Pure Food Marine Algae-3
Brad King's
FOR SUSTAINABLE, FISH-FREE OMEGAS
It's vegan. It's 100% fish-free. It's a sustainable plant source of omega-3s. Whole Earth & Sea Pure Food Marine Algae-3 Vegan Omega-3 is extracted from specially selected microalgae with no fishy smell or aftertaste, an excellent vegan alternative to fish oil. Marine Algae-3 is actually closer to the source of healthy omega-3s than fish. After all, the long-chain fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) found in fish oil come from the algae the fish consume! Other plant sources of omega-3s, such as flax and hemp, provide ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), a short-chain omega-3, but the body can only partially convert ALA into these important fatty acids. Marine Algae-3 provides highly concentrated, preformed EPA and DHA, bypassing the need for conversion. Increasing intake of EPA and DHA can help: • Promote cardiovascular health • Support cognitive health and brain function

More than 60 different health conditions have been shown in research around the world to be positively influenced by higher intakes of EPA and DHA. Research has focused on cardiovascular health, as well as the importance of these omegas for cognitive health and infant development
MOST MEN OVER THE AGE OF 30 ARE probably starting to notice the effects of lower testosterone production, which often leads to a diminished sex drive with infrequent and weaker erections. The ingredients within the Ultimate Libido™ formula work in a synergistic manner to help enhance the body’s natural testosterone production that does not negatively interfere with testosterone producing cells and therefore won’t cause a reduction in future testosterone levels.

Norway is home to rich herring fishing grounds, one of the main sources of food for the Norwegian people. Herring oil derived from the roe of Norwegian spring-spawning herring is rich in the essential omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, as well as choline. Choline is important for healthy liver function and cognitive performance, and is a precursor for the powerful brain chemical acetylcholine, which helps us process information faster and improves memory. Herring oil also contains natural astaxanthin, a member of the carotenoid family, and is one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants. Clinical studies have demonstrated that astaxanthin supports cardiovascular and immune health, as well as protects the skin from premature aging and other health risks associated with exposure to the sun’s UV rays. This oil is sourced in an environmentally friendly, sustainable manner. The Marine Stewardship Council whose mission is to conserve the marine habitat certified the Norwegian springspawning herring fishery. Herring roe oil is richer in DHA and EPA phospholipids than krill oil. And, omega-3s in phospholipid form are more easily absorbed. The softgels are small and easy to swallow and the product has no fish repeat.
HOLY BASIL HAS BEEN LONG EMPLOYED BY INDIA’S Ayurvedic masters to support a positive stress response and healthy mood and spirit. The full spectrum of beneficial compounds found in Holy Basil Force™ is delivered using a supercritical extraction, wholefood approach to herbal supplementation. Researchers have determined that it's “active” molecules also promote a healthy inflammation response.

to super charge the foods I eat for the most health benefit, and when it also means that my food tastes better, bonus! It's February and cinnamon is the spice of the month, well known as the flavour of those cinnamon heart candies many of us remember from the Valentines Days of our childhood. (Side note – I am not endorsing those candies, nor do I assume that they actually contain real cinnamon!)

GLUTEN-FREE TASTINGS
Research and tradition from different parts of the world have demonstrated numerous beneficial health effects of this warming and stimulating herb from antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, to it's anti-infective qualities. Here, I will focus on three aspects of cinnamon that I find particularly interesting.

