Homeless shelter full 10 days after opening Gladys camp remains; occupants decline to move to Riverside Laura RODGERS Abbotsford News

The new homeless shelter in Abbotsford is now full. The temporary winter facility’s 40 funded beds were filled by Dec. 31, according to Lookout Emergency Aid Society, the group running the shelter. Most clients are still staying there, and the shelter continues to run at capacity. It took only 10 days for the building to go from

an empty construction-trailer building on Dec. 21 to a full facility. Residents were brought into the low-barrier shelter gradually, to ensure those living there would have time to settle in and get along. The facility is running on $450,000 in operating funds from BC Housing. Made of six construction trailers on a city-owned lot on Riverside Road, the facility cost about $750,000 in city funds to construct. It will stay open until the end of April and is expected to reopen again

next winter. The shelter wasn’t big enough to take in every homeless person in Abbotsford, with a number of outdoor camps still remaining around the city – some by choice. A tent city still squats on swaths of city-owned land on Gladys Avenue, although a few people have left. Most Gladys tent city residents weren’t interested in moving to the shelter, according to Nate McCready of the local Salvation Army, who

Dad and daughter lose possessions A stolen U-Haul truck containing the belongings of a father and daughter from Saskatchewan was recovered in Abbotsford on Friday afternoon, but few items were left behind by the thieves. The truck had been stolen from South Surrey overnight on Dec. 29 after Michael Suiker and his daughter Meghan stopped to visit family en route to Victoria, where they were moving from Saskatoon. Suiker said he parked the 34-foot U-Haul truck and 18-foot trailer “about half a block away in front of a strip mall” near 34 Avenue and 152 Street at about 12:15 a.m. after completing a long leg of the journey from Calgary. The vehicles were gone the next

munities to shelters elsewhere, but they don’t refer anyone to another city based on space. Most people stay at Lookout’s shelters for about 25 days, Williams said. Most stay for a short time, and only once, though a minority have a harder time getting on their feet and stay for extended periods. There are also 25 shelter beds at the Salvation Army’s Centre of Hope in Abbotsford. In extreme weather, when people sleeping outside are in danger, more one-night beds are made available in church basements and community buildings.

Lookout staff said most people staying there were from Abbotsford. Full data for all 40 residents isn’t available, but at Lookout’s other shelters in the Lower Mainland, about 70 per cent come from the local community and 30 per cent from elsewhere. Neither the outreach team nor Lookout maintain a wait list, but they said beds in a shelter at capacity come open occasionally as some residents leave. Lookout executive director Shayne Williams said they’ll refer (and help transport) people with roots in other com-

Drug use is not allowed inside and tent checks are performed to enforce this rule. As for the origins of the new shelter clients in Abbotsford, McCready said the outreach team only connects with people who are already in this area, and his team doesn’t collect detailed background information. When the shelter was at 28 residents on Dec. 30,

works on the homeless outreach team collaborating with the shelter. He said an initial meeting with a tent city spokesperson went well, but by Dec. 31 the group decided the shelter wasn’t for them. “They said they’re happy where they are,” said McCready. “They understand they are welcome ... but they’re just not looking to come in.” City spokesperson Katherine Treloar said, “we are pleased the shelter is filling the need in our community,” and did not comment on whether the full shelter would impact city efforts to bring the Gladys camp to a close. A temporary winter shelter in Victoria, which opened on Jan. 5, took a different approach. Called “My Place,” that facility in an unused gym gives 40 residents private tents to sleep in, rather than an open sleeping area like the one utilized at Riverside. It was specifically opened in an attempt to remove a tent city on a provincial courthouse lawn. “People who were at the tent city don’t respond very well to shelters,” said Grant McKenzie of Our Place Society, which

Gang murderer dies in prison Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

A man serving a life sentence for a gang-related murder died on Boxing Day at Pacific Institution in Abbotsford. Gurwinder (Gogi) Mann, 39, was found unresponsive in the institution’s hospital. Staff members immediately began performing CPR, and emergen-

cy services were called, but Mann died. Cause of death has not been released. Mann began serving his sentence on May 31, 2003 for the first-degree murder of Gurpreet Sohi, 20, who was shot in his Delta basement in 2000. Also serving a life sentence for Sohi’s murder is Ravinder Soomel, who was also sentenced in

2010 in relation to another earlier murder – that of 20-year-old Jason Herle, who was gunned down by two men hiding in the bushes as he was leaving his parents’ King Road home with his girlfriend in November 1997. Soomel and co-accused Tajinder Bains each pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder in that case.

