First baby of 2016 gets warm reception at KBRH Layla Mackenzie McTeer born at 8:25 a.m. on Jan. 2 VALERIE ROSSI Trail Times

Valerie Rossi photo

Melanie Spray and Joey McTeer welcomed their New Year’s baby Layla Mackenzie McTeer into the world Saturday at 8:25 a.m. The Warfield couple was thankful when the Tuesday Morning Quilters dropped by Monday with some hand-made quilts for both mom and baby.

The new year started with a healthy cry from Layla Mackenzie McTeer, the first baby born at the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital this year. The maternity ward was abuzz with expectant moms when Layla arrived six pounds and 15 ounces at 8:25 a.m. Saturday. “It’s definitely one way to start the year,” said new dad, Joey McTeer, 31, smiling at his partner and new mom, 26-yearold Melanie Spray. “They said we got the ball rolling, and everyone else just started having babies,” she added of the two other bundles delivered that day. Steady contractions led the

couple to the Trail hospital at around 2 a.m. “It was pretty overwhelming,” said Joey. “The worst part about it was seeing her in so much agony.” But mom pushed through, and baby arrived eight hours later. Layla joins the ranks of about five per cent of babies actually born on their due date. She arrived with ease with Dr. Sarah Tucker delivering the newborn with help from nurses Shanna Tanabe and Marion Mazzocchi. “They were amazing and took great care of us,” said Melanie, who admitted she wanted to find out what she was having before birth but baby wasn’t cooperating during an ultrasound, and it was decided to keep the sex a surprise. The realness has started to settle in with sleepless nights at the hospital forgotten with baby cuddles during the day. Precious moments are spent

gazing at their baby girl and trying to decide who she looks like. But one thing is for certain,“if she’s anything like her mom, she’ll be all kinds of trouble,” laughed Joey. Just as the parents thought they were full to the brim with joy, they were gifted with warm hand-made quilts. In annual tradition, the Tuesday Morning Quilters’ Rose Wenzel and Barb Johnson dropped off batik-style creations made especially for mom and her New Year’s baby. The couple, originally from Rossland, live in Warfield now. Melanie works as a pharmacy technician in Fruitvale and Joey at Interfor in Castlegar. Proud grandparents Pat and Ethel McTeer of Rossland and grandma Michelle Spray of Vernon live close enough to support the couple as they settle back into their home with a new baby.

2016 POLAR BEAR SWIM

Smaller crowd braves New Year’s dip SHERI REGNIER Trail Times

This year it actually felt warmer in the water than standing on the beach. That’s what the majority of swimmers proclaimed following the Polar Bear Swim on New Years Day in Trail. The Columbia River was a balmy 4 C at noon on Friday in Gyro Park, compared to the -8 C temperature that felt much colder taking into account the wind chill. But there was no complaining from the 61 swimmers who rang in the new year with a dip once the rescue boat was near shore and Lt. Bart Fyffe gave the signal. Though the number of participants was roughly half the usual, (last year there were 129) the beach was lined with hundreds of onlookers, who cheered and snapped photos

before gathering around the beach bonfire, courtesy of the 44 Engineer Squadron. First on the beach this year, arriving at 10:30 a.m. in shorts, T-shirt, and a Santa hat, was Jim Harrold. After 25 years of taking a dip Jan. 1, whether it was in Vancouver, Mission or Trail, Harrold well knows that acclimatizing to the conditions before taking the plunge somewhat softens the blow and prevents “brain freeze” when diving in head first. This year, Harrold had an added challenge, which was a hair-free scalp. On Dec. 19 at the Trail Legion, he shaved his head to raise awareness for cancer. Besides keeping the tradition of a Polar Bear Swim and being one of the first in the river this year, Friday also marked Harrold’s first day sitting as president of the Trail Legion since he left the position one year ago.

