A elderly couple has lost everything but the clothes they were wearing after their mobile home caught fire on Jan. 20. Fortunately for Kevin and Kathleen Coughlan, they were both able to get out of the house safely. Grand Forks Fire/Rescue were able to also save the couple’s pet dog and cat, but were unable to save the home. “We got called yesterday (Jan. 20) at around 5:30 p.m. to an electical short and a bang,” said Dale Heriot, Grand Forks Fire/Rescue chief. “I proceeded up there and called one engine up there. When I got there I saw smoke coming out of the vent. It was a single, mobile home with another roof and carport built over top of it.” Heriot said he asked the occupants to leave the trailer and head to the neighbours. “It was a very difficult fire KEVIN AND KATHLEEN COUGHLAN to fight,” he said. “It was right in both the trailer roof and the roof they put over top. It was a real tough one. We finally left the scene about 12:30 a.m.” Heriot added that the fire department couldn’t even get a truck up the driveway due to the amount of snow which had accummulated. “We certainly had some challenges with the rural setting in the winter time, and the snow,” he said. “Their driveway wasn’t plowed so we had to lay a line and pump water up from Son Ranch Road. We had to get Emcon to come sand the road twice because a couple of our apparatus were having trouble with traction. It was a difficult fire to fight.” Although not burnt down, the house was a write-off with all the water and smoke damage. “We had to pull the whole ceiling inside,” said Heriot. “Some of the trusses in the home were burnt through. The mobile home will be a total loss. Between that and the contents, I would say there is a couple hundred thousand dollars in damage.” “The owner even had gunpowder and ammunition there,” he said. “He had enough sense to tell us where that was and we had crews go in and get that out.” On the night of the fire, the couple first noticed a lot of smoke, which they first thought was coming from their woodstove. “We thought the woodstove was heating up excessively,” said Kevin. “I went over and checked the chimney and found it was hot but not really burning hot. I shut the wheels on the front and went and sat down for awhile. We noticed that there was not just a heat smell but also a sour smell like plastic or rubber burning.” • See COUPLE LOSES HOME page 8

of our waste stream. Even for residents, there’s not a lot of glass in their garbage.” Dueck said that glass containers are regulated under MMBC and is their responsibility not the RDKB. “They submitted a plan to the province as to how it will be gathered,” he said. “They have said it will be done at depots, because if it is at a co-mingle recycling program such as we have here, it will break and contaminate the rest of the materials. The best way to collect that material, as well as film plastic and styrofoam, is at an MMBC depot, which is at the landfill.” Another issue with the downtown bins is that they’re unmanned, unlike the landfill. “One of the requirements of a depot is that it is staffed,” said Dueck. “At the landfill there is staff to help people sort at the landfill. The way residents are being asked to recycle in the Boundary is the same as throughout the province.” He did say that glass collected at unmanned depots is a very dirty glass that has no end use. “It is used as cover and crush for our construction program,” said Dueck. “We call it downcycling. It has a use but it’s very minimal. It’s not really worth the effort in collecting it.” Dueck said that it is widely agreed that curbside collection service is the most convenient way of collecting material. “People use curbside collection for garbage, for green bins, and for recycling,” he said. “It’s a bit of a natural fit.” Because they are problematic materials, glass, film plastic and stryofoam are not collected at curbside. “They’re not a big part of the waste stream and so the province has agreed that the best way to collect them is at a staff depot,” said Dueck. Dueck said he’s only received a handful of calls regarding the removal of the recycling bins.

Teachers rejoice over news that court will hear federation’s case CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

Boundary educators join teachers around the province in rejoicing after learning that the Supreme Court of Canada will hear the BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) case regarding issues such as class size and composition. The ongoing case dates back to 2002 when the B.C. government took away teachers’ collective agreements by legislation. The Supreme Court of Canada granted the teachers the chance to appeal the 2015 Court of Appeal decision that found the provincial government legislation imposing contract terms on members of the BCTF in 2012 was constitutional. “The decision of the Supreme Court of Canada to hear the BCTF’s appeal of the 2015 BC Court of Appeal ruling is a very important step in the ongoing legal process and we are pleased to have the opportunity to present our arguments to the nation’s highest court,” said BCTF president Jim Iker is a recent press release. “It’s been 14 years since the original unconstitutional legislation that stripped our collective agreements, but BC teachers are still very committed to our efforts to win back those important working conditions for teachers, which are also our students’ learning conditions.” Education Minister Mike Bernier responded to the Supreme Court announcement by saying that the government is confident in their legal position and appreciate any further guidance the court may provide. “Regardless of the court challenge, we are working collaboratively with the BCTF to implement the new curriculum and ensure teachers are trained to deliver its benefits to students,” he said in a press release. “It’s worth noting that since the last round of bargaining government’s relationship with the BCTF has never been better.” Bernier added that the government will continue working with the teachers’ union to ensure students benefit from “making our great education system even better.” Norm Sabourin, president of the

Boundary District Teacher’s Association, said they are very pleased with the decision. He said the case is extremely important not only for B.C. teachers, but teachers and other union members across Canada. “It would have quite an effect on bargaining rights for all unions,” said Sabourin. “If you think about it, if the government is able to go in a strip collective bargaining language (by changing it as they see fit) any time they want it really weakens what a collective agreement can do. The collective agreement is a legally agreed upon contract and the government is simply allowed to go in and rip it up any time they want. It doesn’t make sense to us.” Sabourin said he expects the Supreme Court of Canada will hear the case in the fall of this year. He said a positive ruling in the teachers’ favour would mean a return to smaller class sizes and better class composition. “It would mean the (stripped collective agreement language) would be reinstated,” he said. “That would mean the class sizes would get smaller and more specialist teachers would be hired according to the ratios. It would mean the hiring of thousands of teachers. it would mean much more support for students. That’s what we’re shooting for. We don’t know what the Supreme Court will decide or what damages they will award. We’re just crossing our fingers and hoping justice will be served.” Teresa Rezansoff, SD51 (Boundary)board of trustees chair, said that there will be no change in the foreseeable future in daily school operations. “All it means for us is that down the road when the Supreme Court hears the case, which won’t likely be until fall, it could be potentially two years before we know the decision.” Rezansoff added that when the decision does come, it will be final. “So that’s positive to know there will be a final decision whichever ways it goes,” she said. “For planning purposes, for our parents and students, there’s no need to be concerned that this decision by the Supreme Court to hear the appeal from the B.C. teachers will affect classrooms in the immediate future.”

