FortisBC is awaiting approval to build a new centralized operations centre in Castlegar, following the completion of the British Columbia Utilities Commission’s (BCUC) public proceedings.
“ ... the problem with Warfield is space constraints.” NICOLE BOGDANOVIC
The utility company addressed over 400 questions over two rounds of information requests, which wrapped up in December. The interveners and commission asked questions about a broad range of topics, including cost, project design and scope, rate impacts, and project justification for the proposed $20.7 million facility slated for Ootischenia, south of the West Kootenay Regional Airport. This process has now closed, and BCUC is scheduled to make a decision this spring. The proposed Kootenay Operations Centre would consolidate operations from
FortisBC’s Warfield complex, South Slocan generation site and potentially Castlegar district office, which was added as an amendment during the proceedings (bumping up the bill to $22.4 million, which would be offset by long-term savings). Nicole Bogdanovic, FortisBC’s corporate communications advisor, said the proposed change in location is a cost-saving measure that will not impact staffing numbers. “There are other factors that determine the resources we need to meet our business goals and to serve the area so really this is just to make sure that we’re able to meet that service at the lowest reasonable cost,” she told the Trail Times. “I think it’s important to know that the South Slocan building, in particular, is over 100 years old, it’s reached the end of its life, and it’s more costly to maintain that building than it is to put a facility in place that meets our current modern service standards. “And, the problem with Warfield is space constraints.” The number of people that work at the CONTINUED ON A3
Imagine a library that has a maple tree in the centre and a vendor next to it selling pancakes with maple syrup. There are kids jumping at the chance to catch frogs that leap from a pond nearby. Meanwhile, other visitors may find themselves stimulated by holograms or just a fresh cup of coffee served upstairs in the facility that is topped with a glass atrium. This is 13-year-old Caleb Bronn’s dream library. The avid reader is no stranger to the Trail and District Public Library. In fact, neither is his family, who was recently celebrated in a Top 25 Library Users (items out) list when middle child, 10-year-old Erin, took 21st place with 394 items borrowed in one year. The list included 10 individuals who checked out over 500 books, audio books, DVDs or CDs from Dec. 1, 2014 to Nov. 31, 2015. Most shocking was Edgar Bailey’s extraordinary record of over 1,000 items borrowed during this time. What kind of people use the library this much? According to Kathryn Foley, library director, the names varied from staff to Friends of the Library to the youngest, Erin, who felt “famous” when the results came in. “These are people who have a very solid presence in our library,” said Foley, who decided to give the top users a special invite to the recent opening of “Ordinary Lives, Extraordinary Times: Italian Canadian Internment Experience,” which is still on display outside the library in

Erin Bronn, 10, was included in the Trail and District Public Library’s recently shared Top 25 users list tallied from Dec. 1, 2014 to Nov. 31, 2015. Her and her family, avid readers originally from South Africa, were among the special guests invited to the opening of “Ordinary Lives, Extraordinary Times: Italian Canadian Internment Experience.” the Trail Memorial Centre. The Bronn family has become regular users of the Trail library. South African couple Charl and Karen Bronn have used the public space and all the resources that come with it to homeschool their three children: Caleb, Erin and Sarah, 8, since they made Trail their home four years ago. “At the moment I want to make sure they love learning,” said Charl. “If they love learning, they’ll learn forever.” Charl takes a blended
learning approach that centres around interesting reads, which are a starting point to much discussion that sways from historical times to how it applies to nowadays. He keeps to basics when it comes to subjects like math but sways from curriculum in other areas. He encourages his kids to find what they’re passionate about, and from there directs their attention to what the library has to offer. By now, though, the Bronn kids know their way around the Trail facility, which has
become much more than just a lending library. There is anticipation on the children’s faces as they wait to talk about their favourite books, subjects and general interests. Caleb likes “Lord of the Ring” or “Ranger’s Apprentice” because the series keeps the story going and him wanting more. He gets lost in fantasy and adventure, much like his sisters. Trail Walmart grand reopening on Thursday, festivities Saturday BY TIMES STAFF The newly remodeled Trail Walmart will reopen to the community as a supercentre on Thursday. The renovated store will feature a broad assortment of fresh, affordable groceries, general merchandise, and convenient services. Nicole Quinn is excited to lead the Trail Walmart Supercentre team as the store manager. Quinn has worked at Walmart for more than 20 years, where she first started as a cashier. “As a supercentre, our everyday low prices will remain the same but our customers now have access to quality, fresh food, and can enjoy an improved grocery shopping experience and even