2. Anti-infection properties
Cinnamon shows promise for helping to fight infections. A systematic review showed many studies indicating the antimicrobial activity of cinnamon on a variety of bacteria, fungi and viruses. With the worry of antibiotic resistance on the rise, the more agents that we know can help kill unwanted bugs, the better. Of course, the form that the cinnamon extract is in will dictate the strength of action against unwanted bugs, many of these studies were on the essential oil which would not be safe for human consumption. However, an alcohol extract (called a tincture, used by herbal practitioners) or even a water extract (tea!) might also prove useful in certain circumstances. Cinnamon's astringent nature also adds to its potential use for diarrhea.
3. Women’s Health/ Painful Menstruation
Dragons' Blend
Organic Love Crunch
Several small research studies have focused on the potential effects of cinnamon to help regulate blood sugar in type two diabetes and in “pre diabetes” (those who are approaching a diabetes diagnosis). Taking capsules of cinnamon has been shown to help decrease fasting blood sugar and HbA1c (this is a measure of blood sugar over a longer period of time). There is also indication that cinnamon may positively affect cholesterol.
This cinnamon study result piqued my interest. The 2015 study looked at using cinnamon capsules to help with menstrual pain, nausea and excess bleeding in women between the ages of 18 and 30. Severity and duration of menstrual pain as well as nausea and vomiting was less in the women who took cinnamon capsules (compared to placebo). The amount of menstrual bleeding was also less. This makes sense to me as I often add a small amount of cinnamon to formulas for women who have very heavy periods as I know it to be herbal “styptic” (an herb that can slow bleeding).
Safety Adding good quality cinnamon to your food or as a tea may do more than just enhance the flavour of your food, there may also be a gentle support to your health. Never ingest essential oil of cinnamon and if you are considering preparations of the spice stronger then that found in food, you should speak with a qualified health practitioner. Additionally, I would always seek support if you are taking medications or if you have a specific health concern (diabetes etc), cinnamon should not be used medicinally in pregnancy. There are many different types of cinnamon, the research that I have looked at suggests that the species Cinnamomum zeylanicum may be safer due to its low levels of a chemical called coumarin. DR. o one likes change. However, many of those voices heard screaming “Don’t change the Empress,” probably haven’t stepped foot in it for years. LAURA LAVIN When the news broke that the iconic Bengal @mondaymag Lounge in the Empress Hotel would close in April, it took no time for social media to burn with fury over the apparent loss of heritage. Last year, residents were upset when the weeping sequoia trees that framed the entrance of the hotel were taken down and ivy that had been growing on the face of the 108 year old hotel was removed. But the reaction to the closure of the Bengal was visceral, including an online petition that begged readers not to allow the “historic landmark to sink to corporate greed.” The $30-million renovations at the Empress began last year, inside, with some 250 rooms. They continue with upgrades to the dining room to include a new restaurant with a large bar and patio. Yes, the loss of the Bengal Lounge is sad, but is it “corporate greed”? New owners Nate and Flora Bosa of Vancouver are the first BC residents to own the hotel in its history and have been quoted as calling the project “hobby-philanthropy” and a labour of love for the Victoria icon. Like many Victoria residents, I will miss the unique surroundings of the Bengal Lounge but to accuse the owners of greed and destroying heritage is an unfair assessment. Just because something looks beautiful on the outside, doesn’t mean it’s healthy and viable on the inside – just ask the hundreds of mice that were living in the ivy. David Bowie fans around the world were shocked by the entertainer’s death Jan. 10. While tributes poured in from around the world for Bowie, it was the man himself who gave his fans what he knew they would need – Bowie’s 28th album ★ (Blackstar) entered the charts at #1 in more than 20 countries including Canada since its release Jan. 8. Also, according to Newsweek, the performer left a long list of unscheduled musical releases he planned before he died, assuring his place in the future David Bowie of the ever-changing music scene.

Tripping into romance
Jenna & Tristan Photography
S
ince February is the month of love, I would like to talk about my wife. I met the woman who would become my wife in 2009. We both worked part time in go-nowhere jobs and hit it off. We had the worst first date in the world. I was over an hour late because of a rehearsal, I was so dehydrated I had a migraine, we saw the oh-so-romantic film Inglourious Basterds, a bottle of rootbeer exploded all over me, and then I decided that it would be nice to go for a romantic ocean-side walk at this old military barrack just outside of downtown. Turns out that at night, trenches, old concrete gun turrets, caged off barracks and total darkness doesn’t scream romance, so much as just screams. For some reason she said yes to a second date. (To be fair,
I am very handsome, funny, charming and most importantly … humble.) Over the years, before we walked down the aisle together, she helped change me. She helped me figure out who I am and help me to be more honest and far more appropriate at family functions. My wife is a nurse. Through our time together she has gone through all of her intense schooling, endless practicums (where they do real work for no money) and is now a full time nurse. There is a lot she can’t tell me about her work. Privacy means that I only get a glimpse of what her days and nights are like. I know that there is a lot of good and a lot of bad. I know that if you buy nurses Lacey’s cookies from Costco, they will be your friend forever. I also know that my wife could stab me, and then not let me die. How do I know this? Sometimes she whispers it to me when I forget to do the dishes. I know that she is extremely happy when she gets to watch a new life come into this world, and I know that when she has to watch a life leave this world,
she slips away, has a cry, and then goes back to work. When she is not helping total strangers back to health, my wife has helped me write and create some of my most popular jokes. My favorite joke to tell is the story of me falling off a treadmill, and while it is a fun story to tell, the truth is that it didn’t happen to me, it happened to my wife. We tweaked, added and made changes to it until it was finished, and now it’s my most popular closer. So what does this say about her? That even as a part time comedy writer, she is still far better and funnier than I am! They used to use that saying: “Behind every great man is a great woman.“ I am about as far from great as you can get. And there is no woman behind me. The woman beside me, however, is the loveliest woman I know. She is strong, she is smart and she is funnier than I will ever be. She is by far my better half. So to her, and all of the other folks with a special somebody I say … Happy Valentine’s.

