EATING DISORDERS
The ACT turns purple for cause
Maple Ridge Councillor Kiersten Duncan is part of an awareness campaign.
Four years together: Alex Smith was tired after a hike up Enderby Cliffs, so girlfriend and TIMES reporter Ashley Wadhwani had to entertain herself somehow.
TROY LANDREVILLE tlandreville@mrtimes.com
If you’re near The ACT after darkness falls this week, and wonder why the front of the building is bathed in purple light, there’s a reason. Until Feb. 7, The ACT’s entrance turns purple to recognize the launch of the Provincial Eating Disorder Awareness campaign (PEDAW). PEDAW is an initiative led by Jessie’s Legacy Program, to bring awareness around prevention, early intervention, and treatment of eating disorders. Maple Ridge Councillor Kiersten Duncan is fully behind the campaign. For the past five years, Duncan has worked at the Looking Glass Camp for girls with eating disorders, run out of Maple Ridge in partnership with Pinnacle Pursuits, a team building company founded by Jonathan Willcocks. Looking Glass Camp is an eight-day summer camp at Loon Lake. Geared for girls and young women between the ages of 14 and 24 who are experiencing “disordered eating,” the camp focuses on wellness, nutrition, and friendship. When she started with Pinnacle Pursuits, Duncan thought the camp would be a “really cool, very different experience.”

Bypass targeted ‘Dream’ comes true for Ridge teen TROY LANDREVILLE tlandreville@mrtimes.com
After a deadly 2015 along that stretch of roadway, improvements to the Haney Bypass is a priority for the City of Maple Ridge. City municipal engineer David Pollock said “we’re seeking to advance [the work on the Haney Bypass] as best as we can, but there is no timeline, per se.” The Ministry of Transportation is responsible for the road, which was the scene of three fatal accidents last year. The City’s population is projected to increase by more than 30,000 people to 109,000 residents by 2031.With this population surge comes more traffic, and to prepare for that, the City set out an objective of widening the bypass from two-to-three lanes to four lanes as part of its strategic transportation plan prepared in 2014. David Pollock The bypass is generally a two City engineer lane roadway east of 227th Street and three lanes to the west (two westbound and one eastbound), and connects with Lougheed Highway on both the east and west sides of downtown, serving as an alternative route for through traffic to avoid the downtown area. “The mayor [Nicole Read] had a number of discussions with province about what can be done along the Lougheed corridor,” Pollock said. “There’s been a good number of discussions related to the Haney Bypass itself,” Pollock added. “There are potentially different configurations that could be considered [in terms of the intersections along the bypass].” > More: mrtimes.com, search ‘Haney Bypass’

A 15-year-old Maple Ridge boy is off on a dream trip with his family, thanks to the Sunshine Foundation of Canada’s Dreams for Kids. This past Saturday, accompanied by his parents, and surrounded by family, friends, school childcare workers, Sunshine volunteers, a Mountie in red serge, and the Sunshine Bear, Daniel Spiridigliozzi was presented with a five-night trip to Atlantis Resort: a nautical theme park in the Bahamas. The presentation took place at the Winners/ HomeSense Store at Meadowtown Centre, in Pitt Meadows, on Saturday. “Winners Home Sense is our number one national sponsor, and we get a lot of the money to pay for these dreams from Winners/ HomeSense, and they’re a huge supporter of us,” said Daryl Stone, past president of the Sunshine Foundation’s local chapter. The presentation event itself “went very well,” said Stone.

Juno-nominated musician is hoping to ease the pressure on a Maple Ridge family dealing with a heartbreaking situation. James “Buddy” Rogers said he called in some favours from his music industry friends and is organizing a concert, set for Sunday, Feb. 21 at Langley’s Cascades Casino, to support Kira Short and her family. A bubbly five-year-old, Kira has a malignant tumour on her spine which is inoperable. After three months of treatment, the family will check to see if Kira’s cancer is responding to chemotherapy in Vancouver. If it is, treatment will continue for another three months, up to 42 weeks total. If it’s not, she and her family will fly to Boston for two-and-a-half months of proton radiation therapy. Kira’s family includes her mom Rayanne, a nursing student, and her dad Peter, an apprentice plumber. She’s also big sister to two-yearold Jayden. The young family is going through a painful time, both mentally and financially, as they battle for Kira’s life.