Bins’ removal inevitable

Recycling—it’s just what we do in the Kootenays. Most everyone is familiar with that jingle from a well-known commercial. In most cases, I think it’s fair to say it’s true. Residents in the Kootenays including Grand Forks and the Boundary care about the environment and don’t mind separating their recycling from their garbage. It can be a little daunting to know what you can recycle, what goes in the green bins, and what’s garbage. But knowing recycling will save wear and tear on our delicate planet is worth the extra effort for most of us. This brings us to the recycling bins at the Grand Forks Fire Hall. Those will be removed Feb. 1. The decision was made to allow more parking for fire department volunteers due to the new fire truck; however, make no mistake, the unmanned bins would have been removed eventually. It will seem like an inconvenience at first, but most everyone has curbside recycling. Yes, glass will have to be driven to the landfill, but perhaps neighbours could take turns making that drive. Businesses are impacted most because they’ll have to take everything to the landfill. Some businesses might have an employee make that trek, but concern over liability is a real issue; a solution could be turning to a private company to pick up the recycling. It’s only a five-minute drive to the landfill. We think it’s too inconvenient, but we will get used to it. In a year or two we’ll marvel that we had the luxury of another set of bins downtown only a few kilometres away.

Imagine that—the Tazpit Press Service is reaching out to me! Reckonings DELLA MALLETTE “We are happy to announce a new press service from Israel that directly reaches its subscribers from around the world with the latest news and updates from the region,” declared the header of a new email I started receiving a few months ago. “Tazpit Press Service (TPS) is a news agency that provides relevant, accurate and professional news information for international news outlets seeking to cover Israel and the Middle East. TPS covers a wide range of topics, including economics, security, politics, technology, agriculture, health, religion, and more.” Every few weeks, an email with headlines and a link to a web page shows up. Once at the web page, I’m given only a teaser

about the story. If I want to know more about the story headlined “International Musicians Gather for Israeli Metal Music Festival Despite BDS Protests,” I need to log in. I can have the service for free for three months, I’m told, and I’m promised “thousands of news reports from and about Israel.” I in no way want to diminish the importance of the TPS service; I’m using it as an example of the reach email allows. Snail mail, I wouldn’t be hearing from TPS at all. I recently started receiving emails from Glagoslav Publications. Now available worldwide, the company tells me, is Leo Tolstoy—Flight From Paradise by Pavel Basinsky; perhaps I’d be more interested in Asystole by Oleg Pavlov. The blurb tells me, “From the first pages it becomes apparent that Asystole is a novel about love of life in its purest, instinctive and intimate form. It’s also a novel about human faith in

its existence and a desire to experience this love.” I’m an avid reader, but I have no idea how I came to be on the emailing list of this company based in The Netherlands. A bit more interesting to me are emails from IOM Media Briefing (The Migration Newsdesk). These emails promise me the latest press briefing notes fromt he International Organization for Migration presented twice weekly at the UN in Geneva. These stories I do get to read. For example: “GREECE – With 3,771 deaths, 2015 was the deadliest year on record for migrants and refugees crossing the Mediterranean trying to reach Europe, reports IOM in a year-end summary. By comparison 3,279 deaths were recorded in the Mediterranean in 2014. Globally, IOM estimates that over 5,350 migrants died in 2015. IOM also recorded total sea arrivals to Europe in 2015 at 1,004,356 or almost five times the

previous year’s total of 219,000.” This email is the real deal and sometimes I chedk out the stories. They’re depressing (“IOM Launches Manual on Migrant Women and Gender Violence in Argentina,” and “IOM South Sudan Appeals for USD 80 Million to Address Mounting Humanitarian Needs” but reality needs to slap us in the face once in a while and tell us to pay attention. I just no idea why I started receiving the emails. I reckon I best get back to my email inbox: the Conservative Party has several messages for me; the Association for Mineral Exploration B.C. has important information; the provincial government has sent several press releases; CommunityWire wants to tell me about sprouting resolutions for a greener me… Maybe I’ll order a book from Glagoslav Publications instead, and head home to my couch for a good read. ~~~

Property assessments confusing

Editor, The Gazette: Re: Property tax increases Having noticed no concerns over the increase mentioned in the Jan. 20 issue of the Gazette, I wonder how many have even looked at their assessment. Smoke and mirrors by the BC Assessment Authority is once again used to confuse the average homeowner. To say that property values in Area

D/Rural Grand Forks are up 5-10 per cent is a real slap in the face. Where I live, right next to the North Fork Trailer Park, buildings in the neighbourhood of 25 years and newer are facing increases of 16-26 per cent. Mine is 21 per cent which is an increase of value of $60,000. The buildings with an increase of 26 per cent face an

increase of $123,000. Should you be interested in calculating your percentage increase, simply subject old value from new value, divide the increase by the old value and multiply by 100. It appears that “The Sherriff of Nottingham still lurks among us.” Larry Wunder, Grand Forks

