The co-founders of the Ponderosa Music Festival are stepping up in a big way to help Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC (HFHSEBC) rebuild a home for a family in Westbridge. A donation of $5,100 has been received from the co-founders of the Ponderosa Music Festival, Kris Hargrave and Kia Zahrabi, to be used for the Winn family rebuild. They held a benefit concert in Vancouver in November with many of the bands performing that were scheduled to be at the Ponderosa Music Festival in August that was cancelled due to the wildfires. HFHSEBC made the announcement Monday in a press release stating that the donation will help rebuild the Winn family home that was destroyed in Westbridge during the August wildfires. A new and welcomed partner to the Winn family rebuild project is Harmony Homes, who have donated the costs of designing the home and providing the blueprints. The Harmony Homes Boundary representative is Bryan Fitzpatrick, and together with HFHSEBC will be finalizing the design for the new home in the near future. Harmony Homes has been designing and building homes in the Boundary region for many years and has an office in Grand Forks. HFHSEBC also acknowledged the

Residential property values in Midway and Greenwood rose by just over two percent, while in Grand Forks they fell by the same amount, according to notices of assessment sent to homeowners. Of the 25 communities in the South, Central and North Okanagan, only values in Enderby (at 3.26 percent) fell by more than those in Grand Forks, while Midway and Greenwood performed better than average in the South Okanagan Assessment Roll.

YEAR IN REVIEW

(GES) reported a need for volunteers and sponsors for its daily breakfast program. Money was needed to leverage funding already received from the Canadian charity Breakfast for Learning.

The Greenwood outdoor rink volunteers attended a Greenwood council meeting to ask council to rescind a 2013 motion to demolish the rink boards. Christopher Yates, Ray Harrison and Mike Goddard brought letters of support for the rink from Area E rural director Vicki Gee and the Greenwood Improvement Centre. The Boundary District Curling Club received a cheque for $2500 from the Heritage Credit Union’s Greenwood branch. The money went toward the purchase and installation of a replacement ice plant, after the one that had served the club since 1956 rusted so badly it had begun to leak. The board of education for School District 51 (Boundary) adopted the District Achievement Contract for 2014/15 at its regular board meeting for January. The report was presented to the

board by Superintendent Kevin Argue. It provided a snapshot of data that can help identify trends over a number of years and then sets targets for the future. The Boundary C 4H Club held its first general meeting of the year at the Rock Creek fairgrounds, where they elected the year’s officers. Dawson Harpur was re-elected as president, as was vicepresident Adele Fossen. Marijka van Kuik was elected as the new secretary, and Hanna Harpur stayed on as treasurer. Olivia Snyder remained the club reporter, Savanna Elliot became the safety officer and Danny Macfarlane and Lauren Fraser were designated snack and drink coordinators. February Wet weather kept the spectators away from the sixth annual Snowmobile Drags sponsored by the Kettle Valley Racing Association (KVRA). The riders were there, however, coming from across the province and south of the border to compete in numerous machine classes. The start was aided by the use of launch pads made from old snowmobile tracks

mounted on plywood. Boundary Central Secondary School’s grad class handled the food concession this year and were kept busy all day long. There was non-stop adult rec hockey action at the Midway arena on Family Day weekend, as 11 teams met for the 6th annual Oldtimers Hockey Tournament. There were six men’s and five women’s teams involved in the event, which was hosted by the Midway Oldtimers and the Midway Ice Maidens. The Kootenay Boundary Hardwood Classic Senior Girls Basketball Tournament was held at BCSS, with five teams participating: Nakusp Cougars, Selkirk Storm, Osoyoos Rattlers, Grand Forks Wolves and Boundary Central Roadrunners, who won the tournament. Roadrunners MVP’s were Maddie Baia, Kari Durban, Daniela Bergendahl and Daina Shaw. In a later tournament in Castlegar, BCSS finished third out of eight teams, with its only loss coming against eventual winners L.V. Rogers of Nelson. Midway Council agreed to endorse the Kettle River Watershed Management Plan, presented to council by coordinator Graham Watt. The plan

