Santa and Mrs. Claus rode their sleigh into Deadwood Junction last Thursday afternoon to greet students from Greenwood and Midway elementary schools. The setting was ideal for such a nostalgic scene; the Gold Rush flavour of the popular cafe and gallery proved a magical backdrop for Santa’s visit, leaving kids and adults alike looking forward to Christmas. The Kettle River Lion’s Club distributed 93 boxes of food on Saturday during their annual Christmas hamper drive, which has been part of the club’s mandate for more than a quarter century. The total cost of the food, distributed throughout the West Boundary, was $7500, 25 per cent less than the previous year, due to substantial savings made possible by the generosity of Osoyoos’ AG Foods, which sold the Lions groceries at wholesale prices. There were also significant donations made at various locations throughout the area, helping make the hamper drive another great success. Also pitching in was Greenwood’s Board of Trade, members of which delivered numerous hampers to people in that city. The Lion’s Club would like to offer their heart-
felt thanks to all of those individuals and businesses that donated money and goods to this year’s hamper drive, though hope to see the number of recipients drop in 2016 as people’s financial situations improve. The West Boundary Food Bank also played a significant role in ensuring those in need were provided enough groceries for three square meals on Christmas Day. Working out of the Evangel Chapel in Greenwood, Food bank directors Gerry Schuler and Karen Lehmann prepared dozens of food boxes, picked up by mostly local residents. Lehmann stressed the ongoing need for food donations by the public and hopes to see their newly-organized storage area full come the new year. The West Boundary Food Bank is located at 401 North Kimberly in Greenwood.

By any other name The debate over the steady decline in the use of the salutation “Merry Christmas”, replaced largely by “Happy Holidays”, has led many to conclude that the latter greeting is simply, politically-correct and inclusive, making it considerably more appropriate in this increasingly diverse society. Others, however, view this growing trend of dropping “Merry Christmas” from our Yuletide vocabulary not so much a result of political correctness, but more so another reflection of the rampant Capitalism that drives much of the population into a shopping frenzy every December. Could it be that retailers, concerned about the financial consequences of offending potential customers by wishing them happiness during a Christian festival, were devious enough to drop the Christmas reference from their advertising in lieu of the non-denominational “Happy Holidays?” Was it their intent to pull non-Christian shoppers into the commercial vortex that the season has become? The concept is devilish, to be sure, but regardless of its root, it appears to have worked, with increasing numbers of non-Christians, including Muslims, buying into the Christmas season and the traditions it embraces. It is accurate to say that years ago, many smart retailers decided that Christmas was something to be exploited for commercial gain in as many ways as possible, as they coolly set out to exploit the celebration through Christmas products, Christmas decorations, Christmas sales, and Christmas advertising, not to mention Christmas music in stores starting in late November. And, outside of retail, many businesses, of all types, decided that sending Christmas cards to their long lists of customers would ultimately be good for business. It would surely be bad for business, however, if non-Christian customers felt excluded from the party, leading many commercial interests to make a small effort to be inclusive and keep everybody happy and willing to spend. Thus “Merry Christmas” became “Happy Holidays.” It’s just an effort to be a little more inclusive. It’s not personal. It’s not political. It’s just business. Oh well, Merry Holidays West Boundary!

Post-fire review: not all needs met Submitted
On August 13, 2015, a wildfire raced through the Rock Creek/Westbridge area destroying trees, crops, houses, outbuildings, tools, firewood and other things. The major damage to residents was in the Westbridge area. A number of volunteer organizations working together assisted local residents dealing with this emergency. Not all needs have yet been met. Some of the highlights of meeting immediate needs as a result of this disaster over the last four to five months were: Clean-up of Burnt Houses and Outbuildings
Immediately after the fire, Samaritan’s Purse volunteers cleaned up a number of burnt houses and outbuildings by piling the metal into one pile and the other burnt rubble into a second pile. These volunteers also sifted through the debris to retrieve possessions such as jewelry, porcelain, etc. This was very therapeutic and meant a lot to the people affected by the fire. With the assistance of the Regional Director, the Unmet Needs Committee (initially organized by Vicki Gee – Director, Area ‘E’ under the guidance of the Canadian Red Cross), the Canadian Red Cross and ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Association) Canada, arrangements were made to have the metal and burnt rubble removed from the burnt houses and outbuildings at no cost to owners that either had no fire insurance or were under insured. As of the beginning of December, that work has basically been completed. Thanks go to the Regional District for opening the Greenwood landfill site some addi-

