The hearing date for city councillor Julia Butler has finally been set. Butler will have her day in court on Feb. 1 at 10 a.m. at the Vancouver Law Courts. On that date, the B.C. Supreme Court is expected to decide whether or not Butler has to give up her position as councillor for the City of Grand Forks. The hearing was brought on by a petition from council to have Butler disqualified from

office for being in breach of her oath of office. Council voted on May 25, 2015 to petition the court for a declaration of disqualification against Butler pursuant to sections 110 and 111 of the Community Charter. In May 2015, the city’s law firm (Young Anderson) found Butler in a direct pecuniary conflict of interest regarding the water meter program. It is expected that if the Supreme Court disqualifies Butler that the city would announce an upcoming byelection to fill both her spot and the spot vacated by Michael Wirischagin.
Property values in Grand Forks went up almost five per cent from the year before. Single family residential properties for Grand Forks are valued at an average of $194,000 up from $189,000 from a year ago. The information on property values comes from the 2016 B.C. Assessment, which was released recently. The assessment develops and maintains real property assessments throughout British Columbia in addition to providing real property information. According to the BC Assessment website, the assessments are in compliance with the Assessment Act, which requires that properties be assessed as of July 1 of each year. To do this, BC Assessment produces assessment information annually to provide tax authorities with a tax base and other information collecting about property. According to the site, property values are assessed by taking into account a number of factors such as location, age of home, size of home, size of lot, miscellanous features, comparable sales prices and other real estate information. The information is gathered from a number of sources such as building permits, land titles, real estate transactions, on-site inspections, aerial and street front imagery, and owner reporting. Assessments are completed by July 1 and mailed to property owners in January. Assessments can also be viewed online at evalueBC, which is on the bcassessment.ca website. Property owners can also check out the assessments of neighbouring properties for comparison. Residents can also call 1-866-ValueBC with any questions. Anyone wishing to appeal their assessment has until Feb. 1 to file an appeal. The assessments are used to determine property taxes. “The value of all real estate on the annual provincial assessment roll is more than $1.3 trillion and provides the foundation for local and provincial taxing authorities to finance communities with billions of dollars in property tax revenue,” said the website. A total of 1,996,112 properties were assessed this

1986: Province Hotel destroyed by fire 1906 Ninety local residents traveled by CPR to Phoenix to attend the opening of the Miner’s Union Hall. An estimated 500 people were at the beautifully decorated hall for a banquet where a five-piece stringed orchestra entertained them. 1911 A local ladies hockey club was reorganized for the season. W.A. Williams was elected president of the group. 1916 Ald. W.K.C. Manly and Dr. G.H. Acres contested for mayor and 10 other candidates announced their bid for the six aldermanic seats in the civic election. 1921 J.A. McCallum, road superintendent, had been instructed by the Public Works, Victoria, to have plans prepared for the Carson bridge site. The estimated cost of the new structure was $10,000. 1926 Mrs. Evdokia Verigin, widow of the late Peter Verigin, and mother of young Peter, arrived in Grand Forks. She had come directly from Russia and was accompanied by Mike Plotnikoff of Grand Forks, who had gone to Russia eight months earlier with the hope of convincing Peter to come and be the leader of the Doukhobors in Canada. Peter was detained in Russia. 1931 Sam Talarico purchased the Valley Market from H.H. Brinkman. 1936 Grand Forks City Council had a cash balance of $1,757 at the end of its 1935 budget. 1941 Funeral services for Aylmer McCallum, former city clerk, were held at the