Donations are being collected and this concert is another chance to help support this family. Kira loves life, her dad shared. She plays soccer, took swimming lessons at the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre, and is always looking out for her little brother. “She has oodles and oodles of friends, she likes arts and crafts, and she’s finally had enough of Frozen, believe it or not,” Peter said. Watching his daughter suffer, and not able to be with her kindergarten classmates at Maple Ridge Elementary or playing with her friends, breaks Peter’s heart. “This is not her,” he said. “She’s not doing the things a typical five-

About 40 amateur performers will be falling down the rabbit hole on Monday, Feb. 8 at The ACT Theatre. Back in January, eager participants could sign up to be apart of Motus O Dance Theatre’s production of Alice in Wonderland. The five-person theatre company has been touring across Canada,
and auditioning, training, and acting alongside locals from each town they perform in. James Croker, director, actor, and one of the founders of Motus O, told The TIMES that although the local performers will not have speaking roles, they will be a part of scenes that include choreo-
graphed dancing and a lot of movement. “Our philosophy is that we embed them into the performance, they don’t just stand there and be trees,” the director said.“We actually found over the years it enhances the production.” On Sunday, the theatre company will host
a six-hour training session with the new performers for the next day’s show at 1 p.m. Tickets for Monday’s show are $25/ adults, and $15/ youth 24 years and younger and available at theactmapleridge.org or through phone at 604-476-2787. > More: mrtimes.com, search ‘Alice’

I’d like to suggest an alternative: consider this an official challenge to party like it’s the 1950s. Shut off the cellphones and computers. Forget all about the tasks waiting to be completed, and honour the day as it is intended. On Family Day, parks and leisure services is offering a number of free programs for families. The ACT has lantern making and creative art stations available, also at no cost. Go for a walk; play at the park; stay at home; bake cookies; play with LEGO; watch movies and eat popcorn. WATER MAIN FLUSHING The City of Pitt Meadows Public Works Department will be flushing water mains throughout the municipality for approximately twelve weeks beginning February 15, 2016. During this time there may be a temporary drop in water pressure or a noticeable discolouration in tap water. To correct problems with milky water, open the cold tap slightly to bleed air from the water lines. If you experience problems with dirty water, turn on an outside tap and let it run until the water clears. The City thanks residents for their patience during this routine maintenance of the water mains. If there are any questions or concerns please call 604-465-2434. Make a fine Family Day
I
t’s hard to say anything about “the right way to celebrate Family Day.” Our newest provincial holiday is just four years old this year, implemented by the province for the first time in 2013 (just in time for a provincial election). It isn’t even our idea. Feb. 8 is also being celebrated as Family Day in Ontario, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. P.E.I. celebrates Prince Edward Islander Day, Nova Scotia celebrates a Heritage Day and Manitobans mark Louis Riel Day in February. There’s no religious, cultural, or historic purpose attached to the day. It was put in place purely to give everyone a bit of a break during the long-ish slog of no-holidays between New Year’s Eve and Easter. Family Day’s name is an exercise in branding, pure and simple, a voter-friendly name plastered on something. It could have been called Winter’s Almost Over Day or Second Groundhog Day or Lie at Home Eating Waffles and Watching Netflix Day. But, cynical as we may be, it’s not a bad idea to call it Family Day. Christmas and New Year’s are often a mixture of wonderful and stressful. Winter, with its long dark days and frequent torrential rain, can bring people’s moods down. One of the best ways to recharge and re-energize, before spring finally bursts free and we can enjoy a bit of sunshine (or at least warmer rain showers), is to spend time with those who are special to us. So this coming Family Day long weekend, try to make some time for a group activity with your loved ones. Go for a walk. Play a board game. You could even host your own version of Waffles & Netflix day, if you make enough for two or three or a dozen people. Don’t worry about narrowly defining who your family is for this Family Day. Husbands and wives, parents and kids, siblings, and good friends. In fact, if we really want to keep the spirit of Family Day in our hearts all year, maybe the government could hold it two or three times annually? How about it, politicians?

There was massive dissatisfaction with the status quo. The citizens were angry, and they stood tall behind a new leader who could bring down the old regime and usher in a new and better way of life. They were promised a new world, with renewed power in the world – and that power was to be held by the country’s citizens, instead of an established, corroded, and corrupt ruling class. And there was even an election. The people spoke, and they got what they wanted. Or so they thought. That was before the wall. It was before “unsanctioned” places of worship began closing. And before some of their neighbours started disappearing. It was before they realized that they had to carefully consider every word they said, in fear of the wrong ears hearing expressions of the wrong thoughts. It was before the election rules changed – an expedience to ensure there was time to rework the system to ensure restora-
tion of prosperity. It was before their leader won his third re-election with 98.7 per cent of ballots cast. At first, their neighbours stood stunned, cut off from friends and family by a wall and a warped ideology. But no more. The rest of world was fed up with the political posturing, the human rights violations, and the obstinate economic and military bullying. By the time he got to the wall, the protest had already started. The “safe zone” had been breached, but he was both amazed and, admittedly, relieved. Remarkably, instead of firing on the protestors, as had occurred so many times before in accordance with standing orders, the soldiers were abandoning their gun turrets, climbing down into the mass of protestors, and joining the chant: “Mr. Trump, tear down that wall!” Read Matthew Claxton’s Painful Truth online this week at mrtimes.com

