3 Facts You Need To Know About MSP & Healthcare Costs
1. Since 2002, spending on health has increased each year by an average of 4.5 per cent, while MSP rates have increased by an average of 2.6 per cent a year. Every Province has to collect enough from its citizens to pay the increasing costs of health care, regardless of what form of tax is used in each province. 2. BC charges a relatively small amount as a medical premium to remind us that healthcare is not “free”. MSP premiums fund only a small part of the significant investment government makes in health services each year. 3. Nearly one million British Columbia residents, including thousands of seniors, receive MSP subsidies. More than 800,000 residents pay no MSP premiums at all. That’s about 17 per cent of our population. Go to http://ow.ly/WOa5d for more information.

City stays quiet on most recent deer cull by Brian Coombs Some are calling it a ‘stealth cull.’ The Animal Alliance of Canada has said that the City of Cranbrook, in December, started a deer cull without the city notifying residents. The group sent a letter to Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, Steve Thomson, regarding the deer cull in Cranbrook, alleging cruelty in the cull. It has also sent a letter to The City of Cranbrook, pointing out infractions in how the deer are being killed versus what the permit allows the contractor to do. According to Liz White, a board member of the Animal Alliance
of Canada, the cull in itself was unexpected. “When we originally asked to participate in a translocation program and agreed to do so a number of months ago, I understood that there would be no culling in communities that were translocating,” said White. On the group’s website, wwwbcdeer.org, there are videos of fawns captured in Cranbrook clover traps. In one video it takes multiple shots with a bolt gun to kill the deer, which is then dragged away by its leg. The other video shows two fawns captured in one trap that was compressed for what the Alliance alleges was two hours before the contractor
showed up. “There are important reasons to not have a deer cull going when you are doing translocation trials,” said White. “To do a proper evaluation, you need to have all the conditions the same. If you have four municipalities and two are culling and two aren’t, this creates a problem for evaluation. We asked that the $10,000 go to GPS collars and that those taking part in the trial do not do any culling” In the letter the Alliance wrote to the City, it points out that there is no publicly recorded decision to proceed with a deer cull in the fall of 2015. “The municipality as the permit holder is responsible

PHOTO SUBMITTED
The Animal Alliance of Canada released videos of alleged cruel treatment of trapped deer. to ensure that the cull contractors comply. Lack of transparency by Council calls into question the commitment to proper enforcement of the permit given that the video footage and photos expose permit violations,” states the letter. The Animal Alliance gave $10,000 grants to Kimberley Invermere and Elkford to purchase GPS collars for a trial translocation deer. Cranbrook is taking part in the translocation trial, but has put in its own funds for the trial, along with funding from the Province. Invermere is also proceeding with a deer cull, but the Animal Alliance is not asking for its grant funding back from that municipality. The translocation trial is set to run from mid-February to midMarch. Smaller, lighter traps will be used that squeeze the animal from the side, allowing for a tranquilizer. Members of family units not caught in the traps will be darted so that the family will not be separated. The deer will be fitted with radio collars and moved out of town to an undisclosed location for release and tracking. White added that the current information on Cranbrook deer culls shows no clear pattern. The report, available on the City of Cranbrook’s website, relates that the high point of complaints about aggressive deer was in 2011, with 42 complaints, dropping to 19 by 2014. However, the actual amount of deer in the
city remains relatively unchanged, even with successive culls. In 2010, the report states that there were around 101 deer in the city, with that number rising to 104 in 2014. Ian Adams, senior wildlife biologist with VAST, the company doing the translocation trials for the municipalities, confirmed that Cranbrook is receiving no funding from the Animal Alliance and will be live capturing five deer from the city and giving them GPS collars before relocation. He added that the places where and exactly when the deer will be captured will be kept secret to avoid undue stress to the animals before translocation. Adams also stressed that VAST is not involved in any way with the deer cull. “That is what people have asked for,” said Adams. “The Animal Alliance is in support of the translocation and we are looking for non-lethal alternatives.” Numerous city councillors have been approached for comment and all have declined to speak on the deer cull or even if the cull was talked about at all in an in-camera session. Councillor Danielle Cardozo however, is in full support of the deer translocation. “Nothing has changed in that regard,” said Cardozo. “I want to see it happen and be successful. I would love translocation to be the answer.”