United Church and were conducted by Rev. Thomas Keyworth. 1946 Perry Scott and Lorne Murray bought out the blacksmith shop owned by Wil-
liam Liddicoat. 1951 Two carloads of badminton players journeyed over from Robson and took part in an impromptu tournament with the members of the Grand Forks club at the high school gym. 1956 A total of $169, 470 in building permits were issued by the city council in the year of 1955. There were 21 new homes and two commercial buildings erected that year. 1961 In 1960 the total fire loss was estimated at $17,000 in the rural area and $1,000 in the city district. 1971 On the road just past Gilpin, Darryl and Daphne Astofooroff found some pussywillows. 1976 Local postmaster Frank Wernick has confirmed that an additional 400 lock boxes will be added to the present number of 1,536 when the new post office opens up later this year. 1981 Mr. and Mrs. Wes Nevins arrived Jan. 1. Mr. Nevins is the first pastor of the new Sunshine Valley Alliance Church in Grand Forks. 1986 It took less than an hour for fire to level the Province Hotel early Monday as combined forces of Grand Forks city and rural fire brigades fought and won a desperate battle to save three adjacent
buildings. 1991 Bernice Melbra Manly, who passed away in Boundary Hospital Dec. 30, 1990, was the first of a long line of Manlys who have lived here in Grand Forks. Traffic through Canada Customs is expected to rise because of the Goods and Services (GST) said Customs Superintendent Ken Gresley-Jones. 1996 The Grand Forks Border Bruins had a successful start to the 1995-96 Season as they shut out the Beaver Valley Nite Hawks 4-0. The Bruins were backstopped to the shutout by rookie sensation Mike Prill. 2001 While Grand Forks assessment numbers are up slightly, the city’s neighbours to the west are generally experiencing drop-offs. Greenwood’s assessment roll decreased from $37.5 million to $35.1 million and Midway’s roll dropped from $53.2 million to $51.5 million. There is one glaring exception in the West Boundary: the big jump in the region occurred in Big White where the assessment roll jumped about $25 million. 2006 New Democrat Alex Atamanenko got a great birthday present as he crushed his opponents in the Southern Interior riding to snag a seat in Parliament in the federal election. 2011 RCMP and the Canada Border Services Agency made a “notable” seizure of cocaine at the Carson Port of Entry. Border Services announced that prior to Christmas, a couple from Republic, Wash. was passing through; a search revealed 83 kilograms in hidden compartments. The street value of the cocaine is estimate to be $3.5 million.

For the love of singing The Grand Forks Choral Society held its first practice of the season on Jan. 6 at the GFSS band room led by director Kirsten Nicolson. There were around 40 members out including five new members. “There were people from aged 13 to 73 out,” said choir member Nanci Gilmor. “This is a fun, non-audition community choir. The only requirement is a love of singing. New members are welcome to join until the end of January.” Gilmor added that the choir really needs bass and tenors. The choir is open to anyone high school aged or older. For more information go to grandforkschoralsociety.com. Craig Lindsay photo

In October there were a number of reported cases of deer mortalities. There were several speculations as to the cause of these deaths. Assessments a tool
It’s good to see that property values in Grand Forks have increased over the past year, at least according to the recently released B.C. assessments. Like anything, the assessments can be a valuable tool but the stats should be taken with a bit of a grain of salt. The BC Assessment crew determines the values based on a number of factors that determine market value. Most property owners in the area have seen the value of their property increase. That’s potentially great if you’re selling but it also likely means an increase in taxes. A local realtor spoke to the Gazette and told us that the assessments seem to be “all over the map” with little consistency. The realtor is worried that if the assessment goes up and property owners try to sell their house at an inflated price, there could be real problems. Grand Forks had a good year for real estate last year according to the realtor, but not the huge jump according to the assessments. Another realtor said that the increase indicated that they are selling more “high-end homes” which is affecting the overall values and leading people to believe that their home will be worth more this year than last when in fact it’s that the buyers are looking for better homes. Anyone who thinks their assessment is off significantly still has time to appeal but should act soon by going to bcassessment.ca.
Roy Ronaghan, we will miss you
Reckonings DELLA MALLETTE In my last column, I introduced the staff of the Grand Forks Gazette. You may have noticed there aren’t many of us, and in terms of the editorial department in particular, you’d be right to assume that we value our contributors. They deserve their whole column! Firstly, thank you to our readers for photos of their beloved pets for my personal favourite feature, Pet of the Week. Each week we rely on members of the community to help us identify photos. For example, we might take several photos at a school event and instead of stopping to get identificaiton for every photo, we’ll email photos to the school secretaries the next day. We might take a photo at the curling rink or arena, and it’s wonderful
to have the support of the organizations’ members to help us with information. Those are just a few examples of the many groups and individuals who assist us each week with photos. We can’t cover every event so it’s extremely valuable when someone from that event or host organization writes an article—for example, we didn’t have the time to write an article about the upcoming 4H registration night but 4H parent Erin Perkins was kind enough to submit an article. In the very busy time leading up to Christmas, we didn’t get to every photo opporutnity and were grateful to have photos emailed to us. Letters offer varying points of view and stimulate discusison. Keep them coming. We have a submission this week from members of the former deer committee, and this type of contribution speaks to expertise. Sometimes it makes sense to let those who know better, speak to the issue. That’s exactly why we
also feature columns written by contributors. Neither Craig nor I are going to try to explain the status and concerns of the Kettle River—certainly not when Graham Watt can do it so much better in his Kettle River Q&A column. We’re not going to explain the happenings of the recreation department when Lilly and Kim are willing to write an article that features the programming that the department wants to highlight each particular week. Thanks to Deb, who brings us the news from the Boundary Community Food Bank in her Hunger Matters column; to Cari of the Grand Forks and District Public Library for Check It Out; to Diana and members of the Phoenix Foundation in their new Million$ + Change column; to Natasha for Simply Nourishing. Milton Orris, school district trustees, Richard Cannings, the RCMP, BFISS staff… I know I’m forgetting people and I apologize in advance.
But I’ve saved a very hard acknowledgement until last. Our most prolific contributor was Roy Ronaghan was our opinion columnist for years and he passed away Jan. 2. About 10 years ago, Roy started spending time in our office. He and editor Jason Harshenin enjoyed good conversation about many issues, particularly environmental and social ones, and at that time Roy began writing an opinion column entitled One Issue at a Time. We gave him a desk and a computer and he didn’t mind that the desk was the smallest in the office and the computer the oldest. He didn’t charge us for his columns, and we never paid him even a token monetary honourarium. We invited to all our events and social gatherings and he simply became one of our family. His death has reverberated through the community. Whether you agreed or disagreed with his opinions, he was well known.