was aimed at monitoring the Kettle River watershed and raising awareness of its importance and promoting its conservation. The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary and Grand Forks have also expressed support of the plan. A new study showed that a majority of hotels in the Boundary support a hotel tax that would go into marketing tourism in the region. If the plan is adopted, a two percent levy would be added to all hotel and motel bills. Area ‘E’ director Vicki Gee held a town hall meeting at the Rock Creek fairground pavilion to brief taxpayers on the annual budget and five-year plan. Gee opened the meeting by providing a brief overview of how regional district government works and the services it can provide to rural residents. The grant-inaid budget is one of the services provided in the annual budget and Gee explained that she expected to have about $20,000 less in that fund in 2015 than the $105,000 distributed in the previous year. Gee said that she planned to work closely with organizations that apply for money and try to get people to plan ahead so that she would have a better idea at the beginning

of the year how much aid groups would be applying for. Water was a major topic of discussion, as attendees were encouraged to comment about that issue. One resident expressed concern that water meters might one day become man• See YEAR IN REVIEW page 6

1. Make if automatic With a biweekly or monthly pre-authorized plan, you can avoid the rush before the contribution deadline and benefit from tax-deferred growth on your contributions throughout the year. If your workplace offers a group a RRSP, sign up. Contributions can be deducted before calculating payroll taxes, lowering the taxes withheld from your paycheque. Some employers also match contributions. 2. Contribute more during peak earning years If you are in a high tax bracket, consider maximizing your contributions to benefit from the tax deduction. Plan to withdraw in retirement when your income and tax rate are likely to be lower. 3. Consider an RRSP Loan1 If you have excess RRSP contribution room, you may want to consider an RRSP loan so you can make a larger contribution to your RRSP during the first 60 days of the year. You then use your tax refund to repay some or all of your loan. The result is more money working for your sooner. 4. Consider making your contribution to a spousal RRSP A spousal RRSP is an RRSP that is opened by your spouse or common-law partner, but that you contribute to – and you 1 Borrowing to invest in an RRSP may not be appropriate to everyone. get the tax deduction. When your spouse or common-law partner withdraws the money, he or she pays any taxes due, as long as your most recent spousal contribution wasn’t made this year or in either of the previous two years. This income-splitting strategy can save your household taxes before and after retirement. 5. Top up whenever you can Think about contributing raises, bonuses, tax refunds and extra cash flow after you pay down a debt. At the very least, boost your annual contributions by the inflation rate. 6. Plan for more than retirement You can borrow funds from your RRSP to buy a qualifying home through the Home Buyers’ Plan or to pay for qualifying educational programs through the Lifelong Learning Plan. You do not have to pay tax on these withdrawals as long as you repay the money to your RRSP according to a set schedule. Tough times On November 24, 1992, Queen Elizabeth II delivered a speech in London’s Guildhall that included a description of that year as her “Annus Horribilis.” Her Majesty had endured a number of personal crises during the previous eleven months, including the divorce of her daughter Anne from Mark Phillips and the separation between son Prince Andrew and his wife Sarah, Duchess of York, Her general disdain for 1992 was amplified by her daughter-in-law Diana’s publication of her tell-all book Diana: Her True Story, which revealed the unhappy truths of the princess’s marriage to Prince Charles and, ultimately, the near-destruction of Windsor Castle, which suffered significant damage due to fire. For the Boundary, 2015 may well have been it’s own horrible year, caused not by family scandal but, rather, by the wrath of Mother Nature, who decided to effectively deny most of the province moisture for several months, culminating in a fire season that rivalled the worst in recent memory. Pastures were tinder dry, putting a lot of stress on the grass and making the life of a farmer even more challenging. This resulted in skyrocketing hay prices in the fall; small square bales, in particular, were scarce and at a premium. The Rock Creek fire, of course, was the most devestating event of the year, which, for many, made 2015 a year very much to forget. 30 homes were lost to the blaze, though there were no injuries to humans, which most consider somewhat miraculous. Some decided not to rebuild, due to various circumstances, but for those that are, their new homes will be poignant reminders of a day that will likely be forever etched in our minds. It was, however, another great year to be a volunteer, especially post-August 13. So many people dropped seemingly everything to help those affected by the fire, surely making a Boundary volunteer a shoe-in for a British Columbia Community Achievement award. Nominations for the awards close on January 15, so come on, Boundary residents, step up and nominate one of your own!

Looking forward to a new year

With the New Year comes an opportunity for renewal; a fresh start that rises from the ashes of the previous annum. For some, the slipping of 2015 into the annals of history will be welcomed, while others may look back at the last twelve months with fondness.

