Christmas present that doesn’t fit under the tree – and came a bit early – made a huge impact on two local families. Earlier this month, two Campbell River families found out that they have been chosen to partner with Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North (HHVIN) for the new duplex that will be built at the corner of Westgate and Dalton roads. Melissa Hamstra found out she and her children Johnus, who is six and a half, and Tateum, who is three and a half, were chosen on Dec. 9. “I was flabbergasted, absolutely in shock,” she said. “Me and my babies are going to be OK, and that’s what feels really good.” Hamstra is a single parent who does not receive child support. She’s been living in low-income housing for four years since she was pregnant with Tateum, and she put herself through school in that time, going back to school two days after Tateum was born. Hamstra, who grew up in Campbell River, is currently working as an education assistant at Cedar Elementary School. When Hamstra thinks of becoming a homeowner, she says she thinks about how far she has come.

Melissa Hamstra and her children Johnus and Tateum will be moving into their own home this June after partnering with Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North.

“I guess in the last four years, I sort of figured out what I’m made of,” she said. “Without organizations like Habitat for Humanity, this dream wouldn’t be possible. It’s mind-blowing. I’m going to be leaving low-income housing. This is just another step towards my future, and it really is a game-

changer. Already, I feel more confident, and I don’t even know how to explain it or why I feel that way, but I do.” Hamstra feels empowered by this process, knowing that she’s going to be involved in building her own home and will also be learning how to maintain it. “Habitat has provided

me with the opportunity to make a home and start a life for my kids and that, I think, is the most amazing Christmas gift ever,” she said. The other new home is going to Benny and Maggie McGrath and their three children — Journey, 7, Bo, 5, and Halle, 3.

When they learned they had been chosen, Maggie recalls “there were tears everywhere.” “Our kids were already in bed, but when we found out, we had to get everybody out of bed, and they gave everybody a hug and said thank you,” added Benny. Maggie grew up in Campbell River. She and Benny were married seven years ago when she was 19 and he was 20, and then moved to Australia. Benny had a good job as a graphic designer in Sydney, but he lost his job one month before Journey was born. “That kind of started an era of trying to figure out how we’re going to make money,” said Benny. “So we moved back to Campbell River in a time when we just couldn’t afford to live in the city anymore.” Maggie now works at the Christian Life Children’s Centre in the afternoons. Benny is an online media manager. He does a lot of work for his mom’s business, What’s On Digest, and for the past year, he has been going to seminary and been an apprentice pastor. They have been renting the home they live in right now for six years. “Since we moved to Canada from Australia, we’ve done a lot of working in the church

instead of prioritizing making a lot of money for our family … that’s just meant that now that our kids are getting older, we’re realizing that we need to get things in order and we’re so far behind in terms of developing a career and income and that kind of stuff that for us to actually do things like buy a house would be impossible for us unless some kind of miracle happened,” said Benny. The McGraths say they have a wonderful landlord where they live now, but the house is old and in poor shape. Water comes into the

house during storms, and because the house is so wet, the children get sick often in winter. The McGraths are excited to be part of building their own home. “As a kid, we used to go up to Esperanza and we used to help build there and help out groups of people and I love that kind of stuff,” said Maggie. “You’re with these people for how many months it takes and you create this different family kind of because they’re excited and you’re excited. They get to see us building something that we’re going to have and that’s

been given to us, and these people are there, and they’re volunteering their time to help us. It’s a little overwhelming; it’s hard to think we deserve that kind of attention but people are just so lovely.” This year, while the McGrath and Hamstra families were the successful applicants, four other families met the criteria, and those four families have also signed a letter of intent with HHVIN and will be partnering with the organization for the next Campbell River build, according to Karen Bezaire, HHVIN’s communications and

Why next year will be better Like most people I know, I always start feeling optimistic around this time of year about what the next year has in store for me. While I know that, strictly speaking, the turning of the calendar means about as much in the grand scheme of things as a piece of gum stuck to the bottom of my shoe, because we’re always exactly one year away from this day one year from now, the end of December still becomes a time of reflection, introspection and goal-setting for me, as it does for many others. While I also think this kind of reflection should be done more frequently, I’ll leave that thought for another time. For right now, I’ll just say this: Next year will be better than this year. Yeah, yeah, I know. That’s what everyone says. But do you know why I’m feeling that way? Because I’m choosing to.

