SERVING MISSION SINCE 1908
Tax scam costs man thousands Thought he was going to jail Mission Record
A Mission man has been conned out of more than $5,000 because of a telephone scam that is being run across Canada. The long-time local resident, who asked that his name be withheld, wants to warn people in the area not to fall for the “convincing” con. The incident took place last week. The man came home to discover a message on his answering machine claiming to be from a Revenue Canada federal investigator. When he phoned the number, he was greeted by someone saying “Revenue Canada, how may I help you?” He was then transfered to someone who claimed to be Richard Benjamin, senior tax lawyer for Revenue Canada who preceded to accuse the Mission man of evading taxes from 2004 to 2010. He was told the investigation shows that he has been evading taxes on purpose and he was being charged on three counts and each count had a one-year sentence. They were also suing him for $35,000.
“I was in shock. They sounded professional and convincing.” He was told if he paid a portion of the money owed now, they would cancel the warrant for his arrest. “Unfortunately, they got me, because they were very convincing and I sent the money away.” He sent them $5,200 through the Internet. That money is now lost. But his ordeal didn’t end there. The scammers phoned back and told him the judge was not satisfied with the payment and wanted an additional $7,800. That’s when he thought he might be involved in a scam. When he refused to send more money, he received another phone call from a man claiming to be a Mission RCMP constable, who told the man to stay at home because he was coming to arrest him. “I was so scrambled at that point, I said I’m going to the Mission RCMP right now.” When he arrived at the Mission detachment, he discovered that no such constable existed. An armed robber walked into a local grocery store on Friday afternoon (Jan. 8) and escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash. The robbery, which took place at Mikes Market, a community grocery store located in Hatzic Bench (8160 Manson St.) occurred at approximately 2 p.m. According to witnesses, the suspect was driving a red Mazda pick-up with garbage in the back and

had a female with him. Mission RCMP are actively investigating the robbery but no suspects have been arrested at this time. Staff Sgt. Rob Dixon said the red truck used in the robbery has been recovered. “The vehicle was stolen and was recovered a short distance from the scene,” he said. Anybody with information on the incident are asked to contact the Mission RCMP.

Recovery home coming
NOW OPEN
New facility will house up to 15 women Kevin Mills Mission Record
A new supportive recovery facility will make its home in Mission. Council was unanimous in its support to allow a three-year temporary use permit for the project. The Hope For Freedom Society will run the facility in a single family dwelling located at 34641 Lougheed Highway. The recovery house will be for women only and can accommodate 15 people. Rob Thiessen, managing director of the Hope For Freedom Society, said the large house is in a relatively secluded area, which is perfect for the work being done. “What we look for is a place that we can make a safe place for
our women to recover from drug and alcohol issues.” He said all of the clients are considered vulnerable adults. The programs offered can take seven months to a year to complete. As part of the programing, the woman in the recovery facility are up at 6:30 a.m. and are in group or doing “some kind of chore” until the evening. They are then transported to neighbourhood meeting, like alcohol anonymous or other organizations. “The women’s recovery program is fairly structured. We believe in programs. We believe in not having too much idle time and, particularly for women, we believe in protecting them from outside influences,”
All 911 calls now sent to Vancouver Beginning Jan. 19, all 911 calls in the Fraser Valley will now be fielded by E-Comm, the emergency communication centre located in Vancouver. E-Comm will service the communities of Chilliwack, Mission, Hope, Kent, Harrison Hot Springs and Electoral Areas A through H. Currently, 911 response services are under contract with the RCMP’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) based in Chilliwack. When a call comes in to 911, operators determine the nature of the emergency and then transfer the caller to the requested first responder agency, either fire, police or ambulance. “While the RCMP has provided exceptional service to the FVRD over the years, on review of the contract the board of directors decided to move to E-Comm,” explained Paul Gipps, CAO of the FVRD. The new contract will result in a budget reduction of approximately $316,000, a savings that will be proportionately shared by the partner communities. Gipps said the public shouldn’t notice a difference when dialing 911. “This will be a seamless operational change. Residents in our communities can rest assured that they will continue to receive the high quality service they expect when seeking emergency assistance.” E-Comm is the largest 911 call centre in B.C. and is currently responsible for 84 per cent of the province’s 911 call volume. The company also provides dispatch services to 33 police and fire departments and operates the largest emergency radio system in the province.
said Thiessen. He added that most of the clients that come to his organization are dealing with some kind of traumatic hurt. “It’s a hurt they can’t deal with straight up. It’s a hurt that they’ve had to use some sort of substance to mask or push down or medicate.” The program tries to dig down and discover
the source of the addiction, which is why it can take up to a year, he said. That’s one aspect of the program that Mission Mayor Randy Hawes believes is important. “You have to be able to figure out what’s behind their addiction,” he said adding that the Hope For Freedom Society appear to be doing just that.

