FRUITVALE
Village highlights its history through heritage walk VALERIE ROSSI Trail Times
Fruitvale is encouraging residents and visitors to wander down memory lane with a heritage walk that will capture the village’s history. Developing Eastview Park is the start of an overall vision that celebrates the community with an inviting entrance way to the downtown core. Fruitvale’s Heritage Walk Project gained some momentum when Fruitvale secured a $10,000 grant from FortisBC, matched by Area A ($10,000), and a commitment from the company to help put the park together on FortisBC Community Giving Days, April 30. “Every year, FortisBC provides funding and volunteer hours for a variety of community initiatives that work towards making our communities a brighter place,” explained Amy Bunton, corporate communications advisor. “FortisBC Community Giving Days provide our employees with the opportunity to support the communities in which we work and live.” Employees will help plant bushes, shrubs and trees, the latter donated from Atco Wood Products. The green space dug up with help from Wayne’s Excavating will run along a newly paved
path. The winding walkway will be intercepted by a garden and a lounging area to encourage people to stay awhile and enjoy the view. Any additional expenses will be covered by the village, which in the meantime eagerly awaits plans to jump off the page. “I think Fruitvale has a lot of heritage here and we want to make sure that that’s documented, and people can stop in and enjoy that part,” said Fruitvale Mayor Patricia Cecchini. The first phase of the project will see the development of a park in between the railway track and Eastview Street while the second part includes heritage signage that will identify historical buildings and tell the story behind the village facade. Cecchini said there is also a hope of creating a replica of an old train station, which will further encourage pedestrians to take a stroll while learning a little history. Fruitvale was originally named Beaver Siding in 1893 as a railway stop for the Nelson and Fort Sheppard Railway, which was later acquired by the Great Northern Railroad. In 1906, Fruitvale Limited purchased land on both sides of this stop and changed the name to Fruitvale. It was incorporated on Nov. 4, 1952.

Ray Tenisci and Primo Secco (right) unveiled an exhibit on loan by the Trail and District Library, that tells the stories of Italian Canadians interned during the Second World War. Tenisci and Secco are descendents of two Trail men who were labelled enemy aliens and interned in Canada. The display can be viewed on the Red Floor during regular arena hours, and is free of charge.

It was a quiet Monday afternoon in 1940 when government authorities swept the home of Christine Demarco’s grandfather and hauled him off to an internment camp. Carmine Demarco was 17 when he came to Canada in 1902. He was naturalized in 1907, then briefly returned to Italy to
fight for the Allies during the Great War. Demarco returned home to Ontario when the war ended in 1918 and served as president of a group of First World War battalion veterans. He married, began raising three children, and ran Demarco’s Confectionery, a family business that Christine likens to Trail’s Star Grocery. “All across Canada at approximately 1 p.m. that day (June 10, 1940) RCMP and local authorities identified and raided Italian homes,” Demarco said. “They entered
my grandparents store, their home, searched it from attic to basement, and arrested him without warning and without explanation of charges.” In the darkness of night, her grandfather was transferred from a Thunder Bay jail to a stock yard in Toronto. From there, Demarco was sent and confined in Petawawa, one of four Italian Canadian internment camps in Canada. “During this time those who feared any connection in association with our family boycotted the family business…store windows were
soaped with humiliating messages and threats,” she said. “Many prominent Canadians, including doctors, lawyers, a few German farmers were interned, even the Mayor of Montreal, who was in the same hut as my grandfather.” Demarco, who lives in Rossland, spoke to a crowd of invited guests Sunday afternoon at the opening of “Ordinary Lives, Extraordinary Times: Italian Canadian Internment Experience.” After three years of planning, the Trail and District CONTINUED ON A2 Contact the Times:

