$10 million injection will benefit Search and Rescue’s ‘small army’ C AROLYN GR ANT
It was a big surprise and a gift from the government, says Wendy Heatherington, Search Manager for Kimberley Search and Rescue. She is speaking of the announcement that came out late Tuesday that the province has committed a further $10 million for ground search and rescue. The one-time funding will help bolster training, administrative support and equipment renewals. “It’s a small army of 2,500 volunteers that comb the province’s backcountry, rappel into steep ravines and weather the worst of the elements, while leaving behind the comforts of home to go seek and find those who are lost or injured,” said Minister of State for Emergency Preparedness Naomi Yamamoto. “Their selflessness is woven into the fabric of their service, and today’s investment continues on our commitment to strengthening them and the tapestry of public safety throughout the province.”

Region receiving 29 nurses: IHA East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook slated for 16 new nurses TRE VOR CR AWLEY
With 300 nursing positions coming to the Interior Health Authority, it looks like 16 will be coming to Cranbrook and 29 to the East Kootenay region, according to an IHA spokesperson. “It is worth noting that these are the numbers as of today and they may change,” said Karl Hardt, a communications officer with IHA, in an email to the Daily Townsman. “We are reviewing the needs and vacancies regularly as we go through this process. Postings across Interior Health include a variety of nursing positions – in our facilities, either for general or specialty areas, or in the community.” The jobs are part of a province-wide effort to create an additional 1,600 nursing positions by March 2016.

Baker’s Orange Door opens doors to the musical mind
New software, mixing technology furthers MBSS music technology program as one of the most advanced and prolific in Canada BARRY COULTER
Mount Baker Secondary School’s innovative and renowned music recording program has taken a step upward into yet another level. The school’s Music Composition and Technology (MCT) Course, headed up by instructor
Evan Bueckert, has secured the rights to some top of the line software for its recording facility — Orange Door Studios — as well as some new hardware. Bueckert developed the Baker program and launched it in 2004. From a rudimentary rock school program of five students, it has
since then grown to a lab of 15 stations, involving 30 students each term, putting out two fully produced albums each year. “This has put us on the map as the most technologically advanced and prolific high school recording arts teaching studio in Canada,” Bueckert said, during a tour of the upgrades in the school music room. The new software is
called Reason 8.3, developed by the Swedish company Propellerhead Software. It is in the mail, and should be available for the class as the new term commences. Makayla Lubbers, in Grade 11, is familiar with earlier versions of the software, and describes it as a virtual studio.

CBAL’s Family Literacy Day Celebration
The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) hosted its annual Family Literacy Day celebration Wednesday, Jan. 27, at the Manual Training Centre in Cranbrook. The event featured games, activities, community gathering, the recognition of this year’s Literacy Champion, and presentations to the participants in the school writing project (the theme this year was “Let’s Play”). Along with CBAL, partners and sponsors include the Cranbrook Daily Townsman, the Cranbrook Public Library and School District 5. Barry Coulter photos

