SPRING/SUMMER 2015 – campbellrivermirror.com
Welcome to
Nature’s Playground! Campbell River is Vancouver Island’s gateway to nature’s playground with a treasure trove of summer vacation possibilities. Our welcoming community, mountains, lakes, rivers and our oceanfront draw thousands of vacationing travellers from around the province, the continent and the globe. Visitors quickly appreciate that finding something new and exciting to do is a given. The challenge is deciding what to do first. Discover amazing holiday options available right inside our city limits! Visit the widely acclaimed Museum at Campbell River, the Maritime Heritage Centre, the Art Gallery and the Tidemark Theatre, the Pier Street Farmers’ Market, Spirit Square concerts and Canada Day celebrations – which draw thousands of visitors and locals. Grab an ice cream at Discovery Pier where anglers, young and old, can try their luck. Campbell River offers miles of walking trails along the oceanfront and through protected forests. Most of these trails and pathways are wheelchair accessible. With numerous provincial parks, campgrounds and beaches there are opportunities for saltwater and freshwater anglers, wildlife watchers, kayakers, alpine hikers and rock climbers.
Proudly poised at Parallel 50, Campbell River sits at the crossroads of an unparalleled natural playground. The original latitude marker (N 50° 00.006 W 125° 13.829) was built in 1974. Campbell River shares this same north latitude with Sept Iles, Quebec; Plymouth, U.K.; Frankfurt, Germany; Prague, Czechoslovakia; Krakow, Poland; Kiev, Ukraine; Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia and the open Pacific Ocean. The city has a population of 36,096 (2011 Census) and enjoys a moderate climate year round. This climate enables year round opportunities for adventure. We feel Campbell River has something for everyone. Rivers, lakes, rainforests, hiking trails, wildlife, snow capped mountains and gorgeous beaches are just a few marvels this area has to offer. We celebrate the rich history of this area as well as the arts and culture that have been passed down through generations. Our alpine to ocean landscape is a place you will want to visit again and again. People come here to play. From fishing charters, snorkeling, swimming, diving, golfing, mountain biking, hiking, whale watching, camping, kayaking adventures, restaurants, spas and pure tranquility....
we have it all!

All species of Pacific Salmon pass through the waters between Campbell River and the Mainland as they return to spawn in their native rivers. Campbell River is also the jumping off point for great West Coast open ocean fishing with Nootka Sound northwest of Gold River providing some of the best Chinook and Coho fishing on the entire coast of British Columbia. Campbell River is also proud to be the base of operations for many of the finest fishing guides in BC. Traditionalists will want to check out the Tyee Club of BC located on Spit Road. It began in 1924 with a group of anglers who returned to Campbell River each year in pursuit of the elusive Tyee, a Chinook salmon, 30 pounds or larger. Tyee fishing is done quietly in a small, classic row boat. No motors are allowed in the Tyee pool. The rower will slip the boat into the currents and eddies while keeping a basic plug or spoon beating in the current. If a fish is boated and weighs 30 pounds or more, the catch is recorded and the angler becomes a member of the Tyee Club. For more information: www.tyeeclub.org

HIKING
The Campbell River region has more hiking trails than you can shake a walking stick at. Here’s a sample that runs the gamut from easy to extreme. Some easy hikes include:
Canyon View Trail (6 kms) – This is a well maintained loop trail that winds along the banks of the Campbell River. One highlight is an 80 foot suspension walkway that spans the canyon and offers spectacular views of rapids and spawning salmon.
ground on Highway 28. At the end of the path is a viewing platform directly across from the falls that receives some mist from the falls.
Lower Myra Falls (1 km) – Beautiful cascading waterfalls are the reward at the end of this short hike. You can walk/climb up and down the falls and swim in some of the calmer pools. Travel Highway 28 and take Westmin Road south to the Lower Myra Falls parking lot.
Quinsam River Trail
Lady Falls
(2 kms) – The trail starts at the playground area in the Elk Falls campground and follows the Quinsam River upstream. The Quinsam Salmon Hatchery is approximately 2 km from the campground.
(1 km) – This easy 20 minute round trip walk to the falls is just past the Buttle Lake Camp-

Mellow and mind blowing mountain bike trails Close to the city the Pump House Trail is located between Iron River Road and the Campbell River and features easily accessible, well-marked single-track trails. Get onto Highway 28 and turn onto the Duncan Bay Main and cross the Campbell River. You’ll find one trailhead just south of the intersection of Duncan Bay and Iron River Road and another located west of Duncan Bay Road on Iron Bay Road.
The Campbell River region with its superb terrain is blessed with numerous mountain biking trails that range from easy family tracks to difficult back country trails that will challenge the toughest rider.
The Snowden Demonstration Forest west of Campbell River and north of Highway 28 near Loveland Bay Provincial Park offers more than 30kms of trails suited to all levels of expertise and includes the Frog Lake and Lost Lake trail systems. Trails are usually two to eight kms and frequently intertwine. Some of the easier routes follow old rail beds that have been rehabilitated as recreational trails. Beginners should check out the Beaver Lodge Lands near the North Island College campus. Old rail grades, logging roads and hiking tracks make for an enjoyable tour through tall trees. Drop into the Visitors’ Centre at the Tyee Plaza beside Spirit Square and pick up some trail maps.