MISERY loves comedy C
omic Jeremy Hotz allows his anxiety to work for him. Which is convenient because otherwise, he says, he wouldn’t work at all. “I was pretty aimless as a teenager, I didn’t want to ‘do’, you know? And that hasn’t left. A perfect day for me is when I just wake up and stand there and I don’t have to do anything. That’s a great day,” he says. “If comedy hadn’t worked out for me, what would I be doing? I would be … umm … homeless. I would be a homeless man,” he deadpans. “But I would be the funniest fucking homeless guy you ever met.” Hotz grew up in Ottawa and has appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, was a staff writer for the now defunct Jon Stewart Show and appeared in the feature films My Favorite Martian with Elizabeth Hurley and Speed 2 with Sandra Bullock. He says he was kicked out of school as a kid and didn’t really gain acceptance until high school. “They sent me to see a psychologist when I was about eight because they thought something was wrong with me and his brilliant diagnosis was, ‘he’s eating too much catsup.’ It’s ridiculous at that level. That guy was just scamming people.” Win tickets to Once out of school, Hotz got his first acting gig as a see Jeremy Hotz teenager. mondaymag.com “I was the jester at one of those (Medieval feasts) and I had to read a poem and these old women – because I had to wear tights – these old women, when I walked by, would pinch my ass. It was completely demeaning. No lawsuits, no nothing. They were allowed to do that back then,” he says. “It’s one of the few jobs I had because, I guess people just don’t like the look on my face.” The 52-year-old who lives in California with his pet bird, Monkeybird, claims to be unemployable. “I’ve never had a day job, never, no, no. No one would want me, what would I be gainfully employed as during the day? A waiter? I don’t think so. You want some soup? Get it yourself.” His quick wit is natural, has earned him Gemini and Canadian Comedy Awards and is what he relies on when he’s up on stage. “I keep a loose base of notes and I create stuff,” he says. “Mostly on stage, right there in front of your face and if it works I keep doing it. Once in a while I sort of jam out ideas. I’m not the kind of guy that gets up every single day and sits there and writes something – I can’t do it. I did that in school, I’m not doing that now, forget it.” He eschews sitcom work and says he’s finished writing for other comedians. “I hate writing. I’m a performer first, I’m a writer second, I can’t stand it. It’s a job and I hate it.” His all-new show, Jeremy Hotz International Man of Misery, is his fourth Hatha Flow Kundalini Ashtanga Prenatal major Canadian tour and he’s included Victoria each Nidra time. “I Restorative love Victoria. The McPherson Theatre; am I wrong? It’s a great venue and I love playing it and I have a huge (fan) base there. It’s really great, I love Victoria.” As a performer, Hotz’ frequently turns his back on the audience, covers his face with his hands and focuses on life’s sour moments, but he says, he’s not really miserable. “I’m a man who is profoundly disappointed. I should get some t-shirts made up. If I had the courage and belief they would sell, I would do that. But I don’t. “Everything I say is hilarious. I do everything completely wrong. I put my back to the audience, I put my hand in front of my face and somehow when you do everything wrong – it’s right. “I’m complaining, but that’s ‘cuz it’s my job.”

wat’s up?
What comes out of the wash When April’s parents first taught her how to do laundry, she never expected she’d end-up talking about it on TV. She probably didn’t think the chore could be so relaxing either. But here we are in the Sparkle Bright Laundrette, doing an interview for the end of the six o’clock news, about the soothing sounds of the washers and dryers. “There’s a Zen thing going on,” she says. “There’s the perfect balance of things.” Especially when you combine the hum of a Maytag mantra with the buzz of coffee from next-door’s Caffé Fantastico. Perhaps it was in the meditative state between rinse cycle and tumble dry, that April noticed how many things were left behind. “And not just little things – sleeping bags, blankets, beautiful clothing.” The management at the iconic Quadra Village business confirms it – two to three full loads of laundry are left behind every week. It all ends up in a black bin in the corner before being donated to charity. April was inspired by all the colours and textures she found in there and began re-purposing what couldn’t be re-used. The professional illustrator started cutting, stitching and gluing. “I swear this hand was a third bigger than this one because
of all the ADAM SAWATSKY cutting I was doing,” @CTVNewsAdam she joked. When she was done, forgotten laundry was transformed into original art. She describes one of the fabric collages hanging on the Laundrette’s walls as, “a takeoff on the beautiful art you might see at a Buddhist temple.” It features rainbow socks, soap that promises to clean your soul, and a figure in the centre wearing quarters for earrings. April says she hopes her unconventional art will inspire others to make the most of the mundane. “Maybe there’s something in (their) own life that (they) could make into something extraordinary.” As the videographer captures footage of a mandala that April’s made from socks, I ask if – after all the time she’s spent with lost laundry – she ever found the elusive match for that inevitable single sock. April takes her final sip of coffee and answers: “Third ring of Saturn. It’s full of lost socks. That’s the truth!” Adam Sawatsky is an anchor and reporter at CTV News Vancouver Island. On weekends, he hosts ‘Eye on the Arts’ on CFAX 1070.