Whether you say “Merry Christmas,” “Happy Holidays,” or some other festive greeting that aligns with your beliefs and traditions, the Mirror would like to officially wish you a very hearty, “Right back atcha!” This holiday season, we at the Mirror are celebrating the community itself. We take great pride in telling you what’s happening around you in the Campbell River area, and we take particular pride in watching – and telling others – as you step up to the plate and help each other. This time of year is easy to see the community coming together. And it’s not just the annual Christmas drives that benefit from being surrounded by such an amazing group of people like we have here in Campbell River. It’s heartwarming to see the outpouring of support from the community when someone loses their apartment to fire, as happened on 7th Avenue a few weeks ago. It’s wonderful to watch the community come together to gather their recyclables to support the Sea Cadets after they had theirs stolen in a break in back in the summer. The Grassroots Kind Hearts initiative has trouble, at times, keeping up with the number of donations flowing in, but they manage to do so because those donations, in part, are of people’s time and energy to help them. Campbell River is a place where people try to take care of each other – where it’s not always about “me first.” And we’re showing the next generation that giving is better than receiving, as well, through initiatives like Everybody Deserves a Smile, where the students of Southgate Middle School collected and distributed goods to those less fortunate in our community while learning about the social issues that lead to inequality and the struggle of some vulnerable people among us. We’re hoping we keep seeing that as we go through 2016, and we have no doubt that we will. One of the most consistent things we hear when working on stories to share is some variation of, “When the community hears something needs to be done, the community gets it done,” and that’s not something that goes away when the calendar gets replaced on the wall. That’s a state of being. That’s the way we are. We’re proud of you, Campbell River. And we’re proud to be part of you.

that there are those among us who are all about “me first.” I will continue to realize that even seemingly-bad things happening are opportunities to grow and learn and improve. I will continue to consider time with my friends and family integral to my state of mind – instead of an interruption of things I could be “accomplishing.” Maybe I’ll find time to read some of the backlog of books on my shelves that I haven’t gotten to. Wait…I’m being optimistic, so I should say, “I will find some time to read some of the books that are waiting patiently on my shelves for me to explore them.” I will see more people play live music in 2016 than I did in 2015. I will paint more. I will sing more. Because I’m choosing to see the good in the world. I hope you will, too.

Free WiFi will be coming to Spirit Square and three other city facilities by next summer. Council, at its Dec. 14 meeting, voted to spend $7,310 to bring wireless Internet access to the Museum at Campbell River, the Maritime Heritage Centre, and the Sportsplex. Coun. Larry Samson said places such as the museum and Maritime Heritage Centre, which has been used from time to time to host regional solid waste meetings, does not have the capacity to handle the technology the meetings require. He said bringing those buildings up to speed will provide a huge benefit to the community. “I think it does affect the people that want to rent our city-owned facilities and want to hold meetings there,” Samson said. “I thinking bringing them all up to a standard so that they

can be used adequately by the patrons renting it is important.” Warren Kalyn, the city’s manager of information technology, said WiFi at the Maritime Heritage Centre will handle 30 concurrent users and cover both floors of the building, as well as the parking lot where the Farmer’s Market sets up. At the Museum, WiFi will also be available on both floors and will allow for 15 people to use the wireless Internet at the same time. WiFi added at the Sportsplex will improve upon temporary WiFi that can be accessed during special events such as the Home Show. WiFi for the Maritime Heritage Museum and Spirit Square will cost the city $120 each month in operating costs while providing wireless Internet access at the Museum and at the Sportsplex will cost $100 each month. Kalyn said the WiFi access at all four loca-

tions will not require use of a password but will be subject to content management, which means access to any inappropriate sites will be denied. Coun. Colleen Evans said having the wireless access could help the city attract investment and stimulate the economy. “I think this will give great advantage to ensuring the types of tourism opportunities that we want to host and the events a lot of the nonprofits want to host in these centres,” Evans said. “I just think this is going to be a great advantage.” Kalyn said council can expect the installation of the WiFi to take two to three months and city staff hope to have it up and running by the summer. Mayor Andy Adams said while he usually wouldn’t condone council spending money in its operating budget so soon after financial planning, he would support the initiative in principle.