Editor, The Gazette: City council is going ahead with the lawsuit attempting to eject Councilor Butler for alleged conflict of interest, at the Supreme Court in Vancouver Feb 1. Councilor Butler had a modest yard business, and willingly gave that up shortly after she was elected to council. End of story. But council still wants to oust Councilor Butler, at the taxpayers’ considerable expense. (Note that Councilor Butler must pay for her own legal defense.) Why? This is about water and water meters. Councilor Butler said things in opposition to the water meter program early on, in support of the residents who signed a petition against it. Apparently this council would not stand for that. Either she came on board, or they would launch a suit against her. Councilor Butler had the highest number of election votes of any of the councilors

currently in office—and they are trying to get rid of her. In other words, they are trying to chuck democracy. If they win, we will lose our democratic representation. This is not to be taken lightly. They also tried to get rid of the local CUPE president, a further attack on democracy. Since the start of all this water business, with the previous council, this town has basically been hijacked by rogue city council. They have an agenda, apparently zealously following the dogma of CAO Doug Allin. They will apparently sue anybody in their way, using your tax dollars to do it. They have an agenda which has little to do with the administration of Grand Forks. Notice all the attention to water and water meters and the rabid response to opposition. Comments abound about how strange things are in Grand Forks. I don’t know that many people, but even so, I personally know of two

families that moved out of town due to the tumult caused in Grand Forks by this council, the previous one, and the CAO Doug Allin. They are on a path of some sort of self-indulgent delusional power-hungry governance, oblivious to the fact that they are pissing off many, many residents in the town they are attempting to rule. What about the extremely controversial $192,000 “severance” payment to CAO Allin? To many, this reeks of impropriety. The hypocrisy and irony of it all: It should be the previous council and remainder of current council being brought before the Supreme Court, not Councilor Butler. This council and the previous one have taken on a tone of villainy. In the good old days, we would’ve stormed the castle and ousted the inhabitants. Jack Koochin, Grand Forks

Resident serious about Hockeyville nomination

CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

There is no doubt hockey is big in Grand Forks. The Bruins are surging, local minor hockey teams are dominating the competition, and senior leagues, men’s leagues and so on are as popular as ever. But is Grand Forks Hockeyville material? Once local resident thinks so and she is making plans to put forward our city for the popular nation-wide contest. “Kraft Hockeyville is a pre-season NHL hockey game and they pick cities from across Canada to host it,” said organizer Jane Pring. “You have to submit an entry to them explaining why your community is hockey-oriented, what could be done to your arena, and a bit of history on the community. They also want you to submit some photos.” Pring has until Feb. 7 to send in the nomination. From there, 10 communities will be announced as semi-finalists on March 3. Online voting will commence after that with the top two being announced on March 19. After another round of online voting, the winner will be announced on April 2. The winning community will also get $100,000 to fix up their arena. “I started thinking before Christmas that our arena is old and Grand Forks needs some good publicity,” said Pring. “I decided I was going to try this. I got in touch with our mayor and told him with I was going to do. I also talked to Gerry Foster because he knows all the history of hockey around here.” Pring has put together a letter with her answers to the three questions posed by the Hockeyville judges. For community passion and spirit for hockey, she writes, “Our passion and spirit for the game of hockey lies in our history. Grand Forks and the Boundary can rightfully claim to be the birthplace of hockey in B.C. The Boundary Hockey League was the first league formed in B.C. in 1908 and included the first hockey trophy presented in B.C.” As for the arena project, she talks about the roof needing fixing most of all. “The arena was built in 1965 and is now badly in need of a new roof for the building,” she writes. “We do get snow here and a lot of sunshine and it is uncomfortable for both spectators and players to watch and perform with water dripping down.” As for why Grand Forks should be Hockeyville, she writes, “The first thing that comes to mind is our history with hockey since the early 1900s. Our enthusiasm is still as strong if not stronger than ever. We had a hockey game in January to celebrate our hockey history and the arena was filled to the rafters.” Pring sent her nomination letter to council where it was brought up at council Monday night. After discussing it, council voted to have staff look into it further. “It would be great for Grand Forks,” said Mayor Frank Konrad. “We could really use a roof on the arena. That $100,000 would be nicely useable. Plus it would give us tremendous exposure with the NHL game that goes with it.” Pring said even if the city doesn’t win the top prize, there are consolation prizes ranging from $25,000 to $60,000. “It’s a great, free way to get the city out there,” said Pring. “I’d like to see the whole community come out and support the nomination.” Pring has been busy collecting photos of the arena and the teams playing there. New take on old scam POLICE BRIEFS By Gazette Staff

New version of CRA scam New this week is a change on the Canada Revenue Agency scam that has been happening for the last year or so, reported Cpl. Philip Crack of the Grand Forks RCMP detachment. The new version is that you first get the initial call from someone claiming to be from Canada Revenue Agency stating that you owe them money and that if you don’t pay, there will be a warrant issued for your arrest. A short time later, someone phones from a number that looks like it comes from an RCMP detachment, stating that they have a warrant for

your arrest and that you can take care of it by paying money by credit card over the phone. “It is important to note that the RCMP will never ask for money over the phone,” Crack said. Driver prohibited from driving, caught on ATV On Jan.19, a 42-year-old male was stopped on Gilpin Rd after police observed him riding an ATV down the road. The male was found to be prohibited from driving and having a long history of driving while prohibited. The male is now facing several charges of driving while prohibited, Crack confirmed.