OPINION
Published & printed by Black Press Ltd. at 33047 First Avenue, Mission V2V 1G2
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
An unexpected ally
Those opposed to Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Expansion Project have a government in their corner and it’s not the one you might expect. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals were elected, in part, on promises of more respect for the environment and more respect for science. As with most things related to Liberal promises, it was all vague and difficult to pin down, but more respect for the environment and science was a plank in the catch-all platform of change that appealed to a country that had clearly tired of Stephen Harper and the Conservatives. The B.C. Liberals (not related) have been known for their free-enterprise feel, a friend of industry and natural-resource extraction. Premier Christy Clark is all in when it comes to liquid natural gas extraction, production and transport, for example. On Monday, one of these governments publicly announced it could not
support Kinder Morgan’s project that would twin the line bringing heavy oil from Alberta to Burnaby, exponentially increasing the amount of tankers in the Strait of Georgia. That government? Clark and the B.C. Liberals. In 2012 the provincial government presented five requirements it said it needed filled before it would support any heavy-oil pipelines. One of them was the need for what it called “world-leading” marine oil spill response, prevention and recovery systems. On Monday, the province said Kinder Morgan has not satisfied that requirement. While the prime minister has been very public about his opposition to the Northern Gateway pipeline proposal, he has been vague about his stance on Kinder Morgan. It will be interesting to see if these governments end up in a battle where they find themselves on unfamiliar sidelines. – Black Press

