Cleaner water on tap

Nanaimo residents can look forward to fewer, if any, boil water advisories from the city. Last week, the city hosted a tour of its new $71-million South Fork Water Treatment Plant, located several kilometres south of Nanaimo on South Forks Road. Operations began in early December after two years of construction, which was prompted by new Island Health requirements that the city adopt more stringent measures to prevent waterborne illness. The plant has already diverted water boil advisories from turbidity caused by a series of recent strong winter storms, said Bill Sims, city manager of

In the tanks, water is drawn via vacuum through a membrane made up of thousands of hollow tubes that strain out contaminants as small as 0.1 micrometres – about 1/600th the width of a human hair – in diameter.

The plant also relies on gravity to power its filtration system instead of electrically driven pumps, providing savings in operation and maintenance costs. “One of the exciting things about this plant is that normally – when I said we put a vacuum on the membrane tubes to pull the water through – any other membrane plant in Canada uses pumps to do that,” Sims said. “We’re using a siphon, which is just gravity … gravity is free and the price of it isn’t going up anytime soon.” For more information about the plant, please visit http://bit. ly/1PhaV1d.

Concerned Lantzville resident Niels Schwarz, left, and Ted Gullison, right, who are behind an effort to stop logging at Woodlot 1475, stand in a section of the forest just off Sywash Ridge Road with Lantzville mayor Colin Haime, second left, and Coun. By Tamara Cunningham The News bulleTiN

A push to protect a Lantzville forest is ramping up, with organizers arguing there’s atrisk species and high recreational value. “Can you imagine if Stanley Park was being logged?” asked Ted Gullison, biologist and concerned resident behind the Save Lantzville Forest effort. “It wouldn’t really matter if they were doing responsible logging, it just doesn’t make any sense. “It’s the same thing here.” Woodlot 1475 is at the heart of the fight, an approximate 256-hectare swath in upper Lantzville that’s 96 per cent Crown land. Save Lantzville Forest campaigners are petitioning to change the designation of the woodlot from a timber production forest to permanently protected area, on the condition the woodlot licensee is compensated, possibly with a swap in timber rights on other Crown land, if government allows third parties to purchase and retire the tenure of the woodlot. Gullison said more than 2,000 signatures have been collected so far. There’s also political support from Lantzville council and Nanaimo MLA Leonard Krog, The Season of Giving

Nov 20–Jan 2 See it Experience it

who supports protecting the woodlot as long as the current operator is compensated. The woodlot, which can be accessed off of Sywash Ridge Road, is a maze of bridges and trails and home to three amphibian species considered at risk by the province, including the red-legged frog, a citizen-commissioned report by E. Wind Consulting shows. Other provincially listed species like the western screech owl have also been noted in the area and the province reports that 25 per cent of the woodlot is coastal Douglas fir, which it considers an ecosystem at risk. Woodlot guidelines, however, are not specific to operating in an endangered forest, says Gullison, who along with resident Niels Schwarz points to the area’s high recreational and environmental values. An end to logging would allow the area to be managed for recreation and the mature forest to get older, which is better for biodiversity and a higher-quality recreation experience, Gullison said. But there’s no easy solution, according to Michelle Stilwell, Parksville-Qualicum MLA, who notes two sides including licence-holder John Gregson. “The important thing we have to understand is as much as Save Lantzville Forest wants to see it protected, there are also those individuals who don’t oppose the woodlot and it’s important to acknowledge the Gregsons have a backing