Music tech students’ album out Friday Continued from page 1
“It’s really user friendly. You can start from basically no experience in writing music, and just open it up and go for it.” The software simulates instruments — any instrument — plus all the effects to be found in the digital can even be set to reproduce the sounds of famous studios, like Abbey Road in London, for example. Bueckert also says it’s groundbreaking in its networkability. “From all my research, I can’t find any other school that’s teaching in a multi-seat licensed lab.” The school has also acquired a new Behringer X-32 channel digital mixing console, which Bueckert says is the most cutting edge technology out on the road today — “pretty much every band in the world either tours with one or demands that one be available for their shows.” Bueckert himself helped mix two recent concerts — DOA and Great Lake Swimmers — on this board, “and everyone was right at home.” As to the new board, acquired with the help of Columbia Basin Trust, as well as it’s use in the studio it will see service during the school’s dramatic and musical numbers, like the upcoming “Mary Poppins.” Makayla ran the board last year from the musical production of ‘Drowsy Chaperone.” “The one thing was that every time there’s a scene change you have to change things manually — your hands are flying all over. With this new board all the scenes can be pre-programmed.” Bueckert says these new advances, plus a wonderful acoustic live room, several treated iso-booths and a comprehensive microphone collection have been getting the school attention from far and wide. Meanwhile, students have just
wrapped up the introductory version of the MCT course and their album is about to come out. The advanced class of the course is commencing with the new term. Sienna Rudrum, a Grade 12 student, was involved with the album’s creation, including contributing a song (students get one song each for the album produced in Grade 11, five to seven songs each for the album produced in Grade 12). “The album, I think, is kind advanced for our age group,” Sienna said. “Everybody got really into the program this year, and we spent a lot of time on our songs. Sienna’s own song, in the Indie style, is her own lyrics sung to piano accompaniment. But the album as a whole covers a wide range of styles — “Some of it’s kind of ‘rappy,’ some is more Indie, or alternative; some people are doing jingles. There are some people concentrating on a storyline.” Bueckert said that while grad students are producing their own work, more importantly they dare gaining hands-on experience recording, mixing and producing other live acts in the studio. “It is a win-win situation: visiting artists get free studio time, and the students get work experience. It has been a successful venture so far. “The best part is that the kids are leaving the class fully prepped on the latest tech and concepts in the industry and pursuing careers.” Both students recommend the course heartily — extolling how it helps one tap into one’s creativity. “It’s my favourite class,” Sienna said. “You feel really good after finishing a song — or even just a bar.” The new album, written and produced by the students, is available as of today on soundcloud (https:// soundcloud.com/orangedoors).
New nursing positions Continued from page 1
“Nurses are important, highly-skilled members of health care teams throughout British Columbia, and today’s announcement acknowledges their integral role in the health system,” said Health Minister Terry Lake, in a government press release. “Over the past year, we have been working closely with nurses to make health care improvements that benefit both patients and staff. We are confident this spirit of partnership will continue as we work together on a new collective agreement that meets the goals of nurses, health authorities and the Province.” IHA’s allocation of the 1,600 positions is the second largest behind Fraser Health, which has been allocated 400 positions.
“To nurses who are trying to provide safe patient care while working short in ERs and operating rooms and nurses who cope with overwhelming workloads, this agreement means that relief is on the way,” said Gayle Duteil, president of the BCNU. It remains to be seen how many of the 16 positions that Cranbrook is getting will to towards staffing at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. The funding announcement follows an agreement between government, the BCNU and the Nurses Bargaining Association worth $5 million to provide specialty nurse training for positions such as emergency room, operating room, obstetric and neonatal nurses.

Search and rescue Continued from page 1
The province already supports Search and Rescue throughout the province with $6.3 million in funding for training and operational costs, Heatherington says. They also pay liability insurance, which runs about $200,000 per year. “But this $10 million is in addition to that. That’s the most exciting part.” And the money is only for ground search and rescue. The Coast Guard and Air Services are funded federally. It is not clear yet how the funding will be allocated. Heatherington says Kimberley Search and Rescue will do a gap analysis to see what kinds of needs they have in regards to equipment and training. Prior to this announcement, Kimberley Search and Rescue, as well as others in the region, have relied on donations and grants. “Most Search and Rescue teams in B.C. are societies so we can access grants. And in this area, the Columbia Basin Trust has been very helpful,” Heatherington said. “And we rely on donations as well. Teams donate time to provide first aid for events and we earn some money that way.” While the announcement was a surprise, Heatherington says that BCSARA has been working with the province to try to come up with funding models. It couldn’t come at a better time, because ground search and rescue teams are busier than ever and rescues are getting more complex, she says. “We are seeing a lot more calls. Five years ago, we maybe had six to ten calls a year. Last year, we had over 20. People are accessing the backcountry more now. And they should. This is an incredible and beautiful province. But people not familiar with it don’t recognize how quickly a situation can turn around.” Heatherington says that British Columbia search and rescue teams

Rescues are getting more technical and complex, as evidenced by this one last summer at Findlay Creek. Working together are Kimberley SAR, Cranbrook SAR, Columbia Valley SAR and Golden SAR. answer two thirds of all search and rescue calls across Canada. “We respond to most of the calls in Canada and the terrain is more extreme and calls are increasing in complexity.” “The service that search and rescue groups provide in their communities is recognized as an invaluable asset to the people of this province and today we welcome the additional support of the B.C. government to help strengthen the work that’s being done,” said president of BC Search and Rescue Association Chris Kelly. “While we continue to work with the province on the proposed alternate support
model for search and rescue, this money will help relieve some of the funding pressures and provide for increased training and other tools for those who tirelessly serve as volunteers.” “We are fortunate within B.C. to have such a dedicated group of individuals who make serving the safety of others their passion,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. “Within ground search and rescue there are roughly 100,000 hours of volunteer time donated to searches; to replace these would cost more than $5 million annually in direct salary dollars. We are grateful for their
commitment and in turn, government is strengthening its commitment with this one time grant.” “We all know it takes a whole community of frontline workers like police, paramedics, fire fighters, coroners, and volunteers like those from search and rescue, to keep our communities safe,” said Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Mike Morris. “Public safety is our number-one priority and this additional resource will help bolster support to the front lines of search and rescue operations in communities throughout B.C.”