Les Johnson of GFTV lamented publicly at Monday night’s city council meeting, for those who didn’t know, that Roy had passed away—but he’d be watching! Councillor Colleen Ross said in her report: “Roy was an inspiration to me, and many people in our community. I will miss his challenging and informative editorials in the local paper, as well as his kindness, dedication and encoruagement to continue to press for social and environmental justice in all that we do.” From Graham Watt: “In the few years I got to know Roy I really grew to respect his thoughtful, provocative essays and came to admire his fearless and sometimes blunt prose. He didn’t shy from directing pointed questions at those of us with public responsibilities, and he leaves a legacy of informative and meticulously researched commentaries on the most important environmental and social issues of the day.” Roy, we will miss you.

Opinion
to the editor
Ronaghan leaves legacy behind Editor, The Gazette: It is with deep sadness that we write regarding Roy Ronaghan, who recently passed away. Roy was a former library trustee for Grand Forks and District Public Library but more importantly, a champion for the public. Roy believed in the public good and the responsibility of being an active citizen. He saw apathy as the greatest enemy and asked difficult questions to shed light on social justice issues and encouraged us all to be engaged and active. Roy was a quiet, private person with a passion for transparency and accountability. He attended all council
meetings, sometimes as the only member of the public in attendance. Roy loved libraries. On his holidays he would visit other libraries and bring ideas and brochures back to Grand Forks to share with us. He donated books on important issues to the library and was a great supporter of library workers. He joined us on the picket line every day during the long and difficult three-month lockout in 2009. He had a wry sense of humour. Once he turned up at the picket line with an ironing board and set it up on the front steps, along with a sign reading: “It’s time to iron things out.” We will miss his regular
column in the Grand Forks Gazette. We will miss his intelligence and research skills, but especially his passion for Grand Forks and Christina Lake. He was very concerned about the environment and development in the Boundary and elsewhere. He leaves a legacy of solid support for public services and friendship with the people of this community. Now it is up to the rest of us to respect his legacy by asking the difficult questions that make us think and take action. Get public input on recycling bins Editor, The Gazette: An open Letter to the City of Grand Forks Council, RDKB Board and the citizens of the City and Area D This letter is a request to city council and RDKB to take another look at the plan to remove the downtown waste bins. As far as I have been able to determine, no one has consulted the citizens of the city and Area D, small businesses or the chamber of commerce on this plan. These are the people most affected by this decision. Let’s look at some of the issues more closely and maybe find some alternatives. The new fire truck is not the problem. The problem is a few volunteer firemen parking spots have to be moved. Moving the bins up to the
landfill site could be a safety problem. A year or so back there was talk of the regional district wanting to close the Reuse Centre. One of the reasons given was that the site was an industrial area with big trucks and heavy equipment roaming around—not a good place for the public. Won’t the bins bring more public to the site? In addition, this location means access only seven hours a day, six days a week. The bins are now in a very convenient location for the public as they do business downtown. Will people really drive up to the dump to drop off a few glass jars or other recyclables they want to get rid or will they be disposed of somewhere else? Concern for the neighbours

is a consideration but there are only two homes adjacent to the site and one of these has a high solid fence. How much extra cost will small businesses have to shoulder to run to the dump and back? Is this an encouragement to downtown small business or a deterrent? What about the impact on carbon neutrality the city adopted? Won’t the extra distance and traffic to the dump release more carbon into the atmosphere? These are just a few things that need further consideration through public involvement and input before this plan is finalized. I urge the city and RDKB to seek public input on this plan before further action is taken. Ray Hanson, Grand Forks

Allin and councillors should pay legal fees Editor, The Gazette: I have recently learned of the action, by city council and the City of Grand Forks, to pursue their legal case against Julia Butler—a prime example of small town politics and small-minded thinking. I have recently moved out of Grand Forks after 22 years for exactly this reason. I was sick and tired of politics and city politicians in Grand Forks in general. I am no fan of politicians at the
best of times at any level, but those in Grand Forks really take the cake. I believe this action is being orchestrated by one Doug Allin, the highest paid civic employee. I suggest that if and when the city loses its case, and it’s probable they will, that the huge expenses the city will face from lawyers’ fees be deducted from Mr Allin’s and the rest of the councillors’ salary. David Janzen, Abbotsford B.C.