Regional district chair talks about what’s coming up in the new year SHERI REGNIER Trail Times

Nothing is rubber stamped and all 13 directors are tuned into regional district business, says Grace McGregor. “We’ve been working hard on becoming a unified board and I believe we have that,” said McGregor, director for Area C/Christina Lake. “People are reading their agendas, paying attention and asking questions,” she added. “I think those conversations are what make the board even better.” Now entering her third year as chair of the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) board, McGregor is eager to start things up in the new year, beginning with a streamlined timetable. “What we’ve been working on is stacking meetings, piggy-backing if you will, and simplifying it a bit,” she explained. “So people aren’t on the road all the time.” There are currently 19 committees, not including select committees, and winter travel can be especially cumbersome between Grand Forks and Trail. Beginning January, Committee of the Whole days are planned, meaning two or three committee meetings scheduled over the course of one day instead of three separate days. “We are giving that a try and hoping it will work,” said McGregor. “Because it will free up time for elected officials to spend more time in their respective communities, and take on other portfolios they’ve wanted to do, but haven’t had the

Grace McGregor recently began her third year as RDKB board chair. time to do.” Another trial starting in the new year could keep agenda matters moving along during the winter months despite the weather. Broadband Internet service was upgraded in the Grand Forks location this month, allowing for telecommunication in future situations when driving condi-

tions are poor. “I would like to make this clear that we are not looking at video conferencing to take over board meetings or face-to-face meetings,” McGregor clarified. “We are looking at video conferencing for committees when weather is bad or things prevent us from getting together,” she said. “Or, if someone wants to do a board presentation, it’s not always convenient for people to come to our little world… we can still do the work without putting it on the back burner, and sometimes that information is what provides good understanding and good decision making.” Another undertaking launching in the new year, is an overall review of the organization that is meant to help improve both governance and administration. “I think, quite frankly, our people at regional district are very, very busy,” she said. “We may find out, they are too busy.” The goal is to identify which operations are working efficiently as well as areas that require improvement. “I think people get lost in the ideas of cutbacks and they forget communication and good service is also the primary goal,” McGregor continued. “If you can cutback and not lose service then fine - if you can’t, then you need to find a different way,” she added. “If you really care about people getting the right information, sometimes it just costs more, period. “So this is something I am going to find very interesting and I think, people are going to be a little surprised.”

More time to comment on road closures SHERI REGNIER Trail Times

Website snags and public outcry has the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources extending the time period for feedback regarding proposed road changes in the Pend D’Oreille valley. Opportunity for public comment on the province’s Access Management Area (AMA) proposal is open until Jan. 22, confirmed Sharon Dean, the ministry’s communications manager. “There were technical problems with the website which have been resolved,” she said. “The ministry wanted to make sure the public had a full 30-

day comment period,” Dean noted, referring to the original Dec. 31 public closing date. “Anyone in B.C. can comment on the proposed changes.” The news is welcome for Ali Grieve, director for Area A. She attended the ministry’s Dec. 16 public meeting in Trail, and requested another face-to-face be slated in the Fruitvale area to ensure people could attend post-holiday season. At the time, Grieve also shared frustration that links on the government website didn’t point her to a promised online forum where she could share her views. Besides extending the dead-

line three weeks, the ministry confirmed a workshop meeting is scheduled for Jan. 19 in the Fruitvale Memorial Hall. “We are very pleased they heard what the public had to say on the process and lack of public consultation,” says Grieve. “I would encourage the public to attend in order to share their views on the proposed road closures.” From the ministry’s perspective, a recent increase in off-road vehicle use and illegal trail building has damaged Pend D’Oreille lands, compromising wildlife habitat areas and promoting the spread of invasive plants throughout the valley. The AMA, looks to

maintain access and hunting opportunities on some main roads but restrict motorized access on secondary roads to reduce the impact on wildlife populations, habitat, and sensitive ecosystems. Every two years, the Fish and Wildlife branch publishes a new Hunting and Trapping Regulations Synopsis. Prior to this publication, the associated regulations are reviewed and changes proposed. The public can provide feedback on the proposal via email at fishandwildlife. kootenay@gov. bc.ca or by searching the New Angling, Hunting and Trapping Engagement link on gov.bc.ca.

LOCAL Seniors urged to learn if they qualify for MSP subsidy C ANADIAN PRESS VANCOUVER Prices for several services have jumped in British Columbia as of New Year’s Day, prompting the province’s seniors advocate to urge people over 65 to find out if they qualify for Medical Services Plan premium subsidies. Isobel Mackenzie says seniors could be eligible for full or partial payments but most are unaware of the available help. She noted in her 2015 report that only 39 per cent of seniors knew about the program, and awareness was lowest among those with annual incomes under $30,000. Mackenzie says some retirees are paying $900 every year for MSP and could benefit from assistance. The premium assistance program offers five levels of subsidies on a sliding scale for individuals and families earning less than $30,000, while those making under $22,000 would pay no premium at all. On Jan. 1, premiums for people with a net income over $30,000 climbed by about four per cent, with ferry fares and property taxes also scheduled to climb this year.

