CP Holiday Train helps stock food bank newsroom@mapleridgenews.com
T
hey’re good – for now. Thanks to the kindness of strangers, the Friends in Need Food Bank has topped up its reserves, following the last-minute fundraisers this Christmas. “So we are chock-a-block full,” executive-director Mary Robson said Monday. “But that doesn’t mean it’s going to last through the year. Right now, we have an abundance of food. Our sorters are burning out.” The food bank is pumping out 750 to 800 hampers per month now and needs the Christmas season in order to build up its reserves for the following 12 months. Last year, it was running out of some items by March. School kids, firefighters, Canadian Pacific’s Holiday Train and ordinary people are the reason the warehouse and shelves are stuffed now. Friday’s arrival of the Holiday Train at the Port Haney train station resulted in 1,675 pounds (760 kilograms) of food donated by Maple Ridge fans who showed up to look at the lights and hear Jim Cuddy from Blue Rodeo. In Pitt Meadows, 1,876 pounds (850 kg) of food were collected. “So Pitt Meadows, beat us again,” Robson said. For cash donations, Pitt Meadows residents and visitors gave a total of $2,220. On top of that, was an $800-cheque donation from Coast Capital Savings, for a total of $3,020. Maple Ridge collected only $2,852. “When you look at [donations] per capita, Pitt Meadows is way ahead again.” It’s only the second year the train has stopped in Pitt Meadows. Students and teachers throughout the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district have also pitched in, as always. “The schools have done an amazing job in their food drive.” The same goes for last Saturday’s Breakfast with Santa
T GET FI
event, hosted by NorthRidge Church. The Firefighters for Families Food Drive that took place Dec. 12, also made a difference as did Whonnock Roofing’s annual grocery shopping spree. Maple Ridge firefighters raised about $6,000 in cash for the food bank, plus food donations, from that day when firefighters stood outside grocery stores. The proceeds are split evenly between the food bank and the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society. In Pitt Meadows, the same event raised about $2,888 for the food bank. Whonnock Roofing helped out with the final push with its annual grocery shopping spree last week. About a dozen employees and their families swooped into Save-On Foods in the downtown and bought $5,012 worth of groceries. Part of that included $500 worth of gift cards. It’s the 10th year the company has run the event, with a total donation during that time of about $50,000. “We’re just trying to give back,” said owner Clay Gagnon. “This community has been good for us. It’s one of the ways, that’s all it is.” The roofers filled the carts with the top 10 most-needed food items at the food bank. “Save-On is an unsung hero in all this as well,” Gagnon added. The store discounts some items allowing more bang for the buck in the shopping spree. Robson said the food bank has been highlighting the most-needed items, “trying to get people to focus on the items we need for our hampers. We really think that’s paying off.” Currently, the top-five items needed at the food bank are canned meals, such as ravioli or spaghetti, canned tomato sauce, chunky soups and Ensure, a food supplement for seniors. “One thing we are always low on is canned fruits and vegetables.”
Jim Cuddy performs on the CP Holiday Train in Pitt Meadows on Saturday.

The barge served as a MacDonald’s restaurant during the world fair along False Creek in Vancouver 30 years ago. “Hopefully, the work stays here and keeps people busy for a while.” Bill Christensen, with Supreme Structural, said the barge is just being moored on the company’s waterfront, although work could take place there. “It’s just a parking spot.” He said the mooring location could be leased for as long as a year. The 57-metre, two-storey glass and metal barge was used as a floating MacDonald’s restaurant during the world’s fair, held on the shores of Vancouver’s False
Creek in 1986. It remained docked in False Creek for several years before complaints about its deteriorating condition prompted the move to Burrard Inlet. After the failure of a previous plan to use McBarge as a pub in Mission, owner Howard Meakin isn’t releasing specifics about the vessel’s future, but predicts the refit will make it a popular attraction at its next location. “I’m curious where it’s going next,” Livingstone said. – with files from CP

An icon from Expo 86 is going to find a temporary home in Maple Ridge. On Tuesday, the aging structure that served as the ‘McBarge’ at Expo was towed beneath the Golden Ears Bridge and up to Supreme Structural Transport in the Albion Industrial Area. The slow journey started the previous day after it finally left its long-time location in Burrard Inlet. But Bruce Livingstone, business retention and expansion officer with the City of Maple Ridge, isn’t sure who’s going to be doing the actual repairs to the 30-year-old structure. He pointed out that Supreme, just west of the old Albion ferry terminal on River Road, is a transport company and that the repairs might be done elsewhere in Maple Ridge. Livingstone wonders about the final use of the refitted barge and its final location.

