SERVING MISSION SINCE 1908
Charitable donations stolen Thieves break into the Mission branch of the Canadian Cancer Society Kevin Mills Mission Record
There has been another break-in in the Mission area and this time the Canadian Cancer Society is the victim. Late Saturday night, thieves smashed the front door of Mission Barbers on Logan Ave. After obtaining a small amount of cash from the barbershop, the intruders then smashed through the wall into the adjacent empty store and punched a hole
into that wall to get inside the Cancer Society office. The thief or thieves appear to have crawled through the small hole and ransacked the charity’s office. The intruders managed to steal gift cards, donated prizes and some cash. According to Allen Mugford, the regional director for the Canadian Cancer Society, when you factor in the damage done to the building as well as the items and cash
stolen, the break-in will cost the charity about $3,500. “It’s unfortunate that a charity, which is trying to support the community and the cancer causes is targeted,” said Mugford. Most of the items taken were “gifts of the community” and were supposed to be auctioned off at next week’s Robbie Burns’ Supper and Dance fundraisers. Despite the theft, Jimmy Logan, president of the Mission location of the Canadian
Cancer Society, said the fundraiser, set for Jan. 23 at Chartwell Cedarbrook Retirement Residence, will continue. The event supports pediatric cancer research and Camp Goodtimes which is for children with cancer. Tickets to the event are $40 and are available by calling 604820-3166 Mission RCMP are investigating the crime but no suspects have been identified at this time. Continued on A5
MISSION IN THE MOVIES
Actress Shenae Grimes-Beech exits the driver side of a car and slams back door into an assailant as a film crew grabs all the action. Downtown Mission was buzzing with activity on Sunday morning as filming for the new movie White Hot took place in front of the post office. Crews were filming a hostage escape and shootout scene which featured police cruisers screeching to a stop, a shootout and more. The crew has been filming the Hallmark movie in various locations in Mission all last week. BOB FRIESEN PHOTO

Busiest year on record Firefighters respond to 1,902 incidents in 2015, up 30 per cent from last year Kevin Mills Mission Record
Mission Fire Rescue responded to 1,902 overall incidents in 2015. That’s a 30 per cent increase from 2014 when crews responded to 1,433 incidents. Mission Fire Chief Larry Watkinson released the information on Monday during a council meeting. “It was the busiest year that we have had in the history of the fire department,” he said. Of those 1,902 incidents, 816 of them (44 per cent) were medical calls, 739 (39 per cent) were fire-related and 324 (17 per cent) were rescue situations. Watkinson explained the remaining 23 incidents were calls directly to the department asking for help with routine situations like someone being locked out of their house and asking for help. The fire chief told council the increase in calls is likely due to the community growing in size, busier roads and more traffic coming through the municipality.
Coun. Jenny Stevens raised concerns about the high number of medical calls, asking Watkinson if firefighters are dealing with situations for which they are not trained. “Our firefighters, on a regular basis, are put in situations where they are beyond the scope of their training,” he replied. He explained his members are there for critical intervention until BC Ambulance personnel arrive. Firefiighters are permitted to stop bleeding, do chest com-
pressions, clear airways and other critical life interventions. However they are not permitted to transport patients, give medications or break the skin. Mayor Randy Hawes said that puts firefighters at a huge disadvantage if a patient is having an allergic reaction as they are not permitted to administer an EpiPen shot. But Watkinson said while firefighters stay within “their scope of practice,” if a firefighter “broke policy to save a person’s life,” he would defend that

action. Continuing with his report, Watkinson told council that in 2015 there were 16 investigations into significant fires in the area, with an approximate combined value of $3,521,100 in losses caused by the blazes. Other occurrences in 2015 included: ❑ 830 fire inspections; ❑ Hiring of three new full-time firefighters; ❑ 476 homes visited during smoke alarm campaign; ❑ 71 smoke alarms installed.