Views A snapshot of housing and the homeless Submitted by Gwen Noble, member of the Poverty Reduction Committee; a standing committee of the Cranbrook Social Planning Society. Homelessness describes people without shelter as well as those who are insecurely housed in emergency shelters, housing that does not meet public health and safety standards or other temporary accommodations. It also includes families and individuals whose economic situation puts them at imminent risk of homelessness. Our local situation is this: More than one in five Cranbrook residents face extreme housing affordability problems, meaning more than 50 percent of their income goes toward rent. With record low vacancy rates of 1.8 percent and the loss of 300 rental units since the mid-1990, Cranbrook rental situation has been rated as “poor” in BC’s Community Housing Index. A minimum of 125 additional housing units are needed to meet national occupancy standards in Cranbrook. With only an extreme weather emergency shelter open in winter months, Cranbrook lacks a permanent year round homeless shelter, despite the continued efforts of a very committed group of local service providers and community members.
In 2014/15 the local Homeless Outreach Program met with 161 individuals who were completely homeless on first contact, another 265 at significant risk of becoming homeless, and 32 who became homeless as a result of crises in their living situations. Client intakes have increased by 14 percent over the last year. Local waiting lists for affordable housing are also growing as vacancy rates fall below two percent. Opportunity does knock though. As well as the above mentioned emergency shelter committee and their continued efforts, Cranbrook is one of seven BC communities receiving provincial funding to increase innovation and sustainability in social and community service delivery. Ending homelessness in Cranbrook is identified as a priority. The vision of “Keys to Home” is one of community collaboration and partnership to ensure all individuals have access to a healthy, safe and affordable place to call home. Many communities in Canada are now tackling homelessness using Housing First. It is a proven approach that saves costs by moving chronically homeless individuals or families into stable housing so they have the opportunity to stabilize their lives. Every $10 spent on housing support for

chronically homeless individuals results in $21.72 savings in social services, health care, housing and involvement in the justice system (Canadian Mental Health Commission, 2014). Twenty percent of the homeless population is defined as chronic and accounts for 60 percent of overall system costs. Housing First is based on the concept that a homeless individual or household’s first and primary need is to obtain stable housing, and that other issues that may affect the household can and should be addressed once housing is obtained. This approach enables service providers to shift from crisis management to supporting more innovative and responsive approaches that support long-term reductions in homelessness. Housing First delivers benefits for the whole community, including: the chronically homeless, including families and youth, anyone at imminent risk of homelessness due to changes in economic or health status, improved public safety, coordination of homeless-serving community service and health care providers, and strengthening values of care, connection and dignity in the community. All residents are invited to attend meetings to become involved. Follow the Facebook page www.facebook.com/ CranbrookSocialPlanning/ where meeting details will be posted.
Letter: Council should apologize for secret cull Say it ain’t so, Cranbrook City Hall! I still have difficulty believing that mayor, city council and CAO would approve a clandestine deer cull (kill) in-camera without the taxpayers knowledge while telling the public they were going to translocate deer instead of killing them. Then carry out the cull spending taxpayers’ money doing it – and at the same time – accept plaudits from the many opposed to the cull including the Animal Alliance of Canada who offered to donate $10,000 to the
translocation program. Then when their sleazy, deceitful act was exposed in a video – yes, a You Tube video! – by the Animal Rights people and questioned by the media they stick their haughty noses in the air and say they don’t discuss sordid deeds like this in the media! But unless the sun has started rising in the west and setting in the east this is apparently what they did. And once again Cranbrook’s name has been darkened from coast to coast to coast. In his play Hamlet, Shake-
condemned council for what it had done starting with myself first. Never again, I said and it didn’t happen again during that council’s term. Instead we did surveys and studied the problem which didn’t do a hell of a lot of good either. But at least we didn’t hide behind the public’s back. So I challenge this council, the mayor and the CAO to do the right thing and apologize publically to the citizens of Cranbrook for your perfidy. In the circumstances, it’s the least you can do. ~Gerry Warner, Cranbrook

speare says “something is rotten in the state of Demark.” Well, I’m going to update the Bard and say unequivocally that “something is rotten at Cranbrook City Hall” and it’s time these representatives of the people fessed up. And oh yes, I have special knowledge of this situation and know how difficult an issue the deer situation is because I was a City councillor myself in the previous administration and foolishly made the same mistake myself of approving a deer cull in camera without telling the people. But when our council got caught in the act, I admitted what we had done, apologized to the public and