THE C ANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - Walmart Canada will begin to charge customers for plastic bags as part of its strategy for cutting the amount of plastic that ends up in landfills. Beginning on Feb. 9, customers will be charged five cents each for plastic bags, with reusable bags available for a discounted rate of 25 cents each. The company - headquartered in Mississauga, west of Toronto - said that the introduction of a small fee in other countries has helped Walmart to reduce the number of plastic bags by more than half. Walmart says some of the proceeds from the new charge will go toward supporting recycling initiatives for grocery bags and other thin plastic objects.

With the conversion adding more than 20 new positions, the remodeled store now employs 150 full- and parttime associates. The re-opening of the Trail will happen in conjunction with 14 other supercentre expansion re-openings across Canada this month.

Warfield complex can vary, but there are 40 network service positions (Kootenay station service personnel) proposed for relocation, she confirmed. This list is shared by 11 positions based out of the Castlegar district office, which operates regional network services and related support positions such as power line technicians, substation electricians support staff and other field crews that work with transmission and distribution. South Slocan, which takes care of general administration, warehousing and plant operation, accounts for 42 proposed positions. The company plans on keeping these three facilities but how they will be used in future is yet to be determined. “It’s good to keep in mind that this is only 15 to 20 minutes away from where they are now, and many of these positions such as power line technicians already work in the field, so it doesn’t necessarily impact their commute,” added Bogdanovic. FortisBC should find out whether it can move forward with its plans in March and if given the go ahead will break ground as early as spring, with plans of being operational in 2017.

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of our dear husband and father. Jim was born in Battleford, Saskatchewan in 1942. When he was one year old, he moved to Vernon, BC with his parents and sisters where his dad was a member of the Armed Forces. In 1960 Jim moved to Castlegar with his parents and worked in the automotive trade. He acquired his mechanic papers in 1968. In 1962 he married Ardeth (Sewell) and they had three children: Robert, Dana and Craig. In 1979 Jim and his young family move back to Battleford where they farmed and raised Hereford cattle; however, the call of the mountains was very strong and they moved to Salmo in 1984. Jim worked for the Department of Highways as a mechanic and later the private road contractors. He retired as shop foreman in Nelson. He was a jack of all trades, and anything that he couldn’t buy, he made. His passion, aside from his family, was snowmobiling and quadding. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt and go camping with his friends and family. Jim filled his days puttering in his shop except for when he and Ardeth went for car rides. He loved his grandchildren very much and enjoyed helping them make things, or teaching them how to drive some of his equipment. They spent many hours driving his quad and snowmobile around the yard. Jim was predeceased by his parents Alex and Ada Speers of Vernon, his sister Rhoda of Langley, sister Alice of Port Coquitlam, an infant brother and his beloved grandson Brent. He is survived by Ardeth, his wife of 53 years, his sons Rob (Tamara), Craig and daughter Dana, several grandchildren and step grandchildren as well as a little great-granddaughter, his sister Margaret of Vernon and several nephews and nieces. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Al Grywacheski of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services™ has been entrusted with arrangements. ith unlicensed marijuana dispensaries popping up in urban areas and thousands of unregulated medical licences for home growing still in legal limbo, the Trudeau government is starting work on its promise to legalize recreational use. Marijuana was a media darling in the recent election, but meeting in Vancouver with provincial ministers last week, federal Health Minister Jane Philpott found herself preoccupied with issues deemed more urgent. These include shifting our post-war acute hospital model to community primary care, tackling aboriginal health care needs, pooling pharmaceutical purchases to slow rising costs, and meeting an urgent Supreme Court of Canada directive to legalize assisted dying. At the closing news conference in Vancouver, Philpott was asked how recreational marijuana should be sold. Licensed medical growers want exclusive rights do it by mail as permitted by the Harper government, another measure forced by our high court. Yes, liquor stores check ID. But the notion that marijuana might be sold next to beer and vodka in government stores deserves sober second thought, and serious scientific work of the kind that has shown damage to developing brains from teenage marijuana use. Of course all of this urban hand-wringing over pot stores ignores the de facto legalization that has existed across B.C. for decades. The Nelson Star had a funny story last week about a local woman’s discovery on Google Earth. Zooming in on area mountains, one finds not only the Purcell landmark Loki Peak, but also Weed Peak, Grow Op Peak, Cannabis Peak and Hydroponic Peak. I’ll say the same about other drugs that drive most B.C. crime, but that’s a subject for another day. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