My House a success Kevin Mills Mission Record
The Mission Youth House, nicknamed My House by those who use its services, has performed beyond expectations. That’s the message Calvin Williams of Youth Unlimited brought to council on Monday night. Williams came to council to provide an update on the project. Located on Proctor Lane, behind the Mission C o m m u n i t y Services Society, My House is a centre dedicated to WILLIAMS serving vulnerable youth in Mission More than a dozen community partners create a “true spirit of co-operation” at the centre, said Williams, who added 20 volunteers lend their time on a regular basis.
Williams told council that many youth say they are happier in life because of My House. “We have up to 20 youth, age 14 to 25, who come to My House each day and they represent the most vulnerable in our community.” On a typical day, three youth may be homeless and sleeping outside, six are couch surfing and others are in an unstable situation according to Williams. He said approximately five youths a day access the showers and the laundry while all the youth access the food. Another benefit of the My House program is that it allows youth workers to make connections with youth. Williams explained that volunteers and professionals are able to help youth to acquire financial assistance, get back to school or reconcile with parents. “Up to 90 per cent of all youth at My House are suffering from substance abuse,” he added.

New cell tower proposed for Steelhead area District of Mission to host public consultation meeting on Jan. 27 Kevin Mills Mission Record
Mission could soon be home to another telecommunication tower. An application has been filed by Cypress Land Service Incorporated, on behalf of Telus, to construct a new 60-metre
tower at Red Mountain, located on Dewdney Trunk Road in the Steelhead area. O r i g i n a l l y, Rogers Communications had agreed to co-locate on the proposed tower site, but has decided to pull out of the project. The site is located on Crown
land and is largely removed from residential uses or views. According to the staff report, Telus wants to construct the tower to “maintain and improve high quality, dependable network services” in the area. Although Industry Canada has the jurisdiction to license tele-
communication towers, the district will still consult with the public regarding the new proposal. Public consultation will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 27 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Steelhead Community Centre (32971 Cardinal Street) in Mission.
In addition, Cypress Land Service has contacted the Steelhead Community Association, the Mission and District Rod and Gun Club and the Fraser Valley Mountain Bike Association regarding the tower and how it could impact those groups.

Mission Barbers and the Canadian Cancer Society are the latest commercial properties to fall victim to thieves. The Mission RCMP remind people to take precautions. KEVIN MILLS PHOTO
Take steps to protect your business From A1
Sgt. Shaun Wright said this break and enter is similar to several other commercial break and enters over the last few months. According to the Mission D ow n t ow n business Association, 19 break-in or attempted break-ins have occurred in the past few months in that area alone.
The RCMP are reminding the public of the importance to assist police in addressing this issue by taking basic steps to help prevent commercial break and enters. Those steps include: ❑ Having a monitored alarm system and good quality video surveillance assists in both deterring these types of crimes and helping police identify sus-
pects in the unfortunate event that they do occur. ❑ Installing common security measures such as security gates, security window film and secure shutters are methods of “target-hardening” that reduce the likelihood of break and enters occurring. ❑ Cash, no matter how small the amount, should not be left in businesses after hours.

OPINION
Published & printed by Black Press Ltd. at 33047 First Avenue, Mission V2V 1G2
Fundraiser continues despite recent break-in On Saturday, the Mission branch of the Canadian Cancer Society is hosting a Robbie Burns dinner and dance. It’s a fundraiser to help kids cope with the battle against cancer. Money raised will go to pediatric care and Camp Goodtimes, where ill children and their families can go to have some family time and just feel normal. It’s a noble cause, but this year’s event has a shadow hanging over it. Earlier this week, some heartless thieves broke into the Mission Cancer Society office and stole cash donations, donated gifts and gift cards. Many of those items were slated for a silent auction, part of the before mentioned fundraiser’s activities. And while the event will still go on, the break-in has delivered a blow to organizers.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK Does Mission need another new cell tower to improve local coverage?
It appears as though Mission has experienced a large number of breakins in the past few months. In Downtown Mission alone, there have been 19 break-and-enters. While the Mission RCMP is doing everything it can to find the perpetrators, it’s up to the local business owners to protect themselves as much as possible. Alarm systems, window bars and other precautions are the best bet to stop those determined to steal. All that being said, it doesn’t help replace the items which the cancer society has lost. Only the kindness of supporters can undo the damage done by the thieves. Perhaps the community of Mission, already well know for its generosity, can rise to the challenge once more and support the society.

