I was getting up at 5 o’clock in the morning and sometimes I was kept up most of the night.” For more than 60 years, the Lynnhaven Society had previously operated a housing project on Lynn Avenue, where residents lived in 40 ranch-style units. In 2011, the society was given approval to sell that facility, which was increasingly costly to maintain, and construct two new buildings on Braun Avenue, closer to the city’s downtown core. Today, eight of the 64 Lynnhaven units are reserved for people over the age of 55 with disabilities, who pay $375 monthly, while the rest are seContinued on A4

Abbotsford Police are warning people to be more cautious about locking their cars and to not leave valuables inside after a hike in thefts from vehicles. Const. Paul Walker said there have been 110 such crimes from Jan. 1 to 20 this year, compared to 99 for the same period in 2015 and 77 in 2014. He said it’s not evident why the numbers are rising each year. Walker said the thefts are occurring across Abbotsford and mainly involve thieves getting into unlocked vehicles and stealing items such as electronics, wallets, loose change and insurance papers.
Identity theft has resulted from some of the circumstances. For example, the thieves have used the personal information they have stolen to obtain fraudulent credit cards in the victims’ names. Vehicles that have been targeted have been located both in driveways and parked on the street, Walker said. He said there are few incidents of the thieves breaking windows or locks to get into the vehicles; most are crimes of opportunity based on the culprit coming across an unlocked car. Meanwhile, the number of cars being stolen has also gone up. There were 42 such incidents reported from Jan. 1 to 20 of this year, compared to 32 in 2015 and 21 in 2014.

Winter Snow & Ice Program The goal of the City’s Snow and Ice Control Program is to maintain travel routes where there is snow and ice on roads and restore mobility for the traveling public. Our priority roads for snow and ice removal are: • first priority (high volume and strategic arterial and collector roads, and major access roads to hillside areas);
• third priority (remaining roadways not identified as first and second priority). First priority roads are maintained until conditions are under control subject to worker/equipment availability and weather. Once these roads are addressed resources are redirected to second priority routes and subsequently third priority routes.

The loss of Grade 6 and 7 students from Bradner elementary school could spell the end for a 97-year-old tradition and lead to an exodus from the public system, parents say. The Abbotsford school district has proposed moving students in those grades from six rural schools to middle schools in the city core. The move would bring the rural schools – Bradner, Mt. Lehman, Aberdeen, Ross, Barrowtown and Upper Sumas – into conformity with the city’s other K-5 elementaries. But the proposal, which will be voted on by the school board in February, has drawn opposition from many parents. The district, which is holding information sessions on the proposal this week and next, says the inconsistency among elementary schools poses logistical challenges. They note that it also means the rural students also currently end up attending different schools in three consecutive years and don’t benefit from a “full middle school educational experience.” But Amanda McAllister, a parent of three Bradner students, said parents are unanimously against the proposal and have been discussing sending students to private schools or in the neighbouring Langley school district, instead of the under-utilized Reimer middle school, as proposed by the district. McAllister says parents are
A school district plan to move Grade 6 and 7 students from rural schools in west Abbotsford to middle schools could jeopardize a traditional community event, say some parents. devoted to Bradner’s grade structure and its community feel, and there are also worries that the annual May Day celebrations – which are organized by the Bradner Parents Advisory Council – will be affected by changes. Not only are Bradner parents instrumental in the events organization, but highlights of the 97-year-old event include a maypole dance by older Bradner students and the crowning of a May Day king and queen from among the Grade 7 class. “It’s a great tradition,” McAllister said. “It’s important to the school and important to the community, and it’s something special that we don’t want to lose.” McAllister said she attended
a recent information session at Reimer and was impressed with the administrators and staff there. But she said if the Bradner kids end up dispersed around the region, then she may follow suit and would consider sending her children to a private school. “Bradner is a special area because we’re a sort of community,” McAllister said, adding that the school has done an excellent job at incorporating outdoor learning into the curriculum. “I think there’s something really special at Bradner that we don’t get anywhere else.” McAllister said she understands why the district has proposed the reconfiguration, but doubts that it will succeed,
given the resistance by parents. In an email to The News, Bradner parents Darren and Laurie Brader said they’re concerned about sending students to Reimer because of the Townline Hill gang conflict, which has seen numerous criminal incidents – ranging from property crime to homicide – in the area over the last year. Similarly, Conny Corcoran wrote the school district to say she will look west to Langley if the Abbotsford school district follows through on its plan. “I have specifically chosen Bradner Elementary to be the best choice for my children because of the fact that it does go to Grade 7,” she wrote. “I do not believe sending my children into such a large sea of change at the age of 11/12 is at all appropriate for their mental stability … These are the years of so much change within themselves that they need the most stable environment that we can possibly provide.” In an email Thursday to The News, the district stated: “We look forward to the presentation of information and resulting discussions with parents at our three consultation meetings. So far, there’s been a good exchange of ideas and information, in a respectful and open atmosphere. “In February we will schedule follow-up meetings at each of the six rural schools, to review additional information and respond to some of the suggestions made.”
Matsqui drops pipeline objections Deal reached with Kinder Morgan Canada One of the local stakeholders involved in Kinder Morgan Canada’s plans to expand its Trans Mountain Pipeline has dropped its concerns involving the project. In a letter posted recently online but written in October, Chief Alice McKay wrote that the Matsqui First Nation was consenting to the pipeline application,

