Doug Hadley retired from the RCMP but continues to serve his community in so many ways, including grilling up food for the public at the Aldergrove Light-up Christmas Parade and Party last Saturday. Doug now manages a poultry farm but finds the time to serve as president of the Aldergrove Legion, as well as a contributing member of Aldergrove Rotary Club.
Fire at demolished school site By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star
A fire was set to debris left during the demolition of the Aldergrove school site on Thursday morning. At 3:09 a.m. on Dec. 17, Township fire crews responded to a call about the ‘bonfire’ at the school site at 272 Street and Fraser Highway. Three fire engines responded and Fraser Highway had to be blocked off while fire trucks accessed hydrants, said Township fire chief Stephen Gamble.
There were several locations where the fire was deliberately set, said Gamble. It didn’t take crews long to knock down the blaze. The demolition company was called in to use their machine to tear the pile apart which stopped the fire from gathering momentum, he said. The old school site was knocked down on Dec. 14 and 15. A fence has been put up around the debris and there are ‘do not enter’ signs put up.
Township of Langley Council has authorized expenditure of $280,000 for structural enhancements to the base building and footings that will allow for future construction of a canopy over the six-lane, 25-metre outdoor pool that will be built as part of the Aldergrove Recreation Centre. In late February, council will receive further information and decide whether to include the canopy in the construction project, which is to be completed in May of 2018, or to retain the option to add it on in the future. Constructing the canopy, which will feature wood laminate beams and steel columns with no walls, would cost an additional $1,574,600. “Council gave serious consideration to fully enclosing the pool and making it an indoor facility, but there are significant capital costs involved, along with even more significant operating costs,” said Mayor Jack Froese. “This facility will be used by people of all ages and interests, all year round, and will complement — not duplicate — existing Township recreation and aquatic opportunities.” Approved by Township council in June of 2015, the Aldergrove Recreation Centre will be constructed at 27032 Fraser Highway, at the site of the former Aldergrove Elementary School. Along with the outdoor pool, it will feature a two-level, 550-seat arena, fitness centre, indoor walking track, and multipurpose rooms. The outdoor water park will include waterslides, tidal pool, current channel, a children’s’ aqua structure, playground, and picnic area. An environmentally conscious project, the $26 million complex will heat the pool in the fall and winter with excess energy produced from cooling the ice. It will be home to the Aldergrove Kodiaks junior hockey team, Aldergrove Minor Hockey, the Aldergrove Figure Skating club, and an anticipated new Aldergrove Swim Club. Froese noted that the recreation centre will draw people from throughout the region to downtown Aldergrove and be a great step towards revitalizing Aldergrove’s downtown core. An update on the project was provided to council on Dec. 14 by Township staff, who noted that deconstruction of Aldergrove Elementary School is now in progress and expected to be finished in March, 2016. Food Bank gets replacement van By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star
On Wednesday morning, Sources Langley Food Bank manager Bruce Strom was preparing a group of volunteers for the weekly distribution of food and other supplies to people in need at their 200 Street location. “We have a full selection of diapers today,” Strom said, surveying the well-packed shelves. “But we’re short on potatoes.” It was the first distribution by Sources since the cube van the food bank uses to pick up donations and purchases was stolen. That happened shortly after gift cards valued at $1,000 were stolen during a break-in — cards that are used instead of cash to purchase perishable food. The van was recovered, but it suffered mechanical damage that left it un-drivable. Whoever stole it used the food bank gas card to buy $1,300 worth of diesel gas at a Clearbrook PetroCanada. About the same time, the food bank’s other, smaller van broke down and was declared too old to fix. It was looking like a bleak Christmas until word of the thefts got out. The response from the com-

Three credit unions, Aldergrove, Envision and Westminster Savings each donated $5,000.
The Purolator Courier company loaned Sources a delivery van — with a driver. The Vancouver Mercedes dealership loaned the food bank a panel van as well, going so far as to apply food bank decals to the sides. And four companies got together to replace the stolen cube van. Led by Langley real estate developer Newmark Group, along with Canadian Truck and Car Rental in Langley, Mr. Lube in Langley and Dawn Construction in Surrey, the firms purchased a one-ton cube van, which arrived at Sources on Tuesday afternoon. “I was close to tears,” Darrell said of the gift. Newmark Group President Mark Chandler said it the companies were “grateful” to be of assistance. “I know that I speak for everyone at the companies that contributed when I say that it is an honour to be able to help Sources Langley Food Bank in this small way,” Chandler said. Sources CEO David Young said the response was “incredible.” “The donation of a new truck is what we wished for, and the community came together and helped make our wish come true,” Young said.