Get your dog licences now at RDKB
IN BRIEF
News
Licencing makes it easier for Animal Control to identify canines CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) is reminding residents that dog licences for 2016 are needed for all dogs and can be picked up at the RDKB office in Grand Forks. Animal control, including dog licencing, is an RDKB service which covers the City of Grand Forks, the City of Greenwood, and RKDB Area C (Christina Lake) and D (Rural Grand Forks). “They would need to go to the RDKB office in Grand Forks and pick up their dog tags and
pay their licencing fee,” said Mark Andison, general manager of operations and deputy CAO for the RDKB. Andison said the cost of the dog licence depends on a number of factors such as type of dog, whether they’re spayed or neutered, and time of year. “If someone is picking up a licence for a male dog early in the year, say in January or even before, the licencing fee is $25 for male or female. For a neutered male or spayed female it’s $15.” Dog licences are valid from the calendar year from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. “We try to get people to
get their licence as early in the year as possible or before Jan. 1,” said Andison. “If someone comes in to pay for their permit for the year after Jan. 31, the fee goes up for unspayed and unneuetered dogs to $40, and $30 for spayed and neutered dogs. That’s very much intented to encourage people to get their licences for the year either before the year begins or in January.” Andison added that someone who took possession of a dog midway through the year would have their licence fee pro-rated. Owners of unlicenced dogs picked up by animal control will
be subject to fines and will have to pay the licencing fee as well. Andison said having a licenced dog also makes it much easier for animal control to track down the owner if the dog gets out and is found. “If your dog does get away and is roaming free it is up to the animal control officer to identify whose dog it is and to return it to the proper owner,” he said. “If animal control finds a stray dog they can easily identify it and give the owner a call.” The RDKB office in Grand Forks is located at 2140 Central Avenue right next to the arena.
Luncheon a good chance to check out Friends Gazette Staff
Would you like to support your library, promoting the use of the library and focusing the attention of the public on the library and its services? You can do just that by joining the Friends of the Grand Forks and District Public Library. The Friends is a non-profit organizaiton of volunteers with its own constitution. In November
1993, the Friends became a registered charity under the Society Act of B.C. Members meet about six times a year. Friends do not perform a policy-making role for the library, but their opinions are valued by the library’s board of trustees. Friends supplement what cannot be provided by the library budget with funds, materials, equipment and services. Friends members have raised
funds a number of ways (book sales, a starlight dinner, gift baskets and cookie sales, to name a few) and are always looking for new, unique fundraising ideas. New members are always welcome, and an upcoming luncheon meeting is a perfect opportunity to meet the group. Meet on Thursday, Jan. 21 at 12:30 p.m. at the Grand Forks Station Pub in the upstairs banquet room, for a no-host lunch
and a very brief meeting. “The meeting portion of the luncheon will be very short; just enough to give you an idea of what we do,” said Friends President Della Mallette. “It’s a good opportunity to socialize, and for prospective members to meet the group.” To RSVP, phone Mallette at 250-443-1657 (day) or 250-4428175 (evening); or email her at dmallette@nethop.net.

Looking for a new place to put your passion? Consider getting involved
Grand Forks Credit Union (GFCU) has been serving our members – who live near and far – since 1949. We are a member-owned financial cooperative. Each and every one of our members makes a difference to our well-being – both as a locally owned and operated company and as citizens living and contributing together within our communities. Imagine, if you will, the 19 original founders of our credit union meeting at the Grower’s Exchange one August evening in 1949 and contributing $30 each. Granted its charter on August 22, 1949, the Credit Union started attracting attention. Within a year, 50 members had joined and assets were over $400. Today, we are almost 9,000 members strong with more than $220 million dollars in assets providing a full range of competitive financial products and services and continually re-investing into our communities. What would the Boundary be like if the credit union had never been born – or suddenly disappeared today? From the beginning, our job has been to make a way for regular people to access financing to help them live their dreams… originally for farmers and small business. We’ve stayed true to our purpose, continuing in the tradition of the cooperative movement.