Playwright Joan MacLeod journeys into LAURA LAVIN editor@mondaymag.com
J
oan MacLeod has no fear when it comes to peeling back the layers of society’s most difficult issues. Her plays include Little Sister, a portrayal of teenage eating disorders; Amigo’s Blue Guitar, the story of a 19-year-old Salvadoran refugee; and The Shape of a Girl, loosely based on the tragic bullying and murder of Victoria teen Reena Virk. In MacLeod’s latest play, The Valley, she tackles the complex and volatile relationship between the police and people with mental health issues. “(Policing) is a very different job than it was when I was young,” the UVic professor says. “I was interested in how my feeling about policing changed throughout my life. I was anti-cop growing up as a kid of the 60s, but once I had a family, became a property owner I wanted protection. I found it all very interesting to look at.” Originally from North Vancouver, The Valley MacLeod, a University of Victoria Belfry Theatre graduate, has been teaching in Feb. 2 to 28 UVic’s writing department for the past 12 years and takes inspiration belfry.bc.ca
from young people. “I’ve always loved teenage voices,” she says. “They have a long history in literature, certainly in novels, coming of age stories. I’ve always been drawn to those kind of stories. I love the voices, it’s what drew me to writing and writing for the stage. It’s an interesting time dramatically, it’s an interesting age for characters. They are waking up to a world where their feelings are big, their language is big,” she says. In The Valley, a dramatic police encounter at a Vancouver SkyTrain station binds four people togethJoan MacLeod er - Connor, an aspiring novelist who has just dropped out of university; his mother Sharon, who is dealing with his erratic behaviour; Dan, a new father and Vancouver police officer; and Janie, his wife, who is struggling with the demands of motherhood. “It’s a one act play with all four characters talking about their first experience with police,” says MacLeod. “I had a friend busted for switching price tags at 15, I didn’t do it but I didn’t realize it was breaking the law. She got hauled off in a police car
The Valley
and it was terrifying to me.” Work-shopping the play in 2013, she had expert advice from a Calgary police officer, a good friend who is a psychiatric nurse and attended panels on justice and mental health issues to make sure The Valley’s interactions are authentic. MacLeod also read Andrew Solomon’s The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression. “It’s incredible. It’s very well-written and talks about depression as its own different culture.” MacLeod, who is currently on sabbatical from UVic while writing her 11th play, says she is very interested in contemporary issues. “My work is often inspired by stories that might be headline news that I look at through a smaller lens, the lens of family. That’s something the theatre can do really well, it’s a great medium to show another side of the issues rather than what you see on the news on TV.” Talkback Thursday for The Valley is Feb. 11. After the curtain call, some of the actors return to the stage to answer your questions and offer insight into the play.

