for this year’s event set for the Charles Bailey Theatre, which helps kick off the annual Silver City Days in May. Keandra Billingsley, Trynity Turnbull, Caïa
Gagnon, Naomi Savage, Nicole Johnson and Hannah Flick have met with their sponsors and are ready to represent them at an upcoming event on Feb. 12 at the
KP Hall. The debut will showcase the candidates, who will introduce themselves and share a speech on their sponsor — be it Trail Firefighters (Local
941), Kiwanis, Knights of Pythias, Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 11), Colombo Lodge or Shoppers Drug Mart. The girls will then be adorned with a sash and given

enrich and enhance the lives of young women by teaching life skills and promoting the city of Trail, according to coordinator Michelle Epp. The seven-month program brings together area professionals to train candidates aged 15-17 in topics such as public speaking, resume writing, interview skills, tourism, Trail history, nutrition, hair and skin care, money management, and much more. “The results” keep Epp committed to running the program, with help from Bev Benson. “Watching from the beginning to the end and seeing what they learn and what they get out of it really motivates me,” shared Epp. “Every year there is a surprise, a situation that might come up, that we haven’t experienced, and we have to deal with it and learn from it.” Organizers are happy to bring the program back to its traditional format after last year’s decision to split the responsibility when only three girls signed up. Trail Ambassadors Timberlyn Miles, Gina Oostlander, and Serena Deadmarsh shared the onslaught of volunteer opportunities, pageants and parades throughout B.C. and Washington to promote the city. “It was neat having them all equal instead of having a queen or princess, where one is viewed in the hierarchy as better,” added Epp. But the community missed the annual Miss Trail Pageant during Silver City Days and so did organizers. Epp is always floored to see each individual’s journey showcased at the Charles Bailey Theatre. Some girls slip on their first pair of heels or formal gown, others break out of their shell and find the confidence in communicating to a large crowd, and some learn the importance of volunteering and how to manage a busy schedule. “We like to open it up to every type of personality because everyone can benefit from it,” she said. “Sometimes we have people who we think, ‘Are you sure you’re going to get enough out of this?’ … and they always do.”

The Boundary and District Arts Council (BDAC), which is based out of Grand Forks, is getting ready for several exciting events in the spring. BDAC also has a new president who has the hit the ground running. Although Samantha Mercer-White has only been in Grand Forks for a year, she stepped forward in November to volunteer as president of the group. Mercer-White had no previous experience with BDAC other than performing with a hand drumming group at a show. “They were just about to close the doors,” she said. “BDAC was about to shut down and that would’ve been it. That would’ve been a big blow to the local arts community. So I just stepped up and brought some people with
me.” Mercer-White said the arts council serves several functions around the Boundary including securing grants for non-profit groups, organizing Arts and Culture Week, organizing the performance series, as well as putting on the Kettle River Festival of Arts and Culture. BDAC is operated by a board of directors currently with eight members as well as countless volunteers. BDAC has several member groups throughout the Boundary under their umbrella with everything from the Boundary Metis Association, Christina Lake Arts and Artisans Society, Grand Forks Choral Society, quilting groups, dance groups, and more. “We apply for grants through BC Arts Council and the touring council, which provides us with money for
the performance series so we bring artists from out of town here,” said Mercer-White. “It also provides us with money so other non-for-profits or any of our member groups can apply for grants.” BDAC started in 1976 as a way to support and promote the enjoyment of the arts, which it continues to do to this day. One of the most popular events they put on is the performance series, which includes 3-5 musical artists from out of town. The series has seen such prominent performers as Stephen Fearing, Vazzy and the upcoming The Lion The Bear The Fox. ‘The Lion The Bear The Fox are playing on April 8 at the GEM Theatre in Grand Forks,” said Mercer-White. “It’s the last performance series show for this year.” The band features Christopher Arruda (the
lion), Cory Woodward (the bear) and Ryan McMahon (the fox) who hail from Vancouver (lion and bear) and Ladysmith (fox). The band formed in 2012 and have been touring and performing since. Their debut EP “We’d Be Good Men”, was released on October 1, 2013. They recently released a couple of new songs (Hold My Love and Learn To Fly) off their upcoming CD, which is pegged for a summer release. “They’re a local BC band and they perform a type of bluegrass mixed with celtic,” said Mercer-White. “We’ve had good response so far with the series but we’re hoping to get even more people out and in the seats.” Mercer-White said the performance series helps BDAC to bring in bigger performers from out of town. “It gives people a chance to see bigger acts and youth a chance to see

