▼ CHURCH WINDOW
A window to Lake Country’s past memories The window photographed here has been in storage for nearly 30 years. It was originally installed in 1966 in St. Margaret’s Anglican Church in Winfield. The church had to be decommissioned and destroyed to make way for Highway 97 to be built. Anglican Church vicar Trevor Fisher said
many people who have had a connection with the Anglican Church in Lake Country from the 1960s will remember this window and link it to events that took place in their lives. The window was donated by the widow of the Reverend Adam Lett who was the vicar of St. Mary’s, Oyama in the 1940s.

Newsmaker of 2015: Changing political landscape ALISTAIR WATERS For 45 years, the federal riding of Kelowna-Lake Country and its previous incarnations were considered virtual safe seats for right-ofcentre candidates. But that changed Oct. 19 when Liberal Stephen Fuhr not only toppled the popular longtime Tory incumbent Ron Cannan, he also wrestled away a riding that had sent Conservative, Reform and Canadian Alliance MPs to Ottawa in every election since 1968. That was the last time a federal Liberal won here, largely on the strength of what was known then as “Trudeaumania,” a national love affair with then Liberal leader Pierre Elliott Trudeau. In October, the country experienced a more subdued, modern version of Trudeaumania, as his son Justin, following in his famous father’s footsteps, led the Liberals back to the political promised land after 10 years in the wilderness, much of it languishing as the third-place party in Parliament. Locally, Tory blue was replaced with Liberal red as voters here joined the rolling “red tide” that swept across Canada on

But the local campaign that resulted in Fuhr’s historic win was not confined to the mammoth 11-week period between when former Prime Minister Stephen Harper made his short walk to Rideau Hall from his Sussex Drive home in Ottawa to have the governor-general drop the election writ and election night. For Fuhr, a divorced 46-year-old father of a 16-year-old son and a decorated, retired RCAF fighter pilot, the bid to win a seat in Canada’s Parliament stretched back a lot farther.
He was one of the first Liberal nominated candidates across the country. That was in June
2014, nearly a year and a half before the election. “I knew people would not be thinking about
the election that far out, so I set out to develop relationships within the party first,” said Fuhr. As the new MP sees it, politics, like so much in life, is based on relationships with others. It was a strategy that has already paid off in the early days of his new job, getting him in the door to meet with the men and women of his party who are now cabinet ministers. When he was a member of the Canadian Air Force, Fuhr admits he supported the Conservatives, based largely on his view then that the Tories were the best option for supporting the military and its members. But he grew increasingly disillusioned with

this so wrong, what else could they get wrong?” he asked himself. that party over issues such as the government’s ill-fated plan to replace the RCAF’s CF18 fighter planes and its treatment of veterans. Fuhr said while he knew from his own experience that the plane chosen to replace the CF-18 was not the right one, he was astonished to see Harper’s Conservative government stubbornly refuse to reconsider the plan. “If they could get

