ski, snowshoe and toboggan on the unplowed roads. Others might choose to do their thing on skis by climbing Cokely and going down the ski-hill runs. I’ve heard of people using their sleds (snowmobiles) to get to the top. The more adventurous might be into summitting Arrowsmith by one of several routes used in the summer. If you’re thinking about this, check out the avalanche danger before you go and be prepared for them. And the really adventurous can play in the Ice Box, with crampons, ice axes and ropes.
Now you don’t have to get all daring and everything to enjoy being out in the winter. It may not be your thing. Your idea of outdoor winter gear might be an umbrella. For you there are lowland places where the snow isn’t as deep. You can try walking the Log Train Trails, Kitsuksis Dike, or, further afield, along the paths along both Faber and Lakeshore Roads; and there are all those paths behind South Port too. And for those somewhere in the middle there are possibilities like skating on Loon Lake during a cold snap (make sure the ice is

summer months, the inlet, and the valley more generally, is generally pretty calm compared to the outside coast. Some might like the social side of the outdoors. The Alberni Valley Outdoor Club is still active in the winter. They have

ou might think otherwise, but an outdoor lifestyle need not be compromised in the cold dark days in February. In thinking about what to write about next month, I was daunted by the how much I live in twilight and the rain. Hibernating a little I guess. But you know, it is not always like that. For instance Christmas Day was a beauty! So really, if you are properly dressed, and have the right equipment you can have a fine time. Maybe it’s because there was once a ski hill there, but on this part of Vancouver Island, the most popular location for winter sports are Mounts Arrowsmith and Cokely and up the Cameron Valley. Pacific Seaplanes successfully landed their first plane at Centennial Pier on Jan. 28. The company announced that they would be offering scheduled seaplane service between Port Alberni and Vancouver earlier this month. Despite a postponed flight the day prior due to the weather, CEO Randy Hanna said that the inaugural flight in was a good one. “It was really smooth right up until right up by Cameron Lake so I flew past that and came around the other way,” he said. Hanna said that the decision to offer service to Port Alberni was easy to make after their experience flying to Bamfield. “Port Alberni, the undiscovered jewel on the west coast and under-served for all these years,” said Hanna. “We have a service that started in 2015 from Vancouver and Nanaimo out to Bamfield and the West Coast and it’s just such a beautiful place. Every time I flew by Alberni and looked down, I went ‘something’s missing.’” Pacific Seaplanes did a few charter flights last fall and Hanna said the response was overwhelming. “We were literally mobbed on the dock,

people were asking for tours and could we fly here or could we fly there. We said absolutely, went home and had a huddle about it, made the inquiries about it and discovered the community had been searching for an air service and we were only too happy to comply.” Hanna, who got his start flying for Pacific Rim Airlines out of Port Alberni, said that service out of Port Alberni will be key to connecting out to the west coast as well. “There hasn’t been a seaplane service here in Alberni for more than 25 years and one of the missing links as well has been from Port Alberni out to Bamfield, the Barkley Sound, Ucleulet, the fishing lodges and the
residents who live out there,” he said. Hanna added that he’s been overwhelmed with the phone calls and emails asking for more details about the service. Pacific Seaplanes will also be using Port Alberni as a base for tours around the region. “The other fantastic part of the new service will be the tours available from now on out of Alberni including a local panorama flight, a flight up to Della Falls, through Great Central Lake and a Pacific Tofino tour.” Pacific Seaplanes will initially offer one flight from Vancouver to Port Alberni (arriving at 11:35 a.m.) and one flight to the Vancouver
International Airport (departing at 2:30 p.m.). Flight duration is approximately 30-35 minutes and is weather-dependent, said Hanna. Flights will cost $199, taxes and fees included. Currently, Pacific Seaplanes will offer the daily flights on their Cessna 180 four-seater but hope to offer flights more often on bigger airplanes by April 1, 2016. “When we base an aircraft here, which will probably be as early as April 1, we’ll be adding two more round trip flights a day to Vancouver,” said Hanna. Though Hanna is confident that regular service won’t be a problem even with unpredictable coastal weather, he said
it’s something that they’ll have to work with—as they did by postponing the inaugural flight. “It was truly extraordinary weather [Jan. 27] and though we would love to be able to operate every flight on time, all the time, the west coast weather is unpredictable. We’re trained and we operate a safe service so there will be disruptions.” While currently the planes will land at Centennial Pier, they may switch over to the Port Alberni Port Authority’s new Somass fuel dock later. “We’re in discussions with the port about a new facility they’re planning over on Somass pier,” he said
but added that Pacific Seaplanes has a yearslong agreement to operate at Centennial Pier. Port authority director of public relations and business development Dave McCormick said that they hope to have Pacific Seaplanes fueling at their Somass fuel dock by the end of May 2016. As far as office space goes, Hanna said that talks are underway to collocate with West Coast Aquatic in their soon to be opened stewardship centre at Harbour Quay. “Over time we’ll possibly look at locating our administrative offices in Port Alberni with more jobs and more service.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com twitter.com/alberninews
The Port Alberni RCMP is asking the public to be vigilant after several incidents of ‘peeping toms’ have been reported on residential properties. Three home owners told police they have seen a person, believed to be male, on their property late at night staring into windows. The first incident reported was on Dec. 7 in the 3000 block of Alberni Highway. The most recent occurred on Jan. 11 in the Cherry Creek area. The RCMP is investigating and says residents should follow the following safety tips: • call the police if you see a stranger in your yard • make sure your yard is well lit— sensor lights can help • keep windows and doors locked and ladders secured. If you have any information, call the RCMP at 250-723-2424 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8437.

