ASHLEY WADHWANI ashley.wadhwani@mrtimes.com

Members of the St. Patrick’s Catholic church in Maple Ridge will be welcoming a refugee family that is moving from Syria in mid-February. The Kaspars – two parents with two daughters and a son – “are looking forward to coming here, and are wishing their children can resume their studies sooner than later,” explained Gloria IsaacTam, coordinator of the refugee sponsorship committee. The family’s two oldest children were in university until three years ago when they had to drop out due to Syria’s unrest, she continued. Isaac-Tam has been preparing for the family’s move alongside 15 volunteers from the parish and St. Patrick’s elementary school. It doesn’t look as though the family will be moving to Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, however. “It has been extremely difficult to find housing” in the community, Isaac-Tam said. Isaac-Tam said the difficulty in housing a family within the community is two-fold: finding a landlord who will commit to renting

The committee has budgeted to financially sponsor the Kaspars for one year, to the tune of roughly $28,000, and have secured a rental unit for the family in Port Coquitlam. The committee doesn’t know the exact date

of when to expect the Kaspars, but are ready and excited for their arrival, Isaac-Tam said. Typically when working with a private sponsor such as St. Patrick’s parish, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada [IRCC] will give a 10 business day notice of the family’s arrival. But currently, the service gives 24 to 48 hours notice,

the coordinator noted.

Refugee reverend Through fundraisers, dinners, bake sales, and mass collection, the Edge Street church has raised close to $58,000, allowing sponsorship of the Kaspars and three other families that are in the works – one of which is currently undergoing their medical assessments.

Rev. Matthew To has wanted to instill “a sense of responsibility” in his parishioners, he explained, noting he came to Canada as a refugee from Vietnam. In the 1980s, To was one of the “millions from Vietnam who escaped after the communist rising,” he told The TIMES. Through the “generosity of the Canadian contingency” To, his father,

Isaac-Tam said the sharing of “gifts” has been well received by the committee, in the form of funds, household items, and furniture for the families. As well, volunteers have offered to help the families learn English. “I have received such kindness and generosity from the community,” she said. When the next family is ready to move, Isaac-Tam hopes to have a home in Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows ready for them. “It would be easier for [us] to visit and help them settle in, and show them around the community,” she continued. While the committee waits to receive notice of the Kaspars’ travel details, they will continue to look for another rental space in anticipation of the next family’s move. Anyone who might be able to assist, with rental accommodations, household donations, or volunteer aid is asked to contact Isaac-Tam at gtkamis@ telus.net.

rad dresses and tuxedos are usually worn once in a lifetime. With this in mind, buying or renting a dress and tux for what’s essentially a one-night event is a very pricey endeavour, especially for teens whose families are struggling to make ends meet. This is what makes the Putting on the Glitz program important to teens who can’t afford to dress up to celebrate their milestone achievement. The Putting on the Glitz program, run through PLEA Community Services Society in conjunction with community partners and School District 42, is for Grade 12 students from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows public secondary schools, who can’t afford to attend their graduation ceremony. Its annual Evening of Glitz event – including fittings, photography, and hair and makeup – is coming up in early March. Local Grade 12s benefiting from Evening of Glitz take their clothes, shoes, and accessories home with them, to wear for graduation festivities in June. Last year, 25 girls and roughly 15 boys benefited from the program. “They get to choose from all the dresses that we have and the men’s suits and tuxes,” explained Putting on the Glitz committee chair and founder Michelle Cherak, about Evening of Glitz. “Once they have all that done they can get their hair and makeup professionally done, as well. And once they’re all done up, then we can have free grad photos provided to the youth, as well.” All involved in Evening of Glitz donate their time and services to the night, “which is wonderful,” Cherak said. “There’s many happy tears shed at the event, from parents and kids alike,” Cherak remarked. Photographers, stylists, and seamstresses are needed for Evening of Glitz. Anyone interested in helping out during the evening can call Cherak at 604-476-2821.