Passages of 2015: Stephen Harper I first met Stephen Harper when he was running for the Canadian Alliance leadership in 2002. Speaking to a group of Fraser Valley members concerned that the party had split over the leadership of Stockwell Day, Harper didn’t mince words because a local reporter had showed up on a Saturday morning. He explained his prediction that no matter who leads the conservative movement started by Preston Manning, the national media would work against it. “The press is owned by big-L liberals and staffed by small-L liberals,” Harper said. “Preston was too cerebral; Stock was not cerebral enough. I’m not sure where I will be, but the media will always be on the other side.” Harper’s cold war with national media is a theme that runs through his decade as prime minister, peaking in 2015 with the most slanted election coverage I’ve
BC Views
Tom Fletcher ever witnessed. The celebration continues over Justin Trudeau’s victory, with the supposedly non-partisan federal bureaucracy cheering along with much of the national media. Harper’s assessment of major newspaper ownership is no longer accurate, except for the Toronto Star. But the dying tradition of owners looking up from their accounting ledgers to endorse a political party continued, with the Postmedia chain and the Globe and Mail pointing out that Trudeau’s rash promises didn’t add up.
Endorsements were a brief interruption in the media assault on Harper’s record. His government’s plan to welcome 10,000 refugees, unveiled way back in January 2015, was portrayed as heartless and feeble, while Trudeau’s 25,000 by Christmas represented the generous character of the true Canada. As it turns out, the Liberals were hard pressed to reach even the 10,000 mark. But they’ve put out a rash new promise to make it 50,000 at some point in the future, so the media’s newfound message of sunshine, hope and change continues. Those modest $10 billion annual deficits that Trudeau promised, and Harper warned against? Borrowing and spending will far exceed that, but we’re assured that’s because they were based on inflated Conservative financial forecasts. In fact, independent private sector forecasts are now the key reference
for government budgets at the federal and provincial level. None of them predicted the further slump in energy prices that continued through 2015. And cooking the books before an election isn’t really possible any more, thanks to the establishment of the Parliamentary Budget Office. That was a Harper innovation, along with scheduled elections. And that Trudeau pledge to raise taxes on the wealthiest Canadians and use the proceeds to finance a tax cut for the middle class? That one didn’t add up either. For one thing, wealthy people have a variety of legal ways to reduce their taxable income. Here’s an actual frontpage headline from the Globe and Mail, reporting this unfortunate fact, well after the election: “The way Liberals gauged response to new tax rate explains gap.” So it was just an understandable oversight, you see.
Trudeau’s star turn in Paris, where he pronounced that “Canada is back” in the battle to control the world’s weather? The official submission from his bloated delegation to the UN climate meetings was actually the existing Conservative plan, which includes phasing out coal-fired electricity generation. Harper generally represented a preference for the individual over the state, a concept that at one time was known as “liberalism.” This was illustrated by his preference for parents rather than a nanny state to administer child care. He advocated free trade, small government and low taxes. We’ll see how that legacy survives the new government and its media cheering section. ▼ PERSONAL INJURY
Logic missing when auto insurer deals with injuries
There are common arguments some insurance adjusters make that are so lacking in logic, science and law that I consider them an attempt at cheating. This one has to do with a willful blindness to the scientific reality that a percentage of those suffering soft tissue injuries in crashes will never fully recover from their injuries. I say “willful blindness” because even orthopaedic surgeons, the medical specialty favoured by ICBC to provide “independent” opin.ions against injured victims, will agree with that scientific reality when cross examined. This scientific reality is never shared with you. Instead, it is assumed that you will fully recover, which is thankfully the reality for a much higher percentage of injury victims. That assumption is bolstered by optimism expressed by your medical doctor and others on your medical team. 5 Optimism is an important medical tool. The mind is a powerful healer. The more optimistic you are about your own recovery, the more likely your optimism will be borne out. I am certainly not saying that your in-

