HAPPY NEW YEAR

wishing everyone a prosperous

A local man has died after falling through the ice on the Kettle River just east of Grand Forks on Wednesday (Dec. 30). The BC Coroner’s Service has confirmed the deceased as Thomas Charles Grubisic, aged 54, of Grand Forks. Grubisic fell through the ice at approximately 2:45 p.m. An RCMP press release stated that a witness saw Grubisic and called police. “RCMP officers arrived on the scene and spotted Grubisic through binoculars and observed him in the water hanging on to the ice edge,” said Cpl. Dan Moskaluk, district advisory NCO, Southeast Division, in the release. “RCMP officers were a distance away when they spotted him and were unable to reach him prior to Grubisic losing his grip and going under.” On Thursday, RCMP dive teams and search and rescue personnel were able to locate and recover Grubisic, deceased, from the river. The crews, which included personnel from the RCMP, fire/rescue, ambulance, search

and rescue units from Nelson, Penticton and Grand Forks, and cold water trained firefighters, found the body at around 11:10 a.m. on Thursday after searching for a couple of hours.

The coroner’s report stated that tracks in the snow indicated that Grubisic was trying to walk across the ice covered river in an area just south of Highway 3 near the Riviera RV Park.

Nothing is rubber stamped and all 13 directors are tuned into regional district business, says Grace McGregor. “We’ve been working hard on becoming a unified board and I believe we have that,” said McGregor, director for Area C/Christina Lake. “People are reading their agendas, paying attention and asking questions,” she added. “I think those conversations are what make the board even better.” Now entering her third year as chair of the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) board, McGregor is eager to start things up in the new year, beginning with a streamlined timetable. “What we’ve been working on is stacking meetings, piggy-backing if you will, and simplifying it a bit,”

she explained. “So people aren’t on the road all the time.” There are currently 19 committees, not including select committees, and winter travel can be especially cumbersome between Grand Forks and Trail. Beginning January, Committee of the Whole days are planned, meaning two or three committee meetings scheduled over the course of one day instead of three separate days. “We are giving that a try and hoping it will work,” said McGregor. “Because it will free up time for elected officials to spend more time in their respective communities, and take on other portfolios they’ve wanted to do, but haven’t had the time to do.” Another trial starting in the new year could keep agenda matters moving along during the winter months despite the weather.

Broadband Internet service was upgraded in the Grand Forks location this month, allowing for telecommunication in future situations when driving conditions are poor. “I would like to make this clear that we are not looking at video conferencing to take over board meetings or face-to-face meetings,” McGregor clarified. “We are looking at video conferencing for committees when weather is bad or things prevent us from getting together,” she said. “Or, if someone wants to do a board presentation, it’s not always convenient for people to come to our little world…we can still do the work without putting it on the back burner, and sometimes that information is what provides good understanding and good decision making.” Another undertaking launching in the new year is an overall review of the organization that is meant to

help improve both governance and administration. “I think, quite frankly, our people at the regional district are very, very busy,” she said. “We may find out, they are too busy.” The goal is to identify which operations are working efficiently as well as areas that require improvement. “I think people get lost in the ideas of cutbacks and they forget communication and good service is also the primary goal,” McGregor continued. “If you can cutback and not lose service then fine—if you can’t, then you need to find a different way,” she added. “If you really care about people getting the right information, sometimes it just costs more, period. “So this is something I am going to find very interesting and I think, people are going to be a little surprised.”

1971: IWA tradesmen wage now $6.04 1906 Residents of the city were aroused in the early morning by an earthquake that was severe enough to have shaken the buildings but no property damage was reported. 1911 The valley had enjoyed a mild winter up until the end of last week when the temperature, registered at the meteorological station at Mr. Law’s ranch, dropped eight degrees below zero, 1921 J.T. Lawrence was again named as director of the annual meeting of the Grand Forks branch of the B.C. Fruitgrowers’ Association. 1926 Grand Forks kept pace with the improving tone of the outlying districts: completed buildings for last year were the high school structure at the cost of $50,000 and the Odd Fellows Hall for $10,000. 1931 New electric street lights have been installed on Bridge Street from First to Third, and on First from Bridge to Winnipeg Avenue. 1936 Work has started on the proposed new water storage reservoir, 30 miles up the North Fork, to supplement the water supply for the city’s hydro plant. 1941 J.A. McCallum, first city clerk of the city of Columbia, and later Grand Forks, passed away at the age of 66. 1946 The hill on Fourth Street has been closed to traffic to allow for safe sleighriding for the children. 1951 Pansies in December and buttercups in January are the result as the mildest winter in many years continues in the

valley. 1956 Nick Dergousoff and Peter DeWilde, John Pankoff and Lynn Thompson, took the first bonspiel in the Grand Forks curling season.

