Traumatic summer rocks family The Rekdal family is still on the mend after son is diagnosed with brain cancer. ASHLEY WADHWANI ashley.wadhwani@mrtimes.com

A week had passed, and Tiffanie received word that more tests on Cody’s samples needed to be done. “I was staying positive... and then I got the phone call saying to come in and talk,” Mom said. “I knew it was bad news.” Tiffanie returned to children’s hospital, this time to meet Dr. Sylvia Cheng, Cody’s oncologist. Telling Marcus and Ryan their brother had brain cancer, Mom said, brought endless tears. When she explained what cancer was to seven-year-old Ryan, his first question was, “is my baby brother going to die?” Tiffanie and Jeremy truly didn’t know. On May 3, Cody started his first of six cycles of chemotherapy, and the next 90 days were filled with nausea, loss of hair, and bloody sores that developed on his lips.

School District 42 received $1.8 million for building upgrades in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows schools in 2015. The Ministry of Education recently released the list of completed and ongoing 2015 projects from across the province. Local plans included boiler upgrades at Albion Elementary and Fairview Elementary; as well as heating, ventilation, and cooling and lighting upgrades at Thomas Haney Secondary School and Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary. The old equipment was replaced with more energy efficient and cost saving versions, School District 42 chairperson Mike Murray explained. These upgrades as well as others, including lighting upgrades at six facilities, cost $2.4 million. The funds directed for each district is based on the priority of need, measured through facility assessments which are attached to district requests, Murray said. Compared to other districts across the province, the local district received a lower amount of funding.

Cody also suffered less common side-effects such as rashes and “his skin being so hot to the touch” that mom had to rub him in menthol cream, she explained. Three months in the hospital was a long time away from their home for both the mom and son. “At the hospital, Cody would always say that he wanted his boys and his daddy,” Mom said. In August, Cody was finally able to go home, and has since been getting stronger every day. The family is also continuing to recover, and Mom, Dad and Cody still sleep in the living room to stay close by and monitor his feeding tube. For Tiffanie, things will continue to be taken “day by day,” but for now Mom and Cody are just happy to be back at home. “Our family is finally back together,” she said with a smile.

and overwhelmed, the next few hours at the hospital are moments in time Tiffanie and her husband Jeremy will never forget. Cody’s vitals had started dropping, and brain surgery had to happen immediately. “We didn’t know if he was going to be able to move his left side of his body,” Mom recalled. Post surgery, the parents were given what she explained was a rare result from a brain surgery: the entire tumour had been removed. “We were so blessed that they got it all,” Tiffanie remembered. Three days later, Cody was back home, recovering while Mom, Dad, and Cody’s older brothers Marcus and Ryan were also recovering, after having watched their little brother and son go through such intense trauma.

BANDING TOGETHER

Last April, what began as a trip to the Ridge Meadows Hospital after a bump to the head, turned into a summer of surgery and chemotherapy at the B.C. Children’s Hospital for threeyear-old Cody Rekdal. In the two weeks after the initial trip to the hospital where Tiffanie Rekdal was told her son had suffered a concussion, Cody began exhibiting different aches and pains, the Maple Ridge resident explained. After several more trips to the hospital, Cody was diagnosed with an ear infection and bronchitis, Tiffanie said. Their family doctor had requested a CT scan, she explained, and when she showed up to the hospital with Cody, they “took vitals of him and sent us home.” On April 15, the frustrated mom took her son to B.C. Children’s Hospital, where she vowed that she wouldn’t leave until they made him better. “He was in so much pain, I knew something was wrong” she recalled. Cody received a CT scan, followed by an MRI that revealed a tumour located on the left side of his brain. He was scheduled for brain surgery sometime in the next day or two, Mom said. Arrested? Charged?

