Some Kamloops business owners are hoping to cash in on a low loonie ANDREA KLASSEN STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com

The piece of Mission Flats property that used to house the Weyerhauser mill — shown here in a KTW file photo from 2008 — has a new owner.
Former Weyco site sells for $5.1 million CAM FORTEMS
STAFF REPORTER
cam@kamloopsthisweek.com
A Manitoba-based rail service company has purchased the most significant piece of industrial land on the market in Kamloops. The 36-hectare former Weyerhaeuser Co. sawmill site was bought for slightly less than $5.1 million by Cando Rail Services on Dec. 31.
CANDO RAIL SERVICES PURCHASED PROPERTY A company representative said Wednesday it will make a public statement later this week. Ron Ehrenholz, managing broker of Colliers International in Kamloops, confirmed the sale but declined to publicly discuss the purchaser. While the heavyindustrial property has been for sale since Weyerhaeuser closed
its Kamloops sawmill more than seven years ago, the fact it lacked an environmental certificate hampered marketing efforts. “Though it was on the market, that was always hanging over it,” Ehrenholz said. Weyerhaeuser obtained that certificate about a year and a half ago, which cleared the way for improved marketing, he said.
The property beside the Thompson River in Mission Flats was the largest piece of industrial land on the market in Kamloops. It has both water and rail access and is zoned for heavy industry. It was home to a sawmill since the 1960s. Weyerhaeuser shut the sawmill in 2008, putting 200 employees out of work. Weyerhaeuser sold
timber rights to West Fraser and Interfor and merged its North American pulp operations under Domtar Corp., which continues to operate its Kamloops pulp mill. Also sold with the sawmill property was Weyerhaeuser’s former Canadian head office building as well as Rabbit Island, a prominent feature in the Thompson River. See DETAILS, A10
s the dollar’s value continues to slip, Kamloops’ tourism industry is dreaming of a summer filled with American tourists. On Wednesday, the loonie fell below 70 cents U.S. for the second day in a row, a low unreached since 2003. At Tourism Kamloops, acting CEO Monica Dickinson said her organization is planning a marketing push to bring U.S. tourists over the boarder in early spring. “Obviously the price will be right for them to make their way north of the border to experience our fu and activities,” she said. The campaign will focus on mountain biking, local wineries, breweries and farm markets, and the spring golfing season. “What works well is golf,” she said. “We’ve been known to have early starts to our golf season, so that can happen late March, early April if the weather participates.” Dickinson said a pair of hockey events coming to the city in the first four months of the year should also attract visitors to the Tournament Capital. Hockey Day in Canada, set for Feb. 6, which includes an alumni game with former Western Hockey League and NHL players, will likely bring in-province visitors, Dickinson said.

More details on the KGHM Ajax mine should be available to the public next week. Senior communications strategist Robert Koopmans said the company will file its application for environmental review for its copper and gold mine south of Aberdeen on Monday. Once the application is filed, the approximately 18,000-page collection of studies and data on its effects will become public. KGHM has pledged to post “plain language” versions of its application online as well, which Koopmans said will be available Tuesday. The filing kicks off a 180day review of the application, including a 75-day public comment period. Koopmans said KGHM has tentatively scheduled a pair of public open houses on the application for Feb. 16 and Feb. 17. The company previously pushed back the filing date of its application from Jan. 4, citing requests by First Nations for more time to prepare for the review. Once the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office and Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency have reviewed the mine’s data, their conclusions will be forwarded to federal and provincial ministers who will decide whether the mine can go ahead.

Cheer Fund hauls in more than $57K for charities DALE BASS STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
When Michele Walker visited the KTW office earlier this week, she stopped and checked the front window. Steadily since last November, a thermometer painted there has recorded the growth of the Christmas Cheer Fund and her agency, the Y Women’s Emergency Shelter, is one of five benefiting from it this year. Walker said she was delighted to see the final tally had hit more than $57,000 this year, thanks to so many Kamloopsians who contributed to the annual fundraiser. Publisher Kelly Hall said he was “extremely happy to see the community’s positive response to this year’s campaign” and is delighted

to be able to help the charities chosen this year. The women’s shelter is a legacy beneficiary; the committee overseeing the Cheer fund decided to designate it that way to reflect the wishes of the man who originally brought the fundraiser to Kamloops, sports reporter Gregg
Drinnan. When he ran the campaign in Regina, money raised went to the womens’ shelters there and, when he moved to Kamloops, he ensured the Y shelter was one of the charities chosen. The committee also chose the Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre, Family Tree Family Resource Centre, Sensational Soups and New Life Community Kamloops, formerly known as the New Life Mission. Each will receive a cheque later this month after the Christmas Cheer Fund committee — KTW representatives Andrea Klassen and Linda Skelly, United Way Thompson-Nicola Cariboo staffer Amber Harding and Jim Doan of Western Karate Academy — meet to finalize the amounts.

First Nations ‘leader’ avoids criminal record after violent attack on Good Samaritan Gregory Taypotat kicked in the face a man who was trying to help him, leaving a wound that required eight stitches TIM PETRUK STAFF REPORTER tim@kamloopsthisweek.com
A self-described First Nations leader will avoid a criminal record after kicking a Good Samaritan in the face — causing a wound that required eight stitches to heal — as long as he apologizes to his victim and completes 30 hours of community service. Gregory Taypotat pleaded guilty on Tuesday in Kamloops provincial court to one count of assault causing bodily harm. The 39-year-old was charged after an incident in Whispering Pines on May 15 last year. Court heard Taypotat was drunk and he became involved in an argument with his girlfriend. As his girlfriend attempted to drive away, Taypotat grabbed her truck and eventually fell to the ground. He then stood up and fled into a field. Taypotat’s girlfriend was concerned he might be injured, so she called two friends to help her find him in the dark field. The three then took to the field and found Taypotat. “[The friend] tells him that he has his Level 3 first aid,” said Crown prosecutor Danika Heighes. “Mr. Taypotat doesn’t want any help. He tells them to leave him alone.” Taypotat then tackled the would-be Good Samaritan and a struggle ensued, culminating in a kick to the head. “Mr. Taypotat kicked him in the face intentionally, causing a gash under his eye that needed

eight stitches,” Heighes said. Representing himself, Taypotat said he is a leader in his community and added he attended residential school in his native Saskatchewan for a short time as a child. Taypotat said a criminal record would affect his status as a leader, but he accepted responsibility for the violent attack. “We’re all given choices in this world,” he said. “You either make the right decision or the wrong decision. It’s nobody’s fault but mine.” Heighes had been seeking a fine between $500 and $1,000. Kamloops provincial court Judge Roy Dickey sided with Taypotat. “He admits to the circumstances, he is remorseful and he is insightful,” the judge said. “If he has a criminal record, it will affect his position in his community as a leader. That designation will be removed from him. “Mr. Taypotat is the type of person who needs to be a leader in his community.” Dickey gave Taypotat a conditional discharge and a one-year probation term, meaning he won’t have a criminal record if he stays out of trouble for 12 months. Conditions of his probation require Taypotat to abstain from drugs and alcohol and complete 30 hours of community service, as well as apologize to the man he attacked. He will also have to surrender a sample of his DNA to a national criminal database.