2015 warmest on record in 50 years

THE NELSON STAR Last year was the warmest on record of the last 50 years, according to forecasters at the Southeast Fire Centre’s weather office in Castlegar. The average annual temperature during 2015 was 10.2 degrees, barely edging out the 10.15 C average temperature of 1998. Records for the Castlegar airport date back to 1966. The total amount of precipitation for the year was 701.4 millimeters, which is 93 per cent of the normal 755.5 mm. The driest year on record is 1985 with only 479.5 mm. As for last month, the total precipitation of 135.6 mm was 150 per cent of normal, while

the average temperature was 1.4 C milder than normal. “As is typical of December it was an eventful month as numerous Pacific systems pushed across southern B.C.,” wrote forecasters Ron Lakeman and Jesse Ellis in their monthly roundup of statistics. The first half of the month was relatively mild and especially wet, with 112.6 mm of rain and wet snow recorded in the first 12 days. However, even with the almost 35 cm of snow that fell during that period, there was only a trace of snow on the ground by mid-month. A record daily high temperature of 10.5 C was set on Dec. 9. The coldest temperature was

minus-8.9 degrees on Dec. 17. In the second half of the month, temperatures were cooler and snow was still frequent but much lighter. The greatest daily amount was 11.6 cm on the Dec. 20. The local snowpack was measured at 15 cm on New Year’s Eve. The record for the most precipitation in December is 195.1 mm, set in 1996, of which 169.5 mm fell as snow. The driest year on record was 19.9 mm in 1985. The warmest temperature ever recorded in December was 11.6 C on Dec. 27, 1980 and the coldest temperature was minus-30.6 C on Dec. 30, 1968.

first met Stephen Harper when he was running for the Canadian Alliance leadership in 2002. Speaking to a group of Fraser Valley members concerned that the party had split over the leadership of Stockwell Day, Harper didn’t mince words because a local reporter had showed up on a Saturday morning. He explained his prediction that no matter who leads the conservative movement started by Preston Manning, the national media would work against it. “The press is owned by big-L liberals and staffed by small-L liberals,” Harper said. “Preston was too cerebral; Stock was not cerebral enough. I’m not sure where I will be, but the media will always be on the other side.” Harper’s cold war with national media is a theme that runs through his decade as prime minister, peaking in 2015 with the most slanted election coverage I’ve ever witnessed. The celebration continues over Justin Trudeau’s victory, with the supposedly non-partisan federal bureaucracy cheering along with much of the national media.

Trudeau’s star turn in Paris, where he pronounced that “Canada is back” in the battle to control the world’s weather? The official submission from his bloated delegation to the UN climate meetings was actually the existing Conservative plan, which includes phasing out coal-fired electricity generation. Harper generally represented a preference for the individual over the state, a concept that at one time was known as “liberalism.” This was illustrated by his preference for parents rather than a nanny state to administer child care. He advocated free trade, small government and low taxes. We’ll see how that legacy survives the new government and its media cheering section. ‘Star Wars’ box office surpasses ‘Titanic,’ ‘Jurassic World,’ edges in on ‘Avatar’ record

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” marched confidently into the new year, raking in an additional $88.3 million over the New Year’s weekend and topping the box office for a third week, according to studio estimates Sunday. In addition to setting a new high mark in New Year’s box office history, the record-busting film blew past the domestic grosses of both “Jurassic World” ($652.3 million) and “Titanic” ($658.7 million) to become the second-highest earner of all time with $740.3 million in just 19 days of release. The top domestic film is “Avatar” with a $760.5 million lifetime domestic gross, but “Star Wars” is barrelling in to surpass it soon. For context, it took “Avatar” 72 days to reach $700 million. “Star Wars” did that in 16 days. While “Star Wars” might not give up its throne any time soon, films like “Daddy’s Home” and “Sisters” have proven to be incredibly strong performers. “Daddy’s Home,” the comedy starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, came in second with an estimated $29 million, bringing its total to $93.7 million in just two weeks. The film fell only 25 per cent from its first weekend in theatres. Even more formidable is the mere 11 per cent drop from the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler comedy “Sisters,” which brought in $12.6 million in its third weekend for a fourth-place spot. The film has earned $61.7 so far. “When you look at the holding power of ‘Daddy’s Home’ and ‘Sisters,’ it shows you that those films are for many people the antidote to ‘Star Wars,”’ said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst for box office tracker Rentrak. “The diversity of the slate that the studios created by not retreating from ‘Star Wars’ is helping.” Quentin Tarantino’s bloody Western “The Hateful Eight,” meanwhile, took third with $16.2 million in its first weekend in wide release after a strong limited debut. The three-hour epic, which cost a reported $44 million to produce, has made $29.6 million to date - just shy of what “Django Unchained” made in its first weekend.

