Kimberley Refugee Resettlement Group moving forward C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

Representatives of the Kimberley Refugee Resettlement Group — Graham Smith and Colin Mackenzie — visited the Kimberley Rotary Club on Wednesday to provide an update on their efforts to bring two refugee families to Kimberley. The KRRG was formed in November of 2015 to represent Kimberley in support of the growing crisis in Syria. It is estimated about four million Syrians are outside their own country, mainly in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, and eight million are displaced within Syria. Half of these refugees are children. Smith says that it isn’t likely that any family

would arrive before the second quarter of this year. These things take time, and there is much to be done beforehand. That work includes finding housing, and furnishing those homes. The families will be arriving with little more than a suitcase and will therefore need everything set up for them. This means fundraising. Smith says that bringing in two families means about $54,000 must be in place. About $20,000 of that will come from the government of Canada. The rest must be raised, either through donation or in-kind. The KRRG has been divided into teams; resettlement planning, fundraising, finance and communications. See Page 3

Five homes evacuated due to gas line break C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin editor

Five homes were evacuated in Kimberley on Wednesday night after a gas leak, the Kimberley Fire Department reports. Assistant Chief Rick Prasad says that the situation began at

1:40 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon when a gas service line was broken in Lower Blarchmont during an excavation. “Twelve homes lost power and gas,” Prasad said. “Gas was turned off because of the potential for it to migrate into homes. A few people spent the night out.”

In total five homes could be considered to have been evacuated, though no formal reception centre was set up. “Kimberley is pretty great that way,” Prasad said. “Everyone knows everyone and wants to help out. People just went to friends’ houses.” The Kimberley Fire Depart-

ment left the scene at about 11 p.m. and the gas crews were on the scene until the early hours of the morning.

y the late 1950s it was very clear that the old city jail, in use from 1911 in the basement of city hall was entirely inadequate. Actually, it was very clear much earlier than that but it was during the late 1950s that city council sought to seriously seek a solution. The city hall jail, when first constructed, was certainly an improvement on the previous ramshackle city lockups. Cranbrook had its own small city police force and both the officers and the criminal element seemed of co-

exist in the city hall jail space with some ease. The B.C. Provincial Police took over from the city police force in 1931, during a time of a worrying degree in the increase of Cranbrook lawlessness. Not everyone was happy with the change but it occurred nonetheless. Over the next two decades both the town and the police force grew but the headquarters and jail did not. The B.C. Provincial Police force was officially disbanded in 1950, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police moved into town during August of that year. In truth, the RCMP had maintained a presence in the city for years previously, with the stationing of district officers in local residential barracks. By 1953 the local detachment comprised five men in very cramped office quarters and prisoners bunked two to each small cell. The solution was obvious: a new building was required. January, 1959, saw

seems to have been the case. In April, the council submitted building design suggestions to Nelson architect David Fairbanks, who, in turn, submitted a sketch to council in January, 1960, at an estimated construction cost of $100,000. A committee of Mayor Sang, Aldermen J. Ward and S. McCleary formed to deal with the matter. The cost estimate rose to just under $118,000 within two weeks which included all mechanical trades, light fixtures, the (politically correct) “prisoner accommodations” and professional fees but not furnishings, equipment, landscaping and necessary bylaw expenses. A final figure of $124,000 went before the populace in April, 1960, and was approved by a vote of 405 to 66. Local contractor A.E. Jones made a successful bid for the construction rights and worked throughout the winter and spring to complete

the building and the police and magistrate moved into their spacious new headquarters on May 18, 1961. The RCMP Administrative Building officially opened on May 27, with 200 citizens given guided tours by scarlet-clad Mounties and city aldermen. The parking lot to the rear and landscaping was still under construction. Later expansions to the north replaced a residence and the Doctor Green Clinic (now the parking lot next to the Studio). It was a solid structure, to say the least, framed in long steel span joists over a concrete foundation with suspended floors and a roof of concrete poured over a galvanized steel form with five-ply tar and gravel laid over two inches of rigid insulation and vapour seal. Owned by the city of Cranbrook, of the 7,040 total sq. ft., 2,232 sq. ft. was leased to the RCMP, including offices, 16 jail cells (featuring cell bars