Advent Alternative Giving Project donates to Street Angel
PHOTO SUBMITTED
The Advent Alternative Giving Project raised $3,400 for the Street Angel program. (Pictured) Jackie Brown accepting the cheque from Reverend Yme Woensdregt. The Ktunaxa Nation and Cranbrook’s Christ Church are celebrating a successful fundraising campaign that raised more than $3,400 for the Ktunaxa Nation’s Street Angel program. The ‘Advent Alternative Giving Project’ was organized by Reverend Yme Woensdregt and the members of Christ Church in Cranbrook. The project encouraged people in the area to donate to Street Angel during the holidays at a time when the weather is cold and people are often in need of a hot, nutritious meal and a warm place to rest. “The generosity of people and businesses in our area never ceases to amaze me,” said Jackie Brown, Ktunaxa Nation Council Urban Services
Manager. “Thanks to the
exposure that Reverend Woensdregt’s column on the project received in local media, donations for came in from as far away as Ontario. In total, $3,464 was raised through the project for Street Angel.” “This partnership between the Ktunaxa Nation and Christ Church not only strengthens the relationship between our two organizations, it benefits the entire region through our Street Angel program,” said
Kathryn Teneese, Ktunaxa Nation Council Chair. “With the recent Truth and Reconciliation final report released and a number of ‘Calls to Action’ specific to Aboriginal people and
our relationship with the church, I am glad to see the Ktunaxa Nation and Christ Church working together in the spirit of reconciliation for the betterment of those who call Ktunaxa territory
home.” Operation Street Angel is a program run by the Ktunaxa Nation that provides services to homeless and vulnerable populations in the Cranbrook area including hot
nutritious meals, nurse practitioner and mental health services, advocacy, employment and justice services. Operation Street Angel is located at 46-17th Avenue South in Cranbrook.

Executive director to retire from EKFH after nearly 11 years
PHOTO SUBMITTED
Donna Grainger, the face of EKFH, is retiring.
There are some people for whom a job is more than position, or a career, or a place you go to for eight hours a day. For some people, it’s a purpose ~ a role that takes as much as it gives. It’s as much passion as it is duty. For Donna Grainger, who is retiring after 10 ¾ years with East Kootenay Foundation for Health (EKFH), the passion, the duty, the purpose, the giving and taking ~ and the people ~ are why her time as administrator and then executive director of EKFH were less career, more calling. Donna has been with EKFH since June 2005. The foundation provides funding to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital and other community health facilities in complementing the health care needs of the region. “The work that the foundation does literally changes people’s lives ~ including those of us who serve the foundation,” said Donna. “The EKFH is committed to the region and
all areas of care, and the people who make up the foundation are committed to making a difference to others and each other.” It was a difficult decision to retire but Donna said that she’s ready to spend some time travelling, taking up some new interests, being with her husband and becoming more mindful about her own health. She also believes that every role requires fresh energy, insight and ideas and that her retirement will provide new opportunities for EKFH. In her role with EKFH, Donna has been responsible for or involved with almost every aspect of operations for the foundation, including administration, marketing and fundraising. And during her tenure Donna has succeeded in increasing the visibility of the foundation as well as its involvement with the communities in the East Kootenay. The key to this is Donna’s belief that the foundation’s key role is