LETTERS & OPINION

The Islamic wars of religion escalate to another level

O

n Friday, Saudi Arabia’s Sunni Muslim rulers beheaded their country’s leading Shia Muslim cleric, Sheikh Nimr Baqr al-Nimr, on charges of seeking “foreign meddling” in the kingdom.

GWYNNE

DYER World Affairs

On Saturday, an angry crowd of Iranians – all Shia Muslims, of course – attacked the Saudi Arabian embassy in Tehran. And Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, put a cartoon on his website comparing Saudi Arabia’s headchopping orgy on New Year’s Day (46 other executions on the same day) to the mass executions carried out by the Sunni extremist ‘Islamic State’ group. So on Sunday, Saudi Arabia broke diplomatic relations with Iran – and all the pundits started talking about the Sunni-Shia “war of religion” that is about to engulf the Middle East. This raises two questions. First, what would a Sunni-Shia war of religion actually look like? And second, has everybody in the Middle East taken leave of their senses? The first question is best answered by looking at the history of the Christian wars of religion, ca. 1520-1660. The Muslim world now, like “Christendom” in the 16th century, is made up of many independent countries. And the current phase of the Muslim wars of religion is being fought out between Shias and Sunnis in Iraq, Syria and Yemen, just as the first phase of the Christian wars of religion was fought out

mainly between Catholics and Protestants in individual countries. From the start of the conflict in Europe, however, each European state tried to help its co-believers in neighbouring countries as well, and alliances were increasingly shaped by religious considerations. In the second phase, these alliances dragged most of Europe into the catastrophic Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648), fought mostly in the middle of Europe but involving armies from as far apart as Sweden and Spain. The main battleground, Germany, lost between onethird and one-half of its population. Nobody won, of course, and in the very long run everybody just lost interest in the question. But it was a very great waste of lives, time and money. The Muslim world is already caught up in the first phase of a comparable process, but it is not condemned to go the whole distance. One big difference is that the Sunni-Shia split is ancient – more than 1,350 years old – whereas the CatholicProtestant split was new and still full of passion at the time of the Christian wars. More than 99 percent of today’s Muslims were simply born Sunni or Shia, whereas many 16th-century Christians had made a conscious choice about their religion. The current killings in the Muslim world are mostly driven by state policy, so maybe Muslims will not throw away a couple of generations following the same foolish, bloody road that the Christians took 500 years ago. Those who live at the geographical extremes of the Muslim world – Indonesia, Malaysia, and Bangladesh in the East; Morocco, Algeria, Tunisa and even Egypt in the West – will certainly not suffer the same fate, for there are only tiny Shia minorities in these countries. But for those who live in the heart of the Muslim world, from Yemen to Turkey and from Lebanon to Iran, the fu-

ture may be much darker. And so to the second question: has everybody in the Middle East taken leave of their senses? Not exactly, but many players have lost sight of the bigger picture. George W. Bush’s invasion of Iraq in 2003 unleashed the sectarian demon in the region. The “Arab Spring” of 2011 frightened the region’s dictatorships and absolute monarchies into increased repression and greater reliance on appeals to sectarian loyalty. Then King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia died a year ago, and the kingdom spun out completely. Saudi Arabia under its previous monarchs was very cautious and conservative in its foreign policy. It subsidised various extreme Sunni groups in other countries, but it clung tightly to its American alliance and never engaged directly in adventures abroad The new Saudi king, Salman, is 80 years old and infirm, so in practice most decisions are made by his nephew, Crown Prince Muhammad bin Nayef (aged 56), or his son, Deputy Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman (aged only 30). There is intense competition between the two men for the succession to the throne, and the decisions coming out of Riyadh have been much bolder than ever before. The past nine months have seen a major Saudi Arabian military intervention against the Shia side in the Yemeni civil war, the creation of a Saudi-led alliance of almost all the Sunnimajority Arab states, and now the execution of a Shia leader in Saudi Arabia that was clearly calculated to cause a diplomatic breach with Iran. It’s just dynastic politics, in other words, not some inevitable geopolitical juggernaut. But it was similar dynastic politics half a millennium ago that triggered the worst phase of the Christian wars of religion. Smoke Eaters start strong in New Year, shut out Surrey JIM BAILEY