Kootenay Literary Competition set to open February 1
BC Hydro is making improvements to the connection between two circuits in the Slaterville neighbourhood of Cranbrook. A crew of five Power Line Technicians began work on Sunday, January 24 at the intersection of 6th Street North and Slater Road to install two new poles, a new electronic recloser and a remote switch between two circuits. Once the work is complete, the control centre in Vancouver will be able to remotely switch customers to another source of supply during an outage. The improvements will mean fewer and shorter outages for about 3,800 customers in Cranbrook. The work will wrap up by February 5. The improvements have been made without impacting customers and flaggers have assisted in directing traffic and keeping the public and the work area safe.

Writers, prepare to take pen in hand. Potential literary glory is at hand, as well as potential cash. The annual Kootenay Literary Competition (KLC)is set to be launched, and organiers are putting out the call for entries. On Monday, Feb. 1, the theme for this year’s contest will be announced and submissions will be open for adult entrants. Since its beginning as a small competition for Nelson writers, the competition has expanded to cover the entire Kootenay region. KLC aims to support local artists and literacy in the Kootenays. Once the theme is released on February 1, writers may interpret it in any way they like, and approach it through any of the genre categories. The theme is to be integrated into the creative work at the writer’s discretion. Detailed rules are available on the KLC website (www.kootenayliterarycomp.com). There are three writing categories for adults: fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry. Cash prizes are awarded for the first and second place entries in each category. Submissions will be judged by a panel of writing professionals, who will provide feedback and suggestions on the winning work. Winners of the KLC win substantial cash prizes and gain recognition at a gala event. The deadline for submission for this year’s competition is Friday, April 29, 2016. Questions about the competition can be emailed through the website (www.kootenayliterarycomp.com).

Major supermarket chains have lost a court battle to continue offering their pharmacy customers loyalty reward points on prescription drugs in B.C. A B.C. Court of Appeal ruling Wednesday upholds the power of the College of Pharmacists of B.C. to enforce its two-year-old ban on incentive programs like Air Miles and other loyalty rewards. The decision, which overturned a B.C. Su-
preme Court ruling last year that initially struck down the ban, says inducements from pharmacists are “a matter of public interest and professional standards” for the college, which can prohibit incentives without clear proof of harm to customers. The pharmacists’ regulatory body, which imposed the ban in late 2013, had argued loyalty points are a powerful lure for consumers that can alter their medication buying habits and potentially harm their

health. “The College considers the provision of incentives like redeemable points to be unethical, unsafe and unprofessional,” registrar Bob Nakagawa said. “Pharmacists are medication experts, and sometimes the right thing for them to do is not dispense a drug. A patient’s motivation to collect redeemable points may inappropriately encourage drug use and can put their health at risk.” One of the objections

raised by the college was that insured patients who don’t pay out of pocket might continue to refill a prescription after they no longer need it just to collect more points and the unneeded drugs may be abused or diverted to the illegal drug trade. The case included anecdotal evidence that the top priority of some customers was to find out how many points they’d get filling a prescription rather than information on proper use or health effects. There were also allegations of pharmacists retroactively dispensing medication to patients who had already missed
past days but were eager to get the points “thus generating further revenue for the pharmacist for drugs the patient does not need.” The ruling is a defeat for Sobeys and Jace Holdings, the companies that operate Safeway and Thrifty Foods stores. Shoppers Drug Mart Inc. was also an intervenor in the case. A Sobeys representative said the company is disappointed with the court’s decision and considering its options. Incentives have long been forbidden on methadone prescriptions as well as any Pharmacare-covered prescriptions.

