Winter homeless shelter opens Riverside Road facility to provide 40 beds until the end of April Laura RODGERS Abbotsford News
Just over three weeks ago, it was an empty lot. Now, the temporary homeless shelter on Riverside Road is up and running, with 40 beds for people to sleep, and meal service during the day. “There were some challenging times in getting this facility to where it is now,” said Shayne Williams, executive director of Lookout Emergency Aid Society. Lookout, a non-profit that also operates five shelters throughout the Lower Mainland, is running the facility with a $450,000 grant from BC Housing. The building costs of $750,000 were provided by the City of Abbotsford through gas taxes earmarked for community initiatives. The shelter itself was built, or rather assembled, at top speed. It’s made out of six construction trailers attached side by side, with areas for sleeping, eating, socializing, and connecting with community support. Those who stay at the shelter won’t have to trek through the cold in order to sign up for housing assistance, get a medical checkup, or connect with many of Abbotsford’s other agencies providing aid to homeless people. Instead, representatives from Fraser Health, Abbotsford Community Services and other groups will host office hours right at the shelter, a

CHRISTMAS PRESENCE
BOXING WEEK SALE STARTS DEC 26TH!
Vancouver’s Pacific Theatre and Gallery 7 Theatre in Abbotsford partnered to present Christmas Presence on Saturday at Matsqui Centennial JOHN MORROW Abbotsford News Auditorium. The show featured musicians and actors presenting songs, stories and poems for the holiday season.
Next step is to more stable housing From A1
“community hub” strategy Williams said is precedent-setting. The facility’s kitchen wasn’t quite ready along with the beds, so the Salvation Army is cooking three meals a day for shelter residents and driving them over. The shelter will operate until the end of April, and then is expected to reopen for the winter of 2016-17. Because it isn’t a permanent facility, the city wasn’t required to go through the time-consuming and costly process of community consultation. Temporary shelters are allowed in all types of zoning, and the Riverside lot is cityowned. City staff say they looked into using an unoccupied existing building for the facility, but none worked out. By April, Lookout and the city hope many of those staying at the building will be able to find their way to more stable housing. It’s likely many will, as Williams said Lookout’s other shelters usually help about half their clients get off the streets. While there won’t be any more overnight stays allowed after May 1, the city’s housing team hopes to continue to offer related services at the site. By 2017, a permanent 30-bed supportive-housing building for men who are homeless or at risk of homeless-
ness will open on Gladys Avenue, and this will provide another option for clients. As a “low-barrier” shelter, people won’t have to be clean and sober to stay at Riverside, though they won’t be able to drink or use drugs inside – as it is with all provincially funded beds, Williams notes. Lookout staff hope the facility will soon be able to administer medication on-site, through a partnership with Fraser Health, although this service isn’t yet offered. ❑❑❑ It was a long, difficult path for Abbotsford to go from a city known for conflicts with the homeless to one spending three-quarters of a million dollars to house them over the winter. There has long been a shortage of shelter beds available in the area, and city efforts to disperse clusters of homeless campers began escalating in 2013. City staff spread chicken manure near one popular camp area, casting widespread negative attention on Abbotsford. When the city closed down a tent city that had been erected in Jubilee Park in late 2013, a group of homeless activists launched a lawsuit against the city. In October of this year, they won the right to sleep outdoors in city parks and to erect overnight shelters or tents, after a protracted legal
battle in B.C. Supreme Court. Throughout the trial, the city hesitated to evict a tent city that sprung up on city land along Gladys Avenue, citing the sensitive nature of the case and the campers’ political motivations. Now that the city’s shortage of shelter beds has been partially alleviated, Mayor Henry Braun has said he will begin the process of trying to remove the Gladys campers in January. ❑❑❑ Coun. Dave Loewen, who sits on the city’s Homelessness Action Advisory Committee, said the process of opening the new shelter was a delicate balancing act. “They’re going to pick their first five residents carefully,” said Loewen, recalling a discussion he had with those involved in recruiting the shelter’s first residents. “They want the right mix of the first group so they’re a welcoming body with a group culture … they’re going to slowly build it.” Williams said this wasn’t the case, and the shelter would take anyone who wanted to stay. But regardless of the approach, the city and advocates agree this shelter is a positive step. “I think there’s great possibility here for the most vulnerable people,” said Williams.