Arts Week is another big, upcoming event for the arts council. The year’s arts week falls around the middle of April and features several great events. Mercer-White said BDAC will be working with local schools during the week. “We’ll have our local artists and crafters set up at the school and gallery 2,” she said. “Students will be able to check out the artists either at the school or the gallery. We had the weavers one year. They
set up a post so the students could actually see the handson experience. This year we’re hoping to get the woodworkers guild in and maybe some blacksmiths all well.” Mercer-White said they are hoping to expand to two weeks this year in order to allow students to see more artists. “It’s all about getting the community out and about and checking out the artists and what they do and where you can find them,” she said. “There’s also a tour people can take. People will get a map and They can go to the artists house and really check out what they do.” Mercer-White said that the artists all give up their time during Arts and Culture Week as a way of saying thanks to the community for their continued support. “The whole week is about the artists givContinued on A4

ing back and saying thanks for the support,” she said. “We’ve heard nothing but positive feedback from the member groups. They’re the ones doing all the work and they enjoy doing it every year. They’re looking forward to it getting bigger and better every year. To have that feedback is really nice.” There is also the always popular Arts and Culture Week gala at the auditorium on April 21 at Grand Forks Secondary. Past performances have featured Irish dancers, pianists, singers, belly dancing, poetry and more and this year promises to be even better.
“It’s just another way of saying thanks,” she said. “It’ll be by donation. We’re also having our reception to Arts and Culture Week on April 23 at gallery 2. It’ll be a wrap-up of everything. One final thank you from everyone. It’s going to be a lot of fun.” Mercer-White, who came to Grand Forks a year ago from Kaslo, said the arts community in the town and throughout the Boundary is good but could be even better. “It’s on the verge of thriving is what I would say,” she said. “There are a lot of artists and a lot of people interested in the arts. It seems like more people are getting interested in it.” She is hoping Grand Forks can

find something to “grab onto” in terms of arts and culture. “Every city in the Kootenays seems to focus on the arts, we may as well join them,” said Mercer-White. “Trail has a great performance series every year. They have great theatre groups and musicians that go through there, Castlegar has the sculptures, Rossland has the light opera players, Nelson has everything. It would be nice to have something like that. We’re right on the border with two crossings. We need to get those people up here spending their money and checking our arts. We’re half way between Calgary and Vancouver and just a few hours from Kelowna and Spokane.”

Oranges CRAWFORD BAY — Following the cancellation of this year’s Starbelly Jam music festival, local enthusiasts are trying to prevent other large-scale events from going belly-up. “For 16 years our small East Shore community has laboured mightily to host one of the province’s best music festivals,” reads an announacement on the Starbelly website. “Each year hundreds of beautiful volunteers have stepped forward to make this party happen.” Unfortunately, this year that won’t be the case. “We were facing real challenges filling a handful of key management roles that would have allowed us to produce the vibrant, safe and well-organized event that we are famous for,” the notice reads. Kootenay Lake Chamber of Commerce chair Gina Medhurst said the news will mean an economic blow to the East Shore. “Every year at Starbelly the campgrounds are crowded, the bed and breakfasts are packed full and all the stores are open until 9 p.m. every night. It’s definitely going to be an economic shock,” she said.

Marijuana-themed mountain range on Google Earth NELSON — Google may have a new definition for getting high. Nelson resident Britz Robins recently used the popular search engine’s mapping software to find a lake on Google Earth after a photographer shared a picture of it on Instagram with the hashtag #explorekootenaylake. Instead of the lake, which Robins was searching for in
the Riondel area, she instead found pot-related place names for such non-existant locals including Weed Peak, Grow Op Peak, Cannibis Peak and Hydroponic Peak. “I started zooming in on some of the smaller lakes to see if any names would pop up,” said Robins. “They didn’t. But I stumbled upon those names instead!” Robins, who works for both

I think the only ones that show up at first glance are Loki and another one. But when you zoom in, the pot mountains show up.” It wasn’t immediately clear
where the names came from, or how they ended up on Google. The names aren’t listed in the BC Geographic Names database and no longer show up on Google Maps. One online commenter, however, suggested the names originated at bivouac.com, a website devoted to mountains of Western Canada. Pot smokers, it seems, will have to find another way to reach Weed Peak’s summit.