“subject to the terms and conditions of a mutual benefits agreement signed with Trans Mountain.” Details of the agreement were not disclosed, and McKay didn’t return a News request for comment. The band had previously submitted an impact assessment that found a spill
from the pipeline – which crosses a corner of the band’s land, but runs through 38 kilometres of its traditional territory – would have a dramatic economic, cultural and psychological effect on members. But the report also suggested that locating the pipeline off of the reserve wouldn’t change those impacts.

Gladys camp to close
Are you generally positive about the B.C. economy in 2016?
Just because it’s not a park and no one uses the land daily, doesn’t mean they can ignore the ruling, either. Clean it up every morning and move along – come back in the evening. You want the city to follow the rules, you have to as well. George Roux

LAST WEEK, WE ASKED:
They are there to protest; they refuse to go to the shelter the city built for them. It’s time to make them obey the law. If they don’t, there is a nice warm place for them to go where they can get three meals, showers, and a bed. Lorena Fraser
Do you spend more than a third of your income on housing?
I would like to see these legal advocates do something physically positive to actually help these homeless instead of enabling them to stay in these “camps.” Margaret Stewart

B.C. Views In the early days of this new year, readers have advised me to do several things. I’ll go with one that seems relatively painless, embracing the “sunny ways” of our new federal government and seeking optimism in these fragile times. For starters, we have a building boom going on in the southwest. Here in Victoria, cranes dot the skyline as new residential-commercial projects emerge from bedrock, and hardhats are mostly on construction workers, scratched and backwards, rather than shiny and forward on politicians. Shipyards are busy, with Royal Canadian Navy work and cruise ship refits to reduce their emissions, plus work on ferries, tugboats and barges. Most of the activity is private investment, much of it in a hot housing market. Surrey has just recorded its second-high-
est total for building permits in history, a value of $1.46 billion nearly matching the pre-recession peak of 2007. Thousands of provincial employees get a small raise in February, based on stronger than forecast economic growth in 2014. It works out to $300 a year for a medical technologist and $346 for a teacher. Health care costs are rising less dramatically. That should ease the crisis atmosphere at provincial and federal health ministers’ negotiations over the funding formula, taking place this week in Vancouver. Health Minister Terry Lake announced last week that the province is increasing funding for a promising program in cancer research, using genetic analysis to improve targeting for drugs to treat the hundreds of different cancers diagnosed in B.C. patients each year. The B.C. Cancer Agency’s new director, Dr. Malcolm Moore, oncologist Dr. Janessa Laskin and Dr. Marco Marra, director of the agency’s Genome Science Centre, de-
scribed a world-leading centre of research that is reaching out to specialists and their patients across the province and attracting international funding and talent for ground-breaking research. Outside the urban regions, where retail sales and real estate mainly drive the economy, sunny ways are harder to find. The mining and natural gas sectors are in the grip of a slump in commodity prices, with more temporary mine closures expected. The forest industry is being helped by the low Canadian dollar and a steady recovery in the U.S. economy, and tourism is expected to have another strong year as Americans take advantage of a discount on visits to B.C. Central 1 Credit Union broke down the regional employment numbers for B.C. in 2015, and found job growth in every region except the Cariboo. Province-wide employment grew 1.2 per cent last year, ahead of the national rate. That may not sound like much, but compared to Alberta’s oil-de-
B.C.’s economy will ‘lead the country by a wide margin over the near term.’
pendent economy, it’s pretty good. Construction of a new dam on the Peace River is expected to ramp up this year, bringing workers home from Alberta, and the federal government is planning to fasttrack its promised infrastructure spending to create work across the country. Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett was in Toronto last week to ring the opening bell at the stock exchange with B.C. mining industry representatives. Not much sun on mining stocks these days, but Bennett’s sales pitch to an investor luncheon included reference to two more mines under construction in northwest B.C., the province’s Pacific Rim trade advantage, and revenue sharing with First Nations that is attracting attention of other provinces. The Conference Board of Canada has forecast that B.C.’s economy will “lead the country by a wide margin over the near term,” with unemployment declining in 2016. We’re at the mercy of global forces, but things could be a whole lot worse. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. tfletcher@blackpress. ca Twitter: @tomfletcherbc