How do I express my interest to run in the election? If you are interested in becoming a candidate in the 2016 Board of Directors’ Election, please download the Candidates’ Intro Kit which outlines what is required of a Director in terms of time and qualifications. And please email us at info@gfdscu.com to express your interest in having a member of our Member & Community Relations Committee contact you. What is GFCU looking for in its prospective candidates? GFCU needs leaders who bring with them a broad range of skills and attributes that strongly align with our values and that support and strengthen the current Board’s ongoing commitment to implementing our strategic vision. Did you know…? Credit unions, called by various names around the world, are member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperatives that provide savings, credit and other financial services
to their members. Credit union membership is based on a common bond, a linkage shared by savers and borrowers who belong to a specific community, organization, religion or place of employment. Credit unions pool their members’ savings deposits and shares to finance their own loan portfolios rather than rely on outside capital. Members benefit from higher returns on savings, lower rates on loans and fewer fees on average. Credit unions worldwide offer members from all walks of life much more than financial services. They provide members the chance to own their own financial institution and help them create opportunities such as starting small businesses, growing farms, building family homes and educating their children. Regardless of account size in the credit union, each member may run for the volunteer board of directors and cast a vote in elections. In some countries, members encounter their first taste of democratic decision making through their credit unions.* *WOCCU.org website excerpt

Assessments year, up 1.06 per cent from the year before. The total value of real estate assessed in B.C., $1.34 trillion, is up 11.1 per cent from the previous year. The value of new construction, subdivisions and rezonings was $20.36 billion, up 8.9 per cent. In the Kootenay-Columbia region, owners of more than 142,000 properties will be receiving their assessments this month. “The majority of residential homeowners within the region can expect an increase compared to last year’s assessments,” said Ramaish Shah, Kootenay Columbia Region deputy assessor, in a press release. “Most homeowners in the Kootenay Columbia region will see modest increases depending on their location. For example, a typical single family home in Nelson that was previously assessed at $315,000 was valued at $333,000 in the summer of 2015.” The typical percentage change in value (as of July 1) has increased from 0 to +10 per cent for residential single fam-

ily homes and residential strata units such as condos, and -5 to +5 per cent for commercial and light industrial. Overall, the Kootenay Columbia region’s assessment roll increased from $36.97 billion in 2015 to $37.89 billion this year. A press release stated that value reflects a change due to market movement as well as $361 million in growth due to subdivisions, rezoning and new construction. The Kootenay Columbia region includes the southeast portion of the province from Cranbrook to Grand Forks and from Trail to Golden. The 2016 assessment roll (market value as of July 1, 2015) estimated value for single family residential properties in the City of Grand Forks is $194,000, up from $189,000 in 2015. By comparison, Trail is $155,000, down from $166,000 in 2015; Nelson is $333,000, up from $315,000; Greenwood is the lowest valued at $125,000, which is actually up from 2015’s $121,000; Midway is $176,000, up from $173,000 in 2015; and Castlegar is $264,000, up from
$254,000 in 2015. Although there are no estimated average values for RDKB rural areas, Shah said Area D/Rural Grand Forks properties are up an average of 5 to 10 per cent from last year, while Area C/Christina Lake is up 10 to 15 per cent. Shah urges property owners to go the BC Assessment website and compare assessments with their neighbours. “Property owners can find a lot of information on our website including answers to many assessment-related questions, but those who feel that their property assessment does not reflect market value as of July 1, 2015 or see incorrect information on their notice, should contact BC Assessment as indicated on their notice as soon as possible in January,” said Shah. “If a property owner is still concerned about their assessment after speaking to one of our appraisers, they may submit a Notice of Complaint (Appeal) by Feb. 1 for an independent review by a Property Assessment Review Panel.”

Death and dying a discussion at the library
It is a fact of life that at some point, ev erybody dies. Have you given any thought to what that’s going to look like for you or your loved ones? Many people probably haven’t given it
much thought. It’s too morbid, too depress ing, and it just seems easier not to deal with it. However, at some point you’re probably going to have to deal with death and like a Boy Scout, it’s best to be prepared.
Death can be a complicated subject, and it’s hard to know where to start. Since li brarians almost always have an answer, I have one for you now. Read Smoke Gets in Your Eyes and Other Lessons from the Cre
matory by Caitlin Doughty. I recommend this short non-fiction book to everybody who ever intends to die some day, and also to those who don’t intend to die ever. Basically, I recommend it to every body. The book demysti fies a lot of what goes on inside of funeral homes and what exact

