Santa drops in on special kids Jacob Zinn News Staff
Santa usually travels by sleigh and reindeer, but last Thursday, he made an exception. Saint Nick took a Bell 429 C-GCQR helicopter for his annual visit to the Queen Alexandra Centre for Children’s Health in Saanich. Since 2001, the Coast Guard has arranged for Santa to visit the integrated child care programs in a helicopter, giving out teddy bears to about 60 children, many of whom have special needs. The yearly drop-in by Santa was started 15 years ago by Darcene Thirkell, superintendent of operational business with the Coast Guard, when her two children attended the child care program at the G.R. Pearkes Building. “It occurred to me that parents of children with special needs may find it difficult to take their children to see Santa in a busy mall,” said Thirkell of the inspiration behind the visit. While her children have grown up, Thirkell and the Coast Guard have continued the tradition of flying in Santa via helicopter. Jessica Woollard, communications officer with the

Cohen Mazzoni, 4, was delighted to meet Santa on Thursday when Kris Kringle himself dropped by the Queen Alexandra Centre for Children’s Health. After making a stylish entrance in a helicopter, Santa visited dozens of kids at the centre’s child care programs, delivering teddy bears from his bag of toys. Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island, said the drop-in gives the children an opportunity to meet Santa that they otherwise might not have. “Not all the children in the programs have special needs, but for those who do, it’s a lovely way for them to see Santa in a familiar environment,” she said. “A lot of the children that attend the child care programs are siblings or they’ve heard about this incredible thing that the Coast Guard does by bringing in Santa by helicopter. There’s a lot of excitement – it’s such a unique way to bring Santa to children.”
The event featured snacks and music, with the kids singing Christmas songs as they waited for Santa to come to their classrooms. 1. Christmas morning can be a special time for many Victoria residents. Even if you don’t celebrate the holiday, many still have the day off to relax, recuperate and spend some time with loved ones. But we often forget there are those who still have to get up and go to work the morning of Dec. 25. And for those that do, it can be a challenging day. “It’s not a positive experience,” says Dr. Christopher Morrow, one of 36 emergency room doctors that split their time between
Victoria General Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital. “The emergency room is not a happy place (on Christmas) … It’s not really a happy place in general.” In his 12 years of practicing emergency medicine, the Oak Bay resident has missed about half of the Christmas mornings with his family. The fact his children are getting a little older – they’re now 12 and 14 – doesn’t make it any easier, he says. “It’s one of the real sacrifices … It really hurts when you leave your kids on Christmas morning.” That goes for everyone working at hospitals, not just doctors. “Generally, it’s a
very hard time in health care … Holidays really accentuate the social problems we have.” Emergency rooms actually see a small bump on and around Christmas Day in cases related to social issues, Morrow says, such as excessive drinking, domestic abuse, suicide attempts and mental illness, as well as frail elderly patients brought in by visiting relatives who are concerned about their health. “You see the loneliest of the lonely,” he says, adding it is a harsh reminder of the hard realities of others’ lives. “The emergency room really is the end of the safety net.”
Some of that slight increase in patients is due to family physicians being away, primary care clinics having reduced hours and other services being closed for at least a portion of the holiday. But Morrow says staff try to make the best of it by helping each other out. “Some people don’t mind it,” he says, adding that people without small children will often trade shifts to help more families spend at least the morning together. “You just work around it … you modify your celebrations.” PLEASE SEE: Many must work on Christmas Day, Page A5