struggling actor and a rookie set designer would (Victoria) | 2 50-595-62seem 57 an unlikely match. But don’t tell that to k Bay (Victoria) | 250-595-6257 Morris Panych and Ken MacDonald, who met at the Belfry Theatre more than 30 years ago and have collaborated on close to 100 shows together since. The married duo makes a formidable team with Panych now an esteemed director and writer and MacDonald designing sets. After 30 years of teamwork, neither of them have any intention of slowing down any time soon. Everyone knows there are risks 1964 that come with mixing personal and professional lives but Panych and MacDonald have managed to find the perfect balance. “Our jobs are so different; I’m creating the space for him to put his play on,” MacDonald says, adding things can get tense between him and Panych but not very often. “He knows all my tricks so he can call me out when I’m being lazy,” he says. For Panych, the separation of work life and home life is something he thinks about regularly. “Suddenly, I’m in a position where it’s up to me to say yes or no,” The Barber Panych says. “At home, it’s an equal of Seville partnership but at Feb 11 to 21 work, there’s a natpov.bc.ca ural hierarchy.”
The two are currently working on their rendition of Pierre Beaumarchais’ The Barber of Seville, a comedic opera, which they bring to Victoria’s Royal Theatre Feb. 11 to 21. Despite any personal disagreements throughout the creative process along the way, both agree the final product fills them with pride. “Especially when it’s an original piece that Morris writes,” MacDonald says. “We can step back and say, ‘we did that.’ I’m proud of him and he’s proud of me,” – a sentiment that Panych echoes. “When we walk in and see Ken’s set under light and all the elements come together, that’s the most satisfying moment,” says Panych. The duo moved from Vancouver to Toronto to take advantage of the theatre community and festival scene. Both are looking forward to returning to the West Coast for their February production. “We’ve spent so much time in Vancouver that it feels more like home and Victoria is a part of that,” Panych says. MacDonald has been experimenting with all-white Spanish-style architecture for the Barber of Seville set and Panych is working on exploring the darker aspects of the comedy for this rendition. “It’s an old-fashioned theatre with a nice space and I’m hoping it will look beautiful,” MacDonald says.

Falafel dish at Part and Parcel.
A Valentine’s Day that takes the cake
F
ebruary is for love. Or snow, or Mexico, or longing for summer berries – whichever you prefer. I’m one of those people now, declaring my love and staring blissfully (most of the time) across the table at him. But once I threw an anti-Valentine party, guests had to bring chocolate, or red food, or booze. We were single, 20-something and had a good laugh. Now in my ripe old mid-30s, and madly in love, that old party sounds like a great menu challenge. So skip it (we pretty much do), or go all out, there’s plenty of options for the 14th. If you’re staying in, use a local cookbook and make a new dish. Try The Deerholme Vegetable Cookbook by Bill Jones or The Dirty Apron Cookbook by David Robertson. If you’re heading out, The Bengal Lounge at The Empress Hotel closes April 30 for a massive renovation at the hotel. Grab a cocktail and toast the end of an era. I recently went to Bodega for the first time, a tapas and wine
bar at 1210 Broad, little sister to Tapa Bar in Trounce Alley. Go for happy hour and try almost any of their extensive sherry offerings for $5, get a pincho (bite sized taster) too. Part and Parcel at 2656 Quadra has a rotating menu in a small room that’s bright, cozy and seemingly filled with local chefs. An emphasis on whole beast means you’ll find dishes like duck neck ragu, and they do have a great selection of fresh salads and vegetarian dishes too. I had the falafel dish and a side of Moroccan fries, both were great. The falafel was served on a beautiful ceramic plate made by an employee and local ceramic artist Amanda Marie. Her pieces are available online and at a few retailers around town. If you’re looking for sweets, Ruth & Dean at 1310 Douglas have gorgeous cakes and pies to order, or stop in late in the week to get cake by the slice. The three tier Earl Grey lavender buttercream was divine. Pure Vanilla Bakery has a great selection of cakes and cook-
ies, Fry’s Bread has wood oven baked pastries, and Sirene Artisan Chocolate Makers are a local bean to bar company who sell their bars online, in cafés, and at specialty retailers. Embracing Valentine’s Day or shunning it by eating the cake by yourself, send me a tweet and tell me if you found a new favourite. Try it, you’ll like it: • Oatmeal Spice stuffed cookie at Ruth & Dean, $3.15 • Liquidity Wines, a great winery in Okanagan falls, White Blend, available at Spinnakers Spirit Merchants. This Chardonnay, Viognier and Pinot Gris blend does well with food (I loved it in and with a gravy I made with sage, rosemary, and garlic with wine, chicken stock and cream, over pork tenderloin), or alone. About $22. • Blood oranges. I’ve turned them into a cake, an ice cream, juice for adding to sparkling water or cocktails. Beautifully fragrant and brilliant in colour.
Downtown’s delicious dine around starts feb. 19 Victoria’s most anticipated dining event, Dine Around & Stay in Town, takes place Feb. 19 to March 6. Tickle your tastebuds and dive into Victoria’s culinary scene at more

