Province’s quit smoking assistance program easier to access

Photo black press

Smokers can get free nicotine replacement products for 12 weeks, once a year.

City snow removal crews continue today to clear the streets from the steady snowfall the area has received the past week. To aid in the clean-

up, residents are asked to please avoid pushing or blowing snow from their sidewalks, driveways and any windrows back into the street, after

the City plows have been by. “No one really likes their driveways filled in by a passing snowplow, but windrows come as a natural side

effect of snow clearing operations – it is just the way it is,” says Chris Zettel, Corporate Communications Officer for the City of Cranbrook. “The only way to avoid creating windrows is to not plow at all. And we all know that isn’t an option.” Avoiding leaving your vehicle parked on the street during snowfalls wherever possible will also help make clearing the streets easier for City plows. The City is also asking residents to be respectful of your neighbours and avoid filling their driveways, walkways and sidewalks with snow that you remove from your property.

year rate plan. Starting with the proposed four per cent increase in 2016, the independent B.C. Utilities Commission (BCUC) is reviewing if rate increases can be lower than what is capped in the rate plan. Insurance Corporation of B.C. basic vehicle insurance went up by 5.5 per cent on Nov. 1, an increase still subject to review by the BCUC. That works out to an increase of $3.70 per month added for the average driver. ICBC had proposed a 6.7 per cent increase to cover increasing costs of personal injury claims and fraud,

but the province gave it permission for a one-time transfer of $450 million from its optional insurance business to subsidize the basic rate. In a year-end interview, NDP leader John Horgan stopped short of promising to eliminate MSP premiums, but he called it a “regressive tax” that would be part of a broad review of B.C. taxation fairness if he wins the 2017 election. The Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation says the people who benefit from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s promised middle-class tax cut

will see most of those savings eaten up by provincial and municipal tax increases. Trudeau vowed to reduce the federal income tax bracket between $45,282 and $90,563 from 22 per cent to 20.5 per cent, and increase the rate for income over $200,000 from 29 to 33 per cent. The change would provide up to $2,000 in tax relief for middle-income earners, with dualincome households benefiting most, CTF federal director Aaron Wudrick says. Municipal taxes are expected to increase across the province in 2016, with local coun-

Terry Lake said the changes are to make it easier for smokers to quit, or to try again if they have relapsed after using the program before. It supplies 12 weeks’ worth of nicotine replacement products in each calendar year to B.C. residents. To qualify, people must have active Medical Services Plan coverage and be a tobacco smoker or chewer. The program began in 2011 and the province has spent $38 million on it so far. A survey of 3,000 users in 2015 found that about one in four re-

ported quitting smoking for some period, with half of those making it a month or more smoke free. Three quarters of survey participants reported smoking less after using nicotine replacement. The program also covers 12 weeks of prescription drugs Zyban or Champix, with cost depending on coverage under the Pharmacare program. Details are available at www.gov.bc.ca/bcsmokingcessation or from your doctor.

The province just made it somewhat easier to quit smoking. The B.C. government’s quit-smoking assistance program is now available to people who drop by a pharmacy to qualify for free nicotine replacement products. As of Jan. 1, 2016, participants no longer have to register by calling 8-1-1 to reach the HealthLinkBC medical advice service. The program has also expanded its offerings to include nicotine inhalers and lozenges as well as gum and patches. Health Minister

to zero. B.C. is now the only province in Canada with a health care fee, and it has risen about 40 per cent since 2010. Premier Christy Clark has defended the fee as a signal to citizens about the enormous cost of providing health care. BC Hydro rates have been politically dictated since Clark and Energy Minister Bill Bennett intervened to cap rate increases in 2013. Hydro rates jumped nine per cent in 2014, followed by annual increases of six, four, 3.5 and three per cent in the 10-

“Staff has received reports of arguments and spats between neighbours around the community where this exact issue has occurred,” Zettel says. “Please be mindful of where you put the snow you are removing from your property, so it doesn’t become a problem for your neighbour.” For more information about how the City clears the streets and why decisions are made the way they are, priority route maps and more, please visit our website at www. cranbrook.ca, and click on ‘Snow Removal Information’ listed under City of Cranbrook Links on the homepage.

cils preparing to set budgets for the new fiscal year that starts April 1. Port Alberni has proposed a seven per cent increase, and the CTF says it hasn’t found any B.C. municipalities yet that propose to freeze or lower property tax rates. With the rapid rise in property prices continuing in parts of the Lower Mainland, the B.C. Assessment Authority sent out 37,000 letters in December, warning single-family homeowners to brace for a big jump in their assessed value.