Search finds methamphetamine, weapons On Jan. 20, a 40-year-old male was stopped on Central Avenue after being recognized as having warrants for his arrest. A search of the male and his vehicle located methamphetamine and several weapons. The male was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He was held in custody awaiting trial. Male arrested for assault On Jan. 21, police responded to a report of a domestic assault on 65th Avenue. “A 25-year-old male was arrested for assault, resist arrest and breach probation,” Crack reported. The male was held in custody.

Rotary inducts new member James Wilson, induction chair of the Grand Forks Rotary Club, reads the induction speech for newly sworn in member Gail Galvao (middle). Pinning the badge on Galvao was Shannon Profili, who recommended her to the club. The induction took place at the Jan. 21 meeting.

Looking for a new place to put your passion? Consider getting involved

Grand Forks Credit Union (GFCU) has been serving our members – who live near and far – since 1949. We are a member-owned financial cooperative. Each and every one of our members makes a difference to our well-being – both as a locally owned and operated company and as citizens living and contributing together within our communities. Imagine, if you will, the 19 original founders of our credit union meeting at the Grower’s Exchange one August evening in 1949 and contributing $30 each. Granted its charter on August 22, 1949, the Credit Union started attracting attention. Within a year, 50 members had joined and assets were over $400. Today, we are almost 9,000 members strong with more than $220 million dollars in assets providing a full range of competitive financial products and services and continually re-investing into our communities. What would the Boundary be like if the credit union had never been born – or suddenly disappeared today? From the beginning, our job has been to make a way for regular people to access financing to help them live their dreams… originally for farmers and small business. We’ve stayed true to our purpose, continuing in the tradition of the cooperative movement.

How do I express my interest to run in the election? If you are interested in becoming a candidate in the 2016 Board of Directors’ Election, please download the Candidates’ Intro Kit which outlines what is required of a Director in terms of time and qualifications. And please email us at info@gfdscu.com to express your interest in having a member of our Member & Community Relations Committee contact you. What is GFCU looking for in its prospective candidates? GFCU needs leaders who bring with them a broad range of skills and attributes that strongly align with our values and that support and strengthen the current Board’s ongoing commitment to implementing our strategic vision. Did you know…? Credit unions, called by various names around the world, are member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperatives that provide savings, credit and other financial services

to their members. Credit union membership is based on a common bond, a linkage shared by savers and borrowers who belong to a specific community, organization, religion or place of employment. Credit unions pool their members’ savings deposits and shares to finance their own loan portfolios rather than rely on outside capital. Members benefit from higher returns on savings, lower rates on loans and fewer fees on average. Credit unions worldwide offer members from all walks of life much more than financial services. They provide members the chance to own their own financial institution and help them create opportunities such as starting small businesses, growing farms, building family homes and educating their children. Regardless of account size in the credit union, each member may run for the volunteer board of directors and cast a vote in elections. In some countries, members encounter their first taste of democratic decision making through their credit unions.* *WOCCU.org website excerpt

Couple loses home to fire “We couldn’t figure out what it was,” said Kathleen. Kevin said he tapped the stove to gauge the heat and found it was actually cooling down. “I then heard a crackling sound followed by a big bang,” he said. “I went into the kitchen and she had the stove on so I checked to see if there was anything wrong with that.” Shortly after, Kevin figured that a breaker went off because

the house had lost all power. “We went outside and I checked the electric meter,” he said. “I pulled the ladder forward and Kath said she could see smoke throught the windows.” It was around that time that Kathleen called 9-1-1 with the intention of having them call the power company. “It was a really bad smell by then,” said Kathleen. “I asked them to call hydro because the fire was smoking

right up to the power box. 9-1-1 must have called the fire department. It’s a good thing they did.” Kevin said the fire crews arrived shortly after and the couple were told to go down to the main road. “I was talking to the hydro guy and as far as we knew no one had called the fire brigade but evidently they had been called,” he said. “The hydro guy told me to move my car and truck out of the way and by the time I did the fire brigade had arrived. Kath had come back from feeding the animals and still had on her rubber boots.” The couple said they were able to walk through the remains of the home the following day with the fire department to see if anything was salvageable. Kathleen said she was able to recover some rings and other jewellery but most everything else was too smoke-damaged to salvage. “We lost our home and all we have left is the barn and the chicken coop,” she said. “We couldn’t stay in there too long, it smelled so bad.” The cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical short in the wiring in the roof.

Despite losing most of their possessions, the Coughlans are happy to be safe as they try to figure out their next step. They are also very pleased with the help that the community has given so far. The pair, and their pets, have been staying at a neighbours since the fire. The couple, who have been in the same place for close to 25 years, are in their 70s and on a fixed pension. They did not have fire insurance and are currently trying to figure out what they will do next. Helping get the couple set up for the 72 hours following the fire was Jane Pring with the provincial emergency services program. After that time it is the Red Cross that will step up and help. The Coughlans will be put up in a motel until the end of January. After that, they will have to decide what to do next. They would like to move to 100 Mile House to be close to family. “We’re trying to find some place to stay after that,” said Kevin. “What we’d like to do is sell it and get out of here. We’ve got a son in 100 Mile House. He’s the only relative even remotely close. We’d like to move up there so that if anything like this hap-

If they don’t have insurance it’s basically the community who steps in and helps these people.” There is a bank account set up at the Grand Forks Credit Union under the name Peter Smith, a local resident and friend of theirs who set the account up to help the couple. Education