by many of their neighbours,” said Stilwell who says she wants to make sure both sides have equal voice. She also said it’s a working forest and it’s a myth that it is being clearcut or that people will lose trail access. Lantzville council met with Stilwell and B.C. Forests Minister Steve Thomson in November, and Stilwell said it was asked whether the ministry would consider cancelling the requirement to remove timber if the woodlot licence was acquired by the community but “that’s not something within the minister’s abilities because the purpose of the woodlot is to manage and harvest timber as well as manage for the other values as well.” She sees the ability to turn the woodlot into protected area as being between woodlot-licence holder and Save Lantzville Forest and that the group should make an offer. Government also has to know what’s on the table. Gullison asks if the forestry minister can’t cancel the requirement to remove timber, who can? Government is being “way too passive” on this, he said. Gregson has held the licence for 10 years and said his company has been doing a good job of managing it and would like to continue to do so. He’s possibly open to compensation and acquirement of the licence but can’t comment further until there’s a proposal. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Nanaimo hospital sees new CT scanners New state-of-the-art CT scanners are coming to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Island Health announced this week two CT scanners will be coming to NRGH and be ready for patients next spring. The new scanners represent a capital investment of approximately $3.6 million, which will be paid for through contributions from the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation, Nanaimo Regional Hospital District and the province, through Island Health. New automated CNG-powered garbage trucks hinge on Fortis B.C.’s new filling station. Nanaimo city council agreed last week to purchase two CNG-powered automated garbage trucks, on the condition Fortis B.C. guarantees construction of a filling station by the end of the year. Fortis B.C. has partnered with Mid-Island Co-op to build a CNG filling station at a new card lock facility at the corner of Boxwood and Northfield roads, but Fortis B.C. is still waiting to finalize agreements before it can provide guarantees the CNG component will go ahead, according to a city report.

The city isn’t prepared to put the order in to buy CNG trucks without that guarantee by the end of the year. The station would be a good location – already on the route garbage trucks take back to the public works yard – and they have offered the city a better rate, says Bruce Labelle, the city’s fleet and service centre manager, who says the alternative filling station is at the Regional District of Nanaimo bus garbage on Applecross Road. If successful, it will also be the city’s consumption that contributes to the success of building the station and allows others in the community to look at CNG as an option, he said. The trucks themselves also carry benefits. They will would be less noisy than diesel trucks, have fewer fuel costs and mean the city no longer has to deal with maintenance costs and down time

of diesel engine after-treatment systems, Labelle said. Each truck would also reduce emissions by 42 tonnes annually. The cost is more than $55,000 over the city’s $800,000 budget, but Fortis B.C. has agreed to provide a $40,466 grant per truck. The purchasing order has to be made by the end of December, however, when the grant expires and that’s on hold until there’s confirmation the station will go ahead. Labelle said if it doesn’t go ahead, another solution will have to be found because two new garbage trucks are needed. Council voted against the alternative of buying automated diesel trucks. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Dr. Paul Trepanier, radiologist and CT section head at NRGH, said fast rotation time improves image quality and the improved technology will reduce radiation exposure to patients. “Right now, we can perform approximately 70 CTs in a day and that number should further increase with the new technology of two fully capable machines,” he said. Renovations to accommodate the new scanners will begin imminently.

EDITORIAL

Christmas time about tradition It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Tomorrow (Dec. 25), most of us will wake up to stockings filled with presents, candy and cheer. Each household will have its own way of celebrating, be it religious or secular or some combination thereof, and those traditions are what make this holiday so enjoyable. There is something special about Christmas, something that separates it from other occasions on the calendar. It’s something hard to define, yet something we can feel when we file into our church for candlelight service, or when we take a last look at the hearth before bed on Christmas Eve, or when we throw open the curtains on Christmas morning to discover a dusting of snow. They say ’tis the season to be jolly, and we hope that’s the case, and that the holiday is a happy one. The days leading up to Christmas can be a stressful time, as anyone who’s braved the mall parking lots this week can attest. If we’ve been Grinching around lately, well, now’s the time to atone by sharing some smiles. They also say ’tis better to give than to receive, and that’s worth remembering in a few different ways. We’ve given generously to the Loaves and Fishes food bank and the Salvation Army kettles this month and we’ve perhaps overspent with gifts for our family. Still, we should give once more this time of year: give of ourselves. It’s worth remembering, at Christmas time, what’s important, and for most of us, that’s family. The season for giving isn’t necessarily about what we want, it’s about what the family wants. And togetherness and tradition come wrapped up together, and that’s worth celebrating, and it will be worth celebrating next year, and every year. Above all, we’re wishing for happy holidays for all our readers, and a very merry Christmas.

