With recent catastrophic fire events comes the sober realization that most of us need to become more diligent about protecting our homes and properties from wildfires. The program known as FireSmart provides expert advice on how to make our houses and land secure in the event of fire by taking some fairly simple steps. This was the message delivered by Bridesvillebased Quintech Fire Services principal Darren Hutchinson to a group of West Boundary residents on tJan. 26 at a meeting to kick off the planned FireSmart initiative in the region. Joined by Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) Area E/West Boundary Director Vicki Gee, Hutchinson briefly explained the foundation of the federal initiative and described the ease with which the neighbouring Anarchist Mountain community attained its FireSmart Canada Community status, the result of residents joining forces for a weekend and clearing brush, trimming trees and taking other simple steps to prevent a wildfire from reaching their homes. Hutchinson arrived at the meeting armed with binders to distribute to any members of 18 separate “communities” (eg Hulme Creek Road, Westrbridge to Beaverdell, Rock Creek Bridesville Road) who attended the meeting. Each binder contained a detailed check list that is used to assess a property’s ability to survive a wild fire. The list includes roofing type (shakes are the least desirable), proximity of trees to a dwelling (minimum 10 metres is recommended) and other “common sense” factors which many residents likely overlooked prior to the Rock Creek fire. Residents are being encouraged to form work groups within their designated areas and assist

The racing was thunderous and non-stop last Saturday in Midway, when dozens of sledders and spectators came together for the 7th annual Snowmobile Drag Races, presented by the Kettle Valley Racing Association.
Sleds throttle out on strip The sun shone brightly last Saturday as the 7th annual Snowmobile Drag Races took to the Midway Airstrip, bringing dozens of racers out to compete for cash and trophies.
Unlike last year’s event, which was dampened by wet weather, this year’s races took place in crisp, cool air and perfect snow. Organizer Darrin Metcalf was pleased by the turnout of
one another in the FireSmart initiative, which will officially get underway at the first training session on Feb. 20 at 9 a.m. at the Rock Creek Fairgound pavilion. All area residents are welcome to attend. Darren Hutchinson of Quintech Fire Services, along with RDKB director Vicki Gee, is spearheading the FireSmart initiative for West Boundary residents.

Needless to say, we were very pleased with the event.” Metcalf also mentioned a possible collaboration with Princeton and its snowmobiling community next winter, in the form of a racing points system to make the competition more than a one-day affair. Hall will be focus of meeting Midway council began its regular meeting on Monday with Councillor Dick Dunsdon introducing two late items to the agenda, including councillor remuneration and renovation of the community hall. Hall upgrades needed Dunsdon said the present hall, considering its age, may present issues regarding renovations. He was more in support of finding an alternative location for the community hall. Mayor Kappes stated that he feels the situation has to move forward one way or another. Councillor Metcalf was in favour of a public meeting regarding the building as was Councillor Rotvold, though she was not in favour of a new building. The building could be viewed as heritage, though Rotvold suggested there may be grants available to upgrade the building because of that very designation. Council decided to hold a public meeting as a first step in the process. Councillors get raise Dundson made a motion to approve an annual remuneration increase of approximately eight per cent for council members, which would increase a councillors stipend to $6,000, while the mayor would receive $7,600 annually. The motion was passed, though it was noted

that the remuneration bylaw will have to be rewritten. Concrete plant trial permit requested Osoyoos Readi-Mix has asked council to consider issuing the company a temporary industrial permit to begin a trial operation of a concrete patching facility. The company has been investigating potential locations for a plant and has identified Midway as being well-located for such an operation. Council took the request under advisement and will discuss the matter at a later date. Midway rejection of hotel tax disappoints Council discussed its rejection of the Municipal and Regional District Tax on accommodation in response to correspondence from Midway Hospitality Ltd (Mile Zero Motel), which cited its disappointment with Midway’s decision. A motion to receive and file the letter was passed. The city of Greenwood has also rejected the tax at this time. Chief Administrator attends special meeting CAO Penny Feist reported
on her attendance at the Zone 4 fire chiefs/CAO education and meeting in Creston, telling council it was a very informative session which drew many experts together to discuss, among other things, procedures that should be followed during fire events such as those seen last summer throughout the Boundary and Washington State. Presenters included Deputy Regional Fire Chief Dan Derby, Dennis Rexin (Senior Forest Protection Officer for the BC Wildfire Service) and Fire Chiefs Dale Harriot (Grand Forks) and Walt Osellame (Midway). There was also a workshop on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which focused on enhanced critical incident stress management, common psychological and behavioral crisis reactions and the recognition of PTS and PTSD symptoms. Village looks to rebrand profile The Village of Midway is in the planning stage of rebranding its profile, which would include a new logo, tag line, welcome sign and website. Munday Media and Design of Osoyoos has been asked to provide a quote. The next council meeting will be on Monday Feb. 15 at 7pm, 6:30 pm if there is a delegation.

