and Kimberley RCMP, along with the Police Dog Service, the vehicle was stopped in Marysville. Two males were arrested on scene with one transported back to Cranbrook. A 23 year old Kimberley resident will remain in custody to appear before the courts. The second male, also from Kimberley, was released after being given a future court date.
Head on sends two to hospital Cranbrook RCMP responded to five motor vehicle accidents during the course of the day on January 5th, the most serious being a head on collision involving two vehicles. At approximately 4:50 p.m. Cranbrook RCMP were called to a motor vehicle accident at the Off Ramp to Highway 95A. A Chevy Tracker heading Northbound lost control on the slippery highways and careened head on into a southbound pickup truck. Both occupants of the Tracker were taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The occupants of the pickup truck were not injured. Cranbrook RCMP is continuing the investigation into this crash but road conditions appear to be the contributing factor.
Accident claims life
On January 7, at approximately 5:05 p.m., Elk Valley RCMP came across a motor vehicle accident on Highway 43 approximately 3 km south of Elkford, BC. The collision occurred when a northbound, Hyundai Accent lost control and entered the southbound lane, where it struck a commerical flatdeck vehicle. An 87 year old male from Elkford was pronounced deceased on scene. The 21 year old male driver of the commercial vehicle was transported to Elk Valley Hospital with minor injuries. The matter is being investigated by RCMP and the B.C. Coroner’s Services. It is believed that driving too fast for road conditions was a contributing factor in this collision.

Government proposes hydro break for struggling mines

Red Chris Mine in northwest B.C. began operation this summer after protests and multiple reviews of its tailings facility. It processes one of the world’s largest copper-gold deposits, but low commodity prices threaten operation for this and other B.C. mines. by Tom Fletcher The B.C. government is considering a payment deferral pro-
A division of
gram for mines’ electrical bills, to help keep mines running during an extended slump in metal and coal prices.
Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett is taking a proposal to cabinet that would allow mines to defer
a portion of the BC Hydro bills, with repayment to begin when prices of copper and other mineral com-
modities reach a certain stage. Imperial Metals announced this week that Huckleberry Mine. a
copper-gold mine south of Smithers, is suspending pit operations and laying off 100 of 260 employees. Bennett told Black Press the continued slump in world commodity prices means more job losses are on the way. Electricity deferrals were used by the NDP government in the 1990s and Social Credit in the 1980s. Bennett said unlike the NDP program that varied rates with commodity prices, he is proposing that mining companies repay deferred funds with commercial interest, with no net burden to taxpayers or BC Hydro ratepayers. “If we can’t figure out something to help reduce operating costs, there’s going to be not just layoffs, there’s going to be mines shutting down,” Bennett said. “I don’t expect bankruptcies and I don’t expect shutdowns forever, but you definitely would see temporary shutdowns until commodity prices come back. And you may see that

anyway, even with the program.” The province loses income tax revenue and BC Hydro loses power sales when industries scale back or shut down, which would put pressure on government services and BC Hydro rates. That gives the province incentive to use a deferral program, he said. Bennett vowed that the rate deferral would not be approved if BC Hydro price caps in the current rate plan were affected. Hydro rates jumped nine per cent in 2014, followed by annual increases of six, four, 3.5 and three per cent in the 10-year rate plan. Starting with the proposed four per cent increase in 2016, the independent B.C. Utilities Commission (BCUC) is reviewing if rate increases can be lower than what is capped in the rate plan.

Views Opinion: New Year, new learning opportunities by Mike Bernier Minister of Education This past fall, B.C. students and teachers continued to prepare for success in a changing world as classrooms began phasing in new curriculum that will make B.C.’s world-leading education system even better. The new curriculum still focuses on the basics - reading, writing and arithmetic. But those are being taught
in a way that students also learn the collaboration, critical thinking and communications skills they need to succeed in our changing world. Teachers, students and parents all benefit when learning becomes more flexible. If your child is passionate about space travel, starting a business or producing videos, teachers can tap into that passion and help students build their
learning around it. Our education system is already recognized as one of the top three internationally. Why do we need to change? In part, because technology is transforming the way we live and it’s changing the way kids learn. With information at the press of a button, the education system that worked for us years ago is not as effective as it used to be for today’s young learners. With labour stability in the classroom, parents expect us to focus on making sure their children have the skills
they need to thrive in college, university and the workplace. We continue to work with the BC Teachers’ Federation and other educational partners to phase in new curriculum and support teachers. What changes can you expect to see? For one, students are increasingly learning by doing, with more opportunities for handson experience. There is also new content, such as Aboriginal perspectives weaved throughout all grade levels and updated standards in math and sciences. I’ve toured many
schools throughout the province and it’s encouraging to see innovative teachers and students already benefiting from the new curriculum, for example: * Entrepreneurial high school students holding a fundraising campaign to purchase virtual reality technology. Their first project? A virtual reality roller coaster. * Cafeterias being used as collaborative classrooms as students teach each other how to code for apps and computer programs - proving learning happens anywhere, any time.
* A history class digging trenches to help understand a soldier’s experience during the First World War. In September 2016, K-9 curriculum will move beyond this year’s introduction and be implemented in all B.C. school districts. Also, this coming September the new grades 10-to-12 curriculum will be available for teachers to use on an optional basis. In September 2017, the full K-12 curriculum will be in place. We all have a role to play - parents, teachers, and education part-
ners. The work we do today will have a lasting effect for decades. Imagine what today’s students could be doing five, 10, 20 years from now. The curriculum is changing so young people get the best education possible, so they in turn can help support growing communities. B.C.’s continued strong, economic growth and fiscal discipline means that we can return dividends that make a real difference for B.C. students and parents.