1961 Rev. E. Bus and Gwen operated O.K. Bakery since 1949. 1986 A Grand Forks girl, now attending UBC in Vancouver, has been chosen as one of 158 hosts for the 1986 Expo. Sandra Ruff has been employed for the past two summers at the Boundary Museum. She is studying home economics. 1991 Grand Forks residents bundled up for the holiday as temperatures dropped to -34° Celsius. The heritage building is one of four in Greenwood that are amongst the oldest standing original wood frame structures in B.C. 2001 The provincial government thinks the citizens of Grand Forks are using too much water. Municipal Affairs Minister Jim Doyle recently announced a $10,000 grant to study the benefits of water metering, a step aimed at reducing water demand within the city while accommodating future growth. 2006 William Edward Salikin of Grand Forks was critically injured in a suicide bomb attack in Kandahar. He is with the 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry based out of Edmonton. Canadian diplomat Glyn Berry was killed in that same attack. 2011 Vaagen Brothers Lumber will operate the Midway mill, it was announced this week. The Memorandum of Offering was released with details, and discussed with potential investors in the West Boundary. The memorandum gives details on the operator that has been chosen (Vaagen hails from Colville, Wash.) and the shares that can now be purchased by locals.

Snow related motor vehicle accidents Grand Forks RCMP responded to 11 collisions involving motor vehicles due to road conditions over the past two weeks. Most of those occured on Highway 3. “The majority of those involved were people driving too fast for road conditions and sliding off the road into the ditch or hitting other vehicles,” said Cpl. Philip Crack. Impaired drivers stopped On Dec. 22, police stopped a driver on Granby Road as a result of a complaint. “Checks indicated he was impaired,” said Crack. “He blew a fail on an ASD and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition under the immediate roadside prohibition legislation.” On Dec. 28, a 23-year-old female was stopped after avoiding a police stop. “A

On Dec. 29, police responded to a 9-1-1 call from a Grand Forks business about a man who was acting erratically. “It was determined that he was bear-sprayed,” said Crack. “The male is known to police and was not cooperative with the investigation. He didn’t tell us what happened.” New Year’s quiet

Crack said that New Year’s Eve was pretty quite in the Grand Forks area with only six files received and no major incidents. In all there were 91 files in the past two weeks including three false alarms.

A Dodge pick-up truck collided with a Honda Civic on Monday morning at around 8:30 a.m. near the bridge on the corner of Granby and Central (Highway 3). The driver of the Dodge pulled out onto the highway from Granby and hit the Civic head on. Cpl. Richard Lanz said there were minor injuries and that the driver of the Dodge, a 64-year-old Grand Forks man, was issued a ticket for failing to yield after a stop. Craig Lindsay photo

The co-founders of the Ponderosa Music Festival are stepping up in a big way to help Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC (HFHSEBC) rebuild a home for a family in Westbridge. A donation of $5,100 has been received from the co-founders of the Ponderosa Music Festival, Kris Hargrave and Kia Zahrabi, to be used for the Winn family rebuild. They held a benefit concert in Vancouver in November with many of the bands performing that were scheduled to be at the Ponderosa Music Festival in August that was cancelled due to the wildfires. HFHSEBC made the announcement last week in a press release, stating that the donation will help rebuild the Winn family home that was destroyed in Westbridge during the August wildfires. A new and welcomed partner to the Winn family rebuild project is Harmony Homes, who have donated the costs of designing the home and providing the blueprints. The Harmony Homes Boundary representative is Bryan Fitzpatrick, and together with HFHSEBC will be finalizing the design for the new home

in the near future. HFHSEBC also acknowledged the generous donation of $5,000 from Community Futures Boundary to assist with the rebuild. “Our heartfelt thanks to the board of directors and Executive Director Wendy McCulloch for their demonstration of leadership in standing together when confronted with a disaster in our region,” said executive director Bob Huff. “We would also like to state our gratitude to the national association of Habitat for Humanity affiliates in Canada. HFH Southeast BC has received financial support from as far away as Ontario for the Winn family rebuild. Thanks also to the BC affiliates in Kelowna, and Upper Fraser Valley for their financial support.” The goal for the organization is to raise $100,000 and have the Winn family back living on their property by the fall of 2016. HFHSEBC will begin construction on the Winn family home this spring with the collaboration of key businesses and individuals in the Boundary region. “Rebuilding will be made easier with the generosity of our community,” said Huff. Grand Forks fortunate