juries and the symptoms you are feeling are “just in your head”. No, they are very real. There is an established scientific interrelation, though, between the psychological and the physical. If the optimism is not borne out, though, it is unfair and hurtful to say: “You should be better by now”. You absolutely wish that you were better by now. Certainly, the inattentive driver “should” not have crashed into the back of your vehicle. There’s no concept, though that you “should” be better by now when you clearly are not. By not enjoying a complete recovery, you have joined the unfortunate minority statistic of those for whom an inattentive driver has permanently harmed. It is also unfair to point to other occupants of the same vehicle, who
joined the majority of crash victims in enjoying a complete recovery, as an indication that you should not still be having symptoms. That’s as nonsense and hurtful as telling anyone contracting a disease that afflicts a minority of people that it’s somehow their fault for joining that unlucky minority. You are dealing with a bodily injury claims adjuster who, you believe, has expertise in this stuff. He or she is a representative of the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia, a crown corporation, which you have paid insurance premiums to year after year. That inherent credibility causes those words to sow seeds of doubt in your mind about your entitlement to fair, financial compensation for your injuries and losses. “Maybe there is something wrong with me that I haven’t recovered,” “Maybe there was something more that I could have done which would have led to my recovery.” Those seeds of doubt help the claims adjuster to convince you to accept a level of compensation that is far below what is fair. It is a level of unfairness that I call cheating and it is every bit as distasteful in my view
as those pathetic worms who try to cheat the insurance company. When is it time to ‘lawyer up?’ ‘Lawyering up’ can change the injury claim process. Is it cheating for an insurance adjuster to mislead you, or is deception fair game in a negotiation? This is the third in a series of columns dedicated to the exposure of insurance adjuster deception. This time, my focus is on the artificial nature of the negotiation of a personal injury settlement and the misleading advice some adjusters give about the consequences of not making a deal. An inattentive driver causes you injuries and losses. Our civil justice system gives you the “claim” or “right of action” against that driver for fair, financial compensation for those injuries and losses. It is the claim that is negotiated with an adjuster who works for the inattentive driver’s liability insurance company. The adjuster will often make the first offer. You want nothing more than to be treated fairly. Negotiations, gener-
ally, are uncomfortable for you. Your discomfort is compounded by your complete lack of familiarity with this claim thing and what settlement amount might be fair. Many people have told you not to accept the insurance company’s first offer. You follow that advice and reject it. The adjuster will ask you how much compensation you think is fair. Of course, you don’t have a clue. You fear being perceived as greedy if you respond with too high a number. I’ve written before about negotiating the purchase of a beautiful stone carved chess set while vacationing in Mexico. I had no idea what it was worth. I didn’t want to seem greedy or insulting by offering too little in response to the $200 price-tag, but I also didn’t want to be ripped off. I ended up being ripped off ! The reality is that it doesn’t really matter what number you give the adjuster. The adjuster is working within a fixed “authority” of compensation he or she is permit-
ted to offer. If you have reached a plateau in your symptoms after following every medical recommendation available to you, such that your symptoms are likely to continue indefinitely, that “authority” will never come close to fair compensation. Yes, the offer will increase. That “don’t accept their first offer” advice will turn out to be good advice. Perhaps a bit of back and forth will ensue. On reaching that authority, the adjuster will be firm that it is all the compensation he or she can or will offer. Often, your choice will be described as one between settling your case at that amount or going to trial. I have also heard of some adjusters saying that if you choose to “lawyer up,” that offer will be off the table, insinuating that their settlement position might go down. Not having any idea that the offer is completely outside the ballpark of fair and fearful of a trial, you are likely to accept the offer. The truth is that the adjuster you are dealing
with is only the start of the negotiation. “Lawyering up” automatically results in a new adjuster being appointed and a completely different “authority” process. Another truth is that trials are required in only a very small percentage of personal injury claims. It’s absolutely not a choice of “accept this or go to trial.” The true choice is to “accept this or hire a lawyer and the negotiation will continue”. A trial is necessary only if, after a prolonged, further negotiation, the much higher new level of authority is so far below what is fair that you decide to go through the process in order to achieve justice.
This column is intended to provide general information about injury claims. It is not a substitute for retaining a lawyer to provide legal advice specifically pertaining to your case. Paul Hergott is a personal injury lawyer at Hergott Law in West Kelowna. paul@hlaw.ca

Without water, life would not be possible
TAYLOR FROM A4
finitely variable patterns of water crystals fall from the sky, the weight of each one almost too small to measure… Yet together they can bring 200-horsepower cars to a standstill, break branches off trees, collapse roofs and warehouses. If they’re so light, I wonder, why do my muscles hurt so much after shovelling my driveway? Snowflakes are a lesson in cumulative effects. A single action may have imperceptible impact; an accumulation of individual actions can change history. Individual protests against the Vietnam war carried little weight; a million protesters in Washington broke an administration.
One black woman refused to give up her seat on a bus; millions of marchers took up her cause and toppled discriminatory laws. One man died on a cross for daring to live differently; two billion followers today shape the world’s ethics. If there are miracles in this world, the water that snowflakes are made of must be one of them. The miracle is not that Jesus walked on water. The miracle is the water he walked on. Water consists of two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen— one of the strongest chemical bonds known. No other chemicals can split its components apart. Yet water is utterly unlike its component elements. Hydrogen is
highly flammable—remember the Hindenberg? Oxygen ignites anything. Yet water disproves that argument that the whole is the sum of its components. Water is the exact opposite of its components—it extinguishes flames. Water is paradoxical. We cannot live without it. Sometimes, we cannot live with it. Few things are more destructive than a flood. If ocean levels rise, the most valuable real estate on earth will re-enact Atlantis. Maybe all miracles are also paradoxes. Water is the closest thing we have to a universal solvent. We flush it through our industries, our kitchen sinks, our toilets. When epidemics strike, we wash bacteria off our hands.
Yet bacteria originated in water. Without water, life itself would not have been possible. When we search for life in space, we search for evidence of water. Water may be the ultimate miracle.
I try to remember that as more snowflakes start drifting down out of the sky. Jim Taylor lives in Lake Country. rewrite@shaw.ca