A Maple Ridge mom called the death of a 23-year-old woman who fell out of a moving party bus in downtown Vancouver this weekend “an unnecessary tragedy. Julie Raymond’s 16-year-old daughter Shannon died at a

friend’s house after taking drugs aboard a party bus in 2008. “I feel such overwhelming sadness for the family, but frustrated because yet another death has happened because of activities in that industry, she said. Raymond and her family are pushing for mandatory chaperones on party buses. The woman who died Saturday, Chelsea Lynn Mist James of Langley, was among a group of about 24 people celebrating a

birthday aboard a bus. At about 9:30 p.m., as the large vehicle turned south on Burrard Street from Hastings Street, the woman fell from an open door onto the street. She was hit by the bus and died on scene, said Vancouver Police Sgt. Randy Fincham. Police say after the fall, the driver was alerted by the other passengers and stopped the vehicle. The driver is co-operating with police. > More: mrtimes.com

David Leonard Anderson, 60, pleaded guilty to one count of telecommunicating to lure a child under 16. Sentencing took place in Port Coquitlam provincial court on Tuesday. In August 2014, an undercover officer from the B.C. Integrated Child Exploitation unit was approached online by Anderson, who said he was an 18-year-old boy living in Maple Ridge. The officer was posing as a 13-yearold girl. Anderson and the officer had conversations on Yahoo messenger using explicit sexual language and exchanged photos. More: mrtimes.com, search ‘Anderson’

Last year, the library waived $490 in fines and fees on the last day alone, Morris said, adding that the campaign allows

members to feel like they’re making a positive impact while getting rid of fines. “The nice thing is that we’re noticing those with low fines donating extra,” Morris said. as prices have been going down across the Lower Mainland, and they’ll likely fall just a bit further before our falling loonie has stopped its skid. Oil is flirting with $30 US a barrel, and the dollar has been hanging around 70 cents US. This brings with it both opportunities and threats to the economy of Canada, of British Columbia, and of our own little corner of Metro Vancouver by the Fraser River. First the good news: It’s cheaper to buy Canadian than it has been for a decade. That’s good news for anyone who works in the hospitality industry. Americans hunting for bargain vacations this spring and summer may look north and decide they like the idea of spending seventy cents on the dollar to take in our mountains, lakes, rivers, historical sites, wineries, hotels, spas, and B&Bs. It’s also good news for anyone selling wood, minerals, fish, or B.C.’s other natural resources on the world market. We are deeply discounted right now, and with the American economy finally revving up, hopefully local firms can find some new customers. Finally, we do sell other things than raw materials. From film production to video games to mobile apps, we make plenty of things that require skill with a camera or code, too. The bad news is that aside from the drop in gas prices, the current trends in the dollar and the world economy are going to make a lot of things more expensive for us. Produce is a big one, particularly in the winter when we get so much of our fresh fruits and vegetables from California and Mexico. Grocery bills will be going up – and that’s going to hit the poor and seniors on a fixed income harder than most. It’s also a sign that Canada’s manufacturing economy has been lagging. We can, and do, make a lot of things. But for too long we’ve relied on our natural resources, many of them non-renewable. We need both private enterprise and government help to rev up industries that don’t depend on pumping oil or digging up metals.

illness that brought the herd immunity phenomenon to light around 1930 – it takes about 90 to 95 per cent of a population to achieve immunity, either by exposure or vaccination, to protect the rest of the “herd.” Since measles still kills a few hundred thousand children each year in places where exposure is the only way to gain immunity, vaccination seems the sensible way to go – for most folks. There will always be a handful of people who, for medical or other reasons, cannot be vaccinated. Herd immunity extends a protective umbrella over those people, and also offers some protection to newcomers in the community. Herd immunity even serves as a bulwark against a disease that could be brought into the community by one of those newcomers. However, herd immunity tends to fail in a population of people who are too stupid to get themselves or their kids vaccinated. Polls indicate that in B.C. and Alberta, clearly the smarter end of the country, a

solid majority of residents believe vaccinations for certain diseases should be mandatory. The states of Washington and California both require vaccination certificates for kids to attend public schools. In Australia, where people apparently understand that preventing communicable diseases is not really a personal choice, they have legislation dubbed “no jab, no pay.” You can choose to put your children (and others’) at risk by refusing vaccinations – but any child support payments from the state are cut off. Heck, Australia even immunizes its mosquitoes. A program is afoot to vaccinate mosquitoes against malaria, so they can’t pass the bug on to people. Yes, moms and dads feel sorry for their kids who often cry when they get their vaccination shots. But sickness makes the kids cry louder and longer. Of course, dying shuts them up altogether. COMMUNITY FEEDBACK