Faculty at TRU set for job action
LOOK FOR DETAILS IN UPCOMING ISSUES OF
DALE BASS STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
Although both sides have agreed to mediation, faculty at Thompson Rivers University will take job action in the morning. Tom Friedman, president of the TRU Faculty Association (TRUFA), would not specify the TOM FRIEDMAN action other than to say it will not disrupt students or classes but will have an impact on administration. “The university will be open and students should plan for a regular day,” Friedman said. The action will happen at 8 a.m., the earliest the union can do so after serving the university administration and the province’s labour board with the requisite 72 hours’ notice. After doing so on Monday, TRUFA and TRU administration agreed to bring in mediator Mark Brown to try and bring the two sides to a resolution. Bargaining began in February 2015 but, earlier this week, Friedman and TRU vice-president finance Matt Milovick said the sides remain far apart. They also agreed the way the institution is run is a key issue, with TRUFA wanting more say and administration describing the union’s tabled contract language as demanding concessions from it. Mediation was suggested by administration. It will start on Friday. In November, TRUFA members voted 80 per cent in favour of job action, including going on strike. Faculty has only taken a strike vote three times since 1974 and came close to walking out once in 1998.

The IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship is expected to boost local tourism numbers for 2016, attracting visitors from across North America and Europe.
Locals expected to spend more dollars at home From page A1
There’s also the IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship in April, which will bring teams from North America, Europe and Asia to Kamloops. “With the Women’s World Cup hockey championships being an international event, I would expect to see increased visitations from the Americans as it relates to their team’s game,” Dickinson said. Hospitality consultant Bryce Herman said he expects restaurants and hotels in the city to benefit most from a sag-
ging dollar, since tourism industry wisdom says 70 cents of every dollar spent by visitors tends to go to accommodations and meals. He’s also expecting local tourists on “staycations” to play a major role in any increases seen locally. “If I’ve got to look at a 40 cent or a 45 cent dollar exchange, I’m less likely to say, ‘Let’s pop over to Blaine [Wash.],’” he said, noting Canadians headed abroad are usually paying more than the exchange for US dollars, thanks to bank and credit card fees. “If you travel at home
your dollar is worth a dollar.” Henry Small, organizer of Kamloops’ popular summer concert series Music in the Park, said larger crowds of out-oftown visitors might turn up at the evening gigs thanks to the dollar. Small said because Music in the Park brings in mainly Canadian acts he’s not worried about the dollar’s effects on bringing in talent, though booking American performers could become more costly. “I’ll have to wait and see but I don’t think there will be too much of an impact,” he said.
City seeking members for committees The City of Kamloops is looking for people to appoint to four of its committees for two-year terms. Advisory committees on diversity, seniors and youth,
children and families require additional members, as does the Mayor’s Advisory Committee for Persons with Disabilities. Each meets four times a
year and appointments are for two-year terms. Those interested can contact community development co-ordinator Ben Chobater at bchoabter@kamloops.ca,
250-828-3582. Submit a brief resume and cover letter with background and interest in the area. The deadline is Friday, Jan. 22.

An investigation is underway following the sudden death at a Kamloops business on Monday morning. Emergency crews were called to Inland Glass and Aluminum at about 8 a.m. Reegan Joachim Winofsky, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene. RCMP Cpl. Cheryl Bush said the death was not suspicious in nature and police have handed the investigation to a coroner. WorkSafeBC senior manager Trish Knight Chernecki told KTW her office is also looking into the death. “We had a prevention officer attend this morning,” she said. The B.C. Cash earmarked for cancer fight DALE BASS
STAFF REPORTER
dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
Half of every tax dollar collected goes to health care, the premier said — and 3 million of those dollars are now headed to the personalized oncogenomics (POG) program run by the B.C. Cancer Foundation. Dr. Janessa Laskin, who runs the program with Dr. Marco Marra, explained POG involves sequencing the DNA inside a cancer. A multi-disciplinary team looks at the sequencing to identify “what is driving the person’s cancer and do we have a drug to treat it?” For Jen Strack, that meant receiving a drug for her lung cancer she might otherwise not have been prescribed. Strack, who took part in a press confer-
ence on Tuesday with Premier Christy Clark, Health Minister Terry Lake and doctors and scientists working on the project, was a nonsmoker diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer at age 41. When conventional treatment didn’t work, she entered a clinical trial that also failed. Acceptance into POG led to doctors identifying a specific aspect of her cancer through her DNA sequencing and giving her a drug to treat it. Since diagnosis in 2013, Strack said, her tumours — which had spread to her liver — have reduced. Laskin said the work “is not about cures but is about finding a tolerable drug that can control the cancer for a longer period of time.” The program began in 2013 and has worked with 350 patients, treating more

than 50 types of cancer. Plans are to expand to 2,000 people in the next five years. Requirements for acceptance include having an incurable cancer, not having had much chemotherapy and be living and being treated in B.C. Pediatric cancer patients are included. The money will help expand the program; the average cost for a patient accepted into POG is $27,000; sequencing just one genome costs $3,500. Laskin said POG’s approach is not being done anywhere else and has been drawing cancer researchers and doctors to B.C. to study what is being done here.
BUILDING PERMITS
Permit values exceeded expectation in 2015 ANDREA KLASSEN STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
While falling slightly short of 2014, building permit values in the city of Kamloops still exceeded expectations in 2015. Director of development and engineering services Marvin Kwiatkowski said the city issued permits worth $179 million over the past year, compared to $191 million the year before. “We’d predicted about $160 million, so we came in fairly strong,” Kwiatkowski said. The decrease in value comes mainly due to a lack of high-value commercial and industrial projects over the past year. Commercial and industrial permits account for only $52 million in permit value, compared to $76 million in 2015. “Of course of that $76 million you had the hospital project, which was pretty substantial,” said Kwiatkowski. “That was $45 million or so, so that was fairly substantial. We didn’t have any projects of that magnitude this year.” Residential permit values, meanwhile, increased in 2015, coming in just above $120 million compared to $106 million the year before. Unit totals were also up, at 463 compared to 418 in 2014, with multi-family projects driving the increase. Kwiatkowski said he expects to see about $160

million in permits issued in 2016, with somewhat lower residential unit numbers. While interest in larger multi-family projects remains strong, Kwiatkowski said the adoption of the new BC Building code last year likely led to an increase in housing construction beyond the norm, as homebuilders who had secured more permits than usual ahead of the change began construction.

TRANSPARENCY FROM GOVERNMENT
I
t’s become a go-to phrase for all levels of government — local, provincial and federal. When faced with fallout from an unpopular decision — or simply dissatisfaction with the way that a certain sequence of events shakes out — politicians and bureaucrats seem to all have the same default position: “In hindsight, we could have done a better job with communication.” The fact is, no matter how large or small the public-relations budget, a culture that keeps taxpayers in the loop on evolving decisions is something that comes from the top down. Suspicion of politicians and bureaucrats runs so rampant these days that it is far from wise policy for anyone in government to allow such a situation to continue — particularly when much criticism could be averted simply by taking a more inclusive approach. Naturally, in the process of governing or administrating, there is some information that is sensitive for reasons of confidentiality or legality, which cannot be shared indiscriminately. The public, generally speaking, is not asking for this. Nor is the public asking for glossy brochures, dazzling photos or press releases giddy with spin. Straightforward summary of progress on issues would be good, however. As well, we would welcome a sense that those in office believe public consultation is about more than the legally required meetings. It may come as news to some, but we don’t elect politicians or hire bureaucrats to act in a vacuum. It is called “public office” and “public service” for a reason. — Black Press