CONTINUED FROM A1 Public Library brought the exhibit to the city last week, and is showing it until the end of March. Hundreds of Italian Canadians, including seven men from Trail, were taken from their homes, separated from their families, and held in prison or remote camps during the Second World War. The Canadian government claimed they were threats to national security, fearing many had ties to fascist Italian organizations. Some were released within a few months, and others remained in custody up to five years. No interned Italian was ever charged or convicted of any war-related crime. Trail is the only city in Western Canada to display the exhibit which is on loan from the Columbus Centre in Toronto. Those listed from Trail are Ermando Cecconi; Eugenio Della Lana; Augusto Secco; Pompilio Di Vito; Silvio Romano; Ennio Vittorio Fabri; and Fioravante Tenisci, a Cominco worker sent to Kananaskis then Petawawa for three years. “The exhibit reveals part of our nation’s and this community’s history, which is literally unknown,” said board chair Barbara Gibson, during the opening reception. “We are thrilled to be able to bring it to Trail because the culture in this community, in large part, is made up of the descents of those people who immigrated, put down their roots and stayed here.” “Ordinar y Lives, Extraordinary Times…” can be viewed on the Red Floor of the Trail Memorial Centre, just outside the library entrance, during regular arena hours and at no charge. For decades, little was known about this dark period of Canadian history. The primary reason being the interned men and their families chose to erase this episode of their lives and not speak about it privately or publicly. “My grandfather returned a broken man, sad, defeated, shamed and betrayed,” Demarco shared. “Many detainees retreated into a world

Slopes for Hope gears up for fourth run Cancer Society puts new twist on Relay for Life
Slopes for Hope Red Mountain and Black Jack planning committee are gearing up for the fourthannual event. Front row: Natalie McKay, Allison McCarthy (annual giving coordinator with Canadian Cancer Society), Carmen Davis, Dario Cescon and Helen Ling are joined by back row: Jason Proulx (Gerick Sports owner, who donated a pair of K2 men’s skis for the Slopes for Hope raffle), Kim Mercer and Dave Nutini.

The fight against cancer is reaching new heights with the fourth-annual Slopes for Hope challenge. The Canadian Cancer Society is inviting snowboarders, alpine and Nordic skiers to take part in the Red Mountain Resort and Black Jack Ski Club event Feb. 21. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to sign up individually or as a team and start raising funds for the skiathlon that has participants attempting to ski or board the vertical height of Mount Everest, 29, 029 feet, in one day. Alpine skiers can achieve this, for instance, with about 21 runs on Red Mountain or 13 runs on Motherlode. The Everest trek, for Nordic skiers, is a 10-kilometre challenge at Black Jack via Gibbards Trail and Aqueduct-Roger’s Route. Last year’s event raised just over $19,000 and this year’s goal has lifted the bar to $25,000. “This is a great event and a wonderful way for the ski community to get involved in the fight against cancer,” said Allison McCarthy, annual giving coordinator for B.C. and the Yukon. About half of all cancers can be prevented, according to the Canadian Cancer Society, by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “Skiing and snowboarding are great ways to stay active during the winter months,” McCarthy adds. “It is a great way to get our cancer prevention message out to the community, raise funds to support our mission and have fun.” Money raised will help the Canadian Cancer Society fund cancer research, cancer prevention initiatives and support services such as the wig bank at the Trail office and affordable lodging near treatment centres in Kelowna and Vancouver. All participants who raise $100 or more will receive a half price lift ticket at Red or