‘Lucifer’ provides hell of a role for Tom Ellis THE C ANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - Some roles are just too hot to pass up. Such was the case for Tom Ellis, who said he had a hell of a time playing the devil in the new Fox/CTV series “Lucifer.” “I was very judicious about any of the jobs, any of the scripts that I read over pilot season,” said Ellis during a whirlwind press stop in Toronto last June. “And for me, this was just the most fun character. And it’s lovely as an actor if you can relish the job you’re doing.... I love working in comedy and I love working in drama and this seemed like a great hybrid.” The dramedy follows a bored and unhappy Lucifer Morningstar, who gives up his throne in Hell to retire in Los Angeles and run a piano bar. The playboy lifestyle suits him well, until the murder of a beautiful pop star he once knew hits him surprisingly hard, said Ellis. “For me, this show is not about the devil being evil. For me, this is a show about the devil coming to Earth and becoming human,” said the Welsh actor, a veteran of BBC productions. “It’s about humanization, and it’s also about humans looking within themselves.” The character is based on a Neil Gaiman book - “not on the Big Book” - added Ellis, whose father and uncle are Baptist ministers. While the show features some supernatural elements, Ellis said it’s a more offbeat take on the prince of darkness. “What I love about the show is it’s not relying in any way, shape or form on special effects, supernatural effects. “The appeal to me, of the show, is that, as much as that sounds like dark subject matter, it’s delivered in a very tongue-in-cheek way. He is a funny character.” “Lucifer” debuts this week on CTV and Fox.

Rock rewriting Oscar monologue THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Academy Awards producer Reginald Hudlin says host Chris Rock is hard at work rewriting his material for next month’s Oscar show. Hudlin said Rock is eager to host the 88th Academy Awards on Feb. 28, even as a few black celebrities have decided not to attend the show for its lack of diversity. He said he expects Rock to make jokes about the OscarsSoWhite hashtag, and that the film academy welcomes such humour. Hudlin said he’s confident Rock’s material “will deliver something that people will be talking about for weeks.”