tional days to accept delivery of burnt rubble and the waving of the drop fees when receiving the burnt rubble from these burnt houses and outbuildings. Also thanks go to the local contractors that collected all this burnt scrap metal. Firewood In September, with the assistance of the Unmet Needs Committee, the Canadian Red Cross, logging truck drivers and contractors, volunteers and the Westbridge Recreation Society; firewood logs were delivered to the Westbridge Community Hall, cut and delivered to those identified needing firewood. About 35 volunteers helped cut and delivered this firewood. The Westbridge Recreation Society provided space for delivering logs as well as lunches for the volunteers that cut and delivered the firewood. Burnt Tools and Tires Through the efforts of the Unmet Needs Committee, a number of families who had their tools and/or car tires burnt had some of these items replaced. There is still a need of other common every day tools. Replacing Outbuildings During October and November as a result of the work and resources of the Unmet Needs Committee, donors of building supplies, the Kettle River Lions, the Canadian Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, the Mennonite Disaster Services, the Westbridge Women’s Institute, the Westbridge Recreation Society and scores of volunteers; many outbuildings destroyed by the fire were replaced.

Did you know? Leaving cookies and milk for Santa Claus is a Christmas Eve tradition. Children regularly place a dish of cookies and a glass of milk by the tree on Christmas Eve so that Santa has enough energy to complete all of his gift-giving before kids wake up on Christmas morning. The tradition of leaving cookies out on Christmas Eve may trace its origins to Saint Nicholas. On the feast of St. Nicholas on December 6, children would leave food and drink for the saint and any attendants.
Original artwork by Brandi, Boundary Central Secondary School
The treats would be exchanged for gifts. While that’s one theory behind the tradition, others think it is linked to the history of the Christmas tree and the edible decorations that adorn it. Santa would snack on the ornaments. Even after edible decorations gave way to inedible ornaments, the tradition of leaving a snack for Santa remained. Whatever the origins behind the tradition, millions of children dutifully leave milk and cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve.

Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year! From MLA Linda Larson & Staff
Exploring the colours of Christmas The colors red, green, gold, and silver are prominent during the holiday season, when they can be seen on everything from gift wrap to decorations. Decorations adorning homes and businesses in the familiar colors of red and green are popular come the holiday season. Even gift wrap, greeting cards and clothing tend to lean toward red and green as the holiday season hits full swing. It is difficult to think of Christmas without envisioning everything awash in these popular colors, broken up only by the inclusion of gold, white or silver accents. The colors of Christmas are often taken for granted, and many celebrants are unaware of how these colors became symbols of the holiday season and why they remain so to this day. Several theories exist as to why red and green became the hallmarks of Christmas. One such theory is that the colors evolved from pagan celebrations similar to the evolution of Christmas traditions. Prior to the arrival of Christianity, many cultures viewed the color green as the symbol of life . It is believed that, during harsh winters, evergreen trees were cut down and brought indoors to symbolize that life still exists and thrives despite the cold and darkness of winter. Other pagan holidays featured the use of green, red and gold, including the festival of Yule. As Christianity spread across Europe and eventually other parts of the world, red and green were linked to Jesus Christ. Green still represented life, but now this was the eternal life offered by Christ. Red was said to symbolize sacrifice, namely the blood of Jesus when he died on the cross. Some Christians believe that Jesus wore a crown of holly thorns whose berries were originally white. As Jesus’ blood touched the berries, they turned red. Some theorize that the red of the holiday season represents the apples on the tree of paradise in the Garden of Eden. Around the 14th cen-

tury, the faithful would put on Paradise Plays on December 24 to share the story of creation with those who could not read. It is nearly impossible to find a fruit-bearing apple tree in the winter, so a pine tree adorned with red apples was used instead. Bishops also wore red robes, further tying the color red to religious masses and celebrations. Gold is frequently used in holiday decorations as well. Gold can represent the sun and light, both important ways to ward off the dark winter. In addition, gold was one of the gifts brought to baby Jesus, making it a color of significance within the Christian faith. Red and green poinsettias also are a symbol of the holiday season, but they didn’t start the colorful tradition. Poinsettias are a relatively recent addition to Christmas symbolism, as they were only first introduced to America in 1828, when they were brought back from Mexico by Joel Poinsett. The holiday season is filled with many different colors that brighten up homes and businesses. Combined with the many twinkling lights used on displays, red and green decorations can add vitality to the dark days of December.