Cranbrook police dog aids in rescue of back country boarder RCMP received a report that a 23 year old Creston area man was lost on Thompson Mountain while snowboarding. The man had been accompanied by a friend on snowmobile. It is common practice for skiers and snowboarders to access the backcountry by snowmobiles, each taking turns on descents. The snowboarder had gotten lost and became separated from his partner, who in turn notified the RCMP. The Creston RCMP immediately activated the Creston Search and Rescue team who were assisted by Nelson Search and Rescue. With the additional resources of an RCMP police service dog and handler from Cranbrook, SAR volunteers and the RCMP dog team went into the area that evening and located fresh signs of the snowboarder. Dog licensing reminder Dog owners in Cranbrook are reminded to have their dogs licensed each year; that is the message from City of Cranbrook Bylaw Services Office. If you currently have a dog license, the City of Cranbrook will be sending you a renewal notice in the mail, if you have not already received it. You are asked to please wait until you get your renewal notice before visiting City Hall to purchase your 2016 dog license. Licenses issued for dogs are valid for the calendar year (January 1 to December 31) and

can be purchased at City Hall. The licensing fee for a sterile dog is $40.00, and the fee for an intact dog is $60.00. Under the City of Cranbrook Animal Control Bylaw 3555, any person that is a resident of the City and who is the owner of a dog two (2) months of age or older, needs to ensure that they have a valid dog license. No person shall own, keep or harbour an unlicensed dog in the City of Cranbrook. “I think the public would be surprised at the number of stray

dogs we are required to take to the SPCA, because the dog has not been licensed,” says Naomi Humenny, Bylaw Services Officer. “As a result, we have no access to the owner’s information and no way to return the dog home.” For more information about dog licensing, you can contact City Hall at 250-4264211. To review the City of Cranbrook Animal Control Bylaw, please visit the City website at www. cranbrook.ca.

Views Opinion: Resolutions for provincial MLAs by Dermod Travis It’s that time of year when many of us consider making a few resolutions for selfimprovement. In the spirit of the season, it only seems fitting to suggest five resolutions for the province’s MLAs. Buy a thesaurus An online search in the B.C. government’s newsroom turned up 148 results for “highly respected,” 361 for “strong economy” and a mind-boggling 1,610 for “world-class.” B.C. is home to world-class infrastructure, world-class safety protocols, destinations for worldclass sporting events, world-class wineries, and a world-class isotopes research tunnel. It’s as though there’s a control function on the keypads of government flacks for the term or a prize to see how many times it can be worked into a single news release. Environment minister Mary Polak may have won in July, with a release that used world-class three times and world-leading once, presumably for creativity’s sake. Be more discerning in photo-op mates In three years, Premier Christy Clark has had photo-ops with Indonesian billionaire Sukanto Tanoto, former chairman and CEO of South Korean-based

POSCO, Mr. JoonYang Chung, and Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak. Tanoto is the wallet behind the Woodfibre LNG proposal in Squamish, POSCO has coal interests in B.C., and Petronas – majority shareholder in Pacific Northwest LNG – is owned by the Malysian government. Either Clark has had a string of incredible bad luck or she’s going to develop a reputation for bringing it with her. Shortly before meeting Clark, Tanoto was fined US$205million for evading taxes. A few months after his meeting with Clark, POSCO’s chairman was fired after allegations he – and other former executives – operated a $9 million slush fund. And Malaysia’s prime minister is under investigation over US$700 million that’s missing from a stateowned enterprise and mysteriously seems to be sitting in his personal bank account. Can the mantra or live up to it In 2011, Christy Clark promised to run “the most open and transparent government in Canada,” which is odd because she was part of Gordon Campbell’s administration who had also promised to run “the most open and transparent govern-