Wheelies is hidden away on Rock Bay Avenue and has managed to establish a unique pairing of motorcycle shop and restaurant with a slogan boasting, “Fine vintage custom motorcycles with gourmet sandwiches and ice cold beer.” They recently opened for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights, but it was their cocktails, of course, that brought me to their door. The addition of dinner comes in the form of two items added to the lunch menu and on this night chicken wings and a shepherd’s pie were on offer. At an hour more appropriate to cocktails than dinner I visited this out of the way venue looking for libations and something shareable. I am not exaggerating when I say Wheelies offers a limited menu, there are only four cocktails, a Bourbon Sour, Rumbler (spiced rum and Phillips Orange Cream Soda), a Chipotle Caesar and a more dessert style drink with Baileys. Ordering the Sour and the Rumbler were good choices and reminded me of quality over quantity. The Sour was refreshing and the hint of maple played well against the lime. Both drinks came in jam jars so they were small and unfortunately, this worked against ordering the Rumbler as a double. There was not enough Phillips soda to balance out the spiced rum but I think a single would be a perfect mix of flavours. Wheelies’ owners, continuing their unique pairing of retail and food, have recently collaborated on the Saint Frank venture that combines restaurant, bar, arcade and barbering. It’s akin to starting up mini malls – get more things done in one trip. How environmentally friendly!

Film Festival brings the world
into focus E
Kyle Wells @CineFileBlog
ntering its 22nd year as the cultural highlight for area cinephiles, the 2016 Victoria Film Festival is set to unleash the best in local, national and international cinema onto our downtown silver screens starting Feb 5. This year’s festival kicks off with the opening gala film My Internship in Canada, from Quebecois director Philippe Falardeau. Falardeau is best known for his 2011 film Monsieur Lazhar, which was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film for that year’s Academy Awards. This time Falardeau is back with a comedy about a Haitian intern (Irdens Extanus) learning the ropes of Canadian politics. Among the local films on the schedule is Victoria director Connor Gaston’s debut feature-length film The Devout, enjoying its hometown premiere at the Victoria Film Festival. The Devout played at last year’s Vancouver International Film Festival to great acclaim and earned Gaston the title Best Emerging BC Director to boot. Showing a patience for storytelling ahead of his years, Gaston’s somber but beautiful drama tackles heady topics of faith and grief, but at its core is a touching tale of family. It’s not to be missed. Documentarian Patricia Sims, also based out of Victoria, will be premiering her latest to a home crowd as When Elephants Were Young screens
on Wednesday, Feb 10. Narrated by William Shatner, the film explores the lives of elephants in Thailand and their relationship with their human owners, tackling questions of the domestication of wild animals and the sustainability of elephant populations in Asia. There’s local talent to be found among the short programs too, including No Breath Play from Victoria-based director Stacey Ashworth, a tale of BDSM gone wrong. Jeremy Lutter is another well-known figure in the local scene and his latest short, Reset, about a female android falling in love with her owner, is also among the offerings. Rounding out the festival is an impressive slate of narrative, documentary and short films of all stripes from around the world. Highlights include The Lobster, an Ireland/UK/France co-production from director Yorgos Lanthimus (Dogtooth) that’s getting some early critical buzz and BC filmmaker Patricia Rozema’s intense survival film Into the Forest, starring Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood. With more than 150 films from 30 countries to pick from, and a host of special programs focusing on Asian, French-Canadian, indigenous and other filmmakers, there’s something for everyone at the Festival. The 2016 Victoria Film Festival runs until Feb. 14. Follow @CineFileBlog and @Monda yMag on Twitter for ongoing coverage of the festival as it unfolds. victoriafilmfestival.com