Holly and mistletoe are symbols of Christmas
Whether faux or fresh mistletoe, a bouquet of this plant symbolizes peace and tranquility for Christmas. “Oh, by gosh, by golly it’s time for mistletoe and holly. Tasty pheasants, Christmas presents, countrysides covered in snow.” As exemplified by this holiday hit by Henry Sanicola, Frank Sinatra and Dok Stanford, holly and mistletoe are an integral part of holiday imagery and tradition. Holly is used to adorn a home in green and red finery alongside evergreen boughs and wreaths. In addition, it has become customary to hang a bouquet of mistletoe under which people are encouraged to share a holiday kiss. While these elements of celebrations are now incorporated into many of the secular and religious components of Christmas, they have very different origins.
Holly
Holly has been used since the days of the early Pagans as a decoration for midwinter festivities, when it was brought into homes to keep evil spirits
away. The ancient Romans also believed that holly prickles drove away evil spirits, and it held a place of honor at December festivals dedicated to the god Saturn. To avoid persecution during the Roman pagan Saturnalia festival, early Christians would participate in the tradition of hanging evil-repelling holly on their homes to appear like the masses. Eventually as the number of Christians grew, the tradition became less of a pagan one and more associated with Christians and Christmas. Some people have inferred that holly and its prickly edges is symbolic of the crown of thorns Jesus wore at his crucifixion, with the red berries representing blood.
Mistletoe
Mistletoe was once held sacred by the Norse, Celtic Druids and North American Indians. It is actually a parasitic plant that grows on a wide range of host trees. Heavy infestation can dwarf the growth and kill these trees. In cultures across pre-Christian Europe, mistletoe was seen as a representation of divine male essence (and thus romance, fertil-
ity and vitality). The plant also was thought to be a symbol of peace, and anyone standing below it should receive tokens of affection. When enemies met beneath mistletoe, they had to lay down their weapons and observe a truce until the next day. This is how the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe likely began, and why a ball of mistletoe is now hung in homes during Christmas, a season of peace and affection. Homeowners who hang mistletoe and holly around their homes during the holiday season should be mindful of pets and youngsters around the plants. Mistletoe and holly are considered to be moderately to severely toxic, and ingesting the leaves could be dangerous. Therefore, keep these plants away from curious hands. Mistletoe is commonly hung up high, which should make it less problematic, but holly should be hung high as well. Now largely associated with Christmas celebrations, holly and mistletoe were once part of pagan rituals and ancient superstitions.
The history behind some beloved Christmas songs
Holiday traditions vary from family to family, but one component of the holidays that seems to be universally enjoyed is a good Christmas song. Music is piped throughout malls and stores to entertain shoppers, and favorite tunes may be on the radio or streamed through a digital music service as families decorate their homes. Many people may love Christmas songs and carols, but not everyone shares the same favorites. Thankfully, there’s no shortage of material when it comes to Christmas songs, ensuring there’s something for everyone. In 2014, Time magazine researched records at the U.S. Copyright Office to determine the most popular and most recorded Christmas songs since 1978. when copyright registrations were digitized. The following are some of the more beloved holiday tunes and a bit of history about each song. · “Silent Night”: One of the most rerecorded songs in history (733 versions since 1978), “Silent Night,” was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber and put to lyrics by Joseph Mohr. It was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a village in Austria. Today’s version is a slow lullaby, but it’s believed the original was a dance-like tune in 6/8 time. · “O Holy Night”: This popular song was composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847 to a French poem titled, “Minuit, chre^atiens (Midnight, Christians).” Many notable performers, including Perry Como, Celine Dion, Josh Groban,