Neighbourhood in need of City attention Dear Editor, Re: letter to Mayor Nicole Read. I am a grandmother of three children between the age of three and seven. My grandchildren and I often use the playground at the Thornhill Hall on 98th Avenue in Maple Ridge. On the last occasion we were at the playground, we witnessed lots of rodents running from the property, to the east of the play-

ground, toward the hall. A nearby property has piles of rotting garbage, including discarded food. The people living in the run-down house use extension cords, running from their neighbour’s house. I think this is a fire hazard. The property has lots of animals without proper shelter, no space to roam, and they’re standing in mud. The SPCA should

These boxes are not reliable and Canada post should be more helpful.” – Kim Plumridge “Restore home delivery but limit it to 2 to 3 days per week.” – Ronald Rogers “Ours has been broken since the middle of December and we have had no notice... With the stupid hours that the main office keeps (like the rest of the world doesn’t have to work) I have yet to get any mail… assuming that is that is actually where I have to pick it up.” – Shawna Grimason “Shocking that a force-driven government monopoly provides unreliable service/s.” – Anthony Richard “This has gone on far, far too long. I am reluctant to give my phone number and address for fear of retaliation as my grandchildren and I frequently use the City park. I would appreciate if you would investigate this matter as I am concerned for the health and safety of my grandchildren and other park users. Mavis Wilson, Maple Ridge

Term questionable Dear Editor, Re: [Suspect sought, Jan. 7, TIMES] In the story, the suspect who attacked a woman and wanted to steal her purse, was described “as a Persian male...” My comment is that Persia is not a country now, it used to be – long time ago – but now it is called Iran. So my question is twofold: a) What is the reason that the writer of the article, Eric Zimmer, did not call the person Iranian but rather Persian, which is not the correct way to refer to a person from Iran? Might it be because Iran is a state which now shows some hostility towards the West and the writer wanted to protect this robber from the potential backlash of the readers? Might it also be because he was Iranian and therefore most likely Muslim, so the politically correct way would be not to refer to the robber’s country of origin in a proper manner recognizable by most of the readers due to the Muslim connection? b) This robber was not caught, so how was it determined and by whom that the robber was a Persian (or Iranian)? The choice of words in the article leaves me wondering about the purpose and the intention of the usage of the words. Steve Fekete, Maple Ridge Editors Note: The wording came to The TIMES directly from an RCMP press release.

Lives in adults’ hands Dear Editor, Re: [Family imprisoned trying to save a teen’s life, Dec. 24, TIMES Opinion] Children are dying because B.C.’s adults in charge can’t figure out how to care, safely and effectively, for B.C.’s children. There is no magical age, no magical day that B.C.’s addicted children can make the types of decisions necessary for health and life while actively using drugs, and they should never be left to run that show. It is but a cowardly excuse that the adults use when we accept that our doctors will continue to prescribe potentially addicting medications to B.C.’s children and then have no means of helping them when they begin to die from the continuing effects of that very first prescription. Why does B.C. and the medical system act like there is some potential for these sick and dying children to do their job for them and sort this all out... while families are physically and financially destroyed under the strain of caring for a dying child addicted to drugs? – See full version of this letter at mrtimes.com Lori Hamilton, Maple Ridge

Ridge Secondary’s dry grad committee was pleased with the results of Saturday’s bottle drive, which raised roughly $1,100. Students Nevada Cook and Laura Long, both 17, volunteered their time to help raise money for games and activities at the annual dry grad event. The next bottle drive will be held in spring, and the next fundraiser is a pub night at the legion on March 5.