SHORELINE ARTS Chainsaws buzzing, wood chips flying – that sounds like work. Not at Willow Point this summer. This is the sound of gritty artists transforming logs into art works and it is an enormously popular event with locals and visitors. Starting June 24 to June 28 Campbell River Shoreline Arts Society presents the 19th annual “Transformations On The Shore” Chainsaw Carving Competition. This five-day event brings novice, amateur, semi-professional and professional carvers to the shoreline of Willow Point where they transform cedar and fir logs into works of art. As many as 25 carvers will

sculpt and shape their logs using chainsaws, mauls, knives, chisels and various custom tools until a new creation is released from the heart of the wood. The finished sculptures are displayed in various parks and sponsors’ premises for everyone to enjoy year round. One of the favourite features of the event is the one hour “Quick-Carve” on Saturday, June 27 at 1 p.m. These quick-carvings are placed in a silent auction for the public bidding. Spectators can also purchase a raffle ticket and win a carving. www.crshorelinearts.ca

CAMPING Bursts of moonlight bouncing off a rippling lake, campfire sparks rising on the heat like miniature fireworks, kids turning marshmallows into flaming balls of sugar – summer camping is great just about anywhere. Campbell River is the gateway to the Discovery Islands group, an unparalleled paddling area. There’s nothing quite like a saltwater kayak for exploring remote islands and uninhabited coves. This quiet mode of travel often allows you to get much closer to marine and land wildlife than if you were on foot or in a motorized craft. Bring your own kayak or rent one from a local shop, lessons and guides are available. You can chart your own journey or sign up for an eco-tour. Canoeing is also popular-the Sayward Forest Canoe/ portage route is a 50 kilometre (30 mile) circuit encompassing eleven lakes, and takes approximately 3-4 days to complete the full circuit. We recommend doing the route counter-clockwise from summer to early fall. Numerous B.C. Forest Service Recreation sites are located along the route that provide adequate overnight camping facilities. Popular put-in spots are: The Campbell River Spit, Gosling Bay on Campbell Lake, Morton Lake, Strathcona Dam, Loveland Bay, Forbes Landing and McIvor Lake.

DOG PARKS

Penfield West Dog Park
The park runs from Joanne Drive to the corner of Hilchey and Dogwood and links the Penfield neighbourhood with the Beaver Lodge Forest Lands and the Dogwood Bike Path. It has a paved path running the length of the park, irrigated lawn areas and park benches. The east end of the park features a children’s playground and the west end of the park features Campbell River’s first fully-fenced, dog off leash area. If you plan to visit the dog park with your furry friend please note that dogs must be vaccinated and licenced, older than 4 months, friendly and social. Owners must keep their dogs in sight, under voice control and scoop the poop.
4x
Black Creek Dog Park
The park is located at the Canine Conduct Training Grounds. The park is 1.25 acres with trails throughout. It boasts a 50x50ft fenced training/ play area where groups (small dogs, puppies, etc) can meet with double-gated entries. This is a “Members Only” Park. Dogs wearing shock/choke/prong/spray collars are not permitted, owners must have use force-free and humane methods of training. A dog park is a wonderful place for social dogs to meet and play. But, it can be a very scary place if dogs that do not know how to play appropriately are permitted into the park.

STRATHCONA PARK
The stairway to paradise starts at Strathcona Park! Strathcona Park is the largest provincial park on Vancouver Island as well as the oldest – founded in 1911. The park is home to the highest peaks of the Vancouver Island Ranges. From the Golden Hinde to the accessible Mount Albert Edward, people come
from all over the world to explore this outdoor mecca. For beginners seeking that first toe hold to seasoned veterans pushing their limits, the park offers topography that ranges from inviting to downright scary. The main access to Strathcona Park is via Highway 28. The main access route to Forbidden Plateau from Courtenay and Campbell River is via

the Paradise Meadows Trailhead at Mount Washington. Crest Creek Crag is another favourite. The local climbing community maintains the routes regularly. Routes include expert climbs and some easy routes for beginners. The Crest Creek climbing area is located near Crest Lake and Crest Creek on Hwy 28 (to Gold River). There are 19 crags with names like Black Crag, Pipeline Bluff, Narcissus
Wall and Skid Row. Gravel roads and short hiking trails from the parking lot lead climbers to the crags. Combine the crags and there are over 100 different climbing routes. Some of the trails are better maintained than others. Watch for exposed tree roots and loose rocks. There is a trail and crag identification map also in the parking lot.

Find the heart of Strathcona Provincial Park along the Gold River Highway (28). The first sign of the park comes at Strathcona Park Lodge, which sits just outside the boundary on the shores of Upper Campbell Lake. One of Canada’s oldest and best known wilderness lodges this is a great place to fill up on delicious food, go ziplining, challenge yourself in their high ropes courses, rent a canoe, hire a guide or just relax in one their cottages for rent. You quickly enter the oldest park in BC, Strathcona Provincial
Park, once you pass the Lodge where a you can enjoy a part of the park that sees few visitors. Discover disappearing waterfalls, hike amongst the giant trees of Vancouver Island and watch wildlife such as Bald Eagles, Black Bears and Roosevelt Elk. Trails can vary from a quick 15 minute walk from the highway or the multi-day trails can take you high into the Alpine for incredible views of the coastal mountains and ocean. Myra Falls, Karst Creek and Lupin Falls are a must and are easily accessible from Highway 28.

Others pursue perfection. We guarantee it. The only performance claim that truly matters is the customer’s. This is our conviction, and the Bulletproof Guarantee is here to back it up. When consumers purchase a covered product, they’re doing it at no risk. Because if it’s not everything we said it was – or if they simply don’t love it in every way – we’ll refund their money. That’s satisfaction guaranteed. Not just better products, but a better way of doing business.