Moving on from council debacle
D
enis Walsh did some heavy reading during the Christmas holiday and now has a better grasp on how meetings should be run. It’s a good thing he bought a copy of Robert’s Rules of Order, since it is one of several governance platforms city council apparently relies upon to run its meetings. Here’s hoping others borrow it to peruse so that the mess created last month when Walsh tried to stop demolition of the marble-clad building that has been part of Kamloops history doesn’t happen again. The councillor made the first step in fixing the mumblejumble motion he presented with the intention of saving the building but which ended up simply stopping any discussion on it for a year. It certainly wasn’t council at its finest, nor was the immediate aftermath when both Walsh and Mayor Peter Milobar seemed pretty unhappy with each other. This week, Walsh crafted two motions with inspiration, guidance and a new understanding of the rules, courtesy of his reading. At the next council meeting, he’s hoping his colleagues will support him and rescind the badly worded December motion and then agree with his intent to keep the building until everyone can decide on a real plan for its future.
DALE BASS
Street
LEVEL I hope he succeeds. I’d like to see something go in what is now a beautiful, but empty, building with history in the city. As someone who was in favour of putting a performingarts centre at the corner of Seymour Street and Fourth Avenue — even though I was never really clear on just what the vision of that centre entailed — ideally I’d like to see some iteration of that dream become reality. Walsh says he’s been in discussions with some people who know how to create such centres for price tags significantly lower than the one his council floated out to us. One of the concepts would see the interior of the structure renovated to house studios, work areas, some retail outlets — the kinds of things that would bring ongoing energy to such a facility. The theatre would be the only addition and would rise from the south side of the building. And, yes, there would
be a parkade. It sounds perfect. Renovating makes sense and done right would be significantly less costly. But how about considering some other ideas? Walsh’s issue, one that should be of concern to all of us, is keeping the downtown area vibrant, alive, invigorated and appealing. Some businesses are doing their part; most of the outlets on the 200-block of Victoria Street are now opening on Sundays and business is brisk. It would be great to see that kind of thinking move farther down the street. Even the parking situation has improved — and, to be frank, it might be wise of the downtown merchants and their representatives to stop saying there’s not enough parking. Hotel 540 has monthly spots available now that the casino has relocated. Maybe I’m just lucky but I don’t have a problem finding a parking spot downtown. Sure, it might mean walking a block to my destination but there’s nothing wrong with that. And, once the clinical-services building is complete at Royal Inland Hospital, those additional parking stalls below it should also alleviate the perceived parking problem downtown. Walsh’s goal is good. He wants to preserve and grow the downtown — and now, he’s tabled the motions that might see that happen. dale@kamloopsthisweek.com

YOUR OPINION LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
CITY MISHANDLED EMPLOYEE FIRING Editor: As a taxpayer, I wish to note my dismay and disgust with the fashion the City of Kamloops has handled the firing/grievance of Joe Cupello. As outlined in the arbitrator’s decision, it is incredible the human resources department could be so incompetent as to not follow or know the rules sur-

prior to commencement of the actions to be taken. Not only do Mr. Cupello’s actions (in this case inactions) bring a discredit upon the City of
Kamloops, but the human resources department also falls into this category. I have not seen anything in these discussions with regard to the atrocious amount of ongoing costs to the taxpayers for this arbitration. Mr. Trawin states, “Taxpayers expect you’re doing the job you are paid to do.”
I have not read anything about any discipline being taken against those that did not do their job (bungling this matter) and allowing Mr. Cupello to still be on the payroll. Mr. Trawin’s further statement — “It was a past practice to help out the union” — is just a load of nonsense. Does he think the
taxpayers are really that stupid? If so, he should be tossed along with the human resources department. A union has their own supposedly competent business agents, lawyers, etc. That’s why they won out in this case. We expect and deserve much better than this. Chuck McKenzie Kamloops
REWARDED FOR FLOUTING LAWS
SPANKING KIDS IS GOOD PARENTING Editor: Re: (‘Spare the rod, avoid a criminal charge?’): No, spanking should not be against the law. We have too many laws and bylaws infringing on people’s lives already. If a kid throwing a tantrum in a supermarket or a concert needs a smack on his behind, so be it. As far as I’m concerned, that’s good parenting. Phil Paul Kamloops
THANK YOU FOR HELPING Editor: Thank you to the young lady who took time out of her day (on the morning of Jan. 5) to assist me in clearing snow from my driveway. This was very kind and appreciated. Thank you again. Ron Finigan
Editor: Re: Gloria Turriff’s letter of Jan. 5 (‘Pledge allegiance to our queen’) regarding an immigrant who refused to take the oath of allegiance to Queen Elizabeth during a citizenship ceremony. Turriff is to be commended for shedding light on this issue. Here’s a person who shunned our country’s rules before he had even received his Canadian citizenship and, in doing so, was still granted this privilege by the presiding judge The accompanying picture I saw on this story
showed the judge smiling, with his hand on the individual’s shoulder, as much as to say, “No big deal, it’s just a formality.” Another formality should have been if he continued to refuse to fully comply with the citizenship requirements, he be put on the first plane back to his home country.

Cando Rail’s services include car storage, mechanical service, engineering and track services as well as trans-loading between truck and rail car. Ehrenholz said any purchaser of the former
Weyerhaeuser site could apply to subdivide the large property if it doesn’t need the entire lot. Cando employs about 400 workers, mainly in the Prairies. Venture Kamloops executive director Jim Anderson said he’s awaiting
a planned announcement by the purchaser. He said the site has potential to be a job generator. As for the site providing 200-plus jobs again, Anderson said the prospect seems uncertain. “Large industrial operations just don’t start up.”
DEVELOPMENT OF A PEST MANAGEMENT PLAN Pest Management Plan: BC Hydro Power Line Corridors 2016-2021
The use of pesticides is intended within the area to which the Pest Management Plan (PMP) applies. The purpose of the proposed PMP is to control vegetation under, above and near BC Hydro’s power lines in order to maintain the safe and reliable delivery of electricity to our customers. This plan applies to all areas of British Columbia where BC Hydro manages its transmission and distribution system and associated power line corridors, access roads and helipads. The proposed duration of the PMP is from April 2016 to April 2021. Vegetation incompatible with the operation of the power system will be controlled using: physical (manual brushing, mowing, girdling, grooming, pruning, tree removal), cultural (compatible land use), biological (release of parasitic insects to control invasive plants), and chemical (herbicide application) techniques, or any combination of these methods. The active ingredients and trade names of the herbicides proposed for use under this plan include: ○ aminocyclopyrachlor and metsulfuron-methyl – Navius or equivalent ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○
aminopyralid – Milestone or equivalent aminopyralid and metsulfuron-methyl – ClearView or equivalent aminopyralid, metsulfuron-methyl, and fluroxypyr – Sightline or equivalent aminopyralid, metsulfuron-methyl and triclopyr – Clearview Brush or equivalent Chondrostereum purpureum – Chontrol or equivalent clopyralid – Lontrel or equivalent diflufenzopyr and dicamba – Distinct, Overdrive, or equivalent glyphosate – Vantage, Vision or equivalent imazapyr – Arsenal Powerline or equivalent metsulfuron-methyl – Escort or equivalent picloram and 2,4-D – Aspect or equivalent triclopyr – Garlon products or equivalent 2,4-D – LV700 or equivalent
Adjuvant products may also be combined on occasion with an herbicide to improve its effectiveness, such as: nonylphenoxy polyethoxy ethanol – Agral 90, paraffinic oils – Gateway, octadec-9-enoic acid as methyl and ethyl esters – Hasten NT, or siloxylated polyether – Xiameter or equivalents. The proposed methods for applying herbicides include: cut surface, basal bark, backpack foliar (low pressure spray), mechanical foliar (boom, nozzle, powerhose, or wick), or injection (hack and squirt, lance or syringe) techniques. A draft copy of the proposed PMP is available at bchydro.com/pestplanforcorridors. Alternatively, it’s available in person at 6911 Southpoint Drive, Burnaby; 1401 Kalamalka Lake Road, Vernon; 18475 128 Street, Surrey; 400 Madsen Road, Nanaimo; 3333 22 Avenue, Prince George. BC Hydro, the applicant for the proposed PMP, is located at 6911 Southpoint Drive, Burnaby, B.C., V3N 4X8. Trudeau looks to speed up plans THE CANADIAN PRESS
OTTAWA — The Trudeau government is “actively considering’’ speeding up promised investments in infrastructure in a bid to stimulate Canada’s rapidly deteriorating economy. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised during last fall’s election campaign to pump an additional $60 billion over 10 years into infrastructure projects. But less than half that money — $17.4 billion — was earmarked to flow during the Liberals’ first mandate. The platform committed to spending an extra $5 billion for each of the first two years and $3.45 billion in each of the next two years. However, The Canadian Press has learned the government is now looking at moving up the spending schedule, pushing the money out faster in response to worsening
economic conditions. Commodity prices have continued to slide, the dollar has nosedived and already sluggish economic growth has slowed to a crawl in the three months since Trudeau won election on a platform focused on stimulating the economy and improving the lot of middle class Canadians. The details of any new infrastructure spending will be unveiled in the federal budget, likely sometime in mid- to late March. The deteriorating situation has already forced the Liberals to rethink their pledge to run up deficits of no more than $10 billion in each of the first three years of their mandate. Trudeau has downgraded that promise to a goal. While they may yet have to scale back some of their other pricey campaign promises, Trudeau and Finance Minister Bill Morneau have doubled down on the infrastructure spending, arguing that the worsening economic picture only reinforces the need to stimulate growth. “There has just never been a better time to make targeted investments to support economic growth in this country,’’ Morneau said during a prebudget tour stop in Montreal. Last week, Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz also weighed in, calling infrastructure spending an “important ingredient’’ in economic growth. Sources say the Liberals are looking at speeding up infrastructure spending — “actively considering’’ it, in the words of one insider — but they want to ensure they go beyond the gazebos, park upgrades, public washrooms and beautification projects that were funded in Ontario’s cottage country in advance of the 2010 G8 summit.