& HAUT By the IGH OMA ST LL RE ET
BUFFET Epidemic of reckless driving BRUNCH Last month my wife and I witnessed Dumb Dumber Jackass and Canada’s Worst Driver all rolled into one. The driver in question defied reason, common sense and regard for public safety. Perhaps in light of what we saw, that driver should consider a different occupation. On another day it would be a horrific crash scene. For oncoming traffic it would have been a trip to the morgue. Everyone think about this and hold your breath like the middle-aged woman must have watching a road grader and a dump truck race toward her side by side. The driver of the dump truck with a pup trailer attached, having picked up enough speed coming down the Huntingdon Road hill, must have decided to be foolhardy pulling into the left-hand lane – disregarding the double yellow no-passing lines – to barrel past the yellow commercial road grader. The truck driver in question blows past Peardonville and Ross roads, still in the left lane, rushing up the slight rise to just make it past oncoming traffic by the length of the truck and trailer. I wonder if the driver of the dump truck threw away the instruction manual called Rules of the Road and Why They
are There. There appears to be an epidemic of reck-
less endangerment on today’s roads. The cure is to drive
responsibly. Myron Neville Abbotsford

Sunday Family Arts returns to The Reach
ABBY CENTRAL
Medical & Dental Clinic New Dental Patients Welcome!
Program free to kids and their caregivers The bi-weekly Sunday Family Arts program returns to The Reach for its fifth year. The free program is a partnership between The Reach Gallery Museum and Prospera Credit Union, and offers a time for children and their families to experience the exhibitions, then gather around artistic stations to create an arts and/or heritage keepsake – without having to worry about the cost. Anna Williams, The Reach’s education programmer, said Sunday Family Arts has been successful because of the value families find in participating in hands-on activities that are also paired with a learning opportunity. “Our Visual Thinking Strategies-based exhi-
Outstanding farmers named The BC and Yukon Outstanding Young Farmer Program (BCOYF) has announced the winner of the 2016 program. Chilliwack poultry and egg producers Brian and Jewel Pauls were named this year’s Outstanding Young Farmers. Brian’s parents, Frank and Elma Paul, earned the same award in 1990. The Pauls raise broilers, pullets, layers and turkeys, and grow a multitude of crops. To be eligible for the award, farmers must be between the ages of 19 and 39 and derive at least two-thirds of their income from farming. Nominees are judged on conservation practices, production history, management practices, and community contributions. The BCOYF program is sponsored by the BC Broiler Hatching Egg Commission and Clearbrook Grain and Milling, both based in Abbotsford, as well as Farm Credit Canada and Insure Wealth.