After dropping the final game of 2015 on Wednesday, 4-1, to the West Kelowna Warriors, the Trail Smoke Eaters kicked off the New Year on a winning note with a 4-0 shutout of the struggling Surrey Eagles on Saturday. Smokies’ leading scorer Nick Halloran scored twice, goaltender Linden Marshall recorded his first BCHL shutout, and captain Evan MacEachern netted what proved to be the winning goal 3:11 into the first period to give Trail its 18th victory of the season, one shy of last year’s total. “We still feel for two months here, that we still have to become a better hockey team,” said Smoke Eaters head coach and GM Nick Deschenes. “Playing teams like Kelowna has proven that we’re not consistently getting the results we need in those kinds of games against those opponents. But if I look across the ice, I do like the Randy Emery photo progress a lot of our players have Trail Smoke Eater goalie Linden Marshall earned his first shutout in the BCHL, backstopping the Smokies to a 4-0 made versus other teams. Hawks drop three on rough road

JIM BAILEY Times Sports Editor

After going undefeated in nine straight games, the Beaver Valley Nitehawks hit a bump in the road losing their third game in a row on the road on Sunday. Following a gruelling stretch of fivegames-in-six days, the Nitehawks fell to

their bitter division rivals Castlegar Rebels 7-4 on Sunday. The defeat comes hard on the heels of a 4-2 loss to the league-leading Kimberley Dynamiters Saturday and a 7-4 New Years Eve setback to the Nelson Leafs on Thursday that broke B.V.’s unbeaten stretch dating back to November. The Hawks beat the Leafs 6-5 the

night before and played to a 1-1 draw with the Rebels last Tuesday. “It was a busy stretch of games,” said Nitehawks coach and GM Terry Jones. “It might have been a little too much for our guys … and throwing the Kimberley game in there was tough. But I don’t want to make a lot of excuses, I just don’t think we played

very well the last three games.” Despite the setbacks, the 25-8-2-2 Hawks maintain top spot in the Neil Murdoch division, with the Rebels moving to within eight points of B.V. with three games in hand, after trailing by 12 points last week. The Rebels Chris Brese scored the winning goal with seven

need is proving to be the right formula.” The win comes on the heels of a 4-1 loss to division rivals West Kelowna Warriors on Wednesday at the Cominco Arena. Trail has an 0-3 record against their division rival this year, and the Warriors sit 12 points up on the Smoke Eaters in the Interior division standings. “I thought we played well enough to give ourselves a chance, but couldn’t score,” said Deschenes. “Their goalie has been playing pretty well … It seems like every game has a different story line, but if you look at the start of the year until now, it is not a team that is so far ahead of us now where we’re not competitive.” Quin Foreman, Liam Blackburn, and Jonathon Desbiens put the Warriors up 3-0 before Kale Howarth replied for Trail early in the third period. Blackburn then netted his 20th of the season into an empty net to round out the scoring on the night. The Warriors outshot Trail 43-35 with Matthew Greenfield getting the win and first star for West K, and Bailey MacBurnie, took the loss in net for Trail, and was the game’s second star, while Blackburn took third star honours. Despite the loss, the Smokies 6-4 record in December is a remarkable improvement over the past three years. Trail failed to win a single game in either December 2013 or ‘14 and the winless stretches half way through the season proved the decisive dagger to the heart of any playoff hopes. “It (December) was huge. We beat some pretty good teams and our goal was to put ourselves in a position to get into the playoffs, CONTINUED ON PAGE 9

seconds remaining in the second period to give Castlegar a 5-3 lead and their first win over B.V. in the 201516 season. “I thought our first and third periods in Castlegar were as good as hockey as we played, so just our second period wasn’t very good,” said Jones. “I think our goaltending wasn’t where it needs to be.

