RBC Foundation shines for EKRH maternity - $15,000 The Starlite Campaign is making one department at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital very happy this week thanks to the RBC Foundation and its Cranbrook Branch. An astounding gift of $15,000 from the financial institution and its foundation is being dedicated to purchase four blend oxygen analgesia systems for the EKFH Maternity Unit. The equipment is utilized for pain management during labour and will be a welcomed arrival to the unit. Christy Dobi, RBC Branch Manager for Cranbrook expresses, “At RBC we believe in the power of communities and the individuals who live in them. We also strongly believe that by supporting health care locally we all can have access to quality care right here at home.”

Health is a significant priority for RBC and they allocate about one-quarter of their annual donations budget to health and wellness organizations around the world that have a benefit to community, and have a direct impact on its employees and clients. In 2014, RBC committed more than $104 million in donations and sponsorships to

support community activities and organizations. EKFH has had the opportunity to work with many facets of RBC including its foundation and local branches in Cranbrook and Creston. The Starlite Campaign’s purpose is to support and strengthen health care initiatives in the East Kootenay. This purpose

could not be possible if were not from the financial donations received from organizations such as the RBC Foundation and donors like you. The campaign runs through to 31 January 2016 and donations can be made your local hospital or health care facility, through Canada Post or by making a secure donation at www.ekfh.ca.

Remembering 2015: another remarkable year July

August

September

Kimberley’s ambitious SunMine project officially opened in July. The 1.05 megawatt project was B.C.’s first gridconnected solar facility and was the largest project in Canada to use solar trackers. The site is set to expand and has already drawn interest from potential future investors.

Although many of the fires across the province started in July, like the above pictured Baynes Lake wildfire, Smoke from B.C. wildfires and the northern U.S. filled the skies as far away as Saskatchewan all the way through August. Camping was affected, with many campsites reporting very low visitor numbers and a campfire ban was in effect throughout most of the season. At its peak in August, there were 250 wildfires burning across the province.

A hacksaw, combined with teamwork and big hearts allowed concerned citizens to come together to save a fawn trapped in a wrought iron fence in a local resident’s backyard in Cranbrook.

October

November

December

After an exceedingly long (and sometimes acrimonious) run up to the election, NDP Wayne Stetski defeated incumbent Conservative Party David Wilks to become this area’s member of parliament. The results were a nail-biter, with Stetski defeating Wilks 23,529 votes to 23,244.

November saw the Charity Challenge Boxing event wow the crowds yet again. This year the challenge netted more than $33,000, all of which was earmarked for people who need a leg up right here in the community. Bout winners: Steve Mercandelli won his bout against Randy Rothwell, Stacey Kormilo defeated Lori Johansen, Patrick Sands won vs. Dan Green, Taylor Quinton was victorious against Curt Hargreaves, Sandi Duthie won against Ali Anderson, Dale Belcher defeated Josh Kapintanick and Eilas Martinez came out on top against Edyn Barber.

The Miracle on Baker Street, an initiative that saw some of Cranbrook’s most influential local leaders strip down to their skivvies for charity, raised nearly $56,000 for the Salvation Army’s 24/7 shelter—an amount nearly $40,000 more than what was originally hoped for.

Knights of Columbus #I406 dedicate $1,000 to Starlite

When charities support charities beautiful things can happen. Currently the Knights of Columbus (BC) Charity Foundation is conducting its 54th Annual Knights of Columbus (BC) Charity Appeal 2015/2016 and the local Knights of Columbus #1406 are actively involved in the fundraising effort. Each year the appeal features the opportunity to win a cash prize and three vehicle prizes. Locally the Knights sell their raffle tickets at the Tamarack