Spending exceeding our country’s means To the Editor,

Well, it is almost two months since Justin Trudeau became our prime minister. While it is obviously too early for political commentators to base observations on that short a period, it is interesting to note that another group of experts, namely the investment community, have clearly been displaying votes of non-confidence in the new government’s policies and performance. On the last day prior to the election, the Canadian dollar traded at US$0.77. As this is written, Canada’s currency has plunged to US$0.72 – a stunning seven per cent against the greenback since J.T. took over. In currency trading, that is a massive move within a short time frame of just two months. The Toronto Stock Exchange Index is hovering very near 13,000 – a drop of more than 800 index points or about six per cent, again a stunning decline. I believe there is a sound reason for this demonstrable skepticism among the investment community. One of the major sources for the Canadian government’s tax revenues has been the petroleum complex – and that industry is contracting at a frightening rate, at least in terms of tax revenues for the

The contraction of the oil and gas industry will leave the federal government short on tax revenues, says letter writer.

government. And yet, despite this sharp decline in revenues, the Trudeau Liberals have been announcing one dramatic spending splurge after another. Where do they think the money is going to come from unless the government plans horrendous levels of new debt to finance the now-certain onrush of deficit spending? The investment community is clearly ruminating about the same question.

Spirit of the season could help existing social problems To the Editor,

Certain religious folk believe their icon was born in a manger, as there was no room at the inn for a homeless couple who came to Bethlehem. Images of that nativity scene are symbolically prominent at this time of year, but real homelessness has reached a crisis point two millennia later. A recent nationwide survey asserts that homelessness is caused by poverty, disability, addiction, mental illness or trauma, and on any given night about 30,000 Canadians sleep in charitable overnight accommodation, or in

domestic violence shelters, or simply try and survive on the streets. Another 50,000 are temporarily staying with friends or family, simply because there is nowhere else to go. Surely, all levels of government need to work together, and think about creating permanent housing instead of the tent cities that have become prevalent in many communities. It would need a concerted effort to acquire disused public properties such as schools and hospitals across the country, then refurbish them into hostels for the homeless.

Ebenezer Scrooge changed his miserly ways, and cooked his Christmas goose in Charles Dickens’s wonderful tale of redemption. Now it’s time for all government agencies to say ‘What’s good for the goose, is good for the gander,’ and put as much focus and resources on homelessness as is put in welcoming Syrian refugees. Canadians will offer help to the homeless, just as they are doing for the refugees; charity begins at home, after all. It’s time to put some Ho! Ho! Ho! into homelessness.

Up to 3,500 Syrian refugees are about to arrive in B.C.. Before the citizens of B.C. start patting themselves on the back over their generosity, they might want to reconsider their priorities in light of this ugly fact: for many years, B.C. has led all other provinces in Canada with the highest percentage of children living under the poverty level.

Committees drafting policies for safe schools By Karl yu The News bUlleTIN

The Nanaimo school district is working toward a safe schools strategy. Bob Esliger, assistant superintendent of diversity and equity, said the district will be circulating an inclusion policy to schools and partner groups. The aim is to have discussions to ensure that the policy reflects the diversity present in the district, said Esliger, adding other work is being done as well. “Concurrently, we have two district committees that are at work and one of those ... sexual orientation gender identity and on that

ABDI, MUSSE study at VIU thanks to committee’s sponsorship.