that relate to current exhibitions,” she said. “Having the opportunity to view art in a gallery, then get their fingers messy
trying out those same techniques in the art studio is a highly inspiring experience for kids and their families.” Shawn Good, president and CEO of Prospera, which funds the program, said children learn from doing. “As a community, if we truly wish to make a difference in the lives of children and foster the strong, confident leaders of tomorrow, the most important thing we can do is to stimulate their curiosity and provide them with opportunities to explore and develop critical-thinking skills.” Sunday Family Arts takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. at The Reach (32388 Veterans Way) on Jan. 31, Feb. 14 and 28, and March 13. The series kicks off with Five Broken Cameras at 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 25 in room B121. Budrus will be screened on Feb. 24 at 5:30 p.m. in room A252, while The Gatekeepers will be shown on March 7 at 3 p.m. in room B121. Helping organize the event are UFV alumnus Philip Sherwood and UFV student Colter Louwerse, both of whom have recently visited Palestine. “These documentaries provide valuable insights into the causes and human cost of what is the longest military occupation in modern history,” said Louwerse, a third-year political science major at UFV. Forum on terrorism at UFV Program takes place on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at Abbotsford campus The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) presents its second open forum on terrorism and its effects on Tuesday, Jan. 26. The session, called Towards Peace and Security: Putting Terrorism in (its) Place, starts at 6 p.m. at the Abbotsford campus, 33844 King Rd. Confirmed speak-
ers include UFV faculty members Garry Fehr (geography), Ghizlane Laghzaoui (modern languages), Ron Dart and Edward Akuffo (political science), Amy Prevost and Irwin Cohen (criminology), Steven Schroeder (peace and conflict studies), and Sven van de Wetering (psychology). They will be joined
by student and alumni speakers from the Arab Club and Muslim Association, as well as James Ward (Sakej), a member of the Mi’kmaq Nation, and Ray Corrado and Garth Davies from Simon Fraser University’s school of criminology. “We are presenting this forum as part of our commitment to maintain ongoing di-
alogue and debate on a phenomenon that has international, national and local implications that are polit-
ical, cultural and psychological all at once,” said Ken Brealey, UFV associate dean of arts. “This forum is in-

Cascades men sweep UNBC After a pair of big wins over the weekend, the UFV Cascades men’s basketball team has some playoff breathing space. The Cascades posted wins on Friday and Saturday against the UNBC Timberwolves, widening the gap on third place in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport’s (CIS) Explorer division. The men’s team staged some lategame heroics against UNBC on Friday, as the Cascades were trailing
by 14 points with under two minutes to go in the third, but then outscored Timberwolves 27-10 in the fourth to win 63-56. “Really, we just didn’t turn it over or allow offensive rebounds (in the fourth quarter), Cascades head coach Adam Friesen. Guard Vijay Dhillon led the way with 18 points, while Kevon Parchment added 16 points and 12 rebounds. The Cascades held UNBC to just 27 per cent shooting, including only 20 per cent in the
second half. “Our intensity picked up, Friesen said. “It’s a combination of playing better defence, but we also got fortunate at the same time. They had some good looks that just didn’t drop. The defensive pressure continued on Saturday, when the Cascades again held UNBC to just 31 per cent shooting, and picked up the 62-47 win. Parchment put on another great all-around performance, collecting 16 points, 11 rebounds,
five assists and five steals. Forward Nate Brown added 16 points, three rebounds and two blocks. The team’s record now stands at eight wins and four losses after the pair of victories. For the women’s team, history was made on both Friday and Saturday against UNBC. Friday saw the Timberwolves beat the Cascades for the first time ever, and Saturday was head coach Al Tuchscherer’s 500th
game coached. UNBC was on fire in the first half on Friday, outscoring the Cascades 40-20 to cruise to the 63-47 win. UFV struggled from the field, shooting 22 per cent and only eight per cent from beyond the arc. Kayli Sartori had a team-high 14 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. Saturday marked Tuchscherer’s 500th game coached, and his team helped mark that