Reflecting on the events that took place this past summer with the Rock Creek/Westbridge Fire, many of our family and friends to the west have suffered so much personal loss, many still suffer from other issues related to the fire. For the rest of us there is a feeling of sadness for our Rock Creek/Westbridge family, and the loss from the destruction to that area will be in all of our hearts and minds for a very long time. The devastation of this fire also brought together a wave of incredible support from many volunteers, residents, businesses, and organizations from our community, the communities of the boundary area and beyond. Each of you played a very important role; with your assistance you ensured excellent care to the evacuees and to the success of the Midway Reception Centre, we

can say this would not have happened without your efforts and incredible generosity. For this, we thank each and every one of you for your dedication of time, support and generous contributions to the Midway Reception Centre, what a wonderful feeling it is to know we can count on each other for support when it matters most. Thank You!!!

Two thousand fifteen was a year of beginnings and Country wide attention for the Village of Midway. Council began its first year of the newly lengthened 4 year term. Council started the year in the usual way, holding planning meetings that informed the Budget process. We than presented our Fiscal plan at our Public Budget Meeting. Our plan was an ambitious one including beginning a process that we hope will see the needs of the Community Hall addressed, beginning work at the Medical Centre that will ensure it remains a sound building into the future by fixing a retaining wall and drainage issue, and beginning work to upgrade one of Midway’s most popular destinations, River Front Park. Although we got off to a decent start working toward our goals, most of those plans were delayed significantly as staff worked overtime to help accommodate the needs of those displaced by the Rock Creek fire. Things eventually settled back into routine we managed to complete just about all our projects before the end of the year, with the outstanding work to be completed early in the new year. The fire saw Midway become the center of attention as we worked to provide all the things needed to deal with the Rock Creek fire. We became home to those displaced by and fighting

the fire. We became a place to turn to for family and press looking for information and answers. We became the gathering place locals, heads of state and others caring enough to offer their help could come to connect. The one thing we did not become was overwhelmed. Local Emergency services, Village staff, and local volunteers performed extremely admirably during the fire receiving many accolades from far and wide. Once again this community and area proved how giving and dependable we are. The other major beginning in 2015 was West Boundary Community Forest. WBCF began its first full year of operations this year, and although they are only just beginning to see the results of the first year of work, all indications are that the Community Forest will help our region have an impact on, and profit both economically and socially from forestry in our area. On behalf of Council and Staff I would like to thank you for your support and continued interest in our wonderful community and wish you all the best in the New Year.

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year with many wonderful new beginnings in 2016! Penny Feist, CAO/Village of Midway Midway Reception Centre Manager Cathy Riddle, ESS Designate Midway Reception Centre

YEAR IN REVIEW datory on rural wells. Alan Stanley, General Manager of Environmental Services for the district, responded by saying that for many years there has been a lack of protection for ground water. The province passed the Water Sustainability Act the previous year, but regulations for it were still being drafted. Stanley noted that this was a provincial initiative and outside the authority of the regional district. Several questions came from residents living in the Sidley Mountain area, where owners of Miller Springs have made an application to the Agricultural Land Commision (ALC)

for changes to their operation. Resident Don Halverson asked if the regional district had any authority or jurisdiction in such applications. He added if the system is capable of handling that, and who has the authority and capability to find out whether or not the groundwater system is capable of that level of water extraction. Gee acknowledge that the issue is a complex one and that she had been in conversation with numerous local officials, with the lack of community planning or zoning in much of Area E an apparent hurdle. March

Randy Kappes, Mayor of Midway High winds lifted the roof off Greenwood’s My Udder Store in early March. The violent gusts of wind lifted the sheet metal roof as well as some of the trusses, twisted and crumpled it and would have tossed it all into Deadwood Street. Charles Houle and Bertha Williams of Norbert Recycling attended a Midway council meeting to discuss several items. Houle explained his vision of setting up recovery sites in West Boundary communities that could create jobs while keeping recyclable waste out of landfills.

Boundary residents come out to listen to Anarchist Mountain Community Association president Mark McKenny and resident Nick Marty deliver a case againts the twotiered rate structure implemented by FortisBC in 2012, which they claim discriminates against those who do not have access to cheaper natural gas.

