Gladys homeless served notice to move Protest campers told to pack up by next Wednesday Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News

Residents of the Gladys Avenue homeless protest camp have been told to remove their possessions from the site by next Wednesday, Feb. 10. Notices were posted at the site Tuesday morning, the day after

council officially adopted a new parks bylaw. That allows overnight camping in all but three of the city’s parks, but requires campers to take down tents during the day. It also designated Gladys Avenue and the land on which the camp sits as a “highway,” meaning camping is prohibited on the right-of-way. Notices were also posted at the

ters. He suggested that removing the camp from the Gladys Avenue site will be a gradual process. “We’re not going to sit there with our watches,” Braun said. “Having said that, we can’t just allow it to continue forever.” Braun said the temporary winter shelter on Riverside Road had one

smaller Cyril Street encampment across the road. That land is technically designated as a park, and the notices lay out the requirement for campers to take down tents during the day. Mayor Henry Braun said the city is working with service providers to find housing for those camp residents who wish to move into shel-

Between 20 and 25 refugee families from Syria are expected to arrive in Abbotsford by the end of the month. The refugees will be sponsored by the federal government, and there is “tremendous energy from locals laying the groundwork for their arrival, according to Manpreet Grewal, Abbotsford Community Services’ director of multicultural and immigrant integration services. The refugees – whose number could exceed 100 – are set to arrive here on Feb. 22 and will be housed in the shortterm in a local hotel while homes in the city are found. While organizers don’t yet have specific information about many of those who will be arriving, they will all be Syrians currently housed in camps in Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon. Only a few are expected to speak English, and most will be children under the age of 17. “This will become their community, said Grewal. A variety of agencies have spent the last several months preparing to welcome the refugees, but she said much remains to be done – including finding

This will become their community. Manpreet Grewal permanent housing – and the community’s help will be needed to help the families integrate into Abbotsford, she said. Preparation began several months ago, with service workers first consulting with clients from the Middle East about the services and assistance the families might need once they arrive. That was followed by a meeting with stakeholders, which saw, among other services offered, doctors step up to provide help. And in late January, the organization held a community forum, where many stepped forward to offer assistance. “We got a lot of help from people saying ‘I want to volunteer,’ she said. “There’s a lot of goodwill in this community. It’s just a matter of how we channel that energy. Upon arrival, the refugees will be greeted by teams that will work on finding housing and helping the refugees feel at

home in Abbotsford. Grewal says finding housing will be the biggest challenge, and the group is hoping apartment building owners come forward with available accommodations. Anyone who can provide housing is asked to call 778-809-4411, while those interested in volunteering can call 604217-3055. While Abbotsford Community Services is leading the local effort, the arrival of the refugees in British Columbia is being co-ordinated by the Immigrant Services Society of B.C. In January, the organization had to pause ongoing arrival of refugees because of a lack of housing in the Vancouver area. The refugees won’t be the first to arrive in Abbotsford from Syria, though. Last Friday, a family sponsored through the blended visa-office referral initiative (BVOR) by the Interfaith Refugee Project arrived in the city. Other groups are also raising money to sponsor families through the BVOR, which provides for some government funding. One such group from Bakerview Church is holding a concert this Saturday (see story on A15).

bed available on Monday and more may soon be opening up. But he said there is so much demand for case planning of people seeking housing that the part-time worker tasked with that job is overworked. He said he planned to talk to the province, which funds the position, to see if it could be expanded to ease what he described as a “bottleneck. Braun said he wasn’t sure how many people actually live at the Gladys camp, noting that it seemed empty when officers visited Tuesday morning. From his own discussions with occupants, he said at least some of the residents do not want to live in housing. “Some of them have compelling stories that I understand, he said. But Braun said the Gladys camp is unsafe and dirty and will eventually have to come down. There have been calls for a “dignity village, where homeless people would be allowed to set up camp on a more permanent basis. Braun, though, said the state of the Gladys camp doesn’t make him optimistic that such a site elsewhere would remain safe and inhabitable. “If a dignity village is going to end up looking like Gladys, that’s not a solution. Those who wish to tent can camp in

other parks, he said, as long as they comply with the restrictions set forth in the bylaw that prohibit tenting on sports fields, playgrounds and other amenities. Camping is also forbidden in Mill Lake and Exhibition parks, along with the Civic Plaza around city hall. “We’re going to do this respectfully, he said. “We’re not going to go in there chasing people around. Wednesday morning, at least a few peo-

ple were at the camp. The News spoke to one man who said he was staying at the site temporarily. Another man who was a permanent resident said he wasn’t sure where he’d go after the camp was removed. Setting up and removing a tent each night in a park “is not as easy as they make it sound, especially for those who are “drug-sick or suffering from other ailments, he said.

