Lee Pratt reflects on mayoral year past TRE VOR CR AWLEY

Legendary Canadian ski racer Nancy Green-Raine (left) joins Zoe Chore (middle) and Reece Howden (right) at a ski-cross qualifying event at Sun Peaks for the Youth Olympic Games. Chore and Howden won the right to be Canada’s representatives in the sport during the YOG, which is being held in Lillehammer, Norway from Feb. 12-21, 2016.

Another Cranbrook athlete is heading to the Youth Olympic Games in Norway. Following in the footsteps of India Sherret, a local ski cross racer who went to the same event a few years ago, Zoe Chore recently notched the same achievement, quali-
fying for the latest edition of the same event in February. Hosted at the former Olympic site in Lillehammer, Chore will be there with fellow Olympic hopefuls from around the world to compete in ski-cross and get a taste of the Olympic experience. “I think it’s really cool and
it’s great to see what the big stage looks like and what it’s like to experience the Olympics in a smaller forum. Also the pressure, just to get used to it more,” Chore said. In addition to young athletes, there will Olympic ambassadors—either current or former Olympic athletes—
mixing it up with the youth. In particular, Chore is looking forward to the opportunity to possibly meet or hear from Lindsay Vonn, a former downhill Olympic gold medallist and world champion ski racer.

It was a year of firsts for Cranbrook Mayor Lee Pratt, who—along with a slate of rookie city councillors—have tackled many issues to start his four-year term. As the year draws to a close, Pratt reflected on the accomplishments that city staff and council have made, while looking ahead to the challenges of 2016. Noting that he — along with almost every councillor who won a seat in the 2014 municipal election — was new to political life, Pratt singled out city staff for their patience in helping him and his colleagues to do their jobs. “It was a huge learning curve for all of us,” Pratt said. “But we’ve learned a lot in the last year and certainly we had a lot of support from city staff answering our many questions and dealing with our inexperience.” Immediately after the municipal election, the new mayor and council went into budget talks, where they canceled a $500,000 loan to the Cranbrook and District Arts Coun-

cil for planned renovations to the old fire hall and slashed a tax increase from a projected 5.77 per cent to only 2.58 per cent without cutting city services. That budget also included a one per cent dedicated road tax, as the city spent just over $3 million to fix up the road infrastructure and complete a asset report on the road and sewer networks of the city. “We have an asset management plan, which is an inventory of all our roads and the services below them,” said Pratt. “So now we can prioritize which ones can be resurfaced and which ones require full infrastructure replacement.

Going forward, that will help us decide what roadwork we’re going to do and how much major work needs to be done and how much we can grind up and replace.” On the topic of road repair, Pratt also noted the city picked up a new piece of equipment dedicated to pothole repair that did a lot of work on Cranbrook streets. He added that it’s been useful because of the ability to send out one single city worker to fix one single pothole, rather than waiting for a particular stretch of road to get in bad shape, which requires a truck and crew of three workers. “This way it’s a oneman operation, he can
go in there and fix the pothole rather than wait for six or seven of them,” said Pratt. Another big project that Pratt and council have been working on is an economic development partnership between Cranbrook and Kimberley. The goal is to attract larger industries to the region, Pratt said. “We’re targeting getting some industries to move here and we’ve got some good leads,” Pratt said, bringing up the purchase of the old Tembec properties by MGX Minerals. “We’ve already been in discussion with four different companies about locating here and three of them actually have synergies between them, so

if we get the first one in, I think the other two will come in quicker.” On Idlewild Lake, Pratt said the city is waiting on a grant application to get going on the replacement of the dam structure and a subsequent public consultation process. Moving into 2016, the city is also in early stages of revitalizing the Joseph Creek waterway. “We’re in the very
early stages of rehabilitating Josephs Creek right from the dam down, making it a showcase for the city, which it once was and should be,” Pratt said. Other housekeeping accomplishments include cleaning up old bylaws that don’t apply anymore and scrapping the two-tier recreation fees for city and out-oftown residents. In the new year, the

city is looking at extending the downtown revitalization tax bylaw to all businesses within Cranbrook, while council and staff are also looking to find ways to maximize the potential of Western Financial Place. And, of course, infrastructure is always on the mind. “We’re in budget talks right now, so we’re looking at a few areas where we can do more
infrastructure work. It has to be done and we’ve got to get going on that. Of course it’s expensive, but it’s first and foremost on our budget talks,” Pratt said. Though it’s been a whirlwind year for Pratt and the city council, everyone is rising to the challenge and doing their best to represent the best interests of Cranbrook. “We’ve got quite a bit
on the plate here, but we’ll take it as it comes,” Pratt said. “There’s always something that comes up during the year that we have to deal with. The council that we have now is very progressive-minded and that helps, so we just got to get the message out there to the rest of the world that we’re open for business and come talk to us.”