“We haven’t played 60 minutes in a while, so that’s what counts for the results. There’s lots of good hockey at times but just not the full 60 minutes.” Castlegar opened the scoring at 15:05 when defenceman Carson Wornig netted his first goal of the campaign beating Hawks netminder Drake Poirier CONTINUED ON A9

Smokies in playoff contention CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8 and we’ve done that now, so as a group we have to take the next step. We have to accept and be confident that this is where we belong and as a team we can accomplish this, which hasn’t been done for a while in Trail. So it’s exciting, whenever your playing for something on the line, it definitely makes things more interesting.” The Smoke Eaters play on the

road for their next five games, with games in Coquitlam, Chilliwack and Surrey this weekend. The Smokies return to the Cominco Arena to host the Powell River Kings on Jan. 17. Smoke Signals: The game against the 5-30-0-1 Eagles also should have heralded the return of former Smoke Eater Kurt Black to the Cominco Arena since requesting a trade in November. However, Black along with two other Surrey players

were suspended for the game after engaging in a brawl with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks on Friday. Black, Trent Huitema, Gage Mackie, and head coach Blaine Neufeld were given twogame suspensions, leaving the team shorthanded in Saturday’s match versus Trail. Three players from Salmon Arm, Marcus Mitchell, Mitch Newsome, and Cam Coutre, as well as head coach Brandon West were also suspended for two games.

Sawka stymies Hawks shooters CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8 with a hard blast from the point. Blake Sidoni tied it with 8:36 left on a setup from Evan Gorman and Jaxon Joseph, as the Hawks outshot the Rebels 17-6 in the period, but another strong game from Logan Sawka stymied Nitehawk shooters time and again. Castlegar turned it on in the second period rippling the twine four times with Tayden Woods and Ed Lindsey putting the Rebels up 3-1. The Hawks Tyler Ghiradosi cut the lead to one on the power play at 10:29 on a pretty pass from Braden Fuller, who then tied it 3-3 just 76 seconds later on another power play goal, this time converting a Tyler Hartman and Ghiradosi passing play. But Nick Headrick gave the Rebels the lead for good scoring with 2:38 to go in the middle frame for a 4-3 lead, and Brese made it 5-3 before the period was out, as the Rebels outshot the Hawks 16-9 in the period. The Nitehawks regrouped in the third firing 18 shots at the Rebel net. Fuller scored his second of the night to make it 5-4, but two goals from Rebels forward Mike Bhatoa in the final three minutes stifled any chance of a Hawks comeback. “I thought Sawka was great especially when he

had to be,” said Jones. “But there’s discipline problems and lots of little things, like they scored a goal because guys stay out there too long on a shift at the end of the second period. There’s just little things that might be because your mentally tired.” An emerging bright spot for the Nitehawks is Tyler Ghiradosi, who at 16 years of age contributed with six points over the past five games, and plays a physically dominating style of hockey, despite his youth. The Hawks outshot Castlegar 44-28 in the game, and went 3-for-6 on the power play, while Castlegar was 0-for-2. “We have to be better in some areas. I really thought our 5-on-5 play especially in our own end, we were victimized by some very poor defensive play so we have to get better at that for sure.” The Nitehawks play there next game on Saturday when they host the Nelson Leafs at 7:30 p.m. at the Beaver Valley Arena. “The season gets shorter from here on in,” said Jones. “You have to start using your time to get better, just focus on the little things - d-men walking the line, getting pucks through to the net - you know, we’ll get there.”

Isabella Bonacci

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beautiful, cherished mother and nonna Isabella Bonacci. Born on December 22, 1927 in Cerrisi, Decollatura, Province Catanzaro, Italy, Isabella passed away peacefully with her family by her side on December 30, 2015 at Poplar Ridge Pavilion in Trail, BC. Isabella is survived by her children Frank (Rita), and Rachela (Nigel) and her grandchildren Dina, Nicolas, Patrick, Jayleen, and Corbin. She was predeceased by her beloved Vincenzo, and her parents Saveria and Battista Molinaro, her brothers Ettore and Aldo, as well as her firstborn infant son Francesco. Isabella worked for many years at the Terra Nova, and the Riverbelle doing what she loved most – cooking. She was a loving and gracious wife, mother, and friend whose gentle way will always be remembered. Isabella’s pride was her grandchildren, who have many treasured memories of their nonna’s infinite affection for them. Isabella loved cooking for the family and we all looked forward to the gourmet meals and the delicious desserts. Her example of faith, patience, as well as courage, will carry us forward. She took pleasure in making many beautiful knitted and crocheted gems. Our lives and family gatherings will never be the same, but we take consolation in the fact that Isabella and our dear father Vincenzo lived a full life and now are reunited again. We were blessed to have shared so many years and joyous occasions with them. Our mother and nonna not only made our house a home, but she made it heaven on earth for us all. Words cannot express our utmost gratitude to Poplar Ridge Pavilion for taking loving and compassionate care of our mother these last years. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 10:30 am with Father Bart van Roijen, Celebrant. Entombment to follow at the Trail Mausoleum at Mountain View Cemetery. Bill Clark with Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services™ has been entrusted with arrangements. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made in Isabella’s name to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital Health Foundation (Poplar Ridge Pavilion) at 1200 Hospital Bench, Trail, BC, V1R 4M1 or online at www.kbrhhealthfoundation.ca You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence at the family’s online register at www.myalternatives.ca Always in our hearts, we love you Mummy, Nonna up to the sky. xxx Riposa in pace.