It’s great to see someone who was born and raised in Grand Forks doing well in the world. Selena Demenoff is a second year medical student at UNBC in Prince George and recently won a prestigious award. Demenoff is planning to open a practice in Grand Forks or the area when she graduates. She is another shining example of someone who has not only done very well for themselves but also plans on returning to the area and contributing. Demenoff is a firm believer that the health of a person is very much determined by their surroundings. To that end she wants to become an advocate for unmet needs in the Boundary. “Promoting health is not always sufficient to support a community, but empowering individuals to make changes in their own lives can be,” she said. When many rural communities are struggling to fill health care needs, Grand Forks is very fortunate to have one of our “bright lights” doing well and planning to return and give back to the community.

Fighting aside, hockey is a violent game by nature On The Ball CRAIG LINDSAY A local resident recently posted on social media that he had taken his grandson to the Border Bruins game on Saturday at the arena and after witnessing several fights, he left the game and would not be returning. “A Bruins game is no place for children,” he wrote. As a reporter I have covered many hockey games over the past six or seven years. I also played minor hockey from the age of six to 18 and then, after a brief hiatus, recreational hockey and oldtimers hockey. So I believe I speak with some experience on the subject. It is admirable for parents to want to protect their children and keep them safe; that is completely understandable. I’m not a parent. I do have a couple of nieces and I didn’t want to see them

play rugby when they were in school. I certainly cringed when they got bumped and pushed in basketball. For myself, there were certainly injuries growing up and playing hockey. I still bear a few scars from the pre-face cage days. I also had a few bigger injuries like a dislocated shoulder and bruised hips. We didn’t have a lot of fights in our games. Of course, I only played house league so maybe there were more at the rep level. The couple of fights I was in were usually over pretty quickly. Growing up I would often watch the junior hockey games, the junior A Vernon Lakers and then the Cranbrook Colts and senior Cranbrook Royals. There were certainly the occasional fight but I can’t recall ever being really riled up or disgusted. In most cases hockey fights are between two consenting players. The players know what is happening when they fight. Any fight in junior is a game misconduct. In the professional ranks

such as the NHL, it’s a basic fiveminute penalty in most cases. Why is there fighting in hockey? Why is hockey the only major sport with fisticuffs? In basketball, baseball and even football, it’s very, very rare. The reasons for fighting in hockey vary but are usually along the lines of retaliation for a prior play, to try and gain momentum for your team, to intimidate the other team, and to protect star players. Commentator Don Cherry is a long-time advocate of aggressive play and has said that there is a “code” in the NHL where it is respectable to use honourable violence (fighting) to deter dishonourable hockey violence (cheap shots and dirty play). Is fighting good or bad for hockey? Fighting aside, hockey is a violent game by nature. From an early age, hitting is a big part of hockey. It’s a game of short spurts—go hard for one minute and then sit and rest for two minutes. Adrenaline rises and testosterone is boosted leading to more

physical encounters. Many hockey fans watch the game because of the hitting and the fighting. It’s a vicarious way of releasing pent up frustration and stress for many. Until about 20 or 30 years ago, little thought was put into protecting the players. Sure there was equipment, shoulder pads, knee pads, helmets, gloves and so on, but it’s only been recently that hitting from behind and head shots have been banned and experts have begun looking at the long-term damage of fighting and hitting. Bob Probert was known as one of the toughest fighters in the NHL during his career. Sadly he died at the age of 45 of heart failure. It was later discovered that he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative disease of the brain found in athletes with a history of repetitive brain trauma. Probert had a total of 355 fights over his 16-year career. More than 20 deceased professional footballs players have

been diagnosed posthumously with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Another tragic case was that of Derek Boogaard, an enforcer who played in the NHL with Minnesota and the New York Rangers, who died at age 28 of a drug and alcohol overdose while recovering from a concussion. Boogard was also diagnosed with CTE, which can only be seen after death. Both Probert and Boogard had drug and alcohol issues as well. It’s hard to say whether those two cases are the “tip of the iceberg” or rare cases helped along by substance abuse. As for the Border Bruins, anyone watching this year can see how much faster and better they are than last year or even earlier in the season. Here’s hoping that the young team can get it done on the ice without having to resort to too much fisticuffs. These young fellows play hard and deserve to have good crowds cheering them on.