Being so close to these animals can be heart-wrenching for SAINTS’ 40 weekend volunteers as well as its paid staff who work Monday to Friday. This past year, 50 animals have had to be euthanized. Help needed nursing hurt pup

TROY LANDREVILLE tlandreville@mrtimes.com

Donations are starting to pour in to help Lexus, a St. Bernard puppy recently hit by a car and badly injured. Lexus is currently on the mend at the Maple Ridge SPCA shelter. Rushed by a Good Samaritan to an emergency veterinary clinic in Abbotsford, the sixmonth-old female pup is now back in Maple Ridge, at the SPCA. No owner has come forward for Lexus, so the society is absorbing the medical costs,

Lexus, a six-month-old St. Bernard puppy badly injured after getting hit by a car, is recovering at the Maple Ridge SPCA shelter. said Maple Ridge SPCA manager Jodi Dunlop. “Lexus is such a good-natured girl – she’s absolutely adorable,” Dunlop added. “She looks at you with those eyes and your heart just melts. She’s only six months old, still just a puppy, and despite her many

injuries, she has been so lovely.” Lexus suffered broken ribs, a fractured front leg, and ligament damage to a back leg after being hit on Jan. 18. She can’t walk without help. She needs at least two surgeries to help get her started on the

road to recovery. “We just want to give her a second chance at a happy, healthy life – she’s a real darling,” Dunlop said. “She’ll likely be in foster care for two to three months recovering, and after that, she’ll be available for adoption into a loving, forever home.” As of Wednesday afternoon, $1,115 has been raised through online donations (link is spca.bc.ca/medicalemergency) which will go towards medical costs expected to exceed $8,000. To help Lexus and other SPCA animals in need, people can donate online or in person at the local shelter, 10235 Jackson Rd., in Maple Ridge.

Opposition is a tough gig

P

ity the poor federal Conservatives. After nine years in power, they’re back to the opposition benches. And like many former ruling parties after a stint in power, they are without a permanent leader, and will have to spend some time licking their wounds. The problem with transfers of power in Canadian politics is that they are usually done when the voters are heartily sick of the governing party. You can come in on a wave of change and enthusiasm, and be kicked out eight or nine years later with a hearty “Good riddance!” from the electorate. The Tories are currently licking their wounds. But the Tories – and the NDP, and the Green Party’s Elizabeth May – are going to have to pick themselves up, and soon. It’s tough to be in opposition against a new and still fairly popular governing party. But the role is vital. Conservative interim leader Rona Ambrose is making a few stabs at Liberal policy, weighing in on the Energy East pipeline and is pushing for the TPP trade deal to be ratified. She’s suggesting governments look at doing something about sky-high real estate prices. So far, it’s been a mixture of talking points left over from the campaign, and a few jabs at the Liberals’ weak spots. Whoever takes on the full time job of Tory leader will have to do that, and much more. They will have to hold the Liberals’ feet to the fire on a broad range of issues, from budget to defense to the environment to job creation. They will have to criticize from a place of principle. And they will have to articulate a vision of what a new Conservative Canada would look like – a task made more difficult (at least for th enext year or so) after a majority of the country decisively rejected the notion of another Conservative government. The job of an opposition party is twofold – they must hold the government to account, and they must audition to replace them. If you do the first job well enough, ironically you might fail at the second.

by epidemiologists and others of the medical persuasion, and maybe add results documented in the historical record. For instance, I might point out that, except for a tiny handful of dubiously certified medical experts, vaccines not only work a hot-damn, they are safe and they save lives... literally millions of lives. And that includes the long-discredited link to autism. Vaccines eradicated smallpox and decimated former child-killers measles, mumps, diphtheria... the list is long and healthy. Malaria may be next. When I was president of my Rotary Club (also good for my resume, I suppose, but probably won’t help me get a bridge-building job either) we were involved in a program called Polio-Plus – an effort spear-headed by Rotary to eradicate polio... using vaccines. We expected completion of the project by 2005. Although we were successful in reducing world-wide polio infections from a million per year to just a few thousand, and then a few hundred, total success

eludes us to this day. It’s not because vaccines don’t work, but because volunteers have been kept from extending them into some areas by anti-vaxxers fuelled by politicians who are not above using the disease to maintain control over segments of their population, by others seeing it as a military strategy, and by still others motivated by distrust born of culture, religion, or ultimately, simple ignorance. It’s the ignorance of people who should know better that is driving a resurgence of measles and other diseases by withholding vaccinations from innocent children in our neighbourhoods. If an apology is warranted in this matter, it’s the anti-vaxxers – the Educated Ignorant – who really should apologize to their children and to the communities they put at risk. Legally, they currently have the right to their “personal choices.” But morally, I consider it child abuse. Read Matthew Claxton’s Painful Truth online this week at mrtimes.com

Publishing anti-vaccination letter win-win Dear Editor, I admire S. Karanfilov’s letter regarding his and his wife’s feelings on vaccination by the fact that he is making it public to everyone who reads the paper [Apology owed on

vaccine issue, Jan. 21 TIMES Opinion]. As a grandfather of six grandchildren all attending elementary school, please contact Mr. Karanfilov and ask what school his children attended

and what grades. I can then do my utmost to ensure that my grandchildren do not come into contact with his children. It will be a winwin for both of us. Tom Faraone, via email