West Boundary figure skater Emily Stewart won a gold medal at the Star Skate Super Series in Kelowna. Stewart was skating with the Osoyoos based Sunbowl Figure Skating Club, which brought home three medals in total.

YEAR IN REVIEW

Water failed to finish in the top three at this year’s Berkeley Springs Water Tasting competition, which it won in 2012. The water did, however, make it into the final round of the contest.

Boundary C 4H members held their annual Speech Night at the Rock Creek Fairgrounds. This years senior winners were Marijka van Kuik in 1st, Megan Ewing in 2nd, Adele Fossen in 3rd and Sarah MacDonald in 4th place. Junior winners were Jade Fossen in 1st, Hannah Harpur in 2nd, Matthias Bergendahl in 3rd and Olivia Schneider in 4th.

Greenwood council finalized plans to upgrade its ball park through the use of grant money. Improvements approved included new dugouts, new concession facilities and equipment and a fire pit area. Monies totalling more than $60,000 was allocated to the project.

Brian Foy, principal of the four West Boundary elementary schools, announced a change in those schools’ report card format, citing a need for educators to move away from the traditional methodology of forcing students to memorize a vast number of facts and then regurgitate that information in ensuing tests and exams. The new format moves the focus from memorization to implanting ideas and concepts in each of the subjects being taught.

The Heritage Credit Union awarded the Midway and Beyond Theatre a second installment of $4700 on a three year grant program that is allowing the theatre to purchase a portable stage outfit. The stage can easily be moved out of the way when the hall

is not being actively used for a theatre production.

April New fishing restrictions on the Kettle River system intended to help protect the dwindling trout population went into effect on April 1. The main Kettle was scheduled to be closed entirely to fishing from July 25 to Aug. 25, while the West Kettle River was earmarked for closure during the entire month of August. April was daffodil month across the nation. During the month, Canadian Cancer Society volunteers raise vital funds for the fight against cancer, and area residents Anna Anderson and Kim Lindseth presented Midway mayor Randy Kappes with a daffodil lapel pin to signify the beginning of the campaign. The Kettle Valley Golf Course opened it’s gates for another season, welcoming Sam Hall as its new clubhouse manager, replacing Krisi Goddard, who moved into the grounds keeping department. Hall joined manager Aaron Rexin in welcoming all members and non-members back to the club for another enjoyable season of golf. Several residents in the area around the Miller Springs water bottling plant in the Sidley Mountain area of Bridesville called for a study of the aquifer prior to approval of the plant’s expansion. Midway and Beyond Little Theatre presented a hilarious production of Nana’s Naughty Knickers, which attracted near-capacity audiences to each of four shows.

At the bi-monthly Greenwood council meeting, it was disclosed that legal fees hit $11,000 for the month of March, monies paid to the law firm retained by the city to manage the ongoing dispute with former councilor Barry Noll. A quilt sewn by the Boundary 4H sewing club fetched $1700 during the live auction at this year’s Cattle Baron’s Ball. The money raised will help pay for club fees, the transportation of livestock, clinics and miscellaneous expenses. A 25 year old Greenwood man called RCMP to report a machete attack. The man stated he was inside his residence when a person outside waved to him. The man recognized him as a person he had met several months ago. When he man went outside to greet the acquaintance, he reportedly attacked him, unprovoked, with the knife. There were no injuries, and the attacker’s identity and motive remained a mystery. Midway pharmacist Cris Bennett completed his first Boston Marathon in a time of three hours and 19 minutes. This was Bennett’s thirteenth marathon. Alice Glanville passed away at the age of 95. Glanville was a dedicated pioneer, lifetime eucator and treasury of historical wealth. May Former Times’ reporter Pat Kelly said goodbye to the Boundary at an emotional fairwell party hosted by the Midway Community Association. The community hall was packed with well-wishers bidding Kelly a warm bon voyage. Kelly was returning