$8M solution floated to prevent ‘catastrophic’ flooding of the Fraser
BOXING WEEK SALE STARTS DEC 26TH!
New study cites defences – council eyes $8 million fix Laura RODGERS Abbotsford News
Every year, the southern banks of the Fraser River erode closer to the dikes protecting the Matsqui Prairie floodplain. The city has a plan to stop it – at the cost of $8 million. A year-long, $180,000 study found a deepening pattern of “erosion arcs,” where strong currents chew into soft silt at the bottom of the riverbank. If any were to wear deep enough to breach the Matsqui dikes, it could trigger a catastrophic flood estimated to cause over $2 billion in damage. “I think we are playing with fire,” said Mayor Henry Braun. N o r t h w e s t Hydraulics, a consulting firm hired by the city, found the erosion is ultimately caused by sediment carried from upstream. As that sediment expands the Sumas and Matsqui bars in the middle of the river, water flow is redirected and pummels the banks. If nothing is done, erosion will accelerate. The consultants recommended building an array of rock spurs underwater at the river’s edge, to redirect the flow. The project would cost $8 million in total, phased in over eight years. The city approved this recommendation last Monday. Now the only issue is lobbying for provincial or federal funding for all or part of the project’s cost. “This is not something that can be funded out of property taxes,” said Braun. Matsqui Prairie, one

Past failures of the dike system, in 1894 and 1948, caused devastating floods. Since then, farming in the area has intensified and industrialized, and a future flood would risk loss of life and deal a serious economic blow to the region. The area flooded would include Highway 11, multiple railways, the JAMES wastewater treatment plant, a military communication centre, agricultural processing facilities and residential areas. In 2013, an erosion arc came within 30
metres of one of the dikes, prompting an emergency repair that cost nearly $3 million. While funding can be
I think we are playing with fire. Mayor Braun accessed quickly for emergency repairs, money for preventive measures takes more bureaucratic wrangling. Two new arcs have emerged since the 2014 emergency, bringing their total number to six since 1997. Currently, the closest
arc sits at 55 metres from a dike, resulting in the closure of a section of the Trans-Canada Trail, which runs along the river in that area. Coun. Dave Loewen noted that recent dike upgrades have cost over $11 million, with more than half coming from city coffers. “I just find it unconscionable that we, our taxpayers, should be paying the majority of this cost,” Loewen said. The overall state of the dike system across all Fraser River floodplains in B.C. is understood to be poor, with a provincial report from 2014 noting that “most of the existing dikes do not meet the current minimal provincial

standard, and would only provide protection against smaller flood events.” As the riverbank is the traditional fishing territory of the Sumas First Nation, consultation would be required before building could begin. Another possible option for halting erosion – armoring the bank with rocks – was rejected partly because it could snag Sumas fishing nets. Stephen McGlen, the Sumas First Nation lands and resource manager, said past consultation about alterations to the riverbank has been “inadequate,” and he hopes the situation will improve in the future.

Christmas lights thief has a change of heart Stolen items returned three days after theft Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
The Grinch stole Christmas, but then gave it back to Abbotsford single mom Wendi Ingram last week. About two weeks ago, Ingram put up three strings of coloured lights, as she does every year, along the bush that separates her house from her neighbours’ on Spencer Street in east Abbotsford. She painstakingly places them in a zigzag pattern, and it brings her a bit of Christmas cheer. Ingram has never had a problem with them in the past, but this year she was saddened when she noticed they were missing on the early evening of Friday, Dec. 11. She filed a report with the Abbotsford Police, knowing that they appreciate knowing when crime is happening in a neighbourhood.
ONLINE abbynews.com
Ingram wasn’t sure if she was going to replace the lights, but she didn’t give it too much extra thought. Three days later, she left her home in the morning and returned in the early afternoon to discover that the lights had been returned. And not only were they back, but they were “fairly decently” strung up along the bush again. “I was flabbergasted. I was absolutely thrilled. I was so happy. I’m a single mom, and money is a struggle sometimes,” she said. Ingram was so pleased that she later placed a wooden sign in the ground near the bush, with the words “Thank You!” written on it. She speculates that perhaps the thief wanted the lights for a festive occasion and then returned them when they were no longer needed.