hen Merlyn Horton was a kid, “gaming” had a different meaning. “It was basketball and hoops,” she said. “I was around when Pong came out. I was Ms. Pac-Man champion in the ‘80s.” These days, by the time kids complete high school, some will have spent as much time playing videogames like Halo or Call of Duty as in a classroom, a significant portion of their attention that comes with both positive and negative impacts. “Gaming is huge,” Horton said. The Mission-based con-
sultant will be in Kamloops to discuss parenting in the digital era as part of Literacy in Kamloops’ Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week, which is from Jan. 23 to Jan. 30. Her youth outreach background led to the creation of the Safe Online Outreach Society, which is based on the belief children who spend time online need informed adults who know the risks and opportunities of online environments. In November, the American Academy of Pediatrics published research suggesting children now have almost universal exposure to mobile media devices, regardless of income, due to decreasing costs, marketing strategies and subsidies by cellular service providers. It said nearly half of chil-
dren under age one used a mobile device daily to play games, watch videos or use apps, with that percentage increasing to 77 per cent in two-year-olds. It also noted concern over the number of young children with their own mobile devices because little is known about how children’s independent activity on mobile devices affects their cognitive, social and emotional development. Horton said people are only beginning to see evidence and aren’t fully aware of the effects on this generation. It’s up to parents to try and understand how things like gaming develop social and language skills, build community and help kids understand “epic meaning”, but also how it opens kids up to online harassment,

GAME exposure to violence and explicit images and normalizing online behaviour into the real world. It can be daunting for parents, Horton said. “Young people now have a place to go to in the world that parents don’t have a lot of experience in,” she said. In her upcoming presentation, she will advise parents to manage screen time and set up online codes of conduct. She will also provide conversation starters to discuss online activities with kids. “It can be for the techno-intimidated,” Horton said. “It’s not about them knowing the technology.” The free presentation will be held at Henry Grube, located at 245 Kitchener Cres., from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 28. It will focus on early childhood but will also be appli-
cable to school-aged kids. For those who can’t make it, here are a few more tips: • Manage screen time: “New research out is showing that it’s affecting social emotional learning,” Horton said. “It’s taking the place of daydreaming. It’s taking the place of random conversations with strangers. It’s taking the place of having to self-soothe our anxiety without picking up a device and getting positive reinforcement with our friends.” • Address technology, speak with kids: “It’s important we engage and we engage immediately,” Horton said. “We have to understand this tiger we’ve let loose in our kids’ bedroom.” • Don’t cave to pressure: “We’ve paid attention to Internet safety. have to get specific about parenting, not just caving to the fact that there’s a lot of pressure from children . . . river cruise. The trip is valued at $10,000. “I had been friends with Jann Bailey for many years and, when I bought my ticket, I held my finger up to the sky and asked for her help to win,” McDougall said of the former KAG executive director who died last year. “She sure helped, I’d
say,” McDougall said. “I am going to be taking a life-long friend of mine with me on this trip. It will be the best trip we have ever taken together.” The lottery is a significant fundraiser for the gallery and funds raised go to supporting exhibitions and programs. Scotiabank selling tickets and matching funds.
The bank added $7,100 via the 71 $100 tickets it sold. Vacation lottery sponsors are Kamloops This Week, Scotiabank, AMAWaterways, Travelwise, WestKey, B100 Radio, CFJCTV and New Wave Advertising. Tickets for the 2016 lottery will go on sale the first week of August.

WolfPack woes HEAD COACH HENNELLY LEFT SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS
ADAM WILLIAMS
STAFF REPORTER
adam@kamloopsthisweek.com
Pat Hennelly would love to put his finger on it. In the midst of what he called “one of the more frustrating years that I’ve been here, the 11-year head coach would love to have a tangible explanation for what has kept wins, for the most part, at a distant point on the horizon. At the start of the season, Hennelly expected the 20152016 WolfPack men’s volleyball team to win. He expected the roster to be one of the best to ever take the court at Thompson Rivers University. He expected the club to be led by a 22-year-old Brad Gunter, a perennial allstar and former Sport BC and Kamloops Sports Council university athlete of the year, junior national team member and Canada West and CIS MVP, who was entering his senior year. But, 14 matches in, none of that has happened. The club has struggled to a 4-10 record. Gunter has been good, but not dominant. The problems are intangible and confusing. The WolfPack is one, maybe two, losses from missing the postseason for the first time since 2012-2013. So, what’s the prob-

lem at the Tournament Capital Centre? “I wish I knew, to tell you the truth, Hennelly told KTW, the latest blow a pair of losses against the Mount Royal Cougars of Calgary on the weekend. In fairness, the Pack played without Gunter — who missed the weekend due to academic issues. The club will play two matches, now of far greater importance, against the Saskatchewan Huskies this weekend at the TCC — at 7:45 p.m. on Friday and 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, follow-
ing women’s matches between the same schools each night. TRU’s women’s squad is 6-8 and fighting for a playoff spot. “As a coach, it’s hard not to blame yourself, Hennelly said. “I believe the talent is here, I believe the ability is here and, the way the league has rolled out this year, it would have been a great year because a team like Calgary, who I think we’re very close to, is looking to be in the top three this year. “That’s hard to watch as well, knowing, how far away are we from a team like
Calgary? Not very far, if you look at personnel. But, the wins have not come, maybe won’t come. Thompson Rivers has swept just one weekend series in the 2015-2016 campaign — a November set against the Brandon Bobcats — and has a five-game losing streak to its credit in the first half. The post-season berth on the skyline has become increasingly blurry as the season has progressed — it might now be more a mirage than reality. See WE’VE, A18

