Motorcycle club president sounds off on noise complaints

SHERI REGNIER Trail Times

The sound of a motorcycle passing through a neighbourhood is fleeting, says the president of a local riding group. “What about a leaf blower or when your neighbour mows his lawn for an hour,” questions Ian McLeod from the West Kootenay

Teck Metals appeared in Rossland Provincial Court on Monday, facing fines following two separate chemical spills into the Columbia River. According to the provincial court registry, the company was expected to plead guilty to multiple counts of depositing deleterious substance as well as failing to comply with a permit and introduction of business-related waste into the environment. Teck Metals was also listed as “FA” (first appearance) on three additional charges stemming from one of the incidents. The company was charged under the Environmental Management and Fisheries Act in May. Teck Trail Operations withheld comment pending a conclusion of court proceedings. Court was still in session at press time, and a continuance was expected through to Tuesday afternoon. Watch the Trail Times for further developments later this week. “We take these incidents very seriously,” Carol Vanelli Worosz, Teck’s community engagement leader, told the Trail Times following the charges. “A full investigation took place immediately following both incidents and changes to equipment and operating procedures took place to prevent reoccurrence.” Both cases date back two years. The

Road Runners. “I just don’t see where people are coming from targeting motorcycles - is there no other loud noises at any other time?” McLeod was referring to recent actions by a group of residents from Kaslo to Nakusp that he says single out those who like to hit the road on their iron horse. “What about the semis going by

your house on the highway, or diesel trucks pulling trailers,” McLeod queried. “Diesel trucks starting up are as loud or louder than some bikes. I mean you are right on the road, I just don’t get it.” Fed up with loud motorcycles passing through their communities, a petition circulated through the West Kootenay region asking local governments to lobby the

first being Dec. 22 (2013) when water containing zinc dust overflowed into a drain then the effluent was released into the river at an outfall point. Teck reported initial sampling indicated 250 kilograms (kg) of the heavy metal was detected compared to the daily limit of 175 kg. That concentration exceeds the maximum permitted level by about 40 per cent. The plant’s monitoring system detected the incident and operations were immediately shut down to correct the source, Vanelli Worosz said at the time. “While the cause was corrected in about 30 minutes, the plants didn’t restart until the following day,” she explained. “We waited for confirmation from our monitoring that the incident had been completely addressed.” One month later, the second spill occurred. On Jan. 28, 2014, up to 25,000 litres of an alkaline chemical solution was discharged into Trail’s domestic sewer line, which leads to the regional district’s sewage treatment plant for eventual released into Bear Creek and the Columbia River. A complete review of Teck Trail Operations’ sanitary sewer lines was undertaken to confirm all piping configurations were accurate, and Vanelli Worosz confirmed the containment area drain system was isolated and permanently disconnected from the sanitary sewer system. Trail operations has three outfalls to the river that are monitored to detect and allow response to abnormal readings. province to enforce or tighten existing noise laws. board listened to a delegation of petitioners and agreed to contact the B.C. Minister of Justice (Suzanne Anton) about the need to enforce existing noise laws written in the Motor Vehicle Act. The regional board supported the request and went a step further by agreeing to ask the Association of Kootenay and Boundary Local Governments (AKBLG) to also write a letter to the minister. McLeod contends that decision could come back to bite those small communities because riders bring in plenty of tourism dollars and raise considerable money for local charities during runs through those areas. “As president of the West Kootenay Road Runners, I would recommend to my riding group, if they are going to start going after us as motorcycles riders,” he began. “Then I would suggest we just stay away from those communities and not support them.” Besides bike runs for charity, McLeod’s group often gathers on the weekend for a ride through the valley, trying out different restaurants, as well as stopping for gas and other incidentals. “Ninety per cent of our runs are for charity,” he continued. “Weekends we might go out 20 at a time, and when we stop, we spend $50 to $100 in those communities,” he added. “It all trickles down, so this could hurt those small businesses and charities.” Another factor to consider, McLeod points out, is the Kootenay Loop is rated as one of the best motorcycle rides in North America by popular magazines like Cycle World, Iron Horse and RoadRUNNER. “Why I am upset is they are putting us all in the same boat,” he explained. “You’ll meet people from all over the world riding in the Kootenay area because it is listed as one of the top ten places to ride motorcycles. “This is tourism, and they are spending money in hotels, on food and buying tourist stuff, ” McLeod added. “People, what are you doing to yourselves with this petition?” The reason why some motorcycles are louder than others, is because the exhaust system has been modified such as a baffle plate removed, or the muffler cut out or even disconnected from the engine. It’s those roaring exhaust systems that are heard and felt over a wide distance, sometimes enough to rattle windows. The Motor Vehicle Act does specify the collective noise level of engine and exhaust system for a motorcycle cannot exceed 91 decibels. The act also prohibits tampering with mufflers, like remov-