SD51 board looks forward to new framework Over the course of the past two years, the Ministry of Education in consultation with a wide group of partners has been developing a new Framework for Enhancing Student Learning. The new framework takes the place of district achievement contracts, superintendents’ reports on student achievement, district literacy plans and school planning councils. The framework is built around the following principles developed in collaboration with provincial education partners: The Framework for Enhancing Student Learning: • is grounded in the belief that all education partners are responsible for student learning, with each having unique responsibilities; • creates a system-wide focus on student learning, to ensure each student in B.C. achieves his or her potential; • is meaningful, impactful, flexible, realistic, and sustainable; • addresses differences in performance among particu-

lar groups of students, most notable Aboriginal stuKEVIN ARGUE dents, Children SD51 in Care, and Superintendent students with of Schools Special Needs; • is strength, support, evidence, and resultsbased; • reflects system-wide commitment to continuous improvement and life-long learning; and • continues to build public confidence in B.C.’s education system

What does this mean in the Boundary? When we were first introduced to the Framework for Enhancing Student Learning document we quickly held it up as a lens through which to view our beliefs and practices across School District 51. We were excited to find that many of the pillars of the new framework aligned with our existing work. It was encouraging to see we were on the right path, and that we should continue to support the current work being done in our schools and take it to a deeper level.

What can you expect to see across the Boundary?

At the school level, a few minor changes to the planning process will occur. It is a requirement in the New Framework to work alongside your school community when reviewing evidence to set School Goals for the coming year. Please come out and participate in this important process. Each school will be communicating to their community when these planning sessions will occur. Each school is required to have goals in the following areas: • Intellectual • Social Emotional • Career Development – Skills Development – Transitions to Post Secondary Learning At the district level, we have very similar responsibilities to schools. We are required to con-

sult with our communities as we go about the work of building district plans. The board of education and district staff will be meeting with each school PAC and other interested parents to discuss District Plans for Student Success, Financial Framework for Supporting Student Learning and Changes to Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting. This is a similar format used by the

Gallery 2 is excited to be presenting the first two exhibitions of 2016. Local(i)ty 2, curated by Carin Covin, presents the work of artists Nora Curiston, Laura Widmer and Brenda Feist in the Reid and West Galleries. This ambitious exhibition includes work in diverse media from all three artists that explore connection to place, with particular emphasis on artists working in smaller urban centres. As Carin Covin explains: “The title Local(i)ty 2 refers to the location that these artists work from, here in Grand Forks and in Kelowna. In a smaller centre, do we see a difference in the integrity of what art can be seen as today, how it is produced and how it can be given

“An unbelievably beautiful film, buttressed by Nick Hornby’s literate script and an unforgettable performance by Saoirse Ronan (Atonement, The Grand Budapest Hotel) as a young Irishwoman adrift in 1952 New York, Brooklyn is one of the strongest opening films VIFF has ever had.” Ken Eisner of the Georgia Straight penned this opinion of the upcoming Spotlight Films offering, showing at the GEM

Theatre Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m. Based on the novel by Colm Toibin, this is the tale of Eilis Lacey who followed her sister, Rose’s (Fiona Glascott, Resident Evil, Apartment 143) plan to leave Ireland and find a better future and job in the U.S. She departs terribly, enduring seasickness and a terrible relationship with her cabin mates, a nasty collection of individuals who conspire to lock her out of the toilet in a time of great need. A kind traveler gives her advice to live in Brooklyn, where

1970s. As with his printmaking techniques, Sawai draws his imagery from diverse sources including the Kama Sutra, traditional Japanese woodblock print styles and the often erotic imagery of The Pillow Book, as well as images from Inuit legends. Be sure to come and witness the amazing work of Noboru Sawai. Gallery 2 will also be presenting a new travelling heritage exhibit from The Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre (NNMCC), A Call for Justice—Fighting for Japanese Canadian Redress (1977-1988) inspired by the 25th anniversary of the signing of the redress agreement. Please keep watch for this exhibit, which will be open from March-June. Join us for the first opening reception of the year on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 1-3 p.m. for Local(i)ty 2 and Shunga.

an audience…” Curiston continues her working methodology of pairing the physical and the intangible, with a particular emphasis on the use of wind. Feist investigates the use of metaphor and social mapping of the individual through physical work that includes the use of blackboards and theatrestyle sets. Widmer, a printmaker, has begun to make her own paper that she incorporates into her practice in processes that becomes her metaphor for the search for the ultimate meaning of life. Shunga (Pictures of Spring), an exhibition of work by noted Japanese Canadian artist Noboru Sawai, will be in the east gallery. Sawai has devoted his printmaking practice to making sensuous, erotic art since the

many Irish immigrants live. Eilis settles there and becomes close to Father Flood (Oscar winner Jim Broadbent, Moulin Rouge, Gangs of New York), a Catholic priest who arranges for her job and accommodation. He also tries to help by enrolling her in bookkeeping classes. She gets a job in a department store and falls in love with an Italian boy named Tony (Emory Cohen, The Place Beyond The Pines, Beneath The Harvest Sky), who she meets at a dance. New York is becoming more comfortable. Father Flood informs Eilis that Rose has died suddenly of an undisclosed illness. After a trans-Atlantic phone call with her mother reveals that she is struggling to cope, Eilis decides to return home for a visit. Tony insists that if she is leaving they must get secretly married first. They enter a civil marriage without telling family and friends. Back in Ireland, everybody seems to be conspiring to keep Eilis from returning to Brooklyn. Her best friend is getting married a week after her scheduled return journey, and her mother has already accepted the invitation on her behalf. She is

set up on dates with eligible bachelor Jim, who is about to inherit property. She takes her sister’s place as a bookkeeper on an emergency basis. Eilis starts to feel that she now has the future in Ireland that did not exist when she left, and stops opening the letters she receives from Tony. Ok….that’s all you get. Suffice to say the marriage cover is blown and the plot gets even more interesting. Directed by John Crowley (Intermission, Boy A), Brooklyn Is nominated for three Oscars: Best Picture, Best Leading Actress (Ronan), and Best Writing /Screenplay based on previously published or produced material, Hornby and Toibin. Despite your opinion of the Oscars and the current controversy surrounding the institution, these remain no small feats. Brooklyn is also the recipient of 22 wins and 109 nominations. “….Brooklyn is a perfectly judged journey in time and place.” Ken Eisner, Georgia Straight Thanks to IMdB, Rotten Tomatoes, The Georgia Straight, Wikipedia, Maureen and Marius Paquet of the GEM Theatre, and our patrons and sponsors.