free day pass at Black Jack. An apres celebration will draw the day to a close with entertainment and prizes like the coveted “Golden Boot Trophy” given to the team that achieves the most vertical feet and raises top funds. “With this amazing snow we’ve been having this year it’s not going to be a hard thing to ask of people,” added McCarthy. “With all of this fresh powder we’ve been getting, I think it’s a great tie-in for people to get out there and ski and be a part of something that’s important.” The same event will be held at other ski hills this winter, with Whitewater holding its fundraiser on March 5, in which the Nelson Nordic Ski Club is running an Everest trek option for the first time. Local participants can register online at slopesforhope.ca by selecting “Red Mountain” and start gathering financial backing for their efforts. Registration has also opened up for Trail’s first Daffodil Dash, which is replacing the Relay for Life event that had 15 successful years in Trail. “As they say, all good things must come to an end, and with that sentiment in mind the society decided to launch a new event,” explained McCarthy. The Daffodil Dash is scheduled for
April 24 at Gyro Park. The family-friendly event from 9 a.m. until about noon is designed for runners or walkers of all fitness levels, including children. The dash is comprised of a 3 km walk or 5 and 10 km run and also includes a 100-meter dash for the little ones. Just like relay, the event will celebrate cancer survivors and remember those loved ones lost. Individuals and teams will start at Gyro and loop through Sunningdale before returning to the park for some entertainment. “We are excited to begin a new chapter with this Daffodil Dash event in Trail,” said McCarthy. “We heard feedback from the community, including our dedicated and passionate volunteers, saw annual declines in participation and felt a need to re-energize the spirit of an event in Trail.” The dash coincides with the annual April Daffodil Campaign, where the society sells fresh cut daffodils and puts out yellow daffodil pins throughout the community. To sign up for the dash, visit cancer.ca/daffodildash To volunteer at Slopes for Hope or the Daffodil Dash, contact McCarthy at 250-364-0403 or via email at amccarthy@ bc.cancer.ca

Stolen vehicle with infant inside recovered, Fruitvale woman arrested A 24-year-old Fruitvale woman is facing several charges in connection with an incident in Cranbrook involving a four-month-old child. On Saturday at 10:47 a.m. Cranbrook RCMP received a frantic report of a stolen vehicle with a four-month old infant inside. Investigation revealed the complainant was traveling from Trail to Kimberley when

she ran into a female acquaintance in Fruitvale who requested a ride. The complainant left the vehicle running with both passenger and her daughter inside as she briefly attended a Cranbrook residence. Upon discovering the vehicle and occupants gone she immediately called 9-1-1. Shortly after, Cranbrook RCMP received a report of an impaired driver with fresh vehicle damage at the Tamarack mall parking lot, which turned
out to be the same stolen vehicle. Two Cranbrook citizens quickly identified the safety concern with the infant’s presence and provided assistance while phoning police. RCMP members were quick to respond and returned the unharmed infant immediately to her mother. The driver was arrested at scene and transported to Cranbrook RCMP cells. Cranbrook RCMP are proposing several criminal charg-
es including Child Abduction, Impaired Driving and Refusing to Provide a Breath Sample. The woman was scheduled to appear before a Judicial Justice of the peace on Monday. The investigation is ongoing and includes assistance from the Ministry of Children and Family Development. Cranbrook RCMP applauded the actions of the two citizens in the quick and safe return of the child in a situation that could very well have ended tragically.

‘Avatar’ sequel bombs in Walbran
“
Avatar,” the future-fantasy blockbuster that beat “Titanic” as all-time Hollywood box office champ, has finally been unseated by the latest “Star Wars” space opera. I watched “Avatar” on TV over the holidays for the first time since its 2009 release, and was able to see past the bombastic special effects to examine it for what it is, an anti-capitalist propaganda film. Psychopathic military commander teams with evil mining executive to blast and slaughter their way to a chunk of rare mineral, ridiculously named “unobtainium.” Giant tree, home of highly evolved Na’vi people and their delicate jungle ecosystem, is toppled for sadistic fun and profit, before nature’s collective strikes back. Canadian director James Cameron helped the global anti-development network use the movie in its celebrity attack on the Alberta oil industry. Now the story line is being employed again in B.C., in an effort to revive the 1990s “war in the woods” that led to the creation of Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park on Vancouver Island. Protest tactics are being refined.