Zoe Chore off to Youth Olympics Continued from page 1
Chore qualified for the YOG after dominating an event at Sun Peaks Resort near Kamloops a week ago, competing alongside fellow Cranbrookian Katie Clark. “The original plan was to do three heats,” said Chore. “There were nine of us and within three heats you’re going to race almost everyone; mix it up to see everyone. After that, the top four would go into a final, and the winner of the final was going to go to Lillehammer.” However, there was some interference from snow fall and delays from a few injuries, which translated into only two heats that Chore won. Based on that race data, Chore was chosen by Alpine Canada. “I won both of the qualifying heats—the timed heats,” Chore said. “I was feeling pret-

ty good, but at the same time, in a ski-cross race, anything can happen, so I was still nervous that someone could make the pass.” At the top of the ski cross course, Chore and fellow athletes were joined by a legendary personality in Canadian ski racing, as Nancy Greene-Raine was present to encourage the athletes and give some pointers. “She had some really cool tricks of staying warm on the hill, which is always good to have, and another thing she said that was really cool was what makes a good racer,” Chore said. “She said fitness was really high up there and very important to be strong so you can save yourself.” While Chore was competing alongside Clark, her coach, John Blair was also present, who—in addition to teaching the technical
side of the sport—has helped Chore with the more intangible aspects. “He’s more of an alpine coach, which correlates a lot with skicross, but he has so much passion for the sport and so much passion for skiing and so much enthusiasm and love for the sport, it just helps drive my passion,” Chore said. Joining Chore as the ski-cross athlete representing Canada is Reece Howden, who hails for Chilliwack. “We had 15 athletes trying out in Sun Peaks, BC for the two Canadian spots for athletes competing in ski cross at the YOG,” said Willy Raine, the Ski Cross Athletic Director of the selection process. “The skill level these two athletes demonstrated was very strong and Canada will be very well represented with Reece and Zoe.”

fourth, which stopped the highway for three hours, was between two transport trucks. “Within a two hour span we had four accidents,” said Sgt. Will Thien of the Elk Valley RCMP. “It was still extremely icy between Sparwood and Coleman on the Alberta side. That usually gets that way because the trees cover the road. The sun comes out and melts the stuff on the road but doesn’t really dry anything.” Thien said that no one was seriously injured, but one accident did have a driver attended to by paramedics. “We started with one vehicle off-road five kilometers east of Sparwood. The vehicle flipped into the ditch, the three occupants were not injured. Shortly after that, a single vehicle did not roll, but went off the highway and landed in Michel Creek.

From Monday, Dec. 14 to Sunday, Dec. 20, Cranbrook RCMP responded to 112 calls for service. Staff Sgt. Hector Lee reported there were three alcohol related suspensions issued. One was a 90 day Immediate Roadside Prohibi-
tion (IRP), another was a three day IRP and the third was a 24 hour IRP. Police responded to three Mental Health Act calls. Lee said there were 16 motor vehicle accidents over the week. Most were outside of town on either Highway 93 and 95.
Lee said any injuries that occurred were non-life threatening. “If there were injuries then they were minor comparatively speaking,” he said. “The potential for injury was pretty bad I guess, especially with those corners around Highway 3.”
There were three drug seizures: Two were for marijuana, and one cocaine. There were also a couple thefts from motor vehicles. “The one that concerned me a little bit was along 22nd Avenue South,” he said. “It appeared to be a male that was going through several

Cranbrook RCMP and Fire and Emergency Services responded to a four-door sedan that crashed into the storefront window of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency office in the Save-On-Foods plaza. No injuries, driver included, were reported in the incident.