Nichols. “We had a workshop where we brought in an instructor. Now some of those at the workshop are planning to perform what they’ve learned.” The dance showcase began in 2003 and was hosted by Les Folles Jambettes as a fundraiser for a trip abroad for the group. “It was started and organized by them as a community support and network type event,” said Nichols. “The Hip Sisters hosted the second one and we did our fundraising for the local women’s coalition. Then Michelle Cipressi and her group (Rara Avis) hosted. Between the three groups we’ve alternated and taken turns at hosting.” Advance tickets are available in Grand Forks at New West Trading and at the Christina Lake Welcome Centre.

It is almost time once again for Grand Forks’ very own Dance Extravaganza, which this year will be hosted by the Hip Sisters. The extravagant dance show this year will be tomorrow (Thursday, Jan. 28) at the GFSS auditorium starting at 7 p.m. There will be a few new things planned at this year’s event including a kung-fu exhibition. “Ticket proceeds will be going to the Rock Creek and Westbridge fire victims relief fund through the RDKB,” said Laurie Nichols of the Hip Sisters. “The concession proceeds are going to the Grand Forks Secondary students who are involved in the Global Citizenship Club. They are fundraising to go to Ecuador in the spring of 2017.” Nichols said giving the proceeds to Boundary fire victims made a lot of sense after what the area went through in the summer. “It’s almost unfathomable to think of what it would be like to lose your house,” she said. “When people are displaced from their homes, with or without fire insurance, just how disruptive it would be to lose everything. We want to fundraise for a local event rather than abroad like we had done before.” The theme for this year’s event is ‘Movement in the Boundary.’ Nichols said one of the big changes this year is the inclusion of other nondance related groups. “We added other things that are also good for your body that might be a little slower paced such as tai chi,” she said. “It’s not dance but it’s body movement and still a lovely thing the community has to offer. Kung-fu has also adapted one of their routines to make it more stage presentation friendly. Martial arts has never been there.” Also brand new at the show will be African stick drum dancing, performed mainly by members of the The Hip Sisters practice an original number called Barcelona Nights for the upcoming dance event during a recent rehearsal Hip Sisters. “That’s exciting,” said at the GFSS auditorium. Exercise to reduce arthritis symptoms

A

cross the North American continent, more than 50 million people are living with doctordiagnosed arthritis. So says the Arthritis Foundation, which projects that figure will rise to 67 million by the year 2030. Simply put, arthritis is a significant problem, one that can not only affect a person’s quality of life, but also his or her pocketbook, as the Arthritis Foundation notes that wokingage men and women (those between the ages of 18 and 64) who contend with arthritis are less likely to be employed than people of the same age who do not have arthritis. Arthritis is not only bad for employees, but also for employers, as it accounts for $156 billion annually in lost wages and medical expenses. Exercise may be the last thing on many arthritis sufferers’ minds, but exercise can play a vital role in reducing the often painful symptoms associated with arthritis. Among its other benefits, exercise can strengthen the muscles around arthritic joints and help men and women maintain bone strength. In addition, the Mayo

Clinic notes that lack of exercise can make joints feel more painful and stiff, as a sedentary lifestyle will ultimately contribute to putting more stress on joints. Upon being diagnosed with arthritis, patients should speak with their physicians about the best way to use exercise to combat and relieve their symptoms. Some patients may require physical therapy, while others might be able to work with their physicians to develop an exercise regimen that can help reduce the severity of their symptoms and any pain that accompanies those symptoms. The following are some types of exercises that figure to play a strong role in managing arthritis and improving quality of life. • Aerobic exercises: Lowimpact aerobic exercises, such as walking and swimming, can help arthritis sufferers alleviate their symptoms and improve their overall health. Arthritis sufferers who have not exercised in awhile because of their pain may have gained weight as a result, and aerobic exercise is a great way to shed extra pounds. Losing excess weight is a great way to make physi-

cal activity less taxing on your joints as well. • Range-of-motion: Rangeof-motion exercises are typically simple and don’t take much time, but when done correctly, such exercises can be very effective at relieving the stiffness associated with arthritis. A physician or physical therapist might advise you to do rangeof-motion exercises each day, and you may even need to do them a few times each day. Adhere to this advice, continuing to perform the exercises as long as your doctor or physical therapists deems them necessary. • Strength training: As previously noted, arthritis sufferers may feel as though lifting weights will only exacerbate their existing symptoms. But strength training will strengthen the muscles around the joints, providing more support for those joints and ultimately reducing symptoms of pain. Speak with your physician or physical therapist about appropriate strength-training activities and the importance of rest. If you experience any pain during strength-training sessions, stop immediately and report the pain to your physician.