has to know the truth. But as the Ottawa Citizen’s David Warren pointed out, with Trudeau truth never arises. Justin is our first postmodern Prime Minister who neither knows the difference between truth and lies nor cares. For such persons, “lies” are just things you don’t like to hear. Lacking prudence, lacking political experience, indeed, lacking experience of anything substantive – for snowboarding and drama coaching don’t cut it – Trudeau relies on show and imagination, not achievement. One wonders what Andy Leslie, Marc Garneau, or Bill Morneau, men who have actually distinguished themselves, think of their boss. A few policies have been announced. Here Trudeau illustrates another Conservative criticism. As Stephen Harper said, “the culture of the Liberal Party has not changed and will not change.”
Savings at the pump hit pocket book elsewhere
An editorial from the Prince George Citizen The obsession too many people have with the price of gas on any given day is lunacy. For those cheering the low prices currently being seen locally the fuel fumes have clouded their minds. They may be winning at the pump but they’re losing everywhere else. For a driver who needs 100 litres of gas to get the tank topped off, the savings from it costing 80 cents instead of a buck per litre is $20. Sounds great, except for the fact that $20 and arguably a lot more has already been taken out of their wallet. Let’s start with food prices, especially fruit and vegetables, which have soared in recent months, partly due to the sinking Canadian dollar but also because of a drought in California. “The percentage of our budget that goes to transportation is much smaller than the percentage of our budget that is consumed in food,” Ian Lee, an economics professor at Carleton University’s Sprott School of Business, told the Canadian Press. “Yes, we’re saving at the pump, but the savings are more than offset by what we’re paying in the food stores.” For lower-income earners and those living in poverty, gas prices aren’t that big of a deal because they either don’t own an automobile or restrict their driving to the basic to-and-from work. Rising food prices, however, particularly if they have children at home, can be the difference between paying the bills for heat and light or not. For those with more money than month, they still lose with low gas prices.
The value of their RRSPs and mutual funds are taking a beating, since stocks in energy companies likely form a significant part of their portfolio. Those stocks have fallen in time to the drop in oil prices. For those who plan to keep working for another decade or more, oil stocks can now be had for bargain prices, but for those within sight of the finishing line of their working career, this kind of hit can add months or even years to the longawaited date of finally telling the boss to take this job and shove it. But don’t feel too bad for the oil companies. They’re still looking after themselves (and you, if you’re invested in them directly or through your retirement savings). “When you hear about lower oil prices, it does not necessarily translate into lower gasoline prices,” Perry Sadorsky, associate professor of economics at the Schulich School of Business at York University, told CP. “The integrated oil companies have a tendency to keep the price at the pump higher in order to compensate for some of the lost profits they’re incurring on the production side.” And then there’s government. After nearly 10 years of the Stephen Harper Conservatives in power, the federal government is almost as dependent on taxes collected from energy producers as their Alberta counterparts. It’s going to take Justin Trudeau’s Liberals more than 100 days in office to turn that around. In the meantime, they made billions of dollars worth of campaign promises, including some major infrastructure spending, but the oil and gas revenues needed to pay for them are in the tank.
Today’s taxpayers will pay for it now in budget deficits and their kids will pay for it down the road in debt servicing charges. Suddenly saving $20 or $30 for each visit to the gas bar doesn’t look so rosy. Extremes in the market, both at the high or low end of the spectrum (hello, Vancouver real estate values), cause problems to the economy that are felt by consumers. Unreasonably low gas prices are battering the bottom line, too, just in a different way that unreasonably high gas prices do. Several market analysts have pointed out that the optimum price for a barrel of oil on the world market is about $60 (U.S. dollars, of course, not that worthless plastic garbage in our wallets) and Canadians should be paying about a dollar or so for each litre of regular gas. At those levels, oil patch jobs are sustainable, the stock values and profits of oil companies benefit Canadians setting aside money for retirement through their fund managers, the loonie can actually call itself a dollar without embarrassment, governments can count on a steady source of revenue and essential imported products, especially food, is affordable. For those all smiles as they fuel up at these prices, the reality is what they’re paying is no laughing matter.
Evidence was there before the election when Dan Gagnier, at the time Liberal campaign cochair, was giving lobbying advice to TransCanada Corporation. Since the Liberals had not yet been elected, he was fired. Before the government was sworn in, the Quebec government was asking Ottawa to match the $1.3 billion “investment” they were throwing at Bombardier’s hapless C-series of commercial aircraft. They are still under development but nobody wants them. Immediately after the Liberal victory, the stock in SNC-Lavalin and WSP Global rose handsomely. So-called infrastructure spending means lots of money to Montreal construction companies. What are the odds that the first big project is to rebuild the Champlain Bridge? Or there is the proposed trade deal with China. Bombardier has
a plant there. Power Corporation and the Demarais family have long standing interests in the country. Who cares about cybersecurity? In contrast, does any Albertan think that Laurentian Canada gives a hoot about $40 oil? Or $20 oil? Or oil at all? The only thing the Liberals have done about oil is ban tankers from the west coast. Oil was useful once to help pay for subsidized Quebec day care. But who needs oil now that deficits are available? Lacking experience, lacking prudence, but painfully aware of the vacuum that post-modern politics entails, Trudeau has had to rely on his small-minded Quebec prejudices. He meant it when he said that “Canada belongs to us.” We know who “us” are. Now Canada belongs to them. Barry Cooper is professor of political science at the University of Calgary.