Abbotsford Police have arrested a man they allege was posing online as a 19-year-old and targeting 15-year-old girls for sex. Jeremy Michael Roth, 23, was arrested on Monday and has been charged with child luring. Const. Paul Walker said the investigation was launched after police received a tip in December that a man from Abbotsford was participating in such activity. A detective from the Abbotsford Police Department’s (APD) major crime unit then posed online as a 15-year-old girl and communicated with the man, who requested they meet for sex. The investigation took several weeks, and Roth was arrested ROTH on Monday at the alleged pre-arranged meeting spot in a local park. He has no prior criminal record. Walker said no actual victims have come forward or been identified, but police are asking to speak with anyone who might have information as the major crime unit continues its investigation. Walker said the incident serves as a reminder for parents to be aware of their children’s online activities. Anyone with information is asked to call the APD at 604-859-5225 or text abbypd (222973).

Shanga Rahim Karim is happy and grateful for a new start in Abbotsford

Abbotsford News

W

hen Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in November the federal government’s intentions to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees in Canada by the end of February, critics were quick to denounce the plan. Some expressed concerns that despite the government’s assurances that security checks would be thorough, terrorists would get past the screening and lives would be at risk. Others were critical of spending taxpayers’ dollars on foreigners, saying such funds would be better spent on helping Canadians in need. Still others said an influx of refugees would put a strain on the nation’s healthcare system and social services, and take jobs away from Canadians. But one refugee who has settled in Abbotsford wants to dispel those notions and present what she says is a more valid representation of the contributions that foreigners can make to their new home. Shanga Rahim Karim, a journalist who originates from the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq, said that she and the refugees she has met are eager to give back to their communities because they are so appreciative of the opportunities they have been given. Most have come from traumatic situations and are grateful to find peace and freedom in their new home. Shanga has a suggestion for anyone hesitant to welcome refugees into their community. “I just say talk with them and you can, after that, decide.” Shanga and her husband Bakr, an accountant, moved to Canada last June. They were given refugee status based on death threats Shanga had received because of her work championing women’s rights issue in her homeland. Shanga was born and raised in the city of Sulaimani, a more progressive region than many areas of Iraq. She grew up in a home with her parents, 10 sisters and one brother.

“My family, I can say, is different and they encouraged me to trust myself and do what I want and be independent.” Shanga attended university and in 2006 began working as a journalist. Although most newspapers in Iraq are run by the government, she wanted to be able to speak and write freely, and chose an independent publication. She reported on women’s rights issues, such as genital mutilation and honour killing, helping bring to the forefront topics that were not openly talked about. Shanga was also critical of the government, saying it wasn’t doing enough to help women who were the victims of human-rights abuses. Her writing eventually led her to work with several organizations, as well as eventually becoming the editor-in-chief of a women’s rights newspaper.

I like my life … I didn’t want to die. One of the organizations with which she was involved, WOLA, provided funds for women who didn’t have the money to hire a lawyer. The types of cases they took on included women going through divorce due to an abusive husband. Many of these women had no resources of their own. They had no education or job, and the money was controlled by their husbands. “Some of them don’t know they have rights. They think men have all the rights,” Shanga said. She also worked with an organization, WADI, that opposed genital mutilation – a common occurrence among women in some Muslim countries – and informed women of their rights. Shanga also worked with a group that sought justice for the victims of honour killings. Among their cases was a woman who was raped and impregnated by her brother, and then killed by another broth-

