TERRACE - Branch 13 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Terrace made two donations leading up to Christmas. KITIMAT - Attendance of 16 people at an information workshop regarding taking in Syrian refugees is a good sign there is local interest in the subject. Even more, there are some Kitimat applications already in the works to bring in refugees, which will join applications being made for families to move to Terrace and Smithers. The information workshop was hosted by Liz Hoffman of the Kitimat Immigration Resource Centre. Hoffman gave those in attendance information and assurances on how the immigration process works in Canada. Hoffman says on the securi-
ty aspect, it’s actually a rigorous process of screening and being a refugee in Canada is a harder process than just coming here as a visitor. Because of those security checks it’s not an ideal process for would-be terrorists. She also countered the concern that it costs the government money to support refugee families. While she said the federal government has a settlement assistance fund, that is special funding that has always been available and is not a new program in response to the Syrian issue. Provincially refugees don’t typically receive social services as well, at least for their first year in the country, which is the term
of sponsorship for them by Canadians. Its the sponsors who also have to provide the costs for the family, including housing. Hoffman said the most common route to sponsor a refugee is to do the Group of Five process, where at least five people commit to financial and emotion support of the family for the first year, at an expected year-long cost of $25,000. The refugees also are on the hook for the transportation cost in to Canada, and if they can’t pay outright for it a loan, with interest, is offered by the Canadian government. The Kitimat Immigration Resource Centre is in the Northwest Community College building and she said information litera-
ture and forms are available for interested persons. She said there are two Kitimat applications submitted to sponsor a refugee family, and two more are being seriously considered. Similar applications are being readied to accept families in Terrace and Smithers. The provincial government earlier this year committed to supporting the federal government’s ambitions to bring in 25,000 refugees by the end of February. “We are going to fund their children when they go to school, of course, and support them in finding the counselling services, the housing and general settlement services that they need,” said Premier Christy Clark.

Steps to tackle seasonal depression By Shannon Lough THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - With little more than seven hours of daylight in Prince Rupert at this time of year holiday cheer may be tough to come by, but there is hope. Being aware of your mood and how others around you are reacting to the darkness and the pressures of the season may be the first step. Clinical educator at Northern Health, Damen DeLeenheer, offers some resources to those suffering from seasonal depression. “The demands that many place on themselves to attend to and meet the expectations of others may contribute to anxiety and stress. On top of all of this the shorter days and longer nights can lead to seasonal affective disorder (SAD) making the holiday season even more difficult to enjoy,” DeLeenheer says. The shortest day has passed but the darkness still seeps in leaving some people feeling SAD. The signs and symptoms for SAD may include low energy, increased appetite, weight gain, trouble concentrating and sleeplessness. At the Prince Rupert Health Unit’s Mental Health and Addiction Community Program there is additional support for people suffering from SAD. Kelsey Basso is the program support for public health
A division of
nursing as well as mental health and addictions. She says there are seven SAD lamps at the clinic that counsellors lend to their clients. “It’s basically a sunshine lamp that’s supposed to mimic the effect of the sun during winter months when people have SAD. If they spend a certain amount of time under this lamp it’s supposed to help their illness as well as counselling. Each of our counsellors has one that they lend out.” Light therapy lamps can also be purchased online with prices ranging from $50 to $250.
Clinical trials have tested light treatment for effectiveness. The American Journal of Psychiatry published the results of a trial in 2006 that compared light treatment with antidepressant medication and found that patients who used light therapy responded earlier to the treatment but other than that both treatments had the same effect on the patient. DeLeenheer says that using the sun lamp is one way to help people struggling with SAD. “In regards to seasonal blues, again it’s more than just the light. That’s one part of it.
Social isolation can be another part.” The Mental Health and Addiction Community Program doesn’t see higher numbers around the holidays, according to Basso. “People who are depressed stay in their homes and it’s not really something we see a big uptake in.” But due to New Year’s resolutions she says the clinic will see a spike in patients with an alcohol addiction. Although some North Coast residents may feel the obvious effects of SAD, “For holiday blues it’s such a multi-faceted issue that affects can come from so many areas of your life,” DeLeenheer says. Feeling blue may be attributed to overindulgence in sweets or alcohol, financial stress, or even the pressure to recreate popular culture’s version of an ideal holiday. What should you do? If you think you’re experiencing seasonal blues DeLeenheer recommends that you ask yourself these questions: over the past few weeks have you experienced little interest in doing things? Have you been feeling down, depressed or hopeless? If your answer is yes for more than half of the days consider getting additional support. Speak with your nurse practitioner or family doctor or call the Northern Health community mental health and addictions programs and ask to speak with one of the nurses or clinicians.