TIMES Travellers: Donna Evanson, Barb Gustafson, Jenny DeJong, Ron Evans, and Gerry Desgarlais – members of the Operation Christmas Child program in Ridge Meadows – worked in the Calgary processing centre last month. Each day approximately 16,000 gift-filled shoeboxes were processed for needy children in Haiti, Nepal, Ukraine, and West Africa. Local residents “generously” contributed 4,203 shoeboxes this past year, said Gustafson, the Ridge Meadows coordinator. “It is quite impressive how everything runs,” she said, of the Calgary operation, noting there are about 4,000 boxes filled per shift, with four shifts a day packing. Shoeboxes can be donated online throughout the year: operationchristmaschild.ca.

Over the noise of the rushing Alouette River, bird lovers Michael Buckingham and Jonahthan Smythe were astonished to hear the musical voices of several American Dippers burst through. The Vredik’s receipt from their Haney Sewing and Sound purchase won them $1,500 to shop again at the store, and a new Mini iPad. “We thought we’d go to the store and have a look around,” Vredik said. “We never dreamt we’d ever win... It’s wonderful.” Now, the couple has its eyes set on a new stove and microwave. Other winners in this year’s

A receipt from the purchase of a PVR and TV converter has landed a Coquitlam couple a chance to shop in Maple Ridge some more. On Dec. 23 or 24, Marg Vredik recalled that she and her husband Joe visited Haney Sewing and Sound to look at deals on electronics. The couple often makes the drive to Maple Ridge to shop because of the good parking and the convenience, Vredik explained. After purchasing their items, “the fellow told us there was a contest,” she continued. The contest was the Win Your Wish contest and draw, hosted by the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association (DMRBIA). By shopping in the downtown core, the couple’s receipt was eligible for their choice of one of four prizes

contest included included Maria Zuccaro, who won $2,000 to use with Transat Travel; Claire Eastwood who won $1,500 to Fuller Watson and a Mini iPad; and Doug MacIntyre who won a $1,500 shopping spree in downtown Maple Ridge, as well as a Mini iPad. In total, about 14,000 receipts were entered for this year’s draw – 4,000 more than last year, DMRBIA executive director Ineke Boekhorst said. “It was really fantastic; a great big success,” Boekhorst added. About 800 of the receipts entered were through online submission at winyourwish. ca, while the rest were collected from boxes in more than 60 local businesses. This was the third year DMRBIA hosted the contest, to encourage community members to shop within their own city, Boekhorst said. For a submission to be eligible, the receipt had to be from a business within the Maple Ridge downtown core, or 222nd to 230th Street, and from a purchase made between Nov. 27 to Dec. 31, 2015.

Working professionally in the music industry for the past 14 years has taught guitarist Brett Johnson a thing or two. And now Johnson – one half of Maple Ridge-based country-rock duo, The Johnson Brothers – is ready to impart that wisdom on to others. In addition to performing with his band, Johnson has spent the last five years teaching at a music school in Abbotsford. Now, he has opened a brand new music school in the heart of Maple Ridge – at 11948 227th St. to be exact. “We’re open and ready to offer stuff that nobody else in the community has done,” Johnson said. That includes providing a different approach to how and what teachers teach, and how and what kids are learning, he elaborated. “Being a guitar teacher in Abbotsford, I noticed that a lot of schools focused a lot

Eric Zimmer/TIMES

Maple Ridge musician Brett Johnson has just opened a new music school in Maple Ridge. on learning the traditional and classical music, jazz or things like that,” he said. “A kid who’s 10, 11, 12 years old, they don’t want to learn that. They want to learn what they’re hearing on the radio, or listening to on their iPod or iPhone, so that’s what we’re doing.” Johnson describes the school, called the Art of Music Centre, as “more contemporary, and more

modern.” The school’s goal is “to attract those students who want to learn how to play what they like listening to.” Though his focus is on the guitar, there are seven different teachers professionally versed in everything from piano to guitar, drums to voice lessons, violin to ukulele. “Our motto is: if you want to learn it, we have

it,” he quipped. Getting the school from idea to fruition is a journey that began in early August 2015. “It was a process but we’re hoping the payoff will be worth it,” the 29-year-old musician said. “We’ve been working on getting things set up, finding the building, finding teachers, and all that stuff.” The idea to open his own