Some motorcycles are louder than others, which prompted a petition in the New Denver area requesting officials enforce excessive noise laws. ing baffle plates, to rev up the sound. Petition aside, noise laws are already being enforced, according to RCMP Cpl. Chad Badry. “The petition is asking the government to deal with this problem,” Badry, from the Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU), told the Trail Times. “There’s this rhetoric that seems to be going around that police are not interested in enforcing excessive noise from motorcycles because it bring tourists to the area.” That is not definitely not the case, he reiterated. “I’ve got no qualms about enforcing it and I am not alone,” he said. “The rest of the officers in IRSU and the highway traffic unit are all like minded - we enforce those laws.” Local RCMP patrols no longer carry decibel metres because readings can be contested in court. Factors such as wind, passing cars, even birds tweeting, can affect ambient air thus the accuracy of a decibel test. Instead, police use discretion. If a bike is extraordinarily loud, the rider is issued a $109 fine. Typically, a notice of order will be written under one of three categories.

Those range from immediately taking the bike off road until it’s repaired, ordering an inspection within 30 days, or giving the person up to two weeks to fix a defect before the local detachment signs off the repair. Badry says riders generally comply with notice of orders, because if they don’t, a $598 non-compliance ticket will follow. At the end of the day, unnecessary noise is part of the RCMP mandate, said the corporal. “It’s important to get that message out there and that we do enforce it,” Badry added. “But we do have to balance it with our other mandates, some that are obviously very high priority because they cause serious injuries or fatalities- such as impaired driving by drug or alcohol, distracted driving and seat belts.” The AKBLG is the local government association that represents municipalities and electoral areas of the southeastern B.C. The area includes the Regional Districts of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB), Central Kootenay (RDCK), East Kootenay (RDEK) as well as the Town of Golden and the Village of Valemount.

Red Mountain Resort responds to death of skier VALERIE ROSSI Trail Times

Red Mountain’s general manager is sending condolences to the family of a man who succumbed to injuries after skiing at the resort Jan. 24. “We are deeply saddened by this loss and our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends,” noted Don Thompson in a media statement. The GM and president of Red Mountain Resort presses

safety is always paramount and continues to be the main focus, incident aside. “It’s a big, big mountain and we’re always looking at our safety,” he told the Times Monday. “It’s nothing that an incident (like this) is a catalyst for, it’s ongoing.” The BC Coroners Service confirmed that Paul Omegna, 49, of Lake Washington, Washington State, was rushed to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital but could not be resuscitated Sunday,

Jan. 24. Ski patrol found him unresponsive at about 4 p.m. that day after he had been reported missing when he failed to meet up with companions. Red reports the skier fell into a “marked natural depression near the Motherlode Chair Lift” and was tended to by ski patrol and mountain staff, who were later supported by paramedics and doctors. “We remind our guests that natural hazards do exist

such as tree wells, drainage areas, and rock faces and to ski together when venturing off groomed runs,” noted Thompson. “We also caution everyone to watch for markings in all areas and to ski and ride with due care.” No further details are available at this time, as the RCMP and BC Coroners Service continue to investigate the death. Red notes the last time a guest succumbed to injuries on the mountain was a cardiac arrest about six years ago.

