“Ho, ho, ho, ” rejoices Robert Tarko, as he extends a white gloved hand to shoppers caught up in the holiday rush. “Merry Christmas and you have yourself a great holiday,” he says as people stop to shake hands with the man in red, and pop a few dollars into the Christmas kettle. “And thank you for helping.” Tarko is new to the city but well seasoned when it comes to playing jolly ole Saint Nick. He’s only been in Trail for little over a month, but already Tarko has dressed the part and jingled bells twice a week as the Trail Salvation Army’s newest Santa Claus. The Okanagan native brings singular gusto to the role, which he plans to fill right up until Christmas Eve. “I’m here until the 24th then I head back to the North Pole,” said Tarko, eyes twinkling behind faux Santa spectacles. “I did a lot of work with the Salvation Army in Kelowna before I moved here. They are good sponsors for so many things, so I am proud to help out here in Trail.” Seeing the instant reaction from little ones when they spot Santa is another perk of the job, says Tarko. “I love kids and kids love seeing Santa Claus, and it’s nice to see smiles on their their faces,” he shared. “And Trail people

Volunteering has long been part of his life, but Tarko says he’s always willing to do more. “It’s something I like to do, so if anyone needs a volunteer Santa,” he quipped. “Let me know, because I am not a hard guy to find.” All money raised in the kettle drive stays local and is used for Christmas hampers as well as the Salvation Army Family Services Program, housed on Rossland Avenue. Besides over 200 regular food hampers being handed up this month, an additional 330 Christmas hampers, laden with holiday goodies and new toys for children, have been assembled at the East Trail church.

After 22 years volunteering as a tour guide for the Teck Interpretive Centre, Mario Vellutini officially called it a day in December, and was honoured for his service during the local chamber’s Christmas gathering on Friday. Chamber board president Naomi McKimmie makes a presentation to Vellutini.

Mario Vellutini has met visitors from around the world during his 22 years working as a tour guide for the Teck Interpretive Centre. He’s hosted guests from Australia, New Zealand, South America, China and Japan, and the list doesn’t end there. But his most memorable tour was given to a very special lady visiting from south of the border - the granddaughter of the company’s founding father, Walter Hull Aldridge. “She was in town from Florida and wanted to see the house where her grandfather lived and family members were born,” recalled Vellutini, mentioning the home burned down years ago. “But more interesting was the movie (Teck exhibit contains historic films), she was so excited, pointing and saying, ‘that’s my grandfather’.” Vellutini has been the lon-

gest serving tour guide for the centre, which offers hands-on exhibits and videos of Teck’s metallurgical history in the City of Trail. His love for the city and respect for the company that employed him for 39 years is why he signed up following his retirement from then-Cominco in 1990. That, and the fact that Vellutini remains fluent in his first language. “They needed someone who could do the tour in Italian, so I accepted,” he said. “And I would like to emphasize I stayed in Trail l because I love it here,” Vellutini added, referring to his two children who live elsewhere in Canada. “And I will really miss being a tour guide, but my knees don’t let me do it anymore.” Alba Vellutini, says she’ll miss the company her husband often brought home to break bread and stroll through their whimsical back yard. “Mario’s a very people oriented person and he’s very

proud of Trail,” Alba said to the gathering of chamber members during his retirement party Friday evening. “He would take his clients around Trail and they would end up in our home for entertaining. “I remember him bringing a couple from Australia, showing them Miral Heights and our garden, and we gave them the recycled bags that I make (Alba weaves bags out of plastic grocery bags),” she chuckled. “So (over the years), quite a few of those went to other nations.” Vellutini enjoyed sharing all the city and the exhibit has to offer local and out-of-town guests. More importantly, he says, is the insight tourists walk away with after a visit to the Teck Interpretive Centre. “They learn that there is never a day in their lives that they don’t use a Teck product,” he said. “Everyday, we all use something that comes from

(the company).” Carol Vanelli Worosz, Teck’s community engagement leader, was unable to attend the event, but sent her best wishes in a thoughtful letter. “Tonight marks a wonderful milestone for Mario, a second retirement after many years of service at job number two,” she wrote. “Mario is the type of person that is a dedicated professional and has a strong work ethic, enjoys engaging people and sharing stories, as a proud member of the community of Trail as well as Trail Operations,” she added. “Our visitors thoroughly enjoyed Mario’s tours as evident by cards and letters they would send me expressing their heartfelt thank-yous and how wonderful Mario was,” Vanelli Worosz added. “We will miss your wisdom, experience and encouragement…we thank you for everything and for being such an amazing ambassador.”

