ig news events often portray the urgency of a situation and make for dramatic images. But the biggest news stories do not always make for the best photos. While everyday events can be more challenging to photograph in a fresh way, the effort is worth it, as the images in this issue will attest. In the past year, multi-media journalists for the News have drawn readers into the stories of our communities with their compelling photos. Throughthelens portrays a cross-section of events, from the elections to festivals and fundraisers. We hope you enjoy the view.
In the news (Above) Jaelyn Sullivan and other kids ride their bikes on Cliff Avenue in October after the last tent was removed. (Below) Sarah Metzner, with her left arm wrapped after being bitten by a pit bull, in July.
(Above) Crews move historic houses from Vancouver to Hammond in August; (left) fire destroyed as many as eight units at the Harris Road Housing Co-op in Pitt Meadows in September.
The city dealt with a growing homeless camp on Cliff Avenue throughout the spring and summer.
Tanya Baulne and her 23-month-old son Samuel Poole swim at the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre in December, when the city decided against moving ahead with renovations while it considers building a new pool.
(Left to right) Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker and council were against the idea of amalgamating with Maple Ridge; Opponents to a new gravel quarry on Sheridan Hill protested outside MLA Doug Bing’s office in March.
A roadside memorial was set up along Woolridge Road, where a car flipped into a ditch in May, claiming the life of an 18-year-old Pitt Meadows girl.

ADOPT A PET 463-9511
Did you know that black cats spend an average of 20% longer in shelters than others? In their senior years it’s even longer. MR. JINGLES If you’re looking for tall, dark and handsome, with beautiful shiny hair, come meet Mr. Jingles. Poor Mr.Jingles had a family for 12 years in which he was the only pet. When his family had to move he was left with friends. Unfortunately the new home had other cats and a dog and this was too overwhelming for Mr.Jingles, who was used to a quieter household where he was king, so he was surrendered here in hopes of finding a more suitable home. Don’t let his mature age fool you… Mr.Jingles is in good health and is still a spry fella and can be playful at times. He enjoys his soft bed to curl up on and would make a great couch companion. If you would like to provide him with a loving retirement home, come meet him today. I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optometrist. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value.

asweage. Simply getting together has health benefits By Neil CorbeƩ ncorbeƩ@mapleridgenews.com ....................................................................................
Time spent with family and friends can actually improve the health of seniors, and a great new year’s resoluƟon would be to schedule regular visits to loved ones who might be vulnerable to loneliness. For many seniors living in a care home or receiving care at home, the holidays can be a parƟcularly lonely Ɵme of the year. The B.C. Care Providers AssociaƟon is encouraging everyone with a friend or family member receiving care to take some Ɵme out of their schedule for a special visit this holiday season. “This is truly a special Ɵme of the year for so many people,” said Daniel Fontaine, CEO of the BCCPA. “But research has shown it can also be a lonely Ɵme too – especially for seniors. That’s why it’s so important if you have a loved one living in a care home or receiving care at home, you set aside some Ɵme to
visit them over the holidays.” Of course, this is a year-round issue, but there are soluƟons in Maple Ridge. Social isolaƟon touches many areas of seniors’ lives, including acƟve parƟcipaƟon in the community and healthy aging. According to a 2012 study of the NaƟonal Academy of Sciences, both social isolaƟon and loneliness are associated with a higher risk of mortality in adults aged 52 and older. As people get older, their likelihood of living alone increases. With the aging populaƟon and approximately 25 per cent of the Canadian populaƟon to be over 65 in the next two decades, the problem of social isolaƟon is likely to increase. In a 2012 StaƟsƟcs Canada report, nearly one in four seniors reported that they would like to parƟcipate more in social acƟviƟes. StaƟsƟcs Canada’s 2008-2009 Canadian Community Health Survey also found that about one-ĮŌh of seniors felt leŌ out, isolated from others, or that they lacked companionship. conƟnued on page 14