The Christmas question loop for couples Andrew
Holota
On Point Anyone in a relationship is likely to be familiar with Questions That Have Only One Answer – Except When They Don’t. What’s amusing is how they become so prevalent around Christmas. Example: It’s the night of an official Christmas party. She has donned a dress that involved considerable seeking, soul-searching and, finally, selection. You know the question is coming, because it was asked several times previously… “Do you like this dress?” Anyone with enough brain power to operate a TV remote is aware that the answer is Yes. Definitely Yes. Utterly Yes. Anything less than Oh Heavens Yes has high potential to result in drama, for all concerned. Therefore, Yes.
Having passed the first Christmas IQ quiz, this can be followed by: “Do you think I’m getting heavier?” Only someone with a self-destructive tendency would answer in any fashion than a surprised, “Heavier? Gosh, no!” Definitely No. Positively No. Oh Gracious No. However, it can get trickier... At the party, she casts a glance at a guest, and casually throws this one out: “Do you like her dress?” All systems on alert. This is not an immediate Yes answer. This tests whether you are in tune with the night’s first question. To answer Yes at this point indicates you may not have been sincere in the affirmative reply to the same query at home. Reference drama. However, a quick No may be leading into a judgmental minefield. “Why?” Step very, very carefully now. One must be completely positive that any feature about to be criticized is not also an element of the outfit wholeheartedly endorsed just a short time earlier. Go with: “I like yours much more.” And just in case someone is thinking
this is gender stereotyping, men are guilty of the same double-speak. She asks: “What would you like for Christmas?” His earnest response: “Who, me? Oh ... I’m just happy to be with you.” He lies like a dog. If there would be nothing under the
All systems on the alert. This is not an immediate Yes answer. This is a test. tree for him come Christmas morning, there’d be a stubbly bottom lip dragging all over the house for the rest of the holidays. So he deserves it when he poses the same question (at the last minute), and she coyly returns with an equally unhelpful answer. “I’ve been giving you hints all year.” Uh oh. Really? When?
Busted. Even the simpler tasks around this time of year seem to send couples into a Groundhog Day-style communication loop. I watched a young husband and wife at a big retail store, engaged in the search for the right Christmas tree. They appeared intelligent and well-educated, but their exchange went like this: He holds up a tree and looks at her quizzically. “How about this one? What do you think?” She purses her lips, and shrugs. “I don’t know. What do you think?” He says: “Here, you hold it.” She does and then asks: “So? What do you think?” Role reversal: “I dunno, what do think?” Clearly trying to build consensus, she offers: “I’m not sure. What do you think?” There were lots of trees to choose from. For all I know, those two are still out there on that parking lot. I hope they have a merry Christmas – and you, as well.

letters Buying into carbon-is-the-problem fiction
In response to the Dec. 4 article on climate change by Tom Fletcher: Thank you, sir, for presenting some actual science into this global warming science fiction that the likes of Al Gore and David Suzuki have been pitching for over a decade. People should simply follow the money. Billionaire Al Gore and his rich buddies established a carbon credit company in 2004 (Generation Investment Management of GIM) so they could cash in on this idea of carbon swaps. To do this, they needed to sell the idea that CO2 was a poison and an Earth-killer, so in 2006 they released the book and movie “An Inconvenient Truth.” Gore made money in appearance fees, book sales, movie revenue and, oh, trading carbon credits while he toured the world with his global warming horror show. One problem: Carbon dioxide is not a poison or pollution. It’s a plant food. Less then four per cent of our air is C02. At two per cent, the world’s plants start to die. The Earth’s CO2 level has historically been much higher. In fact, higher levels would increase
global plant growth and maybe improve our crop yields. Water vapour is a real greenhouse gas and it is never mentioned by this new generation of Chicken Littles. I guess they haven’t figured out a way to make money on water vapour swaps yet. The carbon trade business keeps crashing (a ton of carbon that once sold for $9 is under 10 cents) and now thousands of dissenting world scientists are signing petitions and writing their books. (I strongly suggest people read Dr. Ian Plimer’s “Heaven and Earth: Global Warming The Missing Science” for a lucid second opinion.) Governments have bought in to this carbon-is-the-problem fiction because they see new tax money. Why else would B.C. send a planeload of politicians and their bean counters to Paris recently? Wrapped in a cloak of environmental righteousness, they plan ways to tax one and all for daring to consume or produce carbon. Memo to Christy Clark and Gregor Robertson: the human body is 18.5 per cent carbon. You can expect my bill for your excessive carbon use any day now. Dave Kyle
Support that goes past the holiday season As we head into the holiday season, various media sources remind us to give to those less fortunate than us. And for many years we have heeded that call. Yet, recent reports inform us that Canadians have reached another record when it comes to personal debt. Locally, we know that several long-term charitable organizations are struggling. Citizens who are deeply in debt are not likely to help those charities thrive. They are having a sufficiently difficult time just keeping our economy on the rails.
It is time for senior levels of government to take the issue of poverty – whether that of children or of adults – seriously. We all know of people who are struggling to keep their families in shelter, food and heat. Charities cannot be expected to pick up the slack for governments inadequately distributing tax dollars. In a Feb. 8, 2011 Province letter to the editor, Seth Klein (Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives) wrote: “Between the mid1970s and early 1990s, B.C. brought on stream almost 2,000 new units of social
housing per year. In contrast, a study we published in September found that over the last five years the government’s own numbers show an overall net increase of only 280 units.” Well-managed social housing can underpin both individuals and a community. Since we all gain by positive action, we need to remind our governments to do something for those who need support – action that goes well past the holiday season. Regina Dalton