Smoke Eaters drop thriller to Vipers in double OT JIM BAILEY
Times Sports Editor
The Trail Smoke Eaters ended their six game losing streak with an impressive 6-4 win over the Chilliwack Chiefs on Thursday, but dropped a crucial 3-2 game in double overtime to the Vernon Vipers on Saturday at the Cominco Arena. With over 1,200 fans in the stands celebrating Hockey Day in Trail, a Smokies win would have tied the Vipers for fourth place in the Interior division, but, despite the loss, the Smoke Eaters gave the crowd plenty to cheer about. The teams fired more than 100 shots at Vipers goalie Andrew Shortridge and Trail netminder Bailey MacBurnie, with Trail having the 54-52 edge, but it was the Vipers that earned the extra point and stretched its lead to three points over Trail for the final playoff spot. “This team, we get a lot of shots, and we see a lot of them hit him in the chest, but don’t take anything away from Shortridge, he was awesome tonight, as was Bailey,” said Smoke Eater assistant coach Curtis Toneff. “So we’re not going to hang our heads on this one. It looked a bit like an NHL game out there where it comes down to one little mistake.” Trail jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second period, but the Vipers battled back to tie it, and with 2:57 left in the second overtime period, Liam Finlay forced a turnover to the right of Trail goalie Bailey MacBurnie, and fed Odeen Tufto who wristed it in from the left hash mark past MacBurnie for the 3-2 victory. “I thought it was a very exciting game on both sides,” said Vipers head coach Mark Ferner. “Obviously lots of penalties kind of took the flow out of it, but I thought both teams played really hard and both teams had their chances.” The Smoke Eaters opened the scoring with 4:10 to play in the opening frame, when Kyle Howarth stripped the puck from the Viper defenceman inside the blue line and turned it into a 3-on1. Howarth broke in on the left side, dropped it back to a trailing Nick Halloran who then feathered a pass to Newton on the right wing for the tap in and his 10th goal of the season.

Dueling goaltenders turned aside over 100 shots on Saturday night at the Cominco Arena, but it was the Vernon Vipers’ Andrew Shortridge that came out on the winning end with a 3-2 double-overtime victory over the Smoke Eaters. (Below) Sharpshooters and top puck stoppers from the Senior Novice teams went head-to-head in a between-periods shoot out in recognition of Minor Hockey Day in Trail, where all Greater Trail minor hockey coaches and players received free entry to the Smokie game. Eighteen minor penalties through the first two periods marred the flow of a spirited match, that saw both goalies come up big time and again, with the shots 30-28 in favour of Vernon heading into the final frame. “Personally, I think two teams like this fighting for a playoff spot, I’d like to see it be let go a little bit, and let the two teams play hockey,” said Toneff. “I think it would be a better pace game but it’s not in our control and we know that. It’s not the coaches’ ideal situation, but both teams have some offensive players that can make plays, and both goalies played well, we’re just fortunate we came out on the winning end.” Trail went 0-for-7 on the power play while Vernon was 1-for-8. MacBurnie was named the game’s first star, with Tufto and Shortridge the game’s second and third stars respectively. “We got a good group, and we bounce back really good,” added the 18-year-old rookie, Howarth. “We play well against strong teams, and we only have strong teams going out, so I think we’re going to do some damage and make the playoffs.” In Thursday’ match, Evan MacEachern scored two goals and added an assistant in a 6-4 victory over the Chiefs. Newton also scored twice, while Brett Witala netted the winner for Trail 3:52 into the third period to make it 5-3. Harlan Orr tallied the other goal for Trail as Bailey MacBurnie stopped 38 shots, and Matteo Esposito 25 for the Chiefs. “The win Thursday bumped our little slump there,” said Toneff. “So it’s good to know we can be confident on home ice. We have three guys out, but some guys are stepping up in a big way, and tonight it just came down to a couple penalties and power plays . . . “They (Vernon Vipers) are three points up on us now, and we have some heavy competition coming up with West Kelowna and two against Penticton, so we’re going to start with West Kelowna and take it from there, and that’s all we can do.” Trail’s next game is on the road tonight in West Kelowna against the Warriors, before a home-andhome with the Vees on Friday in Penticton and Saturday at the Cominco Arena at 7:30 p.m. Smoke Signals: Trail forward Kyle Starr returned to the line up Saturday but was used sparingly, while Ross Armour and Jake Kauppila remained sidelined for the Smoke Eaters, and will likely be out for another week.