Kitimat RCMP vehicle slides off road, hits power pole
An RCMP traffic reconstructionist was called in and the collision does remain under investigation. Police say that they have responded to 13 collisions so far in December, five occurring on the highway and the rest within the municipality. The RCMP are using this latest incident to remind all motorists to be careful with winter road conditions. That includes clearing the vehicle of snow, making sure the windows are defrosted and drive relative to conditions. Also be cautious entering and exiting side streets due to the rising snow pack.

Skaters hone skills in Kitimat
KITIMAT- Snow Valley Skating Club was pleased to host the 2016 Kla How Ya competition from November 27 to 29 in the Tamitik Arena. Skaters from Snow Valley Skating Club participated along with skaters from Terrace, Smithers, Prince Rupert, Hazelton and Houston Skating Clubs. Snow Valley Skating Club Skaters achieved great results in all of their events with approximate 50 medals and numerous ribbons. Coaches Cynthia Medeiros and Mikaela Carreiro were most proud of the many personal best scores that skaters achieved. They were also proud of the sportsmanship and professionalism Kitimat skaters they portrayed during the competition. The skaters used the Kla How Ya competition as a warm up for the upcoming CNC Regional Championships that will be held in Prince George in January. The club thanksall of the skaters who participated, coaches, parents and family members for their support and the District of Kitimat and many local businesses who provided financial support allowing us to host this competition in Kitimat.
PRINCE RUPERT - They’ve still got it. The team of 1980-2005 alumni Charles Hays/ Prince Rupert Secondary Rainmakers defeated the current iteration of the Charles Hays (CHSS) Senior Boys’ White Team Rainmakers 101-86 this past Saturday in the Jim Ciccone Rainmaker Alumni Tournament. The tournament, celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Rainmakers basketball program in Prince Rupert, saw the senior boys’ team from the high school split into two squads as well as a team from the junior boys’ squad compete against three alumni teams, varying in playing dates ranges from back in 1946. The teams played nine games between Friday and Saturday and in the final, current senior boys’ assistant coach Ryan Bishop and brother Brody Bishop were on fire against the team in white. While Ryan notched 14 points, all in the third quarter, Brody was on fire, putting up 40 points throughout the game to lead the 1980-2005 Rainmakers over the current high-schoolers. Justin McChesney matched Brody, scoring 34 points himself for the current Rainmakers and Skyler Wesley scored 10 to lead the team in the loss. “[The tournament is going] good. We all know each other and respect each other. I think I have improved alot under the program and [head coach] Mel [Bishop] and I’m very grateful for that opportunity,” said senior boys’ Grade 11 member Ben Rabel during the tourney. Rainmaker coach Mel Bishop was honoured for his years behind the bench.

This is our smelter
Our people are the heart of our modernization A new era in aluminium production is beginning in Kitimat. Smelter modernization will reposition BC Operations as one of the most sustainable and competitive primary metal aluminium producers in the world. The technology will revolutionize the way we work, dramatically reducing total emissions by nearly 50 per cent. Good news for all of us - our employees, their families and our community. But it’s not just about technical edge - our employees are the real competitive advantage.
This is Margaret’s story Veteran employee Margaret Da Silva has seen many changes over her career with BC Operations. When she first joined Rio Tinto, Margaret started with our Wharf Operations, and after a short stint working at the Kemano Power House she returned to Kitimat to work in the potrooms. Seventeen years after first joining the company, Margaret has come full circle and is back where she started, at the Wharf. Margaret has noted many changes over the years at BC Operations but, “None more so than the ever increasing number of women now working here. From entry level positions, all the way up to the ranks of senior management, women now equally share in the job opportunities at BC Operations,” she observes. As for Margaret, she is enjoying her new position and takes pride in the fact that she is the first female locomotive engineer in the history of BC Operations. Although many innovations will debut with Kitimat’s smelter start-up, it’s employee know-how and how we work together through decades of aluminium production experience that have positioned BC Operations for success.