Avatar sequel bombs in Walbran Tom Fletcher
B.C. Views Avatar, the future-fantasy blockbuster that beat Titanic as all-time Hollywood box office champ, has finally been unseated by the latest Star Wars space opera. I watched Avatar on TV over the holidays for the first time since its 2009 release, and was able to see past the bombastic special effects to examine it for what it is, an anti-capitalist propaganda film. A psychopathic military commander teams with evil mining executive to blast and slaughter their way to a chunk of rare mineral, ridiculously named “unobtainium.” Giant tree, home of highly evolved Na’vi people and their delicate jungle ecosystem, is toppled for sadistic fun and profit, before nature’s collective strikes back. Canadian director James Cameron helped the global anti-development network use the movie in its celebrity attack on the Alberta oil industry. Now the story line is being employed again in
B.C., in an effort to revive the 1990s “war in the woods” that led to the creation of Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park on Vancouver Island. Protest tactics are being refined. Targeting just outside the boundary of the vast park established 20 years ago, giant trees are named and an Avatar-style narrative of unbridled greed is spoon-fed to urban media. There’s a “Tolkien Giant” now, although I’m reliably informed it is not one of those trees that gets up and walks around in the Lord of the Rings movies. This tree is also protected from logging, as are most of the poster trees used for propaganda and fundraising. The network uses multiple front groups. Vancouver-based Wilderness Committee stages urban protests and issues news releases, while Ecojustice lawyers fight forest company injunctions against direct actions that disrupt legal logging. An employee of the B.C. branch plant of Sierra Club lurks, apparently coordinating media and protesters. A 1990s remnant called Friends of Carmanah-Walbran issued a statement Nov. 9 announcing “autonomous action” by three protesters to disrupt logging. Not their guys, you understand, just masked
individuals willing to lock themselves to equipment or wander into a road-building blast zone, forcing work to stop for safety reasons. These are among the actions that forced the logging company to go to court for an injunction.
There’s a ‘Tolkien Giant’ now, although I’m reliably informed it is not one of those trees that gets up and walks around in the Lord of the Rings movies. Cast in the role of evil corporation is TealJones Group, a B.C. forest company trying to operate in what is now the most environmentally restricted forest in the world. It keeps about 2,000 people employed in logging and its sawmills in Surrey, where investments have been made to handle second-growth coastal timber as well as what little old-growth they are allowed to harvest. Protesters have dubbed their latest target, the tiny 3.2 hectare cutblock 4424,
“Black Diamond Grove” for media and fundraising purposes. Teal-Jones forester Chris Harvey provided me some information to counter protester claims. Block 4424 isn’t being logged, although it was permitted last fall. Protesters are targeting other operations, none of which are in the contentious Walbran “bite” area next to the park. Teal-Jones has not only received permits and worked with environmental organizations, its operations are independently certified by the Canadian Standards Association. A B.C. Supreme Court judge granted an extension of the injunction protecting Teal-Jones’ operations on Jan. 4. The judge wasn’t swayed by protesters packing the Victoria courtroom, and upheld a 50-metre safety zone around working equipment in the Walbran Valley until the end of March. A Wilderness Committee spokesman with no evident forestry qualifications was appalled. He will no doubt continue to issue news releases and write his own version for left-wing fringe publications that seek to perpetuate an urban culture of revulsion for logging. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

YOUR VIEWS Wishing Santa thieves a very bad new year RCMP efforts much appreciated To the Grinches that stole our blowup Santa on Dec. 27 at approximately 8:30 p.m. in a black wagon-type vehicle from our seniors complex, we wish you a very bad new year. It’s bad enough that you steal from seniors, but you stole the

A simple sign is all truck drivers need Since living out in Deroche, I have seen three logging truck rollovers. The latest was a death. These drivers drive some of the worst backroads in the country. Coming into Deroche from Mission, there are a dozen signs warning of the turn going out of Deroche. There is not one sign telling of this tight corner. This is where the trucks flip. Don’t these fine logging truck drivers and others drivers of semis like me deserve a simple sign showing a tipping truck to just remind the truckers? What’s it going to
take – a truck flipping on to a loaded car, God forbid, to put up a
simple sign? Don’t forget about the truckers. We think

Charges recommended against Reptile Guy BCSPCA currently working with owner to rectify concerns about care Kevin Mills Mission Record
The BCSPCA has recommended animal cruelty charges against Mission’s The Reptile Guy Rescue and Education Centre, owned by Mike
Hopcraft. Marcie Moriarty, chief prevention and enforcement officer for the BCSPCA, confirmed the recommendation this week and said more charges may be sought. “In virtually any case