The bookish Andy Warhol Mike Selby
“Is
Andy Warhol the He m i n g way of our generation?” ‘The Village Voice’ posed this question to their readers in their December 21st, 1967 edition. At first glance this query appears to be in jest. Warhol certainly didn’t come close to resembling the Pulitzer & Nobel Prize-winning war hero who, when he wasn’t boxing or bullfighting, was killing as many African lions and deep sea marlins as he could. Warhol was lithe, effeminate, and had cultivated his mannerisms after Shirley Temple. Despite this, the ‘Voice’ was serious. Between the two World Wars, Hemingway had changed the form of the novel by replacing flowery and exorbitant language with his plain style. Was Warhol doing the same for the ‘60s generation, by stripping away the commonly held notions of what constituted art, and replacing it with everyday objects such as a Campbell’s soup can? Their seriousness ends there, as the ‘Voice’ spends the rest of the article openly mocking Warhol, unfortunately confusing him for the hype which surrounded him. Warhol had just published ‘Index’ — one of the most creative and seminal books of the twentieth century. A combination of everything Warhol loved about books themselves, ‘Index’ included photographs, pop-up pages of art, a disappearing signature, and a recording of a German interview (because, Warhol indicates, Gutenberg was German.) Random House launched the book like they did every other bestseller — with a party/book signing. Yet the ‘Voice’ felt it was fake — all “make believe” — an excuse for publishers to mingle with superstars. Warhol the artist had no place in the publishing world: how much longer can “he chew more than he bites off?” A little research would have revealed that the ‘Voice’ couldn’t have been more wrong. Warhol wrote, illustrated, designed and con-
Andy Warhol tributed to more than 80 books before his death. He also left behind dozens of unfinished and unpublished works. More than any other medium, books meant everything to Warhol. His love for them may have began in 1936, when the eight-year old Warhol caught Sydenham’s chorea — the involuntary jerking of the muscles caused by scarlet fever. Bedridden, books provided him comfort, distraction, and the building blocks for his future creativity. Children’s books appear to have been his first love, and he wrote his first one while at college. Untitled and unpublished, it was the humorous story of a Mexican jumping bean. His next book was the first in a series he called the “Books of Friendship” — privately printed volumes he distributed to
friends and relatives as gifts. The first one was titled ’25 Cats Named Sam,’ a children’s book about 16 cats named Sam (not 25), with the lettering done by his mother. Similar books soon followed, including ‘A is an Alphabet’ and ‘Love is a Pink Cake.’ ‘Bottom of My Garden’ is also of this series, another brightly illustrated book about fairies dancing away in a magical garden. Some saw sexual overtones in the drawings, making the book suitable only for adults. The illustrated cookbook ‘Wild Raspberries’ also came out during this time. As the ‘50s turned into the ‘60s, Warhol was hired by Doubleday Books to illustrate their popular anthology series — the ’Best in Children’s Books.’ These drawings are Warhol at his imaginative best:
each one is full of joy, happiness, and creativity. That they are so unlike his famous artwork is another tribute to his artistic genius. (While a Warhol painting will cost you 100 million dollars, a first edition of this book can be bought for less than 10 dollars.) From here Warhol designed dust-jackets for numerous adult novels at Doubleday, including ‘Pistols for Two’ by Aaron Marc Stein, ‘The Desire and the Pursuit of the Whole’ by Baron Corvo, and ‘Love is a Pie’ by Maude Hutchins. He would also produce dust jackets for Simon & Schuster and the Noonday Press. But then came the soup cans, Marilyn, the Factory, and his “15 minutes of fame” quote. Although mostly known for his bizarre films, pop art, and his massive entourage, he continued to write and design books up until his death in 1987. ‘The Philosophy of Andy Warhol’ ‘Andy Warhol’s Exposures’ and ‘America’ were some of last published books in his lifetime, the last one contrasting those suffering grinding poverty with Madonna and Truman Capote. His last book published was ‘Andy Warhol’s Children’s Book,’ a fitting return to his origins and first love: his books. Mike Selby is Reference Librarian at the Cranbrook Public Library

Robbie Burns Dinner 2016 Robin Betker
Another delightful evening memorializing the great Scottish poet Robbie Burns has come and gone for the year 2016. This past Saturday had the dancers from the Liela Cooper and Hali Duncan Schools of Highland Dance engaging a record crowd at the Heritage Inn in Cranbrook. The evening started with Kimberley Pipe Band’s Pipe Major Jock MacDonald piping in the Haggis along with the Honour Guard and the Haggis Bearer – Jason Tichauer. A dramatic rendition of Burns “Address to a Haggis” was delivered by Russ Kinghorn, which just gets better and more dramatic every year! Then was the traditional toast to the haggis and the evening was started. Bill Plant did the Selkirk Grace followed by Doug McPhee doing the ‘Immortal Memory’ Jeopardy Style! Dino Pallone gave us his ‘Toast to the Lassies’ and his wife Nicole Pallone had a feisty reply. No Burns dinner would be complete without a Toast to the Queen provided by
Liela Cooper and Hali Duncan Schools of Highland Dance prepare to perform. Jeannie MacDonald. There were traditional Scottish dances from the highland dancers as well as new choreographies. The Kimberley Pipe Band wowed the audience with tunes throughout the night as well as playing for the dancers. A great meal was provided by the Heritage Inn staff of roast beef, mashed neeps and tatties and of course the crowning glory: the
HAGGIS! Master of Ceremonies Bob McCue kept the evening running smoothly, regaling everyone with his wit and humour. The evening was an extraordinary success! Get your tickets early next year, as it is always a sell out event. All monies raised go toward the Kimberley Highland Dance Competition in April.