‘Cents’ add up quickly at transfer station Dear Editor, I read the article about the increase in fees at the transfer station and was struck by your definition of “cents” [Garbage costs increase by cents, Jan. 21, TIMES] It might be cents for large

amounts but for those of us who use the transfer station to dispose of household waste, the term “cents” is quite inaccurate. A large number of people dispose of less than 150 pounds per visit – for those

poor souls, the price has increased by 50 per cent, from $10 to $15. That’s an awful lot of cents! Perhaps you should be a bit more accurate in your headers. Claudia Hayward, Maple Ridge

Homeowners paying too much property tax Dear Editor, If property assessments take a rise in property values, the mill rate from the previous year should be lowered or stay the same.

This is not happening. What is happening is that when property assessments go up in value, municipal governments are raising the mill rate.

Facebook feedback

Last week, TIMES letter writers reacted – both pro and con – to Bob Groeneveld’s column about vaccinating children. Now followers are reacting to one of the letters...

“When my children entered school in Maple Ridge in the 1990s, vaccinations were mandatory. It was a reasonable expectation and is even more reasonable today, when so much more is known and where we’ve seen the price of failure to vaccinate. It is tempting to say, ‘Let them home school,’ but that still doesn’t protect the rest of our children.” – Val Patenaude “If you don’t want to vaccinate your kids, fine. Go live in a commune and don’t take advantage of herd immunity.” – Erin Brown “[Defender says] ‘I will not get into detail about the reasons behind this decision,’ then goes into all the details. No actual facts... just speculation, anecdotes, and fear mongering. Vaccines don’t cause autism.” – Sandra Brindley “Let me get this straight, I can’t send my kid to school with peanut butter but he figures it is his choice whether his kid comes to school with a deadly, yet preventable disease? What a joke.” – Derek McGuire “Well good at least during flu season keep your kids at home which means keep yours away from mine and also I have done the research and vaccinations have cured polio measles mumps and chickenpox the list goes on and on. And also I just have to say the only apology needed is for you to apologize to the rest of us for putting my kids and the rest of us at risk I say this because my son has cystic fibrosis so you could say I’m kind of an expert on the subject.” – Claude Morrissette

That is wrong and taxpayers are paying too much on their property taxes. Property tax formula is assessment value times mill rate, divided by 1000. For example, if the tax assessment is $500,000, the calculation is $500,000 x mill rate divided by 1000. In 2015 if the mill rate was 6, the property tax would be $3,000. If this assessment went up to $550,000 keeping the mill rate the same as in 2015, the property tax would be $3,300. Raising the mill rate to 6.5 would make the property tax $3,575, so in reality the gen-

eral rule of thumb is, never raise the mill rate when property assessments are on the increase. Also a rule of thumb, is before paying your tax bill, check all of the assessments on the street you live on to compare your property to your neighbour’s property assessment. You will find some big surprises, letting you know that you are paying your taxes in July on bogus tax assessments. This information can be found online under Evalue on the B.C. assessment site, or in your local library. Joe Sawchuk, Duncan

Goodwill has no borders Dear Editor, Under the last 10 years of Conservative rule, Canada’s share of global aid became the lowest of all industrialized nations. In 2014, the only G7 country with a smaller aid budget than Canada was Italy, which had an unemployment rate of over 12 per cent and whose economy was among the worst in Europe. The usual argument for this parsimony is it’s somehow better to help Canadians than foreigners. If human life has value, if we believe that every human being has potential, the accident of one’s location of birth shouldn’t be relevant. Recognizing this, Canada has pledged to spend 0.7 per cent of GDP on foreign assistance. We are now at less than half that, while our global partners have reached or are close to that goal. The second usual argument is our weak economy, but despite a deficit of nearly $200 billion, the UK still met their international obligations in 2014. The Conservatives and their tight-fisted policies are now gone, and it’s time to fulfill your predecessor’s oaths, Mr. Trudeau. Nathaniel Poole, via email

Video takedown investigated Incident captured on film by onlooker. Ridge Meadows RCMP have responded to a video they were made aware of on Monday, that captures an interaction between a Ridge Meadows RCMP officer and what appears to be an intoxicated male driver in Maple Ridge Park. The video was aired on Global BC news. “I have viewed the video that was taken by a witness, and it raises questions about how the situation was handled,” said Ridge

Meadows RCMP Supt. David Fleugel, Officer in Charge of the Ridge Meadows RCMP. “I have ordered a Code of Conduct investigation into this incident and the officer involved is being placed on administrative duties pending the results of that investigation.” In addition, he said, “we will also look at the witness’s allegations that she reported her concerns earlier and what happened to that complaint.” Fleugel added that as this matter is now being fully investigated, “we are unable to provide further comment at this time.”