By Shari BiShop BoweS Nadifo Abdi remembers the long, dark nights she spent studying for national high school exams at home in Kenya’s massive Dadaab refugee camp, where she was born. While her six siblings slumbered, her mother was there at her side with a cup of tea, something to eat, and words of loving encouragement. “She would come stay the night with me as I studied, staying awake so that I would not feel like I was alone,” said Abdi, who is one of two new refugee students at Vancouver Island University this year on scholarships sponsored by VIU’s World University Service of Canada local committee. Abdi had first heard about the WUSC program from Aden Ahmed, the headmaster at her school. Aden had been in the process of applying to WUSC himself at the time, and has since come to VIU to complete his bachelor of business administration. Abdi arrived shortly after Hodan Musse, another WUSC-supported student who left behind a difficult life as a refugee in Jordan to begin studies at VIU. Musse’s family arrived as refugees in Amman, Jordan five years ago. They travelled from Saudi Arabia because her father was ill and needed treatment that could be provided by a United Nations hospital in Amman. Musse’s father died soon after arriving in Jordan, leaving his wife and family of six children with few prospects, as they were unable to work or access education other than English courses provided to refugees. Both young women put their ambitions and dreams behind the difficult path of studies and a competitive application process that could ensure them a chance to attend university in Canada. Musse hopes to enter the faculty of management and become a business professional – one day helping other refugees through employment and greater opportunities. Abdi dreams of a career as a

committee, we are creating procedures for helping schools to address issues regarding student and staff sexual orientation gender identity diversity. “We are writing a procedural guide to help our district accommodate diversity in that respect,” Esliger said. He said the multicultural and race relations committee is tasked with writing the procedural guide for the district to address the needs of cultural and race diversity. The work of the two committees will be focused on safe, caring and inclusive practice and will also address bullying, harass-

ment and intimidation. “We have a three-pronged approach to deal with that and that is that our procedures for addressing issues must be educative, preventative and restorative,” he said. Work from the two committees will go to the learning services department and will make up the procedural guides for schools. The school board will need to give approval for the inclusion policy, said Esliger. The district said the board is expected to discuss the next steps for the strategy during 2016 budget discussions. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Dean came into the shelter with his brother James. Both dogs are very friendly toward people and other dogs. They are excitable and would benefit from a refresher on their manners, such as not jumping up on people. Dean will both do best in a home with active guardians who have a lot of time for exercise and training - he is very intelligent and get bored easily! Typical of the husky breed, they will be likely to escape if left alone outside without supervision. Dean has primarily lived outdoors, so will need to be taught how to live in a house. He is too intense to live with cats or small animals at this time. Small children will likely get knocked over and jumped on, but older kids would be fine with supervision. If you’re looking for a happy, enthusiastic friend to exercise and learn with, ask the staff to meet Dean today! Sugarplum is a confident, adorable puppy. But don’t let her cuteness fool you - this girl is going to be a giant! Sugarplum is primarily Presa Canario X Neapolitan Mastiff. These are both specialized, strong headed breeds and will require a breed experienced home. Puppy classes are a must for this puppy. Sugarplum will need tons of socialization continuously throughout her life so she does not become suspicious of strangers. She would benefit greatly from structured play and conditioning in a daycare setting so she can learn polite dog social skills, and not become a bully. If you have lots of extra room in your home (and too much extra space in your bed) and are keen on investing lots of time and effort into training, ask the staff to meet Sugarplum!

FAMILY CHRISTMAS tale has message of hope and forgiveness. BY RACHEL STERN

mother of a young disabled boy fights desperately to escape their impoverished life for just one chance at a magical holiday for her son. Her desperation leads her to commit a crime against the three kings, or magi, bearing gifts to the newly born saviour. Even though she strays, she eventually receives forgiveness. The tale unfolds in Amahl and the Night Visitors, an opera written by Gian Carlo Menotti, aimed at children. Menotti said the inspiration came from the painting The Adoration of the Magi, by Hieronymus Bosch, which hung at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The main character is the boy Amahl, who walks with a crutch. His mother worries about his future and that he will have to resort to begging to survive. The story explores the relationship between the mother and son and the lengths the mother will go to secure her son’s future. “It’s a really beautiful story. It’s a story of hope and forgiveness,” said Tyler Fitzgerald, who plays King Melchior, one of the three wise men. The cast gathered for a dress rehearsal at Lakeside Gardens Retirement Community Dec. 15. It was the first time the performers sang together. They have been practising their parts in isolation because they hail from across the Island. Between the starts and stops, and guidance from the director, the voices began to meld into a harmonic wave of beauty that settled in the hearts of onlookers.