Things that are going well in B.C. Tom Fletcher
B.C. Views In the early days of this new year, readers have advised me to do several things. I’ll go with one that seems relatively painless, embracing the “sunny ways” of our new federal government and seeking optimism in these fragile times. For starters, we have a building boom going on in the southwest. Here in Victoria, cranes dot the skyline as new residential-commercial projects emerge from bedrock, and hardhats are mostly on construction workers, scratched and backwards, rather than shiny and forward on politicians. Shipyards are busy, with Royal Canadian Navy work and cruise ship refits to reduce their emissions, plus work on ferries, tugboats and barges. Most of the activity is private investment, much of it in a hot housing market. Surrey has just recorded its second-high-
est total for building permits in history, a value of $1.46 billion nearly matching the pre-recession peak of 2007. Thousands of provincial employees get a small raise in February, based on stronger than forecast economic growth in 2014. It works out to $300 a year for a medical technologist and $346 for a teacher. Health care costs are rising less dramatically. That should ease the crisis atmosphere at provincial and federal health ministers’ negotiations over the funding formula, taking place this week in Vancouver. Health Minister Terry Lake announced last week that the province is increasing funding for a promising program in cancer research, using genetic analysis to improve targeting for drugs to treat the hundreds of different cancers diagnosed in B.C. patients each year. The B.C. Cancer Agency’s new director, Dr. Malcolm Moore, oncologist Dr. Janessa Laskin and Dr. Marco Marra, director of the agency’s Genome Science Centre, described a world-leading centre of research that is reaching out to specialists and their patients across the province and attracting international funding and talent for ground-breaking research.
Outside the urban regions, where retail sales and real estate mainly drive the economy, sunny ways are harder to find. The mining and natural gas sectors are in the grip of a slump in commodity prices, with more temporary mine closures expected. The forest industry is being helped by
Most of the activity is private investment, much of it in a hot housing market. the low Canadian dollar and a steady recovery in the U.S. economy, and tourism is expected to have another strong year as Americans take advantage of a discount on visits to B.C. Central 1 Credit Union broke down the regional employment numbers for B.C. in 2015, and found job growth in every region except the Cariboo. Province-wide employment grew 1.2 per cent last year, ahead of the national rate. That may not sound like much, but compared to Alberta’s oil-dependent economy, it’s pretty good.
Construction of a new dam on the Peace River is expected to ramp up this year, bringing workers home from Alberta, and the federal government is planning to fasttrack its promised infrastructure spending to create work across the country. Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett was in Toronto last week to ring the opening bell at the stock exchange with B.C. mining industry representatives. Not much sun on mining stocks these days, but Bennett’s sales pitch to an investor luncheon included reference to two more mines under construction in northwest B.C., the province’s Pacific Rim trade advantage, and revenue sharing with First Nations that is attracting attention of other provinces. The Conference Board of Canada has forecast that B.C.’s economy will “lead the country by a wide margin over the near term,” with unemployment declining in 2016. We’re at the mercy of global forces, but things could be a whole lot worse.

YOUR VIEWS Power of good Proud to campaign for old growth Blog.blackpress4good.com According to Tom Fletcher, “an employee of the B.C. branch plant of Sierra Club lurks, apparently coordinating media and protesters” regarding logging in the Walbran Valley (Avatar Sequel Bombs in Walbran, Jan 12). He’s referring to me. Far from lurking, I’m proud to be campaigning with Sierra Club BC to save the some of the last significant stands of unprotected old-growth on Vancouver Island. (And, to correct but one of the many misleading or false claims in Fletcher’s piece, Sierra Club BC is entirely independent.) Fletcher’s diatribe reveals him as Teal Jones’ willing stenogra-
pher, uncritically regurgitating the logging company’s talking points. Fletcher and Teal Jones may believe it is morally and ecologically acceptable to cut down these magnificent trees and destroy complex, delicate ecosystems. Sierra Club BC doesn’t, and nor do the majority of British Columbians, who support concerted action to defend endangered old-growth trees, wildlife, a stable climate, clean water and clean air. British Columbians know that these things form the life-support system of our planet and support long-term prosperity and a diverse economy, includ-
ing sustainable second-growth forestry for current and future generations. A growing list of independent reports from B.C.’s Auditor General, the Forest Practices Board and even a Liberal MLA highlight the need for urgent action to save our forests. It’s long past time for the provincial government to reverse the damage done when it gutted the rules governing logging. Fourteen years of trusting corporate interests to manage our forests with little or no oversight has got to stop. Mark Worthing Sierra Club BC