er because of the supposed shame she brought to the family. In another incident, a father killed his daughter because she chose to marry the man with whom she had fallen in love, instead of the man her family had selected for her. Yet another case resulted in death threats to Shanga and others involved in the organization from family members of a man who was sent to prison for 20 years for killing his daughter. Through it all, Shanga continued to write about these situations and about women’s rights in general, with a greater purpose in mind. “When you improve women, then you can say, ‘My country is good,’ ” she said. This work resulted in Shanga receiving anonymous threats that she stop writing about these issues or she would be killed. She and her husband, who she said fully supports her work, decided it would be best if they left the country. “I like my life … I didn’t want to die. I want to work for all the women in the world.” She said it was difficult to leave behind her homeland and family and to adjust to a new culture, but she has embraced her new home and describes the people she has met as “very, very lovely.” She and Bakr are living with a local couple who run a home for refugees, and last month they both obtained work at Phantom Screens in Abbotsford. When they are not working, they attend English classes at Abbotsford Community Services and volunteer with Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore. Both want to go back to school. Bakr hopes to become an engineer, and Shanga would like to return to journalism and to her work with women’s rights issues around the world, as well as volunteering to help refugees settle in Canada. They are optimistic. “We want to improve our lives in Canada, and have a good life for ourselves,” Shanga said. “We have met a lot of Canadian people now. “They love us. We love them.”

Urban drug ghettos aren’t working Tom

Fletcher

B.C. Views Communities around B.C. are struggling to cope with the continued influx of what politicians call “homelessness,” a term that suggests the problem can be solved merely by providing more homes. Taxpaying citizens see the daily reality behind the soothing euphemisms – mainly transients squatting in parks and “tent cities” blighted by drug abuse and crime, and “homeless” shelters that fill up as soon as they open. They worry that the continued costly supply of supports only invites more arrivals, particularly in the gentle climate of southwestern B.C. Their worries are well founded. In Abbotsford, a 40-bed “temporary weather shelter” made from industrial camp trailers opened in December with a $450,000 operating grant from B.C. Housing.

It was full in 10 days. Abbotsford Police Chief Bob Rich told city council in January that his bike officers don’t recognize most of the shelter occupants from their constant patrols of local tent camps, the largest of which has been on a city-owned roadside site since 2013. In Maple Ridge, a “low barrier harm reduction” shelter was opened last fall in response to a growing tent camp and accompanying drug dealing, prostitution and petty crime. One resident noted bitterly that a mayor’s task force had identified 42 unsheltered homeless people, then found places for 77 from the camp, 40 from a closing “temporary” shelter and 40 in a new shelter. “How exactly does one house 157 out of 42?” she asked. Victoria’s camping population has gathered in an Occupy-style squat on provincial land next to the courthouse, after years of uncontrolled camping in Beacon Hill and other city parks. The city opened a shelter in a vacant Boys and Girls Club gym, complete with new indoor tents. By the time that was full, the courthouse camp was bigger than ever, with some occupants describing how they came to

town for the opportunity. One said Vancouver Police gave her a bus ticket to Victoria. The latest plan by a local agency that runs Victoria shelters is to convert an old, empty seniors’ care home into a 101-bed permanent housing facility. The city has come up with around $1 million for this project, in a residential area next

This would presumably come from B.C. taxpayers via our social housing czar, deputy premier Rich Coleman. Coleman pioneered this “housing first” experiment in 2007, buying up 13 century-old “single-room occupancy” hotels in Vancouver’s notorious Downtown Eastside. These crumbling bedbug habitats were

bought and renovated for a staggering $143 million, plus a 15-year maintenance commitment and a cop assigned to each one in an effort to contain the chaos inside. Coleman brags endlessly about the great job he has done, but how is that actually working? A new study by Simon Fraser University researchers provides a more objective assessment. Tracking 433 mentally ill homeless adults over 10 years, the study found the concentration of low-rent accommodation, food handouts, street outreach and medical supports resulted in “significant personal decline rather than recovery, as evidenced by their involvement in the criminal justice system, large increases in acute care and prolonged homelessness.” The rate of people arriving in this service-intensive hellhole has tripled in the last 10 years, a finding similar to studies of concentrated services in New York, Sao Paulo and Osaka. It’s a cautionary tale for other urban communities where this failed containment model is proposed. tfletcher@blackpress.ca 34375 Gladys Ave., Abbotsford, B.C. V2S 2H5

The first opening, on Wednesday, showcased the Mt. Lehman Firehall No. 5, with the opening of Matsqui’s Firehall No. 4 scheduled for next Wednesday at 6 p.m. The previous Mt. Lehman hall was 50 years old and previously scheduled for replacement in 2001, while the Matsqui hall was 52 years old and scheduled for replacement in 2002. Neither halls were large enough to accommodate modern emergency vehicles comfortably. The grand opening of Firehall No. 4 in Matsqui, on Wallace Street, starts at 6 p.m. on Feb. 10.

