Castlegar-born musician writes online memoir CHELSEA NOVAK West Kootenay Advertiser
The first band Rob Chursinoff ever played for was a death metal band he started with fellow Castlegar kid Jason Corbett called Skullflush. The two moved to Vancouver and went on to form other bands: Speed to Kill, a hard rock band, and TV Heartattack, an ’80s-inspired rock band. Eventually Chursinoff ended up drumming for Tegan and Sara. Along the way there are other bands, other cities and a psychedelic overdose; all of which you can read about in Chursinoff ’s new online memoir, Beats Per Minute. Born and raised in Castlegar, Chursinoff opens his story in his family’s music room where his older brother Tom first taught him to play the drums and helped influence his musical tastes. Churisnoff ’s descriptions of Castlegar aren’t exactly rosecoloured: “Outside, the pulp mill has made the air hazy and yellow and ripe with fart. Across the road, past the train tracks and my grandparents’ house, beyond the abandoned fruit orchards, across from where the Kootenay River and Columbia River meet, below the layer of haze and surrounded by the Selkirk Mountains, is town. It’s a small logging community, where teenagers and plenty of grown-ups battle small dreams and boredom, with bush parties, pot and booze.” But he says that he had fun growing up in Castlegar, and that a lot of what coloured his descriptions were emissions from the pulp mill and friends’ experiences, which were not always as positive. “I liked growing up in Castlegar. I had good friends there,” says Chersinoff. “I don’t think it was easy for a lot of people though, growing up there. I had friends that died because of drinking and driving. There were suicides, stuff like that. Like any small town, it was hard for some people. In the ’80s I think it was maybe a little more economically depressed than it is now. I don’t know that for a fact, but that’s the way it seems to me now. I think Castlegar, it’s a little cooler than back in the ’80s.” Chersinoff says friends of his from Vancouver were re-

cently in Castlegar shooting a film and they told him they enjoyed themselves. “They’d go to the Lion’s Head Pub, and they thought that was really cool,” he says. Chursinoff permanently moved to Vancouver when he was 21 years old and in his memoir he shares the moment when he realized his older brother Tom, who was also living in Vancouver, was a drug addict. He goes on to share some of the story of his brother’s addiction and how it eventually killed him. Chursinoff says that while he and his brother started off on similar paths, his brother’s eventually led him away from music and towards drugs. Chursinoff, on the other hand, experimented with psychedelic drugs, but never got into anything hard. “I only ever experimented with like mushrooms and LSD and other psychedelic drugs, as they coincided with the time that I was … in my early 20s working at Hemp BC, which in the 90s was at the forefront of marijuana and medical marijuana and advocacy,” says Chersinoff. “A lot of the people there were around my age and yeah, it was a good, fun, hippy time.” Chersinoff weaned himself off psychedelic drugs on a trip to Jamaica with his other brother Nick after taking things too far one night. “Unfortunately one night I took my experimentation too far and … the next morning I was paying for it, and I wasn’t exactly psychologically stable after that night of drugs,” he says. “So I had to kind of regroup and mellow out and figure out how to get myself back together, so I chose to go to Jamaica to do that with my brother Nick, who had been there a bunch of times.” Over the course of his career, Chursinoff played in 18 different bands, but there were times when he was between bands, so to speak, and in Beats Per Minute he refers to this as being band-less and the reader gets the sense that he is left directionless without a band. “I go months without listening to music because I feel it has abandoned me. I go years without touring. “I work 9-5 jobs for the first time in almost a decade. While slopping through the mud on a rainy Vancouver construction site I hear my former bands on the radio;
the feeling like being exiled to a prison colony in deep space. “Now and then I slip into bouts of depression because at some point, unbeknownst to me, my identity slyly and firmly fastened itself to the phrase, ‘I’m the drummer for…’” Chursinoff ends his memoir in November 2015, band-less once more, but he says that he doesn’t feel directionless. He’s been freelance writing — travel writing for Matador Network and TV and documentary writing for Red Bull Media House. “Even when I was back with Tegan and Sara… I kind of started to get re-interested in writing when I was with them because they would allow us to write for their — what was it called? — I guess it would be their tour journal that they would keep on their website, so like a little tour blog,” he says. “So I started to write for that and always got good responses from their fans, and then kind of got re-interested in travel writing. I wrote my first travel piece in 1989 about a trip to the Philippines.” To read Beats Per Minute, visit matadornetwork.com/ notebook/beats-perminute.