House values rise sharply in west Abbotsford in past year Across city, single-family home values up five to 15 per cent Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News

The value of a typical west Abbotsford home increased by around $50,000 in just 12 months, according to BC Assessment, which sent out notices this week to hundreds of thousands of property owners across the region. The owner of a typical west Abbotsford home assessed at $371,000 last year can expect an assessed value of around $424,000 when notices arrive in the mail this week. The exact change in a home’s assessed value depends on a variety of factors, including the size, location and age of a house. But generally, those living in the city’s west saw the value of their homes increase more than those in the rest of Abbotsford, according to BC Assessment. Because all homeowners pay the same residential tax rates, those whose assessed homes rose more than the

The assessed value of single-family homes in Abbotsford increased, on average, between five and 15 per

cent over the previous year. A typical central Abbotsford home saw a five per cent increase in value, from $376,000 to $394,000, while a typical east Abbotsford home saw an eight per cent rise in assessed value, from $435,000 to $472,000. “The majority of residen-

tial homeowners within the region can expect a modest increase, compared to last year’s assessment,” said deputy assessor Brian Smith. Townhouses in Abbotsford saw their assessed value rise between zero and five per cent, while the value of a typical condo saw no significant changes. The total assessed value of residential properties in Abbotsford rose 4.55 per cent over the previous year. Properties in the “business and other” class, which includes retail properties, office buildings and warehouses, rose 7.25 per cent. Properties are assessed based on their market value on July 1, 2015 and their physical condition on Oct. 1, 2015. Those concerned about their assessment can submit a notice of complaint by Feb. 1 for an independent review. For more information, visit bcassessment.ca.

Eight months in jail for child porn SPEN & ENTERD $100 TO WIN

Danial James Munroe previously pleaded guilty Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

An Abbotsford man has been sentenced to eight months in prison for two child pornography offences. The jail term for Danial James Munroe, 59, will be followed by three years of probation. Munroe was sentenced Dec. 30 in Abbotsford provincial court. He plead-

ed guilty in July to charges of possessing child pornography and importing or distributing child porn. Munroe had initially been charged with four offences, but charges of making or publishing child porn and another count of importing/distributing were stayed. He was arrested and charged in October 2014 after the Abbotsford

Police Department was notified by an outside investigator that on Feb. 4 of that year the possible distribution and possession of images of child sexual abuse had occurred from an Abbotsford home. Police raided the residence and seized items such as computers, phones, cameras, hard drives and storage devices.

ABBOTSFORD NEWS I Wednesday, January 6, 2016

Help provided, now apply law It has been a difficult road for the homeless in Abbotsford, the public, and city hall. It took an unfortunate incident involving a popular homeless camp in 2013 to snap this issue into focus and spur the city into action. That constructive response has been a long time in coming, as well, partly due to an extensive delay caused by a civil suit launched by advocates for the homeless. That was settled last fall, with a judge ruling that the homeless can sleep in city parks overnight, if other alternatives don’t exist. That condition has been addressed, with the creation of a 40-bed, low-barrier winter shelter on Riverside Road. That facility is at capacity now, since opening just before Christmas. It is a huge improvement over sleeping rough, and is coupled to a range of social supports, such as finding long-term housing, and connection with health services to deal with issues such as addictions and mental health. Another major, much-needed project – a permanent 20-bed men’s shelter – will open in 2017. The city has stepped way up from where it

was two years ago. And that means there is no longer a good reason for the so-called “protest” camp on Gladys, or on any other public property. The occupants of those sites had an opportunity to go to the new shelter, but stated they weren’t interested, and maintain they are “happy” where they are, according to an outreach worker. For some, the condition of being homeless, living in a tent, is clearly a matter of choice. However, there are limits to that, as the court recently found. The city indicated it would begin to take action on these unsafe, visually appalling camps by mid-January. Having made good on promises to help the homeless, and with due notice to occupants, it is now incumbent on city hall to clear out the squats – as much as a challenge as that’s apparently going to be. The homeless can set up their tents at night, but must pack up during the day. Inconvenient perhaps, but that’s the ruling they went to court to obtain – and the city is justified, if not obligated, to apply it.