Protesters are targeting other operations, none of which are in the contentious Walbran “bite” area next to the park. Teal-Jones has not only received permits and worked with environmental organizations, its operations are independently certified by the Canadian Standards Association. A B.C. Supreme Court judge granted an extension of the injunction protecting Teal-Jones’ operations on Jan. 4. The judge wasn’t swayed by protesters packing the Victoria courtroom, and upheld a 50-metre safety zone around working equipment in the Walbran Valley until the end of March. A Wilderness Committee spokesman with no evident forestry qualifications was appalled. He will no doubt continue to issue news releases and write his own version for left-wing fringe publications that seek to perpetuate an urban culture of revulsion for logging. First Nations ‘The Revenant’ actor ‘choked up’ by DiCaprio speech THE C ANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - First Nations actor Duane Howard admits he “choked up” when “The Revenant” star Leonardo DiCaprio dedicated his Golden Globe trophy to indigenous communities around the world. Howard says he and his friends were watching in Vancouver when DiCaprio took the stage on Sunday to claim the best dramatic film actor award for his role in the 19th century survival epic. DiCaprio shared the award with “all the First Nations people represented in this film and all the indigenous communities around the world.” Howard plays lead Arikara warrior Elk Dog in the drama, which was partly shot in Alberta and British Columbia and features dozens of local actors and crew members. He calls DiCaprio’s speech “really meaningful,” and says he’d like to see more meticulous portrayals of indigenous culture come out of Hollywood. “The Revenant” also earned Golden Globes for best dramatic film and for director Alejandro Inarritu. DiCaprio plays fur trapper Hugh Glass, who is left for dead after being attacked by a bear. Desperate to survive, he braves icy waters and an unforgiving wilderness in search of the hunting team that left him behind. “It is time we recognize your history and that we protect your indigenous lands from corporate interests and people that are out there to exploit them,” DiCaprio said in his acceptance speech. “It is time that we heard your voice and protected this planet for future generations.” Howard said Monday from Vancouver that he was moved by DiCaprio’s words. “That’s really meaningful when a Hollywood celebrity like that reaches out to the world and acknowledges us First Nations people like that, that means something,” he said. “Hollywood’s got to be more open to us, as First Nations people of this land.... More and more of these films have to come out.” The Canadian cast also includes child actor Isaiah Tootoosis from the Poundmaker First Nation, who plays Hugh’s son, and Grace Dove, as Hugh’s wife.

LETTERS & OPINION
Debunking the myths of Canadian health, fiscal and energy policy
H
umans have always believed in myths, despite evidence that shows those beliefs had no foundation in fact. Sixteenth century Italian physicist Galileo Galilei was convicted of heresy after he angered Pope Urban VIII by publishing telescopic observations supporting Copernicus’s theory that the Earth revolved around the sun, rather than the other way around. More than a century would pass before the church fully accepted his conclusions. Given the immense expansion of knowledge over the ensuing centuries, plus the ubiquitous online access to that information, you would expect that erroneous ideas would have a very short lifespan. And yet, as a New Year dawns,
the list of unfounded beliefs seems to lengthen, not shorten. Here are three myths that became even more pervasive in Canada over past year. • Deficit spending makes people better off. Look no further than Europe to see the folly of this. Deficit spending means borrowing money. And as debts rise, investor confidence falls. This leads to lower credit ratings, which translate into higher interest costs, leaving governments with no choice but to adopt severe austerity budgets that slash social programs. This scenario played out in Canada from 1968 to 1984, when Pierre Trudeau was prime minister. Public spending rose from 30 to 53 per cent of GDP, driving the federal deficit to over $32 billion ($66 billion in 2015 dollars) and in-

