A small group of area residents protested against the state of the area’s winter roads outside of MLA Bill Bennett’s office last week. up in favour of the job Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting LP has been doing this year. “This year, up until Christmas, I’ve had fewer complaints about road conditions and maintenance than any other year I’ve been MLA,” said Bennett. He added that according to evidence he has received, there are far less accidents so far this year than five years ago. He noted that Mainroad gets monitored and graded on a regular basis, with more than 300 on-site audits or reviews. Bennett also said that the people calling for a change in highway maintenance
are looking to have the responsibility returned to the public sector. He asserted that if that were to happen, costs would go up significantly and that he didn’t feel that change was going to occur. Bennetto said that over the past few years, highways in the region have been safer. “Over the past years, up to 2014, the incidents on the highways, summer and winter, have been reduced by half,” said Bennetto. Tamara CartwrightPoulits, with the Facebook group ‘Taking Back East Kootenay Highways’ said at a protest organized outside
of Bennett’s office, that she has been frustrated with the state of winter highways in the region. “We have always maintained that this is not about the employees of Mainroad,” said Cartwright-Poulits. “We just want Mainroad to go out there, and do there job properly and have the province hold them accountable. The contract for the area’s roads is up for renewal this year. The closing date for the bids is February 18, with Bennett saying that international companies, and some from Alberta, Ontario and B.C. have expressed interest.

Breed specific bylaw removed for city Staff has completed a thorough review of the City of Cranbrook Animal Control Bylaw which Council adopted at their regular meeting
on Monday night. The exercise was intended to be a housekeeping review; however the process ended up being quite extensive
www.kootenayadvertiser.com 5
and required a number of changes. Those changes include: the removal of breed specific licensing; regulations of off-leash parks; requirements around wild animals, provisions related to vicious and dangerous dogs and a handful of housekeeping amendments related to
number of pets allowed to be kept, notice of impoundment and updates references to provincial legislation. “The removal of breed specific licensing will encourage all residents of Cranbrook to license their dog, regardless of breed,” said Deb Girvin, Bylaw Services
Manager for the City of Cranbrook. The previous bylaw required a higher licence fee for pitbulls, which served as a deterrent to complying with licence requirements and basically compromised the purpose of the licensing program. “This philosophy has
been confirmed by an extensive study conducted by the SPCA,” Girvin notes. Other changes to the previous Animal Control bylaw were necessary to align regulations with provincial legislation with respect to keeping wild animals and establishing criteria
for deeming a dog as vicious, or dangerous. To review the new Animal Control Bylaw No. 3845, 2016, visit our website www.cranbrook.ca and click on ‘Bylaws & Council Information’ under City of Cranbrook links on the homepage.