to his Oregon roots to be with family. He had lived in the Boundary for 40 years, 25 of those in Midway. Songs for Water brought together representatives from several Boundary and Okanagan churches for a simple celebration of water at St. Mary’s church. In song and performance were local musical icons Peri Best and Vivien Browne, both members of the Singing Kettles choir. A sizeable group of Sidley Mountain and rural Bridesville residents appeared at an Advisory Planning Commission meeting to voice their concerns about the proposed new official community plan. A house at 15 Beaver Creek Road in Beaverdell was the site of an explosion and subsequent fire that destroyed the building. There was nothing suspicious about the blaze, and no one was injured. Margaret and Johnny Eek celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Married on VE Day in Rossland, the Eeks had lived in Rock Creek for much of their lives. The City of Greenwood fired CAO Robin Dalziel. No explanation for his dimissal was provided by the city. The Village of Midway increased taxes by six per cent. The budget also included the allocation of $26,000 for exterior improvements to the Midway Medical Clinic and purchases made by the resident doctor. BCSS Graduates held their formal year-end celebration at Tinhorn Creek Vineyard in Oliver.

First Nations artist David Seven Deers installed his Gateway sculpture project in Midway’s Entwined Tree Park. The installation consists of two vertical rock columns, a cross beam, a raven carving and numerous large stones arranged in a circle. Seven Deers hope is that schools frome the entire Boundary will use the park as an outdoor learning destination. The Gateway was given an official blessing a week later.

Greenwood council sat for it’s regular bi-monthly meeting in front of a standing-room only gallery. Residents gathered with the expectation that the dismissal of CAO Robin Dalziel would be clarified. Many left the meeting dissatisfied and two residents suggested further action on the part of citizens was forthcoming.

The Bored Room Bistro in Midway sold it’s 15,000th pizza to customer Frank Owen.

Greenwood Library celebrated its 70th anniversary.

Graham Watt of the Kettle River Watershed Management Plan reported that the river was flowing at 70 per cent of normal.

The Rock Creek Farmers Institute marked its 101st anniversary with a tour of area historical barns.

A group of Sidley Mountain and Bridesville residents travelled to Trail to present a petition against the development of an Official Community Plan put forth by Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Area E director Vicki Gee. The RDKB board acknowledged the presentation and accepted the petition for information.

McMynn’s Family Foods parking lot hosted a party in support of the Midway Public Library.

June

Petition to remove Greenwood Mayor Ed Smith and three of four councillors was signed by numerous city residents. The petition aims to expose what some residents see as four separate breaches of the commuity charter by council and was formally

registered on June 22. 18 students made up this year’s Boundary Central Secondary School’s graduating class. SD51 set its 2015-16 budget, projecting a deficit of around $300,000. Midway Mayor Randy Kappes presented long service awards to Fire Chief Walter Osellame and Deputy Chief Keith Martin. Former Greenwood resident Chuck Tasaka’s book My Hometown, My Furusato: Family History of Greenwood-Midway was awarded third place in the B.C Genealogical Society book awards for 2014. Midway RCMP arrested a driver suspected of drunk driving in Midway. A four-year-old girl was reportedly inside the vehicle. Later charged with impaired driving was Grand Forks councilor Michael Wirischagin. Greenwood resident Ciel Sander was appointed the trail coordinator for the recently formed Trails to the Boundary Society. Ciel’s responsibilities in-

clude assessment of the condition of the West Boundary portion of the Trans Canada Trail and prioritization of its maintenance. Residents of Westbridge and surrounding area were put on an evacuation alert in reposnse to a large lighning-caussed fire in the Zamora area. The alert was lifted as soon as the fire was contained. July Hailstorms resulted in flooding of the Greenwood Senior Centre. A New Horizons grant was used to cover the replacement of doors and carpeting. President Les Goddard praised city foreman Randy Smith for his swift response to the disaster with the placement of concrete barriers to prevent run off from reaching the building. Numerous large wildfires continued to burn throughout the province. Air quality in the Boundary region was poor, with a smoky skies advisory in effect. A province-wide heat wave led to the suspension of fishing in parts of B.C. and a total ban on open burning. Many re-

gions were designated with Level 3 and 4 drought ratings. A potentially large fire on Kerr Creek Rd. was averted through the speedy action of a passing RCMP officer and Midway and Greenwood firefighters. The owner of the property described the blaze as potentially disastrous for the area and praised the fire departments for their quick response.

Founders Day, Greenwood’s premier community event, was another great success, attracting hundreds of visitors to the July 11 celebration. Also in July were The Kettle River Memorial Run, the Kettle River Family Fun Day and several Canada Day parades. A 25-hectare fire north of Midway and east of Ingram Creek, was 100 per cent contained by 30 firefighters, two bulldozers and two water tenders.