Donald plays the mother and Nanaimo’s Sharon Wishart provides accompaniment on piano. Fitzgerald, originally from Nanaimo, has performed around the world. The bass-baritone performer has sang alongside

the Edmonton Symphony, Peterborough Singers and Calgary Bach Society. He has played several roles over the years in opera companies in Canada and the United States. Nanaimo’s Jack Mace, 10, plays the part of Amahl. He tried out after his music teacher suggested it. “I love music,” he said. “It’s very fun, especially practising with adults.” Mace is currently exploring his artistic options and hasn’t settled on any path, but just wants to gain a variety of experiences. “There will be many surprises ... and a fair amount of laughs because there are some funny parts,” said Mace about the production. When asked about his young Nanaimo cast member, Fitzgerald had nothing but praise for Mace. “He’s got a cool twinkle in his eye. He has presence,” said Fitzgerald, adding that it’s a trait you can’t teach someone. Fitzgerald is glad to be back home to perform for his family, friends and Nanaimo residents. “It feels like you get a chance to give back to an audience that don’t get to hear you all the time,” said Fitzgerald. Amahl and the Night Visitors is Opera Nanaimo’s first “fully inhouse produced opera” according to the organization’s website. Fitzgerald said Opera Nanaimo “exposes people to a new art form” that they might not experience otherwise. The organization formed in the spring of 2014 with the goal of revitalizing opera in Nanaimo. Amahl shows Dec. 29-30, 7:30 p.m. at the Ecumenical Centre, located at 6234 Spartan Rd. Tickets are $20 or $15 for students in advance by calling 250754-8550 or visiting www.porttheatre.com. Tickets cost $28 at the door. Nanaimo News Bulletin Thursday, December 24, 2015

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET Goes out to Santa Greg from the finest consignment store around, Funk Your Fashion. Thank you ever so much for your kindness and generosity. BEEF To those car dealerships that send the worst environmentally friendly prize promotion with the plastic pulltab to Nanaimo households. BOUQUET To God for giving us His son. I look forward to celebrating with Him. Happy birthday, Jesus. BEEF To the stores that ask customers for donations for charity yet give nothing themselves. BOUQUET To those who put money in the Christmas kettles. It makes sitting in the cold so worthwhile. BEEF To the drivers who run the red light at Brechin and Estevan roads. Children from two elementary schools need to go home to their moms and dads at the end of the day. Please stop when the light is red. BOUQUET To Nancy and Jim from Abba Carpets. Great service and beautiful job laying vinyl planking. BEEF To the lady in the department store bathroom who tried touching my baby on his face and when asked not to called me a witch. Babies do not have strong immune systems and it is my right as his mother to ask strangers to not touch him. BOUQUET To the Harewood neighbours for caring, concern and helping some of us to get through the difficult days. You carry on the history of this unique part of Nanaimo. BEEF To the person who beefed about people sleeping on the bus stop benches. If the transit system was on time and efficient I wouldn’t fall asleep waiting for the bus. BOUQUET To Seatops Mobile Marine for taking pride in your top-notch work. Comfy chairs. You’re tops in our book.

BEEF To the government. My elderly father, who is on a fixed income, was charged $104 for a pneumonia shot.

BOUQUET To a very nice, kind bus driver Noel. He was going beyond his duties to help a bus passenger.

BOUQUET To Jim of Nu-Star heating who provided expert, cheerful service on my electric furnace. A professional job.

BOUQUET To beautiful people at the News Bulletin. Thank you very much.