from Oakalla prison), a “drunk tank”, washrooms, staff kitchen, matron’s room, a guard room, an interview room, a radio room, a records office and a maximum security space. A court room, witness room and magistrate’s office completed the layout. The main floors were covered in vinyl and vinyl asbestos tile with each room independently heated by steam from the city’s main heating plant to the rear of the fire hall. Local sub-contractors included Patmore Plumbing and Heating, Modern Electric, J. Romich Drywall and Fred Cawte painting. By June it was apparent that there were some minor flaws that needed touching up: lighting in the cell blocks, reinforcing of railings, air-ciruclation problems, windows that wouldn’t open, furniture casters damaging the floors, improper drainage in the women’s cell block and a very noisy courtroom. In true 1960s fashion, the building, when complete, looked like a brick box with some unique steel bar exterior ornamental elements clinging to the windows that, if nothing else, said “We’ve got an institution here, boys,” and gave the façade a rather foreboding appearance, which may well have been the point. Further brick box additions over the years with additional steel bars draped around the windows have done little to change the original scheme. On the other hand, over the years the “non-decorative” steel bars within the building seem to have done the trick quite nicely. Cranbrook Commit to learning about dementia looking at three percent hotel tax For the Bulle tin

Local accommodations get behind new hotel tax Arne Petryshen Cranbrook Daily Townsman

Visitors staying in Cranbrook hotels could soon be paying three per cent more for their room. At Monday night’s City Council meeting, the Cranbrook & Region Tourism Society was seeking support for the additional hotel tax in order to help fund its work as the new Destination Marketing Organization (DMO). The application is under the province’s Municipal and Regional Tax Program. City staff estimated that the three per cent tax will generate somewhere around $450,000 annually in support of the DMO business plan and marketing efforts. Council approved the recommendation and put its support behind the application, and a letter of support

will be prepared to be signed by Mayor Lee Pratt on behalf of council. City staff noted in the report for council that the provincial tax program is intended to significantly enhance funds available for such efforts through the additional hotel tax, and not to defray current investments in local tourism destination marketing. By supporting the application the city has committed to maintaining its current level of funding for tourism marketing of $30,000 a year over the five-year term that the Municipal and Regional Tax Program will apply. The Destination Marketing Organization was established by the City of Cranbrook and the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce as an industry-led, notfor-profit society. It was officially registered on Aug. 7, 2015. At a meeting of the new DMO board in November, they decided to pursue the additional hotel tax. In order to apply to the Municipal and Regional Tax Program,

Two vehicle collision sends two to hospital For the Bulletin

Cranbrook RCMP responded to five motor vehicle accidents during the course of the day on January 5th, the most serious being a head on collision involving two vehicles. At approximately 450 pm Cranbrook RCMP were called to a motor vehicle accident at the Off Ramp to Highway 95A. A Chevy Tracker heading Northbound lost control on the slippery highways and careened head on into a southbound pickup

truck. Both occupants of the Tracker were taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The occupants of the pickup truck were not injured. the board must show they have support of the accommodation sector for the tax. They need at least 51 per cent of the number of establishments that would collect the tax within the municipality representing 51 per cent of the total number of rooms. Following that meeting, board directors canvased the local accommodation sector and, as of Dec. 22, have signed support from 10 of the 18 accommodation establishments that the tax levy would apply to. Those 10 establishments make up 65.6 per cent of the rooms in town, with 581, out of a total of 885 rooms. The establishments that have so far signed support : Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort, Best Western Inn Cranbrook, Days Inn Cranbrook, Heritage Inn, Kootenay Country Inn, Hospitality Courtyard Inn, Nomad Motel, The Baker Hotel, Elizabeth Lake Lodge and Heritage Estate Motel.

Many Kimberley residents are this month making one of their most important New Year’s resolutions ever. They’re becoming Dementia Friends, committing to learning a little bit about dementia so they can be supportive and inclusive toward people with the illness, which has become one of the country’s most pressing health issues. Statistics suggest three out of four area residents know someone living with dementia. “People affected by dementia continue to live in and be a part of our communities, and we can support them to stay connected in ways that are meaningful for them,” says Julie Cameron, First Link Helpline Coordinator for the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. for the East Kootenay

region. “Through individual actions we can raise awareness of dementia and reduce the stigma attached to it.” The Dementia Friend campaign is the cornerstone of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, which runs until the end of January. Becoming a Dementia Friend is easy, says Cameron. The process starts by signing up at DementiaFriends.ca. The next step is to understand five simple things about dementia: * It is not a natural part of aging. * It is not just about losing your memory. Dementia can affect thinking, communicating and doing everyday activities. * It is possible to live well with dementia. * There is more to a person than a diagnosis of dementia.