LIFE Continue the year with balance, strength SANDRA GENTLEMAN Healthy Living eliminated from the daily intake. This can lead to weakened bones over years due to osteoporosis which makes individuals more prone to fractures. Many people don’t realize how important it is to ensure adequate amounts of calcium-rich foods
and fluids, plus vitamin D, protein and weight-bearing exercise for good balance and bone health. Osteoporosis has been called a pediatric disease with geriatric consequences. Adequate amounts of daily calcium and vitamin D are essential
from early in life and continues to be necessary throughout the life cycle into the senior years. Eighty percent of people over 50 who fracture bones have osteoporosis, with many not realizing they were at increased risk for thin bones. Like a building, our skeleton endures wear and tear overtime, which can eventually cause structural defects. Our bones have a ‘maintenance crew’ with cells called
Port Alberni Association for Community Living
PAACL NEWS
PAACL - SERVICES FOR COMMUNITY LIVING The Port Alberni Association for Community Living (PAACL) will be opening the doors at new program facility to enhance services to the community. The new site for “Services for Community Living” will be located at 4521 Dogwood Street. With program and staffing levels increasing, another program site was required to help meet the growing needs of the community and the agency. The main floor of the Dogwood site will be the administration-base for the Independent Living and Self-Help Skills program staff. The facility’s downstairs will be utilized for the multiple programs PAACL has to offer such as skill development programs, parent and tot groups, infant massage, participant workshops, parent education, staff education, etc. The program space will potentially be offered and/or available to small community groups for meeting and small functions in the future. PAACL is also able to celebrate the fact that the entire facility is fully accessible thanks in large part to the funding received through the Government of Canada’s Enabling Accessibility Fund in the amount of $39,000. With the provided funding, PAACL was able to construct three wheelchair accessible washrooms, automatic doors and a large, beautiful wheel chair ramp. To celebrate the opening of this renewed facility, PAACL will be hosting an Open House for all to come and see on Wednesday, February 10th, 2016 from 1:00pm – 3:00pm. Light snacks and refreshments will be available.
osteoclasts that remove any damaged or weakened bone and builder cells called osteoblasts that fill in the crevices with material that hardens to form new bone. This cycle of the bone re-modelling process takes about three to four months to complete in a healthy young adult. As people age, the maintenance crew of osteoclasts and osteoblasts become less efficient at working together and the osteoclasts remove old bone faster than it is able to be rebuilt. Plus, with age, calcium absorption is reduced, so, it’s more difficult for the osteoblasts to have the necessary ingredients to rebuild. Adults need 10001200 mg of calcium per day, which is approximately three servings of calciumrich foods and fluids daily to get enough. Foods and fluids, such as yogurt, milk, fortified soy, rice and almond milk, cheese, canned fish with bones (salmon, sardines, herring,
etc.) and almonds all provide good sources of calcium. If digesting lactose (naturally occurring milk sugar) is an issue, a few tips to improve absorption without symptoms of gas, bloating and diarrhea would be to take small amounts of dairy with other foods throughout the day instead of a lot at once. Also, yogurt is generally well tolerated due to the active culture (probiotics) and hard cheeses are usually tolerated. Plus, there are lactase enzyme pills and drops that can help digest the lactose sugar in milk. Vitamin D is a fatsoluble vitamin that is also required to build stronger bones. It increases absorption of calcium and helps the function of muscles, which improves balance and decreases likelihood of falling. Vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin, since it comes from the sun. The sun’s rays cause a reaction
in our skin to produce vitamin D that can be used for bone and muscle health. In Canada, because of the latitude of a northern climate, people don’t get as much sun as required for vitamin D; and when we apply sunscreen in the summer, that disables the skin’s ability to produce vitamin D from exposure to sun’s rays. Additionally, as individuals age, the skin’s ability to make vitamin D decreases and for all of these reasons, many Canadians are not getting enough vitamin D and have a deficiency. There are very few food sources of vitamin D. In fact, it is impossible for adults to get sufficient vitamin D from diet alone, no matter how good their nutrition. Therefore, Osteoporosis Canada recommends routine vitamin D supplementation for all Canadian adults year round. Continued / A20