BOUQUET To the nice people at the Superstore deli department. You are the only one in Nanaimo cutting the salami really thin with a smile. And you are always polite. BOUQUET To Carole and Ken for their work every Thursday for the dance group at Bowen Seniors. Also to your helpers Irene and Joe. You all make our evenings thoroughly enjoyable and we thank you. BOUQUET Faith restored again in humanity seems a cliché sometimes, but thank you to strangers who stopped with blankets, called an ambulance, took my bike home for me, etc. People helping people these days – special or the norm?

BOUQUET To the efficient cashiers at Thrifty Foods at Port Place shopping centre. BOUQUET To all nice, hard-working bus drivers. Thank you for driving safely. BOUQUET To a lovely lady, Maria, and to others at Nanaimo Home Hardware.

BOUQUET To everyone who so generously donated after a devastating fire destroyed my son’s home. Special thanks to Shear Creations and clients. BOUQUET As grandparents of 10 it does our hearts good to see and hear the kids during the ‘yell off’ at the hockey games. Nice to see them out watching hockey. BOUQUET To the group of carollers that came to our door on Parton Drive and brought such cheer with their singing and the sweet little angel with them. BOUQUET To all drivers who use care and caution on Brechin hill intersection. The children at risk appreciate you. So do I, the crossing guard. BOUQUET To Isaac for the coffee, and to citizens who have provided a hot drink on those cold mornings and afternoons. BOUQUET To Happy Haulers Jim and Stan. There is almost nothing they won’t do to help you. Two great men with hearts of gold. BOUQUET To Nanaimo citizens for their generous donations to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 256’s annual poppy campaign. Thanks to your generosity, we collected approximately $48,000 to help our veterans and seniors in need.

BOUQUET To Andy for singing and playing for Christmas parties at Dufferin Place. We always enjoy your entertainment. Also, kudos to Marcus for all the dancing fun.

BOUQUET To housekeeping, transitions and psychiatry staff at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital from Lorna Crowder. All the best in 2016. It’s been great working with you all.

BOUQUET To the staff and volunteers at Dufferin Place for all the hard work they put into making our Christmas parties so wonderful. The food was great and it was lovely to have our families with us.

BOUQUET To Isabella Ostman for the work she does all year making crafts to sell for the Great Nanaimo Toy Drive. This year, she was able to donate $900 because of her efforts.

BOUQUET To Nanaimo Nissan for all the assistance and personal attention they have provided. All wonderful friendly staff from sales, management, reception, service and car wash boys.

Submit your own Beef or Bouquet Beefs & Bouquets is a free forum to give thanks or express views on issues and events. The News Bulletin reserves the right to edit or refuse submissions. Mail or deliver to the News Bulletin, 777B Poplar St., Nanaimo, V9S 2H7 or e-mail to bulletinboard@nanaimobulletin.com. Fax to 250-753-0788.

BOUQUET To the people on Jasmine Place who gathered up the newspapers that were blowing all over the street during the horrible storm last week. It was truly appreciated because when I tried to gather them up, more newspapers blew off the top of my cart creating more of a mess.

’Tis the night before Christmas

Coastal Cup girls to provincials did swarm, With silver awarded to U18 Storm. Robertson, Kirk, and Horsley could smile; Whiting and Baird were coaches with style!

BY IAN THORPE

’T

is the night before Christmas, and all through the town, Not an athlete is stirring, as leagues are shut down. Teammates and others call time out and pause, Awaiting the road trip of someone named Claus.

Men’s team United for Greenaway shoot; Andre was winner of league Golden Boot! Fitzgerald as coach had the women United; Strebel with Martin and Chase were delighted. Mariner women had Kang as their guide; Second in province gave Rodgers great pride. Fourth at provincials the men’s team did get, With Merriman, Brown, and captain Arnett.

Now my annual gift every year at this time, Is a series of greetings composed into rhyme. The aim is to offer a thank you of sorts, To folks who are known for involvement in sports.

ootball Nanaimo has Russell and Wright; FWith Roden and Bryson were also in sight. Faickney, Borserio, Miller on field,

To honour achievements of year that is past, Names of some people I’ve quickly amassed. Apologies, though, to those that I’ve missed: There are simply too many to fit on my list!