On Dec. 16, a letter was sent out to parents of Georgia Park students

saying one parent’s child was told to “smile for the camera,” by a man in a dark van. “The student did not recognize the person as an adult connected to our school community and therefore, we are taking this incident very seriously,” the letter read. “While the man never left his vehicle and the student was unharmed, police have still been notified and are investigating.” Staff ensured that students did not leave unaccompanied the day of the event, and supervision during outside activities has been increased.

“Ensuring our students’ safety is our top priority and in light of this incident, I would encourage you to take this opportunity to remind your children to never talk to or approach a stranger in a vehicle and to always walk to and from school with a buddy,” reads the letter from principal Kim Padington. “We would also like to remind all parents and visitors to our school that you should not take pictures of students unless you are attending a public event (such as a school concert) or you are invited to do so by the teacher.”

The Nordics showed true heart and determination at the crosscountry ski race which is known to draw competitive athletes from across the country.

“This was a big race for our athletes,” said Andrea Stapff, head coach of the Nordics. “It’s a high calibre event with national team athletes in attendance so a great opportunity for our younger athletes to ski alongside some of the best skiers in Canada.” In a breakout sprint race on the Saturday,

Ross Lamon of Comox won a silver medal in the Juvenile Boys category, among a field of 40 racers. On the Sunday, in the long distance skate race, Aiden Noble (Courteney)and Gabe Glendhill (Cumberland) secured the top two spots in the Midget Boys category, winning gold and silver,

respectively. Emmy Stapff also did well in the Midget Girls category, finishing in fourth position, only .02 seconds short of a bronze medal. According to Stapff, “our athletes put in a tremendous effort, and showed gritty and determined racing.” The team will be on

the Island for the next four weeks working hard in preparation for the Zone 6 BC Winter Games trials, which will be held January 2 at Mount Washington – the Nordics’ home facility. Soon after, the team will head back to Vernon for a BC Cup race, January 9-10.

One thing about trout fishing is that the family can find a lake and get out fishing. Worms, artificial eggs and powerbaits will work. On the fly I have changed a few regular patterns that have been very good during the summer. A black or green Carey Special fly has worked very well and when things got quiet on the bite it was time to change.

Take, for example, Roberts lake. In late September the weather is still good and trout are located at various depths of water and in some cases the big trout will move into the shallows. The boat launch area has a bit of a drop off and if you can get down past 20 feet some good fishing can be had. Some of the best trout fishing is on the north end of the lake at early morning or late evening. During the cold weather, the fish will be sluggish but cast out using lures

In the spring when the creek is running and the water is coming down from the mountain, the area on the south side can be very good as the water foams at the area where it meets the lake. Fry lake can be a good spot to fish if you can get out to the alley by canoe or small boat. When I first moved to Campbell River I asked Ralph Shaw what fly to use when things got quiet. Ralph was doing a fly tying demo and handed me a hand-whipped deer hair pattern and he said try this. The Tom Thumb fly is easy to tie and you don’t have to make it fancy. A fly in a number 8 or 10 size will be torn up by the trout. It goes to show that simple hand tied flies will catch fish. Coming up in the new year I will have the top three flies or go-to flies that many anglers use in the Campbell River area.

A hockey game like none other The first-ever Campbell River Select hockey game was a great success Dec. 17. The Selects defeated the travelling Nanaimo Eagles 14-13 at Rod Brind’Amour Arena. The last goal was scored in the final seconds of the game to put Campbell River ahead by one. It was a rollicking undertaking with the score remaining relatively even for the whole game.

The players showed their enthusiasm and skill throughout. Both teams had assistance from a few players from the Campbell River Storm. The Storm have great fans in the Select team and were happy to provide some game strategy to both teams. Goals for Nanaimo were scored by: Sash Barbour, Matt Caljoul, Bill Polz, Jacob Park, Jack Cairns and Rick Brown-