and coffee to a family visiting with their loved ones who have a terminal illness helps bring a semblance of normalcy, and a degree of comfort, into their lives, which are otherwise highly abnormal and extremely stressful because of the terminal illness. As a hospice volunteer we get many compliments from the
visitors and residents about these baked goods. I thought the rest of Mission should be made aware of what a wonderful community-minded business COBS Bakery is. They are more than just good bakers; they are good people who selflessly do good for others. Karen Gardner CMH Volunteer

Cell tower dangers are lurking The recent editorial concerning keeping “the public in the loop” as regards to decisions and information is an interesting one in the light of a number of letters complaining of in-camera council meetings. As the present council recently approved the construction of a cell tower by Rodman Ave. at an in-camera meeting that itself was brought forward from an open evening meeting to the afternoon, myself and others can be forgiven for harbouring suspicions as to the motive for such a move. Rightly or wrongly, it would appear that a decision had already been made by someone on council that the public needed to be kept out. The approval for the tower had previously been put on hold by the last council. As the tower will only be a short distance from our house and others, we sent a petition to Industry Canada and I myself compiled a package of information from scientists, a British doctor whose research into the deaths of a large number of people from cancer led to the removal of a tower, and a report done by a provincial government in Austria which also showed a correlation between cell tower radiation and breast and brain cancer which was sent to every councillor member and Mayor. Except for a chance encounter with one councillor, only Industry Canada bothered to reply. I can only assume they were genuinely not interested or else they were advised to keep quiet. As well as any danger that the radiation may cause the value of our properties is also under threat. I realize that some people do not wish to pay for both a land line and cell phone access as we
do, but neither do we wish to lose many thousands of dollars on the value of our property. We do use a cell phone, but if for whatever reason there is no coverage, such as objections by local residents to the erection of a tower, it is not a problem. We would prefer not to harm others just for our convenience. Ron Metcalf Mission

Mission Coun. Rhett Nicholson holds up a copy of the design for the new skate park. Funds are being raised to make enhancements to the initial plan. KEVIN MILLS PHOTO original budget for the park. The Mission Optimist Club has already created a GoFundMe page for the park and a grant has been submitted to the Ministry of Justice Victim Services and Crime Prevention Division for funds. Another grant will
be applied for in the spring, in conjunction with Mission Youth Unlimited. Coun. Rhett Nicholson said youth in Mission are already donating allowances and trying to organize fundraisers. “What the kids are basically fundraising for is extra seat-
ing along the top west side. The more we have the better,” he said, adding that by donating money to the park they are making it their own. “Any extra money they get will be their little element that they put in there. They are going to have some ownership as well.”

The new skate park, set to be built in Mission later in 2016, could get a few extra enhancements, thanks to the generosity of the public. The $440,000 budget for the new park – which will be constructed on the grounds of the Mission Leisure Centre, adjacent to the old skate park location – is adequate to complete the project. However, due to the desire of some community members to make the park even bigger, the district has created a Friends of the Skate Park program that allows for community fundraising. All money raised will go toward the completion of an additional section which would include an open skating area and tiered seating and ledges. This addition would not involve any of the