music school dates back a little further to Johnson’s Abbotsford days though. “After seeing how things were run, and how they were doing stuff, everything they did was very well received, and I decided that I wanted to take that next step and open up my own place here,” he said. “Growing up in Maple Ridge, with my family [grandfather Elmer Tippe and uncle Rick Tippe both huge names in the B.C. country music industry in past] and band connections, I figured it would be a great place to open.” And while a life in the music industry has been a rewarding one for Johnson personally, the teaching aspect holds a big draw for him, as well. “In my personal experience as a teacher, I’ve discovered that learning how to play music can become a very rewarding thing for a child,” he said. “It also allows students to build self esteem, confidence, and learn a little bit about who they are as they grow up,” Johnson elaborated. The school is hosting an open house Sunday, Jan. 17, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

BOXING

Club still swinging with coaches The ‘sweet science’ keeps gaining momentum in Ridge. TROY LANDREVILLE

Three of the four coaches handling the reins of the Maple Ridge Boxing Club are, left to right, Brad Scott, Billy Drewitt, and Jason Burke. Not pictured is Rick Funk.

tlandreville@mrtimes.com

Four of “Pops’” protégés are keeping the Maple Ridge Boxing Club firmly on its feet, and in full swing. Billy Drewitt, Brad Scott, Rick Funk, and Jason Burke learned the ropes from the late John Skanks, who started managing the club in 1981. After battling health problems for three-and-a-half years, the man affectionately known as “Pops” by the youngsters he trained, died from congestive health failure on Jan. 13, 2014 at the age of 85. Fast forward to today, and Skanks’ former boxers are passing on their knowledge of the “sweet science” to the next generation of amateur pugilists at the club’s gym, located a couple doors down from the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre. Drewitt said after Skanks’ funeral, they were asked to come back to the club and help out. “I boxed in Maple Ridge for 12 years; as soon as I got on the B.C. boxing team I started here… about 1990,” Drewitt recalled. “I was fighting out of Burnaby first.” About returning to the club, he said, “it was that time of my life where I had two-and-a-half hours, three nights a week to give back. Somebody did that for

Troy Landreville/ TIMES

me and I’m just passing it on.” “Rick Funk was running it [the club] basically on his own,” Scott related. “He approached me and then we all kind of got together. We all gelled and we know what works, now, in the modern age.” Burke said boxing acts as a deterrent from kids falling in with the wrong crowd and getting into trouble. He added, “it gets youth off the street, it’s a good, healthy lifestyle – on Friday nights when we’re bursting at the seams, it’s all teenagers and young adults.” Drewitt said the most rewarding aspect from a coach’s perspective is to see the kind of

> SPORTS EXTRAS

confidence that boxing instills in young people. As well, Scott noted that Maple Ridge Boxing Club members have been busy, “fighting in almost every card.” Scott said the club offers a “family atmosphere, a team atmosphere.” Drewitt said “undesirables” aren’t welcome. “The first thing we try to teach is to be a good human being,” he added. “If the kid’s got an inclination of being a boxer, that’s an added bonus, but the first thing we try to [promote] here, is good human beings out on the streets.”

Of the four coaches, Funk has the most decorated resume. Before hanging up his gloves in 1989, Funk racked up a 75-8 amateur record, won the U19 provincial championships and earned a silver in the national championships in 1988. He also received the Jimmy Symes award for top boxer in B.C., and competed for Team Canada in the U19 “A” team in San Juan, Puerto Rico, losing in a close decision to the world champion.

Boxers impress Maple Ridge Boxing Club’s Connor Hollingshead had to wait a year to avenge a controversial

split decision to Jaxon Duff, the son of former Canadian Olympic team member Rick Duff. In a rematch on Duff’s home turf, Hollingshead pulled off a dominating unanimous decision win at Edmonton’s Southside Tournament. Meanwhile, senior boxer Brennan Demas posted a strong win in November, followed by a split decision loss in early December. An elbow to the face caused a cut that forced him out of the Edmonton tournament. Jackson Smith, a junior C competitor, also had a pair of strong performances in exhibition matches this past November.