Warfield set to open nominations for council seat VALERIE ROSSI Trail Times

Warfield residents interested in municipal politics are asked to step up to fill a vacant position on village council. Allana Ferro, senior administrative clerk, has been appointed chief election officer and the village is preparing for nominations mid-month, following the resignation of long-

time councillor Tom Milne. Interested residents will have from Feb. 23 to March 4 to fill out nomination papers and ready for a potential byelection, which would add approximately $4,000 to the village’s 2016 budget, confirmed Jackie Patridge, village corporate officer. If competition comes forward, then advance polls will be set for March 30 and April

6 with Election Day scheduled for April 9. Voters will be asked to drop ballots at the village office from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on these days. With three years left in the four-year civic role, Warfield is required to fill the empty councillor seat by acclamation or through a byelection if more than one person applies for the position. Patridge couldn’t confirm any interest at this

time, just that she’s “heard rumours.” Milne left his post last month after a rocky start to his first term with a new council. His experience started on village council in the late 1970s; he later found his voice on the Board of Variance for 13 years before getting back to his councillor seat in 2008. Urban drug ghettos aren’t working

ommunities around B.C. are struggling to cope with the continued influx of what politicians call “homelessness,” a term that suggests the problem can be solved merely by providing more homes. Taxpaying citizens see the daily reality behind the soothing euphemisms – mainly transients squatting in parks and “tent cities” blighted by drug abuse and crime, and “homeless” shelters that fill up as soon as they open. They worry that the continued costly supply of supports only invites more arrivals, particularly in the gentle climate of southwestern B.C. Their worries are well founded. In Abbotsford, a 40-bed “temporary weather shelter” made from industrial camp trailers opened in December with a $450,000 operating grant from B.C. Housing. It was full in 10 days. Abbotsford Police Chief Bob Rich told city council in January that his bike officers don’t recognize most of the shelter occupants from their constant patrols of local tent camps, the largest of which has been on a city-owned roadside site since 2013.

a 15-year maintenance commitment and a cop assigned to each one in an effort to contain the chaos inside. Coleman brags endlessly about the great job he has done, but how is that actually working? A new study by Simon Fraser University researchers provides a more objective assessment. Tracking 433 mentally ill homeless adults over 10 years, the study found the concentration of low-rent accommodation, food handouts, street outreach and medical supports resulted in “significant personal decline rather than recovery, as evidenced by their involvement in the criminal justice system, large increases in acute care and prolonged homelessness.” The rate of people arriving in this service-intensive hellhole has tripled in the last 10 years, a finding similar to studies of concentrated services in New York, Sao Paulo and Osaka. It’s a cautionary tale for other urban communities where this failed containment model is proposed. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

What’s new on Netflix Canada, Shomi, CraveTV in February THE C ANADIAN PRESS A monthly look at what’s scheduled to be added to the catalogues of streaming services Netflix Canada, Shomi and CraveTV: NETFLIX: The most-successful foreign-language film in American history is getting a sequel. Netflix acquired the rights to “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny,” which premieres on the streaming service on Feb. 26. The original film won four Oscars and took home the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. Netflix also financed another sequel (of sorts) that premieres on the same day. “Fuller House” is a 13-episode series that features most of the stars of the original family sitcom that aired in the late ‘80s and early-to-mid ‘90s. Only MaryKate and Ashley Olsen opted not to return for the Netflix reunion. CRAVETV: Fans of Netflix’s “Making a Murderer” may want to give “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst” a try next. The HBO true crime documentary series explores the 1982 disappearance of Durst’s wife, the murder of his friend Susan Berman in 2000, and the 2001 death of his neighbour Morris Black. The six-episode series begins streaming on Feb. 12. SHOMI: The third season of the critically acclaimed Cold War drama “The Americans” is available starting on Feb. 26. The season kicks off with the undercover KGB couple, played by Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys, facing more pressure to recruit their daughter Paige as a secret agent to spy on the U.S. government.

LETTERS & OPINION

L’Bears Health Foods

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Now open in a

The community takes another hit Well friends and neighbours after the Jan. 28 article in the Globe and Mail (‘Teck Metals to plead guilty over pollution in Trail BC.’) our fate is pretty much sealed. The smelter here in Trail pumps about $200 million into the local economy of which just about all leaves Trail. The majority of employees, contractors, their employees and suppliers live outside the city of Trail. At least once a year Teck has a management update with its employees and one of the first statements made is “Teck Resources operates the smelter within the city limits with pub-

lic’s permission to do so”. Or the residents of Trail issue the “social license”. It is time to maybe rethink why we need to keep putting up with all this crap for the benefit of everyone else but us. There much conversation about why Nelson and Castlegar move ahead, that’s simple, they don’t have a smelter or a landfill in the middle of their city. They don’t get crapped on every few years in the national media. Yes folks we have been through this before only this time there is no coming back. The Globe and Mail has made clear that Trail is no place to be.

