$600,000 to engage public ANDREA KLASSEN
STAFF REPORTER
andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
November’s budget meetings may have attracted only a handful of Kamloopsians, but city staff say the number of residents they have reached this year — and the number of dollars spent to do so — are up. Public-engagement activities cost the city more than $600,000 in 2015, according to a report to city council. In 2014, the city spent about $150,000. Both figures include staff time spent on outreach projects. Businesses and client services manager Tammy Robertson said two projects accounted for more than half the costs: The months-long rehabilitation of Overlanders Bridge and the performing-arts centre referendum, the $160,000 budget of which is considered public consultation. Overlanders outreach, which included multiple webcams, weekly online reports to the public and a trio of open houses, cost another $150,000. Robertson said more than 20,000 participants took part in outreach activities in 2015. That number does not include the 22,294 votes in the Nov. 14 arts-centre referendum or 12,000 school children who received presentations from the city on sustainability. By comparison, the city counted 4,699 participants in 2014. The number of public-engagement activities was also up, to 307 in 2015 from 186 in 2014. Robertson said open houses at which the city was able to add a “fun factor,” such as food demonstrations linked to this year’s urban-agricultural consultations, were more popular with the public. While budget meetings didn’t have that same draw, Robertson said she has spoken with colleagues in other cities across the country who report they also can’t seem to get the public out to their meetings. “That is the anomaly for most communicators in government,” she said, adding the city is looking for ways to make budget meetings more appealing in 2016. “And to ask those folks who aren’t coming out, who don’t feel engaged, what would it take?”

rom the windows of the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice, patients look out over rolling hills, walking paths and the river valley below. It’s a view George Betts remembers being struck by during the eight days in May his wife, Frances, spent at the hospice. And, as he began thinking of a way to thank staff and volunteers for their care, the view helped provide a solution. “We had such wonderful care in May when my wife passed away,” he said. He has donated a telescope and binoculars to the hospice, both in memory of Frances. “We just thought it would be nice for the residents and people here to sit and look at the stars at night as something to do,” Betts said. The binoculars could be used to look at wildlife during the days, he said, or satellites the telescope is too powerful to pick up at night. Betts remembers sharing the view with
Frances before she died, wheeling her bed to an outdoor patio in the hospice’s garden to watch the goings-on in Peterson Creek Park below. Hospice executive director Wendy Marlow said the scenery has struck many patients and their families. “It is amazing what you can see,” she said. “You look down in the park and sometimes you’ll see something on the pathway. We’ve had deer, we’ve had bears.” Marlow said Betts’ donation, also made on behalf of his six children, could provide visitors at the hospice with some comfort. “When people are here and they want to stay with their loved one, they’re here a lot of time,” she said. “Sometimes it’s just nice to have something else to do for a little while. It’s a real peaceful thing to be able to look out at the night sky.” The Betts family has another connection to the hospice. In the 1970s, Frances was a homecare worker for its namesake, Marjorie Snowden. “She was very proud of that,” Betts said. He remembers his wife of nearly 59 years as a woman who loved to have fun.

12 Days of Christmas
The Kamloops Hospice Association is hoping to raise enough money to fund 12 of its patient rooms for 12 days. Its 12 Days of Christmas campaign has the goal of raising $29,540 — the equivalent of the $205 it costs to operate one of its rooms for one day. For every $205 raised, hospice staff will light a bulb on its Christmas tree, with hopes of seeing all 144 glowing brightly. People can participate by visiting the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel on St. Paul Street and donating $2 in its Christmas tree competition for the hospice entry. The restaurant will also donate 20 per cent of a bill from its Citrus restaurant to the hospice at the diners; request. Direct donations can be made to the hospice online at kamloopshospice.com, at the facility at 72 South Whiteshield Cres. or by calling 250372-1336.