building and maintaining relationships rather than hunting for dollars. This philosophy has helped EKFH succeed in many innovative initiatives over the last number of years. Along with raising the profile of the foundation throughout the region, Donna has been involved with or led important projects such as the completion of a campaign for a mobile MRI, the Invermere Emergency Department Redevelopment Project, A Clear View campaign for a digital stereotactic mammography unit, the ICU Redevelopment Campaign; and currently the 8th annual Starlite Campaign which she states is one of the most rewarding and memorable initiatives in her time with EKFH. Although she takes great satisfaction in the success of all these projects, the digital stereotactic mammography campaign stands out to her for two reasons. First, the twoyear foal of $1 million was reached 13 months ahead of schedule. And, more personally, because the Faces of the Campaign ~ in which women from the East Kootenay who had been diagnosed with breast cancer shared their stories of struggle, hope and survival ~ connected real people in the region to the ini-
tiative. And at the end of the day, it was the stories of the people whose lives were affected by the work of the foundation that had the most impact on Donna. As executive director, Donna met with local, provincial and federal politicians. She often conferred with other directors of foundations, business owners and organizational chairs. She worked closely with members of the Kootenay ICE and local celebrities in several projects to raise awareness and funds for the foundation. All of these people brought great value to her work with EKFH, but it was often the people who flew under the radar that caught Donna’s attention and regard. “So many of the people who stand out to me in the last 10 ¾ years are the dreamers, the believers, the supporters, the leaders, the caregivers ~ those that know the true meaning of giving from the heart, for the cause and for others,” said Donna. “These are the men and women who are dedicated to sharing their talents in various fields of health care, the EKFH board and my colleagues ~ compassionate and caring people ~ who deserve praise.” The relationships and connections Donna has made throughout her
time with EKFH have sustained her professionally and personally. When her parents passed away in a short time frame, she found herself lifted up by the people associated with the foundation that she had worked alongside and in support of. When she retires, it is the warmth of these relationships that she will take with her. “I am so grateful for the kindness, support and generosity others have bestowed on me after the loss of my parents, the challenges of my own health journey with Type 1 diabetes and the times just when you don’t think you are making a difference,” said Donna. “You find yourself in the eyes of those standing in front of you, in the hugs of happiness and loss and those unspoken acts of kindness that take your breath away. I’ve held people in celebration and in loss and the impact and mark it leaves on my heart I really don’t think I could adequately describe. I have found myself being in the right place at the right time in my life’s purpose. I’m blessed.” Donna’s last official day at EKFH will be 31 March 2016 an executive search for her replacement is underway.
Denham Ford is very excited to welcome back Brent Caldwell as Sales Manager. “I am thrilled to be returning to Denham Ford. I look forward to taking care of our current customers as well as my previous customers. Come down and experience what the Denham Difference is all about!”

Genetic technique gets initial results against cancer er, Jennifer Strack described her shock at being diagnosed with aggressive lung cancer 18 months ago. Strack underwent five rounds of conventional chemotherapy with little effect, as tumours grew in her lungs and spread to her liver. Premier Christy Clark listens as Jennifer Strack describes her successful treatment for lung cancer. By Tom Fletcher The B.C. government is investing an extra $3 million to expand a program that tailors cancer treatment to the genetic makeup of individual patients. The B.C. Cancer Agency is ramping up its Personalized Onco-Genomics (POG) project after seeing encouraging results, including reversal of some cancers thought to be all but untreatable. Researchers cautioned that the technique isn’t a cure for cancer, but it has been effective in identifying drugs that can reduce a life-threatening condition to a manageable chronic illness. Dr. Janessa Laskin, the cancer specialist in charge of the POG program, said three quarters of the oncologists in B.C. are now participating in the program, selecting and referring patients from all over the province. The technique is “the future of oncology,” and the goal is to keep expanding it until every cancer patient can be assessed, Laskin said. Premier Christy Clark and Health Minister Terry Lake announced the additional funds at the B.C. Cancer Agency in Vancouver Tuesday. Clark said the intent is to increase funding further in the coming years for a program that is attracting international interest and financial support. The agency highlighted patients helped by the technique. A 41-year-old non-smok-
ing identifies drug that would otherwise never be considered. Zuri Scrivens was treated at age 33 for breast cancer, and when it reappeared two years later she was enrolled in the POG program. Her cancer went into remission after a diabetes drug was used in combination with a breast cancer drug. Since clinical trials began in 2012, more than 350 patients with 50 different types of cancer have had their

2016 Ford Mustang Overall: It might be new, but the Mustang is not resting; Ford goes hot-rodding with is reborn Shelby GT350 and track-focused GT350R models. Drivetrain: Base V6 and optional turbocharged-four and V8 engines are joined by a highrevving growling, snorting 5.2-litre V8 with well over 500 horsepower; six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. Just as the world was trying to come to grips with turbocharged four-cylinders in Ford’s latest Ponycar (a term coined specifically for cars in the Mustang’s class), the company comes out with go-faster Shelby versions. Although they use the same Euro-styling vibe that the Mustang exudes, the new Shelby
GT350 and GT350R are much meaner looking. Both cars get different hoods, front and rear fascia, lights and more, with the R version getting wilder fixed wings and aggressive aero bits. In a bid to save weight, the R also features the first production use of exotic (expensive) carbon-fiber wheels. The GT350 name recalls the original Shelby Mustangs road-course powerhouses. So, with that philosophy intact, the 2016 Shelbys use a special 5.2-litre V8 with plenty of hot-rodding techniques. At the heart of it is a special lightweight crankshaft with a “flat-plane” design (like in a Ferrari engine) that actually increases breathing efficiency. It sounds sinister, too, especially since you can zing