One hundred thirtieth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/ Boundary place names Nashville, also known as Nashville City and Nashton, was a phantom town at the confluence
of the Kaslo River and its south fork (today known as Keen Creek). It was first mentioned in the Nelson Miner of July 9, 1892: “The survey of Nashville townsite on the forks of the Kaslo river was completed last week.” The townsite plan,
dated July 4, shows John Fielding was the surveyor. The streets were simply numbered first through sixth and the avenues named A through J. The town was platted in advance of construction of the Kaslo and Slocan Railway, but as the Nelson Tribune of Feb.

9, 1893 reported, “The Kaslo-Slocan railway in locating its line to pass at some distance from oldestablished and flourishing towns like Nashville, at the mouth of the south fork of Kaslo river, and Mahoneyville, at the mouth of Rabbit creek, is only doing as other great railways have done.” The following week, The Tribune added: “Nelson, as compared with Kaslo and Three Forks is quite dull, but quite lively as compared with Nashville and Mahoneyville.” (Mahoneyville was another phantom town, possibly named after Nelson and Kaslo hotelier Mike Mahoney. Rabbit Creek isn’t an official geographic name, so its location is unclear.) Nashville’s 274 lots were auctioned in October 1892, but not much became of the site. According to the Tribune of Aug. 11, 1894, “The streets of Nashville, a townsite at the forks of Kaslo river, five miles from Kaslo, are so lit-

tered with fallen timber that prospectors have difficulty in traveling over the ground and in places have to trespass on valuable, though unoccupied, town lots.” The Ledge of Feb. 21, 1895 listed Nashville among “deserted paper cities of the country.” When the Kaslo and Slocan Railway issued its first timetable on Nov. 25, 1895, it called the place South Fork, but it was also known as Nashville Siding. In November 1896, The Ledge reported townsite clearing was underway and the British Columbia News of Aug. 13, 1897 announced “The Nashville hotel at South Fork was opened to the public last Saturday by A.P. Hanson.” It probably wasn’t in business for very long — it was only listed in the 1897 and 1898 civic directories. According to the Phoenix Pioneer of July 18, 1908: “John Keen is about to complete arrangements to subdivide the old Nashville town-

site into fruit blocks and place the same on the market.” When the CPR rebuilt the Kaslo and Slocan line in the 1910s, they renamed the siding Zwicky (often misspelled Zwickey) after William Edward Zwicky (18581929), manager of the Cork-Province mine. Zwicky was on the CPR timetable by September 1914. Don Blake writes in Valley of the Ghosts that a post office application was filed for Zwicky: “This was given the OK and a die was struck and registered, bearing the name Zwicky. The post office opening date was to be July 2, 1915.” For some reason, the post office opened on Sept. 1 as Nashton instead. Blake says “The people of Nashton were rather upset” about the name Zwicky being used and “their outcry resulted in the Zwicky die being cancelled, without ever being used.” However, no examples of Nashton have been found prior to

The start of a new year means many British Columbians make resolutions to improve themselves or their habits in 2016, whether that’s eating healthier, exercising more, setting work-related goals or aiming to be more environmentally friendly. This was finally explained in a 1949 letter from William J. Twiss of Kaslo to A.G. Harvey. Twiss said John Keen worked on the survey of the Nashville townsite and named it after his bride-to-be, Sarah Helena Nash Twiss (1866-1944), who was William’s sister. She was among Kaslo’s earliest female politicians, serving as a school trustee in 1913. She ran for city council unsuccessfully in 1918, successfully in 1932, and also ran for mayor in 1933. The name survives in Nashton Creek, formerly Cedar Creek and Come Again Creek. The present name was officially adopted in 1957. John Keen, who was Kaslo’s third mayor and later an MLA, also had a siding on the Kaslo and Slocan Railway posthumously named after him.