George Craft is seen in front of the Needles Hotel, which was also the post office. He was postmaster from 1920 until his death in 1942, Courtesy Ed and Marian Craft whereupon his wife Edith took over the job. Today all that’s left of the old Needles townsite is the cemetery.
Needles took name from Arrow Lake sandspits GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser
One hundred thirty-first in a semi-alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Needles, the western terminal of the Lower Arrow Lake ferry, was formerly known as The Needles, and was first mentioned in the Nelson Miner of Nov. 30, 1895, concerning two mining claims recorded by John D. McDonald and A.A. McPherson “at the Needles, Lower Arrow Lake.” In an interview published in the Arrow Lakes News on June 19, 1958, Rose Wright explained the name’s origin: “‘Why do you and many old timers speak of Needles as The Needles?’ ‘Well, it was always The Needles in the old days, due to the long points that reached out into the lake. It is only in later years that it has been shortened to Needles.’” The shortened version actually first appeared in the Miner
a week after the long version debuted, also in relation to mining claims, but it wasn’t until the Fire Valley post office was renamed Needles on Oct. 1, 1906 that it became commonplace. Even so, the “The” stuck around for some time — the Nelson Daily News of July 13, 1911 noted ”Welford Beeton of the Needles came in last night …” According to the BC Geographical Names database, Needles is the landing’s name, but The Needles is still the official name of the narrows, even though construction of the High Arrow Dam in the 1960s submerged both the sand spits and the community that grew up there. A new Needles post office was established in 1908 and closed in 1968 upon the flooding of the Arrow Lakes. Today the only thing left of the old community is its cemetery. In 1910, A.H. Green sur-
veyed what’s now Fauquier, on the east side of the lake, but the map called it Needles Ranch, a name by which it had been known since at least 1905. According to Just Where is Edgewood, a place between Needles and Edgewood was known as McKallister’s Landing, after “the land agent who settled the townsite of Needles.” No contemporary examples have been found of this place name and it’s not known exactly who its namesake was, although he was apparently still in the area selling property as of 1911. The late Bill Laux said McKallister’s (or McAllister’s) Landing was the site of the original Fire Valley post office, which opened in 1894. Later, the CPR called this place Page’s Landing after William Henry Page (18611933), an English miner who came to the area from Butte, Mont. around 1893 and served as Fire Valley postmaster from
1908 to 1910. Just Where is Edgewood (which erroneously calls him Walter Page) describes him thusly: “[H]e lived on the lakeshore between Edgewood and Needles … He had been married at one time but his wife never moved to the valley. He was always referred to as Captain Page and often took the part of Santa Claus in the early Edgewood years. He was a fat, jolly type of person.” He was among the first burials at the Needles cemetery, although his grave is unmarked. A mountain ridge was supposedly named for him as well, but it’s no longer on the books. Page’s Landing was first referred to in the Revelstoke Kootenay Mail of Sept. 26, 1902: “The scene of the new strike is only 16 miles from Page’s Landing, on Arrow Lake …” It was only ever mentioned a few more times.

