When the chaos and destruction of World War II came to an end in 1945, over 20,000 Dutch residents had starved to death under the German occupation. Their liberation at the hands of Canadian soldiers was a time of overwhelming euphoria, and many left their destroyed country behind to start new lives overseas. “The whole of Europe was in shambles. Over 100,000 Dutch people left for Canada and came here. They wanted to leave behind that pile of rubble,” the Capitol Theatre’s Stephanie Fischer told the Advertiser, while discussing the upcoming play Liberation Days. It will be performed between March 3 and March 6. Written by Calgarian playwright Dave Van Belle in 2014, the story is based on the experiences of his parents, who were young children when Holland was liberated. When Fischer was looking for scripts about the war, that was the one that grabbed her. “This all really started with the federal government putting forward money to commemorate the First and Second World Wars,” she said. “That money became available for all kinds of things — theatre productions, sculptures or community engagement projects.” Though the Capitol Theatre produces an annual pantomime and youth theatre during the summer, this will be the first
show produced by the Capitol since Fischer took the executive director job three years ago. “For me personally, the whole issue of the second world war was interesting to me because I’m German, and I grew up learning a lot about it. Germany in my opinion has done quite a good job in not letting the people forget what happened during the Nazi regime.” But she didn’t want to rehash the same familiar story lines. “I wanted to tell a story that was not well-known to Canadian citizens, so I did a little research on war plays that are more contemporary. When I read David Van Belle’s play, for me it had everything I was looking for in terms of producing a play at the Capitol.” That means it addresses war and brutality, but it also takes time for a love story. It takes place in a small village where a Canadian private named Alex King falls for a local Dutch woman named Emma de Bruijn. “It’s about how the people were impacted by the war. You’ll see in the play that there were people both positively and negatively impacted. It felt like something not too heavy — it has war and heroes — but it also has a lightness.” Van Belle is planning to attend the show, which Fischer believes will be only its second production since he wrote it in 2014. As part of the project she’s also engaged local filmmaker
Amy Bohigian, who will be working with youth to film the rehearsal process and the eventual show. “We’re also connecting with schools in the Nelson area and we’ll work with teachers to encourage them to talk about Liberation Days in social studies, then we’ll have a free school showing on one day during the run.” A filmed copy of the production will be given to all schools in the area to integrate into their theatre and social studies programs. The show will be directed by Pat Henman, who recently directed Hedwig and the Angry Inch after a lengthy car accident recovery. Fischer said she’s thrilled to have her on board. “Pat read it and got immediately passionate, like I am, about the project.” The play has been cast, and will feature Lindsay Clague and Eli Geddis in the lead roles of Emma and Alex. Jordana Champagne, Michael Calladine, Laurie Jarvis, Geoff Burns and Michael Graham fill out the rest of the cast. Fischer said the play will be a unique experience for audiences. “This play encapsulates a moment in time when joy, life, freedom and the hope for the future came back into the life of the liberated and the liberators after a grueling war in which more than 60 million people lost their lives.” “Liberation is celebration,” she said.