Fires tear through a pair of Saanich homes Travis Paterson News Staff
If not for a Saanich Police officer’s presence in the area on Sunday morning a vacant residence on Short Street would likely have burnt to a far greater degree. The officer was on patrol in the area of Uptown when they called in the structure fire at 5:27 a.m. for the boarded-up, two-storey residential home at 851 Short St. “The officer witnessed an extensive amount of smoke, [with a section of the house] engulfed in smoke and flames,” said Saanich Police Sgt. Steve Eassie. “It appeared at some point someone had entered the home through a boarded-up entry but we don’t know when.” Saanich Fire responded with a command unit, two engines, two ladder trucks, a rescue unit and 18 firefighters and encountered heavy smoke and fire. They were able to identify the “seat of the fire” and extinguished it immediately, Saanich Fire said in a release. Neighbouring residents

remaining on Short Street, which features condo and commercial developments. Eassie confirmed the residence
has been without electricity since 2014. Saanich Fire Department responded to a Ten Mile Point
house fire on Monday afternoon in the 3700 block of Arbutus Ridge. Damage is estimated at $300,000 for the single family home, which was filled with thick smoke. Crews extinguished the base of the fire and remained on scene for two hours locating and extinguishing hot spots. The house was unoccupied at the time. It’s believed the fire started at the centre of the house and was limited by a lack of oxygen. It is under investigation at this time. The two fires join a short list of Saanich’s bigger fires from 2015. An October fire gutted the carport and damaged parts of a home on Cedar Hill Cross Road. The playground at Copley Park was struck by arsonists twice in the early summer, with the second incident so hot it levelled the metal. A fire also broke out at the scene of a likely murdersuicide on the 4900 block of Cordova Bay Road in April. A Gorge neighbourhood fire on Austin Avenue from September 2014 also remains unsolved.
Santa Scoot helps fill a dream Alison Morgan For the Saanich News
Saturday brought an old tradition from Verona, Italy to the downtown streets of Victoria. Luca Orlandi of Famoso Pizzeria on Johnson Street, organized the first annual Santa Scoot; a parade of scooters through downtown Victoria. It ended with the scooters arriving in Market Square, where the festivities included gingerbread men, ‘Frozen’ princesses and a live band. When asked why he wanted to organize the event, Orlandi said, “On Christmas Eve in Verona, there is a big motorcycle parade through the streets and all the riders collect toys from local businesses for the children. It is a big celebration.” Orlandi contacted the Help Fill a Dream Foundation and arranged to donate a portion of the proceeds from every pizza sold that day to the foundation. “It is something I wanted to
do for the community of Victoria and to help the kids. Help Fill a Dream was a natural choice for me because they are about helping families and children,” said Orlandi. “Everyone on the streets were smiling and waving. It was just wonderful to see their happy faces.” As the Santa Scoot involved transportation with two wheels, Help Fill a Dream chose to incorporate a ‘Dream Reveal’ of a bicycle during the event for sixyear-old Andrei Marti of Saanich, who was diagnosed with Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes last summer. “Andrei has been biking since he could walk. It’s a huge part of his life and he wants to do it all the time,” said mom Annelies Browne. “We go to the free-ride park and the big boys there told Andrei that the Rocky Mountain bike is the best, so he’s been wishing for one this Christmas.” When Santa arrived in Market Square with his dream bike, Andrei was overjoyed. “I can’t believe it,” Andrei said with a
smile. “I like biking a lot. This is really, really cool.” When asked what his favourite part about the new bike was, Andrei said, “The handle bar break…I’ve never had one before.” Since his diagnosis, Andrei has become an active volunteer for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. He has also participated in the Pedal for the Cure fundraiser, when he cycled for three hours. “Cycling helps Andrei manage the diabetes by keeping him active. Help Fill a Dream is an incredible foundation and we’re so grateful for this gift,” said Browne. “We’re going to be very busy at the bike park now.” Help Fill a Dream is an Islandbased foundation that helps children with life-threatening conditions fulfill their dreams. The foundation relies solely on funds generated by the community. To make a donation or any enquiries, email contact@ helpfilladream.com or call 250382-3135.