Church and family a big part of Christmas CONTINUED FROM A1 Refugees).” Elsewhere in the Alpine City, the San-Latt family is readying to celebrate their second Christmas in Canada. Originally from Burma (Myanmar), Lun Lun, Aung Ko Ko and their toddler Samuel had been living in a refugee camp in Malaysia, when they were sponsored by the Rossland group 24 months ago. They welcomed a second son Michael David last March. “It never snows in my country, but we watched (skiing) on TV,” says Lun Lun. “My boys like snow and (this year) we will try cross country skiing.” As Christmas nears, the young mother has already decorated their home like her family did in

Burma – tinsel, angels, balloons and lights, but no tree or Saint Nick. There is no Burmese salutation for Christmas, says Lun Lun, adding with a big smile, “we just say Merry Christmas to everyone.” She is Christian and observes the day as her family did in their native country - with prayer and mass. “We would have church in the morning then walk (home) together,” she shared. “We would exchange presents, (like) shoes, clothes and hand fans, then all the people in town would cook rice and eat together.” Aung Ko Ko is Buddhist, and with a wide grin, says he enjoys Christmas because of the special currys and traditional meals prepared for the holiday.

“Homemade rice, chicken and cooking gravy curry,” Aung Ko Ko explained. “Everybody (would) come and eat, (people) walking by (are invited) in to eat. We were all happy (with all the food).” This year, Lun Lun is planning on cooking a turkey, but with a southeast Asian twist. “I am making a family dinner, and we are eating turkey,” she said. “I will cook soup, but it will be hot and spicy, that is our favourite food.” And like many Canadian households, Christmas is the San-Latt home is all about the children. “The first time I saw Santa I was so happy,” Lun Lun chuckled. “And my boys are so happy this Christmas, they see Santa and (know) they will get presents.”

Volunteers help obese dog shed more than 100 lbs.

THE C ANADIAN PRESS WINNIPEG - At the beginning of 2015, Buddy was so morbidly obese he was unable to walk. But with the help of friends who helped him cut back on the kibble, he has managed to lose more than 100 pounds this year. Now the six-year-old Australian Shepherd is fit and healthy and looking for a new home through Hull’s Haven Border Collie Rescue in Winnipeg. Officials with the rescue group say Buddy used to belong to an elderly couple who showed him their love through giving him food - way too much food. When they could no longer care for him, the couple surrendered him to the rescue group. Fearing he could have a heart attack, volunteers with Hull’s Haven helped Buddy work his way from 180 lbs. down to 71 lbs. “I just couldn’t believe the size of him. I had seen pictures and video, but it wasn’t the same,” said Angela Hand, one of Buddy’s foster parents and a vet technician at Stonewall Veterinary Clinic. “He could barely walk four or five steps without his tongue turning purple. He couldn’t walk very much.” Buddy was put on a diet of specialty food and had his treats restricted to things such as cucumbers and tomatoes. When he was finally able to start walking, things moved slowly. “There was a lot of frequent stops. He’d make it like five feet from the deck and he’d have to stop,” said Samantha Gagnon, another of Buddy’s foster parents. But each week, he would diligently weigh in at the vet, making progress in three-pound increments. A few months later, Buddy was running with other dogs. All these milestones were shared on the Facebook page, “Buddy’s 180 Story: A New Leash on Life,” where supporters from across North America cheered him on. By November, Buddy had lost enough weight to undergo skin removal surgery. “He had a big lump of skin that would hang down (his backside),” said Hand. “It caused him a lot of discomfort, even with running.” He’s close to his goal weight of 65 lbs. and is now officially up for adoption. “He’s a very cuddly dog. He likes car rides. He likes other dogs. He just doesn’t like cats,” said Hand. While Buddy’s case is extreme, pet obesity is not unusual. “In the vet clinic, I see a lot of overweight dogs,” said Hand. “A lot of times, people just don’t know what they’re feeding, how much they’re actually feeding their dog, and how much exercise they need.”