It is important for our Boundary community to “rewrite the story” we tell ourselves about climate change. There is something we can do, despite the huge corporate and government interests in main-

taining the status quo. We have yet another large BC Timber Sales proposal to cut a huge amount of forested watershed in the Granby River drainage without appropriate public consultation, we are getting winter again after a pathetic winter drought while the European Alps have no snow, the second largest lake in Bolivia dried up in December. A letter in last week’s Gazette from Rocco and Janet Catalano was topped with the unfortunate headline, “Problems with FortisBC.” The headline is unfortunate because the Williams Lake couple were by no means saying they had a problem with Fortis; in fact, they were congratulating Fortis employees. “I wish to go on record to say how pleased my wife and I were with the time and effort, which the employees of Fortis put in, to help us out in a big way!” the letter read. The Gazette sincerely apologizes for the misleading headline.

Voter’s Challenge still waiting on results CHELSEA NOVAK Rossland News

It’s now a new year, but we’re still waiting on the results of the Community Voters’ Challenge following October’s election. Once the results are in, one community will be declared voting champion — having achieved the highest per cent increase in voters for the region. But before the results can be tallied, the organizers behind the Community Voters’ Challenge need access to the results by poll, and that information still hasn’t been released by Elections Canada. According to Mike Chapman, one of the organizers, they were originally hoping to have those results shortly after the election. “We assumed that would be the case, but Elections Canada has said that they want to have all their i’s dotted and t’s crossed, and until they have

Future doctor Demenoff aims to return home CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

A local medical student has received the British Columbia Rural Interest Award, which is given to a UBC medical student who has an interest in entering rural medicine once their training is finished. Selena Demenoff of Grand Forks is currently in her second year at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC)’s Northern Medical program in Prince George. Demenoff was thrilled to receive the award, and hopes to set up a clinical family practice in or near Grand Forks. “I was delighted to win the award,” she said. “I want to thank everyone who has supported me through my continued educational journey.” Demenoff was born and raised in Grand Forks and graduated from GFSS in 2009. She had an early passion for medicine and has cultivated that ever since graduating from high school. “Growing up in a rural community, I was close to family, extended family, friends, community and culture,” she said. “It gave me a strong sense of belonging. It also taught me that it’s not what you do in life but why you do it that counts.” Upon graduating from high school, Demenoff went to UNBC where she completed her Bachelor of Health Sciences with a major in Biomedical Studies with honours in 2013. She then began medical school in the fall of 2014 and is currently in her second year. “I have thoroughly enjoyed both academic programs,” she said. “I have been interested in effective rural

Singer songwriter Lance King has come to the aid of a crowdfunding campaign aimed at helping parents faced with a diagnosis their child will be born with Down syndrome or other severe special needs. As the father of an adult child with Down syndrome, Lance is keenly aware that a special needs diagnosis does

not mean life is over, and instead can be the beginning of a “brand new sunny day.” For every time Lance’s song Brand New Sunny Day is played on the radio, he will contribute $5 toward the Options of the Heart campaign (up to $500). He hopes this song, dedicated to people living with disabilities, will become the anthem for this campaign and others championing the cause of people living with special needs. • See SUNNY DAY page 20

Bruins game begins with honours CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

The Border Bruins pulled off a strong win on Saturday at the Foundation Builder’s game at Jack Goddard Memorial Arena. The Bruins, who were led by a hat-trick from local player Brandon Savaia, won the game 6-3 over the Spokane Braves. Before the start of the game, the Bruins honoured the 1973-74 Bruins management and players who were divisional champions that year. The game was marred by a second period which featured several fights and several game misconducts handed out to brawling players. Receiving game misconducts for the Bruins were Garret

Brisebois, Trey Mason, Nicky Leeder, Connor Manegre, Shayne Pluto and Jordan Robertson. Tyler Fyfe opened up the scoring at 12:49 of the first period, assisted by Logan Casavant and Bryson Yee. The Braves responded a short time later with a short-handed marker from Garrett Graham. The Bruins regained the lead with 27 seconds left in the first with a power play marker from Yee (assisted by Mason and goalie Anthony Galliart). In between the fights in the second period the Bruins scored two more goals, by Leeder and Savaia with his first, to go up by a commanding 4-1 lead. The teams exchanged goals in the third with Austin Breen and Kyle Don-

aldson scoring for Spokane, while Savaia picked up his second and third goals for Grand Forks to secure the win. The Bruins are back on home ice this Saturday with a game against the high octane Kimberley Dynamiters. The Nitros lead the Eddie Mountain division and the entire KIJHL with a 28-win, 4-loss, 4-overtime loss record for 60 points. There high-scoring line-up features four of the top 10 scorers in the league with Jared March (50 points/2nd), Eric Buckley (50 points/2nd), Jason Richter (49 points/5th) and Jordan Busch (49 points/5th). On Sunday, Grand Forks travels to Castlegar to play the second place Rebels.