Views Opinion: Cull secrecy no favour for anyone by Brian Coombs This year’s deer cull was certainly more eventful than the good people on the Cranbrook City Council hoped for. However, many are not convinced the cull was about removing deer at all and was instead, about seeing to the interests of the electorate. To fully understand what happened with this year’s deer removal program, it is probably helpful to define what it isn’t first. • It doesn’t seem to be a good way to reduce deer numbers. This is backed up by the city’s own report on the program. In 2010, there were 104 deer (whitetail and mule) in the city and
the latest count showed 137, the highest amount of deer in the city since the cull started. Between those years the population seemed to hover at around 100 deer. • Regardless of the fact that 855 pounds of meat were produced, which were processed and distributed to three local organizations as hamburger, it is not deer farming. Or at least it is not inexpensive deer farming as the cull’s cost ($10,374) works out to a little over $12 per pound for the meat. • It is not really working to get rid of the aggressive deer. Again, according to the Urban Deer Management Annual Report, while 2010 saw one aggressive deer
destroyed, followed by two in 2011, there have been no aggressive deer killed since, even though there were 42 complaints of problem deer in 2011, dropping to 19 complaints in 2014. Now that we know what the cull isn’t, here is what it is. At the very least it was the will of the majority of residents who responded to a well-publicized survey. Now the real numbers behind the survey were around 650 respondents, with 70 per cent of those voting in favour of the cull. Those who were very much opposed to the cull had their chance to say no and either didn’t take it, or there weren’t that many of them. Some even said that the questions were leading and skewed answers to be in favour of a cull. That said, a city council trying to work
for the will of the citizenry is a good thing. With what the cull is and isn’t out of the way, let’s look at what the real issue is with this year’s culling. That is the apparent ‘bait and switch’ tactic used by City Council. The City proudly proclaimed its deer translocation program weeks before the news leaked out that it was doing a cull anyway. Speaking with residents, it seemed to be the consensus that the city was not going to do a cull and was trying something new instead. It is unclear (because the Mayor and council refused to answer questions about it) why the City felt that it had to authorize the cull in secret. What is clear is that this action did the people on both sides of the culling question a disservice. Those who were against
the killing of the deer were at first happy with the translocation news, and then angry with the council’s secrecy about the cull. Those in favour of culling feel that their position is right and defensible as they were the majority in the above-mentioned survey. The secrecy involved intimates that the City Council felt it was doing something wrong, but was doing it anyway. That group deserved to have the City’s open support in the endeavour—after all, the Mayor has used their survey response as the driving force behind the initiative. The previous City Council learned the hard way that keeping something like this secret leads to resentment from the electorate. Councils have to know that the people who elected
them are not children who need to be kept in the dark about how the world works. Chances are there is not a single person on the council who hasn’t, in the past, decried government secrecy. Last year’s cull was shortened considerably after vandalism to the traps, but then again, those trap locations were not publicized. The vandals found them anyway, much like people found and filmed the undisclosed traps and gave the footage to the Animal Alliance this year. Cranbrook is not a big city. If there is a trap on your block, chances are you know about it. Expecting to keep it secret, at best, shows a kind of naivety not expected in public officials. So provided that the Council felt morally correct in its decision to
do the cull, why would it do it in secret? The most compelling reason is that Council members felt that putting it out in the open would damage their chances of re-election. People who seek public service know that they are elected to speak for the citizenry and should at all times try to do what they think is right regardless of it hurting their chance of getting elected again. If Council had truly believed that the deer cull was the best thing for Cranbrook it should have been forthright from the start. That shows a conviction to do the right thing regardless of the political consequences. Now, after everything has come to surface, it looks like the people on Council were only trying to keep their jobs.

Soon to retire from his position at Canadian Tire, Owner/Operator Richard Reinders will miss his staff and community organizations he has been involved with. Richard Reinders has been the owner/operator of the Cranbrook Canadian Tire store since 1998. He is soon to retire as a new owner is coming to the city, who will open a new Canadian Tire outlet in the old Target location at the Tamarack Mall. Reinders moved to the community from Newfoundland and took ownership of the Canadian Tire store in 1998. Under his direction, the store has become an integral part of the community and shortly after coming here, he expanded the store. “We expanded in 2000,” said Reinders. “We should have expanded more, but we were restricted by the streets around us.” He said that his most pleasant memories of his time at the store all involved his staff. Reinders added that in cleaning up his office after 17 years, he found a newspaper article written about him first coming to the community. “When I came to the last paragraph, and this is not word for word, I had to laugh,” said Reinders. “I was talking about the amount of hours involved in running a store. I said that there were people who will not work after 5 o’clock, but those are probably people who do not want to work before 5 either. That is typical of me.” When asked if he had any tips for the income dealer, Reinders was succinct. “It is all about customer service,” explained
Reinders. “When I look at my store, it is a big, small store. What I mean by that is we have one aisle that goes right to the back. Whatever you are looking for will either be on the left or right and because it is only 27,000 square feet, it is most likely you will see staff, or two or three staff, somewhere. With the new store being twice as big, that is not going to be as easy.” Reinders said that in his time here the store has had great customer response. He partially credits this success to the parent company’s penchant for dealing with customer complaints immediately. “If you don’t respond to a complaint right away, you get a message from the head office. The corporation as a whole is majorly into customer satisfaction,” said Reinders. And like many successful business people, Reinders said that most of his best memories come from helping out the community after work hours. He is part of the Hospital Foundation, worked on the Theatre Board, and has been on the board of the College of the Rockies. “I did that for myself,” said Reinders. “Now I know a lot of people and it was important for me because otherwise it would be pretty boring just running a Canadian Tire Store. I enjoyed doing all of that very much.” The incoming store owner’s name is Mike Feener. He is moving from New Brunswick