COMMUNITY FEEDBACK
MAPLE RIDGE & PITT MEADOWS TIMES
Letters Newspaper’s reach reaffirmed Dear Editor, I would like to thank everyone who helped me deliver my promised photograph to Corrie and Henry Koch. The TIMES [Hunt on for Mr. & Mrs. John Doe, Jan. 28, TIMES] and the Maple Ridge community made the connection possible. This type of connection, as with the Koch’s, in my case is not isolated. Here is another instance I will share with you that was also facilitated by The TIMES. About two years go, I advertised in the Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows TIMES to find our lost cat; sure enough it worked, we got Tigger back! He was missing for 13 days and we were giving up on finding him. It turns out he was hanging out in someone’s backyard, down by 203rd

Michael Baraka photo
Within minutes of their photo going up on The TIMES website and Facebook, Corrie and Henry Koch were identified and reconnected with photographer Michael Baraka, who wanted to give the Maple Ridge couple a digital copy of this picture. Likewise, Baraka also credited The TIMES with helping his family find their lost cat, Tigger, in past due to the paper’s strong community connections.
Street, and all that was needed to bring him home was the connection; ie. The TIMES, and a phone call from a Good Samaritan. After some time of not receiving a reply from Mr. & Mrs. John Doe, I figured they must have lost my contact information, and I did promise them their photo-
graph. Being a serious photographer, I was wondering how to make good on my promise. Now I was faced with a similar situation as with Tigger. I was familiar with the recurring Faces & Places feature in The TIMES; then it occurred to me that this must qualify for Faces & Places. I will just call them Mr. & Mrs. John Doe and send the image to the paper, along with
a few lines how we met on the dikes and subsequently lost track of each other. Sure enough it worked again! That very same afternoon Corrie and Henry Koch emailed me, thanking me. What a thrill it was to have their picture in The TIMES, they told me. Of course, I immediately emailed them their photograph. Michael Baraka, Maple Ridge

Putting on the Glitz, which outfits local grads who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford to dress up for their graduation festivities, received a huge helping hand from the public last weekend. The dress drive last Saturday at Haney Place Mall was a success, with 25 prom dresses and three suits donated, along with jewelry, purses, and shoes – some of which were shown off by volunteers Michelle Cherak, Shirley Karasz, and Debbie Davis. Rev. David Edgerton was inducted Feb. 2. ASHLEY WADHWANI ashley.wadhwani@mrtimes.com
St. George’s church officially welcomed Rev. David Edgerton to the Anglican parish on Feb. 2, after he made the move with his family from England. Edgerton, 34, along with his wife and three children ages six, four, and two years old, sold most of their belongings except eight packed suitcases, a guitar and the children’s bikes and touched down in Vancouver about three weeks ago. The family has been familiarizing themselves with Maple Ridge and Richmond – where they’re currently residing until their house in Maple Heights is ready. “Life is busy... It’s a bit of a roller coaster,” he said with a chuckle. Living in a new place is like driving “a car you’ve never driven,” he added. Meanwhile, driving on the opposite side of the road has also been “a different experience.”
Ashley Wadhwani/TIMES
Rev. David Edgerton recently moved with his wife and kids from England. Despite the busyness of the recent move and getting acquainted with the Dewdney Trunk church, the Reverend hopes to spend some time enjoying Maple Ridge views both on the ground and from the sky. Edgerton gained his private pilot license three years ago through the coventry in the U.K. and has been itching to fly. “I haven’t flown much in the last year so I’m hoping to get
back in the air this year,” he said. He’s also an avid runner, and ran in the Virgin Money London Marathon two years ago. Running is a “great way to meet the community,” he added. In October, when Edgerton visited Maple Ridge for his interview at the church, he went for what he hoped would be a ten mile run, he recalled. He ran down 224th Street
where he reached a “sign saying warning: bears,” and immediately turned around, cutting his run a mile short, he explained. He’s already signed up for the BMO Vancouver Marathon in May, he said, and plans to use the run to raise money, potentially for some future plans for the church. Edgerton said that he’s excited to “develop” the St. Georges community. His resume includes serving at one of the biggest Anglican churches in Birmingham, England, he said, with roughly 600 members. He’s already made headway in reaching a few of his goals at the Dewdney Trunk church, including a new logo for St. George’s, which he created himself. Next, he’s looking to make St. Georges more children-friendly. “For me, I wasn’t really interested in church as a child,” he admitted. “Having children myself, I want to make children welcome where they don’t just sit there and shut up.” Edgerton attends Saturday community dinners with the church, to meet members and gather input on future church plans.