OBITUARIES & FUNERAL NOTICES Robert Gordon (Bob) Brown 1943 - 2015

Robert Gordon Brown passed away suddenly at his home in Trail, BC on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at the age of 72. He was born in Trail on October 10, 1943. Bob was predeceased by his parents Gordon Brown and Edith Brown Smyth and his stepfather Walter Smyth. He is survived by his beloved wife Maureen, son Michael Brown (Tricia), daughter Michelle Newman (Jon), and two stepdaughters Laura Brodowski (Peter) and Kristie Bruce (Ron). He is lovingly remembered by his five grandchildren Evan, Jenna, Ella, Georgia and Gemma. Extended family and friends also mourn his loss. Bob worked for Cominco for 33 years as a machinist/millwright. He loved teaching his children to downhill ski and enjoyed boating, camping, and spending time with friends and family. He had so many great memories of coaching his kids’ soccer teams. He also got into woodworking, especially with his friend Hank... and he found out, to his surprise, that he was really good at it! After retiring from Cominco, he was one of the original staff at Wal-Mart when the store opened in Trail. He was the familiar face greeting people as they came in, and many timed their trips to Wal-Mart around when they hoped they would see his smiling, blue-eyed, dimpled face at the front. After retiring from Wal-Mart, he worked on a part-time basis at Ferraro Foods and Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services. Bob’s family and his faith were the two most important things in his life. At 9am on any week day when his “brothers” from church were available, he could be found at Bagel & Brew Coffee Shop. They shared their faith, trials, challenges, and triumphs in a way that became an inspiration to many who came in for coffee and left with more... and the “brothers” strengthened and encouraged each other in every way they could. The family would like to thank the emergency services responders and the doctors and hospital staff for the way they respected and cared for our beloved husband, father and friend. We are so grateful for your kindness and concern. Thank you Dr. Aiken and Dr. Ksiazek for everything you did for us. Bob’s memorial service will be held at Gateway Christian Life Centre, 8320 Highway 3B, Trail, BC on Friday, January 8, 2016 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, Bob would appreciate memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or to a charity close to your heart. Rest easy Sweetheart and Dad, know that your generosity, laughter, and the memories you made with all of us will remain in our hearts and minds forever.

Mary – Ann (May) Campbell

It is with great sadness that we must say goodbye to “Gram” on December 30, 2015. Gram was born on October 25, 1932 in Trail, BC where she met and married Ted Campbell. They later moved to Fruitvale, BC. May worked for many years at the Fruitvale post office, helping everyone she could. She will be dearly missed by all that knew her. May was predeceased by her husband Ted, her sister Isa, and her brother Jim. She is survived by her children; Ray (Carolyn), Kelly (Tammy), Tim (Angie), seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. Interment will take place at a later date. Bill Clark with Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services™ has been entrusted with the arrangements. As an expression of sympathy, donations in May’s name may be made to a charity of your choice. You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence at the family’s online register at www.myalternatives.ca

B.C. swing band leader dies, missing 80th straight New Year’s show C ANADIAN PRESS