The best way to reduce our garbage this holiday season is not to create it in the first place. Going straight a dilemma for Russell TIM PETRUK
STAFF REPORTER
tim@kamloopsthisweek.com
A man once described by police as the leader of a Kamloops gang has been released from jail after parole slip-ups and a domestic assault landed him back behind bars. Jayme Russell, now 34, was in 2009 handed a seven-year sentence in a federal penitentiary after being convicted on four drug-dealing charges. At the time of his arrest, Kamloops Mounties called Russell the leader of the Kamloops chapter
of the Independent Soldiers street gang. Russell was the target of an undercover RCMP investigation in 2006 and 2007. While unknowingly dealing with an undercover Mountie, Russell arranged for the sale of three kilograms of cocaine, 50 handguns and three machine guns. When he was arrested, he was in possession of handcuffs and body armour. While on bail prior to his 2008 trial, Russell committed three further drug offences, to which he pleaded guilty. Russell was granted
statutory release — mandated monitored release into the community after offenders serve two-thirds of a federal sentence — in July 2013. In October 2014, he was taken back into custody after parole officers found he was in possession of two cellphones — a violation of his release conditions. He was released again the following month. In February, after parole officials received word of potential domestic violence in Russell’s relationship with his long-term girlfriend, a meet-
ing was arranged between Russell, his girlfriend, a parole officer and police. The meeting was to take place at Russell’s rural Abbotsford home. “While awaiting your spouse in your home — which is in a remote location — for the meeting, an individual ran up the stairs and knocked on your glass door,” states a Parole Board of Canada document obtained by KTW. “Your parole supervisor found you to appear nervous, uncomfortable and stressed. You spoke to the individual on the
deck, out of earshot of your parole officer and the accompanying RCMP officer.” The individual turned out to be a known criminal from Kamloops, the document states. Russell’s girlfriend was a no-show for the meeting. He was taken back into custody on Feb. 13. The following month, he was charged with four domestic-violence charges — assault with a weapon, uttering threats, assault and assault causing bodily harm. In Abbotsford provincial court last week,
JAYME RUSSELL
Russell was convicted of domestic assault and placed on a two-year probation term. He was released from prison last Wednesday after having served two-thirds of the remainder of his sevenyear sentence, which will end in May.
Russell had no criminal record prior to his conviction in January 2009, but faced two serious charges the previous year. In February 2008, he was acquitted on an aggravated assault charge after a number of witnesses refused to testify against him. Three months later, he had attempted murder charges stayed after his alleged victim, another man believed to be involved with gangs, claimed to have no idea what had happened — despite testimony from police witnesses stating otherwise.

the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been denied bail following his arrest last week. Crown prosecutor Susan Mengering said the teen pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in October. The charge stemmed from an incident in January 2013 in Hixon, 60 kilometres south of Prince George. Mengering said the teen was told by a group of friends that they were going to set up two men — one of whom had allegedly committed a previous sex crime — for beatings at a Hixon hotel.
“[He]replied back to them saying he wanted in on it and not to do anything until he got there,” Mengering said. Mengering said the teen, then 14, showed up at the hotel and took part in an attack on one of the men. “[He] sodomized [the victim] with the handle of a mop,” she said, noting other people also beat the man with a frying pan and kicked him in the head. The teen had been free on release conditions since Jan. 30, 2013, despite breaching his bail twice
since then. In addition to aggravated assault, court heard he was initially charged with additional counts of aggravated sexual assault and unlawful confinement — charges that were withdrawn in exchange for a guilty plea. On Dec. 9, Mengering said, social workers visited the Valleyview home the teen had been living in with his grandmother. Mengering said they searched his bedroom and found four bongs, lighters, torches and
two knives. He was taken into custody days later. According to Mengering, the teen will likely receive a sentence in the range of six months in custody. “If [he] were to be released, it would bring the administration of justice into disrepute,” she said. “A reasonable person would be shocked.” The teen was ordered to remain behind bars. He is due to be sentenced in a Prince George courtroom on Feb. 24.

A Kamloops-area teenager facing sexrelated charges after a series of incidents involving a classmate has been acquitted because his alleged victim sent him nude photos and suggestive text messages. The accused was 14 at the time of the incidents. His alleged victim was a 15-year-old girl who lived next door. Court heard the incidents took place between May and September of 2014. The first was a sexual encounter between the two on an outdoor basketball court during spring break. The second incident took place at the accused’s home after the alleged victim had been babysitting his siblings. The third incident took place in a classroom in front of more than a dozen students. The accused claimed the encounters were consensual. Kamloops provincial court Judge Roy Dickey agreed, saying he was troubled by the girl’s actions over the same time period. “She agreed she sent a nude photo to [the accused] and asked him what he thought,” Dickey said. That picture was followed with a message stating: “Just wondering if you would still touch me in school,” followed by what Dickey described as “a blushy face emoticon.” Dickey said he had no choice but to acquit the teen. “I find most troubling the messages and the photographs she [the alleged victim] sent and their timing,” he said.