UFV women upset Mariners The UFV Cascades women’s volleyball team knocked off one of the top teams in the country on Saturday. Coming off a four-set loss (25-15, 9-25, 20-25, 1225) to the VIU Mariners on Friday, UFV returned to the courts in Nanaimo and pulled off a five-set (2426, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21, 15-9) win over the number two-ranked Mariners. Cascades head coach Mike Gilray said his team battled injuries to pull through with the big win. “The depth of our team showed – we had four first-year players on the floor in the fifth game,” he said. “For those girls to come in and be able to compete was awesome.” The game-clinching fifth set saw the Cascades
jump out to a 5-0 lead off the heels of stellar serving from Nicole Blandford. The win improves the Cascades to a record of seven wins and nine losses, and they are in fifth place in the Pacwest. It was a different story for the men’s team, who dropped both games to the Mariners. The Cascades were swept on both days, losing 25-15, 25-21, 25-8 on Friday, and 25-19, 28-26, 25-20 on Saturday. The pair of losses drops the Cascades to a record of eight wins and eight losses on the season, and they sit fourth in the Pacwest. Both teams now head into a bye week, and they return to action Jan. 30 and 31 with home games against the College of the Rockies Avalanche.

Ahem, call us old fashioned but we’ll stick with the ‘options’ option from here on in!) Honda unveiled the all-new 2017 Ridgeline truck promising “superior on-road performance – with the segment’s best handling, ride quality, cabin quietness and all-weather traction capabilities”. Frankly, it’s in tough in a tough market full of tough successful domestic and import competitors. A round of applause for KIA, the Korean company that continues to challenge its big brother Hyundai and indeed the rest of the market with interesting concepts and production cars. The Telluride concept is its take on a premium large sport utility vehicle, featuring three-rows of seating for seven passengers. Notable are the front doors and rearhinged back doors that swing open 90 degrees in opposing directions. Talking of Hyundai, it unveiled its G90 premium luxury sedan for the new Genesis brand. Don’t snigger, these guys know what they are doing . . . now. Five additional Genesis models are planned for launch within the next five years. March 13, 1916 ~ December 1, 2015

January 30, 1942 ~ January 10, 2016
It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of John Bernard Sporre, age 99, on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 in Mission, BC. John is survived by his wife Ellen of 61 years, children; Sharon (Gary), Diane, Kevin (Ingrid), Greg (Susan), grandchildren; Lindsey, Steven, Leyna, Jaime, Bryan, Nicola, Sheena, Tamara, Kevin and Sandy, 8 great-grandchildren, and sisters; Kay Terepocki and Ingrid Pelchat. He is predeceased by his siblings Ellen, Carl and Gus. John spent many years working as a logger in the forests of BC after arriving here from Sweden as a young man at the age of 12. After retirement John loved being outdoors whether it was a nature walk or just a walk around the neighbourhood and he also loved to dig in the garden with his beloved cat Bella by his side. He will be dearly missed by his loving family and all who knew him. The family would like to thank the staff of the Mission Hospital and of TRIM for the excellent care provided for John. A celebration of his life is being planned for this summer.
It is with a heavy heart I announce the passing of Michael John Schafer on January 12, 2016. He is sadly missed by his loving wife Linda; sisters Cathy (Les) Allen and Liz (Andy) Blackmore and his brother Dave (Jane) Schafer as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Mike is predeceased by his parents John and Betty Schafer and his youngest brother Bobby. He lived his life with zest. His family, golf and flying were his passions, though not necessarily in that order! A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers please honor Mike’s memory with a donation to the charity of your choice.
Iona Peirce was born in Calgary, Alberta, January 30, 1942. During her years she became a registered nurse, a school teacher and an accountant. WIEBE Esther E. April 22, 1924 ~ January 17, 2016
STINSON Ross After 91 years and 9 days, the time had come for Ross to leave the prison of Alzheimers. During his life he saw more changes than any other generation. At the age of 10, he helped his brother deliver bread on a horse-drawn wagon for McGavin’s, which was just the beginning. From wagons to driverless cars, crystal sets to cell phones, postmen to instant messaging to name a few. He adapted to many of them. Ross was born to William and Katie Stinson in Calgary. He met his wife, Lorraine, the love of his life, for 70 years, at Prairie Bible Institute, which tried in vain, to make sure boys didn’t meet girls! He interrupted his high school to join the Canadian Navy during WW II serving on the HMCS Glace Bay. He loved to share his knowledge of bicycle repair with many young people as well as providing bicycles to over 200 missionary kids. 1900 high school students, missionary families, immigrants and seniors, received their driver’s licenses through Ross’ instruction and encouragement. He taught Sunday school for 26 years to Grades 4 - 7, and supported hundreds of missionaries and pastors. His two daughters, Deanna and Donna and his three grandsons and six great grandchildren will always be thankful for his legacy. Although compromised in communication he never forgot his love of Christ and the assurance of His love and care. Memorial Celebration: January 30, 2016 at 1:00 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Rd., Abbotsford, BC.