it past 8,000 revs per minute to get the peak 526 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is the only choice, and both versions get different levels of on-track performance goodies. In base Mustangs, the 3.7-litre V6 that makes a very respectable 300 horsepower and the 5.0-litre V8 in the GT with an output of 435 horsepower also remains unchanged. Slotted between the two is a turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder that’s rated at 310 horsepower. Every engine, bar the Shelby’s 5.2 V8, is available in the Mustang coupe and convertible with a cloth top. When the car launched for 2015, Ford ditched the Mustang’s stoneage solid-rear-axle setup and
replaced it with a more modern independent rear system (along with a new front suspension) that promised a better ride, improved handling in the corners and added interior and stowage space. The distance between the front and rear axles was also increased and the car sits a bit lower to the ground. The interior was also completely retooled with large round gauges and an equally sizable touch-screen that dominates the control panel. Of all the available options to be had on the Mustang, one of the more intriguing is a Track Apps package. It includes a “line-lock” feature that holds the front brakes so the driver can, in Ford’s words, “warm up the tires” (i.e. wear down the tread in a cloud of

Neck Pain
Having a pain in the neck isn’t just the territory of parents, it is becoming increasingly common among many Canadians regardless of whether or not they have children. A 2010 study found that the incidence of neck pain reported by office and computer workers is 23%. Another study found that as many as 65% of people have had an episode of neck pain in the last year. Neck pain is generally more common in women and in high income countries relative to low income countries. It is also more common in urban areas compared with rural areas. The 2010 Global Burden of Disease study found that neck pain ranks number 4 in the overall global burden of disease. The most common causes of neck pain are related to wear and tear arthritis. As the joint wears or as injury occurs, spurs form impacting nerve function and movement, not to mention causing pain. Whiplash injuries can stretch ligaments and damage nerves in the neck leading to hyper-mobility and chronic pain. In a whiplash, nerves are stretched and squeezed in the violence of the head movement. This nerve injury causes the nerve to
swell leading the nerve to become entrapped in the tight holes of the fascia through which the nerve travels. This nerve compression prevents the nerve from healing and causes it to send continuous pain signals to the brain. Poor posture and the natural process of aging can affect the integrity of the ligaments and tendons in the neck and also promote neck pain. If you have chronic neck pain from an injury or poor posture that has not resolved from massage or chiropractic therapy, you may benefit from perineural injection therapy (PNI). This simple and safe treatment directly treats the injured tissue, stimulating it to heal and regenerate. The treatment involves the injection of a dilute solution of dextrose and water, which bathes the nerve and promotes the release of a protein called nerve growth factor (NGF). NGF is a powerful molecule that helps injured nerves heal. Since all pain is mediated by the nervous system, PNI can be helpful in a variety of chronic pain conditions includes chronic neck pain. Treatments are typically done in 30 to 60 minutes and are easily tolerated by most patients.