e can “tweet” about our lives using Twitter and “poke” someone or send them useless virtual gifts on Facebook. We can shop around the clock on hundreds of websites and — if we’re feeling generous — donate to good causes online at any time of day or night. There is no need to sleep if connecting is what we’re all about in this wired, 24/7 world. We can Skype someone to speak to them no matter where they are. Our cellphones make sure we never have a moment’s peace and, if we’re not talking, we’re texting, jotting down the details of our lives in sprinklings of characters. We can upload videos about ourselves and our favourite pets — and our cute kitties can become online stars in just a few days. We can blog about current events ad nauseam and gain “fans” the world over. Yes, it’s easy to be connected. It’s easy to be in the know. But, what do we know, really, and is being connected all that it’s cracked up to be? Those are questions to ponder this Christmas season when — after all the gifts have been torn open and all the goodies have been consumed — there is nothing else to do. There are other things to do that don’t involve buying and busyness and overindulging: Take a walk. Talk to someone you care about. Heck, take a nap. If you need some inspiration, here are some famous words on Christmas: • Norman Vincent Peale: “Christmas waves a magic wand over this world and behold — everything is softer and more beautiful.” • Dr. Seuss: “Maybe Christmas, the Grinch thought, doesn’t come from a store.” • Charles Schulz: “Christmas is doing a little something extra for someone.” • Charlotte Carpenter: “Remember, if Christmas isn’t found in your heart, you won’t find it under a tree.”

So this is Christmas . . .
T
he B.C. Poverty Reduction Coalition is one of the most important organizations in the province — and its message this month is one we should all consider. Written by Trish Garner and Bill Hopwood, it points out that, on Dec. 4, the CBC’s annual Food Bank Day in the province raised $630,314. Considering estimates are 100,086 British Columbians rely on food banks, it works out to $6.30 per person. This is not to criticize the charitable acts of everyone who donated, but to point out charity simply doesn’t make a fundamental impact on the root causes of social issues. The pair continues to quote Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, the province’s representative for children and youth. One of the many vital things Turpel-Lafond tells us is we need to not just “feed our neighbour’s children, but really understand why is it that their parents are not able to feed them. What is causing the degree of poverty that we’re experiencing?” Garner and Hopwood point out the basic truth: Donating to food banks isn’t solving hunger. The CBC has been holding its Food Bank Day for 29 years. The number of people relying on these agencies for help — be it monthly or sporadically when paycheques can’t cover the costs of living — con-

LEVEL tinues to rise. They advocate we stop looking at poverty through the lens of charity and see it as a human-rights issue, something enshrined in the UN’s International Covenant of Economic and Social and Cultural Rights — which Canada signed in 1976 — that recognizes “the right of everyone to an adequate standard of living for himself and his family, including adequate food, clothing and housing and to the continuous improvement of living conditions.” The article goes on to point out one in 10 British Columbians live in poverty and that our province is the only one in Canada with no poverty-reduction plan. In fact, we have a premier who seems to feel any forward step to help those who need it the most should be tied to the economy and her zealous belief that growing our liquefied natural-gas sector will solve all ills. It won’t.
On Dec. 25, we’ll celebrate Christmas. For many families, it will be a day of excess. The tree will be surrounded by gifts, the stockings stuffed full, an oversized turkey will be cooked and there will be more food than most any other night For many, we’ll finish off the season lining up for bargains on Boxing Day. Others will celebrate quieter, with less, and so many others will be relying on the food bank and other agencies to have any kind of Christmas at all. When all that is done and we’re about to enter a new year, let’s make one resolution that shouldn’t be a challenge. Let’s resolve to advocate for a real poverty-reduction plan with real targets and timelines, as the coalition promotes, so we can truly make a difference. A few weeks ago, a colleague asked me to provide my two favourite Christmas carols. The first one is Fairytale of New York, with that great Celtic punk band, The Pogues, singing of ruined dreams. The second is So This is Christmas, in which John Lennon wrote quite simply and powerfully: “And so this is Christmas, for weak and for strong. For rich and the poor ones, the world is so wrong.” Let’s do what we can to try and make the world a little bit more right. dale@kamloopsthisweek.com Twitter: @mdalebass