creasing the national debt by more than 700 per cent. Canada’s international credit rating collapsed, taking the Canadian dollar with it. By 1981, Canada’s bank prime lending rate had reached an incredible 22 per cent, causing personal and corporate bankruptcies while stifling private investment. Canada was transformed from one of the world’s strongest countries financially into an economic basket case. It would be two
decades before tough fiscal discipline stabilized and began to reduce Canada’s real dollar debt. • Canada has one of the world’s best health-care systems. Year after year, international surveys show the opposite. A 2014 Commonwealth Fund report found the performance of our country’s health-care system ranked well behind that of Australia, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the U.K. And a 2013 Organization for Economic Coop erat ion and Development report found that, despite spending 36 per cent more per capita, Canada has the longest wait times for elective surgery. Tellingly, Canada is the only country that forbids access to private alternatives to
Supreme Court faces tough choice on assisted-death ruling
An editorial from the Halifax Chronicle-Herald Less than a month before the Supreme Court of Canada’s landmark ruling permitting doctorassisted death is to take effect, it remains unclear what -- if anything -- will change Feb. 6. Last February, the high court unanimously struck down the Criminal Code’s absolute ban on physician-assisted death. It ruled the prohibition violated the Charter rights of those suffering “grievous and irremediable” medical conditions who clearly wanted to end their own lives. Crucially, however, the court also suspended its ruling for a year, to give doctors, Parliament and provinces time to create “a carefully designed and monitored system of safeguards” to limit risk of abuse and protect the vulnerable. Eleven months and pocket change later, lawyers for the new Liberal federal government are set to appear before the Supreme Court today to request a sixmonth extension of that suspended ruling. At least 20 other groups have been granted status as interveners. A number of provincial jus-
tice ministers, including Nova Scotia’s, support Ottawa’s request. The Liberals argue that the former Conservative government -- which disliked the high court’s decision -- dragged its feet on the matter and got little done before last summer’s early election call. The subsequent campaign further delayed progress. Given the complexities of the issue, and their late start, the Liberals say more time is needed for study and debate, with a goal of passing new legislation in Parliament before it rises this June. Ironically, when Tory officials suggested last February that due to the issue’s complexity and the complications of an election year, their government -- if re-elected -- planned to ask the high court for an extension, the Liberals then argued such a delay would be inhumane to those whose Charter rights would be further denied, forcing them to keep living in intolerable pain. Yet there’s no doubt questions remain unanswered about how doctor-assisted deaths would work in day-to-day practice. Last August, The Globe and Mail’s Andre Picard pointed out a number of crucial questions. For
example, who determines a patient’s capacity to consent? Must doctors refer if unwilling to perform the act themselves? A special joint parliamentary committee on assisted dying was struck last month by the House of Commons, but its deadline for coming up with recommendations for a new law is Feb. 26, several weeks after the high court’s pause of its landmark ruling is scheduled to end. Meanwhile, Quebec has already passed its own law authorizing assisted dying. Late last month, that legislation was upheld by Quebec’s court of appeal in a fascinating ruling that argued the law met the spirit of the high court’s ruling last February. Ottawa has praised Quebec’s leadership and said its law would inspire its own efforts. The Supreme Court has granted such extensions on rulings involving Charter rights before, but it’s unclear if the high court will accept, in this instance, that institutional excuses for government inaction should trump the continuation of real harms for people suffering with terminal illnesses who wish to end their own lives.