IN THE CROWD
Ridge man fanning the Flames ASHLEY WADHWANI ashley.wadhwani@mrtimes.com
There’s something special about loyal fans and the part they play in generating the atmosphere for athletes, said Ridge Meadows Flames head coach Bayne Ryshak. And one of those notably loyal of the junior B hockey team’s fans is Maple Ridge resident Ken Grant, who has an almost unblemished record of attendance at the Flames’ Friday night home games at Planet Ice. His love for the Flames blossomed five years ago, when worker Joseph Croll began taking him to the 7:30 p.m. puck drop. “He kept asking ‘when was the
next game, when was the next game?’” Croll explained. So he made a schedule of the games, and for almost every Friday during the past season the duo has watched the Flames from the stands behind the time keepers. Home manager Kelly Ternes explained that Grant loves the team more than he loves the Vancouver Canucks, who he also watches weekly on TV. On Fridays, Grant puts on his Flames hat, grabs his program to bring along with him and gets to enjoy a snack and drink while watching his favourite team. “It’s a great feeling to have fans like Ken,” Ryshak said. “Even at our level, it’s great to have fans of all ages out to support regularly that take pride and have passion in the team.” Ryshak told The TIMES that fans “bring great energy to the building and make [us] play and work a little harder,” and

Ken Grant, 60, has collected a Flames hat, a few pucks, and jerseys. he hopes to get more fans out at this year’s playoff games. Although playoff details are still in the works as the Pacific Junior Hockey League’s season winds down, Ryshak hopes to see Grant continue his support
through the post season. “It’s a special feeling to have people emotionally invested in your team,” he added. Ryshak thanked Grant for his support and added that he would “see you in the playoffs.”
The Flames (17-18-1-2) are in fourth place in the Harold Brittain Conference. So, barring a Flames’ win streak to close out the campaign coupled with an Aldergrove Kodiaks’ collapse, the local boys will play the conference’s top team in a best-of-seven opening round series. The last two weeks of the season will determine whether they’ll play the Mission City Outlaws or Abbotsford Pilots. The Flames are back in action at home tomorrow (Feb. 5), when they host the North Vancouver Wolf Pack. Game time at Planet Ice is 7:30 p.m. The Flames have momentum after doubling the host Delta Ice Hawks 6-3 on Tuesday. Brandon Inwood led the Flames’ offence with a hat trick.

Andy Bird had two dreams growing up in a family of four kids headed by a single mom with a physical disability: Become a professional wrestler and help the people on his reserve in northern Saskatchewan. Bird, who lives in Maple Ridge and wrestles professionally parttime in his trademark dreadlocks as Andy “The Dreadful” Bird, says he’s checked off the first box and
now is ready to tackle the second. Bird is a member of the Montreal Lake Cree Nation, three-and-a-half hours north of Saskatoon. Now 26, he was born in nearby Prince Albert and then moved to Saskatoon, before heading to Calgary to become a wrestler with little money and no definite plans. He came to B.C. by invitation to train with a wrestling mentor. Now, his dream is to raise money for the “Bird’s Nest,” a house where young adults from his reserve can come to live temporarily and learn the life skills that he says on which they’re missing out in Montreal Lake. > More: mrtimes.com, search ‘Bird’

EXTRAVAGANZA
Posting Closeson: on:Sunday, Sunday,February January 10, Posting Closes 14,2015 2016at at9:00 9:00pm. pm PDT
Artists and poets joined their pens and brushes to create unique pieces of art that examine the theme of laughter. About 70 people attended the Artist and Poets Extravaganza at The ACT Theatre on Feb. 2, where 16 pairs of poets and artists showcased their works. Leading up to the extravaganza, 16 poets wrote a piece following the theme of laughter. The finished poems found the hands of a local artist who transformed the written words into a separate piece of art. On Tuesday night, the group met and the artists revealed their final products to the poets for the first time. “Everybody had an awesome time, Holy Wow Poets director Phil C Ransom said. “They are a wonderful group of extremely talented artists and
poets. This evening was definitely a bookmark in a page of the Holy Wow Poets. After meeting the poet that inspired his painting, Maple Ridge resident Jamie Stratchan ended his night leaving his piece with the poet. Shortly after, he wrote about his moments with the poet on Facebook. “The lady loved the painting of her poem so much, but didn’t have cash to pay for it, so I gave it to her, he wrote. “She was ecstatic! After all, what am I going to do with a painting of a poem? Stratchan’s painting on canvas depicts a naked woman carrying a cross in the rain, and a second naked woman dancing under a rainbow. “Well basically we all have our own crosses to carry in life, he explained. “But when we let that baggage go then we can just dance free under a rainbow, he said, laughing. This was the artist’s second year participating in the event. >More: mrtimes.com, search ‘Extravaganza’