Strengthening opportunities for youth
New Basin Youth Network to increase support to young people in the Basin Columbia Basin Trust is pleased to announce the formation of a Basin Youth Network. This network will help communities increase local activities and opportunities for youth, enabling youth to learn new skills, such as leadership, and engage more with each other and their communities. “We’ve been offering youth-related programs for over 15 years. Building upon these past successes, we’re excited to be strengthening community efforts to increase support to youth,” said Lisa Kilpatrick, Columbia Basin Trust senior manager, Delivery of Benefits. “We know youth need a range of local opportunities and resources to be happy and engaged in their communities, and we’re committed to working with communities to achieve this.” The Trust has allocated $4.65 million over three years — $1.55 million annually — to the network. It will build on and incorporate the Trust’s successful Community Directed Youth Funds program. Since 2011, this program has supported communities’ needs to keeping youth active and engaged. The Stoke Youth Network in Revelstoke is one of many successful examples. “We are really excited about the new structure,” said Megan Shandro, Revelstoke’s Youth Liaison. “It aligns with what we are already doing; it allows us to identify local priorities and act on them. We were one of the first communities to access the Trust’s community-directed
Adults and youth participating in the Community Directed Youth Funds program attended a conference-style event where they were inspired and educated to take action in their communities. The Trust’s support of youth will increase through the Basin Youth Network. Submitted photo
youth funds, and we’ve seen tremendous benefits with bringing together community stakeholders and increased collaboration. I know that others joining the network will see success because of this approach too.” Many communities have already received Trust support to create community youth networks or groups, while others may now receive support to establish them. These groups will then be able to receive help from the umbrella Basin Youth Network to deliver programs based on community priorities — plus have a mechanism to collaborate with each other. The Trust will lead the network by developing programs, hosting youth-focused events and hiring a regional coordinator. Collaborating is something Lori McNeill, executive director of the Cranbrook Boys and Girls Club, looks forward to. “Learning from other youth centres, talking about their ideas and trying them out, is so valuable to providing youth with diverse opportunities. I am also excited to team up with community partners in Cranbrook to build stronger programs that better serve the youth
community.” Shannon Isaac, youth coordinator at North Kootenay Lake Community Services Society thinks the network is a great idea. “Having a key point of contact in the community who can communicate with and bring local organizations together, incorporate input from the various groups and oversee youth programming has been key for Kaslo and Area D. It’s been incredibly collaborative, and the youth programming has been
enhanced because of this. We look forward to building on this as part of the network.” The network will also support emerging needs, such job readiness, work experience programming, youth leadership, and others as identified. To learn more about your community’s involvement in the network, contact Michelle d’Entremont 1-800-5058998 or mdentremont@ cbt.org. TRAIL – Joining hands in support of youth at-risk is proving to be a win-win for all. A new van was unveiled at the Kootenay Columbia Learning Centre (KCLC), much to the delight of 16 students currently enrolled in the Take a Hike (TAH) program as well as staff and local businesses that donated to the cause. The 15-passenger capacity allows the class to travel and encounter new challenges as a cohesive unit, outside the doors of the school. “Before, students had to rotate going on out-trips or volunteer days because there was not enough room in the van we currently use,” KCLC Principal Nathan Robinson explained. “This means they can all go on an out-trip at the same time.” Robinson was awed by the community banding together and raising money in support of at-risk youth. “It means so much to them to feel valued by the community,” he emphasized. “And we are so grate-
ful for the ongoing community support that ensures the sustainability of our program.” Three-years of fuel and the vehicle’s wrapping (signage) were also donated for the dedicated TAH bus.
It means so much to them to feel valued by the community,
“The value of this particular donation is over $15,000,” says Gordon Matchett, TAH foundation’s chief executive officer, noting the organization raises over $100,000 each year to support the program. Students share their gratitude for community support by writing thank-you letters, sharing their stories and volunteering time with many service groups and businesses. “As an example, last week our
students reciprocated the community’s generosity by painting the interior of a community member’s house,” Matchett shared. “The students are truly engaged in the cycle of generosity here in the Kootenays.” The program has been based in KCLC for three years, though students from the entire West Kootenay region are eligible to enroll. In that time, 40 students have successfully graduated. Take a Hike students are brave enough to face obstacles to learning that often include substance use, mental health challenges and past trauma, says Matchett. “One of the keys to success of the Take a Hike program is the support of the community,” he told the Trail Times. “Community members volunteer their time, provide opportunities for the students to volunteer, and provide the financial resources the program needs, ” Matchett said. “The program brings together community members to make sure no student is left behind.”

Quit smoking; one size doesn’t fit all There is simply no easy fix to going smokefree, says Suzanne Gaby, Manager of the BC Lung Association’s QuitNow program. “However, while there may be no magic bullet there is certainly a successful approach.” “People who made full use of the QuitNow program — including free, one-on-one counseling with a Quit Coach — have seen amazing results: 24 per cent success rate versus 4-7 per cent for those going it alone,” says Gaby.
The reason why the QuitNow approach is so successful, explains Gaby, is that it is personally tailored to each individual. At the heart of this approach are the program’s Quit Coaches — trained cessation counselors who help guide smokers through the planning and preparation process. Danielle Kochan, a Quit Coach with the program for five years, explains their motivational interviewing process. “Everybody has their own story of why they
smoke and what’s motivating them to quit. No two calls are ever the same, and what works for one person won’t necessarily work for the next.” Noting that on average it takes eight major attempts before anybody quits smoking, Danielle tells people not to be discouraged by setbacks along the way. “I like to teach people to think of slips and relapses as opportunities to learn what triggers their smoking. Once you understand what’s driving

you to smoke you can plan to be better prepared in the future.” Since 2011, QuitNow has helped more than 20,000 British Columbians with their quitting process. Quit Coaches are available to talk via phone (1-877455-2233) or live chat at QuitNow.ca, where people can also find a comprehensive planning tool, a community forum, and information about the BC Cessation Program, which offers free quitting aids such as the gum and patch.