ment in Canada.” In 2013, Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil stood outside the legislative chamber and declared he would run “the most open and transparent government in the country.” Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne promised that hers would be “the most open and transparent government in Canada.” Luckily for Wynne, her predecessor – Dalton McGuinty – set the bar low. Former Alberta premier Alison Redford promised she would run “the most open and transparent government in Canada,” until her expense claims got in the way. Not to be outdone by mere colonial interlopers, British Prime Minister David Cameron vowed to run “the most open and transparent government in the world,” aptly illustrated by his government releasing 400 news releases on the day the Commons adjourned for its Christmas break. Oh, minor grammatical point, only one government can be the most open and transparent at a time. Work it out amongst yourselves, maybe odd numbered days for Ontario, even numbered for B.C. Fall back on 19th century technology for answering media questions and embrace 21st century innovations for backups For media inquiries face-to-face is best, otherwise try the tele-

phone. It’s quaint, but it works. Goes without saying, but delete the delete button and build a firewall to protect political staff from online threats like Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo. Stop regurgitating talking-points ad nauseam This from just one paragraph of a 2010 email by then-transportation minister Shirley Bond: “P3s have a proven track record of saving taxpayers money while being delivered on time and on budget. There are six P3 projects operating in B.C., all on time and on budget. Nineteen more projects are also scheduled to be delivered on time and on budget.” From a 2015 letter to the editor by Partnerships BC CEO Amanda Farrell: “As taxpayers, we can all celebrate that every project to date has been delivered fairly, on time and on budget.” Probably not a wise idea to have signed your name to the letter when you were about to announce that one of those projects will be delayed for the second time, particularly when you’re the person in charge of it. Five resolutions for the political class to ponder. Until then, Happy New Year.

On Dec 18th Royal Canadian Branch 24 presented the following donations: (Left) Clive Brown (Legion president) Darcy Verbeurgt (SD5) Rob Martin (Legion First VP) with a $400 cheque. (Right) Clive Brown, Jackie Brown & Tammy Pocha (Street Angels) Rob Martin with a $200 cheque.

Local furniture store delivers beds to needy community kids

Photo submitted

This holiday season the Ashley elves, Joey, Charmaine, Mark, Jackie, Kim and Christine, donated another 10 mattresses to kids in need in the Cranbrook area. Ashley Furniture HomeStore in Cranbrook, B.C proudly announces that they have surpassed last year’s bed package giveaway for “A Hope to Dream” program, which seeks to provide less fortunate local children with comfortable mattresses for a good night’s sleep. A portion from every mattress sold at the Ashley HomeStore in Cranbrook goes towards a full sleep package which consists of a twin memory

foam mattress set with sheets and comforter set (retail value of $850). The staff also pitched in and raised enough money to buy each child a Christmas gift. “We’re so proud to be part of a program that’s making healthy sleep a reality for thousands of underprivileged children across North America -- and we’re proud of everyone who’s helped make it a reality,” says Joey Hoechsmann, Ashley HomeStore li-

censee in Cranbrook B.C . “There are over 200 Ashley Furniture HomeStores participating in A Hope to Dream, not to mention dedicated partners and community members who continue to make a difference in the lives of many children. Without their help and passion, the program wouldn’t be where it is today. It truly is a group effort.” The selection process was aided greatly by a partnership with the Boys and Girls

Club and The Salvation Army to select 10 lucky kids in the Cranbrook area. On Dec 12th, the Ashley elves visited each home and helped set up the new sleep sets. “It is a very humbling experience,” Hoechsmann explains. “All of our Ashley team members were greatly moved by the gratitude and warm responses they received from the well deserving families.” The goal for 2016 is to deliver even more new beds into children’s homes. Children are a vital part of any growing community, and it is important to find a way to help them live healthier and more

productive lives. A good night’s sleep has a positive impact on all areas of a child’s life, from academics and extracurricular activities, to relationships with friends and family.

To nominate a child for the Ashley Hope to Dream program, stop by the Cranbrook Ashley furniture HomeStore to fill out an application.