MVP honours did Dennis-Orr wield.

Raiders this season in league did just fine; Erdman was coaching, as Conn did resign. O’Brien and Atwall both warrant a toast; Bowles and Rodriguez of honours can boast.

So my effort at verse I hope you’ll accept, Though much of the rhyming is somewhat inept. Critics may moan, but this I do know: My poem is as ready as Justin Trudeau!

To playoffs provincial the Bulldogs did glide, But three-peat for Barsby was sadly denied. Cooper had Fletcher as defensive cog; Stevenson coaching was really ‘top Dawg!’

W

ith hockey we’ll start, as kids love to skate, Which Davis, MacDonald, and Long will relate. There’s Becia, Coulson, Paziuk, Russell; Dubyna and Boehm get players to hustle.

\

Youth soccer has Coates, Wassermann, Myhrer; Blumenthrath, Francis, and Brown never tire. Butler at Beban keeps track of the scores; Landry’s in charge of the referee chores.

At Pioneer Park, where rugby teams come, Perry encouraged new players to scrum. Division 1 Hornets had Marshall take kicks, For Milford and Stokes, and president Wicks.

Girls on the ice have Whitford with heart; For Robinson, Islanders women take part. Brother and sister named Hardy could cheer; Both siblings at Canada Games did appear!

Santa Claus celebrates a goal at Frank Crane Arena with Nanaimo Clippers forward Matt Hoover.

Old-timer hockey has icing with Cake; Tyce passes to Briggs, on knees that may ache. Edwards and Monk will the teams oversee; Ethier watches as head referee!

As for our Clippers, the fans can delight; Nanaimo this season has first place in sight. Vandekamp’s players have been on a streak; Ten wins in a row was extremely unique!

n arenas each summer, lacrosse teams do show; IBowmen Junior A players had captain named Roe. and Couling helped light the team fire;

In rec team division, Shockers went far, With Wynia, Falk, Granholm and Tarr. Brzovic helps to make ball hockey run; Ringette type of ice sport for Therrien’s fun.

Defencemen like Kaldis and Reilly are set; Johnson and Walter are solid in net. Hoover, Brousseau, are quick to give chase, But Rempal as scorer is setting hot pace!

Swanson and Diplock, on team senior B, With Patterson, Maughan, had reason for glee. A championship banner the team could hold up, Advancing to play at the Presidents Cup!

North Island Silvertips answer the call, With Heathcote and Davis, Sexton and Krall. Levesques are the owners of Bucs junior B; Lemmon’s now coaching, so wins they will see.

ow soccer has matches for young and for old; NYoungsters For men and for women, in heat or in cold; with Hackett and Evans hone skills;

For Timbermen entry in league senior A, Came Ratcliff and Nicholson leading the way. Missing the playoffs gave Toth some concern; Ranger with Shamrocks a Mann Cup did earn!

File photo

Mini Cup tourney gave Kirby some thrills.

Intermediate players were sparked by O’Dwyer.

Up at Serauxmen, where baseball is king, Coal Miner league with MacKinnon did swing. From college-aged players like Schroter we hear, Blundell and his Mariners had a great year.

Coach Sherry with Staddon a gold medal shared, At national bowling for vision impaired. Elsewhere on grass, Niamath likes cricket; Field hockey action for Eby’s the ticket.

Leaf and MacNeil help to run minor ball; With Neff and Holyk, they’re volunteers all. Buckle’s involved, Humphreys and Vance; Eade behind plate took an umpire’s stance!

When everything’s over it’s nice to have won, But games for the kids should always be fun. Let everyone play, no matter the score; To ‘win at all costs,’ I really deplore. No matter what sport, one rule is the same: Always play fair, whatever the game! And try to remember that when you compete, Be humble in winning, show grace in defeat.