If you’re searching for some new dining ideas, look no further than Mission’s downtown core. Kerry and Laurel Martin, owners of Martin’s Downtown, have come up with a new idea to promote local dining opportunities. Dine Downtown Mission is a week-long event that allows diners to try new menu items at a special price. Last year, Martin’s Downtown did the campaign on its own. This year, with the help of the mission Downtown Business Association, there are six participating restaurants. “I’d love to see all the restaurateurs downtown trying to group market a little bit to try and promote the downtown core,” said Kerry. “For downtown to be vital, they need to be combining resources and market it as a dining area,” he added. This year’s Dine Downtown Mission runs from Jan. 22 to 29 and has six restaurants – Martin’s Downtown, Elenis Restaurant, U&I Thai, The Sweet Spot Cafe, English Tarts and Akasaka Japanese Restaurant – offering special deals to entice diners to try something new. Kerry said restaurants normally struggle to bring people in during January and February, after the rush of the holidays is over, and the Dine Downtown Mission promotion is a good way to rekindle interest in dining out. “Folks from Mission seem to think there’s no place to eat here,” said Kerry. “This is a great way to get people back in the habit of dining out after the holiday season.” Jamie Hayes, executive director of the Mission Downtown Business Association, said once the Martins approached the society with the idea, the association quickly decided it would throw its support behind it. “The great thing about this is we have such a diverse number of restaurants,” said Hayes. “The greatest thing about this is you are able to try food at restaurants at a special rate that you may not have considered before.”

The Mission Outlaws blanked the Ridge Meadows Flames 5-0 on Saturday night. KEVIN MILLS PHOTO
Outlaws win sixth straight Ben Lypka Abbotsford News
After kicking off 2016 with a loss, the Mission City Outlaws have again caught fire, and are riding a sixgame winning streak. Mission extended the run with wins on Thursday and Saturday. The Outlaws blasted the Langley Knights 9-3 in Langley on Thursday, and outshot the Knights 58-28. They opened up a 2-0 lead in the first, added three in the second and four more in the third. Forward Bryce Pisiak had a four-point night (two goals and two assists). Other Mission goal scorers included Tyler Wickman, Noah Wiebe, Sammy Zeinab, Ryan Sharma, Mitchell Biermann, Brody Dyck and Justin Bowerman. Outlaws goalie Jeffrey Veitch made 25 saves for his ninth win on the year. Mission then hosted the Ridge Meadows Flames on Saturday, and blanked them 5-0. Outlaws head coach Brad Veitch said his special teams made a big difference in the win. “I thought we played with a lot of energy and the penalty kill was outstanding,” he said. “We gave them a lot of opportunities, especially early, but we didn’t give them many chances on those power plays.” Mission was shorthanded seven times, and killed off each opportunity. “The guys in the last few games have bought into what we want them to be doing and have been playing with a lot of determination.”
The powerplay was also big for the Outlaws, as they scored a pair of goals with the man advantage. Veitch said the key has been keeping it simple. “Our powerplay has been pretty consistent all year,” he said. “We stress to get traffic to the net and simplify it. That’s what led to both the powerplay goals on Saturday. We took the puck hard to the net, got a point shot through and had Continued on A14

OBITUARIES
Iona Lorraine January 30, 1942 ~ January 10, 2016 Iona Peirce was born in Calgary, Alberta, January 30, 1942. During her years she became a registered nurse, a school teacher and an accountant. She owned many dogs and had a doggy day care business called “The Happy Gang”. The dogs Iona owned were trained and went into hospitals and nursing homes as “pets and friends”. After several years of ill health she passed away peacefully at Menno Hospital, Abbotsford, BC on January 10, 2016. She was predeceased by her sisters Ailain Durant and Joan Hartman and is survived by her sister Doreen Holm of Winnipeg and by Arlene Austin, a dear friend of hers for over fifty years, who lives in Abbotsford.
SPORRE John Bernard March 13, 1916 ~ December 1, 2015 It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of John Bernard Sporre, age 99, on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 in Mission, BC. John is survived by his wife Ellen of 61 years, children; Sharon (Gary), Diane, Kevin (Ingrid), Greg (Susan), grandchildren; Lindsey, Steven, Leyna, Jaime, Bryan, Nicola, Sheena, Tamara, Kevin and Sandy, 8 great-grandchildren, and sisters; Kay Terepocki and Ingrid Pelchat. He is predeceased by his siblings Ellen, Carl and Gus. John spent many years working as a logger in the forests of BC after arriving here from Sweden as a young man at the age of 12. After retirement John loved being outdoors whether it was a nature walk or just a walk around the neighbourhood and he also loved to dig in the garden with his beloved cat Bella by his side. He will be dearly missed by his loving family and all who knew him. The family would like to thank the staff of the Mission Hospital and of TRIM for the excellent care provided for John. A celebration of his life is being planned for this summer.
STINSON Ross After 91 years and 9 days, the time had come for Ross to leave the prison of Alzheimers. During his life he saw more changes than any other generation. At the age of 10, he helped his brother deliver bread on a horse-drawn wagon for McGavin’s, which was just the beginning. From wagons to driverless cars, crystal sets to cell phones, postmen to instant messaging to name a few. He adapted to many of them. Ross was born to William and Katie Stinson in Calgary. He met his wife, Lorraine, the love of his life, for 70 years, at Prairie Bible Institute, which tried in vain, to make sure boys didn’t meet girls! He interrupted his high school to join the Canadian Navy during WW II serving on the HMCS Glace Bay. He loved to share his knowledge of bicycle repair with many young people as well as providing bicycles to over 200 missionary kids. 1900 high school students, missionary families, immigrants and seniors, received their driver’s licenses through Ross’ instruction and encouragement. He taught Sunday school for 26 years to Grades 4 - 7, and supported hundreds of missionaries and pastors. His two daughters, Deanna and Donna and his three grandsons and six great grandchildren will always be thankful for his legacy. Although compromised in communication he never forgot his love of Christ and the assurance of His love and care. Memorial Celebration: January 30, 2016 at 1:00 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Rd., Abbotsford, BC.