School sings carols for food bank Aldergrove Star
The faculty and Parents Advisory Council members at North Otter Elementary wanted to give back to those who have been victimized in the recent Sources Food Bank thefts. On Tuesday, Dec. 15 from 3 to 5 p.m. they set up a post at the Otter Co-Op in Aldergrove and sold hot dogs and hot beverages, and sang Christmas carols to round up the generosity of shoppers. In two short hours they managed to raise $140 for the food bank. “Our mission this year has been to give back to our community and what better way during this holiday season than to try and make up for those who have stolen what is so valued during this time of year,” said Natalie Franklin, PAC President. “This may not see like a lot, but to the food bank, this is huge, as it means they will be able to purchase

Seniors ‘overlooked’ in throne speech: Warawa By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star
The new federal government’s brief speech from the throne should have mentioned seniors, Langley-Aldergrove Conservative MP Mark Warawa said. Warawa, the Official Opposition critic for seniors, said there was no reference to older Canadians in the 15-minute address prepared by the new Liberal government and read by Governor General David Johnston to open the new session of Parliament on Friday (Dec. 4). “I am very disappointed that the government’s speech did not once mention seniors,” Warawa said in a written statement. “The Prime Minister made many
promises to Canadian seniors, but he has not appointed a minister for seniors and does not have a plan to keep those promises.” “Right now one in six Canadians is a senior. In 14 years, one in four Canadians will be a senior. Canada needs a sustainable plan for seniors that will meet their needs. “I call on the government to present a clear plan for supporting Canadian seniors.” The Liberal government speech from the throne is considered to be one of the shortest ever at less than 2,000 words. By comparison the last speech from the throne by the previous Conservative government, in 2013, was more than 7,000 words.

A philanthropic fashion line that takes aim at bullying is becoming a sensation. The “Accept Me” logo which adorns clothing and accessories started as a kernel in Kim Radons’s mind last summer on her Aldergrove farm and has since grown to take the Grammy Awards stage in Los Angeles. “I started this brand because I firmly believe we should all be accepted for ‘who I am, how I look, whom I love, and what I believe’. Individually we desire acceptance, yet we are falling short in the reciprocation department,” says founder Kim Radons. She had been dealing with some “profoundly painful” issues around her work as a children’s advocate, “and then at the end of June it hit me, we need one platform — accepSUBMITTED PHOTO tance — and it takes care of all of that bullying, Kim Radons’s “Accept Me” T-shirt. racism, and negativity in the world.” Radons had the idea for a logo and called Network. on an artist friend in Quebec, Colleen Reich, “I found Bullying Ends Here when I was to come up with the final logo design. By DAVID CLEMENTS Aldergrove Star
Every year I look forward to taking part in a Christmas tradition involving birds — and I’m not talking turkeys. I’m talking about the Christmas bird count. Frank Chaplin would be amazed to see what he started back in 1900. Today, Christmas bird counts take place in more than 2,000 localities across the Western Hemisphere, including numerous locations in B.C. Back in 1900, there was already a popular Christmas time recreational activity involving birds — shooting them. That first year when bird enthusiast Chaplin got people interested in counting live birds instead, 27 observers took part in 15 different regions. Last Christmas, the bird count featured a record number of observers: 72,653 in total, with 62,211 of these in the field. Canadian field observers numbered 10,123, while 3,918 stayed inside and watched their feeders. The Christmas bird count is the longest running “citizen science” project around, facilitating the collection of useful scientific data by laymen observers. To take part in the Christmas bird count, you don’t have to be scientifically trained — you just need enthusiasm and some ability to identify birds. Having long-term information on bird occurrence is very helpful for monitoring any changes that occur due to habitat loss, climate change or pollution. It’s keeping tabs on the “canary in the coal mine.” Each location consists of a 24-km diameter circle. Organizers meet up with participants early in the morning and then teams fan out to different zones within the circle. At the end of the day, the birders usually meet over a meal and report their sightings. If you have an interest in birds, it’s a great opportunity to hone your identification skills. Novices are put in teams led by long-time birders and I have found it has been a great way to learn my birds better. It’s also exciting to explore the various parks and other natural areas in our region, knowing that just around the next corner there might be a bird that no other group has found that day. Response filed in lawsuit against sex offender By VIKKI HOPES Aldergrove Star
The defendants in a civil suit launched by the city to have sex offender James Conway moved from his current residence say the home is being operated within the permitted zoning designation for the area. The company WJS (W.J. Stelmaschuk and Associates) and caregiver Ed Holroyd are asking for the lawsuit to be dismissed. Their response was filed Nov. 25 in B.C. Supreme Court. The City of Abbotsford filed a civil claim against the defendants, including property owner Brian Vos, early last month, saying that the home on Joanita Place – located in the Bradner area – is being operated in contravention of the “Agricultural One” zoning for the
neighbourhood. Living there are Conway – with a history of sexual offences against children – and another offender, along with their supervisor, Holroyd, an independent contractor working through WJS. WJS is a service provider of Community Living BC (CLBC), which funds support services for adults with developmental disabilities and their families. The court documents state that WJS leased the property from Vos, sublet the property to Holroyd, and signed a contract with CLBC. Neighbours in the area have held rallies to protest Conway’s presence, started a Facebook page with their concerns, and pleaded with city officials to move him. Mayor Henry Braun said in September that because the resi-
dence was operating as a “commercial use,” it was in contravention of zoning bylaws, which permit only agricultural and residential uses. The city then notified the defendants of the city’s position and asked that the tenants be moved, but they are continuing to reside in the home while the legal matter is settled. The defendants say their use of the home fits into the permitted “single dwelling unit” use under the zoning bylaw, which is defined as “one or more habitable rooms designed, occupied or intended for occupancy … as an independent and spate residence in which cooking, sleeping and sanitary facilities are provided …” Conway, 40, who has developmental disabilities, moved into the home at the beginning of August.