It is time for Teck to move the smelter elsewhere or maybe the political leaders of the communities (Nelson, Castlegar, Beaver Valley) that benefit the most from the operation of the smelter make a “business case” to the people of Trail for continuing to issue the “social license.” To the mayor of Castlegar, of the above $200 million a $150 million of it goes into your surrounding community why don’t you go talk to the guy that owns all the car lots and ask him how many cars he will sell if Teck shuts the smelter down. Energy East pipeline needs leadership L’Bears Health Foods

An editorial from the Red Deer Advocate Political stripes of any kind do not really bother me. People have their reasons for their leanings, and if they’re willing to stand up for them, all the better. What does bother is blatant hypocrisy. When a mayor of a major city in a province that received $9.5 billion in equalization payments last year refuses to let a pipeline pass through his region, asking “What’s in it for us?” well Denis Coderre, you are a giant hypocrite. You effectively are biting the hand that feeds you. “TransCanada’s project includes important risks for our environment and too few benefits for our economy,” the Montreal mayor said as he and the leaders of 82 other communities rejected the Energy East pipeline project. It’s also rich considering he did not see the environmental harm that comes from dumping one third of Montreal’s raw sewage into the St. Lawrence River this past October. The fact is, the multi-billion dollar pipeline project would create thousands of jobs across the country while being built -- something that looks pretty good during a recession -- and make the country more self efficient in bringing its resources to the world market. Coderre cemented his opposition in an op-ed on the weekend, stating: “In a context where the

Earth’s nations are talking about even more restrictive measures to limit (greenhouse gas) emissions, we cannot justify the construction of a pipeline, which also delivers more risks than real profits.” The reality is, the pipeline is the most environmentally sound and safest option to move oil across the country. The pipeline would move more than one million barrels of heavy oil a day to Atlantic Canada, where it can be shipped out. The other option is the slow process of trucking it to the coast or loading it on a train. It would also lessen our reliance on the U.S. to get our own product to the world. But why should we expect Quebec to come to any other result while they import most of their oil from staunch environmental and humane countries like Saudi Arabia and Algeria? The Globe and Mail reported in 2013 the province could save up to $3 billion a year by buying Alberta’s oil as opposed to importing it from Europe or Africa. This is akin to an antihunting advocate trying to tear down hunters who hunt for meat when they can just get it from the store like everyone else. I don’t think they really process how that equalization money is made that they so eagerly expect from Alberta and Saskatchewan. But I believe this goes to a larger problem, and that’s leadership on the issue.

We have heard for months that the Alberta NDP government and the federal Liberal government are on the cusp of getting pipelines built that the governing Conservatives never could. I really must question this now. U.S. president Barak Obama ended hopes of the Keystone XL pipeline. It was just days after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made it a point of his first phone call to Obama to announce he was pulling our fighter jets out of the fight against ISIS. In Davos, Switzerland last week at the World Economic Forum, not only was natural resource minister Jim Carr not invited to join the Canadian representatives, Trudeau made this now famous statement: “My predecessor wanted you to know Canada for its resources, I want you to know Canadians for our resourcefulness.” A diversification of the economy is absolutely needed, especially if we can become greener along the way. It is one of the many reasons the Conservatives in Alberta finally were voted out, because of their seeming refusal to do this. But diversification does not mean turning your back on oil completely. Unfortunately this whole situation has the possibility of turning into an us-versus-them scenario and further increasing the divide between Eastern and Western Canada, when in times of economic uncertainty we really need to be coming together.

Vees take two from Smokies, clinch Interior JIM BAILEY

Times Sports Editor

A playoff spot is slowly slipping away from the Trail Smoke Eaters after losing a home-andhome series with the Penticton Vees on the weekend. The Vees beat the Smoke Eaters in Penticton on Friday, 6-1, and Vees forward Scott Conway closed in on 50 goals, netting a hat trick in an exciting 4-3 victory in Trail on Saturday. The win clinches the BCHL’s Interior division title for the Vees, its fifth consecutive. The losses dropped the Smokies five points behind the Vernon Vipers for the final playoff spot, as the Snakes split their weekend games, beating the Salmon Arm Silverbacks 3-2 at home Friday before dropping a 6-1 decision to the Backs on Saturday. Trail (19-27-0-2) will face division rival Salmon Arm tonight looking to get back on track, and the path to the playoffs doesn’t get any easier when they host the Interior division’s second place West Kelowna Warriors in two matches on the weekend. “If you take Penticton out of the equation, Salmon Arm could win our league, Kelowna could win our league, and we’re play-