T
oday, perfume has become a billion dollar industry with every celebrity and fashion house releasing a new fragrance every season along with the latest fashion trends. There is a great mystery behind perfume because the majority of people don’t know how it’s made or the difference between synthetic and natural perfumes. Synthetic perfumes contain notes that can’t be extracted from nature, which creates longer staying power – but which could be at the expense of your health. As a way to protect trade secrets, companies are permitted by the FDA to withhold fragrance ingredients, which means the consumer is left not knowing what they are actually spraying on their body. The most common ingredients for concern in synthetic fragrances are parabens, phthalates and synthetic musks which are all known carcinogens and hormone disrupters. Consumers like myself are starting to become more educated and suspicious of the chemicals in mass-marketed personal care products and have started to seek out safer and healthier alternatives. My passion for perfume came as a second nature alongside my love for fashion as they go hand-in-hand. I never used to pay attention to the ingredients in personal care products and perfume until my skin became irritated by the common ingredients found in synthetic perfumes and beauty products. This started my interested in natural skin care and fragrance and my quest for a natural perfume. I searched high and low for the perfect natural perfume that matched my own physical chemistry but kept falling short. I decided to take matters into my own hands and contacted Karen Van Dyck, a master natural perfumer, to aid me in the creation of my own signature scent. Karen is a professional herbalist, green cosmetic formulator and natural perfumer who has been trained by the renowned perfumer Mandy Aftel in Berkley, CA. She guided me through the creation of my own fragrance through her in-house blending bar. As a result, I created a fragrance called Parisian Bouquet that can be found at Migration Boutique located atoptical The Bay Centre With over 50 years in the business as in Victoria or online owner and operator of Diamond Optical at my fashion and lifestyle blog laurajaneatelier.com “Downtown onin Douglas” For those of you who are interested creating your own fragrance, Karen Ron an Boyce is having a 3 month+blending bar session or guides her clients through hour long, in-house 23RD ANNIVERSARY offers a full custom perfume experience where the client experiences hundreds of exotic essences from around the world, find her at naturesfirstbeautybar.com. H
ave you ever been in a room that doesn’t quite seemed finished? It may be the trim work details aren’t complete or are just outdated. When designers are looking for a polished look to finish a room, the trim package is the vital icing on the cake. These necessary embellishments have to be thought out carefully, because one can overdo it, and cause that icing to be way too thick, sticky, and too sweet to swallow! Typically we break down a trim package to the window and door casings, including the header above the window, the baseboards, the crown moulding, and perhaps a chair rail of panel wainscoting. The architecture of the house always dictates how simple or complicated the moulding (Above) mouldings from the Finishing Store. design needs to be. The trend over the last few (Inset) millwork by years has been wider window and door casMichael Abrams Design. ings (2.5” to 3.5”) that are flat and very clean. Baseboards are also flat but can be angled at the top to prevent dust collecting (4.5” to 6”). The crown moulding is super important for completing the look and can be anywhere from (4 ½”-6”). I love going into The Finishing Store at 780 Topaz, they have it all. There is every possible style of moulding available and if they don’t have it, they can order it or even manufacture it for you. It can be slightly overwhelming, but the staff is incredibly knowledgeable and experienced. Another great source, is Slegg Building Materials with 13 locations on the island. They carry the most popular styles and can also order in anything more custom. Slegg’s is a lumber store where you can find all your reno supplies in one stop, making it very handy. They also deliver. Remember, less is often more. Beautiful trim work doesn’t have to be too sweet to swallow! Sheri Peterson has been an interior designer for 22 years in Victoria. little over three years ago there was a devastating attack by Islamist extremists that began at a U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya. The death toll included a much-loved ambassador and the Republicans quickly politicized the disaster; there’s still an ongoing and controversial attempt to smear Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and derail her run at the presidency. But what has been little known, up till now, are many details on what happened that long and terrifying night. Enter director Michael Bay, whose 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi is an intense, deliberately jagged reenactment of how a mere six “security personnel” – ex-Marines and ex-Navy Seals who were bodyguards at a not-so-secret CIA base – fought off as many as 200 heavily armed thugs intent on annihilating American personnel during an allnight siege.

Christian Black photo
The film itself has engendered its own controversy with its depiction of the head of the CIA base that was located a mile from the diplomatic compound. Portrayed as an officious, patronizing bully, he supposedly initially refused to let the six elite soldiers mount a rescue when the imperiled ambassador called for help. If there was a delay, it likely cost him his life. What’s not in question is that these six warriors – all family men – were selflessly volunteering for something akin to a suicide mission. And after a belated – and futile – effort at the compound, the men dodge bullets all the way back to the CIA base, well aware that something hellish is chasing at their heels. The men’s heroism, as well as their extraordinary lethality, were clearly irresistible to Bay, the maestro of blowed-up-real-good, who delivers an epic night of slaughter that’s a bit like Black Hawk Down rendered as a first-person-shooter video game. Bay uses a mixture of deliberate chaos and fast edits combined with flowing camera work to draw the viewer into the experience of a hellzapoppin’ firefight where it’s all chaos and carnage, testosterone and adrenaline. Coming from a director best known for his slick and soulless Transformers series, the result is gritty and surprisingly gripping. Some critics have dismissed 13 Hours as patriotism porn. But notwithstand-

Independent Films February. When, thoughts turn to love and what better love than film? February brings the Victoria Film Festival and the return of a selection of indie-style movies nominated for Academy Awards that you shouldn’t miss, including Carol, Trumbo, Joy, and Brooklyn. Alongside those there’s a world selection of international and Canadian films at the VFF. This year one of the events goes wild with the indie spirit, and that means forging a new path or looking at a story from a unique angle. At ConVerge, one can experience films viscerally in the form of a treasure hunt for short films that are placed in crazy spaces that reflect their themes. Expect to watch films in an LA Limousine, a clock tower and even in a specially built doghouse. Bring your indie spirit it’s de rigueur! At Cinecenta: Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict, Lisa Vreeland’s KATHY KAY doc that reveals a compelling view of a woman who loved and @VicFilmFestival dominated the modern art world.