I
f owner Tom Gaglardi had a nickel for every fan who jumped off the Kamloops Blazers’ bandwagon after the team’s dismal 0-6 start, he could build a new Moxie’s. They’re trickling back into Sandman Centre now, though, Blue and Orange scarves on, overpriced poutines in hand, pretending they never left. You can’t blame those who gave up for having that “here-we-go-again” attitude because there were people inside the organization — players, coaches and staff — who, if they were to answer honestly, were feeling the same way. The difference between the fickle fans who flew the Blazer coup and the players, coaches, staff and die-hard supporters is pretty simple: They never threw in the towel. It would be easy to pinpoint Oct. 13 as the day everything changed. General manager Craig Bonner resigned and Stu MacGregor took over. Kamloops (17-11-3-1) has won 17 of 26 games since Bonner’s exodus and has points in 21 of those contests — a remarkable turnaround, to be sure. Forward Gage Quinney and defenceman Dallas Valentine were acquired in trades within two days of the GM change and both have proved to be valuable assets. (Quinney has 32 points in 24 games since coming to Kamloops and Valentine is plus-14 after 19 games with the Blazers). MacGregor was quoted in the club’s press releases announcing the deals, but both of those swaps were set in motion by Bonner and closed by his successor. While Oct. 13 is an important date on the calendar (a switch at the top was a good thing for both parties), whatever spark that may have provided is far from the sole reason why the Blazers have steadily risen up the Western Conference ladder. This is still the team Bonner formed. The whole story about the horrendous start is complex. Goaltender Connor Ingram was not himself to start the season. It’s safe to say the quirky Imperial, Sask., product is back on his game. On the Blazers’ outstanding 5-1 tour of the East Division that wrapped up on Saturday in Swift Current, Ingram was 5-0 and

posted exceptional numbers — a .952 save percentage and goals-against average of 1.60. Deven Sideroff was out of the lineup early on fighting mononucleosis. The speedster from Summerland was sluggish by his standard upon returning to the ice, but 25 points in 23 games have him trending in the right direction. Expect more from him in the second half, now a few months removed from his battle with illness. Matt Revel was sidelined while his teammates were busy embarking on the worst start in Blazers’ history, but he has long recovered from a shoulder injury and the forward from Abbotsford has pitched in up front with nine goals and 24 points in 27 games. Those problems have been fixed and the Blazers are benefitting from a few breakout seasons. The affable Collin Shirley has been the MVP of the first half, leading by example with team highs in goals, 21, and points, 40. Dawson Davidson has done more than just evade a sophomore slump. The 17-year-old D-man from Moosomin, Sask., is tied for sixth in team scoring with 21 points and is plus-10.
Garrett Pilon was not the most-highly touted player among Kamloops’ crop of 1998-born forwards, but he might just be a star in the making. The flashy forward from Saskatoon is tied for sixth with Davidson in Blazers’ scoring. Then there’s head coach Don Hay. Perhaps the returning Blazers took a month or so to remember what their taskmaster expects of them, but most seem to have figured it out again. Hay has his once cellar-dwelling charges within six points of both the Victoria Royals and Prince George Cougars, who are tied for second in the B.C. Division. Many questioned where the Blazers would find scoring in the absence of Cole Ully. Hay said they would have to do it by committee. That’s what they’ve done and the Quinney addition helped. The Blazers are near the middle of the pack in goals for, with 117 after 32 games. Kamloops is seventh in the Western Conference, five points ahead of the eighthplace Portland Winterhawks and nine points
up on the ninth-place Tri-City Americans. The Blazers have the league’s best penalty kill (85.2 per cent) and 15th best power play, so special teams certainly aren’t a weak point on Mark Recchi Way. Getting too high on this team doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, though, just like it was premature to throw it under the bus after six games. More is required from Quinn Benjafield, a first-round pick expected to contribute more offensively, and Patrik Maier, a Slovakian import defenceman who has underperformed. Jake Kryski, a 13th overall pick in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft who shows flashes of brilliance, can’t seem to find consistency. Can Ingram remain hot? What about Shirley? How will the squad handle a jampacked 40-game second half? Five of those contests are against the Western Conferenceleading Kelowna Rockets. The team is young, so ebb and flow is to be expected. It’s tempting to sit on the fence, but the glass-half-full, Blue-and-Orange-colouredglasses predictions occasionally tossed about by the hyper-loyal members of this team’s fan base seem nearer to my own gut-feel than they usually do. I had them finishing with the sixth-most points in the Western Conference in my preseason prognostication. I was wrong. I think they’ll get up to fourth. Warning: I also thought the Buffalo Bills would make the playoffs.