Nelson church groups work together to host refugees NELSON — Three separate church groups in Nelson are all trying to bring refugees to town, but say they are working together. The Nelson Refugee Coalition, affiliated with the Nelson United Church, is supporting two women from East Africa who have been in town for several months. The group has brought several other refugee families to Nelson over the past 25 years, including from Guatemala, eastern Europe, Togo, Colombia, and Burma. The coalition’s Madelyn McKay said Nelson can easily
support three groups, because as soon as a refugee family arrives, it takes all of the group’s energy to find housing, furniture and clothing, as well as to arrange English lessons. Also hoping to host refugees are the Nelson Friends of Refugees, affiliated with the Anglican Church, and the Cathedral Refugee Committee, affliated with the Catholic Church. Bill Moore of the Friends of Refugees agreed Nelson can easily support all three groups. “Each has access to a different network of people, and at the

he said. Moore said public response has been “very strong” and fundraising has been easy. The group started in response to the Syrian refugee crisis and has secured a rental house with room for a family of six. Barry Nelson of the Cathedral Refugee Committee said his group has secured a one-month home-stay for a family and is looking for more permanent accomodation. “We were overwhelmed by the support, not just from the church community but so many people outside it,” he said.

Blizzard of good music blows through Rossland A storm of fiercly rockin’ musicians passed through Rossland over the weekend for Blizzard Fest, in conjunction with Rossland Winter Carnival. The festival kicked off on Thursday night, and the first group to perform was the Devin Cuddy Band. The band last came through the region on the Holiday Train, making stops in Nelson and Castlegar, but this was the first time the band perfomed in Rossland. The band had no time to take in the carnival, as they were passing through on a Canadian tour, and had a show to play in Vancouver on Saturday. Cuddy hopes the band will be able to come back sometime. The following night,

Annual literary competition celebrates local writing The annual Kootenay Literary Competition (KLC) launched Feb. 1 with WAYLAY as the theme for this year’s writing. Submissions are now open for adult entrants. Since its beginning, as a small competition for Nelson writers, the com-
petition has expanded to cover the entire Kootenay region. KLC aims to support local artists and literacy in the Kootenays. Writers may interpret the theme of WAYLAY in any way they like, and approach it through any of the genre categories. The
theme is to be integrated into the creative work at the writer’s discretion. Detailed rules are available on the KLC website www.kootenayliterarycomp.com. There are three writing categories for adults: fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry. Cash prizes are
awarded for the first and second place entries in each category. Submissions will be judged by a panel of writing professionals, who will provide feedback and suggestions on the winning work. Winners of the KLC win substantial cash prizes and gain recognition at a
gala event. The deadline for submission for this year’s competition is Friday, April 29, 2016. Questions about the competition can be emailed through the website www. kootenayliterarycomp. com.

Music, stories and mountain culture Experiments in Entertainment (E2) Presents The Wardens Friday, Feb 19 at 7:30 p.m. These cowboys, mountain climbers and wildlife wranglers are truly jack-of-all trades, performing songs and stories in the intimate setting of the Muriel Griffiths Room at The Bailey Theatre. With musical talent on a par with their ranger skills, The Wardens — Scott Ward, Bradley Bischoff and Ray Schmidt — are a Banff National Park-based trio whose stories rise from the very land they’ve protected for the past 30 years. Born in the remote wilderness, their music immediately connects with anyone who has a love of landscape. Saddle up for horseback patrols in remote valleys, get dangerously close to grizzly bears and pay homage to those who gave their lives to wilderness conservation. Audiences laugh and cry as they become engaged with the stories of the places that belong to them. Through superb musicianship (lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass), haunting three-part vocal harmonies, rich on-screen images and a chilling delivery, The Wardens bring the majesty of our landscape to audiences from around the world. “These songs reflect the wild country they patrol… a real gem. Four stars out of four.” — Maverick, UK country music magazine.
Tickets are $18 in advance and $22 at the door and available at The Charles Bailey theatre box office. Open Mon-Fri 12-4 at 1501 Cedar Avenue in Trail or by phone at 250-368-9669. Visit www.trail-arts.com for more information. Also coming up at the Charles Bailey An evening dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling In the long, dark hours of winter, let’s get together and share some stories. Hosted by Almeda Glenn Miller, storytellers from across the valley and surrounding mountains will make their snowy pilgrimage to the warmth and intimacy of the Muriel Griffiths room at the Charles Bailey Theatre. Be prepared to be frightened, enlightened, and delighted with authentic stories from our region. Stories are true and short with Love as the theme in celebration of Valentine’s Day. Tickets $10, 19+ only please. Still accepting storytellers, if interested please email charlesbaileytheatre@trail-arts.com or phone 250-364-3003. Stories must be true and maximum 4 minutes long. Available at the box office — Monday to Friday, 12-4 p.m. Buy by phone: 250-368-9669. Also available at the door