where we do seize animals, our role as the investigation agency is to prepare a report to Crown counsel. We have done that,” she explained. The charges are being recommended under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. While one set of recommendations has already been presented, a second set will go in shortly. Moriarty said it could take several months before hearing back from Crown counsel. Court documents – the search warrant and information to obtain a search warrant – were made public by an animal activist group and state that in June 2015, the SPCA received a complaint
from an ex-employee at the reptile centre, including photographs of animals in distress. The documents list a series of concerns following several inspections. The allegations include animals enclosed in unsanitary conditions, dead animals, underweight animals, animals without water, a fungal infection, overcrowding and animals in critical distress. Other concerns included small enclosures, inappropriate lighting and heating, and exposed wiring. According to the documentation, a mountain horned dragon was found dead, with its eyes eaten out by crickets. Two bearded dragons were seized, “one was
found to be emaciated and had four broken legs,” according to the court documents. The dragon was euthanized. The second dragon was also emaciated, according to the allegations. Moriarty said the BCSPCA is currently working with Hopcraft. “There were some outstanding orders with respect to animals in his care and he has had a veterinarian out to examine the animals and he’s complying with the veterinarian’s recommendations.” She added that unless the BCSPCA receives additional concerns, they will just be following up to ensure that animals are not in distress. “Our role is to en-
sure, whether you are an individual or a business, whether you own a cat or an iguana, it is receiving care and remaining free from distress as the law requires.” Hopcraft is declining to talk to the media. But on his Facebook page he said he wanted to clear up some of the allegations. On the claim there was a bearded dragon with four broken legs, Hopcraft wrote, “To my and my staff’s knowledge, there was no such bearded dragon and we are not sure where that information is coming from.” He added there is a “huge difference between broken limbs and limbs affected by metabolic bone disease,” saying a vet may
diagnose it as fractures depending on the severity of the condition. As for the overcrowding concerns, Hopcraft said there is a “double standard.” He wrote, “Are some of my animals overcrowded and being kept in enclosures that are too small? For a long-term situation, yes. “Our isolation snakes are kept in smaller enclosures as they are not here long-term. This is the same as the SPCA keeping adult cats in 2x2x2 cages or dogs in 6-8 foot cages. Is it ideal? No, but it is what is necessary in order to take in the animals and find them new homes.” He also addresses more concerns in his post.

If you have been injured in a car accident, slipped on an icy sidewalk, or fallen down your neighbour’s stairs, you may wonder how the court will assess your claim. Once it’s been determined that someone else is responsible for your personal injuries, another part of the lawsuit is the assessment of your losses, called “damages.”

More than $6,000 raised for food bank Meeting community needs is the primary goal of St. Joseph’s Food Bank. Ron Leger, a local business owner and volunteer leader at the food bank said it is all about community support “The community of Mission has a strong reputation and eagerness to care for others and share in this cause. It is encouraging and truly inspires others to help others,” said Leger. Leger said one notable event and example of this community engagement was a “brew and burger” evening in December at the 14th Avenue Pub. This event resulted in them handing over a cheque to St. Joseph’s Food Bank for $6,477.94. Pub owners Danielle and Lloyd Slack were proud to be involved in this fundraising event, both adding this was a project that so many were eager to be involved to support those in need through the St. Joseph’s Food Bank. Danielle said this has been an easy connect, adding that a tour of St. Joseph’s Food Bank was an “eye-opening experience” that allowed her and Lloyd to see real need and caring shine through.

Outlaws riding a four-game winning streak After kicking off 2016 with a loss, the Mission City Outlaws are rolling, and are now riding a four-game winning streak. After defeating Port Moody 3-1 on Jan. 2 and knocking off the Aldergrove Kodiaks 6-2 on Jan. 6, the Outlaws played two in a row on the weekend. The Outlaws hosted the Langley Knights on Saturday, and blasted them 7-0. Mission fired 69 shots at the Langley goalie, and scored three goals in both the second and third periods. Goal scorers for the Outlaws were: Ryan Sharma (two), Bryce Pisiak, Baylee Wright, Noah Wiebe, David McGowan and Justin Bowerman. Mission defender Nicholas Thompson added a trio of assists in the win. The game got chippy in the third period, with two players on each team getting ejected following fights. Mission goalies Jeffrey Veitch and Joshua Matzek combined for the
shutout, stopping a total of 13 shots. The Outlaws then traveled to Burnaby to take on the Grandview Steelers on Sunday in a much closer game. Wiebe opened the scoring the first period, and the lead stood until there was 3:09 left in the third period, when the Steelers tied the game up. However, with just 1:27 left, Bowerman grabbed the lead back for the Outlaws and secured the 2-1 win. Outlaws goalie Joshua Matzek stopped 23 shots to earn his very first Pacific Junior Hockey League win. The pair of wins improve the Outlaws to a record of 24 wins, 11 losses and one overtime loss. Mission also vaulted over the Abbotsford Pilots to retake first place in the Harold Brittain conference. The Outlaws return to action on Saturday, when the Ridge Meadows Flames come to town. Faceoff is set for 6:45 p.m. at the Mission Leisure Centre.