Selkirk College helps build careers in metal fabrication
Freeman’s is looking for an honest and hard-working individual to join our crew.
Tyler Hwalstad knew from a young age that his future was in the trades, but once he discovered the challenge of working with metal he was hooked. Having completed the Metal Fabricator Foundation Program at Selkirk College, Hwalstad is now working his way through a metal fabrication apprenticeship at Rossland’s Columbia Steel Fabricating & Welding. With an opportunity to build on his training in the community he grew up in, the 21-year-old is excited about a future in his chosen trade. “One of the great parts about being a fabricator is that it’s always changing and it’s always different,” says Hwalstad. “You get different jobs and different drawings, then you have to build it. Some of it is repetitive like drilling holes, but you don’t do the same thing every day.” Hwalstad attended Trail’s J.L Crowe Secondary where he started to dabble in the trades through courses offered at his high school. After graduation, he enrolled in Selkirk College’s 24-week Plant Operator Program which is based out of Nelson’s Silver King Campus. In a shop area with the Millwright/ Machinist Program, Welding Program and Metal Fabrication Program, Hwalstad had a chance to take a closer look at other pathways. After completing the Plant Operator Program, Hwalstad spent some time working in the industry before deciding to switch gears. Last year, he returned to the Silver King Campus to take both the Welding Foundation Program and the Metal Fabricator Foundation Program.
“What attracted me was making something out of nothing,” he says. “You have this pile of steel and you have to make something out of it.” A trade with a bright future Metal fabricators build, assemble and repair products made of steel. The application of the trade is seen in a wide variety of manufacturing and construction industries. Metal fabricators can work for fabrication and welding shops in the manufacturing of structural steel, boilers, heavy machinery and transportation equipment. The work of a metal fabricator is often intricate and requires an individual who pays attention to precision. It’s a Red Seal designated trade under the Industry Training Authority (ITA) which allows individuals to travel and work all across Canada. “This is a trade that has great potential for the future,” says Selkirk College’s Rob Schwarzer, Chair of the School of Industry & Trades. “It’s applicable to so many different industries and the work is extremely rewarding.” Before arriving to Selkirk College to teach at the Silver King Campus, Schwarzer spent 18 years in the metal trades. He is part of a team of trades’ instructors who bring vital knowledge and training to the next generation. “The teachers at Selkirk College are awesome, they made the course interesting,” says Hwalstad, who was taught by both Schwarzer and Welding Program Instructor Colin Makeiv. “It’s also very apparent that the instructors at Selkirk
College care about you and you get to establish a real connection.” Selkirk College provides two levels of training The Metal Fabricator Foundation Program is currently accepting applications for a February 1 intake. The 23-week program prepares learners for entry level positions. Students engage in a variety of classroom and shop activities where they learn theoretical principles of the trade in the classroom and then apply their knowledge in the Silver King Campus shop where they master the skills employed in the fabrication of steel structures, vessels, tanks and equipment. With demand for more training based in the West Kootenay-Boundary, Selkirk College has added the Metal Fabricator
This is a permanent part-time position for someone who is familiar with the agricultural industry and enjoys working with the public. The right person will be physically capable of lifting and loading feed, proficient with point-of-sale transactions, and have a healthy sense of humour. If this sounds like you, please drop off your resume!
A graduate of the Selkirk College Metal Fabricator Foundation Program, Rossland’s Tyler Hwalstad is working on his apprenticeship. Apprenticeship Program which enables those working in the industry to get the required technical training. The fiveweek program begins on March 29 where training will take place full-time. Activities include classroom sessions where apprentices learn theoretical principles of fabrication which are then applied in shop sessions. “We are pleased to add the apprenticeship program which will allow people to get their Level II certification close to home,” says Schwarzer. “This is the first time we

are offering this level and we expect interest to be high.” As Hwalstad continues to gain more experience at Columbia Steel Fabricating & Welding, he will be taking a break to get his formal training as he works towards becoming a journeyperson. “Selkirk College is local and I love living here, there is no reason to leave,” he says. Italian-Canadian internment exhibit opens in Trail TRAIL – The stories are dramatic, shocking and unheard of in today’s vision of Canada. But back then the brutal impact of internment carried out by our government at wartime would ripple through generations. After three years of planning, the Trail and District Public Library brought “Ordinary Lives, Extraordinary Times: Italian Canadian Internment Experience,” to the city on Jan. 10, and is showing it until the end of March. Trail is the only city in Western Canada to display the exhibit which is on loan from the Columbus Centre in Toronto. The stories are filled with emotion, suffering and perseverance. It was a quiet Monday afternoon in 1940 when government authorities swept the home of Christine Demarco’s grandfather and hauled him off to an internment camp. Carmine Demarco was 17 when he came to Canada in 1902. He was naturalized in 1907, then briefly returned to Italy to fight for the Allies during the Great War. Demarco returned home to Ontario when the war ended in 1918 and served as president of a group of WW l battalion veterans. He married, began raising three children, and ran Demarco’s Confectionery, a family business that Christine likens to Trail’s Star Grocery. “All across Canada at approximately 1 p.m. that day (June 10, 1940) RCMP and local authorities identified and raided Italian homes,” Demarco said. “They entered my grandparents’ store, their home, searched it from attic to basement, and arrested him without warning and without explanation
The display, on loan from the Columbus Centre in Toronto, offers personal accounts from those who lived through the Second World War as enemy aliens and the impact on the wives and children left behind. The exhibit will be on display, free of charge, at the Trail memorial Centre until March 31. Sheri Regnier photo