The two occupants of the vehicle did not sustain any injuries that we know of,” said Thien. “The third one was about 10:30 a.m. This driver was attended to by an ambulance but released with minor injuries if any.” Due to previous accidents being cleared from the highway the first transport was stopped waiting for the roadway to be cleared of debris. It is believed that due to weather conditions the second transport rear-ended the first transport. “I think what happened was the first truck was stopped because the highway crews and emergency services were dealing with the three collisions prior. By this time, the road was a bit wet and the sun was above the eastbound lane and caused some glare,” said Thien. “The second transport truck collided into the back of the first one. According to the transport that did the rear-ending there was some glare from the road in their eyes.” It’s believed that the second transport hit the first with speed. The driver of the second truck was brought to the hospital but soon released with what is believed to be minor injuries. “We do not have any exact speeds but the collision was witnessed by the Sparwood Fire Department and they estimate the speed to be 80 or 90 km. The cab was demolished and the driver had to be extracted by the firefighters and he was transported to the hospital for precautionary reasons,” said Thien. “It was determined the driver sustained only minor bruising and cuts, maybe a mild concussion but that is not for us to formally release because we do not know.”

Celebrate Christmas Presence
L
ast week, I mentioned the word “incarnation” in my column. The word comes from two Latin words, “in” and “carnis”, which means “flesh”. Christmas is the season when we celebrate the mystery of Incarnation. We celebrate our deep trust that God become a person. God became a body. On this Feast of the Incarnation, we celebrate a festival of “enfleshment”. If you’ll pardon a bad pun, Christmas truly is all about presence. It comes from John 1:14 which reads, “the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory.” The Word refers to Jesus, and earlier in the same chapter John reminded us not only that the Word was with God, but that the Word was God. At Christmas, we celebrate God’s presence with us. So why do so many Christians think that being spiritual is better somehow than the physical part of who we are? Spiritual guide Richard Rohr comments, “I find most mainline Christians to be quite ‘excarnational’ and moving opposite to the path of Jesus and trying to be “spiritual,” whatever that means.” Rohr goes on to remind us that Christianity is the “only religion in the world that believes that God became a body, became a human being: Jesus … Full incarnation is what distinguishes us from all other religions.” That’s why we get so excited at Christmas. Christian faith is a fully incarnational faith. God is present all around us. God is present in every part of creation. God is present in every one of us. God is present
in every moment of our days. In that sense, Christianity is the most material religion. Christians shouldn’t be trying to escape this world to reach some blessed place we call heaven. Rather, Christians should be living fully and abundantly here and now. We live in a world which is shot through with the presence and grace and glory of God. The material and the spiritual co–exist; they dance together in a grand waltz (or polka, if you insist) of faith and trust, of joy Rev. Yme and grace. That’s why the mystery of Woensdregt Incarnation is so important. It shows us just how deeply God loves creation. It tells us that all of nature is sacred. Plants and animals and human beings are windows into the soul of God. They show us the endless creativity, fruitfulness and joy of God The opening of John’s gospel proclaims clearly and joyfully that in Jesus, what existed from the beginning is now reachable, touchable, knowable, seeable and lovable. Human beings can’t fall in love with a concept. People can’t develop a relationship with something that is just pure energy. The gift of the Incarnation is that we have someone we can see, touch and love. When we see Jesus, we can begin to imagine who God is. We see Jesus reaching out with compassion to the people around him and we know something of the heart of God. We see Jesus challenging the status quo of his day, and we know something of the priorities of God. We see Jesus reaching out to heal and forgive, and we know something about the deep passion of God for the people at the margins of life. More deeply than that, we realize that
the boundary between what we like to call “sacred” and “secular” is so very porous that it almost doesn’t exist. The the sacred permeates all of life. As the Victorian English poet Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote, “The world is charged with the grandeur of God.” He saw God in everything: every whisper, every blow, every part of this amazing world in which we live. We can learn to become much more incarnational. We can learn to love the physical and to see signs of God’s presence in the material world. Let me quote Richard Rohr once more: “God comes to us disguised as our life through nature, sexuality, art, music, dance and poetry.” God is made known in relationships and art, through our very human bodies and in all of creation. So let me repeat that awful pun: Christmas really is all about presence. It is a celebration of God’s presence in us, through us, around us, in the midst of us, above us and below us. God is present in the furthest star and our next breath. God is as intimate as a lover’s caress and as delightful as the touch of a soft breeze on a spring day. It is also a celebration of our presence with God. In the same way as humanity and divinity mingled in Jesus, so it mingles in us. Flesh and spirit coexist. The divine and the human are intermingled in us. If we deny either part of who we are, we lose so very much. I wish you all a very happy Christmas, a time of pure merriment and deep joy. Enjoy your Christmas presence, however and whenever it comes. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Kootenay Ice face mountain at mid-season mark Taylor Rocca