* The Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s East Kootenay branch is here to help people with dementia and their care partners. That knowledge can easily translate into action at home and work, Cameron adds. The Society has supported people living with dementia for 35 years. One of its initiatives, First Link®, connects people affected by dementia with information, wSociety support services and programs such as Minds in Motion®, and dementia education sessions at any stage of the journey. Kimberley residents can get more information by contacting the First Link® Dementia Helpline toll-free at 1-800936-6033 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents can also contact Julie Cameron at jcameron@alzheimerbc.org and visit www.alzheimerbc.org.

Poland: Backsliding Furiously

L

ech Walesa, a national hero 26 years ago for his role in ending Communist rule in Poland as the leader of Solidarity, has little political power in the country today, but he still has his voice. Last week he raised it, to condemn the new Polish government that emerged from last October’s election. “This government acts against Poland, against our achievements, freedom, democracy, not to mention the fact that it makes us look ridiculous to the rest of the world,” Walesa said. “I’m ashamed to travel abroad.” Walesa said this on privately-owned Radio Zet, because Polish public service television and radio will no longer invite him to speak on any of their channels. The new government sees him as an enemy, and it now controls public broadcasting completely: all four channels of TVP and the 200 stations of Polskie Radio. It took them over in an operation that the European Parliament’s president, Martin Schultz, described as having the “characteristics of a coup.” First the new Law and Justice Party (PiS) government packed the constitutional tribunal that might have stopped the media takeover, swearing in five new PiS appointees in the middle of the night. And then it used its parliamentary majority to bring the public service media under party control. The new Polish Culture Minister, Piotr Glinski, explained that it was necessary to “re-Polonise” Polish society — i.e. cleanse it of all the decadent Western European liberal notions and values that had infected it under the rule of the outgoing Civic Platform government — and that the public broadcasters would therefore be re-designated as “national cultural institutes.” The head of PiS’s parliamentary caucus, Ryszard Terlecki, was even franker: “Over the past few weeks … we have had to deal

with the extremely unreliable work of the public media,” he said, referring to the media coverage of popular protests against the PiS’s attack on the constitutional tribunal. “If the media criticises our changes … we have to stop it.” The PiS is the creation of Jaroslaw Kaczynski and his late twin brother Lech, who died in a plane crash at Smolensk in Russia in 2010. The brothers have always had a close political relationship with the Catholic Church in Poland, and the PiS largely owes its recent electoral victory to the support of Poland’s very conservative Catholic bishops. Gwynne But it wasn’t all that sweeping a victory, really. Dyer The PiS got just over half the seats in the Sejm (parliament), which technically allows it to do almost anything it wants now that the constitutional tribunal has been crippled. But it won those seats on only 37 percent of the popular vote — and now that it has begun to put its agenda into action, recent opinion polls are giving it only 24 percent support. That doesn’t bother Jaroslaw Kaczynski in the slightest. He has the same knack as Donald Trump for saying nasty, untrue things and making them sound bold and incisive (to his target audience, at least) rather than just stupid and slimy. For example, he recently warned Poles that Syrian refugees would bring diseases and parasites into the country. He continues to speculate publicly that the crash that killed his twin brother was a plot (presumably a Russian plot), despite the fact that two official Polish investigations have concluded that the cause of the crash was pilot error. Even the poor, left-behind Poles who are Kaczynski’s target voters are sometimes alarmed by his anger and his extremism, so he wisely decided to let anoth-