OBITUARIES
HARRIS Robert Murray ~ Life Well Lived ~ Passed away on January 15th, 2016 at the Mission Hospice in his 92nd year. Murray was born August 22, 1923 in Kamloops, BC, the fourth of six brothers. He spent most of his childhood in Star City, Saskatchewan. Murray joined the RCAF shortly before his 18th birthday. In April 1943 he boarded the Queen Elizabeth and set off for England posted to Yorkshire, Skipton-onSwale, and Dalton where he served as an air force service mechanic, being discharged in Vancouver, September 1945. In 1946 Murray enrolled at the University of British Columbia where he received his BA in Mathematics and Chemistry and first year teaching certification. His first teaching job was at a 2 teacher school in Spences Bridge, BC. Two years later his next teaching position took him to Mission where he taught Math and Chemistry until his retirement in 1985. He coached the men’s volleyball team and took one team to the Provincial Championships. In his later years he also served as the Vice Principle of Mission Senior Secondary High School. During his time at Mission Senior, he took night and summer classes receiving his Bachelor of Education degree from UBC and his Masters of Education from Western Washington State University in 1967. After his retirement he devoted his time to woodworking - making many bowls, Christmas decorations, pens, cheese trays and tables. He loved to curl and was still in the curling league and winning bonspiels at 86 years of age. Murray volunteered with the Canadian Cancer Society and drove patients into Vancouver and Bellingham for treatments. He was a member of the Mission Royal Canadian Legion. He was also known for playing the pots and pans until he got himself a drum set. Both he and Nona travelled extensively, especially to Ireland. They enjoyed many trips together. One of his greatest joys was running into past students who remembered him by the nick name “Big Mur” or “Prunee”. Murray is lovingly remembered by his wife of over 66 years, Nona; his daughters Kelly-Anne (Larry) and Jill (Bruce); grandchildren Brianna (Ryan), Ryan and Ashley (James), Kevin and Colin; and great grandchildren Mason, Madisyn and Jacob. He is also survived by his brother Gavin (Pam). He will also be remembered by his sisters-in-law, Kitty, Lenore and Davene; as well as many nieces and nephews, family and friends. At his request no funeral service will be held. A Celebration of Life will be held mid-March and will be announced at a later date. Memorial tributes may be made to the Mission Hospice, 32180 Hillcrest Avenue, Mission, BC V2V 1L2 or to the Veterans Fund, c/o Mission Royal Canadian Legion Branch 57, 32627 Logan Avenue, Mission, BC V2V 6K4. The end of an era for the Harris family, but we are so thankful he is no longer suffering. Our thanks go out to Dr. Patel, the team at the Mission Memorial Hospital who saw him many times over the last year and to the Mission Hospice team and volunteers who made his and the family’s lives easier over the past week.

National Family Literacy Day
15
minutes of fun
ABC Life Literacy Canada encourages families to have “15 Minutes of Fun” learning together every day. Engaging in literacy activities as a family improves a child’s skills and also helps adults keep their skills sharp. Here are a few ideas to get your family started!
7 new activities for 2016! • Lights out, talk on: After your bedtime story, turn the lights off and talk about new endings to the story you just read together.
• Find A-B-C: Have an alphabet scavenger hunt to look for things that begin with each letter of the alphabet. If you can’t find some letters, go outside or try looking in books and magazines.
Parenting Life Skills program for Immigrant families Parenting in Canada is quite different from parenting in our home countries. In the Parenting Life Skills program for Immigrant families, we try to equip newcomers with our Canadian cultural ways of parenting.
ing friends across cultures. Of course the child minding is a very important component of this program. Healthy snacks are served to parents and children. Healthy recipes are shared amongst the group participants as well.
We often do not learn parenting skills back home but follow the methods and approaches our grandparents/parents used in raising us and our siblings.
A Certificate of Completion is provided to parents who attend the course.
Topics include: • Communicating with your children
The beauty of this program is that it is diverse with people from varied cultural backgrounds coming together under one roof. It is incredible to see them mak-
• How to deal with bullying • The importance of play • Discipline
• Self Esteem • Anger Management • Healthy eating, cooking and nutrition • School Readiness/ Brain Development
• Let’s go Shopping: Have kids write the family grocery list out themselves, then bring it to the store. Let them check each item off the list. (Hmm, wonder how jelly beans got on the list…)
• A Course of Course: Build an obstacle course through your family room, and draw a map of how to go through it from beginning to end.
• Sing chat: Sing a conversation with your kids to the tune of your favourite song. Bonus points if you can make your song rhyme!
• Know it All: Together, look online for