2016 Honda Accord Overall: A mid-cycle refresh for one of North America’s topselling brands goes way beyond skin-deep. Drivetrain: A 2.4-litre fourcylinder and 3.5-litre V6 return unaltered; transmissions run the gamut, including manual, automatic and continuously variable, depending on engine and/ or body style. Most automakers normally tweak their vehicles after three or four years on the market. Honda, however, has taken a slightly more dramatic approach with Accord coupe and sedan. The noses, headlights, fog lights and LED taillights on its twoand four-door Accords appear influenced by the automaker’s
upscale Acura line and that goes double for the grille. The LED headlight pods installed on Touring models seem particularly Acura-influenced. The body itself has been reengineered to provide greater rigidity and the sedan’s (but not the coupe’s) hood is now made from aluminum instead of steel (for weight savings). Interior adjustments are subtler, but include a font change for the gauges (for easier reading) and a rearview camera is now standard. Most Accords also get a long-overdue splitfolding rear seat. Engine picks starting with a base 185-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder, while a 278-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 is optional in the EX-L and

Touring trims. Honda has also tweaked the optional continuously variable transmission’s operating efficiency so that it feels more like a geared automatic. Drivers can still choose the base six-speed manual gearbox in their four-cylinder sedans and coupes. The V6 sedan comes with a six-speed automatic transmission, exclusively, but the V6 coupe lets you pick a six-speed manual or automatic. Base LX sedans and LX-S coupes arrive with plenty of standard equipment, but moving up a step to the Sport sedan will get you the split-folding rear seat, seven-inch touch-screen, rear spoiler, beefier front brakes and 19-inch wheels. Organization aims to help dementia sufferers in the area and reduce the stigma attached to it.” The Dementia Friend campaign is the cornerstone of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, which runs until the end of January.
Becoming a Dementia Friend is easy, says Cameron. The process starts by signing up at DementiaFriends. ca. The next step is to understand five simple things about dementia: * It is not a natural part of aging. * It is not just about losing your memory. Dementia can affect thinking, communicating and doing everyday activities. * It is possible to live well with dementia. * There is more to a person than a diagnosis of dementia. * The Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s East Kootenay branch is here to help people with dementia and their care partners. That knowledge can easily translate into action at home and work, Cameron adds. The Society has supported people living with dementia for 35 years. One of its initiatives, First Link®, connects people affected by dementia with information, Society support services and programs such as Minds in Motion®, and dementia education sessions at any stage of the journey. Cranbrook residents can get more information by contacting the First Link® Dementia Helpline toll-free at 1-800-936-6033 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents can also contact Julie Cameron at jcameron@alzheimerbc.org and visit www. alzheimerbc.org. Here are some tips to help you when you are connecting with a person living with dementia: * Patience is key for dementia-friendliness. * Use respectful language. People living with dementia are not “sufferers” or “patients.” * Address the person with dementia, rather than those around them, when talking about their experience living with the disease. * Connect, don’t correct. Respond to feelings being shared. * Use precise language when describing actions or tasks. * Give directions slowly and clearly. * Focus on a person’s strengths and share tasks with them, like washing dishes or helping them to order at a coffee shop or restaurant.

The Barrow’s Goldeneye is just one example of a colourful waterfowl sighted in the annual Christmas Bird Count. submitted by Daryl Calder on behalf of Rocky Mountain Naturalists The first of three Christmas Bird Counts in the East Kootenay, was held on Friday, December 18th
in the Elk Valley at Fernie. About 18 birders from the surrounding area spent a mild, snowy day searching the woods, riverbanks, fields and back alleys. Evidently, well stocked bird feeders played an important role, at-
tracting a wide variety of birds. Due to mild weather, the low elevations had been free of snow and ice until a couple of days before the count. Normally, the lack of open water and bare ground tends to concentrate the birds

were stripped earlier in the fall. Winter finches like Common Redpolls, easily seen in October and November, now appear to have gone elsewhere to forage. We succeeded in finding 743 individuals representing 29 species,
including some Whitewinged Crossbills during ‘count week’. Barrow’s Goldeneye, with their brilliant yellow iris, are particularly attractive black and white diving ducks, often mixed with flocks of Com-