staff and other agencies involved were limited in the time they could devote to this successful and necessary program. The call was answered by the Cranbrook Sunrise Rotary Club, who continues to support the event by taking on a leadership role in this worthy endeavour. Sunrise Rotary member, Lorinda Nelson, took on the Angel Tree project in 2014, as well as 2015. Lorinda chairs the committee that makes things happen in order to bring the project to fruition. Lorinda says, “I have chaired this project for a couple of years now and am responsible for the distribution of the registration forms to different organizations, as well as recorded the information once we receive the completed registrations.” The recording process is a detailed one and involves compiling a spreadsheet of every family and each child within that family. Also, included in the recording process is information regarding age, gender, sizes of clothing and gift ideas. “I assign a code to each child registered so that their identity is not revealed when we fill out the angel cards that are hung on the tree,” says Lorinda. Lorinda goes on to say that the Angel Tree is then decorated with angel cards that hold the information of each
child and the ‘good citizens of our community.’ In addition, some local businesses and community groups contribute and record their names on the Gift Giver record. Lorinda gives an account of events, by stating that this year as in every other year, the Angel cards are selected and assigned within a week of placing them on the tree. When the gifts are bought, they are delivered to the Cancer Society gift wrapping table, where they are wrapped. The gifts are then stored by the Tamarack Centre until it is time for distribution, just before Christmas. “We have a group of Sunrise Rotarians that help sort the gifts by code and then we distribute the gifts to the families,” Lorinda said. A hearty congratulation goes out to the Sunrise Rotarians and their families that helped with this most worthwhile project this year, which yielded 108 Angels on the tree, representing 43 families. Those Rotarians are: Lorinda Nelson, Penny Coyle, Shelley Balfour, Maggie Lindsay-Tadey, Megan Tadey, Mark Pinnell, Dennis Parsons, Mel McFarlane, Rick McFarlane, Shirley Gibbon, Bill Gibbon, Dewayne Penner, Janice Sommerfeld and Arlene Schroh.
Interested in learning more about ideas, influences and trends in the visual arts? Relax in the casual atmosphere of Studio64 to watch a movie and share the guided discussion afterwards. Centre64 begins its Friday ART Movie program on January 22, at 7:30 p.m., with the visually stunning environmental art film, ‘Andy Goldsworthy: Rivers and Tides’. This 90-minute award-winning film explores the famed artist?s ever-inventive works made outdoors with found natural materials like leaves, branches, flowers, rocks and ice. Goldsworthy speaks of ?collaborating with nature? with his site-specific land art. He also accepts his work?s
fleeting and ephemeral quality, which he captures at the height of beauty with his brilliant photography. This film should be of interest to environmentalists, lovers of nature and art enthusiasts. The remaining Friday ART Movie nights (7:30 p.m. start) are: February 19: ‘Georgia O?Keefe’ (from the Great Women Artists Series); March 18: ‘Eames: the Architect and the Painter’, and April 22: ‘Picasso and Braque Go to the Movies’. Admission is by donation. Light snacks provided. No host bar. The Kimberley Arts Council/Centre64, is located at 64 Deer Park Ave., Kimberley. Visit www. kimberleyarts.com.

BCTF head to top court
Herbs from the kitchen counter to the dinner plate
By Tom Fletcher The B.C. government’s 14-year legal battle with the B.C. Teachers’ Federation over staffing levels will go one last round at the Supreme Court of Canada. The top court announced Thursday it will hear the union’s appeal of last year’s decision by the B.C. Court of Appeal that the province didn’t violate bargaining rights with its 2002 legislation setting class size and special needs support. Education Minister
Eating fresh food in Winter Fresh personally grown produce is hard to find in February. A way to have the satisfaction of eating personally grown food is to dress your winter dishes with herbs that you can grow on your windowsill.

Start from Seed - You can easily start your own indoor herb garden from seed this time of year. If you are starting from seed, use a quality potting mix like Nurseryland Indoor Potting Soil. Avoid using regular garden soil, as it is too heavy for container growing without amending it. Which one to choose - For indoor gardening, consider choosing compact or dwarf varieties to fit smaller spaces. Creeping herbs like oregano or thyme are much easier to maintain than dill or cilantro. You can plant a medley of herbs in one pot, but you will need to harvest the more aggressive plants often in order to keep one herb from taking over the whole pot. must present coupon
more snacks to eat and more quickly. Liquid fertilizers are easy and great to use, such as Dutch Treat Seaweed fertilizer. Also, you can use an all purpose fertilizer like 10-10-10. A few hot pics - Basil is a favourite in many kitchens. Basil likes lots of sun and warmth, so definitely place the pot in a south-facing window. Thyme and oregano are also great herbs to try. Thyme will grow in an east- or west-facing window. Parsley is a versatile herb that gives a great top dressing to eggs in the morning or a perfect garnish for supper. Experiment - Eating habits can change with the seasons. By experimenting with fresh herbs, your cooking habits will change as your palette thirsts for fresh taste even in winter. Share - Once you get a few herbs growing, they may produce more growth than you can eat. If you are visiting a friend, family member or neighbour, asking to see if they would appreciate some fresh grown herbs helps everyone get over the winter blues. One of my secret indulgences is to rub them in my hands and breathe in the uplifting scent.
Container - For indoor use, you can use a variety of containers to fit your needs. You can use a pot with hole and a separate tray, a pot with an attached tray, or insert a pot with holes as a cache pot into a pot without drainage. Using a cache pot removes the need for a tray and recovers easily from accidental drowning your plant. Sunny Spot - Most herbs will do well in a south-facing window. If your herbs have long stems and small leaves, it means the herbs desire more light. T5 Grow Lights are easy to install in most situations. They come in 2`, 3`, or 4`lengths to fit your space. You want to see vigorous growth and compact leaves for a more frequent
harvest. Watering Needs - Water your plants regularly to keep the soil moist, but never soggy. Water should be saturating the entire pot without any water sitting at the bottom. Watering will be periodical at first, but will increase as the herb matures in the pot. Feeding the Herbs - Regularly feeding your herbs will produce
Till next time… happy indoor gardening.