er, virtually unknown party member, Andrzej Duda, run for the presidency last year. Duda won, so Kaczynski repeated the strategy in October, promoting another relatively obscure and unthreatening party member, Beata Szydlo, as prime minister after the PiS’s victory in the parliamentary election. But most people suspect that he will quickly tire of working from the shadows and take her place as prime minister himself. What has brought this deeply unattractive politician to power in Poland? It’s largely the same factors that have made Donald Trump a political phenomenon in the United States: an economy that is doing quite well overall — Poland’s economy grew by a third under Civic Platform in the past six years — but that has left a large chunk of the population behind. It’s even the same chunk of the population that backs Trump in the US: older, more religious, less well educated, living in smaller cities and rural areas. Kaczynski’s victory therefore depends on a very narrow and fragile base, and he may well become more and more radical in his struggle to hold it together. It is therefore going to be quite exciting in Poland for a while, and probably quite embarrassing for people like Lech Walesa. But it isn’t an anti-democratic revolution with real staying power. Poles overwhelmingly want to remain part of NATO and the European Union, if only (in some cases) because they still fear Russia so much. You cannot go far down the road Kaczynski wants to travel without coming into serious conflict with the EU’s laws protecting civil and human rights – and when Poles have to choose between the EU and Kaczynski, they will not back Kaczynski. Only an hour immediately caught their attention: the long, the play was broadcast live on the 1957 film ‘Zero Hour!’ With no visuals, the evening of April 3rd, 1956. Two million dialogue sounded hilarious to the trio,

who decided that this material could make a successful comedy film. To make their own screenplay work, the trio needed to lift the characters and dialogue verbatim from ‘Zero Hour!,’ so they purchased the rights to that film from Paramount. What was serious and dramatic in 1958 was unintentionally hilarious in 1980, including that famous exclamation mark after the title. But before ‘Airplane!’ opened to sold out theatres, another version of Hailey’s original story appeared. Two kids in the eighth grade had used their parents’ Super 8 camera to film their own version of ‘Terror in the Sky.’ This is only notable as the year before they had filmed their own version of ‘Jaws,’ which ended up being a film festival favourite. The story of Ted Striker and a plane full of food poisoning may have reached its largest audience with ‘Airplane!,’ but it also ended there too. No one could ever take this scenario serious again, not without visions of Leslie Nielsen saying “and don’t call me Shirley.” Arthur Hailey, the creator of these myriad productions, was spotted exiting a theatre with a huge grin on his face. He told reporters (who incorrectly but understandably thought ‘Airplane!’ was spoofing his book ‘Airport.’ Right author, wrong book) “I laughed like everyone else.” Mike Selby is Reference Librarian at the Cranbrook Public Library

Dementia-friendly actions Here are some tips to help you when you are connecting with a person living with dementia: • Patience is key for dementia-friendliness. • Use respectful language. People living with dementia are not “sufferers” or “patients.” • Address the person with dementia, rather than those around them, when talking about their experience living with the disease. • Connect, don’t correct. Respond to feelings being shared. • Use precise language when describing actions or tasks. • Give directions slowly and clearly. • Focus on a person’s strengths and share tasks with them, like washing dishes or helping them to order at a coffee shop or restaurant. • Become educated on dementia and on how to help, by visiting www.alzheimerbc.org. The Dementia Friend campaign is the cornerstone of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, which runs until the end of January. Becoming a Dementia Friend is easy, says Cameron. The process starts by signing up at DementiaFriends.ca. The

next step is to understand five simple things about dementia: • It is not a natural part of aging. • It is not just about losing your memory. Dementia can affect thinking, communicating and doing everyday activities.

Letters to the Editor

• It is possible to live well with dementia. • There is more to a person than a diagnosis of dementia. • The Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s East Kootenay branch is here to help people with dementia and their care partners. That knowledge can easily translate into action at home and work, Cameron adds. The Society has supported people living with dementia for 35 years. One of its initiatives, First Link, connects people affected by dementia with information, Society support services and programs such as Minds in Motion, and dementia education sessions at any stage of the journey. Cranbrook residents can get more information by contacting the First Link Dementia Helpline toll-free at 1-800-9366033 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents can also contact Julie Cameron at jcameron@alzheimerbc.org and visit www.alzheimerbc. org.