The countdown is on for the 2016 BC Summer Games in Abbotsford, and later this month organizers are set to get the word out in a big way. Games officials are putting together a community event on Jan. 23, with the goal to increase public awareness of the event and attract volunteers. Event president Steve Carlton said the Games will set up at two main local locations, and also have five smaller sites around Abbotsford. The Abbotsford Recreation Centre and Matsqui Recreation Centre are the primary spots for the community awareness event, with food, refreshments and prize giveaways from 1 to 4 p.m at both. Swims and skates will also be offered for $2 that afternoon. “Instead of having a ceremony and inviting the public to hear us talk, we’re going to go out into the public and meet them where they are,” Carlton said. “ARC and MRC are our primary sites and the city has dropped regular price admissions to a toonie for locals on that day to go along with our event.” Tents and information booths will also be set up at five other local locations on Jan. 23, with Games officials targeting popular stores such as Costco, Save-On-Foods and Canadian Tire. Carlton said the volunteer base for the event is solid, but another 2,500 people are needed in advance of the Games. “We’re on track for volunteers and we’ve had a lot of people sign up, but we’re waiting for the flood of volunteers to come, which we anticipate will occur after our community awareness event and the torch-lighting ceremony later this year,” he said. “The community has responded really well, and we’ve brought on many local businesses and organizations as sponsors. It’s been a wonderful response so far.” The community awareness event runs on Jan. 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. The next big event for the Games is the torch ceremony at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium on April 13. Visit bcgames.org for more information on the event and for details on how to volunteer. The BC Summer Games runs from July 21 to 24 at various venues across Abbotsford.

This year, the Ukrainian Club of Abbotsford hosts its annual Malanka New Year’s dinner and dance on Saturday, Jan. 16 at Sts. Joachim and Ann’s Church hall, 2827 273 St. in Aldergrove. While most of the western world adheres to the Gregorian calendar which was established in 1582, many Ukrainians still recognize the holidays of the much older Julian calendar. The night of Jan. 6 sees a traditional 12-course Christmas meal being served in households, with a kolach (braided

The Ukrainian Club of Abbotsford hosts its annual Malanka celebration on Jan. 16. File photo loaf) as a supper-table centrepiece, and a didukh (or decorated sheaf of wheat) standing nearby. When the youngest member of the family announces that a star is visible in the night sky on Svyata

Vechera, the hospodar (or host) helps him light a candle, which is placed in the window. The candle is a signal to any traveller who is lost or prevented by weather from reaching home that a place is available

for him at the hospodar’s table. After a traditional prayer, the first of 12 dishes is served: a centuries-old delicacy of wheat and poppy seeds and honey. A week later, Ukrainians bring in the new year with their Malanka, or New Year’s celebration. The Malanka celebration in Aldergrove features a meal of Ukrainian cuisine (perogies, holoptsi and the like) and is followed by a dance with live music by S-Bahn. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the Yevshan Ukrainian Dancers perform at 6. Dinner is served at 7 p.m. Tickets are $50 for adults, $15 for kids ages seven to 15, and free for kids six and under. Conference on aging to bring together boomers and seniors Abbotsford Community Services to host February event A two-day conference on aging, health, and wellness for seniors is coming to Abbotsford this February. The Aging Together event, organized by Abbotsford Community Services on Feb. 12 and 13, will bring popular health radio hosts Drs. Dave Hepburn and Rob Sealey, B.C. seniors’ advocate Isobel Mackenzie, and plenty of workshops on everything from road safety to intimacy for older adults.