Wildsight Kimberley/ Cranbrook is presenting Arthur Lo of Insightful Healthy Homes, an experienced net-zero builder from Vancouver, as the next speaker in their Net-zero Energy Building Speaker Series. Arthur will be presenting a four-hour seminar for professionals from 1-5PM in Kimberley and an evening presentation for the public at 7:30PM in Cranbrook. “Arthur will be sharing his wealth of knowledge gained from more than two decades of experience building energy efficient buildings in Canada,” said Wildsight’s Lars Sander-Green. Arthur’s current projects include a market-oriented net-zero townhome project (a BC first) and a Living Building Challenge home covering all seven sustainability goals. He’ll be sharing details about those projects, as well as older projects like his 2010 Net-zero Harmony House and net-zero ready homes in the Lower Mainland. Arthur is an experienced building educator, having worked on training programs with Canada Mortgage and Housing, Natural Resources Canada, and the Canadian Home Builders Association. Arthur also worked as an engineer on numerous infrastructure projects in his native Hong Kong before coming to Canada. “Our series is approved as continuing professional development by BC’s Homeowner Protection Office, so this is an opportunity for builders to learn about leading edge net-zero building construction, while also covering some of their required training hours,” added SanderGreen. “For the public, our evening session is sure to provide inspiration about net-zero buildings that produce as much energy as they use.” The professional seminar runs from 1-5PM at Centre 64 in Kimberley with a cost of $25. Interested members of the public are also welcome to the afternoon session. The public session starts at 7:30 p.m. in the see Net-Zero page B11

with teachers, and the latest five-year negotiated settlement shows “government’s relationship with the BCTF has never been better.” The agreement came in 2014, after a long, bitter strike that saw the government send out $40-a-day child care payments to 230,000 families for 13 school days lost due to strike action in the fall. BCTF president Jim Iker said the latest appeal offers a chance to restore the 2002 class size limits and specialty teacher ratios, but the union won’t wait for another court proceeding to press its demands. “A month from now, the B.C. Liberal government will deliver its 2016 budget,” Iker said. “Enrolment is starting to increase after years of decline and we know that there are more students with special needs, refugee students and others with unique needs entering the system.” Bernier declined to comment on the details of the case, with another court action on the horizon. “B.C. students rank first amongst all English-speaking countries in reading, science and math in international testing,” Bernier said. “We will keep working with the BCTF so students benefit from making our great education system even better.”