OUR VIEW
Christmas a time to give of ourselves Christmas Day is upon us. And while the holidays are a special time for most of us, a time to gather with family and celebrate all that we have, for some, the holidays can be a difficult time. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed during the holiday season. Between work or school, family commitments, and the added stress of Christmas shopping, decorating, cooking, travel or welcoming relatives, it is all too easy to throw up your hands and say ‘To heck with it!” For others, the Christmas season can bring back painful memories or serve as a reminder of something now missing from their lives. The urge to simply crawl into a hole – or at least a bundle of blankets on the couch – and watch terrible movies on Netflix until the season is over is understandable. So as we gather to celebrate the Christmas season, make sure to reach out to those around you who might not find the holidays a happy occasion. Here are a few hints to help spread a bit of Christmas cheer to some of those who may be in need. Invite someone that you know might not have family nearby to your dinner table or holiday festivities. The more the merrier, right? If you can, facilitate transportation. Sometimes accessibility is the biggest barrier to joining activities. Take time to visit family members who are living alone or in care facilities. While you are there, maybe pack along an extra flower or gift you can give to another resident you think could use some company. If you have time, sit with them too. If you cannot go visit family members or friends who may be feeling alone, find the time to give them a call. It’s worth the effort to make the holidays a time for all around you to enjoy. And what better gift could there be? What do you think? Give us your comments by e-mail: editor@saanichnews.com or fax 250-3862624. YOUR VIEW
Unfounded fears surround climate change debate The letter written by Ed Wiebe in the Dec. 16 Saanich News illustrates the hype and unfounded fears some of your readers have come to accept as “truth” regarding the subject of climate change. His reference and criticism to writings by Tom Fletcher on this subject is totally off base. Tom’s writings and viewpoints are frank, logical and factual as well as fair and unbiased. He’s a great asset and valuable contributor for the Saanich News. There is much hype and erroneous information floating about regarding climate change. Unfortunately, much of the so-called “science”, predicting dire consequences for all of us, is not based on proven, credible, scientific evidence and those researchers who have different opinions, founded on accurate scientific findings and research, are quite often prevented from speaking out. For example, we were told for years by the “experts” that our climate is warming at an alarming pace due to carbon dioxide buildup in our atmosphere – all of it caused by human activities. More accurate and credible research is showing that the warming trend has actually slowed; no significant increase in global temperature has been noted for the last 18 years. The increase in carbon dioxide
Oliver Sommer Publisher 250-480-3230 osommer@blackpress.ca
Dan Ebenal Editor 250-480-3262 editor@saanichnews.com
buildup during the last century has occurred as a result of varying amounts of solar energy. The slight increase in heat energy emanating from the sun and warming our planet has promoted a prolific growth of micro organisms in the oceans which in turn have generated increased amounts of carbon dioxide, added to our atmosphere, as a result. Man’s contribution to increased carbon dioxide levels present in our atmosphere is actually less than one per cent during the last 50 years. Climates have historically fluctuated for centuries. This is a natural process. There was a period lasting several years, during the Middle Ages, where temperatures plummeted to extremes. It became so cold that people actually believed that another Ice Age period was about to start. This event occurred well before the Industrial Revolution, proving that this particular climate change had absolutely nothing to do with man’s industrial activities. The scientific community has never been able to explain this historic event, nor link this to human activities. Recent knowledge that our Earth’s polar ice caps have stopped melting and are again rebuilding is being suppressed. Why? Is this also an “inconvenient truth”?
Travis Paterson Reporter 250-480-3279 reporter@saanichnews.com
Jacob Zinn Reporter 250-480-3212 jacob.zinn@saanichnews.com
Lastly, people should be skeptical as to what governments are saying about climate change. Historically, the people have been lied to time and again by governments everywhere and for all sorts of reasons. We should all remember the warning, propagated by government during the late 1970s, that the world would permanently run out of oil within a decade. Who promoted this bit of total bunk? What economics were involved and who benefitted? We should continue to question the science regarding climate change and its implications for all of us. I’m inclined to disbelieve the official climate science propaganda, offered by the “experts” unless the facts regarding it are backed by proven science only, nothing else. Arthur Ooms Saanich