Shopping Center and feature a sample of the prize vehicles thanks to the generosity of local automotive dealers Northstar Motors, Denham Ford and Cranbrook Dodge who supply a vehicle for display. Monies raised from the raffle also allow the Knights to support local charities. One of the charities benefitting from their efforts is the East Kootenay Foundation for Health and its Starlite Campaign. The Knights of Columbus #1406 recent-

ly presented the foundation with a gift of $1,000 in support of EKFH raising funds for regional and community health programs. These programs are dedicated to helping those with arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, respiratory needs, and more or may require help with chronic disease management, home nursing, in-home oxygen, wound, senior, pediatric and selfcare programs. “We are really pleased to be able to help provide funding

to support health care in our community,” explains John Hudak, Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus #1406. Charity is the first principle of the Knights of Columbus. Knights are men who volunteer their time to service their parishes and their communities. And by working together with others, they were able to donate more than $1.4 billion and Photo submitted 664 million volunteer hours to worthy (From left) EKFH director John Young and Donna Grainger, Executive Direccauses in the past de- tor receive a Starlite gift from Knights of Columbus members Ken Bettin & cade. Western Financial raises money for “Support the Cause Walk” for Kimberley Special Care Each year, Western Financial Group employees from branches across Western Canada participate in the annual Support the Cause Walk which raises funds for Western Financial Group’s charitable arm, the Western Communities Foundation. All the funds raised in the Support the Cause Walk go towards the Western Communities Foundation’s three core programs which are infrastructure grants, matching grants and student bursaries. For the Kimberley branch of Western

Financial the matching grant program was a perfect fit for their team to get behind a cause that is dear to them the Kimberley Special Care Home. Seven team members completed the walk donating a gift of $432 for patient comforts for the residential care facility. Taking part in the fundraising event was Shannon McKinstry, Corinne Caldwell, Yuko Shimokata, Bernece Foreman, Tami Prasad and Dana Reimer. The gift is being directed to EKFH’s Starlite Campaign which launched November

Kootenay community ski areas secure futures Two community ski areas near Fairmont Hot Springs and Elkford now have more secure futures, thanks to renewed operating agreements with the Province. The operating agreements for Fairmont Hot Springs Ski Area and Wapiti Ski Area last for 30 years each, and help support the long-term viability of these areas for the continued benefit of winter recreation and tourism in B.C.’s Kootenay communities. Small ski areas are excellent venues for community sport, education and events throughout the province every year, and host thousands of children and families annually through school and club programs in

which local residents learn and participate in downhill and crosscountry skiing, and snowboarding. Also, all levels of amateur winter sport competitions are held at community ski areas, where athletes and coaches acquire skills and train for events like the BC Winter Games and Canada Winter Games. In 2008, the BC Winter Games were hosted by the nearby East Kootenay communities of Kimberley and Cranbrook. The ministry’s Mountain Resorts Branch facilitated master plan updates and review processes for the two ski areas, and the new operating agreements were reached in spring 2015.

27. Donations from individuals, businesses and corporations are making the stars shine in support of community health care pro-

grams. If you would like to light a path for others, please consider making a donation today visit www.ekfh.ca to learn more.

Hugs: To all first responders and good Samaritans at the scene of the accident my parents were in Friday night. You were all wonderful and part of the reason why we moved here in the first place. Thank you and stay safe on the roads this winter! Hugs: I want to give big hugs to the snow angel who plows the sidewalks on Staple Cres. It is so appreciated. Hugs: To Cranbrook Wal Mart for matching all the Salvation Army kettle donations on Saturday December 19, dollar for dollar. Hugs: To the supportive

members of the community who helped me, a single mother of 5, this Christmas season. Blessings to you all. All the best of health in the New Year.

Slugs: To whoever took the $100 out of my daughter’s wallet at the Baker Pub, that was all her Christmas money. Hope you enjoy it. Merry Christmas!

Hugs: Endless hugs to the staff and owners of High Point Plumbing and Heating. Kevin, Cara Dawn, Nick and Chad, generously saved our Christmas fixing our furnace and gifting parts and repair. I cannot offer enough praise and thanks to repay the thoughtful generosity of this very special group of people. This is more than a business they are the true example of Christmas spirit and community. A loving hug to all of you, keep making Cranbrook good.

Slugs: In reference to the recent slug concerning David Wilks’ election signs still not taken down, they also left their signs up on the building that served as campaign headquarters in Cranbrook.