Coding camp linked to BC Tech Summit Students can learn from experts Kevin Mills Mission Record
Grade 9 students from Heritage Park Secondary will be tapping in remotely to a seminar being put on during the BC Tech Summit. On Jan. 19, the students will take part in the two-hour session. Lighthouse Labs will offer the educational seminar for the first hour direct from the BC Tech Summit. Following that, the students will be given a project. At that time, Mission’s SRCTec, along with I-Open Technologies and the Mission school district, will work with the students to mentor and guide them through a coding project. “Coding camps are typically much more intense, said Ray Szabada of SRCTec. He explained that they want to make this experience a bit more fun for the Grade 9 students, who will be working on coding a mini space game. “Using the principle of basic programing, they will be able to go in and modify, personalize and customize a single game into something they can play on their own and with their friends. He said it’s a way of seeding a potential career in programing and game design. SRCTec staff will also be present to give the students support in knowing there is a valuable tech community network in Mission. Szabada said the significance of this event is promoting and growing the local tech economy. “If we are going to attract investment, then there must be a strategy for ensuring there is a skilled technical workforce locally. He said it is a first and initial campaign to start generating and promoting excitement around the tech sector.

This past year, significant trail work was accomplished in Mission and Chilliwack. The trail Bear Buns
?
on Mission’s Bear Mountain was given a new take on an old trail. This 1.2 kilometre long trail was completed through 300 to 400 volunteer hours. In Chilliwack, Sunny Side Up was completed on Vedder after two years’ hard work from the organization and volunteers. During the 2015 season, the FVMBA ran an outstanding race series. The Trailblazer Race Series ran three
races throughout the valley. Each race saw 80 to 100 participants, both male and female, with a few pro-level riders. The AGM will feature guest speaker Daniel Scott, a trail building master planner. The AGM is set for Sunday, Jan. 17 at 4 p.m. at the Work Here: Professional Coworking Space, 22674 Dewdney Trunk Rd. in Maple Ridge. Everyone is welcome.

$26,000 raised to fight cancer Another fundraiser set for Jan. 23 Why do our law enforcement and emergency services officers commit to months of arduous training and embark on a journey away from their families and friends for nine days? Why do organizations, businesses and ordinary people pledge to raise thousands of dollars? They do it to be a part of Cops for Cancer and show families who have a child with cancer they do not have to face their journey alone. The money raised go towards pediatric cancer research and Camp Goodtimes. In September, 23 riders took to the roads and highways of the Fraser Valley. They rode for more than 800 kilometres in nine days, from Boston Bar to Tsawwassen and back. This year, in Mission, organizers and participants went above and beyond, raising more than $26,000 thanks to the passion and dedication of the three local riders and the volunteers at the Mission unit office of the Canadian Cancer Society. They engaged community members, schools and business in an effort to raise awareness around childhood cancer and money for research and Camp Goodtimes. This past year Camp Goodtimes welcomed 377 participants to camp, including 166 kids currently on a cancer journey. Robbie Burns’ Supper Another fundraising event is set for later this month. The annual Robbie Burns’ Supper and Dance takes place on Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. at Chartwell Cedarbrooke, 32331 7th Ave. Tickets are $40 and are available by calling the Canadian Cancer Society office in Mission at 604-820-3166.