our overwhelmed and underperforming monopolistic government system. • Wind and solar power can lead to a fossil-fuel-free world. This is a prime example of the propensity for people to believe almost anything if you repeat it often enough. Nowhere was this tactic employed more vigorously than at the recent COP21 global warming conference in Paris. But wishing and hoping for something doesn’t make it a reality. As Galileo famously said, “In questions of science, the authority of thousands is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual.” It doesn’t take an exceptionally gifted mind like Galileo’s
to know that the sun doesn’t always shine and that, outside of the tropical latitudes, the days are too short and the sun angle too low to generate much solar power. Or that power cannot be generated at night when it is actually needed. Similarly, the wind doesn’t always blow. This unreliability requires solar panels and windmills to be backed up by other energy generation facilities and these are mainly driven by fossil fuels. Adding to those realities is the fact that wind and solar facilities are fiendishly expensive. That has been demonstrated by Ontario’s disastrous green power subsidy, which more than doubled power rates while yielding small amounts
M Q
of energy. Likewise in Germany and the U.K., where despite hundreds of billions in publicly-funded subsidies, wind and solar power have resulted in a tiny, unreliable source of electricity. Believing in some myths has little societal impact. But when these beliefs are widespread enough to influence our country’s financial stability, health care or energy supplies, they can do real harm. Canadians would be wise to seek out truths rather than believing the myths spouted by those whose sole purpose is to advance their own agendas. BRETT Last season, the 20-yearCLARK old Poirier was solid in net for the Nitehawks posting a 19-7 record with a .908 save percentage, but since suffering from a virus earlier this year, the Trail native struggled to return to form going 15-10-1 with a .887 save percentage. “We had arranged an opportunity for him to go to Revelstoke but he’s got school and it was too difficult for him to make that work,” said Beaver Valley coach and GM Terry Jones. “It’s a very difficult situation.” Clark, meanwhile, has been on the move for most of the year in Junior A, playing in the BCHL with West Kelowna, the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, and Calgary Mustangs of the Alberta Junior League. The 20-year-old Grande Prairie native also played a full season with the Trail Smoke Eaters in 2014-15, a year after backstopping the Nitehawks to the KIJHL championship and the Keystone Cup Jr. B Western Canadian title in April 2014. In four games at the Keystone, Clark posted a 1.00 goals against average and .962 save percentage. In 30 games with the Hawks that year, Clark won 22 games, and sported a 2.73 GAA and a .916 save percentage. “It’s a hockey decision, but when you care about kids and are invested in kids, it’s a very difficult process,” said Jones. The Nitehawks also lost the services of Jaxon Joseph who was signed by the BCHL’s Surrey Eagles on Thursday. “He scored two goals this weekend, and we’re thrilled for him to get that opportunity,” said Jones. The promotion of Joseph, however, leaves the Hawks with an open card. “We were pursuing a few options, trying to find somebody yesterday (Sunday), and we had a couple of irons in the fire but nothing panned out, so we’ll just have to wait and see, when the dust clears. There are a few guys out there right now, but we’re pretty happy with our roster right now.” In Sunday’s game in Spokane, Hawks goalie Tallon Kramer earned the shutout, Tyler Ghiradosi scored twice, and Jayce Weegar had a three-point night in a 6-0 drubbing of the Spokane Braves. A wild Wild-card weekend in NFL
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Just get in is the mantra of NFL teams as they chase playoff berths. Wild-card weekend displayed why that philosophy works. Now, can the Packers, Seahawks, Steelers and Chiefs carry it further? All four took to the road and won, the first time that’s happened since the current playoff format was adopted in 1990. It was anything but easy for Seattle and Pittsburgh, slightly less challenging for Green Bay, and a romp for Kansas City. Still, they swept, and Aaron Rodgers suspects for the same main reason. “We’ve got a great home-field advantage, but when you go on the road, you galvanize together,” he said after a 35-18 win at Washington. “It’s you and your loyal fans there against the entire stadium. “We came together