Misbehaving pets lead to lottery luck

THE C ANADIAN PRESS ST. ALBERT, Alta. - A southern Alberta couple are $14.5 million richer thanks to two mischievous dogs. Christian and Monique Etienne of Airdrie purchased the winning ticket for the Lotto 6-49 draw on Dec. 12 while getting supplies to clean up after their rescue animals. Chancey the golden lab and Kira, a German shepherd, had made a mess with a package of scone mix and the Etiennes needed to rent a carpet cleaner at a gas station. Christian discovered the win on the self-checker when he took the ticket back to a retailer a few days after the draw. His wife thought he was pulling her leg when he told her they’d hit the jackpot. The couple don’t have a lot of plans for their winnings yet, but it’s a safe bet Chancey and Kira won’t be spending much time in the doghouse.

B.C. economy has been up, down and sideways

Tis the season of lists and stocking stuffers of economic forecasts. But instead of soothsaying over what could happen in 2016, a look back at B.C.’s economic performance over the past few years might be more illuminating. Deciphering economic forecasts is a murky task anyways, not that interpreting statistics is any less risky. Consider the reaction of natural gas minister Rich Coleman to a recent report by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives: “There’s two things I don’t believe any more, polls, and anything written by the centre.” So to avoid that my stat is better than your stat taunt, automatic default to some of the B.C. government’s preferred statistical sources. Coleman shouldn’t take issue with Statistics Canada, RBC Economics or BC Stats served straight up. Particularly the latter, citizens’ services minister Amrik Virk is in charge of that one. Take a gander at the government’s economic report cards and one thing becomes readily apparent: an almost virtual absence of inter-provincial comparisons. Good reason for that, compared to Alberta, Ontario and Quebec, B.C. doesn’t always stack up so well when it comes to job creation, eco-

nomic expansion, tically stagnant. exports or investBetween 2011 and ments. 2015, it grew by 0.8 When Christy per cent or 20,200 Clark was sworn in workers. 2010 was $28.64 billion and $35.77 billion in 2014. Not bad, until you learn that it was $34.16 billion in 2005 . In 2010, B.C. was in ninth place among the provinces for international exports as a percentage of GDP with 24.9 per cent. By 2014, we moved up to eighth place, just ahead of P.E.I. and Nova Scotia. However, the value of B.C. exports fell to 22.4 per cent of GDP. In Alberta, the rate was 34.9 per cent, Ontario (33.6) and Quebec (27.7). The government’s list of potential investments – valued at $350.1 billion – reads more like a Christmas wish list than an inventory of shovel ready projects. Best to let the Business Council of B.C. handle this one: “Digging into the details and reviewing the factors behind some of the biggest proposed projects suggest that the inventory is inflated by a number of projects that ultimately may not proceed.” The Olympics would be a dull affair if medals were only awarded for personal bests. Same could be said for judging B.C.’s economic performance: provincial bests are fine, but the real test is how we perform against others. Dermod Travis is the executive director of IntegrityBC.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Child’s kindness appreciated I was walking in Trail Sunday when I was stopped by a small girl wearing a Santa hat and given a package. I did not get much chance to speak with her as she took off quickly. I saw a friend on the street who had been watching her

and she had given packages to several people. I opened my package and found a Christmas card from four-year-old Evelyn and a box full of beautifully made and decorated cookies. My wife and I were very touched by this gesture.

a number of communities on the Kootenay side of the riding, and infrastructure is certainly on the top of their lists regarding help from Ottawa. I promised them that I’ll be watching for details on this initiative as they emerge. At this time of year, it is especially important to remember those less fortunate than us. Our cold winters make conditions even more difficult for the homeless, and local food banks need your donations to ensure that no-one in this wealthy country is hungry over the holidays. I’ve been involved in a couple of recent meetings that took giant steps toward bringing groups together to house the homeless in Penticton. It was so encouraging to see the City, several churches and dedicated activists pledge to really get things done on this issue in the coming months. My staff and I will be moving in to offices in Penticton and Castlegar on December 30th, and I’ll be advertising open houses at both locations in January to welcome you all to those locations and meet my staff. In the meantime, have a Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year! Richard Cannings is the MP for the South Okanagan-West Kootenay riding