2016 Jeep Wrangler Overall: Jeep’s iconic off-roader gets its usual barrel of packages and editions. Drivetrain: The 3.6-litre V6 makes 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, but isn’t it about time for the 5.7-litre Hemi or the Chrysler turbo-diesel?; sixspeed manual transmission and optional five-speed automatic. Jeep’s iconic Wrangler enjoys such a hardcore following, but to keep them coming back for

more, the company keeps finding new ways to personalize. Of course few owners goes boulderhopping and canyon-crawling in their Wranglers (the Jeep, not the Jeans), and the vehicle has been slowly and methodically updated to also be more friendly to urban commuters. But do good seats and a modern powertrain hurt the offroad experience? Of course not, so it’s really win-win. But there’s more. The back seat of the four-door Unlimited model as well as the soft top both fold

easily using, amazingly, just one hand. And the hard-top, doors and bumper caps can more easily be removed with a new standard “torx” tool kit. Both two- and four-door Wranglers can be ordered with a premium top that reportedly is easier to clean and its three layers add a degree of noise insulation. Unchanged is the Chrysler-designed 285-horsepower V6 that connects to either a six-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic. The combo provides for an effi-

ciency rating of 14.2 l/100 km city and 11.0 highway (14.8/11.7 for Unlimited versions). Base Sport, Sport S, Sahara and Rubicon trim levels continue; the first three feature part-time four-wheel-drive with optional limited-slip rear differential. The tough-customer Rubicon uses the Off-Road Rock-Trac unit with its extra-low-range gearing, front- /rear-locking differentials for greater agility and 32-inch off-road rubber.

Is your credit a worry? Do you or a family member need a new or used vehicle? Cranbrook Dodge has the answer! And you don’t have to pay those high interest loans to build your credit! Cranbrook Dodge can now offer rates as low as for people that may be paying 10%, 15%, 20% even 26%! Save thousands today and call Jason or Callie for pre-approval!

Province settles out of court with fired drug researchers

B.C. Ombudsperson Jay Chalke. By Tom Fletcher The B.C. government has reached the last two out-of-court settlements with drug researchers fired in 2012 over alleged mishandling of patient treatment data. Researchers William and Rebecca Warburton, a married couple, have been invited to reapply for access to B.C. government health data as part of the settlement of their lawsuits against the government, deputy attorney general Richard Fyfe said Tuesday. “Dr. Rebecca Warburton and Dr. William Warburton acknowledge that they did breach some rules and procedures,” Fyfe said. “The province recognizes that such breaches were moti-

vated by their intention to further the research goals of the Ministry of Health, and not for their per-

sonal gain.” Eight researchers lost their contracts or jobs after allegations about use of confidential patient data in the evaluation of drugs for eligibility under B.C.’s Pharmacare program. Former MLA Margaret Macdiarmid, newly appointed health minister at the time, accused the researchers of misusing data and having conflicts of interest, citing a police investigation that the ministry requested but never followed through with. William Warburton, a health economist on contract, dropped his lawsuit against the ministry in May 2015, but continued a defamation action against Macdiarmid until this

week’s settlement. Rebecca Warburton was a director of research for the health ministry, fired in October 2012. Justice Minister Suzanne Anton said the government is continuing to work with

Ombudsperson Jay Chalke to determine how the wrongful suspensions and terminations came about. Chalke was appointed last spring, and in July the government changed legislation to give him the extra

authority he requested to investigate the situation. Chalke had made it a condition of taking the case that his office be exempted from confidentiality agreements that had been reached with some researchers.

Five researchers were earlier paid undisclosed settlements and reinstated. Roderick MacIsaac, a graduate student, committed suicide several months after his research contract was terminated.