To say the first half of the 2015-16 Western Hockey League regular season has been a challenging one for the Kootenay Ice might be a bit of an understatement. Carrying a record of 6-28-2-0 at the midpoint of the campaign, the Ice are last in the WHL and 10 points behind the Swift Current Broncos for 21st in the 22-team league. While many predicted this season might finally be the one in which 17 consecutive seasons of playoff hockey came to an end in Cranbrook, no one expected the retooling Kootenay Ice to be this far out of the picture come the holiday break. “Challenging is such a good word, but beyond that, it was just difficult,” said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Kootenay Ice. “A lot of change early, which is probably a bigger challenge than you expect at first with staff [changes]. “The huge setbacks with injuries — the timing of everything was really difficult. But there are nights when you’re pretty proud of the group and the way they compete, battle and put the effort forth. “With every obstacle, there’s an opportunity there somewhere. The opportunity for us and for a lot of our players is to really learn how difficult it is every day and how much better they need to prepare themselves.” After coming to the Ice from BCHL’s Merritt Centennials, the 32-yearold Pierce has done an admirable job in his first crack as a WHL bench boss. While a 6-28-2-0 record might suggest otherwise, what the youngest coach in the WHL has been faced with is nothing short of an Everest-sized mountain to scale through 36 games. In 2014-15, the Ice started the season 3-130-0 before storming on a 15-4-0-0 run leading up to Christmas, sparked by the return of centre Sam Reinhart and winger Tim Bozon. There wasn’t and won’t be any saviours of similar stature to save the Ice this season. If this club is going to claw its way back into the WHL playoff picture, it will have to do it all on its own with the pieces and players in the room.
While stars returned to help the about-face last season, the 2015-16 edition of the Ice has seen its stars slowly knocked from the sky, one after the other relegated to the sidelines, as injuries have piled up to derail the young squad. First, it was 20-yearold star Jaedon Descheneau shelved after only two games with a shoulder injury that eventually required season-ending surgery. Then captain and leading scorer Luke Philp missed a pair of games with a head injury, before returning only to be knocked out of action two games later with an ankle injury that also required surgery to repair. Winger Zak Zborosky missed extended time with a lower-body injury and only recently returned to action. Steady defenceman Tyler King, 20, never returned from off-season knee surgery and was erased from the roster in mid-December. Amongst all that, forwards Roman Dymacek, Vince Loschiavo, Max Patterson, River Beattie and Dylan Stewart have also missed time due to a host of other ailments. The circumstance has left Pierce with a revolving door of bodies and line combinations, providing challenges beyond what was expected heading into his first season as a WHL bench boss. Leadership While injuries to Philp and Descheneau have left massive holes in the top six, they’ve also provided opportunities for others take on bigger roles, play more significant minutes and grow as players. Centre Matt Alfaro has been, arguably, the most outstanding in that regard. “Matt Alfaro has been a positive bright spot for our group,” Pierce said. “Zak Zborosky, after missing the amount of time he did, came back and is playing with confidence and playing well.” Starting the season without a captaincy letter on his sweater, the 6-foot-2, 194-pound Alfaro quietly went about his business. After managing only one goal and four assists through 17 games up until the end of October, the native of Calgary provided added offence in November and Decem-
ber with seven goals and four assists in 19 games. Alfaro now finds himself sporting an alternate captaincy and, outside of finding his scoring touch, has been key in keeping players accountable in captain Philp’s absence. The youngsters Heading into the holiday break, the Ice roster is carrying nine rookies — accounting for nearly 38 per cent of the roster. “There’s been some huge learning curves for some guys,” Pierce said. “It’s hard to get a proper evaluation of [their development] just because of the challenges you’ve had with the number of bodies. “It’s so hard to judge it objectively without taking all factors into consideration. Really, when you do get your lineup back and you’re icing a full group every night, you’ll start to see who has truly progressed and who hasn’t.” Leading the charge is 17-year-old Noah Philp, the younger brother of captain Luke. While faced with a learning curve after graduating to the Western League from the Canmore Eagles of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, the younger Philp has shown strong strides since the puck first dropped in September. The 6-foot-1, 175-pounder managed four assists through 26 games to open the season. In nine games during the month of December, the former Canmore Eagle posted a goal and three assists. Like many of his fellow rookies, Noah Philp has been pushed into a more significant role earlier on than coach Pierce might have liked, but a big reason for the youngster’s growing production can be attributed to an increase in ice time, which he earned through sticking to the system, buying into the game plan and working for the respect of his coaches. Between the pipes, rookie goaltender Declan Hobbs has shown encouraging flashes as he works to establish himself as the successor to 20-year-old Wyatt Hoflin. Hobbs, 17, earned a nomination from the WHL for Canadian Hockey League Goaltender of the Week honours back on Nov. 23.
“[That nomination] have to start teaching pretty good run of games victory in a 5-2 home trigets washed away so them the new things where we had good umph over the Spokane quickly because of the we’ve been progressing nights.” Chiefs Oct. 2. Prior to that, October struggles [of the team],” as a team.” Next up That span of defeats featured a hard-fought Pierce said of his rookie The Ice return to goaltender. “You’ve got has featured four games 1-0 shutout of the Moose practice on Boxing Day to remember there’s in which the Ice had a Jaw Warriors at Western before hosting the Calfighting chance — either Financial Place (Oct.14) gary Hitmen on Sunday, been some good stuff.” a one-goal game, a two- and an exciting 5-4 over- Dec. 27 (4 p.m.) at WestThe 12-game rut Without question, the goal game with an emp- time win against the Ed- ern Financial Place. most challenging stretch ty-net dagger or a con- monton Oil Kings at Rex“When we come back within a tasking opening test in which the Ice all Place (Oct. 26). in, that will be a big part Finally, the Ice strung themselves in an half to the 2015-16 WHL8:00found of our a group Cbk. The many ways to recycle Christmas greeting cards · Turn this year’s cards into next year’s gift tags. Cut out circles, rectangles or any shape you desire. Otherwise, visit the scrapbooking aisle of your favorite craft store and purchase a paper punch to make easy work of cutting those shapes. · Transform a greeting card into a mini puzzle for a youngster. · Glue silly characters from Christmas cards onto a sheet of magnet. Then use these magnets for decorations next year.