ing three of the top teams probably in all of Canada, given the strength of what they have on paper, and so that’s our challenge,” said Deschenes. Despite the lopsided loss Friday, the effort in front of the home crowd was apparent on Saturday as the Smokies skated with the number-two ranked team in the nation right down to the final buzzer. But it was Conway who tallied the winning goal on the powerplay at 6:41 of the middle frame for his 49th goal of the season. Vees’ forward Mitch Brooks made a move to the front of the net, but the puck rolled off his stick and right to Conway who ripped a shot underneath the crossbar of Trail goalie Bailey MacBurnie for a 4-2 lead. Trail forward Nolan Redler opened the scoring, firing a shot from the right-wing goal-line that jumped off Zach Driscoll’s pad at the near-post and in at 10:49. Tempers flared late in the first when Redler and the Vees’ Darius Davidson dropped the gloves with the five-foot-nine Redler acquitting himself well with the six-foot-one Davidson. Penticton broke through in the second, scoring twice in just 20-seconds at the beginning of the period. First, Conway bat-

ted the puck out of the air for the equalizer 59-seconds into the middle stanza for his 47th. On the next shift, Gerrie took a drop pass and fired a shot from the right-circle that beat MacBurnie far side. Trail got it back when Kyle Star banked a shot off a defenceman and past Driscoll on the short-side at 3:37 to make it 2-2, but the Vees regained the lead when Nic Jones set up Conway in the circle and he quickly roofed his shot at 4:30 for his 48th, then finished the Vees scoring less than two minutes later for the 4-2 lead. Another tilt for Redler erupted in the opening seconds of the third that saw the Winchester, Mass. native take on six-foot-two Easton Brodzinski. Both skaters were sent off with automatic game misconducts, but the fiery forward gave the Smokies a boost as Trail closed the two-goal gap. Kale Howarth scored his 10th of the season at 10:31, taking a pass from Star and wiring it off the shoulder of Driscoll to make it 4-3. Trail had its chances to tie it late and bounced one off the crossbar with seconds to play, but the Vees held on for their 41st victory of the season and another division title. CONTINUED ON A9

The Beaver Valley Nitehawks overcame a lot of adversity on the weekend, much of it self-inflicted, but managed to earn 3-of-4 points in a pair of home games. Following a 5-5 tie with the Creston Valley Thundercats Friday night, the Hawks rebounded for a 4-3 comefrom-behind victory over Grand Forks on Saturday. “It was weird, I’ve been saying for the last couple weeks that our defensive zone coverage needs to be a lot better, but thankfully our goaltending has been outstanding,” said Hawks coach Terry Jones, who celebrated his 50th birthday last week. “I don’t know if our team is just relaxing a bit in our defensive zone but we haven’t been very good and the quality chances we’ve give up and the number of shots we’ve given up in the last while has increased.” The Nitehawks fell behind 3-1 to the Border Bruins Saturday, before coming back and winning it on a Braden Fuller goal with 1:17 to play in regulation. The goal was Fuller’s second of the night, 26th of the season and 57th point to lead all Hawks in scoring. “After being pretty low on Friday, and blowing that lead, we came back and had some really great performances that got that win. Particularly Braden Fuller and Devin Nemes were guys that really stood up and played some inspired hockey for us,” said Jones. Despite outshooting Grand Forks 17-9 in the first period, Beaver Valley trailed 2-1 heading into the second. The Bruins Bryson Yee opened the scoring at 8:11, but Fuller tied it 57 seconds later with assists to Tylers, Ghiradosi and Hartman. Grand Forks’ Dylan Haney tallied his 16th on the power play at 5:01 of the first, and beat Hawks goalie Brett Clark for his 17th less than a minute into the second period to give the Bruins a 3-1 lead. Nemes brought the Hawks to within one when he took a Nolan Percival pass and wired it by Grand Forks goalie Anthony Galliart at 13:28 of the second period for his 12th of the season and send it to the third down 3-2. Less than three minutes into the final frame, Percival then drew the Nitehawks even, finishing a nice set up from Nemes and Dylan Heppler.