Barnyard Bulletin Winter tips for animal lovers When winter’s chill sends you scurrying indoors, don’t forget your furry four-footed pals and their simple needs. To make sure your animal friends stay safe and warm here are a few simple guidelines . For dogs and cats: 1. Never leave your cat or dog alone in a cold car. Cars hold in the cold, like a refrigerator. 2. Use booties and winter sweaters to help keep your pets warm during outdoor excursions. Pets are sensitive to severe cold and are at risk for frostbite and hypothermia. 3. It is important to supply adequate housing. Have a dry, draft-free shelter that is large enough to allow the pet to sit and lie down comfortably but small enough to hold in body heat. The floor should be raised off the ground and covered with shavings or straw. You can use as well electric heating but be sure to only use heating products specifically made for animals. 4. Wipe your pet’s paws and underside after being outside. Salt and ice melt can irritate and burn. 5. Be aware of cats seeking warmth under vehicle hoods. If there are outdoor cats, remember that they need protection from the elements as well as food and water. 6. Pets who spend a lot of time outdoors need more food in the winter because keeping warm depletes energy. Check your pet’s water dish to make certain the water is fresh and unfrozen. Our larger animal friends need special consideration too. For a healthy horse during the winter follow these important tips:

1. All horses should have shelter from the elements. If you do bring your horse indoors, don’t close up your barn, instead leave it open to ensure good airflow inside. A closed-up barn can lead to poor air quality that can affect a horse’s respiratory health. 2. Just like humans, horses need exercise all year long even when it’s cold outside. If conditions make winter riding impossible, turn your horses out daily in a large pasture or paddock. 3. As temperatures drop, your horse burns more calories to stay warm. For some horses, this means considerable weight loss. Consider increasing his hay rations as it provides an excellent source of calories. 4. A horse will not stay properly hydrated if his water is frozen. Snow and ice are no substitute for clean, unfrozen drinking water. Invest in a heating device specifically designed for horse waterers and troughs. 5. Handle your horse daily it helps you to evaluate his body for problems such as illness, injury, weight loss, lost shoes or cracked hooves. 6. Even in the winter you horse will need regular farrier care, regardless if barefoot or shod, ridden or not. 7. As well you may consider a blanket for a senior

horse and all horses if no shelter is available.

We are responsible pet people who put their fourlegged friend’s health in front of our own. Remember, if you’re not healthy, you won’t be able to care for your pet. When tending to your furry friends’ needs in the winter, stay warm, stay safe and stay healthy because there’s s o m e o n e counting on you every day.

OBITUARY

Johann “John” Romich “Johnny” 1926 – 2015 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of John “Johnny” Romich on Thursday, December 24, 2015 surrounded by his family. Johann was the middle child of Maria and Josef Romich. He was born in Grünbach, Austria on April 21st, 1926. John grew up in the nearby town of Puchberg, playing the violin with his father and brother in local pubs. Later, he played the clarinet with the City Band and carried his love of music with him to the end. Beautiful music would always bring a tear to his eye. In 1953, at the age of 27 John decided to come to Canada. He made his way to Calgary, where he became a drywaller. He was also a founding member of the Austrian Club and the Schuhplattler Verein. In 1955 he was sent to Cranbrook for work. He loved the mountains and area so much as they reminded him of home, that he decided to stay and open his own drywall company. He met Brigitte in 1957 at her aunt’s restaurant, Glur’s Cafe (now Apollo Ristorante) and they were married in 1959. They bought Parkview Trailer Court and Laundromat in 1962, and in 1970 they opened Johnny’s Laundry & Drycleaning. Skiing had always been a great love of John’s. He was a member of the Austrian Ski Patrol & Rescue, and once he was semi-retired he joined the Kimberley Guest Guides. Most weekends you could find him at the hill with his family. Most of all, John enjoyed time with his family, clearing the bush on his property and having daily coffee with his friends at A&W. John leaves behind his loving wife Brigitte, daughters Susie (Jeff), Heidi (Jordon), granddaughter Marlies (Ryan), great grandson Toban Johann, his sister Margaret and nieces Karin (Ken) and Linda. He also leaves behind in Austria, his daughter Veronika, grandson Michael, great grandchildren Tobias and Rosa and many other relatives. He was predeceased by his son Martin Johann, his brother Joseph and his nephew Gerhard. A memorial service for John will be held on Friday, January 8, 2016 at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook at 2:00 pm. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in John’s honour may do so to the charity of their choice. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com