• Have a Book-nic: Organize an indoor picnic with books and tasty treats. Choose a theme – try honey-flavoured cereal and read Winnie the Pooh.

National Family Literacy Day The Rotary Club of Abbotsford – Sumas
Little Free Library Program The Rotary Club of Abbotsford – Sumas has, to date, 13 Little Free Libraries in our community. They are situated in parks, social service offices, community service buildings, and in youth shelters. Since the inception of our program in March, 2014, we have distributed over 30,000 free books. One of the most important parts of this program is that we are partnering with other organizations, such as Literacy Matters, Abbotsford Community Services, the Sumas First Nation, and in one case, a group of University of the Fraser Valley students. Each group has a sustainability plan which will ensure that the public is able to access these books on a continuing basis. The City of Abbotsford sites and installs the libraries in parks which together we designate as prime locations for this initiative. The Rotary Club of Abbotsford – Sumas recognizes that literacy is a most important tool in assisting all ages and income groups to broaden their education, learn a new skill or just get lost in a good story.

play-based literacy activities during Family Literacy Week 2016 (January 24-31).
Literacy Outreach Coordinator, Abbotsford
Why is it important to “Read What You Love”? Children model what they see adults doing. By modeling enjoyment of reading parents are giving their children a gift of literacy. Studies have shown literacy development of families impacts every area of our lives: health, employment, economic status, and life opportunities. Parents and caregivers who participate in family learning directly and positively affect the language and literacy development of their children. Even 15 minutes of reading a day can improve both a child and parent’s literacy skills dramatically. Literacy Matters Abbotsford is joining Decoda Literacy Solutions, BC’s provincial literacy organization, to reach out to families across the province and to encourage all family members to take part in
“Families can build literacy skills through every day activities - playing games together, folding the laundry, making a shopping list, storytelling, doing crafts together or going for a walk outside and talking about what they see,” says Decoda’s CEO, Brenda Le Clair. Support literacy in your family and your community: join Literacy Matters Abbotsford in celebrating Family Literacy Week. We are hosting our fifth annual Community Literacy Challenge, “Read What You Love” from January 24 – February 13, 2016. All you need to do is read for 15 minutes each day and complete your reading log. The reading challenge is open to all ages! The kick off for this event will be a free pancake breakfast January 23 hosted by Abbotsford Fire Ser-
vices, Clearbrook Fire Hall at 32270 George Ferguson Way. The breakfast will run from 10am – noon. Be sure to visit the10th Annual Family Literacy Day at the Clearbrook Library and REACH after breakfast! Literacy Matters Abbotsford, Abbotsford’s community literacy network, recognizes the importance of family literacy. The goal of Literacy Matters Abbotsford is to connect literacy services to individuals; to connect services to each other; and to address the literacy gaps in Abbotsford. For more info on literacy programs visit literacymattersabbotsford.com or decoda.ca. If you have any questions about this event; if you are looking for a literacy program; if you would like to join or volunteer for Literacy Matters Abbotsford contact Sharon Crowley, Literacy Outreach Coordinator: literacymattersabbotsford@gmail.com.
Activities to encourage language e & reading in the early years: + Play rhyming games, such as, you say two words and your child tells you whether or not they rhyme + Play sound-matching games, such as, you say a word and your child thinks of a word that starts with the same sound or letter. etter. + Share books with your child often, sometimes reading to them, sometimes letting them tell the story. n + Ask your child to tell you a story about what they have seen + Don’t be afraid to be dramatic when reading – use silly voices, whispering and facial expressions.