mon Goldeneye. This species was originally described from a population living in Iceland. It is however, primarily a duck of the western mountains of North America and can be found throughout most of the year in the East Kootenay. These birds forage underwater, eating aquatic insects, crustaceans, fish eggs and plant material, preferring not to compete with too many
insect-eating fish. Their breeding habitat consists of wooded lakes and ponds. Because much of it’s nesting is done in cavities found in mature trees, the Barrow’s Goldeneye is considered an arboreal bird species. The birds will also nest in burrows, protected sites on the ground and in nest boxes. Females return to the same breeding sites year after year and also tend to use
the same nesting sites. The males stay with their mate through the winter and defend their territory during the breeding season, then leave for the moulting site. Even though the pairs are apart for long periods of time over the summer, they reunite at the wintering areas. These ducks migrate in order to spend the winter in protected coastal waters or open inland waters. In par-

ticular, coastal estuaries provide excellent wintering and stopping places during migration. This is a quiet bird that generally makes vocalizations only during the breeding season, but, in flight, their wings make a low, whistling sound. Like the Common Goldeneye, Barrow’s are not too particular about holding on to their own offspring. A female may lay eggs in the nest of another Goldeneye or other species of cavity-nesting duck. Once the ducklings come out of the nest, about 2 days after hatching, the broods of different females often come together and are taken care of by a single female. The young ducklings are highly independent, feeding on their own and requiring little parental care. For a duck, Barrow’s are a long-lived species, often living 15 years or more, and populations appear fairly stable. At Elizabeth Lake, Cranbrook, Goldeneyes and their ducklings can be seen in the spring where they use nest boxes and natural cavities.

Anne Dora Jorgenson 1935 - 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Anne passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at East Kootenay Regional Hospital after a very short battle with cancer at the age of 80. Anne was born on December 21, 1935 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She moved to Lethbridge, Alberta in 1951 where she fell in love at first sight with her husband Gerry. They were married in 1961 and had their daughter a year later. They lived in several communities in Alberta, Yukon and BC, before settling down in Cranbrook in 1975. Anne worked for the Bank of Montreal and Scotiabank for many years before retiring in 1987. Anne's greatest love was her family and grandkids. She was a very caring and giving person. She especially enjoyed her Tuesday’s spent at the casino and dinner afterwards with her husband. Anne is survived by her husband Gerry and only daughter Tracy (Art) Salanski, grandkids Aaron (Alecia) and Kendall, brother-in-law Keith (Rita), many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Joe and Dora Picard and brother Emil. No funeral service will be held at Anne’s request.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the East Kootenay Foundation for Health. 13 - 24th Avenue North, Cranbrook, BC, V1C 3H9. We would also like to express our sincerest appreciation to the Doctors, Nurses at the EKRH for their care and compassion during her illness. Arrangements entrusted to Mcpherson Funeral Service Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

Discovering wall beds Also called “Murphy beds” or “retractable beds,” wall beds are available in many styles and configurations to satisfy a wide range of customer requirements. Keep reading to discover their many advantages. Wall beds can be installed vertically or laterally. Their main advantage is that they can be made to disappear into the wall whenever you like. Their practicality is especially appreciated by condo- and apartment dwellers, as well as homeowners with small guest bedrooms. That’s because wall beds allow the space normally intended for sleeping to be used for different purposes, such as work, study and hobbies. Most wall bed models are incorporated into a storage unit with drawers, desk top and cupboards. Sometimes sections are provided for storing a computer or printer and for connecting electronic devices. With a wall bed, people who work from home can quickly transform a bedroom into an office without their clients ever knowing. In addition, Murphy beds are perfect for little-used guest rooms, which can then be assigned new uses on a daily basis. And, if you think these transformations will be complicated, think again. Recent models are designed to require only minimal effort — sometimes just the push of a button — to close them. And you don’t even need to remove the bedding.

install enough lighting to be able to distinguish the most subtle colours. Who wants to realize — in the middle of an important meeting — that his navy blue tie is actually black? 5. Make room for a chair or even an armchair and at least one full length mirror so you can check your outfit on the spot — and feel like a movie star in your own home. 6. Make sure there is adequate ventilation in the room, especially if it is located near a bathroom. You definitely don’t want to end up with mouldy clothes. 7. If you’re a shoe addict, place your collection on a shelf or in open compartments in order to protect them. You’ll also be able to find the perfect pair for your outfit with one quick glance.
Why gamble with the rest when you can deal with the best?
n Are the insides of your windows covered with plastic from October to April? n Can the kids do their homework on the window frost? n Do you get a chill every time you pass a door or window opening and they are closed? n Do you have vented doors that are supposed to be solid? ...these are all great reasons to replace your existing windows and doors now!