(Sunday). We played for each other. There was a time there, down 11-0, where people could have started to have that doubt creep in. But it didn’t happen today.” The doubt could have crept in even more so for the Steelers, who needed some bone headedness by the Bengals - did someone say Bungles? - to advance. And for the Seahawks, who stood frozen on the sideline and watched Minnesota’s Blair Walsh miss a chip-shot field goal at game’s end. “I think we were fortunate that we got the win,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said after the third-coldest NFL game on record. “A lot of those times, guys make those kicks. There’s a high percentage that they make them, but you’ve still got to do it.” What the Seahawks (11-6) now have to do is win at Carolina (15-1), which had the NFL’s best record, in-
cluding a win at Seattle. The Packers (11-6) also have an unenviable task, heading to Arizona (133), which routed them 38-8 in Week 16. The Chiefs (12-5), winners of 11 in a row, earned a trip to New England (12-4), and might head there without star receiver Jeremy Maclin. A battered Pittsburgh (11-6) goes to Denver (12-4), which it beat 34-27 in Week 15 at Heinz Field. Formidable challenges, for sure - particularly for the Steelers if three key offensive players are sidelined. All-Pro receiver Antonio Brown suffered a concussion at Cincinnati, QB Ben Roethlisberger hurt his right shoulder, and running back DeAngelo Williams (foot) didn’t even suit up on the weekend. But all four wild cards should be brimming with confidence, even if unlike in the
opening round, they aren’t favoured by the oddsmakers. “They didn’t really care where we play, they wanted to know who we were going to play, and let’s go,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “They put everything in it. That’s how playoff games are, you just exhaust yourself and get ready for the next one, and exhaust yourself for that one, and that’s kind of how that thing rolls. I didn’t sense anything different from them. That’s just kind of how they’ve been. We’ll do our thing, and do it again.” All four wild-card winners have done relatively well away from home. Kansas City, Seattle and Green Bay were 5-3, Pittsburgh was 4-4 during the regular season. The upcoming hosts were 7-1 (New England, Carolina and Arizona) or 6-2 (Denver).
The Chiefs can’t rely on Tom Brady and the Patriots to turn over the ball the way Brian Hoyer and the Texans did. Pittsburgh knows the Broncos won’t beat themselves as the Bengals did. Green Bay fully understands the defence it will face in Arizona is far superior to Washington’s. Seattle, probably still giving thanks for Walsh’s wayward kick, knows that scoring in only one quarter - and only 10 points - won’t be enough against Carolina. But to dismiss any of them in this unusual NFL season would be folly. Rodgers has shown time and again his propensity for producing in the spotlight, and the Packers already own a Super Bowl ring as a wild card. So do the Steelers, whose resolve can never be questioned.
Nitehawks shut out Braves
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8 B.V. fired 70 shots at the Braves’ net, including 26 in the first period as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals from Alan Pruss, Ghiradosi, and Blake Sidoni. Braden Fuller scored the only goal in the middle frame to give B.V. a 4-0 lead, and Ghiradosi and Weegar rounded out the scoring in the third. Kramer stopped 28 shots on the night for his first shutout as a Nitehawk. “After those three games with
A division of
tough results, the guys had a great week of practice and then played very, very well,” added Jones. On Saturday night at home, the Hawks scored five-first period goals en route to a 7-3 victory over the Leafs. Kyle Hope, Braden Fuller, Blake Sidoni, Devin Nemes, Allan Pruss, Ryan Terpsma and Devin Ghirardosi each scored for the division-leading Nitehawks. Kramer made 39 saves for the win, while Ostermann finished with 24 stops for the Leafs.