Many must work on Christmas Day Continued from Page A2
It’s not just hospital workers who have to modify their celebrations at Christmastime, he says. Some patients can actually help lift spirits in the ward when they come in with a minor injury relating to the holiday. That brief stay before returning to their holiday festivities can often provide a bright moment in an otherwise gloomy day. However, creating and maintaining the holiday vibe around the ER can be challenging. While nurses can sometimes get away with wearing a Santa hat or a fun sweater, Morrow says, doctors can’t, especially if they have to deliver a serious diagnosis or tell a family member a patient has passed away. Regardless whether
the family celebrates Christmas or not, the impact of such news isn’t lessened by
wearing a goofy hat. “It just doesn’t work,” he says. There’s a time and a
place for holiday cheer, but the ER may not be that place, especially on Christmas morning.

Giving to the homeless a year-round tradition for Kuku’s Jacob Zinn News Staff
It may be the holiday season, but the spirit of giving is year-round for Randy and Anita Madahar at Kuku’s. Every Wednesday and Sunday, the delivery and takeout restaurant brings piping hot food such as butter chicken, lasagna and shepherd’s pie to the homeless in Victoria. The husband-andwife team started feeding the needy after friends of his from the Soprano’s Karaoke Sports Bar and Grill began cooking food for the homeless. “Five years ago, my friend Kenton, he started doing chilis every Wednesday and Sunday,”

It doesn’t matter what kind of weather it is, they stand out there because they know at 7:30, something is going to show up at that street.” Randy said usually 40 or 50 people turn out at the corner of Balmoral and Cook, as well as at Meares and Quadra by Pioneer Square, for food from Kuku’s. Additionally, the Madahars and their crew of volunteers hold events around holidays throughout the year to give to the homeless. On Dec. 13, they catered a

Yet another sporty coupe crossover hits the market Will any manufacturer without plans for a small crossover please stand up? Barely a month seems to go by without a manufacturer announcing a new model aimed at the hottest market segment – crossover vehicles. These vehciles are becoming as ubiquitous on our roads as minivans became in the 30 years following their introduction in 1984. It shouldn’t surprise because they check all the boxes for today’s drivers: they sit higher than the family sedan a thus providing a commanding view of the road and provide the seating and stowage required by the modern active family. In appearance, they are modelled on much more expensive and larger sport utility vehicles and can even by Keith Morgan mimic an SUV’s roadholding abilities – to a degree – in poor weather, when equipped with all-wheel drive. Honda’s compact CR-V has been a winner for years and its prestige division – Acura – has solid performers in the larger MDX and compact RDX. It has been slow to introduce a subcompact version but the allnew 2016 Honda HR-V will likely cut into the market carved out by other lesser manufacturers, especially with a base sticker price under $21,000 (loaded EX-L navi - $29,990). If your family includes active teenagers (they aren’t all that way) this car is not for you, look at a CR-V or one of its many competitors. However, if you are a twosome or have one or two youngsters this may well fit the bill. The HR-V has the now obligatory coupe look, without sacrificing rear headroom, reasonable leg space in the rear, and even with the seats up there’s ample stowage for the Big Shop and weekends away. Space is maximized by mounting the fuel tank in the centre rather than the rear and the remarkable foldaway second row seating. The official specs reveal 2,835-litres of passenger volume (LX) and 1,665 of cargo volume with the second row seats down. I’ll