This month two things are important: The first is friendship. You might realize how important an existing friendship is. Or perhaps you will mend a broken friendship or deepen an existing one. Possibly, your association with a group will be clearer. And of course, some of you will make new friends. The second thing that will be important is that this is the best month of the year for you to make goals. Because your idealism is aroused, you will ask yourself what it is you want your life to really be. Dare to be specific!

Relations with partners and close friends are warm now. Do new things, meet new people and learn new ideas so you can expand your world!
Cancer (June 21-July 22)
You will be more passionate and intense about everything this month. Yes, you will be sexually passionate. However, at a more subtle level, you will be just as passionate about discussions regarding shared property, jointly-owned wealth, taxes, debt, inheritances and insurance disputes. You will also feel playful, prankish and flirtatious this month! Many of you will go out of your way to party, enjoy the arts, see or participate in sports events and have fun with playful activities with children. Enjoy fun times while you can!

This is the only time all year when the Sun, opposite your sign for the next four weeks, robs you of some of your energy because the Sun represents energy. In a word – this means you will need more sleep and more rest. No biggie. In addition, this polarized position of the Sun will prompt you to focus on your intimate one-to-one encounters with others. This is an excellent time to study these relationships to see how well they do or do not fill your needs. It’s not a time to go it alone. Au contraire! Others can help you
in the coming month.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
Down deep, you wish you could be organized. You wish you would exercise regularly and eat healthy. Naturally, these wishes do not guarantee anything – but they do show your intent. This month, you have a chance of achieving your wishes because you will want to become more organized, more productive and more effective in everything you do. This might be expressed through your job or anything that you choose to embrace. For example, many of you will be redecorating at home; while others will throw energy into writing, teaching, selling, marketing and acting.
Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
Lucky you! This month is one of the most playful times of the year for you! Basically, you want to be free to express yourself and do what you want. And one of the things that you want is a fun time! That’s why you will feel lighter, more carefree, and interested in the arts, sports events, parties and fun diversions. You might have a stronger focus on children, as well. Fortunately, fair Venus will sweeten your words so that you are diplomatic and charming with everyone. In fact, you can make money from your words!
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)
Home, family and your private life are your focus this month. Basically, you want to enjoy familiar surroundings, and cocoon at home so that you can relax and contemplate the coming year. This is certainly going to be a powerful year for you, and a very popular one. Therefore, it would be wise to think about how you will handle this increased power and popularity. Ideally, not only you should benefit, but others as well. Then you have a win/win situation, which is always the best because what goes around, comes around.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
This month you hit the pavement running because it ushers in a time of fast-paced activity and accelerated energy. Short trips, errands, and increased opportunities to relate to others (especially siblings and neighbours) will create a jam-packed schedule
for you. Midst all this activity, do take time out to buy some wardrobe treasures because you couldn’t pick a better month to do so. And it’s necessary to look great because this is the year where you will promote your reputation in the eyes of others. It’s all coming together now.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
‘Show me the money!’ This month your focus is on money, cash flow, earnings and your assets in general become an important focus for you. Basically, this is your time to survey your wealth and ask yourself how much it helps you or hinders you. Sometimes what we own becomes an albatross. Does it serve your needs or do you serve the needs of what you own? The bottom line is what you own should make your life easier not more difficult. You are a thrifty and you hate waste; but you also hate dead weight.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
Happy Birthday! This your chance to recharge your batteries for the rest of the year. Almost by magic, you will attract important people and favourable situations to you. It’s appropriate to be concerned with personal matters and your own needs. The truth is your first duty is to yourself right now. And when you think about it, if you don’t take care of yourself, how can you be of any use to anyone else? You are an idealist who wants to make the world a better place. This begins with being strong and ready to act. Invest in yourself.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) This is the perfect time to ponder what you want your new year to be. Think about your goals for 2016. This is a powerful time for Pisces because not only are your relationships a strong support and benefit to you now, this is also when you are in your time of harvest, reaping the seeds you have planted since 2008. (Some can even look back to 2003.) Powerful years don’t happen frequently; so it’s important to take advantage of them when they occur. Ya think?