VA N C O U V E R - A man who helped Vancouverites bring in the New Year for decades died just minutes before the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve. Dal Richards was 97. His wife, Muriel Richards, says Dal and his band had been booked to play the New Year’s Eve party at the Hotel Vancouver, where he’d played from 1940 to 1965. But she says he became ill in November, and not wanting to disappoint an audience with a substandard performance, he decided to cancel. Richards received the Order of Canada in 1994. During his nearly 80-year string of New Year’s Eve performances, Richards also played at the Bayshore Hotel and the River Rock Casino. “Dal was always a real professional, consummate performer and he felt if he couldn’t be what he’d been for all the rest of it that he wasn’t going to put on a poor show,” Muriel Richards said in an interview on Friday. “New Years Eve was such a big thing to him and to not be able to do it really saddened him.” Demand picked up in the early 1980s and Richards cut records. Until he became ill, his band was still taking bookings for weddings, birthdays and conventions. Richards said her husband’s last performance was a Christmas party at the Vancouver Club. Dal was in hospital, she said, but he put on his tuxedo and joined his band at the party to take the stage and sing “As Time Goes By.” His family sang “Auld Lang Syne” to him on the Dec 30 because they didn’t think he’d last until another full day. He died at 11:41 p.m. on Dec 31.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - For fans of George R.R. Martin, winter is not coming - at least not right away. The “Game of Thrones” author says he missed a Dec. 31 deadline to finish “The Winds of Winter,” the sixth book in his popular fantasy series. That means the next HBO season based on the novel will start airing in April, before the book is published. The words “you won’t like it” appeared Saturday on Martin’s blog, reporting that “the book’s not done. ... I tried, I promise you. I failed.” Martin says he is working with HBO to ensure the show reflects the next installment of the “A Song of Ice and Fire” books - in which characters warn of impending doom with the phrase “Winter is coming.” With hundreds of pages and dozens of chapters written, Martin said he estimates it will still take months more if the writing goes well. “You can blame my travels or my blog posts or the distractions of other projects and the Cocteau and whatever, but maybe all that had an impact,” he wrote, referring to the single-screen Jean Cocteau Cinema he purchased and fixed up in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he lives. “For months now I have wanted nothing so much as to be able to say, ‘I have completed and delivered The Winds of Winter’ on or before the last day of 2015,” the 67-year-old author blogged. The truth is “sometimes the writing goes well and sometimes it doesn’t, and that was true for me even when I was in my 20s,” he wrote. updates of the

Calgary couple gets MONDAY & MOVIES subtle shout out on ‘Simpsons’ for cloned kitchen MONDAY EVENING 6:00

6:30

THE C ANADIAN PRESS CALGARY - A Calgary couple who renovated their kitchen to match a cartoon one on “The Simpsons” has been saluted by the popular TV show. Marcia Andreychuk and Joel Hamilton spent the past year turning their kitchen into a colourful match of Marge and Homer Simpson’s, complete with purple and red cupboards, avocado green appliances and corn cob curtains above the sink. They watched the Dec. 13 episode, as they do each Sunday, but missed the subtle name drop. A few days ago, Andreychuk put the show on again. As Homer and Bart are watching a hockey game on TV, a sports announcer can be heard referring to Andreychuk and Hamilton as players. “I’m like, ‘What?!’ and nearly fell out of my chair,” recalled Andreychuk. She then went to wake up her husband, who has been a big fan of the show since he was a kid. He was thrilled, she said. “Immortalized is far too strong a word but to be included in such a pop cultural icon television show that’s been running for so long ... Joel loves the show and it’s such a thrill for him especially. “And I just love the kitchen.” News of the couple’s kitchen project made headlines around the world earlier this year. Andreychuk didn’t want a cookie-cutter kitchen like everyone else and pitched the idea to her husband. He jumped on board. They recently completed the project. And while Andreychuk said it’s functional, some items in it are props. The teal blender on the counter doesn’t work. And the orange slim-line telephone on the wall isn’t connected. But it’s her happy place. “You should see that thing in the morning when the sun’s coming in,” Andreychuk said. “If I got out of the wrong side of the bed, you just walk into that kitchen and you can’t help but just take things a little less seriously and it puts a smile on your face.”

Dear Annie: I was raised in a devout Catholic family. When my husband and I married 30 years ago, we independently decided to leave the religious fold, but we never imposed our views on others. My eight siblings live within close proximity of each other, and I live 3,000 miles away. Over the years, most of my family has never missed an opportunity to impose their religious views on me. Even though I have made it clear that I am not interested, I am often subjected to family members sending me religious material, making offhand cynical remarks about my soul, or cornering me at gatherings to coax me back, share their anger or try to make me feel guilty. A few years ago, when my sister “Louise” and I had a disagreement, I was brutally chastised, told by her and others that it was my fault because I did not read the Bible. What is even more insulting is that most of my siblings have had major life problems (affairs, money issues, fraud,