ig changes took place last year for the Alberni Armada Wrestling Invitational and after a year back at ADSS, the event is ready to go again— bigger and better. The 33rd Annual Alberni Armada Invitational Wrestling Tournament runs Feb. 5–6 in the ADSS gyms. In an effort to connect more closely with their roots at the high school the Invitational was moved back to ADSS last year and it proved a great success. The Alberni Invitational is widely considered the most prestigious high school wrestling tournament in B.C. and has received recognition across Canada. The tournament started in 1980 and has run every year except the four years the local wrestling group hosted the BC High School Championships. That means 37 straight years that this dedicated group of volunteers have run a major wrestling tournament in the Alberni Valley. The event was held at the old ADSS school from 1982 to 1994 before moving to Glenwood in 1995 and then the Multiplex in 2003 as it got so large. “We are extremely proud of the history and traditions our wrestling program has established over the past 37 years,” tournament co-chair

HONOUR WOMEN ON OUR CURRENCY
C
anada’s banknotes are polymer, counterfeit-resistant, holographic and modern. And they’re hopelessly behind the times. Canadian women need to be represented on Canadian currency. It’s a notion that was put forward by a citizens’ movement in Victoria and has now been championed by Nanaimo-Ladysmith MP Sheila Malcolmson, the NDP’s critic for the status of women. The lack of women on our bills wasn’t always this concerning. Our $50 notes used to feature the Famous Five and Thérèse Casgrain, advocates for women’s voting rights. But those ladies have long since been replaced by a decidedly masculine-looking Arctic icebreaker. With the removal of the human-rights heroines, that leaves us with an anonymous clip-art medical researcher on the back of the $100 and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the $20. The problem won’t solve itself. After the Queen’s passing – long may she live – the monarchy will be headed by king after king after king. And although we fully expect Canada will elect female prime ministers over the coming decades, it takes a long time for partisan politicians to become respected historical figures. It’s only right and it’s only fair that women appear on our money. Our country’s cabinet is 50 per cent women because it’s 2016, and other institutions should be similarly scrutinized. There are countless candidates whom we can honour on our banknotes. If worthy women don’t come to mind, then we aren’t looking hard enough. Their stories are under-represented in history texts, but of course women have always been here, building our country, our culture and our identity right alongside the men. Our polymer bills, however durable, will wear out, and we will need to print new ones, and we should always try to find ways to celebrate different segments of our society. Leaders, pioneers, artists, thinkers and differencemakers. Heroes and heroines. — NANAIMO NEWS BULLETIN

entral 1 Credit Union’s Bryan Yu is among a number of economists predicting B.C.’s economy will expand. He forecasts a threeper-cent hike this year. This would be impressive in the context of global financial upheaval and reeling stock markets, but Yu goes further. He expects our province will top the rest of the country in economic growth, ironically assisted by the lame loonie. That, Yu reasons, will benefit B.C. due to increased exports and a hike in tourism. Yu anticipates the provincial economy will keep being aided by low interest rates as well as “household demand and housing investment.” He expects this in spite of
depressed commodity values in the energy and mining sectors. You can now buy a barrel of oil for less than it costs for a bucket of KFC chicken. Regardless, Yu expects In a similar chat, Mayor B.C.’s economy will keep Mike by Ruttan was growing three per positively cent into 2017 and bullish beyond, about elevated by heightened the city’s business growth. investment associated with major project construction. Part of this rosy forecast is predicated on at least one LNG terminal being built in B.C. That is no guarantee, although Premier Christy Clark acts like the LNG future for B.C. is so bright she’s gotta wear shades. Economic forecasts, our
premier’s endless series of newsless photo ops and her unchanging LNG assurances must be taken with more than a pinch of salt. Clark, in fact, seems more like the CEO of a PR firm than the leader of a province. While she dismisses opposition to her government’s projects by glibly referring to the “forces of no,” we should remember that even when jobs are created and the economy grows, not everyone benefits equally. Unemployment and child poverty in the Alberni Valley are more pronounced than provincial averages. MP Gord Johns and MLA Scott Fraser both understand how important job creation is. In recent conversations, they expressed optimism about opportunities for Port Alberni. In a similar chat, Mayor Mike Ruttan was positively bullish about the city’s growth. Continued / A20