He loves children and is very good with them, but again, if you are considering adopting Norm and have children in your life, we strongly recommend you bring them to the Shelter to meet Norm BEFORE making that adoption commitment. Norm is a typical hound whereas they tend to howl and bay when left alone for longer periods of time and they like to sing along with fire trucks and police cars. Because hounds are driven by their nose to track small animals, Norm’s new guardians should have a secure fence to keep him from roaming. The hound breed is a sensitive one and will need patience and positive reinforcement, and the treat or two or else they will shut down..love and patience always wins out in the end. If you believe you have the right home for Norm, we encourage you to ask the Kelowna SPCA Staff to meet him.

Cannan won’t stop serving community ‘cold turkey’ KATHY MICHAELS Ron Cannan’s federal election riding loss at the polls Oct. 19 may have been one of the biggest political upsets Kelowna-Lake Country has ever had. In addition to the simple fact it’s difficult to find anyone with an unkind word about Cannan, he was running in a region that has been voting in Conservative governments of varying stripes since Pierre Trudeau was prime minister. For many, his continual re-election was viewed as a reality of Central Okanagan life. When he lost to Liberal opponent Stephen Fuhr, however, that reality shifted, and it’s something Cannan has been gracious about. “From going full speed to having no iPad or Blackberry or anything—that was a real shock to the system… but that’s just democracy,” Cannan said. “It’s been a privilege and an honour to serve this community (in federal politics) for 10 years, and nine years before that on [Kelowna] city council. It’s a fantastic