Petition against motorcycle noise growing

REGIONAL

A petition to West Kootenay local governments asking them to lobby the province to do something about noisy motorcycles now has 4,300 signatures. Meanwhile, a retired po-

lice officer from Nelson says the solution is simpler than petitions and legislation. “The police just need to take a stick, push it up the exhaust pipe, and if it goes all the way up the pipe, it is illegal,” Pat Severyn told the Regional District of Central Kootenay board.

HEALTH

It’s time to talk turkey from start to finish

INTERIOR HEALTH

For many the holiday season means a time to enjoy good company and good food. As we spread the joy of the season we need to be extra careful to not spread foodborne illness causing bacteria. These simple food safety tips will help you prepare a safe and tasty holiday meal: Store and thaw safely: Keep fresh turkey refrigerated no longer than three days before cooking. There are three ways to thaw frozen turkey in its wrapper: · Under cold running water (one hour per pound) · In a clean sink full of cold water, changing the water every couple of hours · In the fridge (five hours per pound) · Thawing poultry at room temperature is not recommended because it allows harmful bacteria to grow. · Keep other items, especially those with meat, seafood, dairy, eggs or other moist, protein-rich foods chilled until served. Clean carefully: Wash your hands, utensils and work surfaces well before prep work begins. Once the preparation work is done, clean surfaces in hot soapy water, rinse, then sanitize. Sanitizing can be done with a diluted bleach

A division of

solution (30 ml of bleach per gallon of water) that is allowed to sit for two minutes. Wash your hands well after cleaning the cutting board and before and after working with any new menu items. Avoid cross contamination: Store raw meat away from food that is ready-to-eat, including fruit and vegetables (and be sure to wash these thoroughly before serving). Turkeys should be wrapped well and stored on the lowest shelf of your fridge or in the meat keeper to keep blood and juices from contaminating other food. Ensure only clean utensils and cutting boards are used. Use a separate cutting board to prepare raw meat. Wash hands after handling any raw foods and minimize hand contact during final preparation steps. Cook well: For turkey, set the oven at no lower than 350 °F (177 °C) and cook for about 20 minutes per pound. While 20 min per pound is a guide, there are a number of factors that will determine actual cooking time needed. It is always best to use a good meat thermometer to measure the turkey’s internal temperature and ensure it’s safe to eat. All parts of the bird including stuffing should be at least 165°F (74oC) when re-

moved from the oven. Health Canada recommends an internal temperature of 185°F (85 °C) at the thickest part of the meat as additional assurance.

Check the temperature in several places to be sure. Cooked food should be kept at 140 °F (60 °C) while waiting to serve. Refrigerate: Chill

food immediately after returning from the store and soon after dinner is complete. Refrigerate at 40°F (4°C) or in a freezer at 0°F (-18 °C).

Refrigerate or freeze all poultry leftovers within two hours. Health Canada recommends refrigerating leftovers for no more than two to three days. Put them

in the freezer in order to keep them longer. Have a happy and healthy holiday! Kevin Touchet is a leader with environmental health practice

Black Jack skier on the rise JIM BAILEY

Times Sports Editor

Black Jack Ski Team’s Remi Drolet came oh-so close but just missed a berth to the Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway, at the Haywood Nor Am Nordic Youth Olympic Games Trials in Sovereign Lake last week. With only one male and one female spot for ages 15-17 from Canada available for Lillehammer, the chances of the Black Jack skier making the team were slim indeed. However, Drolet won the Classic Sprint in Canmore on Dec. 8, and was in the running, until the Rossland skier finished seventh in the classic skate distance race last week at Sovereign Lake in Vernon to place fourth overall. “I ran an alright race, but came seventh and didn’t quality,” said Drolet. “But it feels good to know that I was able to compete well against people that were older than me.” Despite finishing seventh, the 15-yearold Rossland native was the youngest in the race and fastest in his age group, competing against racers two years his senior. “He ended up winning the sprint race, which was classic, and then in the skate race, he had to go fast,” said Black Jack coach Dave Wood. “He tried and he faded a little bit in the end. But he would have had to be first or second to go for sure, and after that it gets mathematical … but for a young