BANNING CHANTS AN IDIOTIC DECISION
T
hey’ve thrown up a brick in the Badger State. Let’s hope pieces don’t land closer to home in Kamloops. The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) should be taken to Kangaroo Hardcourt for its decision to ban oh-so-hurtful chants such as “Air-ball! Air-ball at high-school basketball games. Are you kidding me? I’m not going to censor what comedian George Carlin said when he used the word “pussification to describe situations such as this because that’s what I’m railing against here — suppressing in order not to offend. Other phrases on the WIAA donot-chant list are “scoreboard, “you can’t do that, “fundamentals, “there’s a net there, “sieve, “we can’t hear you and “season’s over. They’re not racist. They’re not homophobic. They’re not crude. These are the type of chants that help create electric high-school environments and, contrary to the assertion of the WIAA, they don’t represent “unsporting behaviour. Yes, it’s taunting and, sure, it’s a form of disrespect, but these repetitive, rhythmic shouts exist outside of the normal world, in a sporting bubble. They have two functions — they’re fun for home spectators and they’re meant to put the visitors off their game. That’s called home-court advantage, isn’t it? (We saw something similar to this close to home in the summer when the Vernon Tigers banned noisemakers from Kal Tire Place, a policy aimed directly at silencing visiting Kamloops Venom supporters. That, too, was ridiculous.) Mental toughness is a quality every athlete should be striving for and what better way to test that trait than by jacking up a three ball, missing the rim entirely and hear-

ing it from hostile fans? Are you going to shrivel up and refuse to shoot again? If you do, that’s a coaching moment. Hit the gym, blast loud speakers to simulate crowd noise and shoot 100 times from beyond the arc. Try to learn how to handle the heat. Next time out, don’t let them get to you. ‘We’ve done a lot of soul searching’ From A17
KTW FILE PHOTO
Pat Hennelly, head coach of the TRU WolfPack men’s volleyball team, has piloted one of the school’s most-successful athletics programs for 11 years. It will take a minor miracle for the Pack to reach the playoffs this season.
“It’s pretty tough now,” Hennelly said. “I kind of crunched the numbers and I think there’s going to be ties at, potentially, 12 and 13 [wins], but we’ve lost a lot of [matches] 0-3. “We didn’t have great tiebreakers last year and we have some worse performances this year, in terms of getting swept. I’m not going to look at tiebreakers until we get some wins — we can’t suffer one more loss.” Hennelly was in a similar position with his team last season. After starting the campaign 0-7, Thompson Rivers entered the holiday break with a 5-11 record and rattled off eight victories in eight matches to sneak into the post-season in the new year. This season, though, he said the team has a different feel — losses can no longer
viduals and, some of them, between coaches. I think those things aren’t as magnified when you’re winning. “Do I think there’s something deep here? No. But, again, when you’re a coach and you’re in this situation, I almost feel like I’m spending too much time thinking about it.” Hennelly stopped short of deeming his club spoilers, a moniker reserved for those no longer in playoff contention. But, without a win at the TCC this weekend, that’s what the Pack will become. “I want to stay optimistic and we’re certainly — given other teams have struggled — we’re not out of this. But, it’s tough to go look past this weekend,” Hennelly said. “We’re not in the spoiler position yet, but we have to just win.”
be chalked up to a string of injuries, to bad luck, to struggling without their emotional leader. This year, the issues have been communication and consistency, confidence and interpersonal issues. “We’ve done a lot of soul searching,” Hennelly said. “It’s hard because, with any team dynamics, there’s interpersonal relationships. Now, they’re always magnified when you’re losing, they’re always magnified when there’s pressure. We’ve had these team meetings where things have come to surface between indi-

Sun Peaks ice rink delayed, not ditched STAFF REPORTER
adam@kamloopsthisweek.com
Sun Peaks is again looking ahead in its hopes of bringing an NHL-sized ice rink to the mountain resort. In May, KTW reported Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality had plans to begin construction of an outdoor hockey rink in July, with eyes to opening the new facility for the fall of 2015. But, the sheet has yet to surface. The opening date was pushed back later that year, when concerns were expressed about the proposed site for the new facility. “In speaking with a variety of people, and certainly the knowledge of the mayor and council, they just thought from a walkability standpoint and location, that it just was a little too far out of town,” said Rob Bremner, chief administrative officer of the municipality. “Once we have a new location, it will get built there. We’re just in the process of working through that right now.” The new ice rink will take the place of the current sheet at Sun Peaks, a worn-out
venue which measures 50 feet by 100 feet and sits a short walk from either the base of the Morrisey Express chairlift or the resort’s village. The new surface is expected to measure 85 feet wide and 200 feet long — the size of an NHL rink — and will be refrigerated by an ice plant purchased from a disassembled rink in Indiana. The boards surrounding the surface are from Portland’s Moda Center — formerly known as the Rose Garden — the primary home of the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks and the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers. Both the boards and the refrigeration system are already on the mountain. Originally, the municipality had planned to build the facility on acquired Crown land, which Bremner said sat around “the next bend” from the old rink. A new site hasn’t yet been finalized, but the CAO said the municipality hopes to have a new plan nailed down in the next four to six weeks, with hopes of summer construction and a fall 2016 opening. “There’s a couple

sites that are being talked about that are both closer to the village,” he said, without formally identifying the prospective locations. Aside from a change in placement, the original plan for the outdoor rink remains in place. It is estimated to come with a price tag of between $400,000 and $500,000, on top of the $100,000 the municipality has already invested in the boards and ice plant. hasn’t yet received confirmation, it hopes between 90 and 95 per cent of the price tag will be covered by provincial and federal government funding, including gas tax monies. The remaining expenses will be covered by resort municipality initiative funds. The rink isn’t pegged as a revenue-generating initiative, but Bremner hopes a more consistent surface — maintained by a refrigera-
tion plant, rather than Mother Nature — will bring the facility to a break-even point, with skating fees and rentals covering the cost of operations. “The idea is just to upgrade the current facility,” Bremner told KTW last year. “There’s a lot of times throughout the year, when the sun starts beating down, that it melts. This allows it to be consistent and available when we say it’s available.”
The boards that used to surround the ice surface at the Rose Garden, now the Moda Center, in Portland, will be used at a new rink in Sun Peaks.

Seven Kamloops Rattlers played for Team B.C. at the Adrenaline Challenge Lacrosse Showcase Event, which wrapped up on Jan. 3 in San Diego. Ryan Dergousoff and Kordell Primus competed in the under18 Elite Division at the field-lacrosse tournament, while Jackson Steed, Connor Barrett, Jax Anderson, Caleb Campbell and Millan Webster toiled in the under-13 division. The under-13 squad posted a 6-0 record and won gold with a 10-9 victory over the So-Cal Express in the championship game. Barrett, team cocaptain, played the hero, scoring the winning goal with less than 10 seconds to play in the gold-medal tilt. Steed and Barrett each earned Hard Hat Awards in separate games for outstanding individual performances. The under-18 squad — which will compete at the Canadian Field Lacrosse Championships in Winnipeg in September — posted a 2-4 record at the tourney in San Diego. Selection camps for both teams were held in early October and practices took place in Langley each weekend until the tournament.