3 Facts You Need To Know About
Smart Meters
1. More than 99% of BC Hydro customers have a smart meter - almost 2 million! The smart meter program was delivered $153 million less than budgeted ($930 M). Like any electronic device and same as the old meters, a certain number of meters are replaced annually as a matter of course. 2. Smart meters allowed BC Hydro to restore power quicker following recent major storms because Hydro can now remotely check meters in an area to ensure power has been restored allowing crews to move to the next outage more quickly. 3. Smart meters have reduced electricity theft more than predicted. Another benefit - most customers can view their hourly and daily energy use through MyHydro account because of their smart meter. THE SECOND FIRST DATE Dress up to the nines and go to a fancy restaurant with your partner. Before setting out, agree to pretend that this is a first date. This little game will help you both rediscover the person you share your life with, without all the embarrassment of a first date. MASSAGE Improvise a massage parlour at home before your partner arrives. Cover a mattress with a soft blanket and organize one or two cushions for extra comfort. Light some candles, put on some gentle music and scatter rose petals on the floor, leading from the front door to the massage table. Now all your loved one has to do is to follow this inviting trail to discover your talents as a massage therapist. Stock up on some good quality massage oil — or maybe even an edible one. MEMORIES OF LOVE Organize a trip down memory lane, literally. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been together for five, fifteen or thirty years; the fun will still be worth it. Did you meet at university? Return to your old campus and share a passionate kiss, just like in the early days of your relationship. Maybe you could even find the exact spot where you shared your first kiss. Did you used to slow dance to a particular song on your first few dates? Play the song again, either at home or in a bar with a jukebox, and let your bodies remember those magical moments.

2016 Nissan Pathfinder Overall: Seven- and eightpassenger full-size wagons like the Pathfinder have really put the hurt on minivan popularity; more rugged styling and allwheel-drive availability are likely explanations. Hybrid model will not return for 2016. Drivetrain: All models employ a 260-horsepower V6; both front- and four-wheel-drive models work with a continuously variable transmission. The Pathfinder has proven itself to be a popular choice among buyers with families who need enough seats for themselves and their offspring. When
not loaded up with passengers, the Pathfinder has plenty of space for cargo, camping gear, sports equipment or binge-buying Costco runs. Whatever the need, this big Nissan can probably handle it. The Pathfinder also has no problem getting up to steam thanks to a 3.5-litre V6 that generates 260 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. It’s teamed with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that does reasonably well operating in a similar fashion to a traditional automatic. Note that for 2016, Nissan has deleted the Hybrid Pathfinder. Still offered,

of course, is Nissan’s All-Mode 4x4-i option allows you to select either two- or four-wheel-drive or engage the “Auto” setting and let the system make the call, based on which tire/tires has/have traction. Heading downhill is easier with the Pathfinder’s standard hill-descent control for all 4x4 models. For passengers, the second-row split-folding seat comes with 14 centimetres of fore and aft travel and can be tipped forward to access the third row even if a child’s booster seat has been attached. The available third row seat (also split-folding) reclines for greater comfort. The
base Pathfinder S arrives with tri-zone climate control and 14 beverage holders. The SV adds roof rails and a rearview monitor while leather-covered seats, remote engine start, heated steering wheel and a power liftgate are SL highlights. From there the sky’s the limit where the SL Premium, Platinum and Platinum Premium trim levels are concerned. Depending the depth of your pockets, you can add an up-level sound system, “Around View” camera (projects a 360-degree compilation image from overhead vantage onto the touch-screen), panorama moon-

announced for the first round of competition – not even the chefs know what is in store for them. Chef competitions begins Feb 16. In head-to-head elimination rounds, the local top chefs will put their culinary creativity to the test in the soup kitchen at the Salvation Army in Cranbrook, each preparing a daily soup using only the donated ingredients on hand. They will serve lunch to Salvation Army clients, who will vote on their favourite soup. The winner will move on to the next round while their culinary opponent is eliminated from the challenge. The two chef finalists will face-off at an exciting luncheon fundraiser on Wednesday, March 2, noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort. Proceeds support the Cranbrook and District Community Foundation (CDCF) general endowment fund, which provides annual grants to nonprofit organizations in the community, as well as the Salvation Army in their efforts to build a 24/7 shelter in Cranbrook for homeless men, women, and families throughout the East Kootenay. The press conference is free and open to the public. Everyone is invited to come down and show support for the talented chefs in our region and the homeless shelter project. Light snacks and refreshments will be offered. Kootenay Granite is at 2373 Cranbrook St. N.