guy he did quite well, we were really pleased.” Skiers results work on the FIS Qualification System, and, similar to the World Cup, the higher placing nets a significantly greater number of points. When it came to adding them up, it was Levi Nadlersmith of Downtown Nordic, Man., that qualified on the strength of firstand third-place finishes for 180 points. Still, Wood is impressed with Drolet’s results and his progress since he began racing with the Black Jack ski team just three years ago. “That winter he was undefeated,” said Wood. “Last year he started racing as a Juvenile Boy and for the most part he was undefeated.” Drolet won two gold medals at the B.C. Winter Games as a Midget racer in 2014. In his first year in Juvenile Boys, he won the B.C. Cup Series aggregate award, captured gold at the 2015 Western Canadian Nordic championship, and finished fourth at the National Championships in Thunder Bay, Ont., after fighting the flu. “His ability is very high,” said Wood. “And that will only get better, and his potential is very high, so it’s up to him and what he wants to do with it.” Drolet attends the Seven Summits Centre for Learning and showed promise at an early age. “I skied at our school with just lessons, and our teacher suggested I should join the Black Jack Ski Team,” said

Re/Max closes in on top spot

The Black Jack Ski Team’s Remi Drolet and coach Dave Wood are looking forward to a competitive season, after Drolet almost grabbed the only spot on the Youth Olympic Games team earlier this month. Drolet. “She thought I was pretty good.” It was a good call. Drolet says he likes competing, and the opportunity to travel and meet fellow skiers. “I just like going out and getting some exercise,” he added. “You meet lots of people racing, but also there is camps with athletes from all over the province that we meet with a couple times a year.” Drolet trains hard throughout the year, and benefits from mentors like Wood, the former National Team coach, and two-time Olympian George Grey.

In addition, training with experienced Black Jack competitors like David Palmer, Colin Ferrie, and Julien Locke can only be a positive for the young skier as he moves up the Nordic ranks. Black Jack’s major races this season will be the Western Canadian Nordic Ski championship in Prince George in February, and the National Championships in Whitehorse in March, and coach Wood does not lack confidence in Drolet’s ability in either race. “I expect he’ll win all

the races,” said Wood. “As long as we don’t make any boo boos and stay healthy.” As for Drolet, the young athlete is both humble and confident. “I want to see how far I can get, try as hard as I can,” said the softspoken teen. “I’m kind of hoping to medal at nationals at the end of the year, and do well at the B.C. championships.” With a first and seventh place finish against Canada’s best skiers already under his belt this year, it would seem the Black Jack skier has arrived.

BY TIMES STAFF Re/Max closed in on top spot in the Trail Commercial Hockey League standings with a win over Gericks at the Cominco Arena Sunday, while the league leading OK Tire came out flat against Allstar and Arlington last week. Graham Proulx scored twice and Kieran Hill tallied four assists for Re/Max in a 6-2 thumping of Gericks. The realtors jumped out to a 3-1 firstperiod lead on goals from Dyne Parker, Proulx, and the winner from Thomas Abenante, who also added three assists on the night. Re/Max continued to dominate the second frame getting goals from Derrick Simister, Proulx, and Riley Deadmarsh to make it 6-1. Curtis Wabelin scored both Gericks goals, while Brett Johnson added two assists. The win puts Re/ Max within two points of an OK Tire team that tied Allstar 7-7 on Sunday after falling to Arlington 6-5 on Thursday. The Tire needed a goal from Shane Drake in the final 3:50 of the third period to salvage a point against Allstar, who scored six times in the first period to take a 6-3 lead. But goals from Joel Graf, Dennis Podovennikoff, and Drake with just over four minutes to play in the second would tie it for the Tire. However, Allstar’s Tristan Reed put his team up 7-6 with 2:05 remaining in the middle frame, before Drake tied it up again. Seven different scorers lit up the scoreboard for Allstar with Derek Steep, Tim Boucher, Brady Glover, Jason Proulx, Scott Davis, Andrew Jenner, and Reed scoring while Walker Sidoni counted three assists and dad Kelly Sidoni added a pair of assists for Allstar. Allstar also beat Gericks on Thursday with a 6-4 win on the strength of a hat trick from Colton Semenok. Meanwhile, Arlington upset OK Tire with a 6-5 victory in the other Thursday match up. In a back-and-forth tilt, Joey Baker netted the winning goal with 21 seconds left on the clock to lift the Big A to its sixth win of the season. Pat Iannone scored three times and added an assist to put his league-leading point total at 53 points in 16 games. TCHL teams will resume action on Tuesday with Gericks playing Arlington at 6:15 p.m. and Re/Max facing OK Tire at 7:30 p.m. SUPER LEAGUE