Follow trail through B.C. history
START AT FORT LANGLEY, CONTINUE ALONG SALMON RIVER, SPOT DOGWOODS TERESA CLINE
SPECIAL TO KTW
teresathetraveler.ca
I
f you are interested in British Columbia history, the Fort to Fort trail is the walking trail for
you. In 1827, James McMillan and his staff built the first Fort Langley in what is now Derby Reach Regional Park. It was from there they began to trade furs, develop a farm and pack locally harvested salmon and cranberries for export overseas. Having decided the location of this fort was not optimal, they abandoned it and built a new one in 1839 which has been preserved and is now a national historic site. The trail starts at the Fort Langley National Historic Site, where there is plenty of free parking. From there, head through the town and past the old Langley railway station. Continue on the trail, which runs along the Salmon River where the early settlers and First Nations people fished. There are plenty of sitting areas, docks and lookouts along the river to enjoy the gorgeous view. The path is lined with dogwoods, our provincial flower, and informational signs on
Langley’s natural and human history. The trail then leaves the river and follows a road lined with expensive mansions before winding into Derby Regional Park, where you will pass the location of the oldest Stó:lō First Nations village, which was wiped out by smallpox. You will also pass the location of the original Fort Langley and Houston House Farm, which was built in 1909.
HOW TO GET THERE:
From Hope, take the Trans-Canada Highway west for 105 kilometres. Follow the 232nd Street exit north off Highway 1. Fort Langley National Historic Site is six kilometres north of the highway. Follow the beaver signs along 232nd Street until you reach the stop sign at Glover Road. Turn right and continue into the village of Fort Langley. Turn right on Mavis Avenue at the flashing lights just before the railway tracks. The parking lot is located at the end of the street.
DID YOU KNOW?
• Much of what is now the village of Fort Langley had long been de facto property of the Hudson’s Bay Company.
• The first railway built through Langley was the Fraser Valley branch of the Great Northern Railway, opened in 1909. • In 1858, James Houston became the first independent farmer in the Fraser Valley. He established a dairy farm near Fort Langley with 12 head of cattle he singlehandedly drove from Oregon. He also shipped potatoes, carrots, peas, cranberries and helped start a farming tradition that would endure for more than 100 years. • From 1827 to 1828, Fort Langley exported 940 beaver pelts and 250 otter pelts. • The decision to move the fort was based on soil. The poor soil around the original fort led to farming problems and low crop yields so another farm was established farther away on Langley Prairie. Once the new farm covered about 12 hectares and required more time to operate it, it was decided to leave the old fort, which was in poor condition by this point, and build a new fort closer to the farm.
Travel west to the Fort Langley National Historic Site to learn about British Columbia. Pack a lunch and stop at the sitting areas, docks and lookouts along the river and enjoy the view.

Obituaries & In Memoriam Kuzyk, Edith Harriett
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Mrs. Edith Harriett Kuzyk on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 from Jackson house in Ashcroft at the age of 83 years.
STEVIE (EDWARD WILLIAM) STEPHENSON
MARY (MOLLY) WILD
October 30, 1914- January 5, 2016
Molly passed away January 8, 2016, with family by her side, at the age of 87 due to complications from pneumonia. Molly was born August 8, 1928 in Scotland. She moved to Ocean Falls, BC, Canada in 1955. There she met her husband of 52 years Andrew (Andy) Wild. In 1966 Molly, Andy and their three children moved to Kamloops, BC.
Stevie Stephenson of Kamloops passed away in Kamloops on January 5, 2016 at the age of 101 years.
Edith will be lovingly remembered by Edward her loving husband of 63 years, sons Brian (Ginger) of 16 Mile, Larry (Kelly) of Clinton, and David (Donna) of Kamloops, as well as her eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Walter (Del) Watts of Penticton.
He is survived by his son Terry (Nancy) and daughter Jay (John) Watson, eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, sister in-law Olive Stephenson as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Edward was predeceased by his wife of 64 years Kris in 2005, his son Arni in 2004, daughter-in-law Dorothy in 2004, his brother John, his sister Beatrice and parents Bill and Jessie.
Edith was predeceased by her parents Wilford and Daisy Watts, Brother John Watts, and Sister Ruth Hilgartner.
Dad was born and raised in Watrous, SK where he left to attend Optometry College graduating in 1937.
Edith was at heart a family woman. Time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren meant the world to her, and over the years she has created many wonderful memories with them all. Ed was the love of her life. She met him while working at the Princeton Brewery, and they were married on August 22, 1952. She also loved animals, and as a family they always had dogs or cats as pets over the years. She was an avid gardener, with beautiful flowers surrounding their home. Family dinners brought Edith great joy, where she would cook wonderful meals, and spoil everyone with her baking. You would also find her canning and freezing fruit from her garden. In their younger years Edith and Ed would look forward to Friday nights where they would go dancing at the IOF Hall.
Married in 1941 Dad shortly thereafter enlisted and became part of W.W.II. Following the war Dad and Mom settled in Moose Jaw where he practised Optometry for many years as well as engaging in numerous other business “Adventures”. Dad was an active member and volunteer of the Moose Jaw Shriner Club as well as the Curling Club and the Golf Club.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at the Cache Creek Community Hall. The family would like to give their sincere thanks to all the staff of Jackson House extended care, for all their loving care and assistance over these last three years. Your contributions to Edith’s well being are deeply appreciated. Donations would be gratefully accepted to the charity of your choice, the Canadian Cancer Society, or the Alzheimer Society of B.C.

With two of his three children in Kamloops Dad and Mom moved to Kamloops in 1977. He was a member of the Kamloops Golf Course and later Mt. Paul Golf as well as the Kamloops Curling Club. Dad volunteered for meals on wheels, the Canada Summer Games and several curling events. He was a family man with an easy going positive personality. Dad had a great sense of humor and a quick wit and made friends wherever he was. Dad and Mom loved to travel and visited many destinations; however, Hawaii was his favorite. Sun, swimming, snorkeling, cards and cocktails made for a complete day. We would like to give a special thanks to all of Dad’s faithful visitors especially to Emil and Shauna, as well to his amazing care givers and nurses at Ridgeview Lodge. Thank you to Dr. Eccleston for his above and beyond care and attention of Dad. Lovingly remembered There will be no service at this time. If friends so desire memorial donations may be made to Kamloops Hospice or the Shriners Children’s Hospital. Arrangements entrusted to Alternatives Funeral & Cremation Services 250-554-2324
Molly was predeceased by her beloved son Errol on August 9th, 2009 and by her loving husband Andy on May 19th, 2010. Molly will be missed by her daughters Julie, Carly (Claude) and Debbie (and family) from Scotland; by her sister Irene and brother Lenny from Scotland; as well as by her grandchildren Dylan Drummond (Victoria), Amber Akerman (Corey), Taylor Wild and Logan Royer; also by her great-grandchildren Miller and Isla Akerman. We would like to express our thanks to doctors Paul Yanko for the many years of taking care of mom, (you could always make her smile), and to Brenda Laupland for her care and kindness over the past few months. At Molly’s request there will be a private family service. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the “Wildman Memorial Society”, C/O Claude & Carly Royer, 6398 Dallas Drive, Kamloops, BC, V2C 4X5. The Society was formed in Memory of Molly’s son Errol Wild; a prominent Kamloops soccer coach. The Society awards scholarships to KYSA and TRU Wolfpack Soccer Players.