“Grand Forks has a good team,” said Jones. “We knew three months ago, that this was a different team than they’ve been in the past. They compete hard and they are very well coached, and very well structured and we respect them a lot.” For the first time this season, the Bruins outshot the Nitehawks, 39-35, and had a 19-9 advantage in the second period. But Clark was outstanding in net, shutting the door after GF went up 3-1, as B.V. found themselves shorthanded on five occasions, while enjoying just one power play. “He (Clark) had a really good game, he kept us in it when he needed to, and so did Tallon (Kramer). It was a 5-5 game on Friday, and I think the chances in that game, the disparity in good quality chances, was clearly in Creston’s favour even when it was 4-0.” The victory over Grand Forks was a good response to Friday’s match where B.V. blew a 4-0 second period lead, giving up five straight goals to trail the Thundercats 5-4 very late in the third period. But just before the lights went out, Sam Swanson scored with 11 seconds left on the clock to salvage a point for the Nitehawks. “We had a 4-0 lead and then all of a sudden we started to do things the wrong way,” said Jones. Fuller had two goals and two assists for the Hawks, Tyler Ghiradosi had a two-point night with a goal and a helper, and Nemes scored the other Hawks marker. B.V. outshot Creston 47-42 and were 0-for-5 on the power play, while Creston was 0-for-4. The Hawks remain atop the Neil Murdoch division with 67 points, nine points up on the 28-13-2-0 Castlegar Rebels, who split their two games this weekend beating the Nelson Leafs, 5-3, and dropping a 5-3 match to the 35-50-0 Kimberley Dynamiters. The Hawks have just seven games remaining in their season, and will face off against the league leading Dynamiters on Saturday at the Hawks Nest at 7:30 p.m. “The most important thing for us is that we build on our game, and we continue to get better. It’s a long season, it’s a hard season, and we want to get everybody clicking and playing their best when we get to the playoffs.”

Penticton went 2-for-7 on the power play, while Trail went 1-for-6. On Friday in Penticton, Nic Jones had a pair and the Vees got singles from Tyson Jost, Owen Sillinger Luke Voltin and Dante Fabbro. Jones, Jost, Sillinger and Conway each finished with three-point nights. Jake Kauppila broke up the

shutout bid late in the second in his first game back after missing three weeks with a concussion. Trail faces off against the 25-14-34 Silverbacks tonight, and with nine games remaining, the Smoke Eaters desperately need a win in order to prolong their season. “They (Salmon Arm) are a pretty experienced group, they’ve returned a lot of players so they all are kind of peaking, lots of balance, they have good depth, so they have a lot of players that are very specific to their roles, and they

play well, and they have good goaltending.” said Deschenes. “We got to just compete and fight, that’s the only requirement from the coaching staff.” Puck drop for the Smokies-Silverbacks game tonight is 7:30 p.m. at the Cominco Arena. Smoke Signals: The BCHL will hold its Fivehole for Food Challenge tonight at the Smoke Eater game, and encourage fans to bring non-perishable food items or a cash donation to help support local food banks. Retiree matches go down to the wire TIMES CORRESPONDENT

Trail Mens Retirees Curling saw turning points a plenty as the majority of matches went down to the wire last week at the Trail Curling Club. In a game that featured angle raises and double takeouts by both skips, Tom Hall and Murray Walsh, it came down to a draw to the four foot by Hall with his last rock to sit shot, buried. Trailing by one, with hammer Walsh had a draw to the pin to tie or a two inch tap-back for the win. With back-eight weight Walsh’s rock did not curl enough to make contact. Make the thrilling final 5–3 Hall. In a high scoring but close game team Serge

Pasquali trailed by one to team Alvin Caron after six ends. Team Pasquali with hammer in the seventh had an opportunity for four, but did not make the shot, giving up a steal of one and an 8–5 Caron win. After trading deuces in the first two ends it was team Brett Rakuson with steals of one in the next three ends over team Pat Burke that proved to be the turning point. Taking one in the sixth and stealing one in seven Burke closed the gap to one. Burke forced Rakuson to throw his last rock in eight, Brett made it for the 6–4 win. In a wild game that was tied 5-5 after seven ends, it was team Harvey Handley that

had hammer in eight. The Forrest Drinnan foursome were forced to junk up the house and play for the steal. The plan worked with Drinnan emerging with the 6–5 victory. In what should have

been the turning point, a score of five in the second end, for team Kevin Oliver turned out to be just enough. As team Ernie Brown, down but not out, scored in five of the eight ends to salvage a 7 – 7 tie.

