing what you need to do. Focus on the financial implications of all your gift-giving. Tonight: Let a friend treat. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Is it appropriate or even normal for a husband to always ask who I am on the phone with or who just texted me? Or to stand behind me while I’m reading my email, unabashedly reading over my shoulder? I don’t have anything to hide, but I find this behavior intrusive and annoying. Sometimes, he will even ask for details about certain parts of my conversation. I don’t dare refuse to answer for fear he will think I’m trying to conceal something. He has a quick temper and becomes defensive and angry if I question him. I hate conflict, so I just answer his questions to avoid his outbursts. One time, my best friend confided something highly personal to me and specifically asked me not to tell anyone. When I refused to disclose this information to my husband, he got very angry, arguing that spouses shouldn’t keep secrets from one another. I don’t feel it’s wrong to keep a confidence that has absolutely nothing to do with him. He did not agree, and I ended up telling him a less-detailed version of our conversation. But I was upset that he pressured me until I conceded. My husband doesn’t automatically report his conversations to me, and I don’t expect him to. Am I too private or is he too nosy? -- Nothing to Hide but My Annoyance Dear Nothing: He’s way too nosy. Confidences between friends or family members do not have to be shared as long as they don’t involve the spouse or the marriage. Saying that you were on the phone with “Myrtle” is sufficient information. Some spouses tell each other every detail of every conversation, but that is up to them. In your case, your husband is badgering and pressuring you for additional information. Either he doesn’t trust you, or he needs to control you. (It’s also possible he is guilty of doing things that he doesn’t want you to know about, and this is why he is overly concerned with your phone conversations and emails.) What concerns us the most is that you feel you must constantly appease him because of his anger issues. Tell him to knock it off before he turns into a full-fledged bully and the marriage is in serious trouble. If he refuses, or if you believe his anger is dangerous or more than you can handle, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline (thehotline.org) at 1-800-799-SAFE. Dear Annie: My wife and I are having a disagreement about how to sign cards and notes. Does the man’s name come first or does the woman’s? I have always put my name first, but lately she says that her name should be first. So should it be “Tim and Marlene”? Or is it “Marlene and Tim?” -- Your Opinion, Please Dear Tim: Your wife is right. Etiquette says the woman’s name comes first in all cases except where the signature is “Mr. and Mrs. John Smith” or some variation. Of course, not everyone cares, in which case, sign your names however you choose. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Kathleen Adell Tanner passed away in Calgary, Alberta on Monday, December 14, 2015 at the age of 60 years. Kathie was born on March 14, 1955 in Saskatoon, SK. She was the second of five children born to Robert and Vivian Berger. Kathie grew up with her family in Wardner and it was here that she met the love of her life, Tim Tanner. Kathie and Tim have known each other since grade school and have always been “two peas in a podâ€?. Theirs has been a long and lasting love. Kathie and Tim were married on February 23, 1974 and soon after their marriage, they dedicated their life to Jehovah in Edmonton, Alberta. They were blessed with two sons; Clayton and Ben. They raised their family in Kimberley and made this their home for the past 40 years. Kathie was a stay-at-home mom to her boys and was very devoted to them. Despite her declining health in later years, Kathie always enjoyed life to the fullest – from camping, gardening and enjoying her family and those around her. She had a positive attitude and was a fighter right to the end. One of the most special days for Kathie was on March 21, 2015 when her beloved grandson was born – Emerson Stark Tanner. When she spoke of Emerson she glowed with pride and was so very happy to be a Grandma! Kathie leaves to mourn her passing her beloved husband; Tim and her sons; Clayton (Joanne) and Ben (Ashley) as well as her favorite grandson; Emerson. She also leaves behind her father; Robert Berger and her sisters and brother; Arlene (Jim), Roberta (Graham), Jackie (Sim) and Randy (Tracy). She also leaves Joan who had a very special place in Kathie’s life as her “spiritual momâ€?. Kathie leaves many extended family members; aunt, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Kathie was predeceased by her mother, Vivian. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at 2:00 pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Marysville, BC. Memorial donations may be made in Kathie’s memory to a charity of one’s choice. Condolences may be left for the family at www.markmemorial.com Mark Memorial Funeral Services in care of arrangements (250) 426-4864.

You’ve got to advertise to get your share of business or lose it to the stores that do. If you cut back on your advertising, you may forfeit new prospective customers to your competition.
3. Advantage Over Competitors Who Cut Back. A five year survey of more than 3,000 companies found that advertisers who maintained or expanded advertising during a troubled economy saw sales increase an average of 100%.
4. Continuous Advertising Strengthens Your Image. When people who postpone buying come back to the marketplace, you’ve got a better chance of getting their business if you’ve continued to maintain a solid, reliable image.
5. Direct Advertising is Cost Efficient. Direct has the advantages – demographic and geographic numbers to afford advertisers the best value and exposure for their advertising dollar.
Advertising works! Businesses that succeed are usually strong, steady advertisers. Look around. You’ll find the most aggressive and consistent advertisers are almost invariably the most successful.
Salespeople are on the payroll. As long as you’re in business, you have overhead and you’ve got to advertise to generate a steady cash flow.
9. Advertise to Keep a Healthy Positive Image. In a troubled economy, rumors and bad news travel fast. Advertising corrects gossip, shoots down false reports and projects positively.
10. Advertise to Maintain Employee Morale. When advertising and promotion are cut, salespeople become less motivated. They may believe the store is cutting back, even going out of business.

RMD’s Crashed Cars makes $10,000 Starlite Gift to Oncology F o r t h e Tow n s m a n
In what’s become an annual tradition of saying thanks to its customer and staff, Chris Thom (and his family) of Rocky Mountain Diesel and Autobody have taken the joy of giving back to health care a mainstay of their holiday spirit. Over the years the family and business have supported EKFH in providing funding for various areas of care for both hospitals and health care facilities throughout the East Kootenay. awareness event. Every vehicle that enters and leaves the shop receives a personal message from Chris that shares the story of their recognizing the business support and their employees’ commitment with a gift to EKFH. “It’s an exceptional story of giving back to community,” says Donna Grainger, EKFH Executive Director. “Although the focus of the Starlite Campaign is about lighting stars atop the East Kootenay Regional Hospital roofline it really is the stars on the ground that are making a huge difference in the quality of health care here in the East Kootenay. Chris and Rocky Mountain Diesel have had an incredible impact through their generous financial support over the years, “adds Grainger. This year the $10,000 gift is being dedicated to support the East Kootenay Regional Hospital Oncology Unit. “We all know someone whose lives, individually and the family, have been affected with a cancer diagnosis. The gift to the oncology unit is our way of highlighting and saying thanks for the talented and dedicated oncology team that provides services to individuals from throughout the region,” explains Chris Thom, Owner at Rocky Mountain Diesel & Autobody. Whether you wish to say thanks, acknowledge a loved one, or simply just because a gift to the Starlite Campaign can provide funding to purchase critically needed medical equipment and/or patient comforts. Donations can be made on-line at www.ekfh.ca; at your local hospital or health care facility or through Canada Post to EKFH, 13 24th Ave N, Cranbrook, BC V1C 3H9. Questions?