Reverend Shenstone retires CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
It’s been a long, storied journey for the Reverend Simon Shenstone, who recently retired after 28 years at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Grand Forks. As the head priest for the Boundary Parish, he also precided over St. Jude in Greenwood and St. Mary’s in Kettle Valley. Shenstone, who officially retired on Dec. 31, is planning on staying in the area with his wife. Bob Purdy, who was an assistant to Shenstone since 2004, said Shenstone was very involved in the community and was a great person to work with. “He was very much the pastor to the town of Grand Forks,” said Purdy. “Everyone knew him. He was at a lot of public events including most of the Remembrance Day ceremonies. He took a lot of Legion funerals and other funerals and weddings. He was involved in the ministerial with other clergy and with the Anglican Diocese of the Kootenay. He was also chaplain for three years with the B.C. Anglican Youth Movement.” Shenstone was born in a seaside town in Essex in Southeast England. “It’s oppo-
site Belgium and north of the Thames,” he said. “I went to a lower school and for my teenage years I went to a Roman Catholic boarding school run by Jesuit priests.” Growing up, Shenstone was fascinated with North American First Nations, particularly the Lakota (Sioux) people. “When I could, I studied all the anthropological books concerning the Lakota people and their culture,” he said. “When I was 18 I left England and came to the United States and went to live on a Lakota reservation in South Dakota. I stayed there for the summer of 1969 and then hitchhiked all around the U.S. and Canada having all kinds of adventures as one does when one is just turning 19.” During that time Shenstone met his wife Juno on a Greyhound bus going across the United States. “I got on in Oakland and she was already on the bus,” he recalled. “I noticed her but it wasn’t until we got to Salt Lake City that we started to sit together and talk.” Juno was living on a Chippewa reservation in northern Minnesota, while Shenstone went back across the pond. “I would send her postcards when I returned to England,” he said. “I wrote to her and arranged to meet her in her home
state of California in the spring of 1970.” The two were married that summer and lived together in a teepee in the foothills of the Sierras (California). Sadly, a friend of theirs accidently burnt the teepee down shortly after they were married and they lost most of their possessions. Shenstone went back to England but would soon return to North America with Juno. “I decided I wanted to return and live in a teepee in the wilderness of the badlands of South Dakota,” said Shenstone. “But that didn’t work out because the Vietnam war was on and if you immigrated to the United States, you got your draft papers with your immigration papers.” The young couple then decided to head to Canada in an old 1950 Dodge truck with their new teepee in the back. After crossing over into Manitoba they headed west to B.C. and settled into the mountains by Christina Lake. “We moved around to where there was good water and wood,” said Shenstone. “We were hunter/gatherers for about five years, moving our teepee around from place to place in the mountains above Christina Lake.”

Become a Dementia Friend January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month
SUBMITTED
to the Grand Forks Gazette
Many Grand Forks residents are this month making one of their most important New Year’s resolutions ever. They’re becoming Dementia Friends, committing to learning a little bit about dementia so they can be supportive and inclusive toward people with the illness, which has become one of the country’s most pressing health issues. Statistics suggest three out of four area residents know someone living with dementia. “People affected by dementia continue to live in and be a part of our communities, and we can support them to stay connected in ways that are meaningful for them,” says Julie Lefflelaar, regional support and education coordinator for the non-profit Alzheimer Soci-
Shenstone Eventually the Shenstones bought some property in the area and built a cedar log house. Shenstone took on a variety of jobs such as trail builder, archaelogy assistant and park ranger. During that time he became reacquainted with Christianity and attended Perley Church in Christina Lake and the Pentecostal Church in Grand Forks. “By the mid ‘80s I felt a calling to a deeper ministry in Christianity,” he said. “I had become a volunteer lay preacher for the United Church in Grand Forks. I also took regular service in the church at Christina Lake.” Shenstone went back to England with his family and studied theology at Oxford University. “I graduated from there in 1988 and was placed by the Bishop of Kootenay at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Grand Forks,” he recalled. “I became deacon in charge of Boundary Parish in June of 1988. I was ordained priest the following year and became priest in charge of Boundary Parish. I have had that ministry ever since.” Shenstone has always loved the beauty of the Boundary area and that’s one of the major reasons he plans to stay in the
ety of B.C. for Grand Forks and the West Kootenays. “Through individual actions we can raise awareness of dementia and reduce the stigma attached to it.” The Dementia Friend campaign is the cornerstone of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, which runs until the end of January. Becoming a Dementia Friend is easy, says Lefflelaar. The process starts by signing up at DementiaFriends.ca. The next step is to understand five simple things about dementia: • It is not a natural part of aging. • It is not just about losing your memory. Dementia can affect thinking, communicating and doing everyday activities. • It is possible to live well with dementia. • There is more to a person
than a diagnosis of dementia. • The Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s Grand Forks & West Kootenays branch is here to help people with dementia and their care partners. That knowledge can easily translate into action at home and work, Lefflelaar adds. The society has supported people living with dementia for 35 years. One of its initiatives, First Link®, connects people affected by dementia with information, society support services and programs such as Minds in Motion®, and dementia education sessions at any stage of the journey. Grand Forks residents can find out about upcoming education sessions by contacting Julie Lefflelaar at 250-365-6769 (toll-free 1-855-301-6742) or jleffelaar@alzheimerbc.org, and visiting www.alzheimerbc.org.