Teams Clare Coleman and Dan Horan were tied after four ends, but the turning point came after Coleman took two in the fifth, then stole two in the sixth and one in the seventh for an 8–3 victory.

OBITUARIES FUNERAL NOTICES Maxime Delphis Ovide Lepine

January 21st, 1929 – January 21st, 2016

Born in 1929, Max was raised on a farm near Batoche, SK. Growing up, he developed a strong work ethic raising horses and taking care of the family farm. He moved to Trail, BC in 1949 where he provided for and loved his wife and 6 children. He worked as an iron worker at Tech Cominco for over 40 years and had a passion for sports throughout his life, excelling in fastball, curling, broomball and horseshoes. He was also known for his bountiful garden and for his generous spirit, sharing the fruits of his labour with the people around him. In his later years, he enjoyed socializing and playing cards at the Eagles Club and spending time with his wife, Kathleen, hunting, fishing and camping at the Arrow Yacht Club. Max and Kay both loved music and could be often found floating around the dance floor. His love for his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren was ever present. In his later years, he always made time for them and could be found playing endless games of cards, teaching them how to build the perfect snowman or zipping down a hill on a sled. Always followed by a treat, be it magic gum, ice cream cones, quarters from your hat or pony tail, or simply the best hug you could ever imagine. He is recently predeceased by his soulmate of 66 years, Kathleen Lepine. He is predeceased by his parents, Alice and Robert Lepine, his brothers Edward and Russel, and his sister Irene Boechler. He is survived by his 6 children Diane (Dan) Brinson, Brien (Heather) Lepine, Beverley (Jack) Fowler, Roland (Lucie) Lepine, Wendy (David) Gleave, Gerald (Delaina) Lepine, his 14 grandchildren and his 15 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his brothers Carl (Helen) and Garnet, his sister Eugenia (Ron) Healey, as well as by sister-in-law Vivian Meabry. We will miss you, Dad. Give Mom a kiss from us when you see her. Quebec woman believed to have just turned 120

THE C ANADIAN PRESS MONTREAL - It’s universally accepted that parents want to die before their children, but outliving Cecilia Laurent has proven difficult. Laurent is believed to have turned 120 on Sunday and is possibly the world’s oldest person. Her 28-year-old great-grandson, Ronald Chery, says only three of Laurent’s 12 children are still alive, with the eldest in her 80s. But that doesn’t make Laurent too sad, he said. “She says to keep faith in God,” Chery explained. “And don’t ask too many questions.” Guinness World Records, however, is quite curious about Laurent, who moved to Quebec from Haiti in 2010 after the country’s earthquake. She lives in Montreal-area Laval with her family, including Chery, who said he couldn’t help but contact Guinness and send the London-based organization copies of Laurent’s passport and birth documentation. He said Guinness employees are currently on a fact-finding mission in the Caribbean nation to confirm the date of her birth, which her family swears is Jan. 31, 1896. If authenticated, Laurent will be named the oldest person alive, he said. Chery said his phone rings regularly from people across the country who want to speak to her and “find out the secret” to longevity. He said Laurent’s answer is God, adding she prays for several hours consecutively, every Friday. “When you obey the word of God and you respect everyone, he will guide you and will give you more life,” Chery said Laurent regularly tells him. “She knows if it’s the will of God you will pass away tomorrow morning.”