HOLD YOUR TONGUE A wise friend of my father had a rule about speaking, which was to always ask before saying something if it was true, if it was kind, and if it was necessary. He was a man of few words, but very highly thought of by family and friends. Most of our daily conversation would fail his test, especially on the grounds of kindness and necessity. The test of necessity is perhaps the hardest to pass: will the words I am about to utter be helpful or edifying. Think about how much of our conversation is about our own ego, trying to make ourselves seem clever while knocking down those around us. Once spoken, words can’t be taken back, and even if we do retract them they are like the bell that can’t be UN-rung. Our words often come back to haunt us. People will remember things we may have said in an offhand manner years before, and like a sharp-edged boomerang, our words have come back to take our head off. So, we should think twice before speaking, and consider whether what we are about to say is true, kind and necessary. – Christopher Simon Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. — Ephesians 4:29 SUNDAY WEST HEIGHTS 9:30AM-Remembrance Meeting GOSPEL CHAPEL 11:00AM-Family Bible Hour & Sunday School 32060 - 7TH Ave., Mission 826-6915 OR 826-7979

JAN/FEB MISSION EVENTS ...
Arden coming to the Clarke Theatre Jann Arden is bringing her musical talents to Mission on March 18. The Canadian singer will perform at the Clarke Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the event go on sale on Nov. 27. The concert is in support of Arden’s latest release, Everything Almost. One year later, with the release of Living Under June, she had her career break-out hit Insensitive, which solidified her position in the music world. To date, Arden has released 12 albums with 19 top 10 singles, including Could I Be Your Girl, Good Mother, Will You Remember Me and Wonderdrug. Her most recent album, Everything Almost, was released in 2014, peaking at #2 on the Canadian Billboard Chart. The show is presented by Rock. It Boy Entertainment and Gee Dan Productions. Dodge Charger is a modern four-door muscle car
‘‘
’’
The 2016 Charger uses a TorqueFlite eight-speed transmission mated to a 3.6-litre Pentastar V-6 engine, which effortlessly generates 292 horses. And it’s a muscle car with mean fuel economy numbers – 12.8/8.6 L/100 kms. The tester’s Rallye Group option with its one-of-a-kind cold-air induction system, sport-tuned exhaust and engine calibration teases another eight horsepower from the V6. The deep throaty exhaust note whisks one back to the 60s when the Airplane’s Grace Slick was also in good voice and I had hair. No surprise that the freeway cruising was fun additionally aided and abetted by the three steering modes: Normal, Comfort and Sport. To be honest, I really didn’t get the chance to put the all-wheel drive system to the test but it has to be a bonus for suburban drivers encountering winter weather on their commutes. But does it play nice as a town car? – In the main yes, though the coupe inhibited view can make supermarket parking a challenge. The V6 did not disappoint. Of course, if you want muscle on steroids then you might want to take a look at the Charger SRT Hellcat model with its supercharged 6.2-litre HEMI Hellcat engine. It produces 707 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft. of torque and a top speed of almost 330 km/h. A slightly tamer option is the Charger SRT 392 model, powered by a 6.4-litre 392 HEMI V-8 engine, delivering 485 horsepower and 475 lb.-ft. of torque. A quick mention of something I doubt was ever a consideration in the old days: the Charger offers more than 80 safety and security features!