Syrian Peace Talks: Who’s going?
A
new round of UN-sponsored peace talks to end the ghastly civil war in Syria is scheduled to open in Paris on Friday, but even now it is not clear who will be attending. Islamic State will certainly not be invited, and the UN special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, has not yet revealed whether he has invited the other main Islamist groups, the Nusra Front and its ideological twin and ally, Ahrar al-Sham. Together these extreme Islamist groups account for up to 90 percent of the rebel forces fighting Bashar al-Assad’s brutal regime, and even if invited they probably wouldn’t come. The remainder, a ragbag of small groups sometimes called the Free Syrian Army, might show up (under American pressure), or maybe not. Assad’s representatives, by contrast, would certainly go to Paris, because he knows that there is no risk that he would be forced into a deal that removes him from power. His strategy for survival has worked well enough that he can now afford to negotiate with some of the rebels. When peaceful mass protests demanding democracy spread to Syria in early 2011 as part of the “Arab Spring”, Assad’s forces responded at first with cautious violence. Snipers killed people in the unarmed crowds of protesters, but the army didn’t machine-gun the lot. Maybe he was just afraid the army wouldn’t obey his orders, but he may also have hoped that that level of intimidation would be enough to end the demonstrations. However, Assad called all the protesters “terrorists” from the start — and he released hundreds of extreme Islamists from prison. This has been widely interpreted as an attempt to create a real armed Islamist rebellion. Then he could claim to be fighting foreign-backed “terrorism”, thus winning support from abroad and from Syria’s
own frightened minorities. Whether he intended from the start to push the country into full-scale civil war is impossible to know. At the very least, he quickly realised that the non-violent, non-sectarian protest movement was a greater threat to his survival than an armed uprising that would only be backed by Sunni Muslim Arabs (only 60 percent of the population). Assad got some inadvertent help from Turkey and the Arab Gulf states, whose leaders wanted to see a Sunni sectarian victory in Syria, not an inclusive Gwynne and non-sectarian democracy. So they lavDyer ished money and weapons on Sunni Arabs who were willing to fight the regime, thus undermining and discrediting the non-violent movement. The slide from non-violent protest to armed uprising gave Assad an excuse to use far more violence. By October of 2011 his forces were bombing and shelling rebel-held areas of Syrian cities – and jihadi extremists, including many released from his jails, were taking over the rebel forces with the help of Saudi Arabian and Turkish money and guns. So the rebellion fell largely into the hands of Sunni Arabs of the extremist Salafi persuasion. The country’s large non-Arab, non-Muslim and Shia Muslim minorities, together with much of its Sunni Arab population, reluctantly decided that Assad’s regime was the least bad option – and the result is the Syria we see today. The exodus of refugees has reduced the population to 16 million, of whom 10 million, including almost all the minorities, live under government control. There are about two million Arabs in the Syrian part of Islamic State, another two million under the control of other rebel forces (also dom-
inated by Sunni Arab Islamists), and two million Kurds who now have their own proto-state. It’s a calamity for Syria, but it means that the regime will survive. There was a brief wobble last summer, when Islamist rebels enjoying increased support from Turkey and Saudi Arabia started driving the very tired Syrian army back on several fronts, but the Russian military intervention on Assad’s side in September stabilised the situation. It’s now clear that nobody can win the war – but nobody can lose it either. Broadly speaking, Syria has been partitioned into four more or less sovereign territories. The government rules only one-fifth of Syria, but it includes most of the cities, industry and agriculture, and almost two-thirds of the population. The Kurds control a band across the north of the country along the Turkish border. Islamic State runs a large swathe of sparsely populated territory in the east of the country. And the Islamist extremists of the Nusra Front, an al-Qaeda affiliate, dominate the north-west behind the non-Islamist facade of the Jaysh al-Islam. The “peace talks” that Russia has been promoting since it intervened are not really about creating a reunified post-Assad Syria. All Moscow is looking for (and increasingly Washington too) is a ceasefire between all the other players that leaves them in control of their own territory and isolates Islamic State. Even that is probably too much to hope for. At Turkey’s insistence, the Kurds have not been invited to the talks. The Nusra Front will not show up either, and even the smaller non-Islamist rebel groups are threatening to boycott the talks – which would leave Assad’s regime looking like the only party interested in “peace”. The war will continue for some time yet. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist published in 45 countries.