community and I look forward to continue being a part of it.” For those who have been to any community events in the months
since the federal election, it’s clear he means it. Whether it’s pouring coffee at the Gospel Mission’s annual Christmas dinner or show-
ing up unexpectedly to sit through some of the city’s budget talks, Cannan is still very much a part of this community. “My wife and I were
talking about this last night,” he said. “I am not going to stop being who I am. I am part of the community. I appreciate the opportunities I’ve
been given to give back.” And, he sees it leading to new career possibilities. “I was just chatting with the former [Kelowna] mayor Walter Gray and his wife, and we were talking about the federal money that’s available for infrastructure and water,” he said. The aim has been for something to come about that would see a bit of uniformity in the way Kelowna’s water is managed. Currently, there are five water purveyors in Kelowna, and they provide water to area residents through varying means. A provincial call for some cohesion among purveyors has yet to be answered, and Cannan is considering entering the fray as a mediator so forward momentum can be gained. “The ultimate goal is to come up with the best water provider for Kelowna residents,” he said, noting that a master plan has been discussed for some time. The elephant in the room is governance, and Cannan believes that he can do the consensus
building needed to move forward on that point. “Water is the most valuable resource, and we need to ensure it’s managed as efficiently as possible so we have a good long-term sustainable supply,” he said, adding that most irrigation districts in the region have a good water management reputation. In addition to new career opportunities, Cannan said he’s looking forward to seeing deals made in previous years pay off, regardless of who’s the MP. Among the list of projects he’s awaiting are Highway 97’s widening from Edwards Road to Costco, the John Hindle Drive to Highway 97 and the downtown Kelowna innovation centre. “I’m passionate about all these things,” he said. Although Cannan has stepped out of the federal arena of politics, Conservatives still have an Okanagan presence with the re-election of Dan Albas as MP for the new riding of Central Okanagan-Similkameen-Nicola.
▼ NEWSMAKER OF 2015
Liberal offers fresh path for Kelowna-Lake Country NEWSMAKER FROM A3 from the RCAF, he had worked as a private pilot for a wealthy Egyptian businessman and ran an Okanagan-based business that made aviation equipment. With the Liberal nomination in hand, Fuhr tabbed well-known local political rainmaker Wayne Pierce as his campaign manager. Pierce had just come off managing rookie Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran’s successful civic election campaign and he also helped get former Kelowna mayor Walter Gray elected for his “comeback” term in 2011. But when Fuhr first asked Pierce to come on board, Pierce was reluctant. In their first meeting, Pierce was blunt in his assessment of Fuhr’s chances. “He pulled out his binder, leafed through
the pages and told me I couldn’t beat (inclubent Conservative) Ron (Cannan),” remembered Fuhr. Cannan, a likeable guy with a lengthy history in the riding, was considered a popular, hard-working constituency MP running for a party with a lock on the riding. A 10-year MP, he preceded his time in Ottawa by serving several terms as a Kelowna city councillor. If the Conservatives were popular here, Cannan was even more so. But Fuhr won Pierce over. His new campaign manager, however, had one condition—the target of the Liberal campaign would be Harper, not Cannan. The strategy worked. But as Pierce put it later, for the plan to succeed Cannan had to go to.
‘‘
Stephen Fuhr Tapping into the anti-Harper sentiment sweeping across the country while also fending off at times the growing popularity of the NDP, Fuhr raised a few eyebrows at the last all-candidates meeting when he bluntly told the audience the NDP would not form the next federal government, despite leading in the polls at times during the campaign. On election night, Fuhr won the riding by 4,000 votes. But while quick to acknowledge the advantage
I recognize that as the MP, I represent everyone in Kelowna -Lake Country, whether they voted for me or not. It’s an enormous responsibility…one I take very seriously. Stephen Fuhr
the anti-Harper sentiment gave his campaign, he also believes the win was not solely a protest vote. “There are 99 ridings across the country where Conservatives were elected or re-elected, and that’s a good sized Opposition,” he said. “So there is still support out there.” But in his mind, going forward Kelowna-Lake Country is both Tory
blue and Liberal red. He sees his win as a change for the riding, a change where there will likely be a real choice for voters in future. And that, he added, will likely only get stronger as the riding’s demographics continue to change with more new people arriving and the area continuing to grow. Once in office, Fuhr, like his predecessors, had to set up an office— two, in fact—and do so quickly. One in Ottawa and one here. And like his predecessors, he found the budget to do that needed to be stretched as far as it would go. He has now opened an office at 1420 St. Paul St. in downtown Kelowna but is still waiting for telephone and Internet service. For the time being, he can be reached through his parliamentary e-mail
address: stephen.fuhr@ parl.gc.ca. That address is being monitored by his staff at the Ottawa office who will forward inquiries. Fuhr has hired the two people who ran Cannan’s Kelowna and Ottawa offices to do the same jobs for him in both cities, saying their knowledge, continuity, expertise and non-partisan approach are invaluable. Fuhr was passed over for a cabinet post as there was plenty of competition for the obvious military-related portfolios he may have been considered for with a former general and a much-decorated “war hero” (Canada’s new defence minister) also elected as new Liberal MPs. While Fuhr has made no secret of the fact he would like to have ministerial duties one day, for now he sees his role as
a back-bench MP as an advantage to focusing all his attention on the riding and the constituents he now represents. After being sworn in in early November, Fuhr hit the ground running, immediately meeting with the new veterans affairs minister to discuss the re-opening of a veterans affairs office here. He said he plans to follow the same schedule as his predecessor, while Parliament is in session, flying east to Ottawa on Sunday and returning Thursday so he can meet with constituents. “I recognize that as the MP, I represent everyone in Kelowna-Lake Country, whether they voted for me or not,”Fuhr said. “It’s an enormous responsibility…one I take very seriously.”

Unlocked vehicle invitation to a thief
What is a regular

Police urge everyone to secure their vehicles following a rash of break-ins in Lake Country during the holidays. Three different breakins on the same day were the result of vehicles not being locked. In each case valuables or garage door openers were left in the unlocked vehicles. On Dec. 29, at 9:09 a.m., the Lake Country RCMP responded to a report of a theft from a vehicle parked in the 9800 block of So-
nata Road. Investigators have determined that the vehicle had been left unlocked by its owner. The suspect located a garage door opener inside the vehicle and subsequently gained entry into the victim’s garage where they stole fishing gear and tools valued at over $2,000. A short time later police received a second complaint of a similar incident which occurred in the 9700 block of Santina Road. The suspect in