From prime flight school to prime farmland Mark

Rushton Faces, Places and Traces Regular readers may recall that in December I wrote about the history of Abbotsford Airport and its genesis as an active air force training centre from its construction in 1943 through to the end of WWII in 1945. There is, however, an addendum to that story. There was a second air force airport in our community, long gone now, but in its day in the mid-1940s it was as active as the main field we now know as YXX. That main field was used as a bomber training centre, with large four-engined Liberators occupying the large triangular runways. The second airport, known then as 24 EFTS (Elementary Flight Training School), was the domain of the single-engine twoseat Fairchild Cornell. In those, pilots learned to fly, presumably to later transition to the Liberators and perhaps other aircraft in the RCAF. Abbotsford, by the way, was a coveted location by pilots for its mild weather and dramatic scenery. This, however, is not so much a story about the aircraft and pilot training as it is about the location of 24 EFTS and its unique history tied to Sumas Prairie.

I recall seeing private aircraft, and possibly crop dusters, flying in and out of the airstrip in the late 1960s and 1970s when the land it sat on was owned by Buckerfields Farms. By then, the pavement that gave smooth take-offs and landings for the Cornells was gone, removed when the RCAF decommissioned the site in 1945. But while I remember seeing planes on the prairie, it was a friend of one of my sons who, last July, reminded me of the airfield’s existence. Lorence Peters said he recalled as a child his father taking him to the strip to watch model airplanes being flown there on Sunday afternoons. He even sent me a Google Earth link that showed long ditches or lines running from northeast to southwest across Sumas Prairie farmland from east of Marion Road down to Campbell. Those no longer exist. Current landowner Peter Reus spent considerable time and dollars reclaiming the farmland, digging up lengthy cedar drain tiles as well as removing truckloads of gravel drain rock that was above those tiles installed to create 24 EFTS in 1943. Interestingly, the airfield almost became a golf course in 1989 when friend Peter Linley and others purchased the Buckerfields farmland under the corporate name of Sumas Estates, and proposed a 150-acre course on the parcel now owned by Reus. The course proposal was, fortunately for the land’s ability to grow crops, stillborn. However, delving into how 24 EFTS came into being, I reached out to histo-

Michael comes by his interest in history honestly – he was raised in Trethewey House, his grandfather having purchased it and its surrounding lands on Mill Lake in 1935. Its ownership remained in the family until 1978, when it was bought by the Trethewey family and donated to the community as a museum and heritage home. Aside from providing me with a vast amount of information that is far too lengthy to include here, Michael shared with me the only known photograph, taken

Public reminded of drone rules Much of Abbotsford lies in no-fly zone due to airport The Abbotsford International Airport (YXX) and the City of Abbotsford is reminding drone users to be aware of no-fly zones and rules that limit where the devices can be flown. In addition to a suite of other rules governing drones, a no-fly zone restricts their use within nine kilometres of any airport, including YXX. Stretching east all the way to Sumas Mountain, the no-fly zone includes the vast majority of the city’s urban area. Transport Canada regulates drones, formally called “unmanned aerial vehicles” (UAVs). Before

flying such a device, users must understand the rules that apply, the city said in a press release issued Wednesday. There are also weight restrictions on UAVs, and a Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC) is required for all commercial use operations but is not required for recreational use of drones weighing less than 35 kg. For more information on flying drones safely and legally, visit the Transport Canada website at tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/standards/standards-4179.html

by Bud Nugent sometime between October 1943 and July 1944, of 24 EFTS as an active pilot training centre. Of course, I have to note here that had the Sumas Prairie flight centre been contemplated a mere 20 years prior, the air force would have needed flying boats since the vast Sumas Lake wasn’t fully drained until about 1924. Not only that, but the biting hordes of mosquitoes would have made life intolerable for any flight trainees. Now some 70 years later, the land that was beneath the lake, and on which was located 24 EFTS, is some of the best crop and farmland in Canada, if not the world.

Concert a fundraiser for Syrian refugees A concert to raise money in support of Syrian refugees takes place at Bakerview Church (2285 Clearbrook Rd.) on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. The concert features three pieces by composer Franz Schubert. Juno-nominated Daniel Lichti from Wilfried Laurier University will sing the song cycle Wintereisse, accompanied by Toronto pianist Sandra Mogensen. Lichti has recorded Wintereisse for Analekta Records and has performed around the world, es-

tablishing himself as one of Canada’s finest bass-baritones. Lichti has achieved renown at major Bach and summer festivals. The concert will also

feature Calvin Dyck performing one of Schubert’s Sonatina in G Minor published after his death, and Trinity Western University vocal facul-

ty Alison Nystrom performing Shepherd on the Rock with clarinetist Christopher Lee. Bakerview Church is hoping to raise at least $27,000 to sponsor a

Syrian family of four through the blended visa office referred program. This is a cost-sharing program with the Canadian government.