Stay safe during winter workouts Athletes devoted to outdoor workouts do not abandon their routines when winter rears its chilly head. While it can be difficult to embrace the great outdoors when temperatures hover around the freezing point, maintaining your motivation at such times bodes well for your fitness goals the rest of the year. Staying warm is a top priority for athletes who exercise outdoors during the winter months. While there’s no guarantee winter winds won’t test your willpower, there are some ways to stay warm when working out in colder climates. • Wear appropriate headgear. For years, many people subscribed to the conventional wisdom that suggested people lose 40 to 45 per cent of their body heat through their heads. But in 2008, researchers at Indiana University debunked that myth, suggesting that if humans lost that much heat through their heads, then they

would be just as cold when going outside without a hat on as they would be if they left home without wearing any pants. But wearing headgear when exercising outdoors is still a good idea, as the head is more sensitive to changes in temperature than many other areas of the body. • Layer correctly. Layering has long been a reliable way to beat the cold when temperatures are at their lowest. But layering must be done correctly to be effective. When choosing your workout gear, choose an inner layer that will move moisture away from your skin. Cotton retains moisture, and that means your sweat will cling to your body and make you feel cold. Once you find a shirt made with moisture-wicking material to wear against your skin, look for a second layer that also wicks moisture so you can more effectively control your body temperature.

Your outer layer should be capable of handling the elements, so look for something that is waterproof and wind-resistant. • Don’t forget footwear. When choosing workout socks, avoid cotton socks that don’t wick moisture away from your feet. Acrylic can be more effective at wicking moisture away from your feet than cotton. • Know your weather reports. While it’s admirable to stay on course with your outdoor workouts in the winter, don’t allow your devotion to overtake your common sense. Check the forecast before beginning an outdoor exercise, paying particular attention to the wind chil. According to the Mayo Clinic, frostbite can occur when skin is exposed to wind chill levels below minus 18 F for 30 minutes. If need be, shorten outdoor workout routines and find ways to exercise indoors when wind chills get dangerously low.

The Heart Foundation reports that heart disease, which includes diseases of the heart and cardiovascular system and stroke, is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States, affecting both men

and women and most racial/ethnic groups. Heart disease also is one of the leading causes of death in Canada, claiming more than 33,000 lives per year. Many factors contribute to

the development of heart disease, including smoking, lack of exercise and stress. Diet and whether a person is overweight or obese also can have a direct link to heart health. Diet, particularly for those with diabetes and poorly controlled blood sugar levels, is a major concern. A variety of foods are considered helpful for maintaining a strong and healthy heart and cardiovascular system, while others can contribute to conditions that may eventually lead to cardiovascular disease or cardiac arrest. Moderation enables a person to sample a little of everything, but not to make any one food a habit. The following are some foods to promote heart health and some foods you might want to avoid.

Good • Tree nuts: Tree nuts contain unsaturated fats that can help lower LDL cholesterol (the bad stuff) and improve HDL (the good stuff). Nuts also are a filling source of protein and other healthy nutrients. • Whole grains: Whole grains contain complex carbohydrates for energy, as well as protein and fiber. Fiber can help scrub cholesterol from the blood, lower-

ing bad cholesterol levels. • Fatty fish: Many cold-water, fatty fish, such as halibut, herring and salmon, contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are heart-healthy. Omega-3s also can be found in walnuts, flaxseed and some soy products. • Beans: Beans and other legumes are an excellent source of protein and can be a stand-in for meats that are high in saturated fat. Beans also contain cholesterol-lowering soluble fiber and folate, which can reduce blood homocystein levels. The Bean Institute reports that consuming beans may reduce cholesterol levels by roughly six to 10 percent. • Yogurt: Researchers in Japan found yogurt may protect against gum disease. Left untreated, gum disease may elevate a person’s risk for heart disease. Yogurt contains good bacteria that can counteract bad bacteria and boost immunity. • Raisins: Raisins contain antioxidants that may help reduce inflammation. Inflammation is often linked to heart disease and other debilitating conditions. Fresh produce also is a good source of antioxidants. Poor • Fried foods: Many fried foods have little nutritional value, as they tend to be high in saturated and trans fats. French fries

are particularly bad because they are carbohydrates fried and then doused in salt. • Sausage: Processed meats have frequently earned a bad reputation among cardiologists, but sausage can be a big offender, due in large part to its high saturated fat content. • Red meats: Enjoying a steak is probably not as bad as eating a deep-fried brownie, but it’s best to limit red meat consumption to about 10 percent or less of your diet. Red meats can have a considerable amount of cholesterol, saturated fat and calories. • Added sugars: Sugar can increase blood pressure and triglyceride levels. Sugar often hides out in foods that you would not associate with the sweetener. Plus, many people unwittingly consume too much sugar simply through sugar-sweetened beverages and ready-to-eat cereals. • Salty foods: Leave the salt shaker in the spice cabinet and opt for herbs for flavoring, advises the American Heart Association. High-sodium diets often are to blame for hypertension, a major risk factor for heart disease. • Dairy: Artery-clogging saturated fat also can be found in dairy products, particularly the full-fat versions. Butter, sour cream and milk can be problematic when people overindulge. Opt for lowfat dairy when possible.

The technological advancements made in the 21st century have undoubtedly made life easier in many ways, but this golden age of gadgets has not come without some negative side effects. Thanks to the near-constant availability of the Internet and devices like smartphones and tablets, many men and women find it difficult to maintain their focus throughout the day. But while such distractions are never too far away, there are some ways to stay focused and productive. • Get more exercise. Studies have shown that exercise and improved mental focus are linked. In a 2013 analysis of 19 studies involving more than 500 children, teenagers and young adults, researchers found that exercise sessions between 10 and 40 minutes immediately boosted concentration and mental focus. That improvement might be a result of ex-

ercise increasing blood flow to the brain. Men and women who find themselves struggling to focus at work after lunchtime may benefit from incorporating some exercise, whether it’s a brief walk or a more strenuous workout, into their midday routines. • Perform breathing exercises. Nervousness is an oftoverlooked cause of loss of focus. When nervous, breath can become shallow and restricted, which can have a negative impact on the flow of oxygen to your brain, making it more difficult to concentrate. Professional athletes have long espoused to the virtues of breathing exercises as a means to calming their nerves, and professionals can follow suit. Some simple breathing exercises can help busy professionals multitask more effectively by helping them concentrate on the tasks at hand and overcome the distraction of having so much to do.