find any evidence to suggest that the garage had been opened or entered by the suspect. “The part that is most disconcerting to me is that registered owners are leaving their vehicles unlocked, along with their garage door openers inside,” said Const. Katrina Claypool of Lake Country RCMP, “doing so allows the suspect to access the victim’s garage where they could potentially steal even more valuable property.” “Police would also like to suggest that the public consider going as far as disabling their automatic overhead garage doors when they are home, as some newer model vehicles with the garage door opener built in can sometimes be used when the vehicle is turned off,” added Const. Ask The Dentist! by Dr. Lina Jung, DDS
Whitening - Yeah or Nay!
Q:
My niece is obsessed with having whiter teeth. She has tried every over the counter product in the drug stores, and had her teeth lasered apparently to make them brighter. I noticed the other night at dinner that she was holding her mouth after eating some cold dessert, and it sure looked like an ice cream headache. Do you think she has damaged her teeth?
A: Whitening has a place in dentistry, and like just about anything else it is entirely possible to go overboard on the idea. New patients show up at the front desk wanting their teeth whitened. Some are what has been referred to as 'whitening addicts'. Most want it in an hour as the advertising has certainly worked on them. Almost universally their focus is on whiter teeth, not necessarily healthier teeth. We have numerous options. All of them have a prerequisite – which is clean teeth. It sounds like a foregone conclusion, but some will request whitening and not want to bother having their teeth cleaned properly! If there is a layer of plaque coating the teeth, no whitening procedure will work as planned.
Q A
What are the recent changes in the new down-payment rules and what does it mean?
There are new changes coming in the down payment rules for homes priced over the $500,000 price mark. Buyers of homes priced under $500,000 Canadian dollars can continue to make a minimum down payment of 5% of the purchase price, this rule remains unchanged. The new change affects homes priced over $500,000 in that the down payment required has increased to 10% of the price portion above the $500,000 benchmark. This change to the down-payment rules comes into effect on February 15, 2016. I believe that this rule change will increase the activity for both buyers and sellers who would normally wait to sell or purchase a home in the Spring so that they can make a smaller down-payment on homes purchased for over $500,000. The long term impact of this change is expected to save real estate consumers money while also allowing home owners to build more equity in ther homes. For more information on how this change could impact your home purchase or sale, I look forward to hearing from you!

What question would you like a qualified professional to answer?
Often patients who are having unrelated cosmetic work completed may choose to whiten their existing teeth and then match up the shade of their new dental work to match their 'new' appearance. You mentioned that your niece appeared to have sensitive teeth if she was grimacing when eating something cold. This isn't unusual, and the severity or duration will be certainly affected by the quantity of bleaching solution applied. Options vary from retail whitening 'kits', to in office bleaching trays with clinically certified gel which must be applied by dental professionals, to take home trays of clinical gel, to the popularized 'Zoom!' whitening that has received much media attention recently. It is frequently advertised as 'one hour whitening' which is possible depending on how many shades are desired. As with any procedure, fees are all over the map. Some systems advocate bypassing the dentist and using 'whitening pens' to do it yourself. We suggest caution. Some systems sold through non dental sources have been found to use abnormally high levels of bleach which may cause burning of the mouth or gums. Some promises made can never be realized because of decades of staining from tobacco, wine, and coffee. We recommend getting your mouth healthy first, and then concerning oneself with the colour. There is an appropriate order, and this one has the patient's best interests at heart!
Another issue is just 'how white' you want your teeth. We've heard it termed 'Liberace white' which is brighter than gleaming. Dentists have shade charts to match colours on crowns and partials, and many factors such as natural staining of teeth, age, etc. come into play when choosing a preferred colour.