area with his wife now that he is retired. “I would often travel to dioceses and conferences and various things and carpool with other priests,” he said. “As we would come through Grand Forks I’d often remark about how beautiful the city it is with the treelines, the highway, the old houses that you see along Central Avenue, just the beauty of the place. The Kettle River is also very attractive and you can float down it in the summer.” Shenstone also enjoyed the people he has come across during his time the Boundary. “Especially the cross-section of English and Russian. I’ve always felt some affinity for, in particular, the spirituality of the Doukhobors.” Back in the spring of 1997, the old Holy Trinity Church in Grand Forks burnt to the ground just short of its centennial celebration. Shenstone was responsible for helping rebuild the church. “I had some input into the design of the church,” he said. “It was finally put together by an architect from Nelson and he took some of my ideas and made it happen. So the building of the present day Holy Trinity is certainly one highlight from that time.” Shenstone said the true highlights of his career have always
been being part of and witnessing the spiritual awakening of parishioners. “There have been many,” he said. “It’s always a joy to see somebody released from oppression. Anything that helps them live their lives in a more real way—to find the way of Christ. When people release that guilt and become free and feel forgiven.” Shenstone said we are all one with God whether we know it or not. He always wanted to bring into focus the love and compassion that we can express in the world through our beliefs. “When we show love and compassion to one another we are displaying God, we are showing God, we are incarnating God, we are making God real.” The Shenstones raised four children, three daughters and one boy, all of whom live in the Kootenay region. They also have eight grandchildren with one on the way. Shenstone plans to stay in the area and work on fixing up the family’s 32-hectare property above Christina Lake. A retired priest from Castlegar, John Ruder, has been appointed interim leader for the congregation until Shenstone’s position is filled permanently.

Ice fishing derby Get out into our backyard! planned at Wilgress Get out and enjoy winter
Popular event draws all ages GREG STERLING
Submitted to the Gazette
Once again another year has gone by, and once again we’re getting ready for our fishing derby at Wilgress Lake. Last year the weather was very warm and with lots of rain. We were afraid the ice would not hold up but luck have it, the cold weather came and the derby went on safely. We had a good turnout of people and their families, and want to thank our sponsors for making this derby what it is today. The funds raised last year helped send a youth to a four-day survival camp outside of Clinton, B.C. as well as fund a family with medical needs. We are blessed with all the good people of the Boundary for helping us in support and their volunteer time. When you look at the kids and the smiles, families participating, it’s a warm feeling you get inside you. This event is to get families connected with their children—many youths never even caught a fish! But when they do, it’s great to see their faces.
Ice fishing gives those avid angles a chance to hook the big ones. But for the kids, it’s just about getting a bite. The best part is all the prizes up for grabs and not to mention a trophy. Last year, the ladies took first and second place. So this year the men have their work cut out for them. For those who may not have a fishing rod or auger, just come and see these baskets were filled up each having over $250 worth of items. This raffle has been a big success with the fishermen on the ice, as they have a chance to win and bring bring home something nice for their loved ones. So thanks to my wife, we just don’t have to bring home fish. So even if you don’t fish, come on out and support us in other ways, and enjoy the winter event watch for news, ads, and posters. Derby tickets are available at Crowsnest Keep and Super Save Gas in Grand Forks; at the Udder Store in Greenwood; and at the lake on derby day. For more information call 250-4425848.
Grand Forks and area is a hidden jewel during the winter months for a variety of outdoor recreational activities. “Our backyard is our playground.” Phoenix Ski Hill is hidden back in the mountains just 20 minutes west of Grand Forks. It is still very reasonable for families to enjoy a day on the slopes. The hill is open daily Friday to Tuesdays from 9:30 3:30 p.m. Go to their website at www.skiphoenix.com and get complete details on daily and multiple day rates as well as ski/snowboard lesson packages. Also, the trails are groomed and ready for some great cross country skiing at the Marshall Lake area. Check your blood pressure

Local rink will host seniors
Boys team takes on parents This Saturday the Grand Forks Curling Club was to host the West Kootenay High School Playoffs with the GFSS Wolves boys team taking on Salmo Secondary; however, the Salmo team couldn’t make the trip. Not wanting to waste ice time and an opportunity to practice, the boys took on parents. Pictured discussing the play are (from left) Lisa Anderson and Leigh Wilson, with Zane Bartlett, Dave Bartlett and Colin Anderson watching. Border Bruins drop two on the weekend