$3.5-billion Massey Bridge
The starting point for youth to exit the sstreets.
Worse congestion expected at Alex Fraser Jeff NAGEL Black Press
A new bridge costing $3.5 billion to replace the Massey Tunnel is being planned by the province. Artist rendering shipping. A hefty federal grant could be used to reduce the expected toll, Stone said, or shorten the expected repayment period. The project has not yet got Treasury Board approval on the business case, which would mark the final go/no go decision point for the government. The province intends to solicit bids for the project in the spring. An environmental review is still required as well as Agricultural Land Commission approval to use some protected farmland. The province is aiming for a 2017 construction start and 2022 completion date for the new bridge. The province has so far spent about $30 million on the project.

The combined population of Surrey, Delta, Richmond and White Rock is projected to rise 51 per cent to 1.2 million by 2041, and the number of jobs in the same area are to climb 58 per cent. The 76-page business case – 18 months overdue but now released – assumes a $750 million initial injection of capital from private partners, to be paid back by government later. It concludes the project can be paid off with tolls over 35 to 60 years. Stone said the province is seeking federal contributions for the new bridge – which is its top priority for infrastructure grants – and it’s also asking Port Metro Vancouver to make a contribution because eliminating the tunnel will help open up the Fraser River to more
G AR
Building a new bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel is estimated to cost $3.5 billion and Transportation Minister Todd Stone says it will be tolled, with motorists paying a similar amount as they do at the Port Mann Bridge. Transportation ministry officials laid out details of the project, which will include the 10-lane bridge over the Fraser River and improvements to 25 kilometres of Highway 99, including three rebuilt interchanges. Two of the bridge lanes will be HOV/transit lanes. The project definition report claims commuters will save up to 30 minutes if they pay to cross the new bridge but it also projects 14 per cent of current traffic will divert to the Alex Fraser bridge to avoid tolls. Officials admit that will mean even heavier congestion at the Alex Fraser Bridge as a result, but Highway 99 motorists will ultimately face the same choice as those at Highway 1 – pay in cash for a quicker crossing or wait at the free one. Stone said he remains committed to exploring bridge toll reforms if both the new Massey and Pattullo bridges end up being tolled. “We want to hear from British Columbians on the toll, including any thoughts people have on tolling from a regional perspective,” he said, hinting that it may make sense to toll the Alex Fraser. “You could perhaps provide a lower toll on more crossings,” he said. “Tell us what you think about that.” Critics argue the new bridge will simply move a major bottleneck up Highway 99 to the Oak Street Bridge. But traffic counts show more than 60 per cent of northbound traffic crossing the tunnel is headed to and from Richmond, not on to Vancouver. And the project rationale also cites projections of dramatic population growth South of the Fraser in the decades ahead.
B.C.’s auditor general is conducting an audit to evaluate the quality of the evidence used to support the decision to replace the tunnel, and the Opposition maintains the province has pushed ahead with inadequate justification. “The real worry here is that the choice of this government is to build one large megaproject rather than deal with all of the transit needs in the region,” said NDP transit critic George Heyman. He questioned whether a federal contribution to the bridge might come at the cost of more money for improved transit. Delta South independent MLA Vicki Huntington also said the province should move faster to decide how it would make tolls more fair to all motorists crossing the Fraser. “It’s putting the people south of the Fraser at a huge disadvantage,” she said. “I hope we start evening out these costs to the public.” At three kilometres long, the new bridge at the Deas Island crossing will be the longest cable-stayed bridge in B.C. – 65 per cent longer than the Port Mann and 32 per cent longer than the Alex Fraser.