The conference runs from about 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both days. Before Jan. 15, one-day tickets are $25 and two-day tickets $45. After Jan. 15, prices rise to $30 and $55. The event is designed for seniors and baby boomers looking to take charge of their own health, caregivers of seniors, and those who work in the senior care sector. For more information, visit abbotsfordcommunityservices.com or call 604-859-7681.

Nature Club receives donation Funds to help with planting of trees and shrubs The Abbotsford Mission Nature Club has received a $1,500 donation from the Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC) as part of its Building Communities Together program. The organization was nominated by Jack Van Dyke, who is a member of CLAC local 29.

Van Dyke said the Nature Club’s aim is to cultivate an understanding and appreciation of natural ecosytems. “Over the past few years, the club has volunteered its services to enhance nature at Willband Creek Park. The park has many trails and serves as a major water retention area in

the Matsqui Prairie area of the Fraser Valley,” he said. The club has participated in planting more than 1,000 trees and shrubs in the nature park. The donation will allow the club to do more planting and maintain the trees and shrubs, as well as to enhance wildlife-viewing opportunities.

Blanket drive helps thousands More than 4,000 bags of warm clothing and blankets were collected from Nov. 16 to Nov. 23 in the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland as part of the 21st annual Realtors Care Blanket Drive. The donations will help an estimated 5,000 working poor and homeless in Mission, Abbotsford, Langley, Surrey, North Delta and White Rock. The donations were collected at 35 real estate offices across the Fraser Valley, sorted by 47 volunteers, and delivered directly to 22 local charities. One of the hallmarks of the Blanket Drive is that all donations remain in the communities in which they were collected. Many recipient chari-

ties rely on donations from the Blanket Drive to help them through the winter. Donations in Abbotsford went to the Salvation Army, Cyrus Centre, 5 and 2 Ministries, Raven’s Moon Resource Society, Village Threads Ministry and the Warm Zone. While the volume of donations collected this year in the Fraser Valley was less than previous years, realtor volunteers noticed that the quality of the donations was much better. The Realtors Care Blanket Drive is the largest and longest running campaign of its kind. Since it began in 1994, the program has helped more than 290,000 people.

Jake Virtanen’s golden dreams turned into a nightmare at the 2016 International Ice Hockey Federation’s world junior championship tournament. After winning a gold medal last year, Canada was eliminated in the quarterfinals with a 6-5 loss to Finland on Saturday. Canada’s undisciplined play cost them in the third period, as Virtanen took a pair of minor penalties, and defenceman Joe Hicketts was assessed a delay-ofgame penalty to put Canada down two

Abbotsford’s Jake Virtanen was held to one point in four games at the IIHF WJC hockey tournament. men. Finland scored on the ensuing fiveon-three-man advantage to notch the game-winner at 5:50. The tournament was considered a disappointment for Virtanen, who scored only one point in four games for Canada. His future is also up

in the air, with the Vancouver Canucks general manager Jim Benning stating the team will take some time to determine whether Virtanen will finish the season in Vancouver or return to junior with the Western Hockey League’s Calgary

Hitmen. The Canucks do have some time to make a decision on the star Abbotsford minor hockey product, as junior-eligible players can spend up to 40 games on an NHL roster without burning a year of free agency. Virtanen has played a total of 19 games for the Canucks this season. He scored 52 points in 50 games in junior with the Hitmen last season. Virtanen and the Canucks host the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday before welcoming the Tampa Bay Lightning to Rogers Arena on Saturday.