I’m always a little nervous when friends pop the cork off of a champagne bottle on New Years Eve - is this reasonable?
Concerns about champagne corks have been bred into optometrists since the beginning of time (or at least the beginning of our profession). Almost every professor in every optometry school will regale their students with tales about how they knew a guy who knew a guy who suffered a cork injury to the eye. While these injuries are exceedingly rare, the damage that can and has been done is admittedly devastating. Corks leave a champagne bottle at nearly 50 mph and are the perfect size to fit nicely into our eye sockets. Projectiles hitting the eye at this speed will almost certainly result in irreparable retinal damage and vision loss. Armed with this knowledge, my hope is that your resolution this year will be to make sure you cover your corks in tea towels before popping the bubbly. Hearing Loss - What is it?
(Part ||) Sensorineural Hearing Loss occurs when there
is damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or hearing nerve in the brain. Some of the important causes of sensorineural hearing loss are: • Hearing loss caused by excessive exposure to loud noise • Viral or bacterial infections • Medications such as aminoglycoside antibiotics (gentamycin, streptomycin, erythromycin and vancomycin), ASA, and certain drugs given for the treatment of cancer (cisplatinum) • Meniere’s Disease - an inner ear disorder which produces fluctuating hearing loss, periods/attacks of vertigo, full feeling in the ears and tinnitus (subjective sounds in the ears) • Aging - gradual age-related hearing loss called presbycusis and affects 30% of persons over the age of 65. • Acoustic Neuroma (also called vestibular schwannoma) - is a tumor which is located between the ear and the brain and which usually affects balance as well as hearing. Acoustic neuroma’s affect about 1 in every 100,000 Canadians. In 95% of cases the tumor affects only 1 ear and in 5% of cases the problem is linked to an inherited syndrome called neurofibromatosis Type 2. Sensorineural hearing loss is typically a permanent type of hearing loss that usually can be helped with a hearing aid or other type of assistive listening device. Rockets veteran lives up to his potential WARREN HENDERSON If many people are surprised to see Tyson Baillie leading the Western Hockey League in scoring this season, Lorne Frey is not among them. The Kelowna Rockets’ assistant GM and director of player personnel said the 20-year-old centre is simply doing what the club expected of him in his final season of major junior hockey. “We projected a couple of years ago, that if he was still here as a 20-year-old, he’d be right up there with the top guys in the league,” said Frey. “(Baillie’s) always been a scorer, he’s been in the league a long time, and he’s just gotten better every year. I don’t think a lot of us with the team are surprised at all.” Through the Rockets first 40 games this season, Baillie led with league with 63 points on 24 goals and 39 assists. For Baillie’s part, the 5-foot-11, 195-pound forward expects nothing less of himself in his last tour of duty in the WHL. “I felt like I could do this,” said Baillie, the 53rd overall pick in the 2010 bantam draft. “As a fifth-year guy, a 20-year-
old, I think a lot was excepted of me, but more of it comes from what I expect of myself. I expected to be a leader and I’ve tried to live up to that.” Because of what’s perceived as his less-thanfluid skating style, the Fort Saskatchewan, AB, native has had his share of detractors over the years. But the doubts of others has only served as extra impetus for Baillie to succeed. “There have always been naysayers and there still are, but that’s what drives me and motivates me,” he said. “I feel like I have a passion for the game, a passion to score goals and to win, so I think that’s what the keys are for me.” Frey said Baillie has worked hard at improving his skating abilities over the years and more than holds his own against other top players in the league. Any deficiencies Baillie may lack, Frey said he more than compensates with work ethic, skill and hockey sense. “The thing he has always brought and still does, is work ethic,” Frey said. “He works hard and he has a good skill level to go along with that. He has a great shot, great

The major midget team won in both 2010 and 2014, before coming up short in its bid to go 3-for-3 last year. “It’s a great tournament for the whole community and we’re happy to support it,” said Okanagan Rockets’ GM Braeden Pistawka. “It’s a tournament that showcases a lot of skill.
win a WHL scoring title. Jesse Schultz, in 2003, and Colin Long, in 2009, both came close but settled for second best each time. “There’s a long way to go,” Baillie conceded, “but right now it’s pretty cool to be on top of the league in scoring, a lot of great players have been there. “A lot of great players have come through with the Rockets, so to become the first for our team would be a huge honour.” And it’s not just in 2015-16 that Baillie has been a prolific offensive producer. He is the sixth all-time scorer in the history of the Rockets franchise—dating back to Tacoma—with 276 points (as of Tuesday). The over-age centre is also well known for being a clutch performer, having delivered more than a few big goals during his career, including five game winners in last season’s playoff run. It’s a role Baillie thrives on. “I always like a good challenge, I like when the pressure is on me to perform,” he said. “The big game situations, when the game’s on the line, it doesn’t make me nervous, it just makes me want to be the goto guy.” “For us, it gives us a chance halfway through our season to play a lot of meaningful games and to showcase a lot of our player to scouts who come out to this tournament.”