Super Bowl: tale of two QBs
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Today’s NFL is all about the quarterbacks, so perhaps it’s fitting that the 50th Super Bowl features a matchup between Peyton Manning’s Denver Broncos and Cam Newton’s Carolina Panthers. At 39, Manning - the only fivetime MVP in history and one of the faces of the league - is the oldest starting QB to lead a team to the big game. Most folks figure his fourth Super Sunday will be the last time he dons a helmet. “Oh, wow,” Newton said. “Playing ‘The Sheriff.”’ Newton, meanwhile, is part of the new guard. He is expected to be honoured as the MVP for the first time - fans chanted those three letters during the NFC championship postgame ceremony - and he’ll be playing in his first Super Bowl. Carolina (17-1) ran away with a 49-15 victory over the Arizona Cardinals for the NFC title Sunday night, after Denver (14-4) edged the New England Patriots
20-18 in the AFC. “There’s no question, this is a sweet day, this was a sweet victory,” Manning said. “To me, this victory sort of is a great example of what this entire season has been like. It hasn’t been easy.” The Feb. 7 game at Santa Clara, California, will be the Broncos’ record-tying eighth Super Bowl appearances - they won twice in the late 1990s - and the Panthers’ second. Carolina opened as a 4-point favourite with most bookmakers. Manning, of course, will get so much of the attention over the next two weeks. He is 1-2 in past Super Bowls, winning a championship with the Indianapolis Colts in 2007, then losing with the Colts in 2010, before losing with the Broncos in 2014. But this is a different version of Manning. Yes, he’s still as good as anyone at diagnosing defences and changing things up - or appearing
to, anyway - at the line of scrimmage. Yes, he’s still out there yelling “Omaha!” But he is not quite as capable as he was, once upon a time, when it comes to putting the football exactly where he wants it, especially on deep routes. This has hardly been a record-setting season for Manning - or, until now, one worth remembering. Overall, the bad far outweighed the good, including one game with a passer rating of 0.0, 17 interceptions to only nine touchdown passes in the regular season, being sidelined for six weeks with a series of injuries, his first NFL game as a backup, and vehemently denying a report linking Manning’s wife to the banned drug HGH. “My role has been different and my contributions are different,” Manning said. “But I’m fortunate and grateful that I have the opportunity to contribute still, in some way. And it’s a great honour to be going back to the Super Bowl.”
Nitehawks split weekend games
TIMES STAFF The Beaver Valley Nitehawks split a pair of road games against the Kootenay Conference opponents on the weekend beating the Golden Rockets Friday 6-1 before falling 5-2 to the Columbia Valley Rockies (CVR) on Saturday. The Nitehawks’ five game winning streak came to an abrupt halt on Saturday in Invermere, as the Rockies built a 3-1 second period lead and skated away with the 5-2 win. Doan Smith’s second goal of the game and ninth of the season with two minutes and 56 seconds to play in the middle frame proved to be the winner, as Smith fired home a Ryan St. Jean pass to give the Rockies a 3-1 lead. The win brings the 24-18-0-0 Rockies within four points of third place Fernie in the Eddie Mountain division standings, while the loss for the Hawks keeps them eight points ahead of Castlegar for first place in the Neil Murdoch division, with the Rebels having two games in hand. Tyler Ghiradosi opened the scoring for B.V. at 15:22 of the first period, finishing a set up from Jace Weegar and Braden Fuller for his 15th goal of the season. However, the Rockies replied. After Ghiradosi was sent off for elbowing, Doan Smith beat Hawks goalie Brett Clark to make it 1-1 at 5:31. Donoven Quintin then gave CVR the lead for good firing in a St. Jean pass at 4:07 to end the period with the Rockies outshooting Beaver Valley 14-12.
Smith’s was the lone goal in the second period despite the Nitehawks firing 15 shots at Rockies’ goalie Connor McKay. Harrison Davies made it 4-1 CVR with 8:16 to play in the third, and Michael Pruss drew the Hawks within two with a power play goal with 4:29 to play in regulation, but an empty-netter from Quinn Sobus iced for the Rockies. CVR’s leading scorer Michael Cardinal had three assists on the night to give him 37 on the season and 58 points to put him in a tie for third in league scoring. On Friday, three-point nights from Devin Nemes and Allan Pruss launched the Hawks to a 6-1 victory over the Golden Rockets. Goals from Nemes and Kyle Hope made it 2-0 B.V. Heading into the second period, where Golden’s Stephen Gaughran got one back to make it 2-1, just 46 seconds in. But goals from Michael Pruss, Dylan Heppler, and Allan Pruss put the game out of reach heading into the third, where McKoy Hauk scored into an inexplicably empty net with 45 seconds to play. The Hawks outshot Golden 42-21 with Tallon Kramer earning his eighth win of the season. Beaver Valley return home this weekend for games against the Creston Valley Thundercats on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday they host the surging 19-20-0-4 Grand Forks Border Bruins that currently hold down third place in the Murdoch division standings.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS PASADENA, Calif. - With all the changes in television over the past few decades, Dick Wolf has remained resilient and is now resurgent. A few years ago, the producer behind the “Law & Order” empire at NBC saw his three prime-time shows cut back to one, and was stung when the original series was cancelled just shy of setting a record for the longest-running scripted prime-time show. He settled for a tie. Now, Wolf makes the “Chicago” trilogy of dramas for NBC and is talking about a fourth. “Chicago Fire” started four years ago and averages 10 million viewers a week. “Chicago P.D.” is in its third season and was joined in November by “Chicago Med.” ”Law & Order: SVU“ is still breathing, too. “In this day and age, we’re just trying to build something bigger than one show in the middle of hundreds of other shows, and I think now we have sort of a ‘Chicago’ zeitgeist,” said Bob Greenblatt, NBC Entertainment president. “I think it’s innovative and fresh, and we’re just seeing more build as the weeks go on with these shows.” “Chicago Med” was the only new fall program to get higher ratings for subsequent episodes than it did for its premiere, Greenblatt said. The ripped-from-the-headlines dramas are more dependable than sexy, and they provide plenty of cross-pollination opportunities for NBC. “Med” and “Fire” run back-to-back on NBC’s Tuesday schedule, with “P.D.” airing on Wednesdays. February will have a crossover story that involves all of the series, with characters from each show appearing within the others. Those special promotions are a delicate balance for producers and NBC executives. Obviously, the crossover drives attention and compels viewers to watch the different series. But, noted NBC entertainment executive Jennifer Salke, there are risks in overdoing it. Not all “Chicago Fire” viewers, for example, watch the others - not even a majority. One reason procedurals are attractive is because each episode tells a complete story, and that’s not a formula to be messed with too much. Small integrations, like when an officer from “Chicago P.D.” appears in “Fire” just to illustrate the programs are operating in the same fictional world, are something to be watched for as well, Wolf said.