Pick a worthy resolution and stick to it Make a resolution Resolutions are made to commit to positive changes in our own and other’s lives. Each January, many of us resolve to better ourselves in some way. A few of us actually make good on those resolutions. While about 75 per cent of people stick to their goals for at least a week, less than half (46 per cent) are still on target six months later.

this was from a study done back in 2002. It’s hard to keep up the enthusiasm months after you’ve swept up the confetti, GRAND FORKS but it’s not imposRECREATION sible. What is the Phoenix Foundation? Philanthropy? Whoa! That’s a big word. Is philanthropy a disease? Is there a cure? If I told you philanthropy is simply thinking about what CAUSE is close to your heart, and then putting some of your MONEY to WORK so that THINGS GET BETTER in that area— would you say “Yeah, I get it”? The Phoenix Foundation of the Boundary Communities exists to do exactly what I’ve described. We are NOT the ski hill. We receive donations from all sorts of people (like you). And local businesses like Unifab, Interfor and Roxul. And registered charities: small ones like Boundary Women’s Coalition, Grand Forks Art Gallery and bigger ones like the Vancouver Foundation. And other organizations like the USCC, the Rotary Club of

Jane Chernoff Jane Chernoff was born into the family of Jim and Annie Kurnoff on July 15, 1923 in Grand Forks, B.C. She was the oldest of 3 children and the only girl. Throughout her 92 years Jane was devoted to family. She attended public school for a short while but much of her lessons were focused on developing life skills. These she learned from the Doukhobor village way of life that she was a part of. In her early 20’s, at what is now the Station Pub, Jane met Nick Chernoff and their attraction for each other was unmistakable. They married on February 2, 1945, and together they bought a piece of land closer to town and began the process of building a home. In 1949, Nick and Jane were blessed with their first child, a daughter, Debbie. Jim was next in 1952 and in 1955 Walter was born and the family was complete. Throughout those early years as a family, Jane was a very active mother. She taught by example. What she wanted her children to value, she valued herself. She treated people the same way she wanted to be treated by others. She was a woman of many talents but most of all she was a mother who showed her children every day that her family mattered more to her than anything else in the world. In 1968 Jane lost her beloved husband of only 23 years to a workplace accident. Choosing not to remarry, but rather to focus on the needs of her children, Jane adjusted and found contentment helping her children in any way she could. Over the years she helped marry off her sons (as her daughter was already married). She became a supportive grandmother and used the skills she learned as a young girl to keep everyone’s hands warm with knitted mittens, everyone’s taste buds satisfied with her delicious tradition Doukhobor dishes and her regular visits were always welcomed by her children and their families. The house that Jane and Nick had built continued to be her home for many years. She kept an immaculate garden, cut the grass, occasionally let her children help with splitting some wood or trimming a hedge but for the most part she lived a simple life enjoying simple pleasures along the way. As her body began to show signs of age, she realized that she would have to adjust again. After selling the house, she moved into the Boundary Lodge where she developed new relationships with the staff and residents. Her last few years were spent in Hardy View Lodge at the Rezansoff Manner. She expressed her appreciation for the occasional visits from family and friends although her memories of people and events became increasingly faded. During her lifetime Jane said goodbye to many family members and friends as they passed on. Her parents, her grandparents, both of her brothers, a niece, numerous aunts and uncles, cousins and many friends and acquaintances all predeceased her. The loved ones she leaves behind include her daughter Debbie (and Harry) Argatoff, her son Jim (and Marg) Chernoff and her son Walter (and Katie) Chernoff as well as numerous grand children and great grandchildren. Her memories will always be treasured. A funeral service was held on Sunday, January 3, 2016 in the Chapel of the Grand Forks Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Baker Family of Grand Forks.

Sunny Day Continued from page 11

Lance is the son of Canadian Country Gospel Hall of Famer Ed King. Please call your local radio station and request brand new sunny day. Then go to Lance’s Facebook page to let us know in the comments which station played Brand New Sunny Day. Only verified plays will count, so be sure to let us know which stations to contact for verification.

Here is a link to the song on Lance’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ lanceking.musicman/videos/747959712 001397/?pnref=story. In addition to challenging Canadians across the country to request his song, Lance is challenging fellow Rotarians to meet his donation goal of $500 to create a Brand New Sunny Day for children with

special needs. Specific ways the money will be spent are detailed on Gofundme. To donate to the Options of the Heart crowdfunding campaign please go to https://www.gofundme.com/vjwads. The Options of the Heart aims to raise $29,000 to fund a public awareness campaign about adoption for special needs children.