ANGELA PORCO Angela Porco was born on May 24, 1958 and passed away peacefully on January 10, 2016. Angela was surrounded by her loving family. She will be forever missed by her mother Mafalda, her devoted sister Silvana and her sister Ivana (Dan) Baudin. She will also be missed by her nephew, Michael who she enjoyed, her many aunts, uncles and many cousins will also miss her. She was predeceased by her Father Fiore. Angela was a gentle soul. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, and being able to share in the small pleasures we take for granted. She always enjoyed a coffee or cookie with whomever stopped by. She enjoyed helping her mother and sister’s bake, when she knew there would be goodies after. She loved to sneak treats, and make it seem that she did nothing. She enjoyed listening to all types of music. She loved singing and dancing with the Sisters from St Ann’s and having coffee with priests from Sacred Heart Cathedral who would visit her and her mother regularly. Family was her joy, and her comfort. We would like to thank everyone who helped Angela during her stay in ICU. You are all amazing individuals, and should all be commended for your dedication to your profession. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. A Funeral Service will be held for Angela at Sacred Heart Cathedral, on January 14 at 11:00 am. Father Andrew will be presiding. A private family interment will follow at the Mausoleum. Should friends desire, donations can be made to the RIH Foundation. Condolences may be made to www.schoeningfuneralservice.com Schoenings Funeral Service 250-374-1454

He leaves to mourn his wife of 50 years Bonnie, his sisters Elizabeth (Ron) and Debbie (Harvey), his seven children Ardell, Jeanette (Lloyd), Annette, Brenda, Angela, Scott (Janelle) and Dean (Kyla), eighteen grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. IVAN STANLEY HILLABY
March 17, 1923 - January 3, 2016
March 21, 1929 – January 6, 2016
Ivan passed away in the early hours of January 6, 2016.
It is with tremendous sadness that we say goodbye to our dad, loving husband and proud grandpa, on January 3, 2016, at the age of 92, at the Royal Inland Hospital. Dad was born to Paul and Amy Kotuk on March 17, 1923 in Pekoe, Alberta. He spent his younger years farming the family ranch and had many hilarious stories to tell about his escapades with his brothers and cousins. As dad reached his early teens, he struck out on his own joining the rodeo circuit and driving trucks. In 1941, he tried to join the army but was turned down because of his age. One year later, he was successful and became a very proud member of the Sea Fourth Highlanders- a pride that lasted his entire life. In 1946 he married the woman of his dreams, a union that would last 69 years. Dad became a carpenter after he retired from the service, and worked many different projects over the years. He retired at the age of 65, which freed him up to his other passions, fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his loving family and good friends.
Dad belonged to many organizations such as Wilderness Watch, Ducks Unlimited, and was a lifetime member of the Woodworkers Guild in Kamloops. Dad was predeceased by his father and mother, sister Eileen, brothers Jackie and Ken. Left to miss him forever is his loving wife Kathleen, daughters Doreen Taylor (Richard), Darlene Foley, Ellen Wakelam (Tom), grandchildren Gerry Hutchinson (Lynette), Brad Foley, Marcel Foley (Cherie), Tamra Foley, Tara Wakelam, Mandy Wakelam, Brock Wakelam (Cherise), great-grandchildren Ryan Wakelam, Zoe Wakelam, Samantha Foley (Brent), Lisa Goodliff (Devon), Nicolas Foley, Ryan Hutchinson, Andrew Hutchinson, Jayden Foley, Ashton Foley, Taylor Foley and greatgreat-grandchildren Marquis, Brooklynn, Lexie and Tahlia. Thank you to all the nurses on the 4th floor and to Dr. Rafhauser for their caring and dedicated treatment of our dad. There is no service by request. A Celebration of Life may happen in the spring. In lieu of flowers, any donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be gratefully accepted.
Ivan had said that he had no regrets and had been lucky to do the things that he loved in his lifetime. When Ivan was a young man, he was able to ride the range and be a Cowboy, which he loved. He was able to do this job for about twenty years, and then moved on to work for CPR Railways for thirty years until he retired. Ivan’s other loves were his music and leather work, at which he both excelled. He loved to crack jokes and make people laugh, while he entertained them with his beautiful music. We would like to thank the ER staff Dr. Ballard, Dr. Moon, and nurse Shae on the fourth floor at Royal Inland Hospital. We appreciated your thoughtfulness and care. Condolences may be expressed to the family from www.myalternatives.ca
WILLIAM RAWLEK William Rawlek of Kamloops, BC, passed away peacefully on January 7th, 2016, at 83 years of age. He is survived by his loving wife Donna McOuat, children Gene (Laurie) Rawlek, and Barry (Anna) Rawlek, as well as grandchildren Cody, Melissa, Monica and David. Bill is also survived by his sister Lee Andrews, and other relatives Ritchie (Laurie) Rawlek, Brenten (Shelby) Perry, David (Kimberly) Rawlek, Claire, Brett, Barbara (Steve) Stone, Georgina Kerr, Fred (Mary) Sandul, Mary Gray, Lisa (Mike) Truczka, and Charlotte and Ryan. He is predeceased by his daughter Marian (Joan) Rawlek (Apps) and brother George Rawlek. Bill worked in the Oil Fields in Alberta. After that he worked on the PGE Railroad as a crane operator, and earned the nickname “Burl Bill.” He then worked at Bethlehem Copper as a driller and crane operator, and later at Afton Mines as the same. He was a skilled wood worker, making clocks and tables out of burls. He loved hunting, fishing and RVing with Donna and friends. As per Bill’s wishes, there will be no formal service taking place. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his memory to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Condolences may be expressed to the family from www.myalternatives.ca

RICHARD LANDRY It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard Landry of Logan Lake, BC. Richard passed away at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, BC, on Monday, January 11th, 2016 at the age of 70. Richard is survived by his wife of 47 years Carol Landry (Brown) from Avondale, Newfoundland, his daughters Micheline (Sylvain Pinard) and Kerri Ann (Seth Bartman), his many brothers, sisters, brothers-in-law, sisters–in-law, nieces, nephews as well as many relatives and friends. Richard was born on April 16, 1945 in Nouvelle, QC to Edmond Landry and Simone Sleigher. Richard spent most of his working life in the mining industry and worked across Canada from Labrador City, NF to Pine Point, NWT. He spent the final years of his career at Highland Valley Copper in Logan Lake where he worked as a pipefitter from 1983 to 2009. Richard was known for his kindness and his caring for others. Regardless of the situation, he always approached life with a smile and a positive attitude. As a union and community activist, he was always ready to lend a helping hand or be a voice for those in need. He enjoyed being a mentor to young people and helping them find opportunities both in the community and at work. He was never short on good advice based on his own life’s experiences. An avid hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at the lake or at a favourite hunting spot. He always had a good story to tell about that big fish or the size of that moose. He always told his story with a smile and a twinkle in his eye, a sure sign of just a little exaggeration. A wonderful loving and supportive husband and father, a true friend and an outstanding member of the community, his departure has left a huge gap in so many lives. With his huge smile and sunny disposition, heaven is now a little bit brighter. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Friday, January 15th, 2016 at The Logan Lake Community Church, with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Richard’s life. In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a donation may do so to the Kamloops Royal Inland Hospital Renal Unit through the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Royal Inland Hospital, especially those who took care of Richard in the renal unit. Their kindness and support will always be remembered. On-line condolences may be expressed at www.schoeningfuneralservice.com.