blamed the city for the lack of water, but a consultant’s report maintained that deep nearby city wells had no effect on the family’s shallow one. But their hard-luck story – dad Chris was laid off from the oil industry, and five kids made money tight – still won over council, who gave them leeway on payment with the justification that access to water is necessary for public health and safety. Payment plans will be offered only to owners of single-family residential properties who can demonstrate financial hardship. Applicants will need to be residents on their own property, have lived in Abbotsford for at least a year, and meet the Statistics Canada household low-income cutoff. The plans are only available to break up the costs of “service connections” to an existing water or sewer main, and cannot be used to cover the much higher cost of extending a main to a property outside the service area. The cost to extend pipes from the property line to the residence will be covered by the owner. Equal payments will be collected each July, along with property tax, for a maximum of five years. Based on how many people within the water service area rely on private wells, the city estimates approximately 15 more property owners may apply for payment plans. The majority of the cost for a service connection isn’t to immediately cover parts or labour. Rather, it’s mostly to pay into a collective plan covering the cost and ongoing maintenance of the water system as a whole. Otherwise, existing water users would be subsidizing new users. Smoking room, hedge required for women’s recovery centre Laura RODGERS Abbotsford News
A women’s recovery centre on Braeside Street will need to create an indoor smoking area and build a hedge before they can expand. L.I.F.E Recovery Society Association applied to add 12 beds to their existing 18 in October, but neighbours complained the centre’s residents were already causing disruption from loud outdoor conversations and second-hand smoke. The city approved the expansion, but only if the centre follows a set of restrictions. They have to install a smoke filter in one of the rooms, and all resi-
dents must only smoke indoors. They need to build a perimeter hedge along one side of their property, and repair any damage to their perimeter fence. And they need to work with the city to build a sidewalk in front of the building. The restrictions were chosen after city staff met with a representative from the centre and discussed neighbours’ concerns. Immediately after they heard the complaints, centre leadership made new rules to restrict when residents were allowed to smoke outside. The centre offers “ ab s t i n e n c e - b a s e d ” treatment, and doesn’t
allow anyone using drugs, including methadone, or actively de-
toxing. Instead, it offers those who just got clean a supportive
environment in which to live and to attend counselling.

The Abbotsford Youth Health Centre (AYHC) is hoping to immediately raise $10,000 to cover basic operational costs for an additional day a week until ongoing funding can be secured for the program expansion. The AbbotsfordSumas Rotary Club recently supported AYHC with a $2,500 donation, leaving another $7,500 to be raised. The centre currently operates two days a week for a total of seven hours out of a clinic at 1945 McCallum Rd., but organizers say the need has grown beyond the available hours. On average, 30 to 40 youth visit each clinic, and five to seven are turned away. The centre provides medical care and other urgent support to adolescents ages 12 to 24. Donations can be made online by visiting the website ayhc. ca.

One blanket can make a difference Decade of caring for those in need Kevin MILLS Black Press
When Gregory Ould offered a blanket to a homeless man back in 1995, he didn’t realize he was about to change his life’s focus. Ould is the co-founder, along with his son Ben, of Blanket BC Society, an organization based in Mission that collects and distributes blankets to those in need. Ould recalled that in October of 2005, he came out of a movie theatre in Vancouver and noticed a man sitting in an alcove. He approached the stranger and asked if there was anything he could do to help him. “He said, ‘I could use a blanket to survive the night.’ ” It was the “survive the night” comment that “floored” Ould. “I never thought about it like that before,” he said. Ould went to a local store and purchased the warmest blanket he could find.
“It made me feel good,” he explained. When Ould got home, his 22-monthold son Ben was still awake. While he knows he was really just talking out loud to himself, Ould reiterated the story to Ben. “But he acknowledged me,” said Ould, who then realized he and his son could do something more to help. He began to collect blankets to give away to shelters. In the first year he managed to acquire a modest amount, 67 blankets in all. But word spread and support grew. By the third year, in a three-month period, they collected 15,000 blankets. Now the society has blossomed into a year-round initiative composed of between 100 and 200 volunteers (blanketeers, he calls them) working throughout the year. When he was five, Ould’s son Ben began to lend a hand.
“That’s when I really started to help,” he said. “I’d go out and help deliver blankets.” The father/son team helped take the society to the next level. To date, the Blanket BC Society has collected more than 200,000 blankets, which they donate to more than 75 shelters across the province. “A lot of people in Mission don’t realize that we are headquartered here,” said Ould. Now he needs to find a storage space in Mission or Abbotsford to house the blankets before they get distributed. R e c e n t ly, Ben and Gregory were honoured by the BC Country Music Association. On Oct. 25, the father/son duo received the group’s Humanitarian of the Year award for their work with Blanket BC.