From there, Demarco was sent and confined in Petawawa, one of four Italian Canadian internment camps in Canada. “During this time those who feared any connection in association with our family boycotted the family business…store windows were soaped with humiliating messag-
es and threats,” she said. “Many prominent Canadians, including doctors, lawyers, a few German farmers were interned, even the Mayor of Montreal, who was in the same hut as my grandfather.” Demarco, who lives in Rossland, spoke to a crowd of invited guests at the opening of the exhibit. Hundreds of Italian Canadians, including seven men from Trail, were taken from their homes, separated from their families, and Continued on A9

Hockey fans bolster Selkirk College food bank
A weekend food drive at a pair of Selkirk College Saints hockey games scored valuable resources for the Selkirk College
Food Bank. The student-initiated food drive took place at the Castlegar & District Recreation Complex on
January 8 and 9 where the Saints were kicking off the second half of their British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL)
season with a pair of exhibition games against North Dakota’s Williston State. Over the two days, the food drive collected

Cash donations were also received which will be used to purchase foods more familiar to international students. “This went beyond our expectations,” says Jane Green, an instructor in the Selkirk College Classroom & Community Support Worker Program. “We are grateful to all the generous hockey fans who contributed to this important student service at the college.” On Friday night, students in the Community & Classroom Worker Program, Early Childhood Care & Education Program,
Social Service Worker Program, and Human Ser vices Diploma Program volunteered collecting food items. On Saturday night, it was students from Selkirk International who took the lead. “One of the great moments of the weekend was when Deb McIntosh from the Castlegar Community Harvest Food Bank showed up with a carload of items to donate,” says Green. “It really shows how important the connection is between the community and the college. It was very touching.” The Selkirk College
Food Bank provides confidential access for students. It is available on all campuses/extension centres and can be accessed by contacting the students’ union or campus manager. Donations are always accepted at any location. The Saints helped round out a successful weekend by defeating Williston State 12-3 on Friday and 7-2 on Saturday. The Saints will now travel to the Lower Mainland this coming weekend where they will take on Trinity Western University, Simon Fraser University and the University of Victoria.

held in prison or remote camps during World War ll. The Canadian government claimed they were threats to national security, fearing many had ties to fascist Italian organizations. Some were released within a few months, and others remained in custody up to five years. Those listed from Trail are Ermando Cecconi, Eugenio Della Lana, Augusto Secco, Pompilio Di Vito, Silvio Romano, Ennio Vittorio Fabri and Fioravante Tenisci, a Cominco worker sent to Kananaskis then Petawawa for three years. No interned Italian was ever charged or convicted of any war-related crime. “The exhibit reveals part of our nation’s and this community’s history, which is literally unknown,” said board chair Barbara Gibson, during the opening reception. “We are thrilled to be able to bring it to Trail because the culture in this community, in large part, is made up of the descents of those people who immigrated, put down their roots and stayed here.” “Ordinary Lives, Extraordinary Times…” can be viewed on the

Improving the places that keep our residents moving Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) is pleased to announce a new granting program that will provide financial help to groups and organizations wishing to construct new recreation infrastructure or upgrade existing infrastructure. Recreation Infrastructure Grants will offer $3 million per year over the next three years. The grants will help fund improvements to structures and spaces like backcountry trail networks, swimming pools, ice rinks, curling arenas, sports fields and parks — encouraging Basin residents to live more active, healthy lifestyles and supporting recreation tourism in the region. Groups can receive up to 70 per cent of project costs, to a maximum of $500,000 (there is no minimum). “Residents have told us that recreation and physical activity are important to them both in terms of lifestyle and health,” said Neil Muth,
Valemount’s mountain bike suspension bridge, over Swift Creek, is helping foster community recreation and health. This project was funded in part by the Trust. Submitted by CBT
CBT president and CEO. “We’re pleased we can quickly address their needs and wishes by acting on this priority. Substantial support like this will help create significant benefits in communities.” While the Trust has always supported these