They are working with Mennonite Central Committee, and the process is expected to take three to five months. The church, which

has formed a committee to prepare to receive the family, is also collecting good used furniture and other household items for the family.

The Abbotsford Downtown Business Association is committed to providing our community with an abundance of not only wonderful local businesses, but vibrancy in the heart of the city. A bit of joie de vivre has found its way to the downtown with fresh vitality in old events and fabulous new events which embrace the Arts and Culture of Abbotsford. The Wine & Art Walk has the community buzzing with excitement and anticipation for the next one! We are excited to announce that our members will be hosting two Wine & Art Walks again this year. The Spring Wine & Art Walk – May 12th (great Mother’s Day gift); Fall Wine & Art Walk - September 8th. What better way to enjoy an inexpensive evening of fun, friends and local art, all the while discovering the many businesses that are in your downtown. Stay tuned on our Facebook page for updates on ticket sales. www.facebook.com/DowntownAbbotsford As you may have already seen on social media, we are close to breaking ground at the Jubilee Arts Centre. JAC will be located at 33660 South Fraser Way at the historic MSA Centennial Library. You will

see construction safety fencing up within the next couple weeks and a ground breaking shortly after. The Abbotsford Downtown Business Association (ADBA) and the Abbotsford Arts Council (AAC), are very excited to be joining together for this Arts and Heritage Project in Historic Downtown Abbotsford. The ADBA has entered into a long term lease agreement with the City of Abbotsford for the Centennial Library Building and is partnering with the AAC to create a much needed Arts Centre in Historic Downtown Abbotsford. The building will be home a magnificent art gallery, featuring local artists, as well as a large Board Room, a kitchen, four wheelchair accessible washrooms and a large multi-purpose room; perfect for community meetings, performances and classes. A vital part of the rejuvenation of this Centennial Building will be changes that assure the entire facility is disability friendly. Currently the building has no accessibility features. Our goal is to create an inclusive community facility, allowing those in

our community with mobility issues to be included, without barriers in the Arts, Heritage and Community events that will take place in the building and also in the park surrounding it. Key to making this project work, and what we really feel makes it unique, is how the community is working together to make it a reality. The Centennial Building sits, in Jubilee Park and we recognize that with the vibrancy of the Arts Culture, will come a fresh new feel for the park. We foresee this area, as we have fondly nicknamed “The Jubilee Arts Centre”, as a future vibrant, family oriented, arts and heritage hub of our wonderful city. The Centennial Building will become a wellrecognized art hub of Abbotsford; the Arts community and ADBA membership are excited about this project and we are excited to be bringing it to the people of Abbotsford. Follow the project on our new Facebook page dedicated solely to the project. www.facebook. com/JubileeArtsCentre

Submissions are now being accepted for CIVL-FM’s first-ever Fraser Valley Music Awards (FVMA). Artists of all genres and ages are encouraged to submit their music to the FVMA jury by completing the submission form at civl.ca/fvma by March 31. Winners will be announced at the inaugural FVMA gala in July. Winners – and in some cases, nominees – will receive a variety of free products and services, including recording studio time, media coverage, placement in summer music festivals, consultations with music industry experts and live show recordings. Events leading up to the main event include a Battle of the Bands and music industry education workshops, in addition to the launch of a compilation album of Fraser Valley music. “In addition to superstars like Hedley or Carly Rae and various Juno and Polaris Prize nominees, a host of incredibly well-regarded Canadian musicians hail from the Valley,” said CIVL station manager Aaron Levy. “We want to both celebrate their work and help build the next generation of success stories by providing them with the tools to reach beyond the Valley.” In the past two years, CIVL Radio has organized similar events, including a Battle of the Bands whose winners have gone on to the Peak Performance Project (Derrival) and the Fox Seeds competition (John Welsh). Western Jaguar won the 2015 battle. The opportunity to produce this event arose due to a $50,000 grant that CIVL Radio landed from the Community Radio Fund of Canada. For more information, including submissions, sponsoring, volunteering or becoming an official juror, email fvma@civl.ca.