Ice face life after Luke

Following trade of captain, life goes on for Kootenay Ice with Regina Pats in town Friday Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

While the Kootenay Ice had been without the on-ice services of captain Luke Philp since Nov. 21, the 20-year-old was still around and now that he’s gone, a true and complete void exists. “Luke, even though he wasn’t in our lineup, he was always around,” said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Kootenay Ice. “He’s a leader, whether he’s dressed in your lineup or not. “This now really opens the door for guys. We’ve seen improvements in that from Matt Alfaro and Zak Zborosky. But we’ve got Tanner [Lishchynsky] and Hof [Wyatt Hoflin] here still that are a big part and were big parts of it from the beginning. “We’ll go about naming a captain next week. I’m pretty sure, in my mind, who that’s going to be, but we’ll get some more input from some of our players.” Philp, of course, was shipped off to the Red Deer Rebels Sunday morning in a blockbuster deal that brought a handful of assets to a rebuilding Ice franchise. Zborosky, who has been sporting an alternate captain’s letter on his sweater, is certainly a candidate and when asked who needs to step

pitch in to fill that role and we should be okay.” In their first outing without their captain, Zborosky and the Ice skated to a 3-1 win over the Swift Current Broncos this past Sunday. With Zborosky’s hometown Regina Pats (17-17-3-3) visiting Cranbrook Friday, the hope is to build off a twogame Saskatchewan road trip that saw the Ice (7-31-3-0) claim three of a possible four points. “This is only the second time playing them this year, so we don’t know much about them,” Zborosky said. “But they have a few guys that can score. We’ve got to shut down those guys and we’ve

We want to play the same way we played in Moose Jaw [4-3 OT loss Satur-

day], and to a lesser extent, maybe in Swift Current-- a real uptempo and competing. “We’re not spending a ton of time focused on our opponent. It sounds funny because it’s January and that’s usually when you start to dial into that stuff. But with new players, healthy bodies coming back -guys that hadn’t been in our lineup for a while -we’re still really focused on ourselves and making some subtle changes.” Puck drop between the Ice and Pats is slated for 7 p.m. Friday at Western Financial Place.

Pouliot ready for opportunity with young Ice Kootenay newcomer excited for chance to take on bigger role in Cranbrook

Taylor Rocc a

With a big grin, 17-year-old Ryan Pouliot emerges from the Kootenay Ice dressing room. Having come to Cranbrook via the Luke Philp blockbuster deal with the Red Deer Rebels, the native of North Vancouver is looking forward to a fresh start and the opportunity to build some special with his new team. “I was excited -- this team is in a rebuild right now and I’m a younger guy,” Pouliot said prior to practice Thursday at Western Financial Place. “They told me, ‘You’re going to get more opportunity here than in Red Deer.’” The opportunity will

be there if the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Pouliot is willing to work for it and based on what he had to say Thursday, that shouldn’t be an issue. “It’s pretty early to tell where exactly he will fit in with our group but he seems like a great kid, very respectful,” said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Kootenay Ice. “He’s going to get an opportunity to play. He’ll play [Friday] night for sure and between him, Jason Wenzel and Dallas Hines, it’s an opportunity for someone in that group to really step up and take the bull by the horns, so to speak. “I think he’s excited just to get a chance to

play.” A former 11th-round selection (228th overall) of the Saskatoon Blades at the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft, Pouliot is in his rookie campaign, having skated in 14 games with the Rebels prior to being traded to the Ice. While a change of scenery can be refreshing, Pouliot elicited a good chuckle from members of the media when he talked about the adversity he’s faced in making the move to the East Kootenay. “The biggest challenge is probably the snow,” Pouliot said with a laugh, showing off his electric smile again. The East Kootenay is

up with the former captain no longer in the fold, the first finger he pointed was at himself. “It’s a big impact. Luke [Philp] was our best player and our captain,” Zborosky said Thursday. “To see a guy go like that, it’s never easy. But we’ve got to move on from that. That’s how it works. It’s a business. We kind of thought it was going to happen, so we kind of prepared for it. “I have to step up and guys like Alf and Lish, they have to step up, too. Even second-year guys, they can say a lot of things in the dressing room. But we’re going to miss [Philp]. He’s a fantastic leader. Everyone can

under heavy snowfall warning with 10 to 15 centimetres expected to hit the area over the course of the next 24 hours, but at least Pouliot made it to town before the storm rolled in so he could meet his new teammates and prepare for Friday’s tilt with the Regina Pats. “Coming to a new team, you’ve got to meet everyone and it’s a little harder to adjust,” Pouliot said. “But this team has been really good, it’s been easy to adjust.” With the Regina Pats visiting Cranbrook Friday night, Regina native and alternate captain Zak Zborosky made note of the arrival of Pouliot.