· Use greeting cards to make wine charms for holiday entertaining. Guests can keep track of their glasses with ease. The Greeting Card Association says people purchase some 6.5 billion greeting cards every year. Of those, around 1.6 billion are Christmas cards. Exchanging cards is a great way for people to show their loved ones that they’re thinking about them, and such cards make for festive ornaments to display around homes. But when the holiday season ends, recycling those cards into other items can make good use of the paper resources and turn what’s normally a single-use item into an enduring trinket.
· Use cut-outs of cards to improve the appearance of plain gift wrap or bags. · Insert cut rounds of greeting cards into the inside of can lids to create crafty ornaments. · Make a paper Christmas tree from cutouts on greeting cards. · Encourage kids to make a photo collage from the cards they like. Mount their efforts on poster board and save for next year.

popsicle sticks can make clever gift tags. Poke a hole in the end and tie onto your gift. · Use a piece of fabric to wrap a present if you’re not too skilled with traditional paper. Fabric can be reused and is more durable, and you won’t run the risk of tearing an edge or poking a hole through it. This can be especially useful for oddly shaped gifts. · Newsprint tied with natural cord and some pine boughs is an inexpensive, classic-looking gift wrap. · Kraft butcher paper or brown mailing paper can be used in a pinch. Stamp images on the paper to customize the gift wrap and use ribbons and bows to further dress things up. · Always work on a hard, flat surface, as working on the floor or a soft surface makes it more difficult to control wrapping paper and you’re more likely to tear the paper. · Use a gift box or cardboard to create a firm container to wrap soft gifts. · Reuse old boxes to create a greeting card. Use a piece of ribbon and a bow and your newly created card as a thank-you or gift tag for future gifts. This is a great way to recycle during a season when excess is common.