A one-year commitment to the program is requested. For further information and registration please call:

The UFV Cascades men’s and women’s volleyball teams swept away the College of the Rockies Avalanche on Saturday and Sunday. Coming off a bye week, the women showed some rust, but finished strong to beat the Avalanche in four sets (25-21, 19-25, 25-17, 2520) on Saturday. “We try to base all of our games on our standard, and I felt like we were below our standard in our passing and serving,” said women’s head coach Mike Gilray. “We had to have different people step up and play well tonight, and Kara Williams stepped up and took that on. She had a great blocking game, slowing down their outsides, and offensively she hit at a high standard.” The women followed that up with another four-set win on Sunday, beating the Avalanche (25-18, 23-25, 27-25, 25-22). “I think we were much happier with the quality of volleyball today,” Gilray said. “It was a tough battle, and it was great to see the girls commit to small details, stay consistent, and be able to pull the win out.” The pair of wins bring the women to .500, and they now have a record of nine wins and nine losses. They sit tied for third in the Pacwest. The men followed suit, with a three-set win (27-25, 25-22, 28-26) on Saturday, and a fourset triumph on Sunday (22-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-21). The men improved to a record of 12 wins and eight losses, and they are in sole possession of third place in the Pacwest. Both teams return to action this weekend, with games against the Capilano Blues in North Vancouver on Friday and Saturday.

It could be a long time before Abbotsford witnesses an athlete like Chase Claypool again. He did it all on the gridiron – from gravity-defying catches to 50-yard touchdown throws, 80-yard kick returns, punishing quarterback sacks, and jaw-dropping interceptions. He’s also a pretty good basketball player, scoring 51 points earlier this week for the Panthers. But it was Claypool’s football skills that drew media, fans, friends, and family to Abbotsford Senior Secondary on Wednesday. Claypool officially signed on the dotted line with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and is set to take his talents to South Bend, Indiana. It’s a far cry from his humble roots playing community football with the Abbotsford Falcons under the

letic potential, drew interest from all across the United States. A total of 14 NCAA Division 1 teams contacted him last year, including powerhouses like Oregon University, the University of Michigan and Mississippi State. But, it was the lure of the tradition, his-

tory and education at Notre Dame that made Claypool verbally commit to Notre Dame last year. He stepped up his game even more in his Grade 12 year, hoisting the Panthers on his back to lead them to their first provincial title game since 1984. He was also named the top AA football player in the province for 2015. Back in Grade 10, Claypool said his goal was just to get the chance to play football at university. After Wednesday’s announcement, he’s set to suit up for one of the most storied franchises in college football. Claypool said it felt right the moment he visited the Notre Dame campus. “As soon as I was there, I knew I wanted to be there,” he said. “Just walking through the halls and feeling the tradition was amazing. The coaches and players made me feel like family.”

He said the staff at Notre Dame has big expectations for him this season. “They said I have big upside and a lot of potential as an early

player,” he said. “They believe I can play pretty early, if not my first year. They want to work with me on the change of speed because it’s a lot faster,

and a different style of play. If I can get used to that, I could be looking at playing pretty soon, but I’m not going to Continued on A24

Irish kick off in September From A23

get my hopes up too high for anything. I expect to play in my second year, but if it happens in my first I’ll be really happy.” The Fighting Irish staff called Claypool early on Wednesday morning to welcome him to the program, and had high praise for him in a video they released later that day. “He’s an absolute physical specimen,” said Notre Dame offensive co-ordinator Mike Sanford. “When he walks in the building you can tell he’s different.” “He’s just the best football player on the field in every situation that he’s put into, and his team used him in a number of

different ways,” said assistant coach Mike Denbrock. “He’s a guy that’s going to bring an incredible amount of attitude to our football team from the standpoint of being competitive and being the best at what he does. You see a guy who could do about anything anyone would need to do to help a team on the football field be successful.” “When it’s all said and done, I think he’ll probably be one of the best players to ever come out of Canada,” Sanford added. Claypool heads to training camp with the club after writing his provincial final exams in June. Notre Dame kicks off the 2016 schedule against the Texas Longhorns on Sept. 3.