The Abbotsford Police Department’s (APD) latest holiday greeting to crooks shows Santa – Chief Bob Rich – wishing for a washboard stomach with the message, “Christmas is a time for reflection.” The cards come complete with a small mirror and a further message that states, “What do you see in the mirror? Is it time to make a change?” This is the fourth year the APD has sent out Christmas cards to criminals and troublemakers, with the idea that they consider changing their lifestyle. Const. Ian MacDonald said 108 such cards have been mailed out this year, with a focus on problem and prolific property offenders and those involved in the Townline Hill gang conflict, which has seen two groups of young men in a violent battle for drug turf. MacDonald said the cards are sent out to encourage people who have made poor choices “to reflect on those decisions,” “to look in the

Kodiaks on hot 4-game winning streak By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star
The Aldergrove Kodiaks extended their current win streak to four with a 9-3 score over the Langley Knights, Dec. 17 at George Preston Arena. The Kodiaks outshot the Steelers 39-31 and Davitt and Versluis were the game’s first and second stars, respectively. CHRISTMAS BREAK The Kodiaks now take a Christmas holiday before returning for the remainder of the season in the new year. The Aldergrove Skating club hosted the yearly Jingle Blades 2015 skating competition November 19 to 22 at the Aldergrove Arena. Six hundred skaters from all over B.C. came to compete in 78 events. The home club skaters had a very successful weekend with many Golds, Silver and Bronzes won. For some this was their first competition with awesome results. The skating club would like to thank all its members and the Aldergrove community for supporting this huge endeavour with volunteering and donations. Without this support the club would not have been able to put on such a spectacular event. The Aldergrove Skating Club synchronized skating teams are now preparing for competition season.

the team to pick up a much deserved point. Currently, the TBirds are sitting in the middle of the division with a respectable record of 10-8-6 for 26 points, and are looking forward to next weekend’s games before the Christmas break. They play the
Vancouver NE Chiefs, who are only three points up on the TBirds in this very tight division. Game days on Sunday, Dec. 20, 9:45 a.m. at the Poirier Sports & Leisure Center in Coquitlam, before returning home on Monday evening, Dec. 21, 8:15 p.m. at the Abbotsford Rec. Centre.