SPORTS WORLD JUNIORS
Tune in for these Canadian hockey stars THE CANADIAN PRESS
PLAYERS TO WATCH
The world junior hockey championship begins on Saturday with Canada facing the United States in the preliminary round. Here are five Canadian players to keep an eye on for the duration of the tournament:
1. MASON MCDONALD, GOALTENDER
MASON MCDONALD, GOALTENDER: Hockey Canada’s original plan for the world juniors was to carry two goaltenders, with Mackenzie Blackwood being the presumptive starter and McDonald keeping him sharp as a skilled backup. That all changed when Blackwood was suspended for eight games by the Ontario Hockey League on Dec. 8. Now, Blackwood

McDonald, at least against the United States and Denmark, will have all eyes on him. BRAYDEN POINT, CENTRE: Point is arguably the best player in the Western Hockey League and a veteran of Canada’s 2014 goldmedal junior team. However, he injured his shoulder on Nov.
17, forcing him to miss several games for the Moose Jaw Warriors and wear a non-contact jersey for Canada’s selection camp. He played in Canada’s pre-competition games but also missed some practices to rest his injury. If he’s on the ice he’s one of Canada’s most dynamic playmakers. If he’s injured, Canada will need to scramble to find a distributor of Point’s ability. JAKE VIRTANEN, RIGHT WING: Virtanen rode

Since that impressive start to the season he’s struggled with one goal and four assists in 19 games. The third-overall pick of the 2015 NHL draft, Strome is Canada’s most talented player in Helsinki, Finland. How he and longtime friend Marner react to the pressure of the event could determine if Canada will repeat as world champions.

Obituaries & In Memoriam SHIRLEY D BERTOLI (nee Noble) Shirley D Bertoli (nee Noble), 83 years old, left us on Sunday, December 20th at the Royal Inland Hospital after a brief illness. Shirley was born on March 28, 1932 in Kamloops, B.C. to Anne and William Noble. Shirley was the youngest of five children and grew up in Birch Island and later moved to Duncan to attend high school, living with her older sister Mildred and her family. Shirley moved back to Kamloops to care for her father, and embarked on a long and rewarding career with the Fish and Wildlife department. Throughout her life she maintained a positive demeanor and her love of life and nature is reflected in her children and grandchildren, as well as the many nieces and nephews that loved her and followed her on her famous nature walks at Scotch Creek and other places. Shirley was very proud of her son Mark Bertoli (Donna) and her daughter Linda Dawson Reid (Andy) and nothing made her happier than being with her amazing grandchildren Marisa and Taylor Bertoli and Dylan Dawson. Shirley is survived by her son Mark (Donna), daughter Linda (Andy) grandchildren Marisa, Taylor and Dylan, as well as her sister Zelma (Bill) and her brother Bill (Gert) along with numerous nieces and nephews and wonderful friends. She is predeceased by her brother
Bill and sister Mildred (Stub), and her dear friends Helen and Jim Dawson. Shirley also leaves behind her special family, the ones she loved, laughed with and truly cared for. Shirley had a real zest for life, she loved to garden, play cards and dance, but what she loved best was being with her family and many friends. Shirley had deep roots in the North Thompson and the Wells Grey area. Shirley had a unique ability to take time and see the true beauty of this world. The smiles and joy of the ones she loved, the new green leaves in the spring, or God’s beautiful display in the colors of the Fall. Shirley was also a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary. Shirley was the glue of her family. If there was a message she would want to leave behind it would be to be kind and do things for others. Shirley had a passion for visiting and bringing joy and kindness into the lives of many friends and family. It would be truly Shirley to make someone laugh, send a card and most of all pay it forward. There will be a Celebration of Shirley’s Life at Schoening Funeral Service, 513 Seymour St, Kamloops, BC V2C 2G8 on Monday, December 28th at 2:00 pm. Reception to follow. PATRICIA KATHLEEN DAWN STEFANIK (nee McFayden) January 12, 1940 – December 14, 2015 Patricia Stefanik of Kamloops passed away on Monday, December 14, 2015 at 75 years of age. Her memory will be treasured by her loving husband Carl Stefanik of nearly 58 years, children Susan (Jerry) Gobbee of Kamloops, David Stefanik of Kamloops (predeceased), and Marianne Stefanik (Terry Dilts) of Paris, Ontario; grandchildren Joseph (Carissa) Gobbee, Jason (Chantelle) Gobbee, Justin Gobbee, and Jaime Laplante; great-grandchildren Maya, Jacob, Taylynn, Gavin, Keaton and Kiara; brother and sister-in-law; Darell (Karen) of Kamloops; Dannie, Marilyn and Nick McFayden, all predeceased. Carl’s family; brother and sisters-in-law; many loving nieces and nephews, and cherished friends. To Gail Stefanik, her best friend, a loving thank you. Patricia was born in Kamloops, with her Mom Florence McFayden making the trail, walking to deliver Pat at RIH, from the north side of the river. She lived her childhood, as a farm girl, and attended school in Vinsulla and Kamloops. Pat became a dispatcher for Yellow Cabs, having met her husband Carl there and their story is shown by how their family grew and is still growing. Pat retired from the city of Kamloops, working from 1979-2004. A Private Family Celebration of life will take place at the Summit Drive Baptist Church on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 from 12-2pm. The family would like to offer a special thank you to the ICU nurses, who were very caring and compassionate, and to Kamloops Funeral Home.

