Report calls for phase out of the independent child advocate

Turpel-Lafond rejected Plecas’ suggestion that an internal “contrarian” and a ministry spokesperson similar to those

employed by police forces would be trusted by the public to identify and report on issues in the ministry. Plecas said privacy rules need to be changed so an allparty committee of MLAs can be briefed on child death and serious injury cases, allowing opposition MLAs to provide the oversight and criticism they bring to other ministries of the B.C. government. Children and Family Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux said she can’t commit to specific financial measures until the provincial budget is presented in Febru-

ary, but she has the support of Premier Christy Clark and the cabinet to increase resources for the ministry. Turpel-Lafond said accumulated cuts and freezes to the ministry budget leave it at least $100 million below what it needs to keep up with its caseload. She also objected to Plecas’ statement in his report that no system will ever protect all children in government care from death, which he described as rare. There have been 90 deaths so far in the current fiscal year, Turpel-Lafond said.

Lynn Townsend, Calendar Club operator, donated 40 teddy bears to the B.C. Ambulance Service (BCAS). Receiving the gift was Steve Miskulin, BCAS Unit Chief. “This really helps sick kids to stay distracted when they have to take an ambulance,” said Miskulin. “We are very grateful.” Townsend has also donated an additional 38 teddy bears to the Angel Tree initiative.

Students in Mrs. Halldorson’s Grade 5/6 class recently spearheaded the annual Food Drive at Kootenay Orchards Elementary School. These students were responsible for going to classrooms each morning to collect and tally the items that were brought in. On December 16th, they packed all of the items up and sent them to the Cranbrook Food Bank. This year a total of 1322 items were collected. It is so nice to see a school come together to support those in need. Thank you Kootenay Orchards students and families for your generous donations this year!

The school had a challenge to donate 50 pounds of food to celebrate the school’s 50th Anniversary this year. When the inititive was over, the school ended up collecting 357 pounds of food. Along with the City’s lamp post decorations and tree lighting, shoppers have been treated to creative and alluring displays in almost every store front window since the end of November. From old fashion Christmas themes to a dazzling evening light show it’s well worth a leisurely stroll. The Cranbrook Downtown Business Association, wanting to add incentive to the decorating tradition, collaborated with SNAPd East Kootenay and Sweet Gestures Chocolate Shoppe to hold the 1st annual “Spirit of the Holidays” decorating contest, open to all downtown shop locations. Joey Hoechsmann, DBA Chairman, explained, “One of the DBA’s mandates is to create a better downtown experience. We were very impressed with the amount of downtown businesses that have embraced the holiday spirit and decorated their windows and stores.This contest is a great way to encourage downtown businesses to have a little fun and attract shoppers in the process.” On Thursday December 17 Lotus Books was named the winner. Owner Erin Dalton claimed the prize which includes a ¼ page ad in SNAPd East Kootenay’s January 2016 edition and a stunning (and delicious) Christmas Holiday Basket from Sweet Gestures Chocolate Shoppe. “The book tree in our window was built from hand-rolled cones made of pages

from a misprinted copy of local author Bruce Kirkby’s Sand Dance. Thanks to our friends & followers on Facebook for taking the time to comment & share the photos”, said Dalton when asked about her shop’s unique window presentation. Both Snapd and the Cranbrook DBA were pleased with their partnership on this first annual Holiday Decorating contest and are grateful to Sweet Ges-

tures for offering to enhance the prize. “We encouraged participation from the downtown business community urging them to be creative, be festive and have fun,” said Snapd owner Janice Sommerfeld. “There are many businesses that have their windows beautifully decorated and we invite them to participate next year. After a full year of gathering, sorting and placing, the Kimberley Pipe Band are proud to have a Limited Edition History Book available for sale. It’s a beautiful, hard cover book that is filled with hundreds pictures of the band’s history dating back as far as 1927. This memory and picture book was compiled by former Pipe Major Jim Warriner and his wife Elsie. In preparation for the pipe band’s 90th Anniversary and Tattoo in July of 2017, the band felt the timing was perfect to offer this to the public. Recycling Tips That’s a Wrap

Paper based wrapping paper can be recycled in any of the yellow bins in the East Kootenay and in the curbside recycling programs in Fernie and Invermere. From cards and envelopes to wrapping and tissue paper, please recycle as much as possible.

What You Need to Know About Glass The glass collection bins in the East Kootenay are for container glass only. That means only container glass that holds food and beverages. Some examples include: ✓ Jam jars ✓ Pickle jars ✓ Cheez whiz jars ✓ Olive oil jars ✓ Iced tea or wine bottles These containers must be well rinsed with lids removed. The following are NOT accepted in the glass bins: ✕ Dishes of any kind (clear drinking glasses, pyrex dishes, corel ware, pottery, plates, etc). No dishes! ✕ Shower doors, windshields ✕ Lightbulbs ✕ Picture frame glass ✕ Glass trinkets (like candlestick holders and tree decorations)

Flip Your Lid!

Metal lids cannot be recycled in the yellow bins. Please make sure you remove the lids before putting glass containers in the recycling bin. Metal lids can be recycled for free at Columbia Recycle in Marysville.

Please Keep it Clean Our yellow recycling bins are often on private property and it is so important that we keep them clean. Please put all recyclables in the bin. Over the holidays, the bins see a huge increase in volume. While our contactor will be working hard to empty the bins more frequently, sometimes they will be full. If you encounter a full bin, please look for another bin in the area or come back. Never leave recyclables on or around the bins. Thank you for helping us keep our recycling areas clean!

Fluorescent Light Recycling The LightRecycle program accepts compact fluorescent and tube fluorescent light bulbs free of charge. The recycling program is for residentially generated lights only. Reuse Comes Before Recycle Over the holidays many people will receive gifts that will replace perfectly good older items. Instead of throwing good items away, please consider giving them away so they can be reused. There are Reuse Centres at the Cranbrook, Kimberley, Elkford, Fernie and Sparwood Transfer Stations and Columbia Valley Landfill. The Reuse Centres accept household items in good working condition. Everything in the Reuse Centres is available at no cost. Some examples of items that are accepted in the Reuse Centres include: ✓ Chairs ✓ Pictures ✓Televisions ✓ Small dishes ✓Light fixtures ✓ Tools Items that cannot be accepted include large appliances, tires, mattresses, automotive parts, scrap metal, wood and clothing.