The Grand Forks Border Bruins came up short twice on the weekend to a couple of the top teams in the KIJHL. On Friday at the Jack Goddard Memorial Arena the Bruins struggled to score and were shut out 4-0 by the league leading Kimberley Dynamiters. The Nitros opened up scoring at 17:37 with a goal from Eric Buckley and never looked back as they cruised to the road victory. Saturday the Bruins travelled to Castlegar to take on the Rebels, who are currently in second place in the Eddie Mountain division. Grand Forks found themselves behind the 8-ball quickly after Braeden Harke
picked up a five minute major and game misconduct for head contact. During that time the Rebs scored twice to go up 2-0 early in the first period. Tyler Fyfe brought the Bruins to within one with a goal at 1:59 of the first assisted by Garret Brisebois and Connor Manegre. A goal by Mike Bhatoa at 13:09 of the second put Castlegar up by two goals once again. Bruins’ captain Bryson Yee would bring the Bruins close with a power play marker at 16:38 of the third period but they would get no closer as the Rebs closed out the game with a pair of goals to get the 5-2 win. The Bruins are clinging to third place in the division by a scant two points over Nelson.

points, while Zailey Howard added six. The Wolves relied on solid defence and a strong attack on offence to get their first win of the season. The junior girls then travelled to Osoyoos on Friday and competed in their first tournament. In the team’s first game they lost 38-20 to the host Osoyoos Rattlers. In their other games, GFSS lost to Merritt 35-16 and Barriere 36-13. Players of the game were Makortoff, Dylann Aisling and Kiandra Anderson, respectively. “It was a challenging weekend,” said coach Craig Lindsay. “We faced three Okanagan teams and they tend to be a little stronger than the competition we see around the Kootenays.” Lindsay said the team was able to work on their offensive plays and improve their overall team defence. “It’s still early in the season and the tournament gives us a chance to see what we need to work on,” he said. On Monday the Wolves picked up a big 34-8 win over Boundary Central of Midway after leading 29-0. Elizabeth Henne led a balanced attack with five points for GFSS. “It was a good win,” said Lindsay. “We were able to work on our plays a little bit and our passing as well. We did miss a lot of easy shots near the basket so shooting will definitely be a prior at the next practice.” Lindsay credited the solid play of guard Portia Dagg playing against her former team. “Kiandra Anderson also had a strong game hitting a couple of key shots and playing good team defence,” he said. GFSS travels to Castlegar on Wednesday to face the Stanley Humphries Bulldogs. Portia Dagg (#6) of the Grand Forks junior girls basketball team puts up the shot against Merritt in the team’s first game at the Osoyoos tournament. The Wolves would fall to the Panthers from Merritt 3516 despite six points from Tara Makortoff, who was named player of the game. Craig Lindsay photo

Kathaleen Fofonoff (nee Plotnikoff) On December 8, 1946 a baby girl was born to Philip and Nancy Plotnikoff in Grand Forks, B.C. Kathaleen enjoyed growing up with her mom and dad, older brother and sister, grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins in the small village of Koolekovka. The family then moved to a new home in Almond Gardens. After the passing of mother Nancy, the family became a blended family with new mom Polly, brother Fred, sister Nina. A few years later sister Elena joined the family. Living on the farm was really tough work and Kathaleen would wonder off to the far garden and would take a nap when she got tired. Thank goodness for the family dog Skipper, who of course would be napping with her. He would jump up and down when Dad would call for her. Kathaleen left home at a very young age. She set her sights at becoming a great cook. She headed to Oliver where she got a job at one of the local restaurants and after gaining the experience she needed, moved to the Kootenay area where she met her husband Cyril. Her cooking experience landed her a job at the Fire Side Restaurant where she worked for many years before taking a position at Selkirk College. Being so young minded and warm hearted, this was a great fit for her as the students looked forward to seeing her smiling face. Kathaleen retired after many years of hard work and moved to Grand Forks to be near her dad and sister. She also joined the Grand Forks Hospital Auxillary where she enjoyed volunteering. Kathaleen’s love for her family and friends was unending and she would always greet you with the biggest smile and hugest hug and always part with her favorite phrase of “I wove you”. Kathaleen was taken from her pain on December 23, 2015 when she passed away in Boundary Hospital. Kathaleen was predeceased by her brother George, mother Nancy, grandparents, mother Polly and father Philip. She is survived by her brother Philip, Judy Plotnikoff and family, sister Violet, Bill Savitskoff and family, sister Elena, Dan Arishenkoff and family, Brother, Fred Zibin and family and sister Nina, Steve Babakaiff and family. Kathaleen will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her family and friends. She will remain “Forever Young” in our hearts. Rest well our dear sister.