$ stick with my recommendation on family size, no matter how big Honda says it is! The base LX is very well equipped and the EX and EX-L Navi trims ramp up the specs in luxury and technology. Standard safety features in all models include vehicle stability assist with traction control; an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS); side curtain airbags; dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags; and front side airbags. Thanks to its so-called Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure with enhanced frontal protection it’s also achieved the highest overall score for collision safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If that’s not enough for the safety conscious, extras available across the range include LaneWatch, Hill Start Assist, Multi-Angle Rearview Camera with Guidelines, Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning, with the latter two available in EX-L Navi only. Not a big fan of many passive safety systems as my theory is they encourage lazy driving habits and inattention. The interior features belie the HR-V’s frugal price tag. Soft-touch materials abound and the stitch lines, brushed chrome and piano black highlights are more typical of the Acura marque. Instrumentation is clear
and controls logically placed. On the road, you can expect more than adequate performance, which may sound like I’m damning it with faint praise but I’m not. Honda describes it as having a “sporty performance” but to me that’s a buzz phrase all manufacturers trot out. However, if you want a ‘sporty looking’ machine that gets up to speed in a respectable time, accelerates easily when passing, without inducing whiplash, then this should be on your test drive list. It’s grippy on the road, handles well in the corners without lurch, and overall is pleasant to drive in the city and on a road trip. You will get decent fuel economy from the 1.8-litre 4-cylinder 16-valve SOHC i-VTEC engine, which pumps out 141 horses. The engine can be paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) or a shortshifting 6-speed manual transmission, on LX and EX models with 2WD. Drive efficiently and you could achieve 6.7L/100 km on the highway (8.3 city) in the 2WD CVT version. The manual stick economy is rated 9.3/7.0 L/100km (city/hwy). A repeated word about CVT: contrary to many of my colleagues I like today’s CVT. Much smoother than earlier iterations.

Saanich author offers tips for selling your home Jennifer Blyth Black Press
First impressions really do make a difference when it comes to selling your home. Even in today’s competitive market, taking a little extra effort to put your home’s best face forward will help you sell quickly and for top dollar. For some, that means hiring a professional, but with a little time and thought, you can also do much of the work yourself, says Gail Cole, of All Things Balanced. Cole, also a certified feng shui practitioner, offers tips designed to help them sell “quickly, easily and with less stress.” Cole has put her ideas into an e-book: Create that ‘Buying’ Feeling when Selling Your Home. “It’s a step-by-step how to get ready; a room by room (look) at what can stay and what has to go because not everything can stay,” Cole said in an interview from her Saanich home. The top three areas Cole typically undertakes with clients are creating curb appeal, de-cluttering and de-personalizing, and overall cleanliness. “Creating good energy is important,” she said. “You can’t touch how things ‘feel,’ but when you walk into a home you know.” Cole’s approach is two-fold. First you want to help buyers see themselves in the home, and that means creating a welcom-

Creating a warm, inviting entry includes getting rid of the clutter, but also creating a welcoming setting, says Gail Cole, author of Create that ‘Buying’ Feeling when Selling Your Home. ing atmosphere that begins in the front garden and continues through the entry and inside. But it’s also about “de-personalizing” – removing the wall of family photos and instead hanging generic artwork that com-
plements the setting. The goal is to make it as neutral as possible, but still warm. Ensuring the yard is tidy and the home is clean, decluttered and in good repair will also give the impression that the home has been well-cared for, Cole notes.

Make sure the litter box is tucked away, the floors are swept and the recycling is tidy and organized out of sight. Otherwise, the impression for buyers is, “if it’s dirty, it’s probably been dirty for a long time,” Cole says. “If you have a cat, that’s OK, but put the litter away during a showing.” How long it takes to get your home ready for sale will depend on how you live in your home and how long you’ve been there. “You accumulate and if you don’t get rid of stuff, it does take time,” she says. It’s also possible to mitigate some of the negatives of a home with some simple touches. For example, the effects of a long narrow hallway can be eased with the addition of mirrors to reflect light and give the impression of space. “What are people first going to see when they first walk in; what’s their first impression going to be?” Cole asks. “In this hot market, if you’re not ready and it sits on the market, it becomes one of the those duds.” In addition to information about preparing your home for sale, Cole also offers tips and suggestions for choosing and working with a realtor and working through the overall process of selling your home, including your expectations, whether you’re comfortable with an open house, for example, and your emotional attachment to your home.