Aboriginal parents as literacy supporters Sharon Crowley Literacy Outreach Coordinator, Abbotsford
Let’s Talk: Visual Literacy Laura Schneider Executive Director & Curator The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford
Did you know that most people take less than 20 seconds to consider a work of art in an art gallery, or an artefact in a museum? Understanding, evaluating and judging objects and images is something that we do every day, but we spend very little time considering this process. Visual literacy is connected to critical thinking, creativity, empathy and communication skills. With a few tools, and a bit more time, we can greatly enhance our visual literacy skills
through the act of meaningful looking. Galleries and museums are a valuable (and enjoyable!) resource to improve visual literacy at any age.
The process of meaningful looking involves three basic steps: 1. Looking carefully. 2. Describing and creating a list of elements that you see. 3. Relating these elements to other information-- either
Supports
around you in the gallery or museum, or from your own life-- in order to contemplate meaning. One of the most effective ways to engage in meaningful looking is to follow these three steps in conversation with your family or friends. Talking about works of art or objects with friends and family while you’re in front of them is an effective way to hone visual literacy skills. A group excursion to your local art gallery or museum can lead to great conversation, improved literacy and a deeper appreciation of historical objects and works of art.
In consultation with Elders and other Aboriginal community leaders, PALS (Parents as Literacy Supporters) has been adapted for Aboriginal communities. Aboriginal PALS is a play-based, culturally responsive family literacy program that gives parents and caregivers new strategies to support their preschool and kindergarten-aged children’s learning. The program provides parents and caregivers new strategies to support their preschool and kindergarten-aged children’s learning in fun and interactive ways. Each APALS session focuses on learning through play, and includes time for parents and caregivers to talk with a facilitator, and time for adults and children to learn, play and have fun together. The program responds to the cultural and linguistic needs of the participating families and aims to provide a positive transition from home, and other early care settings to school. Currently APALS sessions, in partnership with Abbotsford School District 34, Hand in Hand Childcare Society, and Literacy Matters Abbotsford, are being held at Alexander Elementary School, 2250 Lobban Road. The next session is January 27, 5 – 6:45 pm; dinner is included. If you would like more information or you would like to attend the next APALS session please call 604.859.1224 or email literacymattersabbotsford@gmail.com.

National Family Literacy Day The Joy of Literacy at the Abbotsford Libraries Hilary Russell Manager of the Abbotsford Libraries
What did the frog say to the librarian? “Read-it! Read-it! Read-it!” Okay, okay, I know it’s corny but people really do learn best when they’re having fun. At the Abbotsford Libraries, members of FVRL, we want to make the joy of reading and learning a top priority when we offer free library programs and services to the community. Storytimes are a staple of public library service and a great example of combining learning with fun. Staff choose stories, rhymes and poems so that kids don’t even notice that they’re learning basic literacy skills such as letter and number recognition, learning vocabulary and sentence structure, and understanding story and narrative. Kids put all these puzzle pieces together as they learn to read and communicate. Adults too, keep reading skills alive when they enjoy what they’re reading. When was the last time you were completely engrossed in a book or an article? Did it feel effortless as you rushed from page to page? It could have been a beautiful story or a mathematical tome but if it’s something you enjoy, it will keep your mind in focus and your reading skills sharp. Celebrate National Family Literacy Day by taking some time for joyful reading – we’ll be happy to help you find something fun!
Parents of young children in Abbotsford now have access to a range of early learning, health and family services in one convenient spot at Sweeney Neighbourhood Learning Centre to support families with children up to age 6. The Abbotsford School District is excited that this centre will link many existing services to ensure that our families have access to a wider range of opportunities for their children 0-6 years. Building on a foundation of existing programs offered by the Abbotsford Early Childhood Committee partners, Abbotsford School District continues to work to ensure early learning is a top priority. Many studies point toward better educational outcomes if children receive
individual attention and support during their early years. Supported by the Abbotsford Early Childhood Committee Partners Table and hosted by the Abbotsford School District, the centre will link many existing services to ensure that Abbotsford families have access to services that promote the health, well-being and development of Abbotsford children aged 0-6 years. The centre has Community outreach partners available to assist parents from 9:00 – 12:00 each day of the week. Parents are encouraged to drop by or contact the