A group of Abbotsford gymnasts are heading to the 2016 Penticton BC Winter Games. Twisters Gymnastics athletes Michael Frew, Jeremy Filiatrault, Jadyn

Ansell, Megan Maclellan and Samantha Reitsema are all heading to Penticton from Feb. 25 to 28 to compete against some of the best in the province. Twisters athletes heading as wild cards,

eliminated A pair of Abbotsford curlers came up a little short in their respective divisions at the 2016 Tim Hortons BC Junior Curling Championships in Kamloops. Kim Bonneau, the lead for Team Loken, saw her team finish fourth in round robin play with four wins and three losses, but then lost 9-4 in the women’s divisions semi-final on Jan. 2. Team Loken plays out of the Delta Thistle Curling Club, and also features players from Surrey and Coquitlam. The event featured the top eight junior teams in the province, with

only the top four advancing to the playoff round. The men’s division saw Abbotsford’s Jordan Kiss lead his team to a fifth-place showing in round robin action. Kiss, who skipped the team based out of the Royal City Curling Club in New Westminster, captained his team to a record of three wins and four losses. The team narrowly missed qualifying for the playoff round, after losing 8-7 on Jan. 2. The winning men’s and women’s clubs qualify for the Canadian Junior Curling Championships in Ontario later this month.

SYME Jamie passed away peacefully, surrounded by family. Jamie was a testimony of God’s grace and healing. Almost 4 years ago, he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and given a survival rate of 4 to 5 months. Throughout his journey with cancer, he never wavered in his faith in God. His health care professionals often said that there was no predicting what Jamie’s future might be, as he blew holes in their predictions time after time. Born in Mississauga, Ontario to Eva and Bruce Syme. Husband of Kathryn Ann (Aitchison) Syme, brother to Heather, Stephen, Colleen, Brian, Patrick, Bonnie, Scott, Michael, Robin, and Laurie. Father to Bruce, Tamara, Eva, Jeremy, Paul, Robert, and Miranda, grandfather to Robin, Jordan, Leland, Colton, and Henry, greatgrandfather to Wesley and Ronald. Servant of God. A Memorial Service will be held at Grace Church, 2087 McMillan Road, Abbotsford, BC on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: K. KLIPPENSTEIN Heinrich (Harry) September 30, 1920 - December 11, 2015 Harry is survived by his 4 children, Joyce (Len), Bonnie, Glen, and Daryl (June), 8 grandchildren, and 12 greatgrandchildren. Harry was born in a small farming village just outside of Altona, Manitoba. He was the youngest of 9 children born to Bernard and Marie Klippenstein. He spent his youth working long hours on the family farm - a job he took great pride in - before serving in the army from 1942 to 1945. Shortly after, he moved to BC, had 4 kids and became a doting father. He loved hard work, going to the gym (he kept dumbbells in his room right to the end), visiting with his grand-children and great-grandchildren, walking around Mill Lake, feeding the ducks and talking to dogs. He was a sincere man with a giant heart who kept his one-of-a-kind sense of humor through even the toughest times: he’d always greet you with the tightest hug and an “Oh but gracious,” his way of telling you he loved you. In recent years, he accepted he was near the end of his life and often talked about “going home.” You’re home now Dad. We Love You. An intimate gathering was held with immediate family to remember and celebrate his life. Online condolences to the family may be made at:

VONK Reindert March 11, 1928 ~ January 4, 2016 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved “Opa”, Reindert Vonk. He passed away peacefully into the presence of his Lord on January 4th at the age of 87 at Cascade Hospice. He leaves behind his loving wife Maria, 4 children and their spouses: Margaret (Gilles) St. Pierre, Ron (Ina) Vonk, Sofia (John) Wyles, Marian (Ed) Warkentin, 17 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Jacob and his brother-in-law Wout. Rein was born on March 11, 1928 to Reindert and Sofia (nee Elst) in Driebergen, in the province of Utrecht, Netherlands. In 1951 he married Maria Jansen in Driebergen. He worked for the railroad in Rotterdam but housing was scarce following WWII. As a result, Rein and Maria moved to Edmonton in 1952 to build a better future for their family. In 1976 he moved to BC and bought a mushroom farm in Abbotsford. He was an active member of Gateway CRC church for 40 years. In his retirement years he would often be found helping around his strata complex and walking the Mill Lake loop. He was a funny, gentle and wise man who will be missed by many. The family would like to extend our appreciation to the staff at Cascade Hospice for their professional care and kindness. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at 1:00 pm at Gateway Community Church, 2884 Gladys Avenue, Abbotsford with Pastor Bert Slofstra officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Abbotsford Hospice Society.