“He’s been fitting in fine, I see him around the dressing room talking with guys and joking around,” Zborosky said. “He seems pretty calm on the ice. He doesn’t seem too nervous out there. I think he’s going to fit in fine. “You just let him know that everyone’s his friend and we’re going to welcome him.” The true welcome will come Friday when Pouliot, who is expected to don sweater No. 7, steps onto the ice for the first time as a member of his new club. Puck drop between the Ice and Pats is slated for 7 p.m. Friday at Western Financial Place.

For the second time this season, the Kootenay Ice have been burned by a player refusing to report to Cranbrook. Riley Whittingham, 20, acquired from the Spokane Chiefs Monday morning in a deal that sent 20-year-old Presten Kopeck south of the border, is not expected to report to the Kootenay Ice after initially indicating he was excited for the opportunity. “He has decided not to come [to Cranbrook] and he’s looking at all his options right now,” said Jeff Chynoweth, president and general manager of the Kootenay Ice, Thursday afternoon. “It doesn’t look like the Kootenay Ice or the Western Hockey League is an option at this present time.” Whittingham was acquired from the Chiefs along with a fourthround pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft. According to Chynoweth, Whittingham’s refusal to report will not impact the trade with Spokane, as there was protection written into the deal to cover circumstance such as this. “When I talked to Riley on Monday, he was excited about coming and getting an opportunity for a more expanded role with our hockey club,” Chynoweth said. “But as the day progressed and the week progressed, he’s had second thoughts. He is contemplating his future right now and looking at all options.” In 34 games this season with the Chiefs, Whittingham posted eight goals and 18 points. Over 228 career WHL games, all with Spokane, the 6-foot-2, 196-pound forward has registered 46 goals and 95 points. “I’m not going to lose much sleep over it,” said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Kootenay Ice. “I’m not really concerned with it. If [Whittingham] ends up, at some point, deciding to come, he’ll help us with our depth up front. If he’s not here, which is my feeling that he won’t be, it just gives the current group we have more opportunity

and more ice time. “We’re focusing on trying to develop our young players and give them a chance to play. Having a 20-year-old here for a couple months really doesn’t help our project. It’s a win-win either way, in my opinion.” Should status quo remain, this leaves the Kootenay Ice carrying 22 players -- 13 forwards, seven defencemen and two goaltenders -- heading into Sunday’s WHL trade deadline. “I wasn’t counting on this and we’re at that magic number right now with 22 players,” Chynoweth said. “We’re going to continue to look right up until noon Sunday. If we can better our hockey club, we’ll definitely look at it.” Whittingham’s refusal to report to the Kootenay Ice is not a new challenge for Chynoweth. Back on Nov. 26, Chynoweth brokered a deal to bring 18-year-old forward Johnny Wesley to Cranbrook from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft. After confirming Wesley’s willingness to report to the Ice, the deal was rubber-stamped and officially processed by the league. Before the day ended, Wesley had reconsidered his situation and informed Chynoweth he was not going to report. The deal was nullified by the WHL and Wesley, a native of Surrey, B.C., remained property of the Hurricanes only to be dealt Nov. 30 to the Vancouver Giants for an eighth-round pick in 2018 WHL Bantam Draft. The Kootenay Ice (731-3-0) will move on without the services of Whittingham as they host the Regina Pats (1717-3-3) Friday night (7 p.m.) at Western Financial Place.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Emphasize work and those in charge. You might feel a bit like a kid, as you’ll need to answer to others. Say yes, because there’s really no alternative. Pull back some. Be willing to assess these situations and make a decision accordingly. Tonight: A must appearance. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Reach out to someone who can help you sort through a situation. Not only is this person’s viewpoint very different, but his or her way of handling a problem is as well. If you are comfortable with this new perspective, try to work with it. Tonight: Try a new spot. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Deal with someone directly, and you will get better results. The ball might not be in your court, but there is no reason to think that you can’t deal with what is happening. You’ll come through at the last minute because you can discipline your mind. Tonight: Do the unusual.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You understand feeling out of control, as you experience frequent mood changes. You will discover how important it is to change directions and move past a self-imposed restriction. Someone else demands control, so let him or her have it. Tonight: Go along for the ride. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You could be in the middle of a controversy and wish you weren’t. Go about your business, and refuse to get involved in an overassertive conversation. Passions run high, even at home. Maintain a sense of humor, smile and allow others to let off steam. Tonight: Call it early. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Communication remains off when dealing with a child or family member. Try as you may, this person can’t seem to understand your message. Resist judging him or her. Give up being so critical, and try to walk in this person’s shoes. Tonight: Let off some steam. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Tundra