Jim Cameron “Above all, we shall try to make our city not just another little city, but the most progressive and busiest little city in the interior.” – Mayor R.E. Sang, January 5, 1950.
O
n a warm evening in August, 1962, a simple ceremony was held in the Mount Baker High School auditorium in which Robert Earl Sang was made a Freeman of the City of Cranbrook, the ninth such inductee to that time. Actually, it was a simple three-part ceremony in which Bert Sang received his freemanship, Joyce Metcalf received honours as leader of the Cranbrook Girls Bugle Band and Fred Clark of Wycliffe received a bursary for his high academic standing. The modest ceremony was appropriate as Bert was generally a modest type of fellow. He lived in a modest house, drove a modest car, held modest jobs and, as Mayor of Cranbrook, held the reins of power in his hands for fifteen years, the second-longest serving ringmaster in city circus history. Born in Hamiota, Manitoba, in 1897, and raised in Lethbridge, Bert found himself working for the Adolf Lumber Co. at Baynes Lake by the age of 17. He took a job with the Western Grocers Ltd. in Cranbrook in 1918 and became, according to the Courier of December 31, 1920, “… one of the best known and best liked men on the road, even in the days of high prices.” He soon courted Henrietta Mae Beryl Cameron, daughter of twice mayor of Cranbrook William Cameron and a popular young lady in her own right. They married in the Anglican Church on December 25, 1920, a union that was struck by tragedy less than two years later when Mrs. Sang died from complications following an operation for appendicitis, ever a danger in those years. Bert’s relationship with her family continued and in November, 1923, he and his father-in-law purchased Lester Clapp’s tobacco business on Baker Street. Bert left Western Grocers shortly thereafter in order to run the business, a job in which his sales knowledge, work ethic and easy way with customers brought continued success. He joined the local Gyro Club, taking part in their amateur theatre productions, baseball games and other fundraising events while continuing to expand business sales

While the Ice (8-364-0) open a two-game Alberta road trip Friday when they face the Red Deer Rebels (31-15-1-2) at the Enmax Centrium, Zaharichuk and Dylan Stewart, another Kootenay newcomer this season, are eagerly looking forward to Sunday’s contest in Edmonton against the Oil Kings (19-23-6-1). Zaharichuk, a native of Sherwood Park, and Stewart, from west Edmonton, grew up playing against one another in the Edmonton area. “We played against each other our whole minor hockey careers,” Stewart said Thursday. “He was a Sherwood Park kid, I was a CAC Northwest Zone type of kid. “We kind of hung out this summer this bit. Never thought we’d play together, but it’s pretty nice… Coming here, I didn’t know a lot of guys. Getting more people from the Edmonton area is always nice. “[Jesse has] scored some big goals for us. Even just setting up Alfaro and ‘Z’. He quarterbacks the power-play at the point and I haven’t seen him make a bad play, really. He’s very good offensively.” Before Stewart and Zaharichuk get to taste a little home cooking and

catch up with friends and family, they’re tasked with the deep, stacked roster of the Red Deer Rebels. “They clearly stacked their entire roster, they’re pretty intimidating on paper,” Stewart said. “We just need to follow the plan that [coach] Luke [Pierce] gives us, finish all our hits and play hard. They’re going to be offensive and they’re going to get their chances. But if we play the right way and play defensively first, I think we have a good chance.” The Ice are expected to be without forward Austin Gray, who is dealing with a concussion, which he suffered in practice, according to Pierce. Outside of that, and the obvious and on-going unavailability of Jaedon Descheneau (shoulder surgery), the Ice are relatively healthy head-
ing into the weekend. “Every team gets fired up to play against Red Deer,” Pierce said. “We obviously know what they have in store this year. There’s no secret about how they’re dangerous. Guys are fired up to play them and energized.” Puck drop between the Rebels and Ice is slated for 7 p.m. at the Enmax Centrium in Red Deer Friday night. After that, the Ice take Saturday off before wrapping up a quick two-game swing with a Sunday matinee (4 p.m.) against the Edmonton Oil Kings.

don’t think maybe get noticed as much. His shift length is really good. He keeps himself fresh and I think he changes at the right times more often than not. It seems like such a small detail, but it’s an important one for us. “When he’s out there, he obviously players with some pretty good players and he takes advantage of that. But there are other details in his game that go unnoticed. We’re still trying to push him to be a real elite scorer and he’s getting closer.” Zaharichuk has spent the bulk of his time suiting up on the top line alongside Zak Zborosky and Matt Alfaro for coach Pierce, but Saturday in Spokane the extension of his eightgame point streak came after the Kootenay bench boss decided to shuffle his combinations around in the third period of play. The peppy 5-foot-8, 155-pound right winger hit Jared Legien with a beautiful pass at centre ice, springing the rookie in alone on Chiefs goaltender Tyson Verhelst for his third goal of the campaign. “You need that versatility,” Pierce said. “He needs to be able to manufacture things with other people. Teams are going to start to really narrow in on his line with Matt and Zak, so we’re going to have to get them away from some match ups. He’s going to have to make sure he’s putting guys in the right situation to capitalize. “That was a nice thing to see -- him generating some offense playing with different players, for sure. Hopefully that’s a confidence booster for him.” Zaharichuk is quick to say his confidence is up and how could it not be. Acquired Nov. 29 from the Kamloops Blazers in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft, the shifty forward has quickly shot up Kootenay Ice scoring charts. Even to the untrained eye, Jesse Zaharichuk’s on-ice contributions for the Kootenay Ice through the month of January have been pretty obvious. The 18-year-old native of Sherwood Park, Alta., is in the midst of an eight-game point streak, having collected three goals, eight assists and 11 points since Jan. 3. “It’s not just me, I’d say probably my line with Alfaro and Zbo-