Grand Opening and Grand Style Sonja Drinkwater has her eye on the local social scene and she welcomes your input. Let her know of any celebrations you’d like to share with our community.
SONJA DRINKWATER
• Bear Watch Bistro located on scenic Call 250-723-6399 Victoria Quay next to Capelli held their creative@albernivalleynews.com Grand Opening on Saturday Jan. 30th. Mayor Mike Ruttan came by to cut the ribbon with owner Angel Veller and staff. Angel would like people to know that it is the same great food that they had at Artisan Angel plus some new tasty menu items. Many thanks to everyone that came by to partake in the festivities.
Above: Bear Watch Bistro owner Angel Veller and Mayor Mike Ruttan share in the cutting of the ribbon while staff, from left to right Robyn Hesby, Em Margoreeth, and Crystal Cooley watch.
• The Jane Austen Festival will be here before you know it and many ladies have taken out their needle and thread and are busy creating a style of the era. If you would like to attend one of their workshops call 778-421-1916. They also have some already made dresses for sale if you want to join in the fun and beat the Guinness Book of World Records.
Karen Smith takes on the tedious task of redesigning a dress to fit in the 1800’s style.

When someone you love becomes a memory the memory becomes a treasure
EDWARD (Ed) KLUS It is with heavy hearts and much sadness, that the family of Edward (Ed) Klus announces that he passed away from complications from Parkinson disease in the early morning hours of Saturday, January 23, 2016 at West Coast General Hospital. He was 87 years old. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Anne, his sons: Ken, James (Marie) and Len. His grandchildren: Kyle (Leanne), Kandice and Chase. His sister Vicky Jerstad, brother and sisters-in-law: Helen (Chris), Verna, Peter (Sharon), Ted (Flo), Irene and Rose (Paul), many nieces, nephews and many friends. Ed was born on July 24, 1928 in Olds, Alberta. At eight months old his family moved to Trail, then Kelowna, Pitt Meadows and then Alberni where Ed went to school until he was 14 years old. Ed then went to live with his mother in Prince Rupert, where he worked in a grocery store until he was 16 years old. At this point World War II was on and he wanted to join the Canadian Navy. He was too young so he and his friend went to Portland, Oregon where they joined the American Merchant Marines. They worked on the ships until the war was over. Ed then transferred to a supply ship that serviced all the light houses up and down the coast. After that he worked on the Princess Louise Tour Ships that sailed to Alaska from Vancouver. Ed met Anne in Vancouver while working on the ships. One weekend he went to visit his dad in Port Alberni, got a job with West Coast Freight, came back after two weeks, married Anne on September 17, 1955 in Vancouver, moved to Port Alberni, then got a job as a pile driver for 43 years with MacMillan Bloedel and remained in Port Alberni for the rest of his life. Ed was quite the character; he had a great sense of humour, loved to fish, hunt, camp, have a rye and 7 up and tell a story or two. He spent a lot of time fishing in the canal, catching the big one on his boat the Sea Fox with his wife, children, grandchildren and friends. A favourite pastime for Ed was watching curling and hockey in his big recliner and being a season ticket holder for the Bulldogs. Ed was a member of the Elks Club, Royal Canadian Legion and I.O.F. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts and coached hockey. Ed and Anne loved to square dance, which they did for over 25 years. They also played cribbage, bowled and curled.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at the Chapel of Memories with a tea to follow at the Lawn Bowling Club. If so desired donations in Ed’s memory may be made to Ty Watson House (Alberni Hospice Society) or a charity of your choice. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Van Zyl, Dr. Williams and all the nurses at West Coast General Hospital for the excellent care that Ed received. In Ed’s words, “the care I’m receiving is amazing.

Cindy passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 in Port Alberni at the age of 57 years. Predeceased by her father Arnold and sister Karen. Cindy is survived by boyfriend of 27 years Greg; son Glenn; siblings Connie (Tony), Brian, and Alan (Tammy); nieces and nephews as well as other extended family. Cindy was a devoted, doting mother and loved raising her family. She was an advocate for women’s safety and became a women’s counselor at the Transition House. Cindy was a lover of gardening and had a green thumb for growing vegetables and beautiful flower beds. Cindy had a huge heart and cared deeply for all animals, especially birds (which she would feed tirelessly), deer, raccoons and her biggest love, cats. calcium and vitamin D, adequate and reasonable amount of protein in meals is part of the bone and muscle equation. Including two to three servings of protein-rich foods daily will provide the building blocks for maintenance of bone and muscles. Poultry, fish, beef, pork, eggs, soybeans, legumes, nuts and seeds can offer good quality protein in the daily diet. Weight-bearing exercise is imperative to maintain bone density and muscle
strength. Lifting weights becomes more important with age due to loss of lean muscle tissue that accelerates overtime. Stronger muscles means denser bones. With the new year comes new health goals and activities. Instead of focusing on the number on the scale and losing weight, aim to gain muscle and bone density to become a stronger, fit and healthier you.