Hugs: A big hug to all the patients of the Tamarack Medical Clinic that brought treats, cards, and gifts of appreciation. We are very thankful for such great patients. All the best in the new year. Love the staff and doctors of the Tamarack Medical Clinic

Slugs: To (the alleged city of) Cranbrook for complaining about a so-called misrepresentation of its community by the tour guide Lonely Planet when, at the same time, it practically treats its own pedestrians as second-class citizens. We DO pay taxes too, you know! Hugs: To the workers at the Kimberley Landfill for the lovely Christmas atmosphere upon entry and for helping a senior get recycles into the yellow bins that have very heavy lids that some people just can’t lift.

Hunting film tour to play Key City Theatre

The Back Country Hunters and Anglers (B.C. Chapter) are pleased to announce that the 2nd Annual North American Hunting Film tour will play the Key City Theatre in Cranbrook on Saturday Feb 27th. The special film night is a fund-raiser for

the non-profit group which was formed in February of 2014. The mandate of the B.C. Chapter is to utilize the moral structure and strong conservation message of the parent organization, to actively represent conservation and wild land issues. The B.C.

Chapter is 100% self funding and is directly responsible to it’s B.C. membership. The Hunting Film Festival will get underway at 7 p.m. but the fun evening will start at 5:30 p.m., with a social in the lobby of the theatre, where there will be door prizes, and

raffle items for hunters to take advantage of. All seats for the event are reserved and priced at $20 including all taxes and service charges. Tickets are on sale now at the Key City Theatre box office or available by phone at 250-426-7006, or online at www.keycity-

theatre.com. You can also pick tickets up at Mountain Man Outdoors on Baker Street in Cranbrook. Last year’s film tour was held in May and was a huge success despite the great weather. Organizers though decided to move the event to the winter months

this year to give even more people a chance to attend this popular event. The Backcountry Hunters and Anglers have also indicated that the hunting film festival on Feb 27th at the Key City Theatre in Cranbrook, is for all ages of hunters, and will be

for the entire family to enjoy, regardless of whether you are a member of the organization or not. For more information on the event and the BHA , go to www. backcountryhunters. org. For more information on the films go to www.huntingfilmtour. com

The Elk Valley Community Directed Funds (EVCDF) Committee has allocated $430,000 to the Elk Valley Community Trail project. Efforts are now underway to secure matching funds through Trans Canada Trail, which if approved, would bring the total value of the project to almost

$900,000. “From the very beginning our Committee was hopeful that we could use the Community Directed Funds to support a single project that would have a lasting and notable impact on the Elk Valley. With the ability to receive matching funding from the Trans Canada Trail to develop this route through the Elk

valley, we believe that we have found such a project,” says EVCDF Committee Chair Mary Giuliano. “A quality trail system is an important component of community economic development and complements the social well-being and healthy lifestyles of Elk Valley residents. As a Committee, we are pleased

to be making this strategic investment in our Valley’s recreational infrastructure,” adds Giuliano. The RDEK, Fernie Trails Alliance, and Columbia Basin Trust will be working with the Trans Cana-

da Trail to develop a funding agreement for the Elk Valley Community Trail project, which is proposed to connect the communities of Elko, Morrissey, Fernie, Hosmer, Sparwood and Elkford with a mostly

non-motorized single-track trail. The trail will cover a distance of 150km and help connect some of the remaining gaps in the Trans Canada Trail (TCT) through the East Kootenay. The EVCDF Pro-

gram ran for three years between 2013 and 2015. The RDEK gratefully acknowledges the financial support of Columbia Basin Trust which supports efforts and ideas of the people of the Columbia Basin.

B.C.’s new curriculum, which is being phased in over the next three years, is designed to help improve student achievement, success and graduation. The curriculum provides a

flexible and innovative plan to help B.C. students gain the knowledge and skills they need for the jobs of tomorrow.

“Our continued success in the number of students graduating is a testament to the strength of our education system. It’s also encouraging to see so many Aboriginal students graduating and the teamwork involved to support them.” Mike Bernier, Minister of Education

Quick Facts: * The six-year completion rate is the percentage of students who graduate with a B.C. certificate of graduation or B.C. adult graduation diploma within six years from the first time they enroll in Grade 8, adjusted for migration in and out of B.C. * For the last five years, B.C. has consistently ranked third for the number of students who graduate in Canada, according to Statistics Canada.