Nichol tops Fines

BY TIMES CONTRIBUTOR In the spirit of the holiday season, all Kootenay Savings Super League games were scheduled for eight ends on Thursday. Team Fines and Team Myron Nichol threw caution to the wind, causing so many threes to be scored, it looked like a snowman at Christmas. Team Fines was up 6-3 after three, and was in control after forcing Nichol to take one in the fourth, but Myron bounced right back with a steal of two to tie the game. Fines made a nice takeout to get his deuce, CONTINUED ON PAGE11

before Nichol put another field goal on the board to grab his first lead of the game. Myron made a perfect tap to the four-foot with his last rock in the eighth, then watched as Fines last stone attempt at a chip for two slid by, giving Team Nichol a steal of one and a 10-8 win. Corvus Construction, skipped by Deane Horning, was in tough against a fired up Team Albo, holding a slim 4-2 lead after five. That all changed in the sixth when Horning executed a perfect long raise takeout for a game breaking three, and a handshaking 7-2 win. Team Beauchamp and Team Umpherville waged a classic (and very unRuss like) close to the vest, tight game. The game was knotted at 2-2 after five ends, as no team could manage to score more than one. Team Beauchamp managed to steal singles in the sixth and seventh to have a slight lead

coming home without, then played a perfect eighth, running Team Umpherville out of rocks for a 4-2 victory. Team Bill van Yzerloo played a complete team game against Team Heather Nichol, but could only manage a slight 4-3 lead after five ends because Skip Heather made potentially two game-changing shots. Down 2-0, and looking at three stones, Heather calmly drew to the pin for one in the second. Then facing four buried stones in the fifth, Heather made a perfect wide angle raise to tap Dutchy’s shot stone off the four foot that Bill couldn’t get to, for a five point swing and a steal of one. Undaunted, Team Van Yzerloo kept the pressure on, putting up a three spot in the sixth, then stole the seventh on their way to an 8-5 win. The Kootenay Savings Super League returns to the ice on Jan. 7.

Kauppila commits to NCAA Bentley

SUBMIT TED Jake Kauppila returned to the BCHL this season in search of a college hockey opportunity and, in helping Trail win six of their past nine games in December, good news has come his way. Bentley University in Waltham, Mass. will be the NCAA Div. I hockey home for Kauppila starting next

season. The native of Gurnee, Illinois has nine goals and 15 assists for 24 points in 36 games so far this season. LEISURE

Brother may be financially, emotionally abusing mom Dear Annie: After my dad died, my mom went to live out of state with my brother and his wife. My brother took control of everything. He convinced her that she was incapable of making her own decisions and had her open joint bank accounts that he has full access to. Recently, Mom confided that she has no idea why she can never get over a certain amount of savings in her account. She knows she should have more money put away, but fully trusts my brother and will not confront him about it. My brother has also pushed me out of my mom’s life. He will not let me visit her or allow her to come to my home. I am lucky if I get to speak with her once a day on the phone. My children miss their grandmother and can’t understand why there is such a drastic change in her behavior. Family is just not family anymore and the holidays seem sad. I don’t know what to do. My brother and his wife want nothing to do with their niece and nephew.