The history behind some beloved Christmas songs
oliday traditions vary from family to family, but one component of the holidays that seems to be universally enjoyed is a good Christmas song. Music is piped throughout malls and stores to entertain shoppers, and favorite tunes may be on the radio or streamed through a digital music service as families decorate their homes. Many people may love Christmas songs and carols, but not everyone shares the same favorites. Thankfully, there’s no shortage of material when it comes to Christmas songs, ensuring there’s something for everyone. In 2014, Time magazine researched records at the U.S. Copyright Office to determine the most popular and most recorded Christmas songs since 1978. when copyright registrations were digitized. The following are some of the more beloved holiday tunes and a bit of history about each song.
of American origin. James Lord Pierpont, the song’s author, was inspired by the famous sleigh races of Medford, Massachusetts. · “Do You Hear What I Hear”: Noel Regney wrote this song as a call to peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The original context has long been forgotten, and “Do You Hear What I Hear” is now a staple of holiday celebrations.
· “Silent Night”: One of the most rerecorded songs in history (733 versions since 1978), “Silent Night,” was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber and put to lyrics by Joseph Mohr. It was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a village in Austria. Today’s version is a slow lullaby, but it’s believed the original was a dance-like tune in 6/8 time. · “O Holy Night”: This popular song was
composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847 to a French poem titled, “Minuit, chrétiens (Midnight, Christians).” Many notable performers, including Perry Como, Céline Dion, Josh Groban, Michael Crawford, and Lea Michele, have performed “O Holy Night.”
but his wife dissuaded him from using the word “tinkle.”
· “Silver Bells”: Now a Christmas classic, “Silver Bells” originally was written for the Bob Hope film, “The Lemon Drop Kid.” Songwriter Jay Livingston wanted to title the song “Tinkle Bell,”
· “Jingle Bells”: Although it has become one of the more popular Christmas songs, “Jingle Bells” really was written for Thanksgiving. It’s also one of the oldest holiday songs

· “White Christmas”: Irving Berlin believed his song “White Christmas” would be an instant hit. His prediction was correct, especially after singer Bing Crosby recorded it.
· “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”: James Gillespie wrote this tune while riding a subway and reminiscing about his childhood with his brother. It became a hit after being performed at the famed Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. · “The Christmas Song”: This classic Christmas song was written in 1944 by Bob Wells and Mel Tormé. It’s usually subtitled “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.” The song was written during a heat wave as a way
to think cool thoughts. It only took 40 minutes to write the music and some of the lyrics. Nat King Cole’s rendition of the song is among the more popular versions. Christmas songs are enjoyed and per-
formed year after year. Popular songs continue to endure and attract new fans.