Tension is high, and you might misread someone’s gesture. You can’t be sure enough of yourself right now. Try not to take any statement or misunderstanding personally. Get to the bottom of a problem through a non-defensive approach. Tonight: Play it easy, but curb spending. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You will pound on someone’s door in attempt to get his or her attention. When you want contact, you won’t rest until you have it. Your ability to come to terms with a problem needs to emerge. Consider pulling back some. Tonight: Hang out with a friend or loved one. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Balance your checkbook before you walk out the door. You need that security more than you realize. Someone might make an offer, which, for some reason, could anger you. Rather than respond quickly, pull back and think. Tonight: Treat a friend to dinner and a movie. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You might feel unusually energized, as the New Moon is in

your sign. You radiate a certain amount of magic, which attracts others. Avoid a quarrel by using your magnetism. Do not underestimate your people skills. Tonight: Wherever you are is where others want to be. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You might feel burdened, tired or simply not in the mood to hear a lot of comments and demands coming from others. If you can take the day off from the constant grind, you will be able to recharge your batteries. Tonight: Take some much-needed personal time. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Keep in mind your expectations and where you are heading. You can do only so much, but today you have a better chance of achieving more of what you desire. Keep that fact in mind, even if you get into a squabble with someone at a distance. Tonight: Where the crowds are. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My wife and I have been married for a long time. In the last couple of years, she has developed an incontinence problem. She seems not to be aware of how bad it is. She leaves rather fragrant underwear in the hamper, and the odor is horrible. If I bring up the subject, she gets very angry. She is in denial. I wish I could suggest to her what her options are, what products are available for this problem and to wash her underwear more thoroughly. The odor is so strong, guests coming into the house can smell it. Maybe she simply can’t tell how bad it is. What do you suggest I do? What do you suggest she do? This is a fairly urgent matter. Thank you. -- Embarrassed Dear Embarrassed: Your wife might be surprised to learn that incontinence affects more than 25 million people in the U.S., and most cases are treatable. There are different types of incontinence: Stress incontinence (leaking when you cough, sneeze, laugh); urge incontinence (a sudden need to use the bathroom, usually due to other conditions, such as an infection); overflow incontinence (the bladder doesn’t completely empty when you use the toilet); functional incontinence (wherein a physical or mental impairment creates a problem, such as severe arthritis that makes it difficult to unzip fast enough); or mixed incontinence (more than one type). We know this is a sensitive subject, but you absolutely must speak to your wife about it. She would be mortified to realize that others notice the odor. She might be more willing to address it with her doctor if you tell her that incontinence can indicate a more serious underlying medical condition. And she might be reassured to know that she might be able to control the problem through medication and/ or pelvic exercises. For information, you both can contact the National Association for Continence at nafc.org Dear Annie: My wife and I are elderly and no longer enjoy things like fancy candies and fruit. We have tried to subtly let family and friends know this, but they persist, on frequent occasions, in sending us expensive edibles from elegant places, which we then regift to others. (This isn’t easy, as most of our friends are also elderly and won’t enjoy the epicurean treats.) We feel that, to be polite, we must thank the givers. But the truth is, we would much prefer that they use the money to make a donation to charity. Is there a polite way for us to tell them this without appearing to be rude and ungrateful? -- Anonymous Dear Anonymous: We suspect these people are trying to be kind and don’t know what else to get you. You must thank them for thinking of you. But when an occasion is coming up where you know they are likely to send you such things, inform them in advance that you no longer eat candy or fancy fruits. Say that you are making a concerted effort to do more good in your lives, and if they insist on honoring you, a gift to such-and-such charity would mean the world to you. YOUR AD in the BULLETIN has staying power. has selling power!

With so many advertising mediums dividing the attention of potential customers, newspapers remain the most effective source for reaching consumers. Why? Simply put, newspapers reach more people, more often. Highly portable and highly visible, newspaper ads go with people and stay with them. That means your business is more likely to be on their minds when they’re in the market for related products or services. When it comes to spending your advertising dollars, make the choice that’s tried and true: newspaper advertising works harder for you.