Pierre Cloutier and his horse drawn wagons passed through West Boundary on his way to Williams Lake. Cloutier travelled 4,000 kilometres from his home in Quebec to his final destination • See YEAR IN REVIEW page 10

YEAR IN REVIEW in Vernon. Asked why he undertook such a challenging journey Cloutier said that he wanted to show people that you can always make your dream come true. Cloutier had dreamed of such a journey since he was boy. August Riverfest, Rock Creek’s annual celebration of the river, attracted a large crowd to celebrate everything about the Kettle River. The 2015 Federal election campaign kicked off. The campaign was scheduled to be the longest in recent history. The Boundary Bash Social 10’s Rugby Tournament was held in Greenwood. The tournament attracted players from across the province and was won by the Trail Colonials. A motorcylist was killed when his vehicle collided with a cow between Greenwood and Grand Forks. Grand Forks councillor Michael Wirishagin resigned from office a week before he was scheduled to appear in court on impaired driving charges. The Rock Creek wildfire began on August 13 at approximately 1:30pm. The fire, believed to have been human-caused, resulted in the destruction of 30 homes and numerous other structures. Around 600 Rock Creek and Westbridge residents were evacuated from their homes. An evacuation centre was set up at the Midway Community Hall, which remained open throughout the month.

Premier Christy Clark visited the Midway Reception Centre to show her support for the community. Clark spent about an hour at the centre chatting with evacuees and volunteers. Greenwood hosted the BC ATV Association’s annual Jamboree, which attracted hundreds of quad enthusiasts to the city. Participants were guided along numerous designated trails and, while impacted by the Rock Creek fire, the event proved a success for the association and local merchants alike. The 3rd annual Ponderosa Arts and Music Festival was cancelled due to the Rock Creek fire. The Needs Committee was struck to oversee the distribution of donated funds and resources for the residents directly affected by the Rock Creek fire. The committee continues to help those in need. Liberal candidate Connie Denesiuk responded swiftly to complaints about a campaign sign placed near the ignition point of the Rock Creek fire. Denesiuk drove to Rock Creek from her home in Summerland to apologize to residents. September The Midway Reception Centre, set up to service those impacted by the Rock Creek fire, officially closed on September 2. Tiller’s Folly performed for a packed audience during the Kettle River Museum’s summer wrap-up concert. Proceeds from the concert, which totalled $22,000 were earmarked for Rock

Creek fire relief. Rock Creek resident Vern Rexin alleged he was beaten by an RCMP member at his residence. There was no comment made by police regarding the incident. Greenwood’s Board of Trade welcomed MLA Linda Larson to its monthly meeting. On the agenda was the proposed formation of a committee to oversee restoration projects in the city, including the cleaning of the stained glass windows mounted in the old courtroom ceiling. The fire-affected portion of the Trans Canada Trail/KVR was reopened north of Rock Creek. Greenwood City Hall was refitted with two high efficiency gas furnaces, replacing the old gas boiler system.

The West Boundary Sustainable Foods and Resources Society (FAR) held its annual general meeting at the Midway Community Garden. President Leda Fair expressed her hope that membership of the society will continue to increase and help it reach its goal of cultivating a healthy and sustainable local food system. The Westbridge Thrift Store, spared from damage by the Rock Creek Fire, reopened. Local federal candidates participated in three West Boundary forums. Greenwood Elementary, BCSS and the Midway Community Hall welcomed candidates Richard Cannings (NDP), Connie Denesiuk (Liberal) and Samantha Troy (Green) to lively question and answer sessions.

The Rock Creek Boundary Fall Fair was once again a big success, though the revenue was down slightly from the previous year. A wet start to the weekend was a likely reason for the lower attendance, though the fair still attracted nearly 8,000 visitors.

Boundary Central Secondary School hosted the inaugaral Terry Fox Run.

The iconic Rock Creek Hotel was closed by bailiffs on September 23. The hotel was one of the oldest running licensed establishments in B.C.

NDP’s Richard Cannings claimed victory in South Okanagan West Kootenay.

Greenwood resident Christopher Yates, the principle architect of a petition aimed at removing most the city’s council from office, was targeted by a slanderous graffiti campaign. The motive for the attack was unclear and the culprits remained at large. Boundary C 4H Club earned the highest aggregate score in the beef division at the 4H Winter Fair in Barriere.