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. Stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer. With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name! “Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!” As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky. So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.
Wishing you and yours a happy holiday season filled with love and plenty of Christmas spirit. We feel so blessed to be a part of this caring community. Thank you for your business and friendship. We look forward to seeing you in the new year!
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly! He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself! A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose! He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight, “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar
ARIES (March 21-April 19) As you put the final touches on holiday preparations, you might feel more discomfort than you thought possible. Someone close to you might be asking for a certain amount of attention, but you could be too busy. Keep communication flowing anyway. Tonight: Get into the moment. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Curb a tendency to be overly possessive or too touchy. Step back, and allow a loved one to run with the moment. You might have some last-minute details to take care of, which actually could make or break someone’s holiday. Tonight: Indulge a loved one rather than withdraw. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You’ll watch others’ reactions as the holiday season starts playing out. A family member seems to be more upbeat than he or she has been in a substantial period of time. How you indulge this person will make all the difference in what goes down.
Tonight: All smiles. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Understand what is going on with others. This holiday season has presented situations where you have needed to play a lesser role. You have experienced a certain amount of anxiety or discomfort regarding this change. Remain positive. Tonight: Life is about to get much livelier. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Start a conversation with someone whom you experience tension around. Get over the hump by allowing each of you to relax and connect. You might be spending a lot on a last-minute item that you have decided you want to purchase. Tonight: With your loved ones. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You might feel as if nearly anything is possible. You could find your interactions with someone in your daily life to be much easier. This person could be a boss, parent or older friend. Wherever you are, avoid taking on more responsibility. Tonight: A force to be dealt with. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
Tundra
You could be at a point where you want to run away. Don’t worry -- you won’t need to. Recognize how close to the finish line you are. You could be delighted by what someone at a distance decides to share. Expect a fast turnaround with your feelings. Tonight: Use your instincts. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Understand what needs to happen between you and someone else. Once the two of you click, you won’t want to separate, even if you have been in each other’s lives for a while. Do what you want for at least a little while; it’s your holiday too! Tonight: Beam in what you want. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You won’t want to cause any uproar, as it’s the holiday season and bridges are mending. Others observe your attitude and like what they see. You still might be upset about a matter that you have not discussed yet. Make a point of doing so in the near future. Tonight: Make plans. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You might wind up being responsible for a bit too much. You
do such a good job when others delegate errands to you that you could get stuck with too much on your plate. Try to say “no” more often. News heads your way that delights you. Tonight: You know the drill. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’ll feel like a kid, no matter what age you are. You could hit a snafu with a misunderstanding. Maintain a positive outlook. You will witness what happens when you smile more. Others are likely to return the same type of friendliness. Tonight: Get into your Santa gear. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You could be in a position of having to accept what is happening, even if it upsets you. You will opt for the well-being of the group instead of just yourself. Your caring ways will touch many people, and you will have time for a discussion in a few days. Tonight: Not too late. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My husband and I adopted our daughter from foster care when she was 12. We were told by the social worker that she had mental health issues, but we already loved her and went through with the adoption. The 10 years since have not been easy, but we thought she had grown to love us. She is a smart, beautiful girl, and we never regretted adopting her. She was the light of our lives. She is now in college in another town. Last week, she called and said she is never coming back to our house and no longer wants to have anything to do with us. We have tried to talk to her, but she either doesn’t answer the phone or hangs up when we press for answers about what is wrong. She is dating a young man who has expressed his dislike of us. We have learned through other people that they are getting married and his family is paying for the whole thing. We don’t know what to do. When she learned that we knew about the wedding, she did call and say we could come if we wanted, but it seemed a half-hearted invitation. I suspect if we had not been told by someone else about the wedding, she never would have told us herself. Should we go to the wedding or not? We do not know what kind of lies she may have told his family and are concerned it may be a problem. We love her and want to see her get married. What should we do? -- Brokenhearted Mother in Georgia Dear Georgia: Please go to the wedding. Don’t worry what the groom’s parents think. Prove them wrong. You need to be supportive of your daughter on her big day and let her see that you still love her enough to do this. Don’t cry or become angry or try to get her to tell you what’s wrong. Simply be happy for her as best you can. And we always worry about relationships where the husband or wife prevents the spouse from seeing family members. It could lead to an abusive situation. Please keep your eyes open and make sure your daughter knows you will always be there for her. Dear Annie: In a recent column, you mentioned people not feeling comfortable visiting a friend or relative in a nursing home. I have been a patient in a nursing home while recovering from surgery and I also worked in one where I had dealings with visitors. Most residents in these facilities like to have visitors no matter how long they stay -- even if it is only a few minutes. Any diversion from the regular routine is so welcome. Just talking a bit does a world of good. Other residents may join in, as they like to see a new face, too. I know folks feel uneasy because they have a problem seeing friends or relatives in a poor medical state, but it can be dealt with. Your visit can be the best medicine. -- Canaan, Connecticut Dear Canaan: Thanks so much for reminding readers how much short visit means to people in nursing homes. It can be a boost and a breath of fresh air, and your kindness means more than you will ever know. Denise Julien 1946 – 2015 Denise Marie Therese Francoise, born on October 20, 1946 in Matane, Quebec, passed away peacefully in Cranbrook, BC on Thursday, December 17, 2015 with her loving husband and son by her side, after losing her short fight with cancer. Denise was loving and caring and had a charismatic personality and an infectious laugh which made it easy to be comfortable around her. She worked at various jobs, some of which included being a store detective, a Sherriff, and a dispatcher with CP Rail - which she had recently retired from. Denise enjoyed socializing with friends and was an avid reader. She had a passion for curling and she was involved for many years with various curling associations. She coached curling and she was a very skilled and competitive player of the game. Denise was never afraid and was always willing to try a new adventure. She loved going on holidays, as told by her many trips to Cuba. She complained very little, but when she did and got mad, her favorite saying was “I’m going to write a letterâ€?, which of course never was written. Denise is survived by her husband Walter Schmidt, son Kristopher (Rita), mother Madeleine, brother Daniel (Sandra), sister Renee, granddaughter Kelsey, grandson Parker, nephew Robert (Kelly), niece Kim (Frank), greatnieces Venesa and Caprice and numerous extended family members and friends. Denise will be dearly missed by her family and friends. At Denise’s request, only a private family service will be held.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 19 – 9th Avenue South, Cranbrook, BC, V1C 2L9. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com