kinds of projects, the new grants will allow it to do so on a larger scale in a relatively short time period. The program is the result of considerable public consultation, during which the Trust learned about the importance of recreation and physical activity and committed to increase opportunities in this area. Read more about this priority and others in the Trust’s Columbia Basin Management Plan at cbt.org/cbmp. To apply, proponents should contact Rick Allen, manager, special initiatives, to discuss their project: 1-800-505-8998 or grants@cbt. org. If eligible, proponents will then be emailed an application form. To be considered for the first intake, application forms must be submitted by March 14, 2016. There will be another intake in July. Learning skills to save lives
ROSSLAND — Participants at Saturday’s Avalanche Awareness Day learned skills that could help them save lives in the event of an avalanche. Rossland and District Search and Rescue (RSAR) hosted the event at Red Mountain, offering participants hands-on avalanche safety gear clinics, and clinics on building emergency snow shelters and digging snow pits. RSAR, South Columbia Search and Rescue, and Castlegar Search and Rescue volunteers also showed participants how to start a fire, form a probe line and profile snow. It’s extremely important for those
South Columbia Search and Rescue volunteers practiced using a transceiver. Chelsea Novak photo who travel in the backcountry during the winter to learn what to do in an avalanche. “How would you feel if you’re
out with somebody and they got buried and you realized you didn’t practice and they passed away? So what you want is to learn these skills so that they’re going to put you in a position of saving lives,” said Dave Braithwaite, search manager for RSAR. Those who spend time in the backcountry and are considering taking a full avalanche course can learn more at the Canadian Avalanche Association website, www.avalanche.ca. One hundred twenty-ninth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Sometime in the 1980s a movement was afoot to change the name of Nakusp to Nakusp Hot Springs, following in the footsteps of other hot springs towns like Ainsworth, Harrison, Radium, and Fairmont. However, old-timers objected to the idea and it was abandoned. In October 2003, then-mayor Bill Cowan resurrected the idea and sought input from residents. “This is a good opportunity, as all the maps and brochures will be redone over the next few years because of the Olympics,” he said, pointing to potential tourism benefits. Nearly a year later, a new committee appointed to oversee development of the hot springs was asked to gather public opinion on changing the village’s name. In February 2005, Tad Derbyshire asked village council to consider changing the name. He presented a petition with 119 signatures and a letter of support from the Chamber of Commerce. But then-councillors Karen Hamling and Janis Dahlen
A name can define a community, and for many it seems, Nakusp is more than just a hot spring. ARROW LAKES NEWS
called for the matter to go to referendum. It quickly became apparent that the nays outweighed the hays. Bea Anton led a delegation to council to oppose the change and ask for a commitment that it be put to a public vote. “Public outrage and the emergence of a counterpetition against a recent proposal that would see the Village of Nakusp change its name to Nakusp Hot Springs has led council to more fully explore the potential costs associated with such a decision,” the Arrow Lakes News wrote. “While council had been generally receptive to the proposal, that support has now been tempered somewhat by public feedback questioning the need and motivation for the name change.” Cowan said he wanted the public fully informed, but worried that a referendum could cause rifts in the community that “take a long time to heal.”
“What I look at is the two million or more vehicles passing the Highway 1 and 23 intersection at Revelstoke, not even noticing the Nakusp sign on the way by, yet put the words ‘hot springs’ after Nakusp and it will catch the attention of some,” he said. An editorial in the Arrow Lakes News read in part: “For many people it seems, there is more than just the name of the village at stake in the recent proposal to change the name Nakusp to Nakusp Hot Springs. There are also historical issues and a debate as to what it is that defines the village itself as such an unique place. For others, the village’s very identity has been called into question. “The debate has become, in part, a reflection and discussion about how the village perceives itself and how it wants to be viewed by others. A name can define a community, and for many it seems, Nakusp is more than just a hot spring. “No issue in recent memory has stirred such a public and outspoken response. But a debate requires two sides, and those who support changing the name have been silent on the issue so far.” The referendum results were beyond lopsided: eight in favour and 607 against. By contrast, when Ainsworth changed its name to Ainsworth Hot Springs in 1964, there was little fuss.

Annual fishing derby focuses on family GRAND FORKS — The focus is on family at the 5th Annual Wilgress Lake Ice Fishing Derby. The derby, to be held
over the Family Day weekend Feb. 6-8, will be held at the easily-accessible Wilgress Lake between Grand Forks and
Greenwood. It’s right off Highway 3 with room to park at the rest stop. Prizes and trophies will be awarded to anglers in
a variety of categories; however, for those who don’t care to fish, the derby features a popular snow-carving contest
and snowshoe races for the kids. There are prizes for those events as well. Want to try ice fishing

for the first time? “For those who would like to fish and don’t have equipment and rods, come and see us at the booth and we will help you,” said Greg Sterling, one of the event organizers. Last year, the ladies took first and second place. So this year the men have their work cut out for them. “Last but not least is our ever-so-popular ‘For the Love of Fishing Valentine’s Draw’,” Sterling added. “This great idea is a chance for the fisherman to bring home a super gift basket filled with many items from all our super merchants of Grand Forks. It’s just not about fishing, it’s about our loved ones
as well.