eorge! George! Wake up! It’s the hospital. They have a heart! We have to go now!” George Lambeth groaned and groggily sat up. He’d been on the heart transplant list for 14 months and he was getting worse as the delay stretched on. They’d been warned a suitable donor could be found at any time, and that time was now. Winnie, his wife of 38 years, hurriedly threw their suitcases, already packed for this day, into the car. They made it to the hospital in record time, as it was Boxing Day and traffic was light. As George was being prepped he asked Dr. Swanson about the donor. “Black ice,” the doctor said. “Bad accident with an on-coming semi. Twenty-four year old woman. Sorry, no time to chat now.” A woman’s heart. George’s mind raced. As the anaesthetic kicked in, he wondered who she was. He heard Winnie’s voice before he opened his eyes.

“George. It was a success! You’ll have to take things easy for quite a while, but Dr. Swanson said everything went very well.” George lay quietly, feeling the strong steady beat of a heart, her heart, beating inside his chest. This was going to take getting used to. The next few months went by in a blur, as the pain of having his chest cracked open faded, and the anti-rejection drugs did their work. Pretty soon, he was back at his job at BSL Engineering — he was the “L” — a successful geo-technical firm. He got some good-natured ribbing from his partners Branson and Smith about his new “lady parts,” but otherwise things went back to normal — at first. Initially it was the dreams. Nightmares, really. Bright, oncoming lights then pain and darkness and “momma!” screaming out in a woman’s voice. He didn’t say anything to Winnie, but she started to notice other things, especially as the holidays approached. Christmas had never been big for George. See CHANGE, page B3

A change of heart for Christmas From page B1
He and Winnie had no children — and frankly, he didn’t like the fuss and bother of it. Their house was the only one on the block with no lights in December. One day, he came home and the word “Scrooge” had been stamped into the snow on his front lawn. He angrily erased it and stared up and down the street to see if a culprit was anywhere near. “Humbug!” he said loudly, not caring who heard it. First it was the eggnog. Winnie loved it and always bought a few litres as Christmas approached. She called in to his den, “George! What happened to the eggnog?”
“I drank it,” he shouted back. Winnie came and stood in the doorway, a quizzical look on her face. “But, you hate eggnog.” George shrugged. “I like it now. Don’t know why.” Winnie just stared at him as he turned his attention back to the computer. “What are you listening to?” she asked. A blues song was playing quietly as he checked his emails. “The blues,” he answered. “You’ve never liked the blues, always said it was depressing.” “Whatever, Winnie. Don’t you have something else to do?” “Okay, grumpy bear. Lunch will be ready in 10 minutes.” “Hmph,”George responded curtly. The next day, George headed out to
Canadian Tire to get some de-icer for the sidewalks. For some reason, he was drawn to the Christmas supplies. On impulse, he bought an illuminated manger display and a full set of house lights. When Winnie got back from her own shopping, he had most of it installed. “George! What are you doing? I mean, it looks great, but I don’t understand. “You’ve never wanted Christmassy stuff before. What’s going on?” George paused, leaning against the step-ladder. All of sudden, he burst into tears. “I don’t know! I don’t know! What’s happening to me, Winnie?” The next week, they were in Dr. Swanson’s office for
his regular check-up. George didn’t really want to talk about what had been happening, but Winnie insisted. Dr. Swanson listened quietly. “Cell memory,” he said. “It’s a phenomenon in transplant patients. There is significant anecdotal evidence that recipients take on some personality quirks and preferences of their donor. “No hard proof yet, but some serious research into it has started.” Eggnog? The blues? Christmas decorations? George had to find out. He searched news stories for a Christmas-Day accident the year before. Samantha Gray, 24, was on her way home from Christmas with her family in Pemberton when her car slid on black ice