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - The Super Bowl looms as an important opportunity for the people at “CBS This Morning,” although they have no plans to be anywhere near the San Francisco area. CBS’ telecast of the big game is expected to give extra attention to the news show, which is steadily becoming a player in the morning TV world. CBS hopes new viewers tune in, and the show’s Gayle King has the spotlight of an interview with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama during the pregame show. “CBS This Morning” is expecting one of its biggest audiences on Feb. 8, the morning after the game, simply through people whose set will still be tuned to CBS because of the night before. Maybe they’ll stick around and watch. Rather than send King or co-anchors Charlie Rose and Norah O’Donnell to the football field, show executive producer Chris Licht is keeping them in New York and trying to build the best possible show around them that day. “If you do something connected to the Super Bowl, you may get a short-term gain but nobody will make the connection that this is something that they should do as part of their everyday routine,” he said. CBS’ morning news show had been an afterthought for decades and, even after the current trio began in 2012, it hasn’t left third place behind ABC’s “Good Morning America” and NBC’s “Today.” But “CTM” has gained nearly a million viewers in four years, a startling figure at a time viewer declines are the norm. ABC’s trend line is down; “Good Morning America” has lost some 400,000 viewers in the past year. “Today” has done better lately, but is still about 300,000 viewers down from four years ago, Nielsen said. Drawing on the networks’ strengths from the “CBS Evening News” and “60 Minutes” broadcasts, the morning show has adopted a meat-and-potatoes approach that has clicked at a time its rivals have gone lighter. Its calling cards are the “eyeopener” segment that gives a quick video review of the day’s top talking points, and interviews that feature all three of the hosts. “We’re putting on the news,” CBS News President David Rhodes said. “It’s not that complicated.”

‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ tops box office THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - “Kung Fu Panda 3” kicked its way to the top of the North American box office with a respectable $41 million, according to Rentrak estimates Sunday. The DreamWorks Animation film cost a reported $145 million to make and earned a strong “A” CinemaScore from audiences - 70 per cent of whom were families. “It’s a bold move to take a franchise which has had great success in that summer corridor and move it into late January, which is generally considered a very slow time,” Rentrak’s senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian said. “It also filled a huge void in the marketplace.” The first film opened to $60.2 million in 2008 and the second to $47.7 million in 2011. For Fox, switching up the release was a no-brainer after seeing the successes of “The Lego Movie” and last year’s “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” in this time frame. “We know that when the market conditions are right, this business really is a 365-day-a-year business,” said Chris Aronson, Fox’s domestic distribution chief. “We saw an opportunity and we grabbed it. We’re thrilled with the results.” There are a number of winter holidays coming up where kids will be out of school and “Zootopia,” 2016’s next big animated release, doesn’t open until March 4. The animated sequel also fared much better than the weekend’s other new openers, like Disney’s Coast Guard adventure “The Finest Hours,” which debuted in fourth place with $10.3 million. Based on a real life 1952 rescue mission, “The Finest Hours” stars Chris Pine, Casey Affleck and Ben Foster and cost around $80 million to make. The “Fifty Shades of Grey” parody “Fifty Shades of Black,” meanwhile, earned a modest $6.2 million, but it only cost a reported $5 million to produce. Marlon Wayans co-wrote, stars in and produced the R-rated takeoff. Overall, there wasn’t much space for newcomers with strong holdovers like “The Revenant” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which took second and third place with $12.4 million and $10.8 million, respectively. Both fell only 23 per cent from last weekend.

Because I am currently unemployed, I am forced to live at home with my parents as I search for another job. ROSSLAND WINTER CARNIVAL

Annual bobsled race attracts record number of entries

CHELSEA NOVAK Rossland News

Team Liquid Courage won this year’s Sonny Samuelson Bobsled Race on Saturday. A record 38 teams entered this year’s event, and each raced down Spokane St., past large and enthusiastic crowds, twice. The Liquid Courage

hit a speed of 77 mph on its first run, crossing the finish line in 39.03 seconds, the fastest time of the day, and amping up the pressure for Woody’s Tire, who had a time of 39.31 seconds in the first heat. Sadly for Woody’s Tire, they slowed down in the second heat, covering the track in

41.69 seconds, for a combined time of 1:21, losing out by mere seconds to Liquid Courage, who made their second run in 40.44 seconds, for a combined time of 1:19.47. Travis Drake, spokesperson for Liquid Courage, credited their win to the sled’s skis. “It all has to do with

the conditions and you gotta have skis,” he said. “We do all of our ski tech work up at Gerick’s in Trail, and that’s what it’s about — it’s about skis. Your sled can be ugly and it doesn’t matter; it’s what’s on the bottom, not on the top.” The S.S. Instigator took third place with time of 1:22.62.

Rossland Winter Carnival crowds were treated to some outdoor volleyball and intricate carvings adorning the entrance to the beer gardens along Columbia Avenue. Chelsea Novak photo

A Hue Too Many took too long to place, but were by no means the slowest team on the track. They made a decent showing with a combined time of 1:57.79