NASHVILLE - John Scott has taken a shot at the NHL. Fans voted the 6-foot-8, 260-pound enforcer into the All-Star game, which is being played Sunday. Scott writes in a story posted Thursday by The Players Tribune that he got a call from the NHL, trying to talk him out of participating in the showcase event. According to Scott, someone with the NHL asked him: “Do you think this is something your kids would be proud of?” Scott writes that moment strengthened his decision to play in a 3-on-3 format with some of the best hockey players in the world. He has scored just five goals since his NHL debut in 2009, and the former Arizona player is currently playing in the minor leagues.

il 19) What begins as a calm day could end in a misunderstanding and/ or a power play. Slow down. A conversation with someone in the know will enlighten you about your options. You might act in the most unanticipated way and get shocked reactions. Tonight: TGIF with friends. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Reach out to a loved one who generally is the source of excellent feedback and powerful insight. A one-on-one conversation will reveal the next step to take. Someone at a distance could be stubborn and recalcitrant. You know what’s best for you. Tonight: Celebrate the weekend. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You see what others refuse to see. In a discussion with a friend, you might decide to buck someone else’s plan. Think twice before you act on this rebellious idea. You won’t be able to back out of a power play should you change your mind. Tonight: Fol-
low a friend’s lead. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Sometimes your instincts are very good. Take the day off or work from home, if possible. The unexpected could occur when you least expect it. Staying unavailable and out of sight will prove to be very helpful. Tonight: Let a party happen close to home or at your home. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Have a long-overdue conversation. You know how to say the truth without hurting somebody’s feelings. This person will be very appreciative to have your feedback. Don’t be so demanding about your schedule or about matters involving daily patterns. Tonight: Be impulsive. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Curb a possessive streak. Yes, you would like to have what someone else has. But you also need to look at what life already offers you. Be willing to make strong choices about your personal life. Tonight: Clear up a misunderstanding before it becomes a full-fledged outburst. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
Tundra
You’ll want to move forward with a project. You have a lot to share and discuss. Once you get feedback from a trusted friend, you might want to rethink your direction. A family member could become controlling if you don’t do what he or she wants. Tonight: In the moment. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) If you can, continue to maintain a low profile. You could have important information that needs to be kept hush-hush, but you might not be able to be sufficiently discreet at the present moment. A conversation about finances will be very uncomfortable. Tonight: Do your thing. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You have a serious tone this year, which often helps you to stay out of trouble. A fellow fire sign might try to convince you to join in on a fun adventure. This person is so wild that you might regret teaming up with him or her. Use good sense. Tonight: TGIF at a favorite place! CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) At present, you have a charming way of saying “no.” Feel free to do
just that if you feel as if someone does not serve your best interests. There is a strong likelihood that you could stumble into a very wild scenario if you’re not careful. Be the wise Goat. Tonight: Out on the town. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Be willing to look past the obvious. Take in the big picture. You might decide that you have made a faulty judgment. Be willing to say so, and others will respond well. You could be dealing with an emotional wound that you’re choosing not to share. Tonight: Do the unexpected. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) A loved one will make a gesture that is difficult to ignore. As a result, you might need to change your schedule and disappoint a friend. Remember that how you handle this situation is your call, and you can’t blame someone else for your choices. Tonight: Order in. BORN TODAY Writer Anton Chekhov (1860), philanthropist John D. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My fiance and I became engaged a year ago. He has many good qualities: He is really sweet most of the time, and he is a good provider. He takes me on nice trips and buys me lovely presents. He even rubs my feet and cooks for me. However, there are three bad qualities that give me grief. Like all couples, we argue now and then. But about once a week, we stay up all night arguing and can’t get to work the next day. He hangs out at the casino into the wee hours of the morning. Last week, he came home at 5:30 a.m. He says he does it just to make me angry. Two weeks ago, he left on Sunday afternoon and didn’t return until Monday morning. Then he wonders why I don’t trust him. The other problems are that he drinks heavily and he likes to gamble a lot. I’ve prayed that God will allow him to be the man I need and deserve. When we first started dating, I didn’t see any of these signs. I knew he frequented the casino, but it didn’t seem so bad. Now he says he will work on coming home so late if I stop fussing. I told him if it happens again, the relationship is over. But he refuses to stop gambling. Can he possibly change? Please help me. I love this man, but I must be insane to put up with this mess. -- Vicki in Vegas Dear Vicki: You are engaged to a man who is unlikely to change just because you want it and pray for it. Please don’t lopsidedly balance minor good points (he rubs your feet) with major difficulties. Gambling is an addiction. Is he in debt? Does he have enough money to keep losing it at the casino? Drinking is a different addiction and can affect his health, as well as your safety. Staying out all night is a trust issue, and arguing all night is totally unproductive. It is always a mistake to marry someone and expect him to change. That rarely happens. Please look into Gam-Anon (gam-anon.org) and Al-Anon (al-anon. org) for a better understanding of his behavior. Before marrying him, be sure you have a full report on your joint finances. And we strongly urge you to get premarital counseling. Your fiance sounds like an oncoming train wreck. Dear Annie: A few months ago, you printed a letter from “Marie,” who was looking for nursing home and assisted living facilities for family members who live out of state. You provided information only on nursing homes. For information on assisted living residences, please suggest that your readers contact Argentum (formerly the Assisted Living Federation of America) at argentum.org, or write us at 1650 King Street, Suite 602, Alexandria, VA 22314. -- Richard T. Moore, President, Massachusetts Assisted Living Facilities Association Dear Richard Moore: Thank you for this additional valuable information. We hope any of our readers who are searching for an appropriate residence will check this resource. CRAWFORD, Marjorie Joyce 1927 – 2016 Marjorie Joyce Crawford passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at the age of 88 years. Marjorie was born on May 5, 1927 in Brighton, Sussex England. She married Earle Crawford on April 27, 1945 and they were blessed with three sons and two daughters. Marjorie came to Canada to join her new husband after the Second World War ended. Marjorie and Earle were married in Brighton, England and she came to her new country as a war bride. Hew new life was on a small homestead near Ste. Rose Du Lac, Manitoba. Soon their daughter Marilyn was born, followed by Keith. After moving to Neepawa, Manitoba their family grew to include Melvyn, Deborah and Kevin. The family finally settled in Brandon, Manitoba. Marjorie moved to British Columbia after Earle passed away. She lived in Riondel first and then settled in Cranbrook, closer to her family. Marjorie loved to keep busy crocheting and created beautiful handiwork. Her tablecloths and doilies won red ribbons in many craft bazaars. Over the past several years, her time was spent creating afghans and toques which were donated the poor and homeless. She was also active in the New Apostolic Church and was known as Grandma to many of the children. Marjorie will be missed by her children; Marilyn Mauthe of Cranbrook, Keith (Dora) of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Deborah (Larry) Friesen of Sparwood and Kevin (Cindy) of Grande Prairie, Alberta. She also leaves 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