CASTLEGAR — Plans are being made for a huge Castlegar homecoming celebration for the Canada Day weekend. 2016 marks the 70th anniversary of Castlegar’s incorporation as a village and the 50th anniversary of its incorporation as a town. It is also Selkirk College’s 50th anniversary. Organizers are reaching out to anyone who has previously lived or worked in Castlegar including pioneer families, grad classes, past city employees, mayors, councillors and their families. “We are calling it Castlegar’s homecoming, but that includes Kinnaird, Robson, Brilliant, the whole area. We all share history together,” said Castlegar Homecoming 2016 committee chair Joanne Baker. July 1 events will piggyback

Funding is available for: individuals and groups through community arts councils; minor capital projects; touring; arts and heritage mentoring/master classes; organizational development; major projects; artists in education; major exhibitions; major heritage capital projects; and new heritage projects. Applications are adjudicated once a year by local arts councils and the CKCA Steering Committee. Farmers’ co-op launches crowdfunding campaign Imagine a healthy, abundant secure local food future. It’s not magic, but it requires a grand vision, cooperation, and buy-in from food producers, stores, restaurants and, most importantly, you. Local farmers are passionate about growing beautiful, healthy food. But they struggle against a tide of low wages, expensive land, inexpensive imported food, and inadequate local supply systems. Years ago, 75 per cent of the food we consumed in this region was grown locally. Today, that
number is down to five per cent. In order to change these statistics, we need to be able to find nutritious and affordable locally grown food everywhere we shop and dine. The newly formed Kootenay and Boundary Food Producers Co-op has a vision for change. Its goal is to provide much needed infrastructure and support services to food producers in the area: rebuilding a local distribution system, helping to expand markets, creating long-term storage for crops to be stored over winter, and pro-
viding access to a value added processing facility. In short, the critical things farmers and processors need to make their businesses viable. Last year the co-op began the work to build a membership of local farmers and secondary food producers, which is an ongoing priority. They also conducted a successful food distribution pilot between a few farmers, stores and restaurants. These initiatives resulted in the farmer members gaining an extra day to stay on their farm and do what they love — farm.
The co-op is working with all the food groups and associations in the region to ensure we are not duplicating efforts but building stronger together. Students prepare to enter Junior Dragons’ Den Junior Dragons’ Den is returning to the West Kootenays. Put on by Community Futures Development Corporations since 2014, the competition is for youth from Grade 8 to postsecondary school and is based on the popular CBC show, Dragons’ Den. Youth submit applications pitching a business idea or a business improvement idea. Short listed applicants from each of three age category are
then assigned a mentor from the local business community who will help them refine their business concept and turn it into a one-page business plan with financial statements and a video elevator pitch. Students will only have so long to prepare, because they’ll have to present their business plans at a regional competition in Trail on Thursday, April 21, in front of a live audience and a panel of local business leaders.
The first, second and third place winners from each age category will be rewarded cash prizes and awards to go toward the start-up costs of their business, or to expand their existing business. Winners of the regional competition will then advance to the Junior Dragons’ Den Championship 2016, also in Trail on Saturday, April 30, where they’ll face the winners from the other two regions. John Reed, junior initiatives
coordinator for Community Futures of GreaterTrail, says they anticipate receiving over 200 entries from the West Kootenay Boundary region alone this year. So far three students from Rossland, ten students from Nelson, over 60 students from Castlegar, and over 80 students from Trail are expected to apply. Dance Extravaganza returns to Grand Forks
The always fun Dance Extravaganza is returning to Grand Forks on Thursday with a theme of “Movement in the Boundary.” The show starts at 7 p.m. and will be held at the Grand Forks Secondary School auditorium. Tickets are available at New West Trading in Grand Forks as well as the Christina Lake Welcome Centre. The show is being put
together by the Hip Sisters and all proceeds will go to the Rock Creek and Westbridge fire relief. New this year at the extravaganza is martial arts including tai chi and kung-fu. People can also expect to see plenty of their favourite dancing with everything from belly dancing, latin dancing, Irish, can can, and much more.