Safety improvements may soon be on the way for Willis Road following a recent accident involving a pedestrian along that corridor. At its Dec. 9 budget planning meeting, council allocated $100,000 towards coming up with

some short-term and mid-term solutions to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists along Willis. The road, with its narrow shoulders and deep ditches, has long been a hazard for pedestrians and drivers, that have been known to swerve into the other lane to avoid people walking

along the shoulder. Willis Road has been a topic of discussion for several years and at least two city councils but city staff have estimated that long-term solutions will cost in the multi millions of dollars. Ron Neufeld, the city’s general manager of operations, told council last week, however, that staff

could look into some cheaper fixes. “There may be limited sections of that road where we could add additional shoulder width to improve the space allocated for cyclists and pedestrians but there are certainly sections where it’s very tight,” Neufeld said. “The only way to provide that room is to fill the ditches and the only way to fill the ditches is to put in a storm drain system and that triggers significant cost.” The other option, said Neufeld, is to develop a mid-term strategy to address the infrastructure issues, specifically drainage, that would enable the city to put in a continuous corridor for cyclists and pedestrians from one end of Willis to the other. Coun. Ron Kerr said it’s something council needs to do. “For the last number of years residents of the Willis Road area have been asking for safety improvements,” he said. “There’s been a recent accident up there when a man was hit on the side

He has been campaigning since 2012 for safety improvements along both Petersen and Willis roads. He said back in October, 2012 that “citizens risk their lives daily” walking along the narrow shoulders and that the situation is so bad that it “would be comical if it weren’t so dangerous.” Staff at Palmer Place have also lobbied council for Willis improvements. On another occasion she saw two Palmer Place residents trying to get out of the way of a large recreational vehicle, only to see one of them slip into a ditch in an attempt to avoid the vehicle. And the situation is no better now. Earlier this month, Campbell River resident Nicholas Benner was knocked into a ditch as he was walking near Willis and Petersen after a car struck him in a hit and run incident. The accident occurred on the evening of Dec. 1 in pouring rain and low visibility. Mayor Andy Adams called it an “unfortunate incident” that underlined the need to take a look at safety on Willis. Coun. Michele Babchuk confessed that even her husband was once a victim. “My husband is one who ended up in a ditch,” she said. Before the proliferation of modern fast food restaurants with their “drive-through” came the more social and certainly less rushed version, the “drive-in” restaurant. An automobile culture was emerging across North America. At drive-ins, carhops would clip trays on to the car windows and patrons would enjoy their meal in the comfort of their own vehicles. The drivein was the place to be. The first drive-in restaurant opened in 1921 in Dallas, Texas, although it would take time before the idea became wide spread. In 1951 the concept arrived in Campbell River with the opening of Del’s Drive-In. Del’s offered the complete drive-in experience, including carhops in go-go boots and green and white uniforms. It quickly became a meeting place where teens would come every night with their music blaring. Del and Betty Pelletier began the restaurant, and then after leasing it to others sold it to Del’s brother and sister-inlaw Ernie and Joyce Pelletier in 1960. “Every weekend in the summer it would be busy busy. All the kids would come, and they would even have little dances out in the parking lot. They would get all of their radios going and it was a fun place to be,” recalls Joyce. When Ernie and Joyce bought the restaurant they were only 28 and 25 years old respectively, and had two young girls. Over the next few

years their family grew to four kids with the arrival of two boys. “When we first got started if someone had come in with a $50 bill we couldn’t have changed it. It was scary, I would go home at night and wonder if we were going to make it through another day, and we did. We hit it off really good with the kids that patronized us. It was a very demanding job, but it was fun, we had a lot of really good help.” Ernie and Joyce’s daughter Yvonne remembers her and her sister helping out with the family business. The kids helped with all sorts of jobs, such as prep work and sweeping the lot in the morning. “When we got older we would waitress at the shop and help out that way.” Joyce remembers clearly one Canada Day early on in her career as a restauranteur. “The July 1st parade used to come right past our place. We were there at

7:30 or 8 in the morning chipping chips and blanching and getting ready. Then everybody came at one time. They were all saying “Where’s my order! Where’s my order!” My husband at the time was the cook and I was the waitress. I kept saying “It’s coming! It’s com-

ing!” Finally I was so frustrated I took off my apron and said “I quit” and I went and sat on the curb out the back door. Next thing I know my husband came and joined me. So we were sitting out there thinking what do we do now? We finally got it all under control and everyone

In later years we coordinated it a little better.” Campbell River local Dave Tabish reminisces about his times cruising Del’s: “Getting a driver’s license and your first car was a big deal, you had a license 12 hours after you turned 16 and cars were a big part of our lives at that time. Driving around town was a big event, you would cruise through the plaza and go see who was there to talk to, and then drive by Del’s to see who was there. You always cruised past Del’s.” Although not currently on display, the Museum has in it’s collection the orange and blue neon sign, featuring an ice cream cone and the words “Del’s Burgers”. Recently a photograph of the Del’s DriveIn sign was enlarged so that graduates of Carihi High’s class of 1975 could have their photo taken with it.