In Memory of Dwight Ecklund MCIP, RPP March 15, 1965 January 11, 2016 One must have the courage to stand up to your beliefs and not conform to the masses. A self-starter with a strong sense of individuality, initiative and integrity, Dwight was born March 15, 1965 at Central Butte, Sask. to Glen and Marlene (Dean) and big brother Calvin. He passed away suddenly at his home January 11, 2016 in the city he loved, Vancouver BC. A life-long learner, Dwight graduated from high school in Revelstoke, BC. He gathered some work experience before enrolling at the University of Waterloo. He graduated with a Certificate in Environmental Management, Masters of Public Policy and Bachelor of Environmental Studies (Honours). Dwight was a member of the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Planning Institute of BC. Dwight enjoyed his long-term employment with Moodie Consultants, making many life-long relationships. Education and Arts were a large part of Dwight’s life as were a “good coffee enjoyed with good company.” True to his calling as a professional planner, family events always had to have a plan before the day began. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Condolences can be left on Victory Memorial Gardens website: www.victoryfuneralcentre.ca. Memorial donations can be made to the Vancouver Public Library, Simon Fraser University library or the Knowledge Network in Dwight’s name.

continue to turn to DAILY NEWSPAPERS for breaking news, analysis of the day’s top events and entertaining content, according to the latest NADbank data. “Increased media competition, besides raising the editorial bar at dailies, doesn’t change one crucial fact”, says media buyer Bruce Claassen, CEO of GenesisVizeum (Toronto) and chair of Aegis Media Canada. “Daily newspapers offer the same benefits they always have: the ability to reach customers quickly. Only with a daily paper are you able to choose to do an ad and run with it in two days, and reach a sizable portion of the population, in a fairly mass, fairly broad and fairly fast way. That’s a set of qualities very few other media can match.” FOR DAILY DELIVERY OF YOUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER CALL US!