Edna “Mary Mann Mary was born November 10, 1921 in Hull, Yorkshire, England to George & Alice Hanson. She passed away peacefully at the EK Regional Hospital on January 10, 2016 at the lovely age of 94. Mary began a 43 year career at Harland Printers at the age of 14. She worked her way up from the factory floor to Head Cashier and took much pride in her employment there. Mary was a member of a local cycling club and toured much of northern England and parts of Scotland by bicycle. In her mother’s later years Mary looked after her at their home until her mother’s death at the age of 91. Mary moved to Canada, and particularly to Cranbrook, in 1979 at the age of 57 after marrying Thomas Mann. She resided in Cranbrook the remainder of her life. Mary and Tom, along with beloved dog Bobo, enjoyed many camping adventures throughout BC, Alberta & northern Washington, Idaho & Montana. Camping was a new experience for Mary and one that she embraced. They did travel back to the UK as Tom was also born in Hull, England. Upon her arrival to Cranbrook, Mary became very involved with the Christ Church Anglican Parish and served as Secretary for a number of years. She was an avid and talented knitter and many enjoyed her perfectly knitted socks. She also enjoyed gardening, especially loving her roses. Mary will be sadly missed by stepdaughters Patty & Jo-Anne Mann & Robin (Scott) Sudo as well as granddaughters Lindey & Lacey Sudo, nieces Mary Dunn & Susan (Stephen) Bateman, nephews Stephen (Joy) Hanson, Richard (Linda) Hanson, Kelvin (Gem) Coe, Bruce (Margaret-Anne) Hanson, Ross (Jenny) Hanson, Robert (Frances) Dalton, David (Carolyn) Dalton and many great nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her parents, George & Alice Hanson, brother Guy and sister-in-law Betty Hanson, brother Wally and sister-in-law Linda Hanson, husband Thomas Mann, nephew Andy Dalton and her niece’s husband Arnold Dunn. A service will be held on Friday, January 22, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Christ Church Anglican, 46 – 13th Ave. S., Cranbrook, B.C. with a reception to follow in the Church Hall. As per Mary’s wishes, her ashes will travel to Hull and be laid to rest in a family plot during a service to take place in June, 2016. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to may make a donation to the Salvation Army, 533 Slater Rd., Cranbrook, B.C. in Mary’s memory. Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to McPherson’s Funeral Home.
OBITUARY
MADDEN, Denis 1949 – 2015 It is with great sadness that the family of Denis Richard Madden Sr., born January 16, 1949, announces his passing on Tuesday, December 29, 2015. Denis was born in Ontario and later moved to Calgary, Alberta; where he met and married his wife of ten years, Terry Madden (mother of Denis and Lindsay). Denis’s life was dedicated to music. Our father was happiest on stage, entertaining. He had a deep love of music and performing, and was an extremely accomplished life-long musician. Denis loved watching his grandchildren do anything that made them happy and particularly encouraged the musical spark that is within them. Papa’s face would light up any time that they were around him. Denis’s family will remember him for the respect that he had for his children, for his love and fondness for his in-laws, and for all of the young ones. We will also remember his talent, his creativity, his light-hearted nature, his corny jokes, and above all his literal need not only to socialize, with everyone and any one, but to bring joy, laughter, and to entertain them. Our father chose the path that felt right to him. He followed his passion while in this world and he shared it with anyone that wanted to be part of it. He never judged people poorly, nor allowed the judgments of others to define him. Papa was strong of character, and very, very comfortable being himself. He would teach anyone a song or how to play an instrument, and encouraged people to do what felt right to them as well. He was a wise man, and was never concerned with conformity to anything that he did not believe in with his heart. We will miss his wild story, and his wild stories. He was an artist, in every sense. Born one, lived it, and died one. He played for us the day he died. His song will be missed forever, but sung forever by his loved ones. Denis will be lovingly remembered by his son and daughterin-law, Denis and Shannon Madden, his daughter and son-in-law, Lindsay and Jay Quintal, and by his daughter, Jennifer VanderSchaaf; as well as by his grandchildren, Megan, Nick and Alex VanderSchaaf, Baily, Jovee, Dawson, Mila, Lexi, and Jack Quintal; and by his great grandchildren, Aubrey and Liam Colborne (Megan’s children). A Celebration of Denis’s Life will be held at Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer, Alberta, on Sunday, January 17, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Cremation has taken place. Condolences may be sent or viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com. Arrangements in care of Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer. 403.340.4040.

Garbage advisory
The City of Cranbrook is reminding residents about the three (3) garbage bag limit per household allowed to be collected each week. For collection in excess of three garbage receptacles, including plastic bags, tags are available for purchase at City Hall for $1.50 per tag. Garbage should be placed out for collection by 7:30am on your collection day. Routes and pick up times may be changed without notice. The Solid Waste Collection and Disposal bylaw also limits the size of receptacles (either containers or bags) to 100 litres and receptacles cannot weigh more than 20 kilograms each. Garbage containers are to have a water tight cover and smooth rim, must be in good structural and sanitary condition and have fixed handles. Plastic bags are to be securely tied closed at the top and be strong enough to withstand normal handling and lifting. The bylaw also states that all garbage must be packaged up, cleanly and neatly. Garbage must not be loose inside the garbage containers in any manner or your garbage will not be collected. If plastic bags have been torn apart by rodents, dogs or other causes, it is solely the responsibility of the property owner/occupant to collect scattered garbage and refuse in order to place it in a new container/plastic bag.