Tapestry Canada is a mosaic of cultures and peoples, and proudly so. From the First Nations who settled this land, to the waves of immigrants from many countries and many religions – Irish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, German, Asian, Christian, Sikh, Hindu, Buddhist. You name it, they are probably represented here. Sadly, with the arrival of Syrian refugees, we’re seeing a number of comments expressing ideas that are less than accepting of their culture. At best, these comments could be described as well-meaning but ill-informed; at worst, racist and bigoted. ISIS, Al Qaeda and similar groups already condemn our way of life. The surest way to convince them they are right is to act in ways to confirm their views.. These refugees, both the families that are already here and those yet to come, have been through enough. Years in refugee camps, without a place to call home, and many indignities along their journey to a new country. The last thing they should experience in Canada is more intolerance. In his work We Are More, B.C. poet Shane Koyczan describes Canada as “cultures strung together then woven into a tapestry … an experiment going right for a change.” That’s a pretty beautiful vision of Canada. On the other hand, grey people living in a grey world is not an ideal to strive for. Because this planet would be a much lesser place if we were all the same, with everyone acting just like everyone else, all marching to the beat of the same drummer. So let’s show these refugees – and each other, for that matter – that Canada really is a welcoming place, and that they are another thread in that tapestry, making us a stronger whole. –Black Press

Better place to live with empathy Empathy is seeing with another’s eyes, hearing with another’s ears, feeling with another’s heart – Alfred Adler, psychiatrist.
Y
ou demonstrate empathy, said psychiatrist Alfred Adler, when you really work at listening. Along the Fraser Jack Emberly Any talking you do has one purpose – to understand what the other person is saying; feel what the other is feeling. At Christmas time, “active listening” – the term Adler gave this form of communication – could be the best present someone ever got. Teesha Sharma knows how important active listeners can be to a young person in crisis. She’s a mental health worker, and the force behind the Blue Door Youth Services in Maple Ridge. It’s an organization aimed at developing a youth mentorship program here. Today, I’m watching her vision grow. Sharma’s conducting a mentorship training workshop at the CEED Centre for 14 local citizens who’ve answered her call to attend. She wants these adults to devote a little quality time each week to a youth at risk of homelessness, teens dealing with abuse or mental illness.
Q
uestion of the week:
“I’m pleased,” Sharma told me later, “that several men are here. There’s a big need for male role for boys in Maple Ridge.” Sharma’s identified 14 kids – boys and girls – who could use mentors. They’re dealing with problems like depression, anxiety, eating disorders, suicidal thoughts, and even post traumatic stress disorder. She knows what they’re going through. “Memories can trigger PTSD for me,” she tells us. “When you’re all alone in the world, when you’ve lost all sense of self-worth and self-esteem, life seems hopeless. At 15, I was homeless. I remember three nights in Maple Ridge Park, thinking nobody cares.” The Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use Collaborative is advocating for a local clinic devoted to youth, but the psychological needs of kids at risk can’t wait. They need as much help as much empathy as they can get now, especially after the former federal government – by defunding overnight shelters for youth – forced closure of the Iron Horse Safe House. Sharma’s long-term goal is to create a new facility. A mentorship program is a good turn down the right road for this community, which is blessed by folks like those here today. They’re directors of CEED, teachers, parents, business people. They bring wisdom, skills to share, the goal of building a better place to live, and empathy. Mentors will do a lot for the kid they’re paired with. They’ll be role models, help these kids set realistic goals, and integrate

with society in a variety of positive ways. Self-esteem and confidence will grow as kids connect with their mentor and their peers. “Just saying, ‘I’m here for you,’ can be powerful and effective,” says Sharma. To be healthy mentally, said Adler, you have to feel you belong in society and, eventually, give back to it. When governments decide what programs to fund, that should be their criteria. At-risk kids will make contributions to society when it loves them. Sharma is living proof of that. Recently, she shared a personal story with Christian Cowley and I. “I’ve never told you this, Christian,” she began. “I had visited all the organizations I could think of that might be able to help me get this program started before I knocked on your door. You didn’t know me, and I didn’t have an appointment, but you stopped what you were doing, got me a chair, and talked to me. It was something nobody else had done. You cared. I could see that. That was really emotional for me.” Cowley has been an empathetic listener as long as I’ve known him. He looks at you. When you talk, you have his uninterrupted attention. He works to understand what you’re saying and feeling. He’s an active listener. Sharma would like more volunteers for her program.