School District 72, during Phase Two of their newly-adopted 10-year Facility Plan, will look at selling off some property. The district currently has surplus property in the form of the old Evergreen Elementary, on Stuart Island, at Rock Bay and on McPhedran Street.

“Given declining enrolment, the amount of surplus space in our existing schools, and present development plans by the City of Campbell River, it is highly unlikely that these sites would be required by the School District within the next 20 years,” reads the recommendation in the Facility Plan. “As such, there could be an opportunity,

through the sale of some or all of these properties, to free some funds that could be directed towards the maintenance and betterment of our existing facilities.” Those properties, once it is determined that they will go up for sale, will first need to be considered for purchase by provincial organizations, First Nations, local government and community organizations at fair market value before being put on the open market. “What would be a reasonable expectation of how much of that money we could actually retain (upon the sale of a property), asked Trustee Joyce McMann, “given that the Ministry (of Education) would get to take some of that?”

That’s where it gets complicated, said Sectretary Treasurer Kevin Patrick. Patrick informed the board that a detailed history would have to be determined for each property in order to know what the school district would be entitled to in the event of a sale. “If the Crown provided it, the school district is required, upon sale or disposal, to provide 75 per cent to the Ministry of Education,” Patrick told the board. The district can then ask for approval to access those funds in the future, but there’s no guarantee they won’t just be recovered by the Ministry, never to be seen again by SD72. If there’s a “Crown Reverter Clause,” on the ownership of a property that was given to the district – meaning the property was given to the district contingent on it being operating as a school facility, which is the case with many of the district’s rural properties – it would be returned to the Crown with no financial compensation to the district. If the school district bought or attained the property themselves, 100 per cent of the sale of that property would go back into the school district coffers. The various properties in question have been acquired through a variety of those options, so a detailed analysis of each property’s history would need to be determined before the question of “what does the school district get?” can be answered. The process of performing that analysis will begin during Phase Two of the Facility Plan – which begins next September – now that the board has approved the plan.

We give considerable attention to the physical ecologies outside our bodies but very little to the psychological ones inside. Because these inner ecologies are essential in determining how we feel and think, their importance has attracted the concern of the American philosopher and technology analyst, Matthew Crawford. In his book, The World Beyond Your Head, Crawford argues that our psychological space — our “attentional commons” — is so reduced by the inces-

The character of our modern consumer civilization seems to function as an organized conspiracy against privacy, seclusion and aloneness, as if we can’t be trusted with our own feelings and thoughts. Crawford notes, “attention is a resource,” and “a person has only so much of it. And yet we’ve auctioned off more and more of our public space to private commercial interests, with their constant demands on us to look at the products on display or simply absorb some bit of corporate messaging.” Crawford argues that all these incessant “little appropriations of attention” constitute “social engineering”, an exhausting process that consumes our energy and awareness. All these

“incessant distractions” he writes, are attempting to “...monetize every bit of private head space by appropriating our collective attention. In the process, we’ve sacrificed silence — the condition of not being addressed. And just as clean air makes it possible to breathe, silence makes it possible to think.” So, if you are reading this and can find a moment to think, you may notice that the same process that’s consuming our inner ecologies is also consuming our outer ones.

A rezoning to facilitate a new Habitat for Humanity home will go before a public hearing. Habitat needs the rezoning in order to accommodate development of a duplex on the corner of Dalton and Westgate Roads – an area which is made up of predominantly singlefamily homes. The property up for rezoning was donated to Habitat by city council which approved first and second reading of the rezoning at its Dec. 14 council meeting. Those readings triggered the next phase – the public hearing to be held sometime in the early new year. Peter Sanderson, build coordinator, said Habitat has already selected two families for the new homes – a family of three and a family of five. “The Westgate property will be our third duplex and will give two more families a hand up,” Sanderson said. Past Habitat builds include a duplex on Maple Street and one on

Active families will make a positive contribution to the neighbourhood.” And speaking of contribution, Sanderson was quick to point out that the two families who will move into the duplex are not being given a home for free.