His prediction was correct, especially after singer Bing Crosby recorded it. · “Jingle Bells”: Although it has become one of the more popular Christmas songs, “Jingle Bells” really was written for Thanksgiving. It’s also one of the oldest holiday songs of American origin. James Lord Pierpont, the song’s author, was inspired by the famous sleigh races of Medford, Massachusetts. · “Do You Hear What I Hear”: Noel Regney wrote this song as a call to peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The original context has long been forgotten, and “Do You Hear What I Hear” is now a staple of holiday celebrations. · “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”: James Gillespie wrote Thank you for your support! this tune while riding a subway and reminiscing about his Merry Christmas & Happy New childhood with his brother. As a resident of the Westbridge community and vice-president of the Westbridge Recreation Society, I/we would like to extend our many thanks to everyone that have contributed and/or helped in the rebuilding of our community. The list of participants and businesses is extensive and almost impossible to capture everyone’s involvement. First off, one must recognize the lead role that our Kootenay Boundary Area E/West Boundary regional director Vicki Gee has taken in organizing the many facets in which she has been involved in this recovery process. The initial first responders were the fire departments from Midway, Greenwood, Beaverdell, Big White, Grand Forks and the Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue. During and after the main fire, BC Forestry worked endless hours in the fire suppression and containment. Their cooperation was phenomenal. FortisBC and Telus were immediately on the scene and worked endless hours to restore our vital services. Donations of all sorts of items from household items to clothing and food poured in from all parts of the Interior. Westbridge Hall and Thrift Shop had to acquire additional storage, donated by the Big
Steel Box Co., to handle all the items which are still being received to this date. Communities such as Greenwood, Midway and Osoyoos have made major financial contributions. Early in the program, we had charitable organizations and local businesses start the cleanup of all the burned debris and scrap materials left from the fire, followed immediately by the organization of the donations, delivery, cutting and distribution of three logging truck loads of logs used to replace all the winter firewood lost during the fire. An “Unmet Needs Committee” was established by Vicki Gee where a group of representatives from the communities, the Red Cross, the Lions Club, Habitat for Humanity and local resources was put together to document and prioritize those who had lost their homes and related buildings etc. and coordinate donations of cash equitably. This committee also authorized a program where a large group of volunteers started to replace sheds and animal shelters. A major part of this program was assisted by the donation of building modules by the owners/management of Mt. Baldy Ski Resort and insulation from Roxul Insulation—five buildings have been completed with two more in progress and possibly another five in the planning.
This is not a learn to ski program, but rather, a learn to ski better in all terrain and conditions program. Lessons are taught by certified coaches and follow the seven-step Snow Star program sponsored by BC Alpine. League Requirements: Skiers ages 4 - 13 • Ride T-bar unassisted • Ski on their own • Wear helmet (shell must cover ears and temples)
Phoenix Mountain
Racers and All Mountain Ski Program 2016
All ages of excellent volunteers from as far as Lake Country, Grand Forks, Beaverdell, Carmi, Midway, Bridesville and Rock Creek have participated in the construction of these buildings. To facilitate this program, the generous uses of the Westbridge Community Hall facilities were made available. The Main River Women’s Institute and members of the Westbridge Recreation Society organized meals for the volunteers seating as many as 15 hard workers for lunch. Additionally the committee has arranged for trauma counselling services donated by Vlodko Barchuk at the Westbridge Community Hall as requested. All these activities still go on today and will in the new year with the replacement of a home organized by the Habitat for Humanity and many other items such as trees from Hansinger Nurseries, assistance from the Red Cross and the Lions Club, etc. All we can say is a great big thanks to everyone that has volunteered or contributed in many, many ways to help the rebuild of the Westbridge and Rock Creek Communities in the wake of this devastating event. Greenwood Elementary gives
Greenwood Elementary School students held an “entrepreneur market” following their Christmas concert last Wednesday evening, and the sale of a variety of handmade products raised over $600. The children learned much about the role of entrepreneurs and their much-needed innovations while they prepared goods for the market. Proceeds were split between the West Boundary Food Bank and the Greenwood Public Pool.

Woodstove exchange CRAIG LINDSAY
Boundary Creek Times Contributor
Pending final approval from the RDKB board, the Woodstove Exchange Program will be returning to the Kootenay Boundary area early next year. The program, which is province-wide, allows resident to exchange their old uncertified polluting stove for a new clean-burning EPA approved stove. “It will need approval by the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary at their next board meeting, which is probably mid-January,” said John Vere, program coordinator. “We’ll have money for 22 woodstove exchanges. The prospective start would likely be in February and it would run to late spring.” Vere said the program allows residents to change their old woodstoves for a pellet, gas or propane-fired heater as well as for the EPA approved stove. Fireplace insert and wood furnances may also qualify under certain conditions. “The idea is to get rid of all the old woodstoves in which all the pollu-
tion goes straight up the chimney,” he said. “Modern stoves have recombustion systems or catalytic systems so it burns off the extra pollution and lowers the emissions substantially. You get a lot more mileage out of your firewood too because of the recombustion.” Once the regional district approvs the program, residents can apply by filling out the form on Vere’s website cactusmusic. com (click on woodstove exchange button) or by clicking on the link on the RDKB website (rdkb.ca). (Left) The Heritage Credit Union in Greenwood brought in a professional photographer on Friday to capture kids (and some adults) enjoying a visit with a very busy Santa Claus. This is the first year the Credit Union has done this, though expects it to become a very popular annual event.
(Right) Greenwood mayor Ed Smith got into the action as well, and was overheard telling Santa that he was hoping for a slightly calmer year in office in 2016.
The Heritage Credit Union welcomed Santa to its Greenwood branch on Friday as a special treat for the bank’s youngest clients. Also on hand was photographer and Heritage Human Resources Manager Ian Laroque, who snapped dozens of photos of both big and little kids enjoying a visit with the bearded one. In a gesture typical of manager Donna Durban and her staff, along with Larocque, Heritage provided, free of charge, one 5x7 print and a gift for each child that dropped by during the inaugaral “photo with Santa” day, which is certain to become a popular annual event.