Keeping your family safe As electricians we enter residential properties on a regular basis, be it for an emergency or to complete a job. What you should know is that we notice everything electrical while we are there. Sorry, it’s in our nature, we can’t help it, but we can certainly give some advice! Here are some of the things you, as home owner, can do to keep your family safe and your investment protected: Winter means that our heating systems are running full time. At least once a month, check your furnace filters and either clean or replace them. The GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets in your home should be tested monthly. You will find these outlets in parts of your home where electrical current might come in contact with water, like bath-

rooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and outdoors. To test it, push the reset button to prepare for testing. Plug something like a nightlight into it – the light should come on. Now push the test button – this should turn the light off. If you push the reset button again, the light should turn back on. Testing GCFI Outlets is important since they protect you and your family from electrical shock. Another thing to consider is if your heating equipment is older than 20 years, you should upgrade it. New equipment is much more efficient - both your home and budget will thank you. Also install a programmable thermostat if you do not have one already. Cranbrook Hub for Refugees is hosting a fundraising event
“Help us Help Them Have a New Beginning!” That’s the theme of what’s hoped to be a big fundraiser dinner and dance at the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort on Saturday, January 30, with profits going to the Cranbrook Hub for Refugees (CHR), to help them sponsor a refugee fam-

The family-style event in the Prestige Grand Ballroom features a three-course dinner, live musical entertainment and a silent auction in aid of CHR’s efforts to have a refugee family from Syria or elsewhere arriving in the Key City by spring. The volunteer group has raised more than
$20,000 so far, but needs at least another $20,000 to bring the family to Cranbrook and support them here for at least a year. “We’re off to a good start but more money is needed to make this humanitarian project a success,” says CHR Co-chair Bonnie Spence-Vinge. The fun starts at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $35 each, which includes everything except drinks and children under 10 are admitted free. Tickets are available at Snapd East Kootenay Tix (online), Lotus Books and

Nutrition for mood and sleep
Mary Hinz, MD is a renowned clinician specializing in the role of neurotransmitters and health. He is one of the patent holders for Celexa (a serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressant) and at one time was the leading prescriber of the drug on the planet. Over time, as new research became available, he (and many other practitioners for that matter) came to believe that antidepressants (including the one he helped create) were having a limited benefit for his patients and he now works exclusively with the nutritional management of neurotransmitters to help people with a variety of health concerns including depression, insomnia, SAD, chronic pain, ADD, anxiety and many other. His message is that “drugs that effect neurotransmitters do not work if there is not enough neurotransmitters to work with.” This position has now been verified by research on both dopamine and serotonin. There are three ways in which neurotransmitter levels drop, resulting in a variety of mood and physical illnesses. Inadequate nutritional intake of amino acids is the number one cause. Amino acids like L-dopa, tyrosine and tryptophan are the precursors to the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine, the two most
important neurotransmitters for mood and physical health. Consuming too little of these amino acids leads to a gradual decline in the neurotransmitter levels and eventually causes a variety of diseases. A collapse of the glutathione antioxidant system is the second way neurotransmitter depletion occurs. Glutathione is the most potent antioxidant in the body and some individuals make too little glutathione which results in the depletion of serotonin and dopamine. Lastly, SSRI drugs (and others) actually deplete the very neurotransmitter levels they are effecting. As drugs like celexa move serotonin to areas in the brain the drug actually depletes the overall level of serotonin. Over time as serotonin (and dopamine) levels decline the patient needs more and more medication to feel well. Eventually the drug stops working and a new drug is tried. This pattern is all too common for many of have tried antidepressant medication. In order to treat the cause, the underlying deficiency needs of the body must be met. This means supplementing with specific levels of either L-dopa or tryptophan while simultaneously supporting glutathione levels. In doing so, one can actually address the underlying cause of the problem.