• Stay hydrated. A recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that dehydration caused loss of focus and a sense of fatigue among women. While the loss of focus was considered insubstantial and the study only examined women, remaining hydrated throughout the day may make it easier to focus on work and other tasks throughout the day. • Get adequate sleep. One of the best ways to improve focus during the day is to make sure you’re getting enough sleep at night. Sleep deprivation produces a host of negative consequences, not the least of which is its impact on cognitive functioning. Focusing in today’s atmosphere of constant distractions can be difficult, but men and women can overcome diversions by employing a handful of successful strategies aimed at improving concentration.

Weekend sweep for Bruins

CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

After winning three games this weekend in three different cities, the Grand Forks Border Bruins look to be back on track. Coming off four straight losses, the Bruins needed to get focused again. It would’ve been easy to rest on their laurels after clinching a play-off spot last week, but the boys stepped it up and got the weekend sweep. “We got healthy and had a bit of a re-buy in,” said head coach and general manager Emery Olauson. “I think the Foundation Builder’s game we had (Jan. 2) was really taxing on us. We had a whole bunch of suspensions. It was a really rough game. It took a toll on us.” Olauson said the team has been much more disciplined since and has mostly stayed out of the penalty box. “More than anything having our team back together healthy and not suspended,” he said. “We want to create the best opportunities to win games and not spend the game in the penalty box.” On Friday, the Bruins traveled to Kelowna where they beat the Chiefs 5-3 after taking a 3-0 lead early. Dylan Haney, with two, and Tyler Fyfe gave GF the early lead before Jonathan Lee put the Chiefs on the board with 3:35 left in the first. The GFSS Grade 8 girls won their second game in a row on Jan. 20 after beating J.L. Crowe 34-22 in Trail. Emily Stewart (pictured left) led the Wolves with 11 points, while Kiyomi Dunnet added eight. In the later game, the GFSS junior girls team rebounded from a slow start to defeat the J.L. Crowe juniors 32-14 led by 12 points from Elizabeth Henne and six points from Tara Makortoff. “We really struggled in the first quarter, scoring only one point,” said coach Craig Lindsay. “We stepped it up in the second quarter and pulled away with some solid pressure defence and strong play near the basket.” The juniors return from exams with a tournament in Midway on Feb. 12-13. Project seeks citizen historians SUBMITTED

to the Grand Forks Gazette

A global project has been launched which will research the lives and wartime service of ‘Geordies’—from the North-East of England—in the armies of Australia, New Zealand, Newfoundland, and Canada during the First World War. “Dominion Geordies in World War One”—funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council—will seek to “crowdsource” research by recruiting volunteer researchers in Canada and overseas. Dr James McConnel, history lecturer at Northumbria University, explained: “The first stage of the project will involve collecting information that will help us build a comprehensive and fascinating insight into the stories of so many of the local men and women of the North East who, having left their native land in the three decades or so before the war, found themselves volunteering to return and fight for the homeland in the campaigns of the war across the world. “By better understanding their complex identities, we hope to get a clearer picture of a fascinating aspect of the First World War that has been almost completely forgotten.” Take, for example, George Burdon McKean. Originally from Willington, County Durham, he was a student at the University of Alberta when the war

broke out and served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was awarded the Victoria Cross, the Military Medal and, after he was commissioned as an officer, the Military Cross—making him one of only a hand-

The research will consider not only individual “migration histories” like these, but also the way that individuals and communities saw their own identities—as “Geordies” and Britons, but also Australians, CaIn Loving Memory nadians, or New Zealanders. The information for the database will be gathered by “citizen historians” and the 12-month project is open to anyone. All you need is an inSeptember 20, 1982 – terest in the First World War. You left us beautiful memories, Your love is still our guide. And although we cannot see you, You are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, And nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again.

1929 – 2016 Born to Howard and Hazel Smith of Rock Creek on June 5, 1929. Passed away January 16, 2016. Neil was predeceased by his parents, his brother Howard and Betty, his wife of 52 years. He is survived by his daughter Barb (Harvey) Comazzetto, sons Ian (Bev) and Larry, grandchildren Jordana (Jeff), Jeremy, Brookelyn and Coleton and great grandson Deacon. Neil’s whole life revolved around agriculture. Except for four years spent in South Africa as a young boy and absences for schooling, he lived and worked on the family ranch his entire life. A graduate of the School of Agriculture at the University of Saskatoon he never stopped studying the industry as he strove to keep up with the many advances he saw in his lifetime. He was, for many years, an active member of both the local Kettle River Stockmen’s Association and the Southern Interior Stockmen’s Association, had served on the executive and been president of both, as well as sitting on many other industry committees. Neil was for many years the leader of the Boundary 4H Beef club and 4H was very much a part of him to the end. Neil enjoyed showing cattle as a young man and later judged many fairs and shows around the province. He was also very active in the Rock Creek Fair Association for much of his life. Participating in these organizations was his recreation and through which he made many lasting friendships. Neil was proud of the accomplishments made in developing the ranch from where his father had left off and was happy to see it still in the family. He never really retired but, rather, was pressed into observer status these past few years due to ill health. No service by request. Donations in Neil’s memory can be made to Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Society of B.C. “Take off your gloves and put them down, no more sweat and worry for you now. Your labour is done, your home now is heaven; no more must you wait, Your legacy lives on, your love of the land, and we will close the gate.” Condolences and tributes may be directed to the family by visiting www.nunes-pottinger.com