Ponderosa Arts and Music Festival organizers announced uncertainty around the 2016 version of the event.

West Boundary business Bored Room Bistro and The Yellow Door picked up major awards at the 2015 Business Excellence and Community Awards. Area E Regional Director Vicki Gee pledged her support for initiating FireSmart training for West Boundary residents. Bridesville fire expert and trainer Darren Hutchinson will be working with Gee to implement the training.

Habitat for Humanity announced the recipients of the new home construction in Westbridge that will replace a residence destroyed by the Rock Creek fire. The Winn family of five will have a new home built starting in 2016. Halloween bonfires, parties and trick-or-treating ended the month on a ghoulish note. November

The Greenwood Seniors Club held its annual general meeting and election. Re-elected was president Leslie Goddard and 1st vice-president Gladys Brown. Debbie Brownhill is the new 2nd vice-president.

The Benefit Fashion Show in Greenwood was a huge success, raising nearly $10,000 for victims of the Rock Creek Fair. Organizers Cindy Fairs and Heather Smith were thrilled by the turnout and with the funds raised.

Remembrance Day ceremonies in Kettle Valley and Greenwood attracted hundreds of spectators on a chilly morning. 93 year old Paul Lautard conducted the Kettle Valley service, which is only two years younger than he.

Vicki Gee reflected on her first year as Area E Regional Director, which was, in her words, “ordeal by fire in more ways than one.” Highlights included her work with special interest groups and their applications for funding, while the negative response to her proposed Official Community Plan for rural Bridesville figured among the disappointments that political office often brings.

West Boundary Elementary School students wrote impassioned letters of support for

YEAR IN REVIEW the opening of Mt. Baldy, described earlier in the news as imminent. With the rejection of Mt. Baldy Corporation’s offer to purchase the resort, the mountain appeared doomed to closure. John Hibberson’s Midway Little Theatre teamed up with Nelson’s Allegro Dance to present an eclectic musical play entitled River of Dreams at the Midway Community Hall. Most audience members enjoyed the production, while others found it too esoteric for their tastes and not as enjoyable as Hibberson’s previous production, Nana’s Naughty Knickers. The petition aimed at removing most of the Greenwood council was deemed by the B.C. Supreme Court to be not in proper form for submission. Petitioners vowed to reorganize their document and re-submit the petition in the appropriate format. Marijka van Kuik was named Boundary C 4H club overall member of the year at the club’s awards banquet at the Bridesville Community Hall. Paul and Gloria Lautard of Midway celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Christmas concerts at West Boundary and Greenwood/Midway elementary schools were both a fabulous success, as was the “Entrepreneur Market” following the show in Greenwood. Students raised $600, which was donated to the West Boundary Food Bank and the Greenwood Public Pool. Santa arrived in West Boundary, making stops at the Midway Childrens Christmas Party, Deadwood Junction in Greenwood, and the Heritage Credit Union. The Greenwood Legion donated hundreds of dollars to the Boundary Food Bank, the Greenwood Seniors Community Christmas Dinner and Parkview Manor. Christmas brought lots of snow to the region, making skiers on Phoenix Mountain happy. Unfortunately, it was announced that Mt. Baldy would not be opening for the season. 2015 was a challenging year for many in West Boundary. We are all hoping for a calmer and more peaceful 2016.

“Our heartfelt thanks to the Board of Directors and Executive Director Wendy McCulloch, for their demonstration of leadership in standing together when confronted with a disaster in our region,” said executive director Bob Huff. “We would also like to state our gratitude to the national association of Habitat for Humanity affiliates in Canada. HFH Southeast BC has received financial support from as far away as Ontario for the Winn family rebuild. Thanks also to the BC affiliates in Kelowna, and Upper Fraser Valley for their finan-

cial support.” The goal for the organization is to raise $100,000 and have the Winn family back living on their property by the fall of 2016. HFHSEBC will begin construction on the Winn family home this spring with the collaboration of key businesses and individuals in the Boundary region. “Rebuilding will be made easier with the generosity of our community,” said Huff. Anyone wishing to help out can contact Huff at 250-442-2722 or by email bob.huff@hfhsebc.