into the path of an oncoming semi. She remained alive long enough to donate her organs, including a heart for George. There was mention of a memorial Facebook page. George slowly looked at the tributes from Samantha’s friends and family. She was a waitress and aspiring blues singer. And, she loved Christmas — the lights, the decorations, a manger display she helped set up each year, the gifts and eggnog. George looked thoughtfully at the computer screen. The one-year anniversary of the accident was approaching — and Samantha’s mother had invited anyone to post something. George hesitated for a moment, then typed.
“I’m George Lambeth. I have Samantha’s heart. Do you want to meet?” He and Winnie arranged to meet her at a Starbucks. Anne Gray was an older version of the tribute picture on Samantha’s Facebook page. What he wasn’t expecting was his reaction — his heart’s reaction — when she said, “Hello.” It was like Samantha’s heart did a somersault. He was so flustered he couldn’t speak. Anne just looked into his eyes knowingly and, putting a hand on his arm, said, “Let’s sit down.” They talked and one hour stretched into two. Outside the coffee shop, when they were about to say goodbye, Anne said, “I know this may
not seem right to you, but I have a favour to ask. “I’d like to give you a hug and put my ear to your chest, so I can hear my baby’s heart beat one more time.” Her eyes had a look of pleading. George glanced at Winnie, who silently nodded. Anne’s voice choked with tears as she pressed her ear to George’s chest. “Oh, Sammie, Sammie! How I miss you.” Soon, all three of them were hugging and sobbing together. As they drove into their driveway, the lights glowed softly and the manger display once again told the story of the first Christmas. George gave Winnie a kiss on her cheek. “Samantha and I need some eggnog.”

Fill a mason jar and wrap twine around the mouth of the jar for a cute gift. Enjoy!

T
he new generation 2016 Chevrolet Volt has been awarded Green Car of the Year Award from Green Car Journal at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
This is the second time the Volt has won the award, the first time being when it debuted in 2010 as a 2011 model. Green Car Journal praised the Volt’s increased range, allnew propulsion system and bold design. “Chevrolet’s allnew Volt is a milestone, building on an already-technologically advanced ‘green’ car
and delivering what buyers have longed for, including an impressive 53-mile [85-kilometre] driving range on a single charge,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and carsofchange.com. “A visually appealing design, increased five-passenger seating and an array of on-board electronics combine with the
Volt’s inherent efficiencies to make the 2016 Chevrolet Volt a real winner.” The all-new Volt delivers a total driving range of up to 675 kilometres. Combined with EPA-estimated fuel economy of 5.6 L/100kms highway, Chevrolet expects owners to travel 1,600 kilometres between gasoline fill-ups. “Chevrolet is all about bringing affordable electrification to our customers and that is exactly what we did with the Volt” said Steve Majoros, Chevrolet marketing director. “For Volt to stand out in Green Car’s
evaluation, it reaffirms Chevrolet’s commitment to being a leader in electrification.” According to independent surveys, Volt owners are the most satisfied in the industry and 70 per cent of those owners are new to General Motors. The Green Car of the Year Award is determined by an 11-member panel and is based on fuel efficiency, Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board certifications, performance and affordability. The other finalists were the Audi A3 e-tron, Honda Civic, Hyundai Sonata and Toyota Prius.
A visually appealing design, “ increased five-passenger seating