Stop the abuse Canada’s animal welfare laws have remained largely unchanged since 1892. While recent amendments to the laws have increased penalties for those found guilty of animal abuse, the application and scope of the current laws remain ineffective. Unfortunately this makes it difficult to prosecute even the worst animal abusers which can lead to but one conclusion; our laws need to be improved to serve as a real tool to protect animals from neglect and abuse. Internationally, Canada’s animal cruelty legislation is viewed as outdated and lagging far behind most developed countries. In Canada, animals are not protected equally, due to a criminal code that fails to provide a clear definition of “animal,” but rather, refers to specific animals and protects them differently. The current law contains a separate section and separate offences for cattle, and refers to dogs, birds and “other animals.” Canada offers virtually no protection for wild and stray animals, as unowned animals have less protection than owned animals. In fact, under the Criminal Code, animal cruelty crimes are considered property offences instead of violence against a living, sensitive creature. Another issue with the animal cruelty section of the Criminal Code of Canada is the use of the term “willful neglect” which requires proof that an accused intended to harm or kill his or her animal(s). Courts must prove that neglect was a willful or motivated action. Even in extreme cases where, perhaps, dozens of animals have been left out in the cold to die or starved to death, judges will typically conclude that the accused didn’t actually intend for the animal(s) to suffer or die and will find them not guilty. Although penalties dealing with animal cruelty were recently updated, these penalties are still insufficient, with many loopholes, and do not act as a deterrent to violent offences and abusive owners. All in all, we need to collectively lobby for stricter laws to help protect animals from abuse and, simultaneously, support animal sanctuaries like Rock Creek’s Karl Ranch. After all, isn’t it about time we eliminated animal abuse once and for all?

Editor, The Times: Re: Tripp article “boomers mourn their hereos” I would normally ignore an article such as “Boomers mourn their heroes” but it is so full of sweeping, poorly thought-out generalizations I felt that on behalf of those of us “staring down a tunnel of uncertainty when it comes to their health,” I should respond to some of your comments. I don’t use social media, but it probably isn’t the most authoritative source of information. I do read, however, and have studied history in detail, especially 20th century history (BA, BED) and still continue to do so. Some prefer social media. If being the offspring of men and women who built the weapons of war, fed and equipped the troops, fought the Na-
zis, Fascists, and Japanese, after surviving the Great Depression makes us the most privileged of generations, I would agree, we owe that generation a huge debt of gratitude as does every generation since. However, many never returned from the Second World War, and many of those that did were damaged beyond repair, PTSD, and every kind of disability one can imagine. While overseas: especially the bomber command of eat, drink, and be merry was a reality for the front line people. That was perhaps passed on to the “boomers” subliminally. Or perhaps the uncertainty created by the Cold War era, Vietnam war, and nuclear arms race had a similar effect on the collective consciousness. Some of us rejected the post war materialism and began looking at alternatives to big energy. Some made significant innovations that are once again being reinvented and mass produced for the good of the environment. We became one of the most creative, liberal thinking, “brash, adventurous, confident demographic” generations ever. The music scene exploded with new styles, and reworked old styles. I don’t mourn the loss of music icons, but sad to see them go—but we all must go sometime, any fool knows that. And on that “note,” the cancer issue is not related to “the era in which they were born,” my wife and I lost all four parents to cancer, my mother was 51. This year we lost two 58-year-old friends to cancer. Statistically the older the person, the more likely cancer can strike: obviously our generation will be more likely to get cancer. With the results of horrific agricultural practices, and big pharma, don’t hold your breath for longevity. Many of these stars you refer to, however, lived hard and fast and the lifestyle took the life. As we see our peers dying at an increasing rate, “denial regarding their own aging and death” is a ridiculous, thoughtless comment, and at this point in my “boomerhood,” my four children are all educated and independent, and will not be burdened by their parents. How Mr. Tripp has attempted to connect this notion to the deaths of Bowie, Frey and Kilmister as “even more poignant” is really beyond understanding His piece is an opinion piece, so requires nothing but his own thoughts; well, perhaps he should think again, because this item was garbage. Brian Scott, Rock Creek

Phoenix hosts races
The Boundary’s own Phoenix Mountain Ski Hill welcomed a hundred keen youngsters on Jan. 24 to its leg of the Rio Tinto Nancy Greene Ski League slalom competition for the under 12 and under 14 categories. Racers and spectators were treated to pristine weather con-
ditions and enjoyed some excellent slalom techniques courtesy of the five ski clubs that make up the West Kootenay zone: Phoenix, Red Mountain (Rossland), Salmo, White Water (Nelson) and Summit Lake. On Sunday, the teams travelled to Rossland, where over 200 skiers took to the course,
and on Feb. 14 they will convene in Salmo for the competition there. On Feb. 28, the racing will switch to Whitewater and the zone finals will take place on Mar. 13 at Summit Lake. The results of the Phoenix competitions were as follows:

Schneider has been a certified dog trainer since 2004, conducting obedience, puppy and movie tricks classes, while Rogers is currently half way through a two-year clinical pet nutritionist degree program. Rogers also gained her pre-vet degree though the University of Calgary. The couple shares ideals in terms of the rescue aspect and dogs in general. “We both believe that the dogs we have do well with us because we firmly believe in setting them up for success and not failure and both of us are very well versed in reading a dogs body language,” Rogers said. “Our ultimate goal is ensuring they are happy and well adjusted. “We’ve had dogs that were abused to the point they had completely shut down, and we’ve been able to bring their self confidence back and get them adopted out to the right home. We’ve put years into working with dogs and then once we see them confidently leave with their new families, it proves that it takes patience and knowing what the dog needs to move past any traumatic experience they may have expe-
rienced.” In Calgary, Rogers fostered for various rescue organizations for six years, fostering over 450 dogs during that time span, often ending up with the problem dogs and medical cases because of her experience. Both Rogers and Schneider gained valuable knowledge through working with numerous rescue groups in Calgary and decided to approach the Just Love Animals (JLA) Society to suggest a partnership. JLA runs the Petapalooza events in Victoria, Vancouver and Calgary and is looking to expand to other cities in the next few years. Rogers and Schneider have the property, space and vast canine experience with which to support JLA’s animal welfare mandate. “Our ultimate goal is to offer boarding, daycare and training, in addition to nutrition consulting to help fund the rescue,” Rogers said. “We know that working with animals may not make us millionaires but helping to save every animal we are capable of is what matters most.