asweage. Becoming Social conƟnued from 12
....................................................................................
Research shows that social isolaƟon can have detrimental eīects on health. As reported in a 2009 U.S. study using data from the NaƟonal Social Life, Health, and Aging Project, seniors who feel lonely and isolated are more likely to report having poor physical or mental health. One study notes isolaƟon is as strong a factor in early death as smoking 15 cigareƩes a day, while another notes loneliness can be twice as unhealthy as obesity, increasing chances of early death by 14 per cent. There are agencies in Maple Ridge and PiƩ Meadows that ensure there are social opportuniƟes for seniors to get out in the company of their peers, and even to arrange social visits. Ridge Meadows Seniors Society has a program called Seniors Helping Seniors that oīers a friendly visiƟng program, telephone buddies and a driving program. The visitors program is run by Bob Foster, who is a long-Ɵme volunteer himself, and he can be reached at 604467-4993. With his program, a volunteer will visit a person in the hospital or their own home to provide a friendly visit and conversaƟon. Clients can also arrange to simply phone and talk with a senior. Also through Seniors Helping Seniors, volunteer drivers will provide rides
within PiƩ Meadows and Maple Ridge, so seniors can get help with their drive to doctors appointments or be taken to the Maple Ridge Seniors Centre for their events and programs. A parƟal cost reimbursement to the driver is required. Please contact RMSS for more details. Maple Ridge-PiƩ Meadows community services has a BeƩer at Home seniors outreach and home support program that can be accessed at 604-4676911, extension 232. The group also oīers friendly visits, handyman services and transportaƟon services. There are also many local groups that oīer seniors acƟviƟes. • The Happy Walkers Club: contact Marilyn 604-463-8874, that leaves from PiƩ Meadows Heritage Hall on Saturdays at 9:15 a.m. • The Indoor Walking Club: the contact is Judy at 604-467-0693, and they meet at Valley Fair Mall on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. “If you have a family member in care who you haven’t seen in a while, one of the nicest giŌs you could give them during this season is a special visit or two,” said Fontaine. “This is one giŌ that won’t cost you a thing, but can lead to some very posiƟve health eīects for someone you love.”

Fun By The Numbers
Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!
Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must Àll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can Àgure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
The sandwich generaƟon is one to be admired. The juggling act between being a parent of young children and being a duƟful child to their own parents, all while keeping a full Ɵme job is something that many people are facing today and are quickly burning out. The most diĸcult aspect of this juggling act is honoring your roles. As so many parents will say, no maƩer how old a child gets, they are sƟll children. This is where the biggest dilemma stems from. As a parent ages, they require more support. As they require more support, a child is the Įrst one to volunteer. AŌer all, they raised you right? So as children of aging parents begin to support their aging parents, emoƟons run high. The
aging parents either feel as though they are a burden, or their pride won’t allow their children to help. The “I am your parent, you are my child” sentence conƟnuously arises as children ask their parents to take their medicaƟons, or eat proper meals. So how do children of aging parents maintain the relaƟonship while sƟll ensuring the best care? Caregiving children are the ones that know their parents the best. Their likes, their dislikes, how they feel most comfortable, and what will make them happy. Handing over the reins to someone outside the family is oŌen a struggle, but the majority of those who have asked for outside support have seen improvements all around. For example here is a short scenario about Darryl and Darla. Darryl was always the protecƟve father, saving his liƩle girl from monsters under the bed and building her that treehouse in the conƟnued on page 15

backyard. As he aged, he felt less strong, less conĮdent and having Darla constantly taking care of him, made him feel like a burden. Darla decided to get home care and once Chloe, the caregiver came into the picture, Darryl started to gain conĮdence. Chloe was taking him out for walks to get his legs moving and strong again, she was feeding him hearty meals to put more meat on his bones and his relaƟonship with Darla improved, because she was again, just his daughter. Her visits were to spend Ɵme with Darryl, not to care for him. Ethel and ChrisƟna had an amazing mother daughter relaƟonship. They were the best of friends. They used to go shopping all the Ɵme, they went for manicures and even went to the theatre together to watch the newest play that had come to town. A year ago, Ethel was admiƩed to the hospital and things changed in an instant. Ethel wasn’t geƫng invited to shopping trips or the theatre anymore. Ethel was feeling depressed and wanted to go home. It was then that ChrisƟna and Ethel decided to hire a caregiver to bring her back home. The caregiver was the best decision for the pair because now, as mother and daughter they have the freedom again to go on shopping trips, do family dinners and see shows once in a while, and have a caregiver there to help Ethel if she needs it. Few families are aware that medical and non-medical care exists beyond the four walls of the hospital. It’s important for family caregivers to uƟlize available resources in the community, like private

home care, to lessen the burdens of care. Unfortunately, it’s oŌen not unƟl there is a medical emergency that the topic of enhanced care is Įrst discussed. It can be challenging to broach the topic of increased care with parents. In fact, the number one fear of seniors is lost independence, which is why seeking help from experts at iniƟaƟng happy aging talks is so important. Instead of daughters and sons spending Ɵme as a caregiver to a parent doing things like preparing meals, providing transportaƟon and managing medical records, adult children can uƟlize care services so they can go back to being daughters and sons again. And when a parent’s health really begins to deteriorate, it is so important that Ɵme spent among loved ones is of high quality. Planning ahead for the needs of aging parents means we can celebrate aging instead of just cope with it!

God took him home, it was His will But in our hearts we love him still His memory is as dear today, As in the hour he passed away We often sit and think of him When we are all alone. For memory is the only friend That grief can call it’s own.