OBITUARIES
HARRIS Robert Murray ~ Life Well Lived ~ Passed away on January 15th, 2016 at the Mission Hospice in his 92nd year. Murray was born August 22, 1923 in Kamloops, BC, the fourth of six brothers. He spent most of his childhood in Star City, Saskatchewan. Murray joined the RCAF shortly before his 18th birthday. In April 1943 he boarded the Queen Elizabeth and set off for England posted to Yorkshire, Skipton-onSwale, and Dalton where he served as an air force service mechanic, being discharged in Vancouver, September 1945. In 1946 Murray enrolled at the University of British Columbia where he received his BA in Mathematics and Chemistry and first year teaching certification. His first teaching job was at a 2 teacher school in Spences Bridge, BC. Two years later his next teaching position took him to Mission where he taught Math and Chemistry until his retirement in 1985. He coached the men’s volleyball team and took one team to the Provincial Championships. In his later years he also served as the Vice Principle of Mission Senior Secondary High School. During his time at Mission Senior, he took night and summer classes receiving his Bachelor of Education degree from UBC and his Masters of Education from Western Washington State University in 1967. After his retirement he devoted his time to woodworking - making many bowls, Christmas decorations, pens, cheese trays and tables. He loved to curl and was still in the curling league and winning bonspiels at 86 years of age. Murray volunteered with the Canadian Cancer Society and drove patients into Vancouver and Bellingham for treatments. He was a member of the Mission Royal Canadian Legion. He was also known for playing the pots and pans until he got himself a drum set. Both he and Nona travelled extensively, especially to Ireland. They enjoyed many trips together. One of his greatest joys was running into past students who remembered him by the nick name “Big Mur” or “Prunee”. Murray is lovingly remembered by his wife of over 66 years, Nona; his daughters Kelly-Anne (Larry) and Jill (Bruce); grandchildren Brianna (Ryan), Ryan and Ashley (James), Kevin and Colin; and great grandchildren Mason, Madisyn and Jacob. He is also survived by his brother Gavin (Pam). He will also be remembered by his sisters-in-law, Kitty, Lenore and Davene; as well as many nieces and nephews, family and friends. At his request no funeral service will be held. A Celebration of Life will be held mid-March and will be announced at a later date. Memorial tributes may be made to the Mission Hospice, 32180 Hillcrest Avenue, Mission, BC V2V 1L2 or to the Veterans Fund, c/o Mission Royal Canadian Legion Branch 57, 32627 Logan Avenue, Mission, BC V2V 6K4. The end of an era for the Harris family, but we are so thankful he is no longer suffering. Our thanks go out to Dr. Patel, the team at the Mission Memorial Hospital who saw him many times over the last year and to the Mission Hospice team and volunteers who made his and the family’s lives easier over the past week.