RCBC dreaming of a green Christmas for everyone ’Tis the season for gifts, lights, trees and delicious dinners. Whether you’re celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Festivus this holiday season, the Recycling Council of BC (RCBC) has come up with ideas
to help you celebrate your holiday in ways that also reduce your environmental footprint. Brock Macdonald, RCBC’s chief executive officer, says, “We’re asking British Columbians to rethink how they
celebrate, and explore some new, greener traditions” Among Macdonald’s suggestions: Opt for a live potted Christmas tree. He also suggests switching to LED light strings, which use 90 per cent less ener-

gy than incandescent lights, without the fire risk. As well, giving experiences as gifts is another great option. Instead of a cookbook, give a certificate for a cooking class or a foodie tour. To avoid disposable plastics, decorate by bringing nature inside. Cedar and pine tree branches, acorns and potted plants can bring colour and life into a room. They can also be composted at the end of their use, so no branch or leaf has to go to waste. RCBC wants to inspire British Columbians to reduce waste in their own creative and successful ways. For example, ever wondered what is better – a live Christmas tree that you use once, or a plastic tree that can be reused over several years? Did you know that excess tape can make wrapping paper unrecyclable? Instead RCBC has wrapping techniques available that significantly reduce the amount of tape needed. All are welcome to get tips and ideas on reducing their holiday waste at RCBC’s website: rcbc. ca/holiday-info. Eugene Reimer crew helps teens Students who are part of Eugene Reimer middle school’s Character Crew recently raised almost $1,100 to provide gifts for six disadvantaged teens this Christmas. The students, who say they think of themselves as “difference makers,” decided they wanted to change Christmas morning for those who are less fortunate and put a big smile on their faces. They held two fundraisers – a bake sale and a movie mania afternoon – and, under the guidance of their teacher Alisah McPhee, were able to get the wish lists of six teens.
The students said they were surprised to see that a popular item on the lists was pots and pans. The crew then went shopping and was able to get most of the items on the wish lists. They wrapped the gifts the next day during their lunch hour, and McPhee dropped them off at the end of the day. “We may not be able to change their circumstance, but we can change their Christmas. We can change their day. We can let them know people care,” wrote students Taylor Gibbons and Vienna Thivierge in a piece about the experience.

The Fraser Valley Thunderbirds came back from one-goal deficits twice on Sunday against the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs, but they couldn’t do it a third time. The Thunderbirds lost 3-2 to the Chiefs in British Columbia Major Midget League hockey regular season action at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Centre in Coqutilam, but put up a fight in the process. Fraser Valley fell behind 1-0 after the first period, but Mackenzie Wight tied the game up in the second period with a slapshot that found the top corner. The Chiefs pulled ahead again before the end of the second, but Wight scored again in the third to draw the Thunderbirds even. Abbotsford’s Ryan Crosby-Jones drew an assist on the second goal. However, the Chiefs pulled ahead for good with just 46 seconds left to earn the 3-2 win. The two teams met again on Monday night at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre, but details were not available at press time. Sunday’s loss drops the Thunderbirds’ record to 10 wins, nine losses and six ties on the season. They sit in seventh place in the BCMML. After Sunday’s game, Fraser Valley is off until Jan. 9. Juulsen cut from Canada Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News
Abbotsford’s Noah Juulsen will not be packing his bags for Finland. The 2015 Montreal Canadiens firstround draft pick was one of four cuts made by Team Canada on Sunday as it finalized its world junior championship roster. Juulsen starred on the Abbotsford Hawks before playing one season with the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds of the British Columbia Major Midget League. He was then drafted 70th overall by the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League in 2012, and is currently in his third season with the club. He recorded 52 points in 68 games last season, and has 11 points in 24 games this season. The defenceman previously won a silver medal with Canada in 2014 at the U17 World Junior Championships. Juulsen and the S i l ve r t i p s next play the Vancouver Giants at the Pacific Coliseum on Dec. 27. Abbotsford will still be represented at the event, with Vancouver Canucks draft pick Jake Virtanen added to the team last week. The tournament kicks off on Boxing Day, with the gold-medal game occurring on Jan. 5.