BOX OFFICE
‘The Revenant’ braves the blizzard and competition
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - The snowy frontier saga “The Revenant” fared best out of the movies that tried to survive a blizzard-ravaged box office. Weekend moviegoing was affected up and down the East Coast by Winter Storm Jonas, which forced theatre closures in Washington D.C. and New York, and caused hundreds of theatres to suspend showings. Studio executives said the storm had a major effect on business. “It had a huge effect on the entire marketplace,” said Kevin Grayson, head of domestic distribution for STX Entertainment, which debuted the horror thriller “The Boy.” ”Anywhere from 300 to 400 theatres were affected.“ Fittingly, the film that triumphed in the frigid winter weather was 20th Century Fox’s Oscarnominated “Revenant,” which took in an estimated $16 million in its third week of wide release. The Alejandro Inarritu-directed thriller, set in the 1820s, is proving to be one of Leonardo DiCaprio’s biggest hits with $119.2 million thus far. Disney’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” came in second with $14.3 million in its sixth week of release. “The Force Awakens,” with $1.94 billion globally to date, will likely cross $2 billion in the next week. Last week’s No. 1 movie, the Kevin Hart-Ice Cube comedy “Ride Along 2,” dropped steeply in its second week, sliding to third with $13 million for Universal. Those holdovers were trailed by a trio of new releases: “Dirty Grandpa,” ”The Boy“ and ”The 5th Wave,“ which all earned $10 million to $12 million over the weekend. Lionsgate’s “Dirty Grandpa,” narrowly edged out the other newcomers with an estimated $11.5 million. “The Boy,” a PG-13 rated supernatural tale that cost only about $10 million to make, earned an estimated $11.3 million. Sony’s “The 5th Wave,” which cost about $38 million to make, is a young-adult adaption from the first of Rick Yancey’s trilogy of science-fiction books about alien invasion. Starring Chloe Grace Moretz, “The 5th Wave” debut - $10.7 million didn’t suggest a budding YA franchise.

Dear Annie: I’d like to know if this is considered spousal abuse. A young couple become born-again Christians. The husband decides he wants to go back to school to become a minister. He quits his corporate job and moves his family out of state. His wife supports him and the children for four years as best she can. He graduates and “just can’t find the right job.” He volunteers two days a week counseling people. In the meantime, they are barely getting by. They don’t have enough money to send the kids to college, and they can’t afford their daughter’s wedding. The husband has decided not to get a paying job because he’s doing “God’s work.” He sleeps late every day and spends hours on the computer writing religious blog posts. His wife works full time and does the cleaning, shopping and all household chores. I think this is emotional abuse. What do you think? -- Concerned Relative