Abby athletes join Cascades A pair of Abbotsford Senior Secondary students are set to hit the pitch with the Cascades men’s soccer team next fall. Grade 12 students David Parfett and Jesse March signed with the UFV men’s program on Monday. The pair currently play for Surrey United’s U18 side in the EA Sports BC Soccer Premier League. Parfett’s youth soccer resume includes playing for the B.C. provincial team at the U14 and U15 levels. “David’s a very technical midfielder,” said Cascades head coach Tom Lowndes said. “He’s a left-footer with very good passing ability, and likes to get box-to-box. He likes to start the play and keep things ticking for his team. I think his work rate and his ability will help him make the step up. I’m excited to see him on the team next year.” “I chose UFV because it’s close to home and it will give me the best opportunity to grow as a player,” said Parfett, who plans to study kinesiolo-

gy at UFV. “I’d like to make a positive impact on the team and become a better player.” March, a former B.C. provincial team keeper, will join his Abby Senior classmate Parfett in the kinesiology program at UFV. “Jesse’s a big, strong, tall goalkeeper,” Lowndes said. “He’s a very good shot-stopper and a very good distributor. I’ve watched him for a couple years now, and he’s matured into a really solid goalkeeper. I’m excited for him to come in and push our other goalkeepers for a starting position.” “I chose UFV because I am very interested in the kinesiology program, and it’s close to home,” March said. “My goal and dream would be to use my time with the Cascades as a stepping stone to a professional soccer career, and to earn my degree in kinesiology.” Also signing with the team was Parfett and March’s teammate from Surrey United, Johnston Heights Secondary student Ryan Donald.

Huskies Grade 8 boys basketball riding strong start Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News

For the first time this season, the Abbotsford Middle School Huskies suffered a defeat, but the setback hasn’t dampened the team’s promise. The Huskies hosted the highly ranked Holy Cross Crusaders from Surrey in an exhibition game on Feb. 1,

falling 58-45. It marks the end to an undefeated run that lasted over three months. The club rolled off 26 straight wins to start the season, including tournament victories in Kamloops, White Rock, Pitt Meadows and the Abbotsford PD city event. Huskies head coach Shawn Mani said it’s been a great ride so

far. “Once in a while you get a special group of kids that just love the game and being in the gym and this is that team, he said. He pointed out that all 12 players on the Huskies roster played on the school’s title-winning football team in the fall. “We’re building off the success of our

football team, he said. “We won the football championship on a Monday, and all these guys were here for basketball practice on a Tuesday - it’s good to see. In addition to all the football players, Mani said several of his players play other sports. “We have guys who also play lacrosse,

hockey and even a nationally ranked baseball player, he said. “Playing multiple sports gives them a competitive mentality, and they understand the importance of being a good teammate. He said his key players include: Kevin Endozo, Anish Dhaliwal, Harsh Gill and Carlin Dick. The

team plays mostly Fraser Valley and Surrey teams for the rest of the year before advancing to regionals and then possibly provincials. “Our job is to develop these players and encourage them to continue playing basketball, he said. “We want to see these players playing at the Snowball Classic

and provincials for Abbotsford Senior. These kids are leaders on the court, and the classroom, and it’s nice to see us develop such good kids. Next up for the Huskies is the Walnut Grove tournament in Langley on Friday and Saturday. The league playoffs begin starting Feb. 10.

The driverless car then takes off on its own, autonomously self-steering through the building, seeking an empty stall to park, shutdown and lock itself. Robo Bimmer can also be started remotely and summoned to pick up its driver at the same entry/exit location. Every major auto maker is stepping up work on autonomous vehicle technology. Toyota, GM and Mercedes-Benz are all heavily invested in autonomous vehicle development and expected to bring products to market. Ford recently announced that it’s tripling the size of its autonomous vehicle development fleet and accelerating on-road testing, which starts in California later this year. Its demo vehicle is a Fusion Hybrid sedan with puck-power, a new Solid-State Hybrid-Ultra Puck Auto sensor. About the same size and shape as a hockey puck, this puck can map and create real-time 3D models of its surrounding environment. Autonomous vehicle development also transcends traditional auto production sources. Google, the internet search engine and browser behemoth, surprised everybody back in 2010, when its autonomous vehicle development work was revealed. It’s now working with a number of traditional automakers and is expected to have a fully autonomous vehicle ready for market by 2020. Other Silicon Valley giants getting on autonomous vehicle action include Tesla and Uber. Yes, of course, they’re working on a Robo-Taxi. Not sure