TEICHROB John John Teichrob, late of Abbotsford, BC, passed away January 10, 2016 in Chilliwack at Cascade Hospice at the age of 95. He was born to David and Maria (Unruh) Teichrob in Nikolaidorf, Siberia on April 20, 1920. The family emigrated from Russia in 1925, first settling in Mexico and then in Canada in 1928. John accepted the Lord as his Savior in 1938 and was baptized in 1939. John trusted God for grace and strength and to guide him one day at a time. John met Helen Unrau in 1941 and they were married on June 26, 1943. They farmed in Minto, Man. for 3 years before moving to BC in 1946 where John continued farming. They joined the Matsqui MB Church where he volunteered in numerous capacities, such as building maintenance and treasurer on the church board. In 1975 they joined Central Heights MB Church in Abbotsford where John continued to find ways to offer his skills in volunteer service. John and Helen were blessed with 5 sons and 1 daughter. John was a hard worker, managing numerous occupations at one time, and had an energetic love for life. He loved his family dearly and would do anything for them. He enjoyed camping, playing and watching sports, and having the family home for dinner. Retirement gave John more time to do these favorite activities, as well as developing his craft in woodworking. John and Helen enjoyed life together at Menno Terrace in Abbotsford for 3 ½ years before Helen passed away in June 2011. Predeceased by his infant son Victor, 3 brothers and 1 sister, John is mourned by children - John (Elsie), Rudy (Carol), Len (Irmi), Henry (Rose), Carol (Joel) Bancroft, 16 grandchildren (& 11 spouses) and 23 great-grandchildren. A Service of Celebration of his life will take place Friday, January 22 at 1:30 pm at Central Heights Church in Abbotsford. Dan Unrau (nephew) officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to MCC would be appreciated. Online condolences to the family may be made to:

Thomas Edward (TED) September 17, 1952 ~ January 4, 2016 After a courageous six year roller coaster ride with cancer, Ted died closely encircled by his devoted family. Ted was born in New Westminster to Sydney and Laura Perry. He grew up loving all sports, lettering in high school soccer and tennis and playing high level baseball. Ted also had an early passion for categorizing, documenting and studying current events. This evolved into many lifelong interests including stamp collecting, genealogy, outer space and the completion of two degrees in history, a B.A. from UBC (DKE fraternity member) and a M.A. from Western Washington University. Given Ted’s positive personality, his natural sense of humour and his capacity for teamwork, it was inevitable that he found his calling in education. Ted was proud to have been a teacher, a coach and a principal in the Abbotsford School District for 32 years until his retirement in 2011. Ted leaves a heartbroken but uniďŹ ed family behind him, including his wife and best friend Susanna, treasured sons Fraser and Ian, sister Lee Perry (Rich Helmer), brother Dave Perry (Bea), sisterin-law Mhairi Dunnett (Duncan Millar), nephews Roy, Graham and Ross Millar and brother-in-law Rick Jewell. Ted predeceased his late mother-in-law Annette Dunnett, a kindred star gazer, by only three days. Ted will also be forever missed by lifelong friends and travel mates Rod and Elaine Livingston, Owen and Valorie Pawson, Barb and Bob Saunders, Stan and Doreen Petersen, as well as the Citadel boys and many other friends in Vancouver, Abbotsford and Crescent Beach. Ted’s genuine, upbeat and steady disposition made him the best kind of husband, father, brother, friend, colleague, mentor and teammate, and entirely lovable. Ted believed in generously serving others through community involvement and he role modeled this. Ted participated actively in the sports communities of both Abbotsford and Crescent Beach over the past thirty years, and only very recently resigned as President of The Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame and as a long standing member of the tennis committee at the Crescent Beach Swim Club. The last year of Ted’s life epitomized his optimism, his uncomplaining nature and his ability to ďŹ nd fun wherever it existed. Ted continued to regularly play tennis and oor hockey, never missed a UBC Men’s Volleyball match, hosted his annual crib tournament at Crescent Beach and took road trips with his best friends. In September, he packed up his immediate family and took them to Europe for the trip of a lifetime. Over and over Ted said “I’m having a great lifeâ€?. Above all, Ted was a family man who never missed an opportunity to encourage and support his beloved Sue, Fraser and Ian. He adored them, was utterly proud of them, and the feeling was mutual. To love and be loved is to feel the sun from both sides (D. Viscott). A Celebration of Life will take place in Abbotsford on Sunday January 17th at 3:30 pm, reception to follow. Location: University of the Fraser Valley, Student Union Building (SUB), Great Hall, 33844 King Road.