JAN MUNRO COOK Our highly regarded SuperGrampz, Mr. Mom, MacGyver, motor-head, exercise fiend, and salad maker extraordinaire, Jan Munro Cook died peacefully with his family by his side on December 12, 2015, at the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice House in Kamloops, B.C. at 74 years of age. Much to Jan’s dismay (as he would have preferred to go out in a ball of fire) he was dealt a sudden and precipitous battle with cancer. Jan was born in Victoria, B.C. April 30, 1941 to the late Thomas Stevenson Cook and Gertrude Helen Bride. His father, of which he was very proud, was a Captain on a Frigate in the Royal Canadian Navy. He taught him excellent manners and nurtured his distaste for tardiness. Jan was the eldest to three sisters Gretchen, Mardie and Charlotte. Shortly after his birth, his parents moved to Regina, Saskatchewan where Jan began taking apart anything he could get his hands on. He would see how it operated and put it back together in significantly better working order. Some of his earliest memories include taking down his tricycle to nuts and bolts in the driveway at 3 years of age. Among his multitudinous talents, for this one he was particularly earnest. He was well known for mastering his ability to tune a crankshaft and many lifelong friendships arose from this very talent. After graduating from Sheldon Williams Collegiate in 1958, Jan became a legit cowboy. Riding bad ass bulls, bare back broncos, traveling the Grand Ole US of A, and rodeoing throughout the completion of a Bachelor of Science from CalPoly in San Luis Obispo, CA. While losing a few teeth and gaining a few scars, he was simultaneously hell bent on all things he could make go faster. His love affair with motors included multiple motorcycles. One in particular, a Harley Davidson Sportster, held a Saskatoon record in open class for over 20 years, accompanied him to the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1972 where he ran 152.02 mph. Jan became a very proud, single father of two daughters in the 1970’s to the late Jessica Jeanne Cook and surviving Jayna Ruth Cook (Conklin). Jan was devoted to his two daughters and brought them with him absolutely everywhere. Mr. Mom and his two Mugwumps were found participating or spectating at many a rodeo, boat race, air show, drag race, and turbo charged 4x4’ing camping in the boonies. SuperGramps was an active member of the NHRA for years where he raced side by side with Jessica Jeanne. One of his many lifetime goals was to have a 7 second bike in his 70s. This goal he accomplished in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2012. He ran 7.83 seconds at 173mph on a 1428cc 1978 Kawasaki. When asked how it felt afterwards he said, “But did I look cool?” His most recent passion became jet skiing. Jan was frequently seen on the Thompson River with his surviving granddaughters, Ruby Jeanne Conklin (6) and Madeline Louise Conklin (3). A polite and conscientious man, he cared deeply about showing respect to those he cared about. Jan was interesting, intelligent, kind, devilishly handsome, and quite the jokester. Dedicated friend, father, and grandfather, he was passionate about having fun and showing his friends and family a good time. He had a great appreciation for all that he had experienced. One of the last things he was heard saying was “I had a barn burner, did anybody else have that much fun?” A Celebration of his spectacular Life will be held at the Calvary Community Church, 1205 Rogers Way, Kamloops, BC on Saturday, January 23rd at 1:00pm. All are welcome to memorialize his contribution to his family and community. Thank you to all those people, as you are many, who made his life as rich and lived as it was. A special thank you the Hospice House for your kindness towards him. Thank you for always making sure there was snuggle room for us. Arrangements entrusted to First Memorial Funeral Services (250) 554-2429 Condolences may be left for the family at www.firstmemorialkamloops.com

TRU ACCOUNTABILITY? Since TRU became a university in 2005, student tuition has increased by one-third. Between 2005 and 2013, the number of TRU Administrators has doubled. During the same period, the number of full-time faculty members has remained unchanged and • Student services are disappearing. • Class sizes continue to increase. • Course offerings are being reduced. • Student retention remains disappointingly low.

iolent fall storms were in the forecast so the drive to Black Rock Oceanfront Resort on the west coast of Vancouver Island threatened to be a challenging one. A more cautious man may have postponed the trip but my reaction was: Bring it on. In the driveway was a Jeep Grand Cherokee 4X4 Overland edition, loaded for bear. Whoops, the latter comment might be considered a little insensitive in some parts, but you know what I mean. This luxuriously appointed and techy vehicle promised to perform every required task on tricky terrain. Judge its 2014 refreshed looks for yourself but it doesn’t set my pulse racing. There’s really not a lot you can do with your basic SUV big box look. I don’t really care unless it’s plug ugly. I’m looking for an efficient and roomy vehicle and this Jeep meets both of those tests. For this trip, cargo space was a major consideration. Four sports bags loaded with clothing for wet and windy weather, including boots, plus evening wear for the posh resort. Ah, yes, and two cases of wine for private functions. I didn’t even need to fold the rear seat flat to get all luggage safely stowed. Apparently, 1,028 litres was more than adequate. Folding the leather seat would have maximized capacity to 1,934 litres but reduce passenger capacity from five to two. I’m being a smart ass quoting these numbers.
Does anybody really know what a litre looks like when it comes to luggage? Without more ado, let’s get testing on the road. It was powered by a 240-horsepower 3.0-litre turbodiesel V-6 (the base engine is a 295-horsepower 3.6-litre V-6 and a 360-horsepower 5.7litre V-8 is a further option). This isn’t your grand pappy’s diesel — neither smelly, nor noisy. Fast forward to the ferry dismount, heading north on Highway 19 for what is largely a 40-kilometre mix of urban stop-go traffic and suburban highway. It was an important test of the vehicle’s urbanity because, let’s face it, most examples will spend most of their time in civilization rather than the back woods. It happily takes on the role of a comfortable higher-end sedan with the additional commanding row of the road. The fun began within minutes of taking exit 60 onto Highway 4, which is also known as the Pacific Rim Highway. The next 150 kilometres or so took us underneath the massive trees that form Cathedral Grove, through the quaint community of Port Alberni and by the river, where we counted fish jumping. Well, my passenger did. Rain fell along twisty roads around Sproat and Kennedy lakes, though it wasn’t the downpour promised. It was a blessing because it meant taking the truck to the speed limit and it just hugged the road in the corners. The air suspension guaranteed a luxury limo ride. The eight-speed transmission offered smooth ascent and descent through high country that forms Sutton Pass. In some uphill stretches, there were
a few too many gear changes but slipping it into sport mode fixed that. A couple of hours travelling through breathtaking scenery brought us to the Tofino/Ucluelet junction and sunshine. Minutes later, the first bottle was cracked and the magnificent view from the room’s balcony of Big Beach and a rocky grove enjoyed. Day two took us through slippery conditions on trails around the amazing Long Beach, which offered a glimpse of the Jeep’s considerably off-road capabilities. (Resisted the temptation to surf there.) Off-road fans are not going to buy this to pursue their hobby but it’s a fabulous vehicle for winter sports fans. By the way, safety equipment on all models includes electronic stability control with roll mitigation, ABS with brake traction-control system, trailer sway control, hill start assist, frontal airbags, front side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, driver’s knee airbag, active head restraints and tire pressure monitor. Safety options featured in the tester, included hill descent control, hill ascent control, rear camera, parking sensors, adaptive cruise control with collision warning, blind-spot monitors and rear cross path detection.
Fast facts:
• Power: 3.0-litre V6 EcoDiesel (240 hp, 420 lb/ft); • Transmission: 8-speed TorqueFlite auto; • Drive: Four-wheel drive (Quadra-Trac II) • Towing: 3,266 kg (7,200 lb); • Fuel economy: 11.2/8.4L/100km (city/ hwy); • Tank Range: 1,100 km; • Sticker price: $59,745, as tested $68,225.