Underpass discussed Harris Road crossing was a talking point for council last week. ERIC ZIMMER ezimmer@mrtimes.com

Is an underpass a feasible option for the railroad tracks at Harris Road? The scene of the crash.

At about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, a female pedestrian was crossing in the 11400 block of 240th Street, when she was struck by a northbound car. “The pedestrian received significant injuries, but these

are felt to be non-life threatening,” said Ridge Meadows RCMP Cpl. Brenda Winpenny. The victim was given immediate roadside first aid by an off-duty officer who came upon the scene.

Find quality employees.

The driver also remained on scene, and police entered into an impaired driving investigation, Winpenny said. Samples of the driver’s breath were obtained, and analysis indicated the driver had twice the legal limit of alcohol in her body. Now, police will be submitting a report to Crown counsel for consideration of charges against the driver, a 47-year old-Maple Ridge woman. The pedestrian remains in hospital, and Winpenny said the investigation is continuing.

Hunt on for Mr. & Mrs. John Doe:

Amateur photographer Mike Baraka was out taking pictures of local mountains on Dec. 30. He was on the Trans Canada Trail, near 132nd Avenue and 210th Street, when he was flagged down by a couple asking him to take their picture with their cellphone. He did, but also offered to take a picture with his camera. He offered to email it to them, but never heard from them again. “Send me an email, and I will send you your photo, mbaraka2@shaw.ca.”

City Wins Canadian Award for Financial Reporting

Pitt Meadows Named One of Best Places to Work in BC

The City is working on implementing new online services for residents! This property-based system will allow residents to view information about their tax account, schedule inspection and apply for permits, manage business and pet licensing and pay bills all online! The project will roll out in phases over the next 18 months, so watch for updates coming soon.

The City has hired a consultant to review the community’s parks & recreation needs over the next several weeks and a report with recommendations on a parks & recreation model is expected by the end of March. Once the consultant’s recommendations are received and Council decides on the direction, the City will be putting plans into place to build the services for the City’s parks and recreation department.

The City’s 2014 Annual Report was named a winner in the Canadian Awards for Financial Reporting this year. The Award recognizes Canadian local governments for comprehensive annual financial reports that evidence the spirit of transparency and full disclosure. The annual report is available online at pittmeadows.bc.ca and copies are available at City Hall.

BC Business Magazine recently released a list of 36 cities in BC deemed the Best Places to Work, with Pitt Meadows as #15. The criteria included six economic indicators that they felt reflected the health of a city’s job market, including five-year average household income change, average household income, average household income under 35, five-year population change, unemployment rate, and percentage of households with university degrees. Find more at bcbusiness.ca.

Winless: It was a tough

weekend for the senior girls basketball team at Pitt Meadows Secondary. The Marauders played host to an annual tournament, but were unable to churn out a win.

Organizers of a friendly hockey game this past Saturday to help bring together – and build partnerships between – the Katzie First Nation, the RCMP, and Pitt Meadows firefighters were “flabbergasted” with the turnout, and the success of the event. But the idea for the game goes back a little further and grew out of weekly, Saturday night youth hockey games already taking place. “The group was actually started actually by my co-worker Victor Florence,” explained Katzie youth support worker Tia Longstaffe. “We had brainstormed into what could we do for the youth to help build self-esteem within the youth of Katzie and to keep them busy on a Saturday night.” And attendance at the games has “grown every week.” Throughout the year, RCMP will regularly meet

Ball hockey was the name of the game on Saturday, as local police, firefighters, and Katzie First Nations indulged in a friendly match this past Saturday night. Rick Moyer/TIMES

with Katzie members, and sometimes with the Pitt Meadows fire department, explained Cpl. Tony Vanags of the community policing office. “A lot of it is working together with the youth, to try and build a relationship there,” he said. Over the past couple of years, Vanags has been involved with the Pulling Together canoe journey, “which has helped me get

to know a number of the youth,” he said. Saturday’s event “was a great chance to work with all the kids and all the Katzie in such a positive environment,” he added. At the end of it, all those who participated sat down together and shared a meal. “I cooked all day because I wanted to make sure everyone was nicely fed,” said Longstaffe. In addition to the weekly

youth games, a second full community game is already being planned for June. “A rematch,” Longstaffe said. “Since we lost, Victor and myself do have to take a nice swim in Pitt Lake.” But it’s all part of the fun. “It was a really good turnout, and it was nice to see the community come out and support the youth,” she added. > More: mrtimes.com, search ‘Katzie