With the two victories the 27-8-2-2 Nitehawks remain in top spot in the Neil Murdoch division, eight points up on the Castlegar Rebels, who lost 8-2 to the Creston Valley Wildcats Friday, before bouncing back with wins over Spokane, 6-3, and Grand Forks, 5-2, on Saturday and Sunday. The Nitehawks next face the Rebels at the Hawks Nest on Friday with the puck drop at 7:30 p.m.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” stayed on top of the North American box office for the fourth straight weekend, beating out Leonardo DiCaprio in “The Revenant,” and becoming the third-largest grossing movie in the world ever. According to studio estimates Sunday, the adventures of Rey, Finn and stalwarts from the previous “Star Wars” films raked in $41.6 million in the U.S. and Canada and $104.3 million overseas, led by a record-breaking opening in China. Disney distribution Executive Vice-President Dave Hollis said the expected $53 million debut weekend in China was “spectacular” given the film is the first “Star Wars” episode many Chinese people have ever seen. “We’re very encouraged,” he said. In the U.S. and Canada, it is the biggest movie ever and the first to pass $800 million with $812 million so far. Its global total now stands at $1.73 billion, according to The Walt Disney Co., passing “Jurassic World,” with $1.67 billion. The film now has in its sights No. 2 “Titanic,” with its $2.2 billion box office haul in 1997-98, and No. 1 “Avatar,” from 2009-2010 at $2.8 billion. Its place as the all-time biggest movie is by no means assured, according to Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with Rentrak. “Avatar” had a smaller opening but kept ringing cash registers through awards season, something that won’t be clear for “Star Wars” until the Oscar nominations on Thursday. “I don’t think it’s necessarily predestined,” Dergarabedian said. “That’s a big number. It’s a tough number to get to. I think $2 billion is in the cards but if any movie has that potential (to be No. 1), it would certainly be ‘The Force Awakens.”’ “The Revenant,” a gritty R-rated movie directed by Alejandro Inarritu about an 1820s frontiersman who gets mauled by a bear, blasted through expectations of about $25 million in its first weekend of wide release with a $38 million haul, following limited showings in New York and Los Angeles in December. Of the Top 10 films this weekend, only Focus Features’ “The Forest” was in theatres for the first time over the weekend, coming in fourth at $13.1 million.

It’s all in the family for Levy and ‘Schitt’s Creek’
THE C ANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - Expect to see more of the Levy clan on the CBC comedy “Schitt’s Creek,” says patriarch Eugene Levy. The proud papa says more screen time is in store for daughter Sarah Levy, whose role as a smalltown waitress was largely confined to the diner in the first season. Her role as Twyla expands to include more interaction with other townsfolk, while son Dan Levy digs deeper into the neuroses of his spoiled character, David Rose. Eugene, of course, returns as Johnny Rose, the head of a wealthy family who lose their fortune and are forced to move to a tiny community devoid of the luxuries they’re used to. The comic veteran can’t help but gush about working with his children during a recent interview. “It’s a kick for me doing scenes with both my kids. It’s hard to explain how strange it is to be working professionally with your own kids, saying, ‘Wait a minute. These are my kids!”’ the “SCTV” alum said during a recent round of interviews next to co-star Catherine O’Hara. “Thank God they’re talented. That could have been sad,” jokes O’Hara, who plays Johnny’s wife Moira. “Are you kidding? Yes, it could have been,” Levy groans. O’Hara says she was glad to see her character - a former soap star who spent much of the first season in denial - break out of her bubble in the second season. “And for me that was really fun,” she says. “I got to work with the cool women, all the actresses who play all the women in the town, including Sarah Levy.” If the first season was all about the Rose family’s desperate bid to escape newfound poverty, the second is all about them being forced to accept a new reality, says Dan Levy, the show’s co-creator. “We sort of broke the characters down individually and said, ‘OK, now that we know they are staying in this town for longer than they had thought they were going to, how would each of these people react?’ The second season of “Schitt’s Creek” begins Tuesday on CBC-TV with back-to-back episodes.

2016 Conceptis Puzzles, Dist. by King Features Syndicate, Inc.
Dear Annie: In October, I visited my family in France. Three weeks after I returned home, the terrorist attacks occurred. My husband was out of town and I was all alone. My family in France, thankfully, was safe. I consider myself a loyal friend. However, only one person called to ask about my family and about me. That person was actually a business acquaintance. I am deeply grateful for that call, but truly surprised and disappointed that there were no others. A family member phoned two days later, saying he had been so busy with work that he didn’t hear about the attacks until later. I was polite, but seriously, people would have to be living under a rock not to have heard the news immediately. It was an extremely difficult time for me, and I am terribly hurt and angry that no one else took a few seconds to ask whether my family was OK or to find out how I was handling things. I received a Christmas card from one friend
